Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"Something is rotten in the state," says Marcellus in "Hamlet."

Well, it certainly is in the state of Illinois.

Yet, on hearing U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald describe a plot by his governor to sell his Senate seat -- "conduct (that) would make Lincoln roll over in his grave" -- how did reform President Barack Obama respond?

"I had no contact with the governor or his office, and so I was not aware of what was happening. ... And as I said, it is a sad day for Illinois. Beyond that, I don't think it's appropriate to comment."

"A sad day for Illinois" -- that was it.

But FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Grant could not contain his revulsion: "If (Illinois) isn't the most corrupt state in the United States, it's certainly one hell of a competitor. I think even the most cynical agents in our office were shocked."

Yet Barack stayed cool. Not for 24 hours did he join the clamor for Gov. Rod Blagojevich to stand down.

The stink of this is not going away, and it may adhere to the new presidency that seemed about to begin in a new era of good feeling.

For, consider. While Obama said he had never spoken with the governor about the Senate seat -- understandable, given how toxic the scandal-plagued Blagojevich was -- he did not say his staff had not done so.

Which raises several questions:

Did Obama direct or ask any staffer to speak to Blagojevich? Did Rahm Emanuel or David Axelrod, both of Chicago, never speak to the governor about the Senate appointment? Did Barack's aides all treat Blagojevich as a political leper and not communicate to him any interest in or concern about whom he might appoint to succeed Obama?

This defies credulity.

On the other hand, if Obama's staffers did talk to Blagojevich or his staff, did the governor or his men suggest a big-time pay-off might purchase a Senate seat?

For Blagojevich is overheard on the wiretaps complaining that all that Obama, whom he slurs nastily, was offering was gratitude.

How did Blagojevich know that?

Who told him Barack would not pony up and play ball? And if any Obama aide was solicited for a bribe, did they relate that to Obama? Did they report it to the FBI or the U.S. attorney's office?

Forty-eight hours into Senategate and already the cancer has metastasized. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has been dragged in. He is "Senate Candidate 5" on the wiretaps. From the FBI transcripts, it appears a Jackson "emissary," with access to the governor, offered to raise half a million for Blagojevich's re-election, in return for naming Jackson to the Senate. With perhaps a million more to follow.

Jackson says he met for 90 minutes with the governor Monday and made his case for the Senate appointment -- on his record alone. Jackson emphasized that he was not solicited by the governor for a bribe, nor was any emissary ever authorized to offer the governor anything.

Jackson's lawyer backs him up, but says that some supporter, without Jackson's knowledge, might have freelanced on his own.

There are other puzzling questions.

Why, if Fitzgerald was listening to the wiretaps and laying his trap for the governor and corrupt politicians interested in buying a U.S. Senate seat, did he abort the operation with his 6 a.m. arrests of Blagojevich and his chief of staff? Why spring the trap when the mouse is just outside, mulling over whether to go for the cheese?

Why not let the plot unfold? Why not let the corrupt bidder for a Senate seat make a solid offer and bring in his or her down payment? Why not wait for the felony to be committed instead of acting while it was still being considered and discussed?

This one is not going away soon.

Forty-eight hours into the scandal, we have a governor and chief of staff arrested in their homes for attempting to sell the U.S. Senate seat of the 44th president of the United States. And one of the most famous names in politics, Jesse Jackson Jr., has hired a lawyer and been placed under a cloud of suspicion that some benefactor tried to buy him the Senate seat he coveted.

No one is yet convicted of anything. But if this scandal touches any member of Obama's White House staff, who may have spoken with Blagojevich and listened to his solicitation of a bribe without reporting it, we are going to have a new special prosecutor in Washington, D.C.

Indeed, the U.S. Senate should probably make the confirmation of Eric Holder as attorney general, the Clintonite who midwifed the pardons of Marc Rich and the Puerto Rican terrorists, contingent on his naming an independent counsel in the Senategate scandal.

As for the Bush-to-Barack transition, which Americans have applauded as graceful and uplifting, it is now mired in mud.

Yes, indeed, it is -- a sad day for America.

Nailed Him
"For Blagojevich is overheard on the wiretaps complaining that all that Obama, whom he slurs nastily, was offering was gratitude.

How did Blagojevich know that?"

And what exactly did he mean by gratitude? Did Obama offer his Ebay vendors license for Blagojevich to use? Has anyone checked his paypal account? How can Obama be so unspoiled and optimistic living in Chicago? Was that Hawaii or Hanoi on his birth certificate? To these questions and more we'll have to rely upon Fitzgerald; power abuser and spy chaser.

Sad day?
More like 'business-as-usual' when the Democrats are in power.

Obamessiah
walks upon the cesspool and the cesspool smells like a rose.

Crap
The more you stir crap the more it stinks. Wonder what the telephone records will reveal.

so far, there is nothing here.
Just alot of hopeful speculation on the part of some who oppose Obama that something will turn up.

That being said, let the "chips fall where they may".

It is ridiculous to suggest that the staffs of a sitting governor and those of a sitting U.S. senator from the same state would never have cause to communicate.

The rub is whether any such communication had anything to do with improper and illegal financial or other promises or arrangements between the Blagojevich and Obama camps.

I think Fitzgerald was correct to arrange for Blagojevich's arrest when he did.

Had he not done so, Blagojevich would likely have gone ahead and appointed a replacement for the Senate seat, and with these revelations swireling about, that appointment would be tainted and effectiveness of the office itself diminished.

The point is to put a stop on corruption, and regain some integrity in the political process there.

Having a tainted appointment representing Illinois is not the way to go about this.

I have faith in Fitzgerald. He is not "political".

He goes after both parties.

Fitzgerald did not waver in his resolve, nor become intimidated by the Bush whitehouse, when he was investigating Scooter Libby.

His indictments and timing were right back then.

Just as they are today on Blagojevich.

Lincoln spinning?
Abe is laughing because Blagojevich was a rookie. Blago threatening the Tribune. Hell man, do it right. Do like Abe. Send in troops to destroy the presses. Worked like a charm on over 300 Northern newspapers and magazines that wrote editorials Abe disliked. He should have sent in the Ill. National Guard. Rookie.

Yes, Mr. Fox, Get Right On It!
Foxy is going to get right on it and have all his chickens checked as they roost in his hen house. This is ludicrous! His hands are dirty, but there's so much "face" to lose for people who voted for him, that his voters will keep dodging the truth. That's the sad part. The first black president is proving to be a mere man- not a god. Can any good come from a man who has concealed and denied so much about himself already? He's got his tripod squad to help him weasel out of the corruption he must certainly be afiliated with in coming from the Chicago machine. There are none so blind as those who will not see.
Trust but verify? The trust part has gone down the tubes here for sure, IMO.

Bright Side
On the bright side, Patrick Fitzgerald has emerged as a strong man in the best sense: courage, integrity, intelligence, endurance--and promise.

I like him for the same reason I liked Palin: both people have reputations for rolling up their sleeves, getting out the broom and mop, and going to work!

Seriously, between Barack's magnificent achievement which nothing can becloud, and Fitzgerald's public-spirited press conference, I believe America is just getting started.

Gov. &%# Under the Bus
Well, Obama has now thrown the Illinois governor under the bus with his call for the resignation of this shady fellow. How many more people will he have to throw under the bus--maybe the entire American population?

I don't trust Fitzgerald. He strung out the Palme investigation until he could get someone--poor Scooter Libby--even though he knew who had revealed Palme's identity early on. Never forget attorneys are politicians, too. Fitzgerald may be just an Obama Kool-Ade drinker who acted to save the Messiah.

B.O.
I disasgree with Pat's conclusion. It can only be a good thing if America wakes up to the fact that B.O. is an utter sleazebag before he takes office. If his presidency is compromised from the beginning, it will make it much harder for him to achieve his aim of transforming us to a balkanized, socialist workers paradise. Piffle on those who wish him success. I pray he fails spectacularly.

just saying
I really think that Conservatives trying to tar Obama as corrupt are going to have to come up with something better than that it is unclear that Blagojavich learned that Obama is not corrupt directly or indirectly.

Once your argument contains the fact that Obama is not corrupt it is hard to get there from the idea that one has the scandal that will bring him down for corruption.

A hidden concern...
Lost in all of this is the issue of having FBI agents (and prosecutors, for that matter) going around saying to the media: "If (Illinois) isn't the most corrupt state in the United States, it's certainly one hell of a competitor. I think even the most cynical agents in our office were shocked."
Blago is scum, doubtless, but I've grown sick of prosecutors and such using the MSM to tell us how guilty suspects are (and of course, what a wonderful job they did in catching them), all on our dime.

Not sure were you get the idea lon
that Obama is not courrupt. Just look at the people he has picked for his cabnet you would be hard press to find a more corrupt set of politicians. Either Obama has no problem with this because he has no problem with corruption being corrupt his own self or he is an incompetant fool an empty suit others are using as a front. I have to think a corrupt but competant president aka Nixon is better for the country than an incompetant fool aka carter.

Blogo
He will probably not go to prison, but he will get a pile of money on the Q.T.from the dem party to keep quiet.Of course we will not hear about it.

Rahm
Rahm Emmanuel is NOT lily white. I consider him to be Barry's first bad action.

Not "something is rotten"
But rotten surface-to-core; bandu hit it on the nail with "bh0 walks on cesspool and the cesspool smells like a rose" by comparison!

CHICAGO? EVERYBODY DUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Corruption is the name of the game in Chicago. It has been since Joe Kennedy payed off the Daley machine and the Unions for his son Jack Kennedy who would go on to be another short lived President of America. It all looked like Nixon had it in the bag and would win the election but all of a sudden from behind came Jack Kennedy to take America's closest election by somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 votes. Oh, don't forget that good ole Joe did his thingy in West Virginia and Hollywood too.

While growing up I kept hearing about Mayor Daley and I wondered at one point...does this guy ever die? Then getting older I bumped into a really short guy surrounded by what looked to be Mafiaso like thugs...I inquired and was told this was Mayor Richard Daley Jr...on his way to see his son at Ft Benning, Georgia...I thought..WOW! thats kinda neat...his son is in the Army. Then I remembered...this is the same name I grew up with asking myself...does this Daley thing ever die?

Today and throughout the 2008 Presidential campaign I heard about Obama and his Cook county players...today I picked up what Lester Maddox used to call: The Atlanta Urinal-Constipation and low and behold it was a column on the editorial page written by none other than a real Mafiaso Terrorist Turned Professor by the name of William (BILL) Ayers...ole Lester was right afterall...this paper still stinks...thats why...if you venture down to the Georgia capitol and see Governor Lester Maddox picture you will see in front of him is a picture of his wife Virgina and a Holy Bible and directly to his rear-end you will see an stinking fish wrapped up in a Atlanta-Urinal-Constipation...how appropriate I thought.

By the way, we all know that the Illinois Governor is a A.O........but could someone answer me one question? He was wire tapped for five years...what law did he break? Did he ever break any law? Is there a new law that says you cannot say certain things that are not politically correct?

Run Jesse Run !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, we all know that the Illinois Governor is a A.O........but could someone answer me one question? He was wire tapped for five years...what law did he break? Did he ever break any law? Is there a new law that says you cannot say certain things that are not politically correct? Perhaps the Governor was just doing and saying what is normal for Illinois Governors...Wow! Wonder what we would learn if the Oval office was bugged for five years? Oh! Was Jesse Jr doing what his dad taught him afterall? His father knows how to shake down corporations and maybe this is why his son has a Pepsi distributorship? Run Jesse Run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LMAO!!

Springfield
Blagojevich Defense: I've done absolutely nothing wrong. In fact, I was playing Republican by getting the country turned around with some good old free market activity. Reganomics, anyone?

Fitzgerald
He should have been shot for the lying he did to get Scooter convicted where there was NO CRIME to start with!! And now, here he pulls up before everything can be completed???

I'm truly wondering about his affiliations.

Don't blame me, Pat.....
I voted for you.....!

I agree with
Jerseyvet, lightning_fast, Bandu, Barbara, sir aslan, Nightowl 872.

The Hussein guy is so secretive about his birth, college and past records that he is a serious competitor for the Stalin guy in grave.

The Patrick guy is doing "play to get paid" and will soon be rewarded as his secret police chief.

To Blago: Get Paid, baby, Get Paid
Ask yourself this question?

What conceivable motivation would Gov. Blagojevich have for resigning at this time? The answer is NONE.

You think he is going to take the fall all by himself, while the Obamas, the Jesse Jacksons, Rahm Emanuel, and God knows who else, walk away scot-free?

Bu!!$h!t!!

A Chicago Democrat Machine politician[read:crook] as shrewd as Blagojevich [who, contrary to the message being pushed in the MSM], is not crazy.

Don't you think this man realizes that the only leverage he has, in all this, is to scare the be-Jesus out of whatever cronies he DOES have in Chicago and Springfield to intervene on his behalf in dealing with the Feds to reduce his eventual punishment?

The only real Ace he has, IS his governorship.

Does anyone really think Blagojevich, who tried to sell a Senator appointment, would give up a governorship for nothing?

Get real.

Blagojevich is STILL dealing, baby, and you'd better believe it!

Nobody would go to bat for him if he steps down voluntarily, but somebody, right now & this minute, is trying to put a "package" together for him that will make his fall much easier to take [to cover their own @$$].

Additionally, NOBODY in Springfield wants the exposure an impeachment hearing would bring on their possible part in one [or more] of his ongoing & previous schemes.

This explains all these calls for resignation and looking to the IL Supreme Court to intercede.

BLAGO, baby, you stay just where you are!!

Make the rats sweat bullets and blood!!

...and get paid, baby, get paid.

The Democratic Culture of Corruption
The failed policies of the Obama administration are off to a flying start. They have jumped the gun (illegal under track rules).

Goopers
This is where the Goopers blew it during the election. Rather than Ayers, Wright, the terrorist nonsense, etc., you should have attacked Obama as part of the Chicago machine. That could have beat him.
Too late now.
Enjoy the next 8 years.

Be prepared to see more of this...
The One will come out unscathed, but someone in the new administration will have to take the hit on this one to keep the Messiah's nose clean. But what's of great import, as Buchanan points out, is the response. Same with Georgia. Without some cardboard-breast groping speechwriter and a telepromter, this guy has no clue what to say in a crisis. The world is watching... they are learning about this guy... whomever's pulling his strings needs to rein him in a little tighter or Biden's prophecy will certainly come to fruition.
