Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Having savaged each other for a year, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have now formed a rare partnership in power. Not since James Garfield chose James G. Blaine has a new president chosen his principal rival to be secretary of state.

What does this tell us?

First, don't take campaign oratory all that seriously.

Second, unlike Dennis Kucinich, Ted Kennedy, Ron Paul or Jesse Helms, Hillary and Barack are pragmatists. They do not let ideology or past insults get in the way of a mutually beneficial deal.

But this is not some Hitler-Stalin pact of American politics.

Dick Morris has it right. As in a parliamentary system, where Cabinet members come straight off the majority party front bench, Barack, as prime minister, is knitting together a coalition government that allocates its highest honors to its greatest stars.

As Tony Blair named rival Gordon Brown as chancellor of the exchequer, Barack made Joe Biden his vice president, Hillary his secretary of state and Bill Richardson his secretary of commerce. Had John Edwards not fouled his nest, he, too, would be in the Cabinet. Perhaps attorney general.

And while Barack has taken a risk naming Hillary, with her national following and ruthless courtiers, Hillary's investment is even greater. Should a clash erupt, as it did between Ronald Reagan and Al Haig, Barack, though at great cost, can terminate her and her career. The idea that a cashiered secretary of state could challenge President Obama in 2012, capture the nomination and win, after humiliating and dumping our first African-American president, is absurd.

And the Clintons know it. Absent divine intervention, Obama is the nominee in 2012. Hillary has to know this is likely her last chance to make history. Thus she seized the offer of State, and Bill agreed to go the Full Monty on his financial relationships.

What does this marriage of convenience, with Biden, Bob Gates and Gen. Jim Jones as ushers, mean for U.S. foreign policy?

Methinks the antiwar left has the crying towel out too early.

Our new decider's heart is still on the left. Moreover, his political interests argue for relegating to the trash bin of history a Bush-neocon policy of endless war until the Middle East resembles the Middle West. America cannot sustain the wars that Bush's policy produced, nor those it promises.

Look, then, for Obama to make a large, early down payment on his pledge to withdraw all U.S. combat brigades from Iraq within 16 months. Though the Status of Forces Agreement accepted by Iraq doubles the time Obama has to pull out, to December 2011, the nation, not just the left, wants out, with but a single caveat: America does not want a Saigon ending.

What happens after -- whether Shia attack Shia, or join to crush Sunnis, or Arabs engage Kurds -- is not a war Americans are willing to intervene in with any new surge of U.S. troops.

About Afghanistan there is a gathering consensus that victory over a resurgent Taliban with a sanctuary in Pakistan's border region cannot be achieved without an infusion of U.S. troops this country is unwilling to support.

Escalating the war means more air strikes that have alienated the Afghan people as well as President Kharzi. More Predator strikes in a Pakistan where anti-Americanism is rife and the government is besieged hardly seems a promising policy.

What is the U.S. bottom line in Kabul? Not the impossible dream of a democracy modeled on our own but a government committed to keeping al-Qaida out. Given the bloody beating the Taliban have taken for seven years, they may be amenable to such an arrangement.

But the first test of the Obama-Clinton team may be Iran.

Tehran claims its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, and the International Atomic Energy Agency has never declared it in violation of the non-proliferation treaty. Yet, the suspicion is broad and deep in Washington and Tel Aviv that Iran is hell-bent on building an atom bomb. Obama and Hillary have both said that will not happen, no matter what it takes.

If war with Iran is to be averted, the new team must move swiftly to talk to Tehran and put its cards on the table. It is here that the potential for a split between Barack and Hillary is greatest.

If Likud's "Bibi" Netanyahu wins the Israeli election, he will push hard for U.S. air strikes on Iran's nuclear sites, and push back against any Obama deal with Tehran. With the Israeli lobby and a Jewish community that gave Barack 80 percent of its votes, plus the neocons and Evangelical right calling for strikes against Iran's nuclear sites, would the Obama-Clinton team stand united -- against war?

Would Hillary, a former senator from New York who relied even more heavily than Barack on Jewish contributions and votes, stand by Barack if the two disagree on whether the survival of Israel is at stake?

On second thought, the antiwar left is right to be nervous.

Well Pat......correct again....
"On second thought, the antiwar left is right to be nervous."....

lol....yes, no kumbaya...

She hangs in with Bill.
The Obama phenom is shaping up into a prank. He's a con-artist without a clue as to governance, so he's slapping re-treads into place in the hope that the pundits do what Pat's doing: try to read the tea leaves! The tactic being, if you can't dazzle with brilliance, then baffle with BS!
The last four Secretaries-of-State have proven, more or less, that anyone can fill the bill. Just hop on a plane & play piano for the queen! It's a cameo slot.
Musical-chairs is what we'll see for four years. One disenchanted re-tread after another exiting to head back to private practice on main-street. That and fund-raising.

Obama Ode
A song on the Jewish Lyre.
To be sung at 80 percent.

He bringeth peace upon all the world
Soldier sitteth with talib whopper virgin sipping coketh thru rolled billion dollar bills on a ledge in Wazitistan
Da Mullahs areth justa rap group from south Chika Go
Somali pirate fixeth, painteth and returneth all jacked boats back to their owners with sincere apologies
Borith Yelthin stareth deep into the thoul of The One and finds eternity
Hugo Chavez sends columns of tankers loaded with free oil up the Holy Coast

And all the middle class folks around the globe smart enuf to go on welfare shalt receive a mansion and a Rolls.

Exciting Times.
Today's Prelutsky, Krauthammer, Buchanan: no wonder my daughter has gone from that crazy life I have been supporting in San Francisco, to live in a Buddhist monastery in Santa Fe. There's hope.

Still, that Buddhist monastery ain't cheap.

Like Jim Morrison exclaimed, "Nobody gets out of here alive."

Sorry to be so esoteric this morning, but it's all these guy's fault.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Somewhere between the conceits of Pat's article and the biblical allusions of Charles Krauthammer's--lies the truth.

We are all in the metaxu domain, the in-between.

My head is in the clouds (after Obama's miraculous election) but my feet are still planted firmly on the ground of Pat's realism.

One thing for sure as the world careens from cataclysm to cataclysm: the Age of Ideology is over. When you're in a hole, the first rule is to stop digging. Let's keep it simple and survive. (from "Reflections on Kozinski's "Being There".)
*********************************************

No wonder Ahmadinejad, the President of Iran, was recently rushed to the hospital. (He had just heard that there was a real chance Obama would win.)

Jack David: Great comment
But idealists and ideologues never go away. The argument between those pointing to the heavens and those pointing to earth is the enduring constant in Western civilization.

Think Aristotle v. Plato.

Billary as Secretary of State?
Barack Obama’s decision to name Hillary Clinton the Secretary of State post could well turn out to be his first major blunder, for these obvious reasons:

First, there’s the inseparable bond with her husband Bill. Given the duo’s unquenchable thirst for power, they would not be content to play second fiddle. From day one they would be scheming to usurp control of the White House. Once they get a foothold, Obama would be hard-pressed to rein them in.
Then, there’s the Clintons’ long history of corruption, deception and sleaze—Whitewatergate, Pardongate, Cattle-futuresgate, Chinagate, Filegate, Fellatiogate, the using of uniformed marines as waiters, the plundering of White House property, the Impeachment and near conviction, the punitive IRS audits, the violent deaths of potentially incriminating witness. This alone would provide Obama’s enemies with all the grime they needed to smear his presidency.

Consider further that unlike a Condoleezza Rice or a Madelaine Albright—not to mention bona fide statesmen like Henry Kissinger, Dean Rusk and John Foster Dulles--Hillary Clinton lacks the educational and cultural gravitas to represent our nation abroad. Her lawyering in Arkansas and stint in Congress doesn’t quite cut it. She did get 18 million votes in the Democratic primaries, probably more than Obama, but a large proportion of those votes were cast by diehard feminists and the less educated, hardly the constituency whose support lends credibility to a Secretary of State.

Barack Obama should recall the reasons why he didn’t choose Hillary as his VP running mate. For his and the nation’s sake, let us hope that within his first year in office he reconsiders and induces the Clintons to quit the Secretary of State post. Hillary’s coyness in accepting the post--making Obama beg, in effect--was an ominous sign.

Carlos the Carpenter

Let Us Pray
Obama's choice of Hillary as Secretary of State represents the triumph of hope over experience. The Clintons are power seekers and not even a Chicago politician can stop their relentless drive for power. Obama is like a newly born calf surrounded by tough old steers ready to rip his belly open at the first chance.

Muddle-headed voters appointed a complete amateur to the toughest job in the world. Anyone who buys his stock expecting to see it rise is taking an enormous gamble, as are all of us who refrained from the Messiah stock.

reemergence of realism
That is what is going on here.

And that is a good thing.

Buchanan recognizes as much with his comment that Obama will "relegate to the trash bin of history a Bush-neocon policy of endless war until the Middle East resembles the Middle West. America cannot sustain the wars that Bush's policy produced, nor those it promises".

That sounds like realism to me.

Twilight time for the neocons.

Buchanan further elaborates on this general theme when correctly observing that Americans want out of Iraq, but not "a la Saigon", and that whatever Iraqis do to one another after our departure, ain't our problem.

Nor should it have ever been.

Afghanistan/Pakistan is where the Islamist threat had always been.

It may be difficult, but still possible, to create a rift between Taliban and Al Qaida.

Without Taliban/Pakistan support, Al Qaida could not sustain itself in the tribal regions.

good column
And I think that makes two in a row for Buchanan.

Everybody has reason to be nervous about Afghanistan. There seemed to be real opportunity to improve the situation in 2002, but the Bush people decided that was hard work, and it was more glamorous to go after Iraq. Now it is not clear that something good can be salvaged. Buchanan is right that the best will be something which reaches some accomodation with at least some of the Taliban. Obviously not-ideal, but for a Bush adventure not ideal is still pretty good.

Iran is a problem, but it is hard to see why Obama or Clinton would bomb Iran on Netanyahu's say so. America is not really in the thrall of Israel or AIPAC. And bombing Iran is a pretty stupid idea. Even the bomb crazy Bushies have seen that.

Obama was never anti war!
He never ran on that platform! So the democrats are mostly OK with these appointments. Something like 94% are happy with his appointments. (You can't please everyone.) Even 79% of the democrats are happy with the Gates appointment.

Obama was always against the Iraq War, which even Karl Rove now admits was a mistake. AQ is in Afghanistan/Pakistan.

And of course Obama would prefer diplomatic solutions, if possible. Wouldn't you? We're losing blood and treasure overseas - at a time when we can ill afford it.

Marriage or Divorce
It is more like "Death will us part".

Although I have not practiced Family/Divorce Law in many years, I offer my services pro bono.

Hillary's book, "No Child Left Behind", may come in handing regarding Obama.

An important book
Dear participants! In discussion of President-elect Obama’s administration, this book is definitely of interest: AMERICA’S HALF-BLOOD PRINCE: BARACK OBAMA’S “STORY OF RACE AND INHERITANCE”, by Steve Sailer.
I actually read this book on the internet: very informative; and now I bought it. Sure, it is not in “Barnes and Noble”, not even on Amazon; here is the place to order it: lulu (Townhall regulations did not allow me to place regular reference). I do recommend this book.

Mr. Buchanan ...
... you are right, again. OsiSpeaks.com

US says:
"Patriots One and All ... There is ...
still time to sign the WND petition to compel Obama to verify that he IS a Natural Born Citizen... just go to this link and sign..."

Just HOW would WND compel anything?

Buchanan made serious error
He used the marriage, rather than the apter (in politics, especially among groattards such as Dhimmicruds) shack-up model!

So, the question turns out invalid.

Campaign Rhetoric = Lies?
I am not willing to accept the notion that campaign rhetoric shouldn't be taken seriously. Particularly with a candidate like Obama, where the only thing we have to judge him by is rhetoric since he has no record. If I assume that it is all a pack of lies, then how do I cast an informed vote? My plan is to hold Obama to every promise he made and I hope other Republicans do the same.

My gosh Pat....
she is still married to Bill! So she must know the art of the compromise only too well.

Actually, I mean that as levity, but really Barack and Hillary are not all that funny.

Will it last; only time will tell.

Diane

Obama, Clinton, Iran
Buchanan is right about Obama, Hillary and Iran. Yes, the anti-war left has a lot to be nervous about. So does Obama and Hillary. Such a dilemma? Afghanistan, Iran, nuclear weapons, Osama. I wonder what information the “new national intelligence” will provide them (as opposed to the “old national intelligence”). Both are about to find out what it is really like to sit in the hot seat and make the decisions that Bush has had to make. At least they have most of the media bent over and taking it all in.

So what is the latest (lowest) figure that Obama has come up with for taxing the rich? Everyone over $150,000? Or has that “changed” again?

The more “change” we have, the more things seem to stay the same. Politics! I was just hoping that we wouldn’t have to hear the name “Clinton” again. It’s like changing a baby’s diaper and then putting on a used, soiled and old one in it’s place. Get out the Desitin Ointment. And maybe some hemorrhoidal cream.

Pat, why did you have to ruin
what was an otherwise good column, especially the Hitler-Stalin pact line, and the John Edwards 'fouling his next' line, with your seemingly irresistible antismeitic jabs at Bibi Netanyahu, and the Israeli lobby? Ruined the first 90% of the article. Check in with a shrink.

Change your score card
Obama was right with him change is consent, during the campaign Hillary would be a foreign policy nightmare for the country as president he taps her experties.

svpallala
The Democrats shouldn't win, but the Republicans deserve to lose. Here's why.

It's Republican thought that has brought on this financial meltdown. Spending more than you have will surely lead to disaster.

It was Republicans who spend more than the Democrats. They increased pork barrel spending from 3,000 to 14,000 projects a year, NOT PAID FOR.

They have engaged in a five and half year social engineering project in the Middle East that costs $120 billion a year and may well last another 100 years, NOT PAID FOR.

They have added another layer of entitlement spending that costs $50 billion a year called Medicare Prescription, NOT PAID FOR.

Mandated $4 billion a year in ethanol subsidies, as well as drastically increased cotton, sugar, soybean, corn, wheat handouts, NOT PAID FOR.

Doubled the size of the Department of Education, NOT PAID FOR.

How would you pay for all this spending? It took 210 years for the first $5 trillion and debt and only 7 years of Republican control to double it. It's nigh time for some fiscal Republicanism.

Patriots unite ... there is ...
still time to sign the WND petition to compel Obama to verify that he IS a Natural Born Citizen... just go to this link and sign...

80% of Jewish voters went with Obama?!?

Pat Buchanan writes: "With the Israeli lobby and a Jewish community that gave Barack 80 percent of its votes..."

80% ?!?

Really?

For shame...

will Obama be meeting Vince?
Ever hear of Vince Foster ?
An older friend of mine(Mexican) said to me
with his hand looking like a pistol, "he will not see 2012 with Hillary around !"
Then he said, "well, maybe he will, he has lots of protection". Then I said "yeah, like both Kennedys"!
Elvis

He has to deal with reality
Barack and Hillarys idealism will both be tested. Al Qaida, Chavez, Cuba and Putin will be putting this admin to the test rather quickly. On top of dealing with the bleakest economic forecast in the last 125 years , he will have his hands full just keeping a manufacturing base alivre in this country. He has to slay the hydra 1st, and then his plans for social and medical care utopia can be worked on.
