Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Last week, the front pages of the world press blossomed with photos of four Iranian rockets, fired in salvo, heading skyward.

The image was powerful, and the message reinforced by the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Should Israel attack Iran, said Ali Shira, Tel Aviv will be "set on fire."

U.S. reaction was swift and bristling. "Rice Says U.S. Will Defend Gulf," declared the headline over the AP story that began:

"Condoleezza Rice flexed America's muscles in the Middle East Thursday, forcefully warning Iran the U.S. won't ignore threats and will take any action necessary to defend friends and interests in the Persian Gulf. ...

"Rice said Iran's leaders should understand that Washington won't dismiss provocations from Tehran and has the ability to counter them. 'I don't think the Iranians are too confused, either, about the capability and the power of the United States to do exactly that.'"

And what were the results of last week's missile crisis in the Gulf? Tensions rose, strengthening Tehran's embattled Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. And oil prices shot from $136 a barrel to a record $147.

That $11-a-barrel spike alone translates into $25 million a day in fresh revenue for Ahmadinejad and Co. And as the United States imports 13 million of the 20 million barrels we daily consume, that $11 spike in price translates into $143 million more sucked out of the U.S. economy every day -- into the coffers of Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and OPEC.

Can we not see who benefits and who pays for this war talk?

Every day the war drums beat, the mullahs get richer and we get poorer. Which raises the question. Was this mini-missile crisis cooked up by the mullahs to rip off Uncle Sam? For by week's end it appeared the Americans had been had, big-time.

Saturday's New York Times reported that that photo of the four Iranian missiles fired in salvo had been doctored.

One rocket appears twice in the same photo. The large missile, on inspection, was not the new Shahab-3b, which has a range of 1,200 miles, but a Shahab-3a, with a range of 900 miles. It is no longer in production.

The missiles fired with the Shahab-3a turned out to be Scuds, a short-range missile that is no threat to Israel.

The second day's firing turns out to have been of a single anti-ship missile. Iranian TV showed one firing from three angles, making it appear as though three missiles had been fired in succession.

"The bottom line is that the Iranians are tweaking our noses," said Charles Vick, an expert on Iran's missile forces.

Under Secretary of State Nick Burns then splashed cold water on Iran's alleged crash program to acquire nuclear weapons.

"Iran has not yet perfected (uranium) enrichment," said Burns, "and, as a direct result of U.N. sanctions, Iran's ability to procure technology or items of significance to its missile programs, even dual-use items, is being impaired."

Though the ex-head of Mossad, Shabtai Shavit, says Iran may be one year away from a bomb -- and will use it on Israel -- according to the latest U.S. National Intelligence Estimate, Iran shut down its nuclear weapons program in 2003.

Iran, says Burns, has not yet mastered the technology of converting uranium gas into fuel for use in power plants, let alone the stuff of bombs. And even if Iran is one day able to enrich to weapons grade, she would still have to build and test a nuclear device, then weaponize it to fit atop a missile and deploy a missile force. All in all, says Burns, Iran's progress with uranium enrichment has been "modest."

There is thus no imminent crisis to justify war on Iran.

Yet, what is Nancy Pelosi's Democratic House doing?

Some 220 members, a majority, have endorsed House Concurrent Resolution 362. This virtual war resolution "demands" that President Bush initiate a blockade to halt all Iranian imports of refined petroleum products and impose "stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran."

A Democratic House that came to power denouncing the rush to war on Iraq is about to vote to demand that Bush commit an act of war against Iran.

The front men for 362 are liberal Gary Ackerman of New York and conservative Mike Pence of Indiana. But the juice behind them is that of the Israeli lobby AIPAC, which is marching in step with Israel.

Last week, Mossad's chief, Meir Dagan, was here to make the case for war on Iran. This week, Defense Minister Ehud Barak visits Dick Cheney and maybe Bush. Next week, it is the head of Israel's armed forces.

Israel and its Fifth Column in this city seek to stampede us into war with Iran. Bush should rebuff them, and the American people should tell their congressmen: You vote for 362, we don't vote for you.

Pat is right - all we are doing by stoking this fire is to transfer more of our wealth to countries like Iran. But of course which US party would be the beneficiary of an electorate worried about the start of another war?

Okay, Pat.
You let us know as soon as Iran's progress toward the development of nuclear weapons becomes 'immodest,' so we can then call it a 'real crisis.' In the meantime, we'll all petition our leaders to go easy on the nut-jobs running Iran because all the nasty talk hikes up the price of a barrel.
You & Reagan... same party?

Patsy the Anti-Semite
Why does anyone give this antisemitic hatemonger a springboard to spew his hateful crap. Patsy Boy needs to go crawl back into the LaBrea Tar Pits where all of the other fossils rest. I'm sorry to see Townhall continue to post this relics columns. Shame on Patsy Boy and all of those who admire him. We're better than that. Mr. Buckley is spinning in his grave knowing that Patsy Boy is being listened to.

The rich idiot on the block.
The Sand Ninny's hate the Jews sooo bad and love our deep pockes sooo much. This will go on forever Nancy P.

Don Jones

Have We Learned Nothing?
Pat is calling for a calm, cool, level-headed approach to middle-east policy which puts our own interests ahead of anyone else's - including Israel.

What's wrong with that?

He has been right when most others were not, in the past.

You don't have to agree with everything Pat says to see the wisdom in much of his counsel. He is a shrewd analyst of world affairs, with an extensive knowledge of history.

His voice needs to be heard.

Global warming?
Burning oil fields, anyone? Oh, it's already been done by Saddam Hussein and he's left the building.

The real problem revealed
"But the juice behind them is that of the Israeli lobby AIPAC, which is marching in step with Israel. Bush should rebuff them, and the American people should tell their congressmen: You vote for 362, we don't vote for you."

Interesting conclusion, as I thought that where he was going in this article was the usual conservative argument for starting WWIII.

Of course, the usual tired old cries of "you are a Nazi" will ensue. Well, as an American, I take my country's interests ahead of Israel. I don't give a crap about Israel, and see no reason why any real American should.

Anti-Israel does not equal Anti-Semitic
Would someone please explain to me how being against Israeli policy automatically makes a person an anti-semite? Why does the level of discourse here always seem to boil down to that? I see this throughout the Townhall forums as a whole, not just here in Mr. Buchanan's columns.

Israel is a NATION with a GOVERNMENT; it has the same fallability as any other nation. Why the United States blindly follows along with Israeli foreign policy is beyond me. If Israel is attacked, then fine, defend our 'ally'; but how long can we continue in a strike-first mentality before we truly lose our national identity?

George Washington said it best...
From his farewell speech:

"So likewise, a passionate attachment of one Nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite Nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest, in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter, without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite Nation of privileges denied to others, which is apt doubly to injure the Nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained; and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld. And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens, (who devote themselves to the favorite nation,) facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation."

Words that still ring true more than 200 years later.

Reinstate the draft!
America simply cannot continue on this perpetual warpath in the Middle East using an all volunteer force; we need your sons and daughters America! Contact your Congressperson immediately and lobby for the reinstatement of the draft! Get that lottery rolling! Please remember to demand that deferrals for college or university students aren't offered; we need to beef up that officer corps ladies and gentlemen!

Onward!

Taunting the Tiger
One wonders if Iran's leaders are just following the Saddam Hussein model pretending to have nuclear weapons or WMD so they can be the big guy on the block and deter enemies from attacking. Unfortunately, Hussein miscalculated and swung at the end of a rope.

Iran's leaders must know the same fate may await them if they're not careful. Israel does not play games. It will do whatever is necessary to survive. Iranian citizens should learn this calculus for their own survival.

the droolers will shout down rationality
Pat Buchanan has written a compelling piece.

Certain interests, including this whitehouse and sympathetic media outlets, abetted by an Israeli lobby, have so distorted and twisted reality that many Americans now hyperventilate with the same rage toward Iran that previously was reserved for Saddam and his supposed weapons of mass destruction, his relationship with Al Qaida.

The same interests are at it again.

This reminds me of Orwell's "1984" where the government conjured up the image of the evil Emmanual Goldstein at the cinema so the government's subjects, faces contorted in rage, could shout insults at the convenient villain and scapegoat Goldstein.

I think it was termed "two minutes hate".

There has to always be a villain out there, to justify the neocon wetdream of perpetual war, perpetual intervention.

Now, I am under no illusions about Iran, or any other nation.

I suspect Iran will do what most other nations do...act in its national interest.

Buchanan has already alluded to this on the manufactured crisis where oil prices spiked.

Will rationality triumph this time?

Or will Americans be duped yet again?

P.S.
And for the record I also fault Gary Ackerman and Mike Pence, and other democrats and republicans who are jumping at the bit for another war.

AmericaFirst 4:03 posting.
Excellent and most relevant quotation from George Washington.

I suspect, however, that a few people will begin questioning George Washington's patriotism, given this quote.

He might even be a traitor, with some in this bunch.

At any rate, nice quotation.

Have a cigar.

"Israel's Fifth Column"?
Now, now. It's time for your cookie, Pat...there are no Elders of Zion under your bed...

To AmericaFirst re 4:03 AM Post
George Washington was outlining a foreign policy in the circumstances that America faced in the 1790's. George Washington would be the first to tell you that America needs to formulate its foreign policy today given the circumstances of the 21st century; and those circumstances include that it does not take months of travelling by ship to reach America from European and Middle Eastern shores. There are airplanes and missiles, and there are radical Islamic jihadists who hate our freedom.

Phil Byler
I am not discounting the threat posed by radical Islamists.

And perhaps military strikes on Iranian facilities may be warranted.

But given this administration's trackrecord, I need to see LOTS more evidence before signing on to yet another war.

I hope we are not duped into military action on Iran like we were on justifying military action on Iraq, with Saddam's wmds, his operational relationship with Al Qaida(which were simply false).

We should do what is in the interests of the United States.

Not Ireland, Not Zimbabwe, and Not Israel.

No offense to any of those states.

On your point alleging changing circumstances would alter Washington's foreign policy, is that compatible with many on the right who claim changing circumstances must not alter the meaning of our Constitution...the originalist view?

If our nation should adhere to an originalist view of the Constitution, why not the originalist view of George Washington over his worries foreign entanglements, and the interests and factions which accompany them, would induce our Beloved Republic to act in a manner contrary to what is in our interest?

That does not make me an isolationist.

But it does place me squarely with those who place America first.

To Phil Byler...
I understand historical differences, thank you. Our policy of interventionism has allowed us to be pulled into areas of the world where we don't belong. I don't see the world through rose-tinted glasses and I understand the situation at hand when it comes to Iran; due to my current proximity to that country, I can't help but cast a wary eye to the East each day.

On the other hand, regardless of whether we see ourselves as the world's policeman, there is still the issue of national sovereignty at hand. At what point are we considered a rogue nation, attacking anybody that could potentially attack us? And once we start down that road, when and how do we stop? There will be a point when America loses the moral high ground; we can't fight every evil in the world and we will destroy ourselves from within if we try.

what a maroon!
"..Islamic jihadists who hate our freedom."
Jeepers, how idiotic. This just indicates how some folks get only the Faux News take on the world. Ever hear of Switzerland? No Islamic jihadist attacks there, and they're pretty free folks. Perhaps we should believe OBL when he tells us that the US was attacked because we're over there. (And he wasn't being waterboarded at the time, either!) You might want to engage your own brain cells and see a connection to attacks here and US foreign policy, which seems to be something along the lines of "the US is the only superpower now, so we can bully anyone to do anything with impunity."

What Are We Really Worried About?
Washington simply suggested common sense and clarity in the pursuit of our self interest. Buchanan, in this case, is doing the same. Ironic how a nation with a Trident force that has 144 independently targeted warheads per sub, a fleet of B1 bombers, a group of carriers - each of which has the firepower incinerate an area the size of Washington and Oregon combined, and a massive existing missle system in hardened silos, worries as much about Iran as it does.

It seems clear that the worry isn't Iran. The worry some have is that if Iran finally tests an actual warhead - and remember - that is a percursor to actually having such a warhead, that we won't bring that power to bear. It certainly isn't do we have the power to prevent Iran from using such a warhead, if and when they get it. That's self evident. The only issue, then, is do we hit them now, or see what they do, and hit them then - if they go ahead and develop a nuclear weapon.

Heroic Pat Buchanan
It's nice to have Pat Buchanan's reasoned approach to foreign policy on Townhall. It makes a nice contrast to Frank Gaffney's fear-mongering and war-mongering piece, also available here.

Iran is a weak, third-world country with a GNP about the same as Norway's. They have not invaded another country in over 200 years. They do, however, resist US hegemony over the region, and for this reason, the criminal Bush administration has decided they must be crushed.

As Pat points out, expanding our current immoral, unconstitutional war in the Mideast to include Iran will sent the price of fuel skyrocketing. This will likely bankrupt our already-weakened country. In the end, we will have to withdraw for economic reasons.

And to think that, if we wanted fuel, we could just buy the damned stuff, rather than engage in incredibly costly wars for it.

Chess
If Bill 362 passes,Iran will stop taking dollars and demand that all oil payments be made in "Juans".This will ingratiate them to China and throw our currency into "Free-Fall".Iran is a small country with large economic power.Sometimes when you play with Fire, you get burned!Stop PLAYING...

Diplomacy v. Armed conflict
We desperately need to strategically focus on diplomacy as a tool of foreign policy. These personal wars [anyone really believe Bush didn't attack Saddam for attempting to assassinate his father?] need to stop. Our military is being devastated. I was in 21 years and never was returned to duty in a foreign country. Today's soldiers are going over 2, 3, 4, 5 and more times and getting their tours extended. For WHAT? The sword rattlers have never served a day in their life! ENOUGH! I'm no fan of Obama but I'm also no fan of the status quo.

Buchanan raises the stakes
Merely "tweaking our noses" to disuade us from supporting Israel, if it must preempively end Iran's ability to carry out its stated intention of destruction, trivializes the threat to Israel and our national interests.

Buchanan's supporting quotes are as easily acquired as those of Henry Ford or Charles Lindberg prior our entry into WWII, another error that could have been avoided by Pat's sage advice if only he were on the scene.

Only Buchanan could cite the latest NIE estimate of Iran's nuclear reform as evidance of Israel's dark plot.. and of course that of its Jewish American cohorts.

Bottom Line per Buchanan; If Israel dares react to the promise of its imminent destruction it is only to "stampede us" into war. Buchanan would be well suited to occupy a seat on the UN's Human Rights Commission where all things malignant emanate from Israel.

Patsy Is Becoming Unhinged
Next time Israel defends itself, keep your trap shut, Patsy. Patsy is spiraling out of control. Think of your children, Patsy. Ooops, I forgot--you don't have any. Don't try blaming the Jews for that little, ahem, problem.

Time to come out, Pats. The truth will set you free.

Great Article Pat!

I was reading an article at Lew Rockwell (I know, it's Libertarian) where one unfortunately finds more conservative ideas than those which emanate from THIS website.

Therein is Bill Walker's article "They Didn't Attack Switzerland." "They" are Hitler and Stalin. The article proceeds to explain how the Swiss live in peace AND protect their citizens.

You crazy republicans want to slaughter the world to keep your sorry arses safe (even if the world isn't after you).

Your government has left you sitting ducks. THEY have bomb shelters, you don't. As Walker points out, the Swiss (who actually care about their citizens) spent decades making sure every home, business, school, and hospital has a bomb shelter with air filters. Wouldn't you little cowards feel safer if America did the same?

Your government (who hates you) has left you exposed to every terror (they want it that way).

SUCKERS

Another Dubious Buchanan Column
Nice try on linking the oil price jump with Iran's phony missile test ... strange, when it was revealed just how phony it was, oil prices didn't drop back to the level they were at! This is just more of Pat grasping for any rationale that might fit temporarily and the usual Pat lovers here buying this fetid pile every time!

For you fools who think we shouldn't support Israel, a virtual lone democracy and unfailing friend of ours in the Middle East, if you don't support your friends, you won't have any [remember the Carter years?]!

As for Pat's timetable on Iran's development of nukes ... the CIA has been consistently WRONG on this ... remember Pakistan, North Korea? It takes less time than these fools say!

America First:
You have it backwards. The US manipulates Israel. When Israel tries to defend itself as a sovereign nation, the State Dept steps in and asks Israel to show restraint. Israel's problem is that they allow themselves to be dictated by by the likes of Condi Clueless. They need to take care of business like they used to and stop responding to the pressure from the Arabists in the State Dept.

MDoggg
Like many idiots, you equate prudence with cowardice. When there's a crazy guy down the street waving a loaded gun and screaming he's gonna kill you and your family, do you call the cops ... I guess that would make your "yellow streak" a mile long. Can you leftists be any dumber? Try to mount an argument that a 3rd grader would not be able to refute easily!

Black president good for US but...
On a purely social level it would be good for America to have a black president.

There are even many black people that I could support in that role.

But my bottom line position - for which I cannot compromise is abortion - and Obama is totally controlled by Planned Parenthood on that issue, and it seems probably in favor of abortion on a personal level.

Besides that Obama is a pure socialist - he plays class warfare - and believes in redistribution of wealth.

That is another reason I cannot vote for him. Obama wnats us all united, unless you are "rich". Then he wants to punish you and take your money to give to the Poor? - NO to give to the GOVERNMENT!

So, for me, on a personal level, I am sincerely disappointed that the first black candidate for president cannot and will not get my vote.

Of course the left-wingers who will vote for Obama because they think it would be good for America to have a black president would never vote for a conservative black candidate for president - ever!

Just ask Clarence Thomas how much being black helped him with the Libs.

Anyone who can remember the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings knows what a "crock" it is that Libs - both black and white ones - want blacks to get ahead.

They only want Liberal/Socialist blacks like Obama to succeed - conservative blacks are treated to the most vicious kind of racism from the Democrats -both black and white.

It is just too bad for our nation that the first black candidate fo president had to be a Liberal/Socialist/Democrat.

Pat, Pat, Pat.

Pat, I always admired you until the other day when I heard you as a guest on a radio show, ranting against WWI and WWII.

Sure, war is heck, but the wild eyed vitriol I heard coming out of your mouth made me lose a great deal of respect for you.

Those wars were in the past, and we can't change them, but we can look back and see our rise to the leaders of the free world as being due to our role in those 2 wars.

The worst thing a conservative can do is fall prey to the Leftie brainwashing that calls us "The Ugly Americans" because we rescued half the world.

I say that our problems stem back to conservatives caving in to the radical Left who want to see America lie down and let the Marxist propaganda roll over us.

bomb threat
Will Iran take the chance of shooting a nuclear armed missile at Israel?Regardless of what we do,it would do untold harm to its standing in the ME,as they can't control how many people other than Israelies it would kill.If it wasn't nuclear, then Israel would hit them very hard without our help.

Powerful message?
The only message those photos sent is that Iran is still a third world country that doesn't have a single good Photoshop artist.

It also sent a message that a lot of these newspaper editors don't have the ability to recognize an obviously doctored phots, and ought to lose their jobs in favor of someone with half a brain and one eyeball open.

War
Thanks Pat for the heads up. We need to rally the support and stop the Mideast from becoming a three front war. We need an energy program that will make these people insignificant.

To jerabaub
You cannot anaologize the formulation of foreign policy with the interpretation of a written Constitution.

The "originalist" view of interpreting the Constitution referenced by you is based on popular sovereignty and respecting the act of the people in adopting that Constitution. If judges are allowed to read into various clauses of the Constitution their own policy preferences and to strike down legislation passed and signed into law by the democratically elected legislative and executive branches of government, then (in the federal judiciary) unelected judges start to act more as legislators, contrary to the separation of powers and the democratic election of the legislative and executive branches of government.

Foreign policy is a matter of policy that the executive directs with the advise of Congress. You ar enot interpreting a written document in the formulation of foreign policy. You may on certain issues need to interpret a treaty or concern yourself with a point of international law, but that is in connection with the formulation of foreign policy.

Iran, Israel and the United States
I don't know where Mr. Buchanan gets his information.

It is not at this time at all credible, given Iran's rhetoric, that they do not have the capacity to send missles to Israel and beyond. Does Mr. Buchanan know better than Israel's Mossad about Iran's missile technology? Is AIPAC acting irresponsibly and merely war-mongering, as he implies?

When Israel attacked Iraq's Osirak plant over 25 years ago, the world condemned Israel. History proved that Israel was correct in doing so. This is no different. Is Mr. Ahmadinejad juist speaking empty words just to jack up the oil price? Does Israel lack the basic right to defend itself, even if by pre-emption? Does Iran not hate the United States?

Mr. Buchanan is rabble rousing in order to stir up anti-Israel hatred, and to blame any wider repercussions that may follow (a defensive action) on her.

Perhaps Israel should offer its people up, this time in a veritable nuclear holocaust, in the name of "peace"? It is at times such as these that one true friends become known.

Phil Byler
My point was if the genius of the framers of the constitution was good enough to support an originalist interpretation of the Constitution, then certainly the genius of our first Commander in Chief, our first president, ought to be good enough in formulating the general outlines of our foreign policy.

While I strongly disagree with Bush on Iraq, I do agree with him on a few issues, such as domestic drilling, (trade)relations with Colombia, authority of ICC over Americans, and supreme court nominees(though Harriet Miers his first choice indicated just how clueless or stupid he actually is...a once in a generation chance to change the court).

Overall, I grade the Bush presidency a solid "F".

The money, priorities, lives sacrificed, on Iraq were not worth the "benefit", even assuming it becomes somewhat stable Shia based nation strongly aligned with Iran(best case scenario).

Let the next President deal with it
Given how much Bush screwed up the War on Terror so far (allowing Osama to escape into Pakistan, allowing HAMAS to participate and win the Palestinian elections, sending an undermanned, insufficient force to Iraq to find nonexistent WMD), I think the best thing for him to do is PUNT on Iran for now.

Bush has no credibility left to do anything, so he should not do anything except start cleaning out his desk.

Let the next President, whoever that is, take a fresh look at the problem. At least he will necessarily have more public support for his policy toward Iran, than Bush could ever have with his own 28% approval rating.

Let's restart this discussion on foreign policy toward Iran after next January. Till then, let's let it lie fallow.

Phil Byler
So you don't think I suffer from BDS, I also agree when G.W. Bush rescinded his dad's executive order prohibiting drilling on our continental shelf.

But Bush did that today or yesterday.

His dad's order had been in effect since 1991.

After seven and one half years into your presidency, why the rush, Mr President?

We all know Bush is trying to score crass political points on the Democrats on this drilling issue.

And he should. They are on the wrong side of this one.

And while Bush is correct, where in the hell has he been on the energy issue for the last seven years?

He was totally, almost maniacally, obsessed with Iraq, even to the point of diverting intel and military assets from Afghanistan in tracking Osama bin Laden, and sending them to Iraq.

Iraq consumed his presidency.

His recinding his dad's order on drilling won't matter until Congress also rescinds its prohibition on such drilling on our continental shelf.

Still, I give Bush credit on this.

But where were his priorities for all this time?

On my earlier post, I meant the lives and money expended on Iraq were worth alot more than what we benefitted from a socalled free Iraq.

Al Maliki does want a definite timetable for us to leave.

At least that is a step in the right direction.

I have had my fill of postings today. I am sure most folks also have had their fill of them.

So I won't be responding anymore today.

But I appreciate your taking the time to have given a thoughtful rebuttal.

To jerabaub re 1;02 pm Post
I refer you to my 8:07 PM post. In 1796, George Washington did not and could not forsee the need in 1941 to align ourselves with Great Britain and the Soviet Union to defeat Nazi Germany. You are trying, as does AmericaFirst, to use George Washington to justify an isolationist policy with which I doubt he would agree. henry Kissinger has an excellent chapter in his book "Diplomacy" about George Washington and the passage quoted by AmericaFirst.

Once again, Pat nails it...
How many times does he have to be proven right for the yarmulke-sniffers suffering from BDS (Buchanan Derangement Syndrome) to apologize and go away?
Here's an idea -- in line with the "accuracy" of the missle test photos that got everyone's knickers in a twist last weekend, let's photoshop a snap of a mushroom cloud over Tehran. Since folks like TrueConservative and Louisel can't tell the difference, they should be satisfied.

Go Pat!
Man, another solid anti-war piece from Buchanon!

I really like how this guy thinks.

And as a far-left kind of guy I'm *totally pissed* at how the democrats in congress are treating this saber-rattling.

We need to come to grips that war does our nation no good!

It's not about stopping this war or that war -- WAR itself is OBSOLETE.

Hey AmericaFirst
Let me preface this with, it is in Americas best interest that Iran not get Nukes. The Nukes would end up in terrorist's hands.
With regards to Israel, I used to be a big supporter. However, they have been caught spying on us on numerous occasions and they recently got caught selling "our" Drone technology to China. For this reason I'm inclined to agree with Buchanan on some issues. Israel is not the ally the liberal Jews in this country would have us believe.
We have been at war with Iran ever since they took our Embassy personnel Hostage. They have been killing our troops in Iraq. Their proxy, Hammas has also killed numerous Americans. Read the following:
http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2003/07/the-united-states-a t-war-with-hamas-and.html

So, as far as I'm concerned, we can turn Iran into a glass parking lot by using our proxy, Israel. Let Israel earn our support.

Vietnam showed us the draft is a Very bad idea. We had guys smoking pot in the guard towers that were supposed to be watching for Charlie. We had drug problems, race problems and major crime problems. Our troops today are the best in the world. That is because they are doing what they choose to do.
Just push for higher recruitment rates.

Enemies of America
The real crisis is that enemies of America, like Herr Buchanan, are not run out of any credible media outlet.

Why would Herr Buchanan try to minimize the potential danger of a nuclear Iran ? What percentage risk to America, that such weapons pose, would be acceptable to Herr Buchanan ? A one percent risk that some Terrorist group might end up with some sort of Iranian nuke and blow up an American city is acceptable to Herr Buchanan?
Would Herr Buchanan fly with an airline that crashes one in every hundred takeoffs ?

Why Does Herr Buchanan fail to mention that Iran signed the non proliferation treaty and received nuclear assistance in exchange for agreeing to inspections and non military use.
The fact that Iran won't allow inspections is an admission they are developing weapons, that would be apparent to anyone with common sense.

Finally, Herr Buchanan should know that this whole "energy crisis" is phony. Argentina switched to natural gas for all of its vehicles almost overnight. The US can do the same, especially in light of the fact that North Americal holds the vast majority of the world's natural gas. Any engine can be converted to run on compressed natural gas, (CNG), which costs 1.49 per gallon in Michigan after the 50 cents Federal rebate. It costs 83 cents in Utah. CNG also burns cleaner than gasoline.

Now wanna laugh ? Herr Buchanan knows that Iran has mandated that all vehicles in Iran must run on CNG. Thye know how worthless their gasoline really is. They aren't stupid.
The stupid people are the ones that listen to Herr Buchanan, and get aroused by his cynical, tired Jew hating formula, which values Terrorist gasoline above Jewish and American blood.
Other than that, Herr Buchanan is a fine human being.

Scuds aren't a threat to Israel??
Maybe Unkle Pat can ask the Israelis if the Scuds arent a threat, back in 91, when half of Tel Aviv was on fire from Iraqi Scuds.

so let me get this straight, its not the supply of weapons to terror group Hezbollah, nor the international threats to destroy Israel and its people, nor the heinous human rights abuses of the Tehranian regime, nor the vast buildup of Iranian military and aid to Iraqi shia insurgent groups that kill our soldiers, all that counts for nothing.

its all Israel's fault, that eternal Jewish bogeyman in our midst. Oh how clever and sneaky those jews are.. Thanks Unkle Pat for showing us that notorious 5th column. The Mexicans are taking this week off, Jews are prime time now.

HISTORY SHOULD'VE TAUGHT US
We have history to understand the potential in the middle east. They understand brute force and nothing else. For the defense secretary to ignore the recommendations of the army for an overwhelming force and expect the Iraqis to embrace democracy was ignorant. Had we just told Iraq they would be reduced to rubble if WMD was used, would they believe us? Probably not. So, diplomacy with Iran would just mean concessions on our part. Had we rubbled Iraq, I doubt we would hear a peep from Iran now, much less anyone else. A showdown between muslims and jews in inevitable, and I can see it happening sooner rather than later. With the condition of our military in equipment and numbers, I doubt we would intervene should the rest of the Islamic world unite, unless of course nuclear weapons were used which we wouldn't. I just think with our economy, failing businesses, increasing unemployment, and skyrocketing prices for basic needs, we are not in a position to do anything. We'll find ourselves dick in the dirt soon.

I am not a 'yarmulke sniffer, you puke; but, I don't fall for the hateful spew Buchanan constantly heaps on Israel and Bush, either.

Buchanan needs to go to work for Jimmy Carter and get off of TH.

As for his book, I wouldn't buy it. If it were given to me, I would throw it away. He is looking through a myopic, distorted lens at history and can't relate fact from the fiction in his brain.

An anti semite and an idiot
Buchanan analysis is upside down. The reverse is correct. Iran has a problem with the US. With US presence in ME and control of Arab oil. They want the US out. They dont care about Israel, Palestine, the despise the Arabs. The use Israel and the conflict to attack the US and negate any response from SA and the Golf states - which are scared to death. It is Israel who is doing US dirty work - not very well - I might add. At the end it will be up to us to hold the line or to give up. Get ready for $300 oil and for an unprecedented economic catastrophe. I assume Buchanan is so well off he does not need to worry.

Pat can't resist his 1939 DNA
This is MSM resident "go to" Anti-Semite.

Pat Bucha is sick...
It's nothing to argue with this man.

Pat's not anti-Israeli or anti-semitic?
This article isn't even that bad for the typical Buchanan fodder, such as defending Hitler and morally equivocating how the Allies forced Hitler into war which then resulted in concentration camps etc... No, in comparison this article is tame for the man who appears on neo-nazi radio stations promoting his book.

However, one only do a cursory examination of Pat's past articles to realize the repetitive themed nature of his memes.

Go back to 2005 when Rafik Harriri was assasinated by believed to be Syria and its puppets within Lebanon....
http://dailyscorecard.blogspot.com/2005/05/pat-buchanan-jus t-cant-help-himself.html

Before the blood was even dry Pat was accusing Israel of "baiting a trap" for Bush. The article came out literally the next day - without a shred of evidence either way other only Pat's own conspiratorial bile.

Using Pat's own conspiratorial nature of weak association one could easily conclude he a throwback brownshirt with neo fascist sympathies and/or beliefs... and at the least anti-semitic dressed up - barely these days.

One needn't be any label Pat throws around to silence or minimalize criticism of him... neo-con, zionist, likudnick (Jew just say it Pat), or ""secret Israelis 5th columnist""... to believe Pat is these things... one only read William F. Buckley who painstakingly and copiously built the case.

Reply to BUCK -
The idea that Bush or Cheney were duped or controlled by Paul Wolfowitz or Richard Perle or Scooter Libby is not only moronic it's hilarious. Especially considering how tidy the Bush family and State Dept ex and present are with the Saudis. Especially considering how Libby took the fall for Cheney partially due to his own idiotic way of handling the non investigation investigation of the outing/non-outing of Valerie Plame.

Isn't it funny how when a Paleocon wants to criticize foreign policy such as Buchanan, you never hear direct criticism of Bush or Cheney? No it's always pinpointed at any Jew findable.

Buck, go back to your Buchanan worship Kool Aid drinking studies... next meeting is next week when his next article comes out.

Hey, SteveLoon
If Clinton had kept his zipper closed he would have gotten bin Laden off the world stage BEFORE 9/11. Or, has your idol Buchanan revised that history, too?

Enemies of America
"Enemies of America
The real crisis is that enemies of America, like Herr Buchanan"

You are starting to paint with a mighty broad smear brush when you take the German honorific (Mister) and try to convert it to a pejorative epithet.

You may not be an anti semite, but you do sound like a bigot. I hope that is not the case.

Mike
Buchanan is a third party has-been who never could have been. He makes it obvious that he could not manage the lot attendants at Home Depot, much less run a country.

And, sandrob, given the choice between siding with the Jews or the Muslims, I'll take the Jews any and every time even though I think Olmert is the sorriest Prime Minister Israel has ever had.

By the way, a Chinese spy was picked up in New Orleans last week.

RFYoung
And you get 'bigot' out of that how? Herr Buchanan is a bigot. Martin is not.

Blinded by hate
If there was a person who marched in front of your house daily calling for your death, would not be concerned? Or would you deem the threat not "credible" because someone who really doesn't like you tells you not to worry. If your friend got the same threats would you tell them not to believe them or would you demand your government protect you?

Buchanan, who claims he puts American interests first, ignores a very salient fact: for 30 years, the Iranian regime's two main slogans are "Death to America" and "Death to Israel." They are shouted at every rally.

Well what if they mean what they say and they actually do get the bomb?

As an American Jew, I am proud to support Israel, but my ultimate loyalty is to this nation, America, the duty every other citizen owes as well. There is no conflict of interest in arguing about stopping Iran for me because they have murdered my fellow Americans in Iraq and they have done the same to as many of my fellow Jews as they can. As an American Jew, I come to the inescapable conclusion they want to kill me either way. I know the investment the US has made in a strong Israel and I am proud of the fact that Israel is a steadfast ally of the US. Israel has been immensely helpful to the US in Iraq; Israeli military technology and tactics has saved many American soldiers' lives. Iran, by contrast, has killed many US troops Buchanan feels a war with Iran is unjustified and tells us not to worry about their bomb program.

continued
I am not the one with a conflict of interest, Pat Buchanan is. Buchanan's latest book is an exoneration of Hitler, it is all of the whole cloth of a man who doesn't want you ever do a Google image search for America First and see America Firsters giving the Hitler salute- Pat's family were big America firsters and still are. So while I proudly support Israel as an American Jew, Pat's dark heart advocates letting an avowed American enemy, a terrorist sponsoring regime with a certifiable maniac as president go nuclear- the only way Buchanan's argument puts American interests first is if we have an interest in getting nuked.

If Pat is wrong, the consequences will be catastrophic. Israel will be the least of our problems, not when ten US cities might get hit with suitcase nukes on Khomeini's birthday. If I am wrong, we get a bad war with a terrorist loving fascist regime that has no place in the post 911 world. A war we will likely win quickly with no mushroom clouds. There might well be higher gas prices for a while but America will be safer and stronger.

Buchanan's article is the ultimate unforgivable sin- it is not motivated by love of America but by hatred of the Jewish people. He asks Americans to think our best interests are served by turning a blind eye to the very people who held Americans hostage for 444 days and killed 231 Marines in 1982 and bombed the Khobar Towers killing 19 US servicemen. Occam's Razor teaches us that the simplest answer is usually right. Buchanan wants Iran to get the bomb to finish what Hitler started.

As the old joke goes: you heard Pat Buchanan lost an uncle in WWII? Yes, he broke his neck falling out of the guard tower at the concentration camp.

Pat was on MSNBC and said Lindbergh only gave on speech in support of Hitler, Pat has given a lifetime.

Father Coughlin
Patsy was raised on Father Coughlin's speeches. That is where Patsy gets his talking points

INDEPENDENCE PARTY MEMBER
Modern Democrat Liberals fancy themselves as “Progressives” with or without reference to the I.W.W Wobbles of the 1930’s. The only distinction between a Liberal and a Progressive is that the Liberal prefers to just jump directly off the cliff while the Progressive wants to fly off by Pogo-Stick. This is an apparent example of the current political landscape.
The ever creative Democrats have a broadband allegiance spanning Labor Front Blue Collar working Americans stretched to the intellectual college formulated Anti-War Leftist “Progressives” while the Republicans Party stands naked shone detached from its Conservative mantle. There is an opportunity here to expand identity and possible detach from the stagnant Republican Party hierarchy by forming the “Independence Party.” The manifesto measurement scale of the Independence Party would be determined by the increase or decrease in independence; ergo, would exploring for domestic petroleum based energy products increase or decrease our nation’s independence; or, having the government provide universal health insurance coverage will increase or decrease personal independence and freedom; or, to allow for the public licensing of “Marriage” by two people of the same sex will increase or decrease independence and responsibility as a society; or, would a flat-tax or value-added tax (VAT) scheme be a more “Independence” means to maintain government solvency and operations. By definition if the program or proposition increases independence it should be accepted, if it decreases independence it should fail.

It is all evidence of the Zionist plot!
So…….basically what Pat is saying is that the Islamic Republic of Iran released some poorly photoshopped photos and fake videos which attempted to exaggerate their military capabilities and that this is all just more evidence of the evil Zionist Jewish plot to destroy America (and then the world)? Is there anything that happens that is not a part of the evil Jews’ carefully crafted plan for world domination? We already know that they control the media, the Federal Reserve, both political parties and the international arms and drug trade….. is there anything that is not under control of the evil Jews? Is Iran just another one of their puppets? Was the holocaust all part of their plan to steal Palestine from its rightful inhabitants and create a fake international crisis which would enable them to sell more arms and gain more control over the easily manipulated gentiles???

It is good that Pat is here on Townhall to expose these evil Jews and their nefarious schemes…… or is Pat Buchanan just another one of the Jewish created fake nicks to throw us off the track of their real plan?????

israel is our misfortune...
It's plain and simple. The sooner iran or whomever as I don't care - get israel nuked off the planet - the sooner the American Tax Payer wins.

We don't need aipac forcing our country of 300 million people to defend israel a country of 7 million people. The tail doesn't need to wag the dog here.

Wake up America. We don't need israel because she can take care of herself. Heck - We've GIVEN israel their entire military and they've never even offered a simple thank you to the American Tax Payer.

The iranians are not that stupid to attack israel because they know they would be annihilated in return.

That's why they probably want to defend thimselves because israel is dog unleashed in the me.

The sooner we let israel defend itself, the sooner America will be freed of the zionist cancer in our great country.

Quoting the Father of our Country
It's interesting how many times Pres. Washington's Farewell Address is cited in defense of a Pat Buchanan column. Generously counting, 1330 words of the speech cautioned against foreign entanglements. 1638 words cautioned against regional factionalism.

Does that part ever get quoted at THE AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE? I never see it quoted here...

Rise Up America
The real reason why America cannot act independently is because of treason. Special interests have gained control by getting majorities in both houses of Congress and executive officials to betray their country in order to take power and wealth unjustly from Americans. The judiciary has bowed to this defeatist agenda. America's destiny is to lead the world in virtue. So at some point these fools will get what they deserve.

Buck
I agree in part with your comments on the the neocons, but I reject your contention that they are controlled by "zionists".

I am reading a book entitled "America Alone", by Harper and Clarke, which dissects the impact of the neocons from a traditional conservative perspective. It is good, and worth a read, but you have to be very interested in this topic. Otherwise, you may find it a bit pedantic.

Neocons did not convince Bush to invade Iraq on account of oil. That may have been a minor reason, but the major reason for invasion was to set up a democratic Iraq as a beacon for other Muslim states to emulate, the thinking being democratic states would not be conducive to growth of radical Islamism and would not pose a threat to Israel.

There is no doubt neocons care fervently about the state of Israel. But that is just one of a number of concerns they have. Basically, they want to remake the entire world, especially the Muslim world, in America's image, and they intend to utilize our military in that pursuit.

I disagree with this thesis, or using our military in order to create a new mideast.

Fukuyama has since come to his senses. He has published papers, even written a book, highly critical of the radically utopian, neo-Wilsonian and stupendously arrogant effort to remake the Muslim world in our image.

His book is "America at the Crossroads", and I have not yet read it, but intend to soon.

Phil Byler's 1:45 post.
We will just have to disagree here.

I still find it a bit amusing that those so enamored with the originalist view of the Constitution, that document derived from the the concepts and ideas of our Framers, would so cavalierly dismiss the ideas on foreign policy enunciated by one of the chief Framers, the father of our Beloved Republic.

I never said I was an isolationist.

But nor do I think we should place our fighting men and women in peril unless our national security is threatened.

Islamic Designs on the World
This is not just a matter of caring or not caring whether Islamic nations become the West's version of democratic. It is incumbent on Muslims today - with their radical view of Islam - to make sure that Islam controls the world. This is a different enemy than those there have been in the past. This enemy is living inside of countries. Now, maybe most of them just want to live their lives; but too many of them want to impose their way of life on the host country. This is already starting to happen in England with Shari'a law being considered alongside of English law. Madrassas in Europe and the U.S. are teaching a Wahabbi form of Islam - very radical and dangerous. British Muslims are sending their sons to study in madrassas in Pakistan. They will come back to be soldiers for Allah. I said many years ago that the next invasion will be one of immigration. That is exactly what has beeen happening. And Israel - where I live - is a beacon of light in the midst of darkness. Remember, those that bless Israel will be blessed; and those that don't......

Anti-Semitic Old Loon
Writes that WWII was a mistake, that Hitler wasn't all bad, and now parrots the crazies who claim that Jews are the secret masters. Would someone put this senile windbag out to pasture? He makes conservatives look bad while encouraging the deranged.

Patsy
1) Does the world know that you avoided the Vietnam war by claiming that you had "bad" knees? Well, you can get off your knees now; the war's over. Is that your only qualification for questioning the patriotism of American Jews?

2) The Levys were here before the Buchanans!

3) Jews have fought in every American war including the French and Indian War.

4) America fought on the side of the Soviet Union in World War II. Why? Because that was what was best for America.

5) It is in America's best interest to keep Iran nuclear free. If Israel also benefits, it is coincidental. (It's probably not so coincidental that Saudi Arabia would be better off with a nuclear free Iran). America only does what's best for America. Ask the Serbs who were our allies in both World War I and World War II. As soon as America's interest changed, we bombed them into submission.

6) If AIPAC is as all-powerful as you claim, why are Bush and Rice pressing so hard for a Palestinian State? Why are we selling the highest tech weapons to Saudi Arabia? Why do we give $billions to Egypt? None of these things are good for Israel.

7) Remind me again how many votes you got the last time you ran? Were they so miniscule because of a Jewish conspiracy or was your support confined to the Bund meetings?

8) Do you write your own material or do you just quote "Mein Kampf"??

nazi Interns
Hey Saul #68, were you and Herr Buchanan interns together at Der Sturmer ?

Like your last post, every issue of Der Sturmer began "The Jews are our misfortune". Of course we can all see through the little substitution of "Israel" for "Jews". Is "saul" really Herr Buchanan when he wants to say how he really feels, in a more anonymous fashion ? Ya know the part about nuking Israel ?

Herr Buchanan do I hear a "Seig heil"?
