Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Last week, in one of the great uprisings of modern politics, Middle America rose up and body-slammed the national establishment.

The Bush-Kennedy-McCain amnesty for 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens, and for the businesses that have hired them -- a bill backed by La Raza and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post -- went down to crushing defeat.

Majority Leader Harry Reid fell 15 votes short (45 to 50) of shutting off debate. Like the rout of the Dubai ports deal, the victory was achieved by a firestorm of public protest, reflected in millions of phone calls and e-mails, and citizens marching to town meetings.

The capital's capitulation to the country was unprecedented and astonishing. Not two weeks earlier, the amnesty provision of the bill had been supported by more than 60 senators.

But opponents of this bill, which would reward mass criminality with mass amnesty and eventual U.S. citizenship, ought not rest.

For President Bush is coming back to resuscitate the monster, and this bill has more support in the Senate than the 45 votes it got Thursday. Some Republicans and Democrats who voted not to shut off debate are privately committed to amnesty, if they can be given political cover and face-saving amendments to take home.

Sen. John Kyl is not necessarily wrong when he says, "All we have to do on the Republican side is sit down with those who have amendments, get those amendments in a reasonable package, not too many, but enough so all of the members can say they had their chance."

Kyl reads his party right. For the GOP is the political instrument of K Street and Corporate America -- the folks who fund the party and finance the campaigns. And the No. 1 issue of Corporate America is Bush-Kennedy-McCain. For not only does it give blanket amnesty to businesses for hiring illegals, it legalizes the illegals and ensures Corporate America an endless supply of cheap immigrant labor.

The fundamental reason this bill is not dead is that its authors and backers will never quit. For this legislation is part of a larger agenda of a large slice of America's economic and political elite.

What is that agenda?

They have a vision of a world where not only capital and goods but people move freely across borders. Indeed, borders disappear. It is a vision of a "deep integration" of the United States, Canada and Mexico in a North American Union, modeled on the European Union and tied together by super-highways and railroads, where crossing from Mexico into the United States would be as easy as crossing from Virginia into Maryland. It is about the merger of nations into larger transnational entitles and, ultimately, global governance.

This immigration bill is but a piece of a great global project already far advanced. In 1993, a majority of Americans opposed the NAFTA trade deal with Mexico because they did not believe the propaganda and feared that, as Henry Kissinger said, it represented the architecture of a new world order.

More than a dozen years have elapsed. And the results? Contrary to the promises, our trade surplus with Mexico did not grow. It vanished. In 13 years, we have run $500 billion in trade deficits with Mexico. Last year's $60 billion was the largest ever. Mexico now exports more cars, trucks and auto parts to the United States than we export to the world.

What NAFTA did was enable U.S. companies to close their plants here, fire their American workers, and move their factories and jobs to Mexico, while Mexico continued to export its poor to the United States.

What is the hidden agenda of the global companies, which evolved out of what were once great American companies?

They want a limitless supply of low-wage immigrant labor and an end to penalties for hiring illegals. They want the freedom to shut factories here and move them to nations where wages are low, benefits nonexistent and regulations lax. They want to be able to move products back to the United States free of charge. They want to be rid of their American workers, but keep their American consumers.

They want to be able to go out to Asia and hire bright kids and bring them to the United States to replace middle-age U.S. workers who cost too much. They want to be able to outsource their white-collar jobs to India at a fraction of the wages they pay Americans.

It is about globalism -- and about greed. And, as the Bible says, love of money is the root of all evil. But they have a problem. The nation has begun to awaken to the reality that the vision of the global corporation and the transnational elite cannot be realized without the death of the American republic. And so they are in a fight that is long overdue.

I BELEIVE WE ARE BEING HIT ON ALL SIDES ON PRO IMMIGRATION PEOPLE MAJORITY OF GOV. HIGH PERCENTAGE OF GREEDY BUSINESS ELITES AND PEOPLE WHO JUST PLAIN DON,T LIKE THIS COUNTRY.--THEY ARE TRYING TO GIVE OUR COUNTRY AWAY AS FAST AS THEY CAN NEVER IN THE HISTORY I BELEIVE OF MANKIND HAVE A GOVERNMENT BEEN WILLING TO TURN THEIR COUNTRY AND PEOPLE OVER TO WHOEVER WANTS IT WITHOUT THE SPILLING OF BLOOD.IT,S LIKE SOME KIND OF SINISTER PLOT PLUS TOTAL INSANITY
WE MUST NOT GIVE UP AND BE WILLING TO STAY STRONG TO TURN THIS THING AROUND--I WOULD TRULY LKE TO HAVE MY COUNTRY BACK AND TO BE OF ONE MIND AGAIN --IT,S LATE BUT STILL POSSIBLE.

We must never forget
What George Bush has done well is...hmmm...can't think of any examples at the moment. We must remind him that even if there are 20 million people who have illegally entered the country there are more than that number who are fed up with the globalist nuts who have gotten us into this mess. Never forget the philosophy that our nation is based on. The government can only derive its power from the people. We have a responsibility to restrain the government when the need arises. The time is now.

To Heck With Fred- Run, Pat, Run
Pat Buchanan needs to run for the 2008 GOP nomination. To see him skewer the odious John McCain and Rudy Guiliani at these candidate debates would be a glory to watch. I'd give the Buchanan the maximum to see it happen.

You can see right through this
And all such statments by Senator Kyl

* Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ): “For those who say, 'This bill is amnesty, we shouldn't pass it,' one of my responses is, 'OK, so do you like what we have?'"

Its apparent this man, this so-called "law" maker is telling us in plain english, the Feds have no intention of enforcing the immigration laws.

And unless we citizens just shut up and let them give the country away to the criminal invasion (from Mexico maily)so the K Street owners of America can get it the way they want the country.

Open borders and cheap labor with no such thing as an American Middle Class.

My blood is boiling at the arrogance of these people like Kyl.

Sharpen the guillotine
Somehow this entrenched political elite of both parties must be sacked and replaced en masse.

Fred Thompson
Sam, thanks for exposing Fred. He is just another scumbag globalist (member of CFR) and will sell us out just as fast as Bush.

People, ready to get sucker punched AGAIN?!

Look at the names of the people he is collecting for his campaign. All confirmed globalists.

Kill the bill and let them know we will not vote for any of the top tier candidates. It's like they are under a spell. They really think all these outraged people are going to turn up and vote for them!!! We are going to have to fight for our country until our dying day.

reply to Liberty
I'm not overly concerned with the label. In my view, whatever one's definitional preferences, what "capitalism" designates now is globalization and close ties between companies and governments. Maybe in some ideal world the term SHOULD refer to some sort of "stand-alone" economy, butI say that such an economy never in fact existed anywhere, at any time. "Capitalism" in the sense I think you mean it is as a concept, a creature of pure theory, nothing more.

The "capitalism" of libertarians and many conservatives, the thing celebrated by the followers of Friedman and von Mises (I get my daily does of free market theory form those folks) is an actual description of a theoretical system, not a theoretical description of an actual system, if you see my point.

An ALeGORical Tale
& Parallel Parable for These Perilous Times

Now there hath arisen a new President over the Nation who is abhorrent to the Nation’s heritage, and doth yearn for the People’s grant of regal respect, noble title, and legendary legacy. We The People, bestow that which IS deserved. This Fetid ignores GOD; like unto a King of an olden time who said, “Who is this LORD GOD that I shouldst be mindful of HIM and obey HIS Ten Commandments?” Now This Despot haughtily saith, “only Ten Commandments? When I have imposed tens of hundreds, even tens of thousands! Who, then, is the mightier?”
This Pustule knows neither Samuel or John of the Adams’s, nor Franklin, Hamilton, or Henry; not Jefferson, Jay, or Madison, Hancock, or Paine, and though he reigns in Washington; the namesake city, This Pollutant Reveres not the Nation’s Father, nor any other Founder or Framer. This Oppressor ignores The Holy Bible, and knows not The Magna Charta, nor The Common Sense, or The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, or The Federalist Papers, neither The Constitution of The United States, nor The Bill of Rights, and not any other founding document: except to fold, spindle, and mutilate their meaning to his own ends.
This Infestation is infamous for his cunning and guile, and he is able to fool Some of the people All of the time; these being The Fools, perhaps they shall never know they are the cheerful Slaves of This Overseer, having sold their Blessings of Liberty for a pittance. And he is able to fool Many of the people Most of the time. And he is able to fool Most of the people Some of the time. And he is able to fool a small Portion of the people Little of the time. But he is able to fool a select Few of the people None of the time; these are the Individuals, the Free People, and All people are Free when they are not fooled, which fills with dread This Cheater’s heart.
So This Corruption spake unto his Cabinet, his Faction, his Appointees, his Cronies, his Servants, and The Fools, and unto those playing The Fool. Hence, This Squalid saith, “Lo and Behold! The Free People art numerous and are comforted by their Posterity, their Prosperity, and their Possessions. So let us place Agencies and Bureaus with Tax Collectors and Taskmasters over the Free People. Thus, we mayest complicate and enlarge their labours, and squander their sustenance, so as to sap their strength and lay waste their spirit, reducing them to live upon alms, lest they attain more belongings and increase, therewith to challenge our political Privileges and pillage. We shall say we do it ‘to make a better world for the children,’ and if the Free People doth protest, saying, ‘Set We The People Free,’ those persons shall be vilified. And our Cronies shall accuse them of Extremism, and of Prejudice against Wherever we Want, and our Faction shall inflict them with Plagues of Procedures upon their Property.”
So it came to pass that propaganda flooded The Nation, and The Fools were as a Swarm of devouring Locusts, and the Wail of Fools was heard all over The Nation, for more Laws for Plunder from the Free People, and it came to Pass, these Laws.
Yet, the Free People prospered in The Nation, and brought forth wealth and begat children in abundance. So This Putrid coveted the treasure of the Free People. Thence, This Stench spake again unto his Cabinet, his Faction, his Appointees, his Cronies, his Servants, and The Fools, and unto those behaving Foolishly. Wherefore, This Canker saith, “Verily, we hath passed stringent new Laws to discomfort and molest the Free People, and hath made Unlawful even to Think ill of those I favor. Yet, it is needful to make more and still harsher Laws, and so we shall. But, my Favorites and I shall be above all Laws. So we must disarm the Free People to render them harmless, lest they defend their Life, Liberty, and Property from our pilferage; and imperil our political Prerogatives and pomp. We shall say we do it ‘to make a safer world for the children,’ and if the Free People dare complain; saying, ‘Set We The People Free,’ those people shall be ostracized. And our Servants shall charge them with Intolerance, and of Hatred against Whatever we Wish, and our Appointees shall afflict their Liberty with Punishments of Prosecution.”
So it came to pass that propaganda inundated The Nation, and The Fools were as Vultures upon Carrion, and the Cry of Fools was heard all over The Nation, for more Laws for Plunder from the Free People, and these Laws came to Pass.
Still, the Individuals thrived in The Nation, achieving more assets and were plentiful. And This Scavenger cringed in awe and was vexed by the courage of the Free People. So This Malignancy spake anew unto his Cabinet, his Faction, his Appointees, his Cronies, his Servants, and The Fools, and unto those acting as Fools. Thusly, This Decay saith, “It is Incorrect to Speak against my governance, or to Write fondly of The Nation’s founding, or to Teach of The Nation’s history and heroes, and still these troublesome stiff-necked Free People believe in their myths of an Almighty Divinity and Inalienable Individual Rights! So we shall mock them in their beliefs and forbade the Free People to Praise their LORD GOD, or to Shew HIM reverence. Let us demand they accept our ways, sacrificing merit and morals, and to worship at the altar of our Idols: Celebrity, Diversity, and Perversity, Profanity, and Promiscuity. Shouldst any of the Free People not obey these edicts; else, they doth question our heresies, accuse us of betrayal, reveal my guilt, or lament freedoms lost; they shall be ridiculed without mercy, and their most worthy shall be maliciously menaced. Wouldst they mention virtue, or pronounce truth, or plead justice, or debate issues, we shall all say together; ‘let us moveon,’ or, ‘let us leave this behind us,’ or ‘get over it!’ Our Village shall take their children unto our bosom to nurture and teach them of our ways, to hide their birthright from them; and to cleave their houses, for a house divided shall not stand. We shall say we do it ‘to make a special world for the children,’ and if any of the Free People doth object, saying, ‘Set We The People Free,’ their children shall be held hostage to quell dissent. We must subdue those who censure our actions, so our laws shall work them until they are weary, thence the weary shall have no rest. We shall invoke new measures, where to obey one will violate another; thus, further burdening and confusing their efforts. Lest they endanger our political Power and policies, we must keep the Free People in continual toil to pay us tribute and the debts we hath made for them unto generations. Like unto War, we shall send forth the full weight of our Wrath upon the Free People with reprimands, reprisals, and retribution for the slightest indiscretions and disrespect, so as to destroy their Pursuit of Happiness. And we shall Smite them with: Liens and Audits, and Writs and Subpoena, to increase their Uncertainty. And we shall Torment them with evermore: Lawyers and Arrests, and Warrants and Searches, to cause them Fear our Supremacy; for I am a Vindictive Ruler.”
So it came to pass that propaganda engulfed The Nation, and The Fools were as Swine supping upon Swill, and the Squeal of Fools was heard throughout The Nation, for more laws for Plunder from the Free People, and these Laws came to Pass.
Even so, the Free People did not succumb nor yield, and earned riches and honors, and were exceedingly fruitful and multiplied. So This Ulcer, summoning all of his guile, tried once again to place heavy burdens and bitter bondage upon the Free People. Nay, This Excretion couldst not speak candidly of his intrigues to those whom art being Foolish, for they wilt surely see his exact nature and withdraw their countenance from upon him, nor mayest he speak with candor of his plot unto The Fools for even they mayest see the transgressions of This Hypocrite and his House. Hence, once more didst This Malevolence speak unto his Cabinet, his Faction, his Appointees, his Cronies, and his Servants. In Secret didst This Corrosive saith unto his most fervent petty tyrants, “Hearken, let us speak subtly as The Serpent in The Garden spake, using their own language of freedom and words of independence against the Free People who still dwell amongst us; else, they mayest continue to grow evermore numerous and affluent, hindering our political Prowess and pogroms. We must deal shrewdly with them, telling them once, twice, thrice, and more; it is ‘thine Right to chose‘, or tis ‘a matter of choice,’ or tis ‘a lifestyle option,’ or it is ‘to make a perfect world for the children.’ Whence our lies be believed, we mayest Sway them to readily Slay their First Born Child, and perhaps more from the Womb. So their numbers, and their Votes shall be diminished. They wilt be as mute strangers in their own Nation, and to us they wilt vow and Bow. Forevermore, their lot ought be meager beggary. So shouldst our Pretense be clever and Life be devalued amongst all of the people; we mayest declare the fates of the old, the ill, the infirm, the depressed, the defective, the rich, the poor, the different, the same, the incorrect who oppose us, and many others upon our notion, no cause nor reason need be cited. Yea, Anyone, All of the Free People, lest we mayest have need of these Human Resources for our own purposes. Wouldst any persons speak the truth of our motives, they shall be denounced as liars, or wouldst they dispute our dogma, we shall brand them as partisan. Thence, they and their family shall be intimidated and my Cabinet shall indict them of Zealotry, and of Bigotry against Whomever we Whim. So The Fools shall harass them with many Pestilence of Persecution, and threaten their very Lives, and shouldst anymore be slain, having lived or yet unborn, it matters not, for our schemes art well served by: Falsity and Fallacy, Fear and Fraud, Force and Violence, and even Death. My Servants shall place all blame for all vile words and deeds at the feet of the Free People, and I shall wash my hands of all shed Blood and misdeeds, proclaiming my innocence in the face of all evidence, proof, and Truth. My followers shall forgive my wickedness and defend me in all I do, as will my Fools, whilst seeking my favor, and a paltry portion of purloined political Plunder.”
So it came to pass that propaganda deluged The Nation, and The Fools were as ravening Wolves, and the Howl of Fools was heard all over The Nation, for more Laws for Plunder from the Free People, and these Laws mayest come to Pass.
But the Free People will not submit to coercion, nor believe the lies, nor compromise with evil, nor relinquish their rights. And the Free People raise up their Voices, and as necessary to the security of a free state, wilt lift up their Arms against seizure of chattels, imprisonment, slavery, tyranny, or death of the innocent and vulnerable, and For the Inalienable Rights given by the Almighty LORD GOD to We The People. 2/29/2000.

Baseball doc neve gets it. Just because--a year or so ago--I demonstrated familiarity with Marx, he thinks I'm a Marxist. Please note that in my original post to this column, I did NOT recommend any sort of socialism or communism.

Presumably, if I showed that I knew something about shellfish, baseball doc would conclude that I'm a hermit crab.

As far as substance goes, does baseball doc really believe that the problems of a global economy are caused by a few really nasty dudes at the top of the heap?

"fool-proof identity card."

Be careful about this one. The illegal aliens won't be the only ones required to carry these things. The REAL ID Act is scheduled to go into effect for US, in 2008. A Biometric National ID cards, complete with a national database. Quite a few states have passed legislation saying NO. The amnesty legislation attempts to overrule the states and push it down our throats anyway.

The mechanism exists right now to identify illegal aliens. It has to do with the current counterfeiting of existing forms of identification. Some states use tamper-resistant paper, including watermarks and special ink, to print their birth certificates; some do not. The ones that do not, need to start doing it. Now, to Social Security numbers... Right now, the same number is being used for thousands and thousands of different people. Illegally of course, but it is still being done. It is quite easy to stop this process, as a database of these numbers does exist. All an employer has to do is check to see if the number is a valid one and whether it is being used for numerous people. This ability exists right now.

Also please keep in mind that there is no such thing as "tamper proof". You can go to one of the techie web sites and read about how easily information is stolen from these and how they can be "hacked". Papers have been presented to Congress describing these problems. But, don't worry, Mr. Chipper (Tommy Thompson) is right there to solve that problem for us....... the injectable microchip made by Verichip. This has already been injected into more than a few people. It was voluntary, so that's ok. It will cease to be ok, if it becomes mandatory. I think you see my point. At least I hope you do.

Here's a compendium of clips about injectable microchips from TV coverage:

"The current immigration bill has been wisely opposed by the majority of the American people; but there are not other lessons here with respect to globalism, NAFTA and greed."

Spoken like someone who has not actually read the bill. Bush's Security and Prosperity Partnership is included in this legislation. Hate to tell 'ya.

Pat is right.

Gestell
You're confusing free market capitalism with corporatism. Corporatism is a fusion of business with government; the companies thrive off of government largesse.

Capitalism is good; corporatism is bad.

Let Us Write the Bill
Pat has won me over again. I think he is wrong on a number of issues: "Fortress America" and trade agreements, but his aim is correct on the immigration mess. I can write the bill they should pass:
1. Secure the borders.
2. Inform the illegals that they must come in and register and get on the path to citizenship and learn English or face deportation if they ever violate any law.
3. Warn American companies if they hire illegals after a certain date they will be fined. Any immigrant they hire must show a fool-proof identity card.
4. Increase the number of Mexicans who will be allowed to immigrate to this country as long as they go through the same official process every other immigrant is required to do.
5. Increase the number of temporary Mexican farm workers allowed in the country but ensure we have records on all of them.
6. Appropriate funds to set up privately run schools that will teach English and American culture to Mexicans and other immigrants on the path to citizenship.
7. Shake up and expand the Immigration Service. It's almost as big a failure as the American public school system!

If it's that simple for a senior to come up with such an obvious solution why can't our government create a program that would meet the criticisms of this stinker now rotting in Congress?

Nice write-up
Excellent article, Pat. Once again you manage to hit the mark. Now if only our policy makers could...

If they can build the Hoover Dam
then they can build a 700-mile fence!!! Let the American worker loose and he will prevail!

NO TO THIS IMMIGRATION BILL!!! and YES to ENFORCE the current immigration laws!!!

Thanks, Pat...please keep this one on the front burner...we must not let this bill pass!

Write/Call/Fax your congressional reps!!!!

Perspicacious Pat
Pat Buchanan gets dinged by many who simply do not understand what he tries to say. The world is a complicated place today, folks, and there ARE agendas out there (open border globalists) where the parties do not want you to hear their REAL motives. A case in point-- ILLEGAL aliens. Miscreant, lawbreaking employers much prefer to use those people as quasi-slave labor, BUT WE ALL pay the piper for the "savings" of a relative few owners. Ergo, it ain't in reality cheap labor!

EVERY undereducated, indigent laborer and their progeny will be VERY expensive all-in to society, not only in the govt. services used far exceeding corresponding taxes paid, but in the attendant pandemic social pathologies-- crimes, drugs, gangs, illegitimacies and birth rates, dropouts, health problems, barrio blight, and ethnocentric balkanization, including society-decimating bilingualism and multiculturalism.

The third world lets them do without, but when they get HERE, the left takes from the haves and gives to them... most of you are "the haves." Much of Europe is REELING with regrets for having imported the culturally disparate poor to do their dirty work for them... multiculturalism is a plus only in the pipe dreams of the "elites," who never actually mix among "those people."

The Republican train wreck
Pat,
As always right on target. They could have voted for you but no,the disfunctional Republicans wound up with Bush 1 ,What is the meaning of is,is; and Bush the immigration proponent and Middle East expert, you know the one who said the USA will not get into "Nation Building"

a letter to Senators

Dear Senator Chambliss:

With regard to the pending amnesty legislation, Washington is simply NOT LISTENING to Middle America! Please consider this excerpt from the latest Rasmussen polling:

**********************************************
The enforcement side of the debate is clearly where the public passion lies on the issue.
Seventy-two percent (72%) of voters say it is Very Important for “the government to improve its enforcement of the borders and reduce illegal immigration.” That view is held by 89% of Republicans, 65% of Democrats, and 63% of unaffiliated voters.

Advocates of “comprehensive” reform have taken to arguing that those who want an enforcement-only policy must explain how they would deal with the 12 million illegal aliens already living in the country. The public reaction to that question appears to be “Why?” Only 29% of voters say it is Very Important for “the government to legalize the status of illegal aliens already in the United States.”

**********************************************

Good heavens, even 2/3 of the Democrats think it is VERY IMPORTANT to improve border enforcement and REDUCE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION! Middle America wants enforcement first!

1) Build the already approved fence and give us TRUE enforcement!
2) Enforce visa rules
3) No Scamnesty-- there should be NO connection
between a path to citizenship and having come
here ILLEGALLY-- PERIOD!
4) No welfare for ILLEGALS-- period!
5) End birthright citizenship unless at least one
parent is a U.S. citizen
6) Pass TRUE reform which stresses immigrants who
can benefit America-- the educated and
skilled. We cannot afford to naturalize the
ILLEGAL aliens-- we will ineluctably morph
into a third world welfare state.
7) Make English the OFFICIAL language-- end of story. Bilingualism is a formula for disaster.

Thanks for considering our views... America is watching CAREFULLY what Congress does. Thanks for your service to America.

Top 10 problems with pending Scamnesty:

http://vdare.com/misc/070607_economist.htm

The above is a literate analysis of the GLARING, EGREGIOUS flaws in the pending Scamnesty legislation. The new Rasmussen poll makes it VERY clear that almost 3/4 of us want REAL ENFORCEMENT first and foremost:

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/just_26_favor_senate_immigration_plan

Presidente Jorge and many in Congress have NO INTENTION WHATSOEVER of EVER truly defending our border or enforcing immigration laws internally. We need to VOCIFEROUSLY make clear that this nonfeasance, indeed treason, and violation of his oath of office, is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!

Contact your people in Congress at their OFFICIAL sites right here, folks:

http://www.congressmerge.com/onlinedb/index.htm

DO NOT DELAY!!! Presidente Jorge again thinks he knows what is best for you even when 72% of us disagree with that quisling boob!

Start with your 2 Senators, then contact your personal Congressman and the others in your state. Let freedom ring out! It is time to demand that we save America for Americans before we all become just the educated, taxpaying gringo minority!!

May God bless and PRESERVE America! It would be a terrible thing to lose. It is in dire risk of morphing inexorably into a third world welfare state if we do not stanch the tsunami of undereducated, indigent ILLEGALS flooding in and permeating throughout.

reply to Yooper
You can't really exclude gigantic multi-national corporations from "capitalism" as a type of economic system. And there's no plausible way you can restrict the scope of the concept of "capitalism" to little mom-and-pop businesses owned and operated by patriots.

What can cloud our thinking about capitalism is the undeniable fact that the examples given to make theoretical points in economics textbook discussions of capitalism are always simple. These are all abstractions from the real world, not realistic descriptions of the real world. So the reader is treated to such silliness as "Ronbinson Crusoe economy," consumers with "complete information," and more.

Mainstream economics then tries to build up to useful discussions of the real world from these abstract foundations. Most professional economists think they're doing the same thing as "real" (i.e., physical) science does--and pat themselvs on the back. I'm very skeptical, preferring "political economy," the older field from which conventional economics developed. "Political economy" doesn't have to be leftist. The perspective of political economy is that all so-called "economic" relations and phenomena are necessarily woven into the fabric of a functioning political system, which itself has specific historical characteristics. The conventional economic standpoint assumes it is meanngful to think about what I'll call here a "stand-alone" economy (the familiar "free market.")

In the real world, as capitalist economies develop, one of the things that gets shoved aside is the proverbial mom-and-pop business. This is what the Maarxists call the law of increasing monopolization. Consider: around 1910 or so there were upwards of 50 automobile manufacturers in the US; within a couple of decades that number had dropped dramatically.

I question how successful conventional economics really is--with its simple little models and propositions--as a way of understanding the complex world of multi-nationals, which meshes together business and government. What is clear is that global capitalism is the most powerful economic force so far in human history. Combinations of global financial institutions now routinely tell 3rd world countries which laws and policies they have to alter or eliminate to get development loans, and mult-nationals now often call the shots on the economic policies of those countries. Again, no conspiracies here; just the emergence of...yes, a new world order. As a liberal I'm not convinced that the entire human species will benefit from this, and Pat Buchanan, as a conservative, probably agrees.

Far Fewer Summer Jobs for Teens

Immigrants are taking many jobs that used to go to young adults.

Christian Science Monitor: This summer is shaping up as a tough one for many of America’s youngest job seekers.

Northeastern University’s Center for Labor Market Studies, which Professor Sum heads, predicted in April that just 36.5 percent of teens will have jobs this summer, down from 37.4 percent last year and 45.3 percent in 2000. Those numbers are seasonally adjusted, smoothing out differences between summer and school-year employment, so they are lower than unadjusted summer numbers. What’s significant, and surprising, is the direction of the forecast.

“Extraordinarily weak,” given that it comes after four years of solid economic growth, Sum says.

What a perfect title
"The Regime vs the Nation". I would only add, "the Elites vs the Nation". The political and corporate establishment vs the people. What a slugfest!

At the end of the day, the People hold the real power and we need to continue to exercise it. The Founding Fathers were brilliant! Not even the Supreme Court can help them with this one.

Gestell,

You are equating capitalism with multi-national corporations -- the large corporations that dominate our economy and politics (with their huge donations) are not the same as small firms with local roots whose owners are patriots and who donate to local causes.

The huge money men, Soros and the many dot-com billionaires, are elitists of the first magnitude who HATE the free enterprise system as well as the middle-class who are literate, articulate, and aware.

They too want to dilute your vote by vote fraud, getting the most ignorant on the rolls including as many illegals as they can. Vote fraud convictions only occur after the damage is done on election day.

They want illegal aliens to pour into the country and destroy our stability and our economy. They can seize power in chaos. Soros has stated that he wants our Constitution changed (what chutzpah for a naturalized citizen!).

He has created and funded, along with his rich buddies, dozens of front groups to push his agenda. Read "The Shadow Party" by David Horowitz if you have nerves of steel. Otherwise, you will have trouble sleeping at night.

Post ^ It
You are wrong on regulations being the cause of so many problems for business. Just as La Raza and the US Chamber of Commerce are writing the immigration reform laws, so, too, is Corporate America involved in writing regulations.

Regulations are written by corporations to ELIMINATE competition. Only large corporations with huge infrastuctures can afford to comply with the regulations they write for the government. Small companies cannot compete because they haven't the infrastructure to comply with the regulations written with large corporations in mind.

Neat trick, no? We are now living in a fascistic system -- Corporatism, where corporate and government power are combined against the people.

Gestell
You must be seriously ignorant. Pat Buchanan's rants are from a conservative point of view. His critiques of big buisness are anything but socialistic. The Left loves big buisness as long was they get thier cut. The type of conservativism Buchanan believes in is Main St conservatism. Local is better, smaller is best. Whether it is industry, schools, goverment, Buchanan beliefs mirror two other Catholic thinkers from the 20th Century -Tolkien and Chesterton.

Liberals and Socialists, on the other hand belief in central control, state planning of industry, high taxes on capital and dividends, cradle to grave welfare, oppressive regulations of industry, communities, and familes.

Gestell,
You really need to educate yourself more on these matters.

Applause for Pat
I watch Pat's continuing move to the left with considerable approval. Most of this column could have come from a leftist critic of American capitalism. Pat's quite consistent; it's clear that his views here and his views on the war emanate from the same carefully considered point of view.

What conservatives who agree with Pat need to begin to consider is their generally thoughtless, habitual belief in the unqualified virtues and superiority of capitalism. What Pat's writing about is not the result of some gigantic superconspiracy; it is instead what many of us on the left see as necessary products of a capitalist economy. The policies and practices Pat identifies (and clearly dislikes) are simply what capitalists do. If you buy completely into capitalism, as most conservatives do, this, ladies and gentlemen, is what you get.

The solution, however, is not what a diminishing handful on the left fantasize about--some sort of socialism. There may not be any sort of general solution. Globalization is far too massive a transformation to be affected by most actions governments, including our own, are capable of taking, no matter who or what is running them. Pat would like to go back to some sort of economic nationalism, but, as we say nowadays, that ship has sailed.

oops
You are way past wrong.

Joe Oliva
You appear to be lumping in Dr. Paul with the elites. You are being wrong. I have watched this man for over 20 years and he has never sold us out, or our Constitution. So, if he is a member of the elite, he sure has kept it well-disguised.

I'm sure not sitting around just complaining. I hope you will research this man and get on board to fight like hell to save our country.

"The original American patriots were those individuals brave enough to resist with force the oppressive power of King George. I accept the definition of patriotism as that effort to resist oppressive state power. The true patriot is motivated by a sense of responsibility, and out of self interest -- for himself, his family, and the future of his country -- to resist government abuse of power. R E S T O R E - T H E - C O N S T I T U T I O N

I am to the point of screaming
But instead, I guess I had better get back to the phones. I have been trying to call the White House since early this morning. I phoned last night, and got a message, that I had to call back today. Today the line has been busy for hours. Think the cowards have busied the lines out.

But I have some other calls I can make and see if it will do any good.

I'm all for an indepedent President
The more I see George Bush push this bill the more disgusting this situation seems to get. He will not implement the control portions of the bill. He is making pathetic excuses on why the bill should be approved and now he is actually trying to play the security factor again. Support the bill or you will be less secure. We are less secure because you aren't doing your job!

I'm all for an independent President. A President of the People of America. Rather than the situation we have now which is a President of the two parties and the Washington D.C. elite.

That would be stunning.

Warrior, Baseball Doc, Cliff,
It is not true that we have the choice of the lesser of two evils, and Warrior, if you really want to rock the politicians, there is a simple answer. TAKE AWAY FROM THE ELITES THE THING THEY WANT THE MOST, THE PRESIDENCY!!

You have to take one minute to imagine this scenario: The world wakes up the day after the US Presidential election, and guess what? The new President isn't A Republican OR a Democrat!! It's not Hillary or Giuliani, people they know who are part of the entire political structure! Just think about it! What are the conversations in congress, the Supreme Court, in Russia, China, the EU sounding like? Relish the horrors at the UN, in the Arab world, and among the terrorists. Picture Mexico and Venezuela scrambling to figure out what to do now.

Listen folks, we can do this, we can stop the elites cold, we can shake up the entire world, we can reclaim our birthright!! We can stand up proudly and let the world know without any doubt that the true owners of this great nation have come home and taken back their inheritance! We can loudly proclaim that we are no longer available for sale, that we are not going to sit around while the internationalists and elites sell out this country for a New World Order of socialism and one world government.

We can tell them all that we are now restoring the Constitution, rule of law, and will of the people as the principles by which Americans will govern themselves as a free people! Why not? What are we waiting for? What do we have to be afraid of losng? They have already stolen our inheritance! Why not reclaim it forcefully?

I read all your posts on this TH site. Everyone is complaining about being sold out and ignored. Some are still trying to get an answer from their congressman. A few even believe in the Republican party as a saviour if only they would nominate Ron Paul or Duncan Hunter or the newest darling of the elites, Fred Thompson! What is going on here!

Instead of complaining, here is a solution! Let's not elect another elite from either party, as I described above! If you have a better idea, I am open to hearing about it and discussing it! In all the posts however, everyone is angry, but no one wants to do anything serious about it. Complain, complain, complain!

I challenge all of you to get to my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG. On it I explain how we have been lied to so as to ensure the elites maintain power. I expose the myth that only these people are capable of rule, a myth perpetuated by the MSM and the political machines of both parties. If we don't get it in this upcoming election and we elect another Dem/GOP to the Presidency, then we can kiss our inheritance goodbye. It will be more big government, less personal freedom, and much greater influence to the internationalist cabal that hates America and wants to bring her "into line with the rest of the world".

You don't thinks so? Then you tell me how else we can stop these same individuals who we have elected again and again from implementing their agenda to do those very things! Tell me, are we going to fight back, or roll over one more time, trusting these people? This is the election and now is our opportunity! Anything less than a total overthrow of the political elites is not worth doing! The only way to begin that revolution that Jefferson spoke of, the continuing revolution at the ballot box, is to do it this time. My email is on the website. Go there and explain how else to do it other than as I said, take away the Presidency! Then we can begin our restoration. Thanks, Joe

Exactly
Exactly. Bush has no intention of enforcing any immigration laws. The whole bill is a sham.

Bush
Was just on Fox news. He said that it would be harder to enforce the border laws unless this bill is passed.

What in the world would make it easier to enforce the law if this bill is passed? He is basically saying he will not try to enforce the law unless this bill is passed.

Of course we know he will do nothing anyway.

Amnesty
What happens after they get amnesty and eventual citizenship? They will demand and be entitled to a living wage and benefits--same as other Americans. And we'll be right back where we started.

Excellent article
Excellent article Mr Buchanan.

The betrayal of this country by George Bush and many Members of the Senate is appalling.

And you say, quote: 'They want to be rid of their American workers, but keep their American consumers'. Of course to remain a consumer without a decent job means growing personal debt. Which is precisely what we are seeing. Americans becoming slaves to debt.

Nilsson,

Impeach
George W. Bush is truly a wicked man. He should be impeached.

Globalism & Human Rights
Human Rights
Whenever anyone espouses the virtues of Human Rights I find it necessary to explain their fallacy. Human [group] Rights do not exist, only individuals possess Rights. "We hold these truths to be self [One-self]-evident, that all men [as Individuals] are created equal, that they [as Individuals] are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable [unassailable][untransferable] [unalterable] [unquestionable]rights, that among these are life [cognizance], liberty [freedom and choice of action and opinion], and the pursuit [not guarantee] of happiness [outcome]. That, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." Human Rights guarantee you nothing except that the government or entity which makes the rules, regulations, and laws will account for your existence when measuring your contributions to society as a Human Resource. Why do you think Personnel departments was changed to Human Resouce in business and government? It is a signal a code that the Humanist believe they are winning the war for control of civilization. You will be classified as inventory for the purposes of your utility to society and when that utility has been deemed complete your value will be depreciated and you will be pre- or re-classified as a net burden upon society. Each [as unit, part, cog] according to his [impersonal pronoun] ability, Each [as unit, part, cog] according to his [impersonal pronoun] need. They will only need you as long as they need you to burden [control] my actions and choices. Co-incidentally, that is longer tham I need you, which is why you epouse Human Rights. You can not do without me either as an object to control, or to feed, shelter, and clothe you. Possible solutions to this lack of utility will be abortion, slavery, termination, or euthanasia.

Tony Snow Job
Savage named him correctly. I used to enjoy his radio show prior to his caving. I voted for GWB 2X, and now agree, he should be impeached.

Uphill battle for the Amnesty crowd
The President's political capital reserve is somewhere between Duke Cunningham and William Jefferson's. I'm not sure what he's up to, but it's unlikely that they're going to pass an amnesty bill. He can't get re-elected and all of those Senators can.

After the trips to the woodshed that Americans gave them over the past two weeks, it would be political suicide for them to pass any form of amnesty. There's no amount of corporate PAC money that will get Graham, Martinez and Kyl re-elected if they get an amnesty bill through.

This is an issue where Americans won't get amnesia over come the next election and they know it. It's going to be interesting watching them at work over the coming weeks. Let the games begin!

There is still hope
I have been on the phone a good bit this morning.

I have tried for over three hours to get through to the white house, and the line is busy. Either they have busied out the lines, or the line is just staying busy. Either way it is because of the outrage of the base calling them.

Liberty I'm trying. I'm with you. Can you think of anything else I can do.?

PatriotRage
Ah c'mon man, don't give up so easily. This is still OUR country and it's about high time we all remembered that.

"When people fear the government, there is tyranny; when government fears the people, there is liberty." -- Benjamin Franklin

Baseballdoc is right
Had James K. Polk a bit more backbone, this problem would never have existed.

WE'RE DONE
Amnesty...It's not just a question of "if" anymore.

It's just a question of "when" and "how".

Battle for America

.....This Amnesty Bill will determine if the Republic founded by Jefferson and Madison will endure or if we will become just another member state in a World Government run out of The Hague ....

.....If we had just conquered and annexed both Canada and Mexico back in the days when Manifest Destiny was the driving force behind our quest for land and empire ...then we could have avoided all this turmoil .....COLOSSUS

Cliff
"The people rejected Pat and Keyes and Ollie..."

They also rejected Gore and Kerry and Nader. What's your point?

GWB has destroyed
the republican party. And if given enough time will destroy what is left of our country. How anyone can believe that this bill is good for America is simply beyond me. But those idiots will continue to bring it up until they get something through. Tony Snows tripe about we will enforce the law this time even though we haven't been for the last 21 years is absurd. We can not afford to trust our "friends in Washington" any longer. But as Curly said, "Don't mind me, I'm just the plunber."

Bush May Well Unite Libs & Conservatives
It seems like more and more folks on both sides of the aisle want him impeached.

Different reasons, maybe, but it's the first thing we've agreed on in a long time.

Cliff
“The problem isn't them ... it is you and I.”

So I see, it is my fault that 20 million foreigners broke into our country. Oh, stupid me. All this time, I was blaming the wrong people. Thank you for the eye-opener.

Nilsson
You know what.... instead of criticizing Pat for being "MIA" for awhile, how about instead being darn glad he's here NOW, and been here for a long darn while trying to alert us to what is going on.

So how about we work together and stop this blankety-blank amnesty plan and start getting our country back from all these one-worlder globalists who are doing everything in their power to destroy this country?

Who is with me?!!!!!!!!!!!

NO AMNESTY! CLOSE THE BORDER!
NOW

pat buchanan's one note samba
While I agree with Mr. Buchanan on the disaster that is the pending immigration bill; he fixates entirely on the republicans who support the bill and leaves the democrats alone. While I know he has an a real animosity toward his former party and has more and more slept with the democrats; he should try some balance. The reason the bill failed last year and again so far this year is because the majority of REPUBLICANS in the House or Senate killed it and it is the republican party that will continue to if the bill is to die a permanent death not the democrats who are for even a more lenient policy.

Scott in Pa
Perhaps you are correct in the distinction between the movement of capital and that of labor across borders.

A company setting up facilities in a low cost nation probably improves the conditions of workers, since without the facilities the workers have absolutely nothing, except bleak, crushing poverty. At least the company facility gives them the opportunity to hone a skill, be employed, become self sufficient and less likely to emigrate here in search of work.

Critics claim companies "exploit" these workers. Maybe. But without the company, they have absolutely no opportunity for advancement. They have nothing.

Pat wrote a good article. However, we should radically alter the mix of immigrants: we should promote immigrants who have scientific backgrounds, educational qualifications, or otherwise possess skilled trades. Our current policy encourages the importation of ignorance, illiteracy onto our shores, dumbing down our nation. These immigrants should be excluded, as much as possible.

own economic immiseration
Baloney, America can, and should, be self-sufficient. All it would require is to do away with a lot of stupid liberal laws and regulations.

We don't need any outside help. Build refineries, drill oil-wells, grow food for America. Remember, if you tax it you get less of it, if you subsidize it you'll get more.

Is this a consequence of regulation?
Obviously, yadda yadda greedy business, traitor politicians...

But, getting past that, how much of this is the direct result of raising the minimum wage and forcing extra costs onto businesses? Businesses seek the cheapest method of production like water seeks the lowest level; that's what they do.

I'm not a money-genius, but, would it be safe to chalk some of this up to yet another bad side-effect of the Leftish government?

Pat is only half right
Pat says: “They have a vision of a world where not only capital and goods but people move freely across borders.”

Pat is right to object to “people” moving freely across borders, but wrong to object to the free movement of “capital and goods”.

If a business has difficulty finding 200 low-skilled workers to start up an enterprise, would it be better to import 200 low-skilled, low IQ third-world types to America, or would it be better to go off-shore and start the business in an under-developed country? Far better to go off-shore as this option preserves the integrity of our nation, culture, prosperity, and national security.

Don’t falsely tie together capital and people. They are two different things. If we disallow the free movement of BOTH then we will surely bring about our own economic immiseration.

Plain and Simple
The nation would be refreshed and happy if we were to hear this bill contain No amnesty and No benefits.

Cut them off.

If our ancestors were able to make it here legally with no handouts and flourished regardless, then let's get back to basics--cut these illegals off from every benefit.

They need to come here legally, they need to work, get their own health insurance, learn English and pay taxes. If they chose to live in America, they need to do things the right way to be an American.

Cut off the freebies, and you'll see 80% of them leave---the ones who would stay only would have the best intentions coming here.

Amnesty IS Surrender

Any amnesty is surrender, not only to the demands of citizens of other countries illegally in our country, but also to those who have been encouraging them to break our laws. Corporations have been paying off our politicians to subvert enforcement of existing laws since they were passed in 1986. We won't be bamboozled again. The jig is up. We know this is not about immigration, it is about importing cheap labor. KILL THIS BILL NOW. ENFORCE THE LAW NOW. SECURE THE BORDER NOW. Maybe after 20 years of action, to make up for the 20 years of inaction we've had, we can talk about immigration reform.

No Lessons From Bad Bill As To Globalism
One unfortunate aspect of what is a very badly conceived Senate immigration bill is that it gives Pat Buchanan the opportunity to rant about a number of other subjects as he does here. The current immigration bill has been wisely opposed by the majority of the American people; but there are not other lessons here with respect to globalism, NAFTA and greed.

Leadership
All the leaders are on the wrong side and they control the press and its propaganda machine. Bush, Kennedy, McCain and the MSM is a formidable alliance to beat Joe 6 pack and his pro American buddies who are essentially voiceless. We can place calls and write e-mails in between working for a living while the Rodents of the Republic gnaw away at our sovereignty on a 24 hour a day shift. Rodents always do their most damage while the workers and builders of this great nation are nestled in their pillows resting from a hard days work. Deals will be struck, spin will be rationalized, and the American citizen will awaken to a Mexican breakfast of 2 helping of over easy citizenship, with 3 strips of brazen amnesty . We need leadership and we need a voice--we need to rock Washington like it has never been rocked. Every Senator that votes to destroy our sovereignty must be treated as a leper. We need to make a solemn promise to work (all of us, regardless of state) to unseat the traitors and drive them back into their respective States in utter shame. They are not American; they have warmed their hands at the fire of greed and profit, and for that we must extract our pound of flesh.

Agree
It has to stop! Sellouts will be voted out! Grandmaster Ro

NO, WE'RE NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET
Our representatives -rulers- are going to put as much lipstick on this pig and if necessary, Versace dress to ram this one through.
Mr. Buchanan nails it in his article.
This is all about globalism and greed. It's about creating the true proleteriat that Karl Marx envisoned. More like a serfdom with us chained to huge global conglomerates instead of the old company store.
We have to keep a watchful, vigilant eye not only on foriegn enemies, but domestic ones as well.

Bush
GWB is the only president in my lifetime who has managed to anger the entire country. He dissed the libs by standing up to the Taliban and angered the conservatives with this crazy amnesty bill. Good work. This North American Union scheme he and his Wall Street buddies dreamed up will become a nightmare if it ever comes to pass. I am John Doe.

Yes greed and
business getting its' new slave labor is what this is all about. The pols do not care one iota about we, the people.

If Bush wants to ram this through, he and his allies in Congress will face another body slam. We are not going to roll over and take this.

Keep faxing your reps. Keep the pressure on. We defeated this once, we can do it again.

http://peppermintsplace.townhall.com
I have an article about this and our pols called "Americans Kill Bill". Come on over and let me know what you think of our pols.

I despise Bush
How can he even show his face when he is working to destroy our nation.

How can he can to say to any American worker (as if he ever worked a day in his life), that WE do not want what is good for America?

All the liberal stickers are true. (A lot of them in my city)

Bush lied (over and over again)
What happened to my country?
A village in Texas is missing it's idiot
What happened to the constitution?

Not for the reasons they think, but they are true!

at last
Well it is depressing, but at least someone finally addresssed the root problem.

The problem is that the real power in this country, the big money that owns politicians wants the NAU and eventually one world government. They do not care about anything except the ability to make as much money as possible. As Barry Goldwater has said in his writings. They do not have any ideology. It is just commerce. They want to kill our country and the middle class, because there is too much money in the middle class. They openly state the standard of living must go down in America. That would be about as low down as Mexico. (Remember Lindsey Graham saying we had to have cheap labor in order to be able to compete?)

Way to
come back strong Pat.

Something that a lot of Americans don't seem to grasp is that the alien invasion into this country has global money connections that look like a spiderweb squeezing and mining the earths riches.

"Foreign influence is truly the Grecian horse to a republic. We cannot be too careful to exclude its influence." -Alexander Hamilton, 1793

Money has no motherland; financiers are without patriotism and without decency; their sole object is gain - Napoleon Bonaparte, 1815

LD - Are You Still Deployed?
LD,

Are you home yet? If not, keep well. Actually, keep well even if you are back home.

Illegals are great to have around.....
What do I care if some auto worker has to hit the unemployment line? I want my hedges trimmed by the lowest bidder I can find, and I'll be danged if I'll scrub my commode so long as someone else is willing to do it cheap. I get no benefit out of the labor put forth by the auto worker, whereas I can enjoy another hour of ESPN while some enchilada is busy clipping the bermuda at a bargain rate.

Let the illegals move in. Only a xenophobic racist would keep them out. Illegals are free to move into my neighborhood if they wish, provided they pony up the $800 grand it takes to buy a house on my street. I am willing to let them live in my neighborhood, I am willing to let them clean my gutters, and I am willing to let them replace my $25 per hour American workers, thereby allowing me to undercut competitors that insist on doing things legally.

I am a wonderful person; how do you bigots live with yourselves?
