Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In the end, it was not about Imus. It was about us.

Are we really a better country because, after he was publicly whipped for 10 days as the worst kind of racist, with whom no decent person could associate, he was thrown off the air?

Cards on the table.

This writer works for MSNBC, has been on the Imus show scores of times, watches Imus every morning, and likes the show, the music and the guys: the I-Man, Bernie, Charles and Tom Bowman.

And Imus is among the best interviewers in our business. Not only does he read and follow the news closely, he listens and probes as well as any interviewer in America. Because he is a comic, people mistake how good a questioner he is.

Is "Imus in the Morning" outrageous? Over the top at times? Are things said every week, if not every day, where you say, "He's going too far"? Yeah. But outrageousness is part of the show, whether the skits are of "Teddy Kennedy," "Reverend Falwell," "Mayor Nagin" or "The Cardinal."

And when Imus called the Rutgers women's basketball team "tattooed ... nappy-headed ho's," he went over the top. The women deserved an apology. There was no cause, no call to use those terms. As Ann Coulter said, they were not fair game.

But Imus did apologize, again and again and again.

And lest we forget, these are athletes in their prime, the same age as young women in Iraq. They are not 5-year-old girls, and they are capable of brushing off an ignorant comment by a talk-show host who does not know them, or anything about them.

Who, after all, believed the slur was true? No one.

Compare, if you will, what was done to them -- a single nasty insult -- to the savage slanders for weeks on end of the Duke lacrosse team and the three players accused by a lying stripper of having gang-raped her at a frat party.

Duke faculty and talking heads took that occasion to vent their venom toward all white "jocks" on college campuses. Where are the demands for apologies from the talk-show hosts, guests, Duke faculty members and smear artists, all of whom bought into the lies about those Duke kids -- because the lies comported with their hateful view of America?

And hate is what this is all about.

While the remarks of Imus and Bernie about the Rutgers women were indefensible, they were more unthinking and stupid than vicious and malicious. But malice is the right word to describe the howls for their show to be canceled and them to be driven from the airwaves -- by phonies who endlessly prattle about the First Amendment.

The hypocrisy here was too thick to cut with a chainsaw.

What was the term the I-Man used? It was "ho's," slang for whores, a term employed ad infinitum et ad nauseam by rap and hip-hop "artists." It is a term out of the African-American community. Yet, if any of a hundred rap singers has lost his contract or been driven from the airwaves for using it, maybe someone can tell me about it.

If the word "ho's" is a filthy insult to decent black women, and it is, why are hip-hop artists and rap singers who use it incessantly not pariahs in the black community? Why would black politicians hobnob with them? Why are there no boycotts of the advertisers of the radio stations that play their degrading music?

Answer: The issue here is not the word Imus used. The issue is who Imus is -- a white man, who used a term about black women only black folks are permitted to use with impunity and immunity.

Whatever Imus' sins, no one deserves to have Al Sharpton -- hero of the Tawana Brawley hoax, resolute defender of the fake rape charge against half a dozen innocent guys, which ruined lives -- sit in moral judgment upon them.

"It is our feeling that this is only the beginning. We must have a broad discussion on what is permitted and not permitted in terms of the airwaves," says Sharpton. It says something about America that someone with Al's track record can claim the role of national censor.

Who is next? And why do we take it?

I did a bad thing, but I am not a bad person, says Imus. Indeed, whoever used his microphone to do more good for more people -- be they the cancer kids of Imus Ranch, the families of Iraq war dead now more justly compensated because of the I-Man or the cause of a cure for autism?

"We know of no spectacle so ridiculous as the British public in one of its periodic fits of morality," said Lord Macaulay. Unfortunately, Macauley never saw the likes of the Revs. Sharpton and Jackson.

Imus threw himself on the mercy of the court of elite opinion -- and that court, pandering to the mob, lynched him. Yet, for all his sins, he was a better man than the lot of them rejoicing at the foot of the cottonwood tree.

Support for Imus is everywhere
To all the Jack doodles:
Hey, if you don't like him, don't listen.
Those girls really didn't deserve to be made fun of, no one really does, its just dumb, but that’s what we do in this country and we are all a party to it in one way or the other.

He didn't make those comments to those girls. They don't listen to his show, probably didn’t know who he was. No one was going to take it literally and bother them about it the next day, except maybe just to tell them some old coot was being a loser, at which point, being respectful and proud human beings, they could just get on with their lives.

But you can't get on with your life if its become a media spectacle being blared all over the place. And they became a party to something unfair, opportunistic censorship. We might all want to do this, but it isn't right. And its a waste of time when its just some curmudgeon exploiting one group of so many people to be genuinely funny. In my generation, it doesn't matter what group, its all fair game to them; South Park, Mind of Mencia, Chapelle...it isn't fair for one group to have immunity.

I would think would be the last place I'd ever sign up to, a conservative site called TownHall (or anything that references "Town Hall" for anything other than a videogame), I tend to lean "left" on most things.
But I'm looking for closure on the current void in the airwaves, and can't find it anywhere, my own soul's void ever widening.
I do respect Pat Buchanan and his opinions, especially on McL Group, though I mostly disagree with him.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DonImusFans/
this is a yahoo group that is currently my focal point for action in the name of this issue and of Imus. It was started in the wake of Imus' s termination and has good links to other fan sites that have been around.

He was someone I listened to everyday. Me a leftist-damn-near-hippee violent-video-game-playing NYC-born-and-raised colored-minority college student.(been listening since high school)
Al Sharpton doesn't represent me.

Imus Lynching
Pat,

I really appreciated your view and the Imus show is totally and sadly missed. I can't believe this has happened through over-reaction to a stupid statement.
The Rutgers Ladies Team certainly never asked Sharpton & Co for the turmoil he created which only made life worse for the team when he enterprised on a stupid remark. The voice of reason was Vivian Stringer and the Team. They the aggreived party and they were the ones who should have spoken out and speak they did. Eloquence and class was what they exuded. Ladies, you are the heros not the victims. You showed us all what class is all about.
This is certainly the big opportunity for Sharpton & Co to clean up the world and end the black on black crime of rap music but I don't see it coming.

Say Baaaby!
Shall we all sing together!
I don't care if it rains or freezes,
Al Sharpton just ain't Jesus,
bellowing from speaker of my car!
I have gone a hundred miles an hour,
running from his racist power,
spraying spittle on my pair of fuzzy dice!

Say Halleluiah!
Say Aaa-Men!

Harmony
I am not trying to defend Sharpton's or Jackson's reactions to Imus. They do what they do. I personally think they were right about Imus. But, believe it or not, most Americans of African descent do not sit around waiting to get our opinions from Sharpton and Jackson. We can think for ourselves. I am just saying don't blame them for business decisions that MSNBC & CBS make.

Webster defines "capitalism" as "an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods and by prices, production and distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market."

I focused in on "competition" in the definition. MSNBC & CBS felt keeping Imus on the air would hurt rather than help them "compete" with other entities for the advertising dollars out there. That's why they made the decision to fire Imus. If they thought he could still make money for them, Imus would still be on the air, no matter what Sharpton and Jackson said or did. As the saying goes, "Money talks and BS runs a marathon." Free enterprise is a beautiful thing. Good riddance I-Man!!

What are the facts?
Nobody cares what Imus says, including the girls. Almost nobody engages in or promotes Imus language. All appreciate the advertisers protecting themselves from a Jesse/Al onslaught. All recoil from Al & Jesse showing up. Yet most defend Al & Jesse’s right to be race hustling poverty pimps. Most don’t resent the public being made aware of the comment, even though they resent it done by the two most despicable liberal characters of our time.

Some talk about contradictions, such as the conservatives upset about the Dixie Chicks’ free speech. Almost nobody cares what the Dixie Chicks say and didn’t mind them doing it in the US. Conservatives do get outraged when troops are being killed, (even though most true conservatives, almost none being Repubs, would argue against being there to begin with), and people travel the world doing a Jane Fonda. Imus wasn’t traveling the world bad mouthing Blacks or his country.

Some say it is the same as the Duke case. Well it does have some similarity in that Jesse did run to Duke and condemn White racist and rescue the girl and pay for her college education.

The liberal cry is free speech, and they have been ardent supporters of their right to put the most offensive stuff in the media. They would normally be defending Imus. A prime example is left wing syndicated columnist Ted Rall calling Condi Rice a house nxxxger and his cartoon, “Bush’s house nigg[x]”. That made Imus look like a piker. Liberals found no need for some giver-ment controls of media decency for Ted, that herein some are demanding for Imus. The reason the Constitution doesn’t have a behavior clause is because it isn’t Nanny's job to regulate the population's PC behavior.

In short, if a Black of integrity had brought forth the complaint, I suspect there would be little posting on this topic. Even liberals would leave it alone because their two icons would not be involved.

jack doodle
"Don Imus is an idiot. That's what Don Imus is. This isn't about free speech or about a double standard. It is about MSNBC, CBS and their sponsors choosing not to be associated with someone who they deem to no longer be profitable."

Actually he was making a profit for them in spite of what the lamestream media would have us believe. I was amused when I heard that GM had pulled out; I used to buy GM cars until I started having too much trouble with them. I have a news flash for GM: build a car that is both reliable and affordable (and do something about that abominable ignition/starter switch) and it will SELL. Even if they sponsor David Duke on KKKTV. The sponsors are the biggest "ho's."

I saw streamers at the bottom of the TV screen last night claiming that Sharpton had received death threats. Well if anyone believes that then I have a bridge for sale but you will have to pick it up on site because I don't deliver.

follow up
I posted the same questions as above on Michelle Malkin's article and I intend to do the same on every article written about Imus. I'm not going to change one word, and I guarantee it will be just as relevant on each page because one article about Imus (and the responses that ensue) will be indistinguishable from all others. And you folks accuse liberals of being guilty of group think.

a few questions
Would it be appropriate to refer to the women's soccer team who won the world cup a few years back as hos? Would it be appropriate for me to yell at them to 'SHOW ME YOUR T*TS'? If not, why not? After all, white girls on the 'Girls Gone Wild' Series routinely flash themselves in public. If one or a few white girls act like trash, shouldn't I treat all white girls like trash?

This whole 'hip hop culture perpetuates this' defense is the biggest red hering ever. Besides, hip hop began to grow in popularity during the 80's. Who do you blame for the inappropriate comments Don Imus made during the 70's? Parliament-Funkadelic?

Does it make sense to indict an entire race of people (whether subtly or overtly) based on one facet (a facet whose popularity is declining, by the way) of their culture? Should the entire White race be defined by South Park, Ann Coulter and Larry the Cable Guy?

Don Imus is an idiot. That's what Don Imus is. This isn't about free speech or about a double standard. It is about MSNBC, CBS and their sponsors choosing not to be associated with someone who they deem to no longer be profitable.

Contrary to popular belief, it isn't so much about race either. If Imus had said what he said about Li'l Kim or Foxy Brown nobody would have given a rat's rear end, because hos (nappy headed or otherwise) is exactly what they are.

Calling the Rutger's ladies hos based on the images of people like Foxy Brown and Li'l Kim makes about as much sense as calling the former ladies world cup champions hos based on the images of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

Dennis
Correction: "hypocritical"

Also, can you name an instance when Sharpton or Jackson spoke out against a crime committed by a black person towards a white person?

Says a lot, don't you think?

Race rules. More divisiveness results.

Dennis
You blame capitalism for Imus's firing?

Despite attempts by CBS to claim he was fired for his most recent "nappy-headed" and "ho" comments, we do have to wonder why they gave him a pass all these years. Since I don't watch the program, I base this on Dick Morris's recent itemization of Don's past remarks.

Did CBS suddenly grow a conscience? Or was their decision based on loss of sponsors, $$$$?

Every one in the world is dependent on some kind of income. People don't work for charity to support themselves. In the U.S., for one, most of us survive on our own efforts to earn. No one else is morally entitled to our money.

That is capitalism.

Imus lost his job because of some who have done far worse damage. They are self-appointed "hypocritacal judges" in any situation where a white citizen is, or is suspected of that big, bad word RACISM.

The Reverends...Sharpton and Jackson

Capitalism fired Imus
Does anyone really think that MSNBC or CBS would fire Don Imus if they thought that he could still make money for them? Of course not! The sponsors were pulling out. They looked at the long-term benefit of keeping Imus and decided it was not worth it. If he still could make money for them, the two-week suspension would have remained in place. He would be back on the air and all would be as it was.

Conservatives are not upset about Imus being fired, or why he was fired. Conservatives are upset that Sharpton and Jackson are involved, and it appears that they "won". This is why there is all of this talk about rappers doing the same thing as Imus. As if stupidity condones other stupidity. I am an African-American with a mother, 6 sisters, a wife, a daughter, 10 neices, aunts, females friends, and co-workers. I don't use the word "ho." None of my circle of friends uses the word. So, it is not part of the black community that I know. Do you really think Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent live in the "black" community, anymore? Or, that they know anything about anything? They are capitalist and their record-buying audience is mainly young white kids.

C. Dolores Tucker protested this kind of rap music, as well as, the students at Spelman College, and others. So, the black community does not condone this kind of vile language by Imus, rappers, or anyone else. So, don't be mad at the Rutgers women because you hate Sharpton and Jackson. The Rutgers women accepted Imus's apology. They are mature and classy young women. Be mad at free enterprise.

Who are the Racist
Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are at the top of the ladder. Sadly they have a lot of blacks and some "whities" who seem to like what they do. It is time we White Americans start speaking out for "our people" like the blacks do for "their people". It is sad that we allow the Attorney General of North Carolina to prosecute a District Attorney for doing his job and protecting Durham, N.C. from being destroyed by the likes of Jackson and Sharpton and their followers yet let the black accuser who started all the trouble for the Duke gentlemen go scott free. Can you call this justice? Imus is just another case of the racist against whites.

out of proportion
This has been blown out of proportion. What Imus said was outrageous, but I doubt these were the first offensive, outrageous words ever to escape his lips. If he has "scarred" any of the Rutgers girls for life, that does not speak highly of their character. I am a teacher in a one high-school town. Now and then people will write to the newspaper to decry the state of education and to attack teachers in general. Because I know who I am and what I do, and these people do not, I refuse to take offense or to take the slams personally.

One can only hope that this case and the Duke case can open up some serious discussion about racism in this country--both black against white and white against black. My greatest hope is that it will shine even more light on the total hypocricy of Jackson and Sharpton--two of the biggest racist in the US today.

For the poster that said that conservative women equate men with evil--what?!? My heart goes out to the young Duke players whose lives have been so adversely affected by a false accusation. Most conservative women have fathers, husbands, and/or sons, so why on earth would we consider men to be evil? Obviously you have conservative women and rabid feminists confused.

I Absolutely Refuse
To voluntarily give up my God given right to call you a stump jumping swamp yankee online or anywhere else.

I Hope I Didn't Hurt The Feelings
Of any mayonnaise mulletheads in the group. Really, I'm just kidding around!

Fight Moonbat Censorship
I for one, don't want to stop calling my white-y neighbors redneck ditchpigs or goldentoe gringos. After all, I am just joking when I say that.

Harry
...and all. Go to hotair.com and see the stunning video of Jason Whitlock, and go through every link in the article. This black man is amazing in his condemnation of the two self-appointed "activists" and puts the whole incident into perspective.

If you scroll down to the comments under the video, you'll find his email address (it's jwhitlock at kcstar.com) if you want to write and thank him for his courage, commonsense and fairness.

I went to many blogs and comments last night, and strangely, this whole incident has had a sort of unifying effect between both sides. Noboby wants their side to be silenced. So it's entirely possible a backlash will be forthcoming against the two so-called appointed leaders of the black people of America (most of whom don't appear to want them).

PC evil
I have said this before on other boards but it bears repeating: PC is NOT intended to resolve racial/ethnic problems; its purpose is to EXACERBATE them and create more problems. The purpose is to keep the people fighting each other so they won't look around to see what government is doing behind their backs.

We have to decide: will this be the United States of America or a Western equivalent of Bosnia or Kosovo with all the hatreds they are notorious for? Jackson and Sharpton would have no problem with the latter as long as they are in charge.

Let me give this a try...
What a bunch of honky white trash Nascar hillbilly hicks that post here.

Hey! That was fun. That was "free speech" wasn't it?

I have an article about this on my blog
Stop by the Heartland Patriot Blog and join the conversation. All points of view are welcome. Just click my name and you're there.

Bucko, you are right-on
If Imus would have played this thing differently he would have survived it. But because he immeadiately succumbed to the pressure thinking it would help the situation, he lost big. He provided a scalp for which race-baiting, poverty pimps like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson could be called to action. If Imus would have said something like 'I realize these young ladies are not what I described them as, but I was not trying to intentionally offend anyone. If they feel offended, I appologize. But it is not as if I used language that you can't hear on any number of hip-hop urban station accross the country.' There. Done. But no, he nailed himself to the cross of public opinion, and the drive-by's eagerly crucified him.
Imus is not the target. The goal is to shut down talk radio because it is effective.

Imus was not fired...

...because he said "NHH". He was fired because he was contrite and apologized.

Don Imus is a creation of the New York/Boston liberal media elite. He was only saying what they (they being white urban metrosexuals) thought in secret. However, Imus knows where a lot of liberal secrets are buried and, if he writes a book about his experience, other heads will roll. I hope he does, the Schadenfreude will be considerable.

So Imus was fired...
So what? The gvernment did not get involved, his employer did it! And he was correctly taken to task for it. I can recall a few years ago when a certain country singing music group made what sounded like a fairly innocuous comment about GWB which resulted in their music being pulled from many country music stations. At the time, many posters on this site stated that "speech has consequences", and that whatever happened to this group was perfectly OK.

And since when does free speech end with the right to offend? The right to offend may be secure from government attempts to censor, but does not preclude those who are offended from responding by whatever means they deem fit. Now perhaps Imus will become a conservative talk show host, where his right to offend those whom consevatives consider the "PC crowd" will not only be defended, but actually welcomed.

Devilspaintbrush

....sounds like you stretched a ligament ...only cure ...surgery ...BUT GET A SECOND OPINION .....COLOSSUS

For The Record.
For The Record I would like to make the following statements.
1- My parents were white liberals who fought for civil rights for every one irregardless of Race, Gender, gender orientation and Religion.
2- I was raised to do the same and have for many years.
3- What has come about in the last ten years since my parents death though has shown me that Mom and Dad. You were wrong.
4- you sought to create a world where all can have freedom of speech. Now only minorities have that right. If you are white in this country they do and say any thing they want to you and you are to take it and then ask more please?

Well folks to paraphrase a famous line from a movie. In order to protect my white family and their rights I am forced to say this. I Am Mad As Hell And I Am Not Going To Take It Any More. For now on I say what I want too and speak my mind. If it comes off Racist TOUGH. If you don't like it go tell Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. May be they will fabricate some thing and try to destroy me like they have to others. I don't Care any more.

Once again
I am amazed at how easily the posters here have fallen for Imus' race baiting.

Jeffislouis, some very excellent points. About comparisons to the atty firings, your points are reasoned, but that's not what 90% of the people said. They simply trotted out the 'serve at the pleasure of the President' argument. But then, I suspect that unlike many here, you actually think about these issues instead of parroting Limbaugh et. al.

seawolf
Don Imus was out of line, but apparently he's known for that. CBS appreciated the $$$ he sent their way; obviously, they never censored him.

Until now. A night or two ago, Dick Morris gave a litany of offensive statements by Imus. Okay. I'll believe him. I rarely tune into Imus in the Morning.

But, when Don Imus agreed to sit with Sharpton and explain and express his apology, I, and many others would have told him point blank, before he did this, DO NOT talk to Sharpton...or Jackson!

They are racial hustlers, IMO, and I find it hard to believe that Imus thought Sharpton would accept his apology and wish him continued success on his program. Ha!

Gene Touchet
Sounds like you intend to monitor rapper lyrics for a while...also the stations which play that stuff.

Will the Sharpton and Jackson ilk use their self-appointed power to trash this trash?

Let's not hold our collective breaths til that day!

I need help
I have read and re-read the Constitution and the Bill of rights. I have done the same with all of the other Amendments as well.
I still can't find anywhere in there the Right to Not be offended.
I can see the writing on the wall and its telling me that the end of conservative talk radio is next, because someone will be offended by the facts.

Blowing out both sides of mouth
I'm watching Hannity & Colmes and a superb black gentleman called Earl Ofari Hutchinson.

The segment is on Hillary, who was one of the first to condemn Imus and state that what he said was demeaning to women. Well, it is.

However, she doesn't mind taking $800,000 in campaign money from a rapper (sounds something like Timberland), whose lyrics are filthy beyond belief. The two black ladies, guests on the show, Angela McGlowan (R) and Sunny Hostin (D), both say she should return the money. It seems $800,000 buys the right to trash women because she's not going to return it. Money trumps everything.

Mr. Hutchinson says as Jackson and Sharpton have gone after Imus, they should be consistent and go after the rappers. (They had a clip of Sharpton at some rap function).

reply to merry_go_boy
Golly, I didn't know until I read your reply that TYPING IN ALL CAPS was an approach to argument. You don't really provide anything resembling an argument against, nor do you show any sign of having understood, my posts. I'm certainly not claiming, nor have I ever claimed, to be a conservative. I'm certainly not trying to pose as a conservative. I'm a liberal (and I know how much that must elevate your blood pressure. Chill, baby, chill)

Now let's look at what passes for your logical comment. Am I a "coward" (pardon, a COWARD) because I wrote something you disagree with? A strange definition, but then you guys aren't great at this sort of thing, are you?

What on earth is "MARXIST" about my comments? That I'm critical of racists? What you really mean (i.e., REALLY MEAN) is that if you don't like what someone says, you can call them a MARXIST, and think you've really hit one out of the park. Woo Woo

Now, a lot of the folks who've posted later this afternoon pretty much prove my point. You conservatives think it's just fine to indulge in racial epithets and slurs. No, even more, you think your precious freedoms are being taken away by us mean old liberals if we dare to say that you're all tasteless, classless boors and bigots. Even your woman, Ann Coulter, thought Imus was out of line. But as for you guys? No way. Like I said, you conservatives need to figure out how deeply attached you are to your racist vocabulary. Clearly it means a great deal to you. Again, to repeat my point--since so few of you seem to be able to follow it--racial epithets and slurs are a part of our tradition. Since you're conservatives, you must want to conserve that part of our tradition. Your posts prove my point, over and over, so your so-called arguments against me are so much dog drool.(I know nastier words, so fill in your own if you want.)

Question for Liberals???
If Imus ought to be removed from his position for his racially offensive comments then;

Why should we instead of removing them from their jobs;

talk and appease the equally racist and bigoted, leaders of Iran and Syria?

Imus
I usually do not side with you, Mr. Pat.
As a matter of fact I never side with you.
But in the case of the Imus Radio Show being cancelled, well, you are right on.
Good job!
Maria Boling

baseballdoc
I agree, but Sharpton and Jackson are also racist by the classic definition of the word. And at most what Imus said was intolerant. Of course in liberal circles there is no greater crime than intolerance. Unless you are refering to a gun owner or nascar fan because they are just backwoods idiots. The hypocracy of liberals knows no bounds.

On an unrelated topic I hurt my knee playing tennis about a year ago and now it makes a popping noise when I run or go down stairs. It doesn't really hurt but it feels uncomfortable. Do you think a doctor could do anything about it? I would appreciate any advice.

actreal
Shocker.
A liberal who listened to Imus.
His core demographic....
Don't worry, unlike the democratic party members, republicans don't try to convert people. People usually come of their own free will after finding themselves disgusted by the left over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. (did I mention over again?)
Nobody wants you to kill yourself.
What good is a dead guy anyway? Thanks to your friends on the hill, all that would end up doing is providing more tax money (thank you death tax democrats)....
:-)

Definition of Racism

.....Devilspaintbrush ...

.....This is the definition of racism that is taught in Black Colleges ..."Possessing the power to enforce one's discriminatory views and beliefs on others"...

.....Using that criteria ...Jesse/Sharpton are the two biggest racists in America ...They are not interested in Equality and Justice ...what they want is retribution and revenge ...they embrace victim hood to keep "whitey" on-the-hook for special interest perks ...

.....Personally I detest Imus ...I would have been OK with having him stripped naked and dragged into the Public Square to be castrated by Oprah ...then horse whipped by the entire Rutgers women's basketball team and left by the side of the road to be eaten by wild dogs .....COLOSSUS

I have
listened to Imus for over twenty years. And I am a Liberal. Or I was until Imus got canned by the PC police. Now, I'll just be simply a person. And please, don't canviss Me to become a RePug. I'd kill Myself first.

Tom....(and bryce)
A well reasoned reply, but based on an incorrect assumption.
Racism is not illegal.
Not at all.
There is no law in this country that prevents a person from being a racist.
Hate Crimes are illegal.
Firing someone based on their race is illegal.
But there is no law prohibiting speech that may be considered racist.
Fortunately.
Why fortunately? Because free speech laws specifically protect speech that goes against the norms.
And I also disagree with the notion you put forth that broadcasters have certain responsibilities. They do, but only to their audience (to entertain them) and their sponsors (to not embarrass them). However, the sponsors of the Imus show are well aware of the way he runs his show, so this again amounts to nothing new. The difference is that professional race pimps got involved and drew focus to it this time. And Imus got fired. The paralles you tried to draw between teachers and broadcaster is fallacious and doesn't stand. Teachers have a much different responsibility than broadcasters do and are held to a different standard (obviously). No matter how hard you look, apples don't look like oranges.

Bryce-
This wasn't slander.
Slander doesn't apply here as Imus didn't ruin or tarnish any member of that teams reputation in any measurable way. In order for slander to be applicable, this would have to have had a direct and measurable effect. It did not. So it wasn't slander. He didn't say "Jane Doe is a nappy headed hooker", he said the players looked like nappy headed ho's. Much different.

You go on to point out that the same people who defended the Presidents termination are decrying this one. The difference here is that Congress isn't wasting taxpayers money and congresses time with needless subpoenas and pointless hearings to investigate the matter. That's why many of us are so mad about the USA thing - both are justifiable firings. But in this case, it wasn't so much a result of people writing in to complain - they likely wouldn't have had it not been for two race pimps pushing this story to the front page! The fact is, and I would wager this to be true for at least 60% of the people who wrote in to complain, had Sharpton and Jackson NOT decided to villify Imus, none of you would have ever heard about this.
How many here claim to listen to Imus again?
Please. Imus didn't get fired because of what he said, he got fired because Sharpton and Jackson decided to use what he said to push race into the news. Again. This would have been ignored, as it likely should have been, and no one would have cared or noticed. Imus might have apologized on his own, but likely not as none of the players heard him actually say it.
That's the key to the whole thing.
Who actually heard this? None of the players, coaches, or training staff heard Imus say this about them. Virtually none of the people here listen to Imus. No one I know listens to Imus. No one I know heard him say any of this until the pimps put it on every news outlet.
So I will say it again -
This is a huge controversy built up by two race pimps who wish to remain relevant.
If they hadn't gotten wind of it, it would have been just another stupid Imus bit that nobody laughed at or cared about.
You know, like most of his show.

I'm Appalled
at You being offended. I'll see Your offended and raise One offended and Two appalled. If You call and raise one Imus,I'll see Your Imus annnnnd raise Five Coulters and SIX 'I'm shocked, shocked'. I'm shocked that You're insulted by My appalled that You're offended Stop Me before I offend again!

America is
running scared......don't dare utter a critical word about a black, period. Any comment Sharpton and Jackson disagree with is automatically a "racist" condition. Blacks in politically correct America such as Sharpton and Jackson control the media.....it they say shi11, the media squats and asks how much....do all blacks support the likes of Jackson and Sharpton?? Where are the influential blacks that are never heard from?

Would a "white caucus" be acceptable? Would a "White Miss America" contest be acceptable? If no, why not......there are black causus, black Miss America contest.......

Men and women are dying in war, border agents wrongly convicted sit in prison, we are fed endless garbage on Nicole....America is destructing from within.........

Revolution can't be far away...........

Racism
I think the worst of this is how quickly and easily someone can be branded a "racist".

Forget the text, LISTEN to the soundbite. What Imus said was a JOKE, and in trying to be "hip" he was using the EXACT SAME "street slang" spoken by all those blacks who now denounce him so vehemently. Was it in poor taste, offensive, objectionable, mean-spirited? Since when does anyone really care about such things?

Bottom line--Imus is demonstrably NOT a racist. He has "minority" friends, "minority" business associates, "minority" employees, and so on and so forth. Now, if a lifetime of actions can be negated by a single [bleep]ing joke, then the Thought Police are already running the show.

When we can all speak the same language, then we will have achieved equality.

WWJD
At times like these I like to think about the ever popular phrase, "What would Jesus do?"
Here's what I think he would do. He would see Al and Jesse standing over to one side with large stones in their hands shouting at Imus that he was a racist and sexist. Then he would look at Imus apologizing profusely. The he would calmly stoop down, draw slowly in the dirt, and then say "Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone". Then he would look at Imus and say "Go. And sin no more".
You see, what a great moment it would have been if Al had listened to Imus heartfelt apology and self recrimination and then stood up, reached across the desk, shook his hand and said "I believe you brother. Now let's work together to stamp out racism".
Sorry no great moment. Just more hatred and race baiting. And Jesus wept.

Only in the US
Only in the United States can the use of a slang word coined by the targeted minority be classified racist. The Rutgers women were correct to take serious exception to Imus. Too many others were playing well the role of hypocrite.

On reflection what needs to be done is to reverse the trend of degrading women from the cesspool of rap song lyrics to the slutty Bratz dolls that pervades not just the blacks but across whole segments of society.

If this incident marks the tipping point away from today's business as usual.

Imus if Retirement Age
Imus has been around 30 years and I've listened to him off and on during that entire time. He was basically an entertainer, saying things bold and inappropriate enough to make millions of listeners tune in and chuckle.

Imus was not a liberal - certainly not as the term normally is defined. He's a McCain fan, and how many liberals are for McCain? He was a strong supporter of Lieberman in the 2006 election, and Lieberman is high on the liberal list of good men gone bad. He also supported Santorum in Pennsylvania, about as right-wing as you can get.

It probably is good that Imus was fired. Besides, at age 66 and with $10 million or so a year for some years he doesn't need a job. Likely he will command huge fees to speak hither and yon. And his investments must be huge, too.

Maybe with Imus' dismissal other arrogant loudmouths on radio and TV will tone things down a bit. I rather hope Howard Stern and Michael Savage get fired, too. It's time for the return of some civility. Maybe even O'Reilly, Hannity, Ingraham, and other dogmatists will loosen up some and cut back on their attempts to browbeat their guests by interrupting, talking over, etc. No spin zone? Is O'Reilly being funny?

Those on both extremes - far left leftists and far right rightists - need to learn some manners. For example, I get tired of O'Reilly's constant attempts to divide Americans and lead crusades against Canada, Vermont, the public schools, etc. It's such wild accusations by him and others (yes, Michael Moore and Al Franken, too) that are driving too many listeners into factions bitterly opposed to one another. Bad for the nation. We need to hear more voices of reason and moderation.

What we need is a return to some civility - less anger and rancor, less violence in our films and video games, less promiscuity in the soaps, less profanity, better manners, etc.

My main regrets in all this:
(1) a group of admirable young women at Rutgers were unfairly libeled;
(2) Imus did many good things that are not being properly acknowledged - e. g., his ranch for kids, pro-veteran positions, concern for victims of autism, etc.
(3) Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, two self-promoting buffoons who continuously damage race relations in this country, come out smelling like roses when they also need to be 'fired' from the public forum.

Keep smiling.

Tom
Way to go citing an online dictionary. Do you believe everything you read on the internet?

A racist, by definition, is someone who believes in the genetic superiority of one race over another. Or the genetic inferiority of one race as compared to another.

Thanks for proving my point.

Racism: am I using the wrong dictionary?
"jigaboo" (to be fair, not from Imus, but apparently Bernie, but Imus allegedly let it go) & "nappy-headed ho" nothing to do with race? Really?

I would have thought that any derogatory reference to a racial group was racist by defninition.

(Free dictionary - online)
Adj. 1. racist - based on racial intolerance; "racist remarks"
racial - of or CHARACTERISTIC OF RACE or races or ARISING FROM DIFFERENECES AMONG GROUPS(my emphasis); "racial differences"; "racial discrimination"

Jeffislouie (contd)
And for me, its not about Sharpton & Jackson either. Its bigger than them. But good on them for not backing down to the fake remorse of Imus. Yes he's done good things. But as you say yourself, he'll be back on the airwaves.

As Tom Delay said in his recent article, the right need to be better organised and adopt the same pressure tactics as the left (not that this is a left/right issue for me because Imus seems to me to be more to the left anyhow). We need to hold all people to higher standards & that's starting to happen now thanks to Fox News & people like O'reilly.

Sharpton and Jackson
are professional race baiters. And judging from many of the posts here they are very good at it.

They have succeded, brilliantly in fact, in getting the public to divert their attention from the real issue at hand to themselves, which is their stock in trade. It will never cease to amaze me how quickly people like the posters here take the bait. Just examine the posts here. Most make some cursory statement condemning Imus then proceed to write paragraph after paragraph venting their feelings about racial relations.

The point here is that not the race baiters, black outrage regarding rap lyrics, political correctness, etc...It is about the fact that Imus used his platform to publicly demean a group of innocent young women. Race was simply the conduit for his vileness.

Regarding the threat to the First Amendment. Yes it does recognize the right of free speech, but it is not a license to slander. Period.

To those who decry his firing, two principles at work here. One is the marketplace at work. I am one of many consumers who contacted Imus' sponsors and let them know their continued support would be a factor in our future buying decisions. They made an market based decision and pulled their advertising. For example, a friend who works in the public relations dept. at GM tells me they were inundated with calls and emails like mine.

Secondly, I am fascinated by the number of posters here who have defended the President's firing of the US attys on other pages then decry the Imus firing. Guess what. He was an employee who served at the pleasure of his employers. His comments displeased him, they showed him the door. Period.

And the definition of racist is?

Everyone on this thread who wrote that what Imus said was racist does not know the meaning of the word. Understand what it is you are saying before you poop out of your mouths. Fools.

JGP
Thanks so much for cutting to the chase.

Why defend the indefensible?
And the headline read: "Conservatives at TownHall.com rush to defend Imus's use of racial and gender biased expressions."

Thanks Pat
Great article that articulated my feelings about Imus better than I ever could on my own.

Jeffislouie
Good reply. Coherent & persuasive. But I must again disagree.

Because the comments were not only reprehensible, but illegal. Racism is illegal. Not only that, they were nasty (bryce) and symptomatic of our decadent culture (Pamela).

The mob loves that culture (eg Springer, Rosie v Donald, rap lyrics) & here's where the media help to shape our culture (the 'does art imitate life or life imitate art' debate). If child pornography were legal, I would wager it would filter into the mainstream. There sure would be a market for it (it was mainstream in good-old Ancient Greece). As Dennis Prager says, people are not basically good. They need to be controlled by the law (if not God's law then actual law).

It's time we stamped out this decadent culture. We can't rely on the mob to do it for us. I dont see them simply 'switching off' the radio dial when the immoral stuff is on. As others have pointed out, the mob love this type of thing. I await Prager's words of wisdom on this one. I think he would say that Imus got what he deserved, but we have to be consistent. ie if Imus is held to account, so must everyone, white, black & other.

So absolutely, I am also saying that the rappers & others be held to account too. It wont be an easy task reeling in this sub-culure, & that's why it is absolutely essential that this goes to debate in the MSM now. Hopefully the sacking of Imus will be the spark that starts this debate.

This is not about freedom of speech. When you are on the airwaves you have certain responsibilities, just a private school teacher (governed by the free market) does not have a licence to sprout racism either. Its about living in a decent society.

He got his strips...
Imus is taking his whipping like a man. If society doesn't learn anything else some will learn from that.

"Everyone else is doing it," is no defense and he never used it.

Whitlock

These so called men of God
There is only one place in the whole bible where the word "reverend " is used. "Holy and reverend is His name" speaking of God him self, so I won't be calling Mr.Sharpton, or Mr. Jackson, by that title. But I can't help but wonder why these men aren't concerned about the filth that is being pumped into the heads of their young people each and every day. Why don't they try and teach them to lift themselves up, be proud of who thy are, by studying hard, by working hard, and earning respect. Instead they teach them to blame everyone else for their problems.....If one of them does break away and do something great, they call them an Uncle Tom, or say they aren't black enough,or some other nonsence. They are standing by crying foul while their black community sinks into more darkness. They will have to answer someday.,to someone who doesn't care what color he is, or who he tries to blame. The ONE whos name they try and carry.

I've been expecting your kind of conservative to crawl into the daylight. So you think a woman who is not a virgin and is not married is a "ho," do you? Do you mean these girls take money for sex, because that's what a "ho" is. As for "nappy," look it up, dude. You're not even close.

Conservative bigots, look no further. One of your guys awaits.

Freedom of speech is almost gone
From what I've heard of Don Imus, he will not be much of a loss..............
but,
I am concerned about the sanitation police who are assuming some authority to shut a man down and ruin his career on the basis of crude speech.
Isn't freedom of speech essentially being able to say things that others do not want to hear?
If we are only free to speak, 'so long as we don't offend another by our words'....
Be assured that our adversaries on the left or whoever will get very 'sensitive' to insults.
And if we are going to shoot this guy down, why not the filthy hip hoppers and rappers and all that ghetto bacteria that makes a buck off of peoples' anger and frustration, waving it to a white hot heat?
Oh forgive me, I said white!

Tom...
The free market SHOULD determine what is appropriate. Do not misconstrue this to mean that advertisers or consumers should dictate what someone on the radio says, but rather the almighty dollar SHOULD be used by consumers, and advertisers, as a means to let someone know they stepped over the line.
Howard Stern was all but finished until sponsors started recognizing that his show was drawing listeners. They happily jumped aboard. Sure, Stern straddled the line and sometimes crossed it, but radio has always been a bastion of free speech that was regulated by the public.
It's an amazing thing, the radio. All one has to do is manipulate one of the buttons (volume, on-off, or tuning) to avoid the talk they do not like. If enough people don't like it, ratings slip then advertisers pull out. OR, in the case of Imus, listeners still listen and advertisers pull out. When this happens, the show is sent a message.
That's the free market for you!
I find it ironic that you seem to want to encourage private groups to have the right to censor free speech.
Adolphus Busch, the former head of Budweiser, was an open anti-semite who encouraged nazism. Did the free market care? Nope. he made good beer.
Henry Ford was anti-worker and anti-semitic. He republished the protocols of the elders of zion, a widely debunked work of fiction that demonized the jewish people. Did the public stop buying Fords? Nope.
But some people did. They sent their message and it was heard.
Both Ford and Busch shut up.
No one called for them to be fired.
My point is that the free market supports entertainment. When that support goes away, so does the entertainment.
Getting Imus fired did very little to solve the problem.
He will likely be back on the air again in a matter of months.
The problem is that now a precedent has been set. Don't like what someone says? Get them fired.
That isn't free speech.
That is restricted speech.
And in an arena where free speech is essential, that is unacceptable.
Yes, Imus' statement was reprehensible and should have been condoned, but this isn't and shouldn't be the thing that defines him.
He was raised millions for charities, supports black businesses, helped get a black senator elected, and has done more for the population at large than Sharpton ever could.
Yet he became a demon.
And you are too quick to ignore the rest of his life and pass judgement based on a rather unfunny comedy segment he has been doing on air for 40 years or so.
His statement wasn't said in anger, nor was it intended to be an honest expression of his feelings. He was kidding. We may not find that funny, but that is not important. What is important is that the precedent has been set-
Sharpton has the power to take down whomever he deems fit.
What you see as a statement of a citizenry under control by money is the exact opposite of how it actually works.
You claim that we become slaves to the dollar when the reality is the dollar works for the public in this case. If you don't like a talk show host, THAT is when you write the advertisers to express your disgust and boycott their products. If they listen, you win. If not, you made your statement and took your stand.
But what exactly did Sharpton do to pressure CBS?
He threatened to march on CBS and boycott their products.
So we became a slave to Sharpton and his race baiting opportunists.
And THAT is unnacceptable.

I believe
" Who, after all, believed the slur was true? No one."

I do not believe the female Rutgers basketball team consists of virgins. Nor do I believe they are married. Put those two together, you have "hos". And of the pictures I saw of the slouching, slack-jawed, masculine, tattooed females, at least one was nappy-headed; one definition I've recently heard of "nappy headed" is that person described has hair in disarray as though just awakened from a nap. Well, in that case they were ALL nappy-headed, even the blonde.
Females are no longer taught poise, modesty, or character. But they are taught how to push a leather ball through an iron ring... just like the boys! Oh boy!

Imus is condemned for using a slur that is frowned upon by the PC community (guilt-ridden white liberals and avaricious minorities), yet these females are not held to any standard of behavior that would reflect positively on *woman*hood. I'll celebrate the ones who graduate with a 4.0 average.

Offended or Hurt Feelings?
To quote Charles Sykes

"Once FEELINGS are establishedas a barometer of acceptable behavior, speech and by extension, thought become only as free as the most sensitive group will permit."

If your self image is based on a foundation of oppressive victimhood you need to be hyper sensitive to identify examples of constant oppression to justify your identity.

Does the First Ammendment guarantee Freedom of Screech?

I guess we can assume...
...that if we checked the iPods of the black women on the Rutgers team we would find no "music" by Jay Z, Snoopp Dogg, 50cent or any of the other vile "artists" in rap and hip-hop who actually invented this so-called language and continue to make millions thanks to corporations the likes of whom have thrown Imus under the bus. And I don't even want to get started on the Kings of Hypocrisy, Sharpton and Jackson. I have to admit that the biggest laugh I've had over this whole phony brouhaha was when I read the quote from Bill Clinton when he referred to Imus' comment as "sexist." OMG, that's hypocrisy of a whole new stripe..

Imus ultimately responsible
Yes, not being familiar with the term or the vernacular, I do now see the other side.

Still I dont see that a climate of 'sorry' is an adequate deterrence for future inappropriate (actually its more than that, its unacceptable) actions such as this one. And if it is unacceptable, therefore 'sorry' is not enough. Just because a certain class of blacks use it doesnt make it acceptable to all blacks or acceptable to non-blacks.

Imus is in the shock-jock industry where quick smart, put-down comments is the stock-in-trade. OK, great. He lives by that shady trade (which makes these people millions), he can die by that trade for all I care. I dont have ANY sympathy for him.

Agree with bryce & Pamela. We live in a culture of the gratuitous insult. That's true. Interesting that so many people who claim to be about 'morals' and the good of the country are also prepared to say insulting others is fine & get over it.

But we also live in culture of the gratuitous apology. It's phony & pragmatic. And the only reason why Imus apologised was because he was trying in vain to save his career. If it was in no jeopardy at all, would he have apologised (begged) so much? I dont know, has he done it before? Not from what I hear.

And the above is all before i read Flagwaver - spot on!

As for the frequent: "The free market should dictate what is appropriate." This is saying we have to be a slave for the almighty dollar. Our moral standards change with the fads of the mob. No thanks.

The broader solution, (about this & other issues such as 1-way racism) as others say is indeed to open up public debate about it on the MSM. Who could possibly object? (Only a lefty).

Political Correctness runs Amok

.....The Free Market took Imus out ...when his sponsors pulled out ...Imus was dead meat ...

....In the case of the Duke Three ...this was a Liberals wet dream ...three white wealthy male jocks (an unprotected class) accused of raping a poor black female ...a double protected class ...black/female ...as in the Scarlett Falcons) ...the case fit the Liberal template like a glove ...the press were having orgasms ...

.....when the charges against the Duke players turned out to be false ...who got blamed? ...why the Prosecutor of course ...for raising false hopes of a media blood bath...the press was really ticked .....COLOSSUS

Another homerun by Buchanan
In the past, I have often strenuously disagreed with Imus on political issues, although in the last year I have come to agree with him on Iraq.

I tend to the conservative side of the political spectrum, and Imus is conventionally liberal...his guests often reflect liberalism...Frank Rich, Tom Friedman, Howard Fineman, Christopher Dodd...but to his credit, Imus also frequently interviewed conservatives such as Pat Buchanan.

I am ashamed to live in a nation where race pimps such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson can frame a debate over morality on the public airwaves.

There is no law mandating an individual or group be exempt from insult. I do not approve of what Imus said about Rutger's women basketball team, but it does not rise to the level of his banishment.

Christians, southerners(so-called rednecks)are often vilified and insulted by comedians and even in television programming.

The doublestandard and hypocrisy is staggering.

Buchanan is correct.

Political Correctness Run Rampant
Was Imus a fool with a potty-mouth? Indisputedly - which is why he's been on talk radio for three decades. However, his fate reveals something that has been growing like a cancer for a number of years.

Ask yourselves: If one of the basketball teams had been made up of white college age women and Imus called them "young succulent b---h kitties" or "tight-assed hotties who'd suck-start a B-52" would there be even one one-hundreth the "rage" and indignation? Of course not - it would have blown over in two or three days. But the comment was made about members of a minority group - a PROTECTED minority group - and that means they can never be criticized, insulted - nope, you can't say anything bad about them. You can't even say you don't like them - your right of free speech, your right of freedom of association no longer exists. You must get down on bended knee before them. What happened to Imus is just the latest example - doing away with certain college mascots because they "offend", censoring PRIVATE parties on college campuses because participants wear costumes satirizing other members of the campus community, muzzling anyone who does not sing the praises of illegal aliens - it is all part of a cancerous pattern.

The Rutgers women learned a life lesson - though not necessarily a good one. What they should have learned is that in the real world, not everyone is going to love you or give a tinker's damn whether they hurt your feelings. That is part of being an adult - it isn't pretty, but it goes with the territory. Instead, what they learned is that from now on they can play a race card and a sex card whenever they don't get their way - and contemporary society will get down on bended knee to accomodate them.

Count on it. In the not-too-distant future there is going to be one very ugly backlash against the current system of political correctness and muzzling. You can push a majority population only so far - and then it lashes back. And oh how wonderful it will be when Jesse and Al start getting told to simply "shut up" and clean up their own acts.

Am I wrong?
Or did the 'Sharpton & Jackson Racial Protection Agency' just got given unlimited power to referee our language?

Disclaimer: In accordance with the Sanitation in Language Not Voted or, Interpreted Protection Act of 2007; the previous message was sanitized, sterilized and, pasteurized of any incorrect minority offending epithets by Sharpton Jackson Inc., not to be mistaken for the racial FCC.

Dancing with joy?
Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson must be dancing with joy right now? Oops, was that racist too?
These two should not be appointed as PC police for the nation.
I'm so sick of this story and the tales of how scared and damaged the Rutgers team is by Imus's comments. These were adult female athletes that probaly grew up hearing "Ho" in their own community. While none of this is their fault I'm sick of hearing how the girls will struggle with these comments and try to move on with their lives. I'm sure the've heard a lot worse.
I'm suprised no MySpace photos have shown up of the team or it's members. I guess that will be the next step in this story that will never die.

Insanity from the race pimps...
Sure, firing Imus really repaired race relations in this country.
I mean, just this morning I saw a man wearing a white hood hugging a gang member.
Blacks and whites have never felt closer. Thanks "reverend" Sharpton.
This is total nonsense.
The free market should dictate what is appropriate, not race baiting morons who only see things one way.
Sharpton and Jackson are jokes of themselves and thankfully, are considered so by a growing population of black americans.
So Imus was fired huh? Crazy. I'm sure as he's relaxing on his enormous compound bathing in money he'll think back and say "What a way to retire."
Or, more likely, Imus will be back on the air in less than a year on a different station making money hand over fist for a lucky company willing to give him another shot.
Yes, I'm saying it. This was nothing. It was silly. Sharpton didn't accomplish anything.
The divide between black and white racial attitudes has grown deeper. Thankfully, I have managed to keep an open, honest, and frank dialogue with some exceptional black friends who understand that just because I am white doesn't mean I am a racist. We had a long talk about this stupidity and here are some of the conclusions we came to together:
- Al Sharpton is a joke. He does not seek nor excel at dealing with serious racial issues. He is an opportunist who profit by propagating the racial divide. It seems, in my friends opinions, that the black community in general don't view him with respect, but rather loathe him as misrepresentative of black views.
- Jesse Jackson, I contend, is a dishonest race baiter as well. My friend thinks he is a better man than I give him credit for, but we agree to disagree - without him considering me a racist and without me assuming he is defending Jackson because they both share a similar amount of melanin.
- The Rutgers girls are not ho's and are not nappy headed. It seems that many of them are mouth breathers though, and mouth breathers deserve to be considered less intelligent. I watched in horror as these women, happy to be subjected to victimhood, sat at their press conference, mouths agape as if wanting to say a word that started with the letter 'A'. Maybe it was 'apple'. Maybe it was 'a**hole', who knows. Someone might have spent a few minutes telling them that sitting on stage with their mouths agape makes them look stupid.
- The Rutgers girls likely never heard of Imus until someone brought this up to them. None of them heard what Imus said until or unless someone played it for them. They claim to be emotionally scarred for life? That is not proof of confidence, adulthood, or any semblence of strength. Are they really scarred for life by what some 60 something year old shock jock says about them? Give me a break. This prompted me to tell my buddy a story about growing up in the only jewish household in my neighborhood. I was chased home with some regularity by kids yelling 'kike' and throwing rocks at the 'jew boy'. Oddly, I remain unscarred for life. And I bear no grudge. Why? Because just like back then, I still believe that ignorance doesn't harm me - it only proves ignorance. One cannot exist in this world if they are unable to allow slurs and attacks to be let go.
- Firing Imus sets a precedent that I am uncomfortable with as an American citizen. This is a slippery slope indeed. Yesterday, a man who has been in the talk business for 40+ years lost his job for saying 'nappy headed ho's'. Tomorrow will someone be fired for disagreeing with a political platform? Tomorrow will someone be fired for voicing their opinion on islam or christianity?
CBS killed a show put on by a man that I dislike. But the principle of terminating someone for one statement, made in jest and totally in the spirit and charachter of his show (imus is an equal opportunity offender), is terrifying.
I intend to boycott CBS radio - and I plan on drafting a letter to let them know it.
MSNBC? I know that channel exists, but does anyone really watch it? I'd boycott them too if not for the fact that I haven't spent any more time on that channel than it takes to flip past it....
Perhaps Imus should consider suing Sharpton for defamation of character and attempt to recover damages....

The Real Loser
I can't see how the recent "Imus adventure" and the way it was handled can in any way help race relations. One group can speak with impunity saying things another group is not allowed to. Another example of "separate and unequal" which can only lead to more resentment and racial divide. This was also another example of hysteria and censorship instead of open discussion and debate when the subject has to do with racial issues.

reply to Demosthenes
Is it "oversimplification" to note the existence of the vocabulary of racial slurs and epithets? It doesn't even take any advanced education to figure this out. Most of us, unless we are very young, know the words perfectly well. There's nothing "post-modern" or "neo-marxist" about it.

AS for the Duke lacrosse team, I completely agree--they were treated badly and got a really raw deal. I don't minimize their hardship, because, contrary to what you seem to think, there's no contest between the Rutgers women and the Duke men. Both suffered. If anything, the Duke players suffered more because their ordeal was protracted. The ambitious D.A. should be sued to recover the money the players' parents spent on tuition/fees, etc., as well as plain old damages. However, the Duke guys did, after all, hire a stripper for a party. I've got a problem with that, regardless of the race of the stripper, but I doubt if many conservatives see things that way.

Lynching, eh?
Please spare me all the drivel about how Imus was railroaded, becasue he wasn't! He said what he said and he paid the price for it. You may have the right to say what you want, but it is unseemly and cowardly to try to run away from the consequences of your words. You have a right to free speech, but you do not have a right to host a radio show!

And if we are going to tell this story, lets tell it all. On the Friday after Imus made his comments he told the NYT that people should basically get over what he said, because it was just a bad joke that didn't go over well. There was no initial apology made to the Scarlet Knights, there was not even an acknowldegment that what he said was even hurtful...he just saw it is a joke gone wrong. It was only when the story began to gain some serious media traction that Imus issued his first half hearted apology. And through all of his apologies, I have not heard any real contrition. it has always been a sense that Imus was not sorry about what he said, he was sorry that what he said caused heat to come down on him.

And if you are going to fixate on what he said, and try to make it out not to be so bad then tell everyone the whole story. "Nappy headed ho" was not the worst thing that Imus said; calling those women jigaboo was much worse! There is no defense for saying that about anyone, no matter who says it. So don't weep for Don Imus, all that has happened to him is that his venom finally managed to engulf him.

And I think it says something about Pat Buchanan that he would write that somehow Don Imus was being lynched. Lynching is "to be put to death by mob action without legal sanction or due process of law". That more applies to the Duke 3 than to Don Imus; they had their rights trampled on and their names sullied for the benefit of a lying, overzealous prosecutor and an obviously inept and corrupt police department. Don Imus was fired from his job for something he said and for bringing a sense of disrepute to his employers. Just becasue you have been his constant guest and you like him personally does not mean that he did nothing wrong. And wjat does it say about Pat and his other frequent guests that continued to support him by their appearances, even though he had been making these types of racially charged...if not racist...comments for years? You are known by the company you keep, right?

it is my sincere hope that
jj and al have FINALLY been exposed to the rest of the country as the hypocrites they are and have been since I have known about them.

I express this hope because I have to believe (hope) that they have finally overplayed their hand to the extent that even liberals are wincing.

al sharpton came to public attention with the Tawana Bradley (IT DIDN'T HAPPEN) incident and has been going downhill ever since.

What little credibility jj had left was used up long ago when it was revealed that he had fathered a daughter via a worker for PEOPLE UNITED TO SAVE HUMANITY (there's a hoot!!!) and had used their funds to help with some of his expenses. Not only that but during that time he had been giving some high-level spiritual counseling to Bill 'knob-job' Clinton. If anyone out there is becoming aware of absurdity overload I understand.

Only in America

WHO CAN YOU OFFEND
It is apparrent that there are some groups you can offend, and there are those which are not allowed. If Al Sharpton and Jese Jackson are "Reverends", did they say anything about the bloggers John Edwards hired whose vile and filthy comments about Mary, Jesus, and God were allowed to be spread all over the place? I didn'r hear a peep from them, these holy chrisrtioan ministers.

Mister Imus
I saw ole Imus in a liquor store yesterday. I thought I heard him say that he has learned one thing from this latest deforming by Jessie and Big Al. That is, you can make derogatory comments about white people and republicans, but not about black people.

He's right, it IS only the beginning...
...of the end of freedom in this nation.

We are being bombarded from all sides by (mostly leftists) ITCHING to revoke ALL freedoms in this nation, and to replace our constitutional republic with something indiscernible from the Iranian theorcracy in terms of the level of freedom.

There are these race hustlers -- Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton -- who lunge at every opportunity to silence anyone whom they perceive to be a threat to their free ride, and, of course, the all-too-happy to appease corporate wimps too scared of their own shaddow to stand up to those p1mps.

You got our congress that is eager to hand all of our jobs to criminals, prohibit notifying the authorities of terrorist activity, seek to jack up taxes beyond confiscatory levels, and a laundry list of other ridiculous infringements on what once were sacred freedoms.

Then there's the kooks that are attempting to use junk science to destroy us economically with measures even they admit will have little to no effect on the supposed problems they are complaining about. These science kooks have accidentally let slip their true intentions when none other than Jacques Chirac of France announce that Kyoto was a step toward his utopian dream of a multinational governing body with the authority to impose "fairness" (read: take all the wealth in the US and hand it to the less wealthy nations, like France) on the world.

Wave buh bye to your freedoms, people. There they go, right out the window.

RIP I-Man
All the self-righteous hypocrites out there, both white and black, can relax now. The monstrous Don Imus (the Grendel of the 21st century) has been slain!

But who is the victor, the hero, in all this hyperbolic public outrage? Certainly not the spirit of the 1st amendment, free speech. Nor talk shows which pulled the radio industry from the grave. And not Imus who will probably be sued (the American Way).

The winner is the socialist left of the political spectrum which can now set its sights a little higher. Howard Stern and Don Imus have been vanquished from broadcast airwaves, so the precedent has been set.

Who's next on the hit list? I'll bet Fox News Channel, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, etc. because they are effective in countering the socialists' anti-American/anti-capitalist messages.

This isn't about offending black females on a basketball team (they didn't even hear Imus's comment); it's about power and control of speech in America.

Gestell: Really?
"It is clearly our God-given right to insult others. Our country (like all other countries) has a rich vocabulary of traditional and recent racial slurs and epithets. Conservatives need to man up and embrace this heritage. Defend tradition--and say something nasty to or about somebody on the basis of race or just about any other attribute they might have."

Thank you for the lesson in “historical oversimplification” derived via the crucible of post-modern, neo-marxism. Do you think that the posters here as a young and impressionable as your fawning students? The US also has an extended history of Left-wing hypocrisy & selective outrage, i.e., the silence is deafening WRT the racist statements made by one Crystal Gail Mangum & her supporters WRT the DUKE Lacrosse Team. Compare the effect of Ms. Mangum's charges on the Duke lacrosse team and Imus' words on the Rutgers woman's basketball team:
+ The Duke Lacrosse season was cancelled essentially without cause.
+ The coach was forced to resign.
+ "Mug shots" of the members of evil, guilty, mostly-white Lacrosse team were posted on campus by radical feminists for the purpose of harassment
+ One of the gang of 88 professors who summarily convicted the three members of the DUKE Lacrosse team in the court of public opinion, Mark Anthony Neal, an African Studies professor characterized this as "a case of racialized sexual violence."
+ Feminist, women children stood enmasse outside the "DUKE lacrosse house", shouted profanity and made verbal threats on campus in the interest of extorting confessions from the guilty evil white males prior to the trial
+ District attorney, Michael Nifong, who was running for reelection in a majority-black jurisdiction, publicly pandered to tangible anti-white sentiments of his black voter base.
+ A Durham, N.C. resident , obviously a Nifong supporter, called it "racial terrorism"
+ The racist “New Black Panthers” group marched through the campus & made several unsubstantiated, gratuitous statements on TV WRT the accused
+ In January, Jess Jackson stated that the Rainbow/Push Coalition would pay Ms Mangum’s college tuition even if it turns out she completely fabricated her story.
Contrast the Duke and Rutgers sports teams. A white man insulted the Rutgers team with a racially-insensitive remark. No arrests were made. No coach fired. No season cancelled. No parent had to mortgage their home IOT to spend thousands of dollars on defense attorney fees for their child. They were insulted. Wow. Boohoo. Spare me. Perhaps Imus was unconsciously commenting about the overt “Tattoo” display & the apparent LACK OF ETHNIC/RACIAL DIVERSITY in the Rutgers University women’s basketball program. This is ironic because Rutgers actively employs affirmative action/quotas IOT maintain the properly racial representation in its student body. Unfortunately, like most college sports favored by hyphenated-Americans, quotas IOT maintain proper racial representation doesn’t apply to basketball programs.
In contrast, in addition everything previously cited, Duke Team members were arbitrarily accused of a crime enmasse. Reputations were damaged. DNA swabs were taken. Charges were filed against the Duke three (3) based upon a suspect line up that only consisted of Duke Lacrosse players. The district attorney publicly stated that a rape had occurred before having any evidence. The accused are now completely innocent & have to start to rebuild their damaged lives. The black woman who made the false charges of rape against the lacrosse team is going to walk away w/ a scholarship. The MSM refuses to communicate her name & identity. Please expect the very same “civil rights establishment” that is united in their efforts to destroy Imus to protect Crystal Gail Mangum at all costs. Expect most “conservative” women to remain relatively silent in this matter. Why? Simple matrix function: Man= evil, women=victim; white=evil, black=victim.
Where is your outrage Gestell? The Duke 3 had racist/sexist things said about them via the MSM for a FULL YEAR. Where is the outrage on MSNBC or CBS. Where are the public apologies from all the Female-Chauvinists who convicted the DUKE 3 in the forum of public opinion on TV ? Where is Nancy Grace’s apology. Where are the femi-Nazi lawyers on Fox News Oh. I’m sorry, that’s different. Minimally franchise white males aren’t entitled to DIGNITY as individuals. The silence is deafening.

check it out
The best commentary I have seen on Imus is by Jason Whitlock the sports columnist in the Kansas City Star. If I had any talent on the computer I could link it but im a computer idiot but definately check it out. April 11 column

racist MSM
All MSM let you write "honkey", "whitey", etc in their blogs, but not "nggr".
Not a racism?

RACIST WHO?
Gordon, who fired Imus, never did let any white person in his (then) NAACP.
It is not a racism???? Then white is black, criminals are right and the hell with the truth???

Imus= Litmus test
Look at the long term consequences, precedent being set & the ulterior motives of the left-wing MSM. Marxism as an economic model is an abject failure, but is an appalling success as a tool of social engineering. Left-wing philosophy: members of “victim” groups are automatically granted gravitas that should shield them from the insensitive comments of big, bad evil white men (member of “oppressor” group) like Don Imus. The MSM sees the neo-Marxist tool of “race” as the key to destroying alternative media like talk radio. Imus was just an experiment, a “litmus test” WRT evaluating tactics. Focus on the overtly “anti-PC” hosts on talk radio. Wait until they say something that can be interpreted as being racially insensitive, and then launch the relentless attack. Go after networks, stations, advertisers, etc. Concentrate on them one at a time. Select prey that looks the most vulnerable. Isolate that prey and go in for the kill. Just about every “talk radio” host have made disparaging comments about leftwing black politicians, black celebrities, black thug sub-culture, entitlement mentality, etc. that could be employed as the basis for a full force attack. Public apologies will not be enough in the relentless effort to neutralize members of the EVIL, WHITE MALE majority.

I love Pat!
Pat-
Thank God for you and your no nonsense ability to speak the truth! The hypocracy of CBS and MSNBC are unbelievable- They are SHOCKED shocked that Imus insulted someone's looks!

Because that's what he did. He was trying to say that the Rutgers girls looked tough or 'urban' compared to the Tenessee girls (also mostly black) who, he thought, looked cute!

Any network who holds Sharpton and Jackson up as the kings of the racially acceptable remark- NBC and CBS- gets my pity for their lack of sophistication and fairplay. They will also lack my (most desirable demographic) attention.

Not all bad
One of the great things about this country, and this incident, is that the legal system didn't have to get involved in the Imus issue.

CBS radio shot themselves in the foot, as did the advertisers who ran for cover. MSNBC just eliminated half of their audience. It was business decisions that became mass hysteria by the media. That's how they make their money. Personally, I switched channel everytime a station airs an Imus spot.

Nobody cares what Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson think. That's always been the case and still is.

Imus will probably end up on XM Radio. People who listened to him will tune in there. At the end of the day, this is a big yawner.

Another great thing about America is that we have a right to offend and also a right to be offended. Anyone who can't embrace that should move.

Man up, conservatives!
It is clearly our God-given right to insult others. Our country (like all other countries) has a rich vocabulary of traditional and recent racial slurs and epithets. Conservatives need to man up and embrace this heritage. Defend tradition--and say something nasty to or about somebody on the basis of race or just about any other attribute they might have.

Imus is supposed to be a liberal, but I'll bet a lot of his fans would follow him if he gets a gig on some conservative radio station. Give this man a job so he can insult again! You know you want to keep on listening to him.

We missed and opportunity
I agree with Pat but for slightly different reasons. Don Imus made a horrible remark and deserved to be condemned for it. Yet as a society we missed a golden opportunity to learn and grow from this. And the whole thing played out with depressing predictability. It seems to me that nothing better illustrates how as a nation we have come to rely on extremism in our leadership rather than wisdom. Don Imus made a sincere apology to everyone affected by his remark. Racism itself would have been the looser had he been given the chance to put the intent of that apology into practice. But no. The extremists called for his head and no one dared to cross them. So now we are further polarized. How depressing...

and the beat goes on.....
and we sit back and take it. Who is the culprit here? It is the main stream media, without whom the two most racist people in America, Sharpton and Jackson, would not have a voice.

The media has apparently invoked a new standard in America. Where is the outrage and the demands that rappers and hip hoppers recording deals are canceled. It won't happen because the media hos aren't going to tell us it needs to happen.

For their part, the basketball team could have just let it go and given Imus's remark the attention it deserved and not allowed this incident to detract from their athletic accomplishments. However, that would have required class and would have denied them their 15 minutes of fame and their claim on victimhood.

Now that Sharpton is America's defacto moral compass, what will be the next directive for his sycophants in the MSM? Who will be next?

By the way, Don Imus has done more good in the world than the combined efforts of all the participants in his lynching.

Perhaps the real problem
is that the Culture of Personal Attack is so widespread that calling one old white guy on the carpet for an uncalled-for slander is like putting a Band-Aid on a festering cancer sore and expecting it to be healed. If we hold Imus accountable for his language, then we must be ready to hold everyone else accountable who has made use of similar insults and slanders. If he is to be held accountable for insulting people who don't deserve it, we have to be ready to call for the "hanging" of all those ignorant Duke profs who condemned the Lacrosse players before the evidence was in. We'd have more people to condemn than we can count.

The Culture of Personal Attack is so much bigger than Imus that it's almost funny -- or it would be, if it weren't so tragic. It has made inroads into our private sphere, as parents raise (or don't raise) their children to think that insults are "funny" and that there is no line between attacking someone's ideas/viewpoints and attacking someone personally.

I had a student who flunked my class because he only answered half the questions on his final exam, and of the questions he answered, he got only three right. (This was on top of the F he made on his midterm exam and the 0s he made on most of his quizzes.) I had tried to help this young man; I had rescheduled his final exam after he told me that due to personal issues (which he explained to me but I will not divulge here) he had not been able to study for it. But after he flunked the final so badly, without any bolstering high grades from earlier in the semester, I had no choice but to record an F for him. About a month later I saw this young man as I was walking from one building to another. I greeted him. In response, he looked firmly at the ground, scowled, and muttered, "B----." I was so taken aback by this -- I had never had a student cuss me to my face -- that I couldn't reply.

It took me weeks to get over this insult from someone I tried to help, so I guess I can understand how the Rutgers girls feel and can't be too hard on them for not simply "brushing off" Imus's attack.

But Imus, along with this student of mine, is not the disease; he is a SYMPTOM. If we center our blame on him alone, we're not solving the problem. We're only making ourselves feel better by the old Biblical technique of scapegoating: Blame Someone Else. It's Someone Else's Fault. (This is the same thing my student did; he could not assume responsibility for his own failure and saw fit to make it All My Fault.)

Nobody really learns anything, or solves anything, through scapegoating. Instead, we need to take a long, hard look at the Culture of Personal Attack itself -- what lies at its root, and what can be done to counteract it.

We have no right to not be offended
I humbly respect the basketball team’s right to be offended.

I humbly respect sincere and dedicated men of God preaching the word of salvation, Rev Al and brother Jesse’s right to be offended.

I am happy that the team was able to get their 15 minutes of fame and get some TV time.

I am disappointed that Imus went to the team and Rev Al begging forgiveness for something that requires nor deserves forgiveness because he has engaged in this rhetoric his entire career.

I hope folks will respect my right to be offended, be it folks explaining to me that 6 Italians holding hands in a circle is a dope ring or that seagulls have wings to beat the ginnies to the dump. Or my other side that has produced so few lawyers because they have trouble passing a bar.

In fact I support everybody’s right to be offended, what I don’t support is folks demanding that they have some implied Constitutional right to not be offended and want thought police everywhere to exact punishment.

I happened to be offended by old people and young people, people of normal weight, fat, and skinny, people with hair and without, with eye glasses and without, in fact I’m offended by everybody and I think I should have them all punished, it is my Constitutional right not to be offended.

If folks want to use the N word, ho, ginnies, wetbacks, on and on and the public is willing to support that as clearly they are, then fine. I personally won’t listen to that trash, because I actually have a right to choose not to listen and a right to be offended if I want to listen.

Shame on CBS & MSNBC
These phoneys took Imus off the air before (MSNBC) & in the middle of (CBS) Imus' telethon to help cure SIDS & help kids with cancer. What were these people thinking??? For 18 years the man raised millions for these causes. Thanks so much revs for getting him off the air, and shame on you CBS & MSNBC for bowing to the alter of blackmailing phoney hucksters. BTW, go to WFAN's website to make a donation. I doubt Jessie or Al ever gave a penny to causes like these.

Sensible comments . . .
What Imus said was wrong. He admitted it and made an apology. The young women on the Rutgers team did not deserve it. But they should be mature enough to both realize that whatever ANYBODY says about them does not change what they are. The infinite celebration of victimhood, constantly embellished by hypocrites like Reverend (a spurious term in his case) Al Sharpton does not help raise either the morality or cultural level in our country.

It is a shame that African Americans, who have had the short end of the stick in American history in many ways, do not have better leaders than Sharpton and Jesse jackson. I don't know a lot about Obama yet, but he sounds a lot better than the two I just mentioned. Another sad thing about the leadership of Sharpton and Jackson is that the Democrat party bows worshipfully in their direction for one reason: THEY DELIVER VOTES! When will African Americans realize that the Democrat party is using them?

Don Imus
Don Imus got a raw deal that was brought on by himself in two ways.
1. He mistakinly used words that he thought were made acceptable by the Rap community and didn't realize that certain words are the property of the black community only.

2. He apologized ad-infinitum and cow-towed to Al Sharpton on his (Sharptons) radio show. He acted like someone who had performed a mortal sin. Consequently everyone else(media), picked up on this and crucified him.

At this point all one can say is "Watch out in the future and Sharpton and Jackson have been strengthened.

What would be great is if Imus could land on satellite radio and be a counter-balnce to H. Stern on the other satellite radio network.
This venue driven by subscribers and not necessarily advertisers would make a great place for Imus future.

Legal System of Bull
Imus is gone, what about Al "Towona Brawley" or Jesse (I wanna have a baby jackson)or Ted (the murderer Kennedy)or Rosie (I am proof that fire cannot melt steel) Odonnel?????????????
I will believe we have a justice system and not just a legal game playing system when these corrections are made.
Move the trial to Brentwood, not LA, you all know what I mean.
Using a 3 X 5 card to file Jesse Jacksons taxes when I cant is a disgrace by the IRS=govt.
Charge Burger with the same jail sentence we would get for breaking into the national archeives.

I never watched Imus. Now the politically correct will try and lynch anyone who "dosent think like we do"! Dangerous philosophy isnt it?

Lynched by the worst offenders
Okay folks, you got what you wanted - another white person off the entertainment stage. No doubt Imus was an insensitive moron...but does that surprise anyone that's a regular listener for 25 years or the leaders of CBS and MSNBC. Sure it was okay when the stations reaped the Imus rewards somewhere near $30 million a year...but bailed out on him when pressure came from the lynch mob called "black activists". They created the storm that drove the advertisers away, and I'm wondering if they communicated with individual advertisers to warn them that they'd be sitting on their doorsteps if they didn't remove their support for the shows.

There's a dangerous precident being set-up out there in America today. It's the thumping of bias "do-gooders" the same ones that have more skeletons in their closets than clothes in mine. Bend over folks because the race-baiting has just begun - just let one word from a white person fall out of line and you'll get it in the "can".

Wasn't is Jackson that was strong-arming major corporations to support his "coalition" with huge sums of money and create roles for blacks? Wasn't is Jesse that fathered an illigimate child and was most likely making monthly child support payment through his Rainbow/Push Coalition funds? Wasn't is Jesee who admitted that he spit in white people's food? Supported Farachan and his anti-semetic rederick? Created his own little "hymie-town" rants. Still, the community let's him roll on unabbbated.

And then there's his buddy Big Al. Another man of virtue. Race-baiter supreme and self-appointed media darling. He searches like an a bat-at-night for any anti-white agenda to jump on. His radar is on 24/7 for the next white person to slip up so he can pounce. His "no peace, no justice" slogan and signs are ready in the drop of a hat. Too bad that the mass media has forgotten his past, his lies and jump to judgement against any white person.

There's a double standard for sure. Let's see how quickly Jesse and Al will meet with the hip-hop crowd to sensor their nasty talk...about their own kind...or do they get a pass because is "black-on-black" chatter? Remember when that culture was signing songs of killing police and white people...anybody say that was unethical?

There are great people on the radio and TV today, and unfortunitly they too have to measure every word from now on. Freedom of speech is a one-sided track now...one word out of place and the "boys" will be marching outside your studio and calling your sponsors.

Just when ya think the country may have made some racial progress, there's one small incident that gets blown out of proportion, and blam you're back to the '60's. Race-baiter are the worse kind of humans because they hide in the bushes waiting to pounce with a microphone, bullhorn, and their good friends in the media with poison words. AND, WE GIVE IN TO THEM AGAIN...AND AGAIN...AND AGAIN.

T-shirts
I am going to make a t-shirt that says "Al, Hilary and Jesse are nappy headed hos" Go, Imus.
These people are nothing more than hyopcrites with a htirst for power who will say or do anything to anyone to get it. And, sadly, winning.

Imus was stupid to
go on bended knee to sharpton of all people. I guess he figured "rev" al would cover his butt after he kicked it a little to pander to HIS audience. But ole al threw him to the wolves and now has the power thanks to the corporate fools who fired Imus, to get anyone fired with whom they disagree. PC has become the tool we all feared it would become. Imus should have sent the ladies flowers and told sharpton et al to get bent. The blacks need to clean their own house before they start telling us how to act in ours.

double standard
In Australia ,9 yrs ago , our leftist contender for the job of Prime Minister (Mark Latham)called a female right leaning journalist a Ho , in parliament.
No one in the leftist media objected in any way at the offense ??!!
The media are a sad lot .

Sharpton Empire Grows.
“Sharpton In The Morning” To Replace Imus
Tuesday, April 10, 2007 6:48 AM

BUSINESS NEWS:

NEW YORK – Just hours after radio talk show host Don Imus was killed in a tragic fire at his MSNBC Studios office, The Reverend Al Sharpton has stepped forward as a replacement host for the show. “I’ve always admired the audience share ‘The I-Man’ carried and would be proud to take over the ‘I-Microphone’”, Sharpton said.

In addition to picking up the Imus radio show, a spokesman for Sharpton Management, Inc. (SHAM) announced that effective immediately the former Imus Ranch will become The Sharpton Ranch.

Sharpton Management, Inc. also owns Sharpton Suit Rentals, Sharpton Fashion Mart (f.k.a. Freddie’s Fashion Mart) and the Molotov Cocktails chain of drive through liquor stores.

Shares of SHAM (Nasdaq) traded up 2.75 at $17.25 on the news of the recent acquisitions.

Hi Hustler
Revs. Sharpton and Jackson and their likes ALWAYS come out of the woodwork at times like this. Sadly, it was handed to them on a plate and Imus, if he had an ounce of common sense, should have known what would happen.

Are you really mad
""We know of no spectacle so ridiculous as the British public in one of its periodic fits of morality," said Lord Macaulay. Unfortunately, Macauley never saw the likes of the Revs. Sharpton and Jackson." We might add and the rest of us. Why do we tolerate indeed. So...

Move away from your keyboards, open a window and shout, 'I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!

One-for-all, all-for-one;
There seems to be a sense of "It's ok for us, but not for you", among the right-wing press/blogs/comments about how Imus has been treated.

...or just two-faced

Where were these same people when Jim Zumbo had his 40-year career destroyed because of his hunting/assault weapon statement. His crawling, shamefull apology** was not in the least accepted by those today who are whining/grunting/spitting because the apology of Imus has not been accepted.

So guys... if you willin' ta give it, ya gotta be willin' ta take it.

** one such blog commenting on the apology is:

Pat--that's why I admire you--sometimes
I like your lines:

"And lest we forget, these are athletes in their prime, the same age as young women in Iraq. They are not 5-year-old girls, and they are capable of brushing off an ignorant comment by a talk-show host who does not know them, or anything about them."

I have said that before. These young women should just take it easy, accept the apology and move on.

I have heard that the young women said saying that those words have "destroyed" their moral...come on, that actually shows your level of quality.

If you cannot even take those words, how can you face the real life, which is much tougher?

I wonder what do sportsmen/women need these days to win games.

Only strong physics?

If you do not see that this Imus flap is simply the first step of the loony left, led by liars like Sharpton and Jackson, in going after all talk radio, by re-instituting the fairness doctrine, so that the left does not have to hear people like Limbaugh, et al skewer them daily, then you are not paying attention. If the left can listen to people like Rosie O'Donnell in her rants and insults to G.W. Bush and anyone in the Republican party, evangelical Christians, etc., and not equally apply the venom they have to Don Imus to her, then they are nothing but liars and fools. If the Fairness Doctrine is ever reinstituted, we will have lost the freedom to hear both sides of the political story. All should pray that never happens.

Imus lynch party
Dear Pat, you are right. I'll miss the Imus show and your appearances on it. Where I come from if a man makes a mistake, acknowledges it, and apologizes for it ,than he is forgiven and we move on. This is not about Black or White, just what is right and wrong. What's next? A public execution! Joe Whiting

I think you're missing the point
Because Imus' remarks were racists, many on both sides of the issue have reacted through the prism of their own feelings about racial issue.

I think what touched a cord here is that Imus' remarks were more than racist, they were just plain mean for the sake of being mean.

Ultimately this is about decency not race or political correctness.

He was hung out to dry
This whole thing was assinine. Yes, he made a mistake. He apologized. It was clear that he meant it. After he met and did the same with the women he insulted, it should have been OVER.

I am so sick of seeing Al and the Jessuh act all high and mighty and pass judgement on someone else. Especially with all the skeletons in their own closets. It's a good thing they do not speak for the majority of black people. When will our media stop acting like they do?

somthing I agree with you about. Your comment is right on.

The selective outrage is unbelievable. If you expect the two clowns Al & Jessie to apoligize for their comments in the Duke case, and their other actions, we have a long time to wait.

Where are the demos. by Al "Tawana" Sharpton, and Jessie "Hymietown" Jackson, on the constant rap music lyrics that are 100 times worse than what Imus said.

PC is what it's all about. Imus may have thought that his liberal buddies would cover for him but when PC is concerned all bets are off.
