What was the biggest suprise of Election Day?

If the Senate and House judiciary committees issue subpoenas for Karl Rove and other White House aides to testify to their roles in the firing of the eight U.S. attorneys, President Bush should defy the subpoenas. He should accept the contempt citations and fight it all the way to the Supreme Court.

Indeed, he has a duty to do so. For Bush is today the custodian of an office that is the subject of assault by a partisan and hostile Congress.

This is not about the incompetence of the Justice Department of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales or about any White House role in the firing of the eight -- whom President Bush had every right to fire.

This is about preserving and protecting the integrity of the institution of the presidency. It is about the right of America's head of state and head of government to receive the candid counsel of his most trusted advisers.

If White House assistants as close to a president as Karl Rove is to George W. Bush can be ordered before congressional partisans, to be interrogated by congressional committees on what he may have told the president on controversial matters, the presidency itself will be damaged and weakened.

What is the matter with so many journalists that they cannot see or understand the principle at stake? Is their contempt for Bush so great they cannot see the need for executive privilege? Indeed, the hypocrisy on the part of some in the press is so manifest as to make them look absurdly partisan.

We just passed through a criminal investigation by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald of the alleged outing of a CIA agent, an investigation the press demanded. Yet journalists were outraged that Judith Miller of The New York Times and Matt Cooper of Time were subpoenaed and forced to testify to a U.S. grand jury in that criminal investigation. To defend reporter's privilege, Miller spent months in jail, rather than testify to what a single White House aide told her.

Can journalists credibly argue for an absolute shield law that protects their right never to have to reveal -- even before a federal grand jury that is investigating potential crimes against national security -- what Karl Rove told them, but President Bush has no right at all to protect what Rove told him from a partisan congressional committee?

Congress, too, is being manifestly hypocritical.

When $90,000 was discovered in the freezer of Rep. William Jefferson, the Justice Department went to a federal judge for a subpoena, so the FBI could enter Jefferson's office, where agents removed files related to a corruption investigation. Yet members of Congress were outraged at this executive intrusion in their sacrosanct domain. Continued...

Ben - re. Accountability
I agree with you wholeheartedly.

All these townhall meetings are a waste. We're so hypocritical to be politically correct -- we have lost our way.

The Republicans loved it when they had control of the Senate, House and Executive Branch. There were no longer any checks and balances. Now that the Democrats have the opportunity to question and verify, the Repubicans want to holler "Fowl!" The author of this article is a hypocrite, and an insult to the citizens of the USA.

This country is so far removed from God, there's no way to get it back on track. We pray the Lord come soon. The policiticans sold their seats to the lobbyists in hopes of contributions to their campaign coffers, and our country has been sold off by bits and pieces to foreigners. I feel bad for our children and grandchildren. Some of us remember a quieter, gentler nation where neighbors looked after each other, you didn't have to lock your doors. Little folks could walk to the store and buy bread and milk to help mom and dad. They didn't demand an allowance to do their chores. The family shared responsibility -- daddy went to work, mom baked, sewed, kept house and children, and they went to church or temple on Sunday or Shabbat. When there was a tragedy, neighbor and community pitched in. School was a place to learn, and prayer and Bible reading in the morning set the atmosphere for the day ahead. Bullies were disciplined. Children weren't allowed to be disrespectful to grown-ups. You didn't walk across other people's yards or tear up someone else's property. If you did, you had to apologize and make amends. There were no exceptions. You cheated in school, you flunked the test.

Now 90% of college students admit to cheating; alcohol is the norm.

Those cheaters enter the workforce and some enter politics.

We're so far removed from the commandments of God, there's no return.

President Bush, V.P. Cheney, and U.S. Attorney General Gonzales are not above the law, Mr. Buchanan. They are citizens first and took an oath to uphold the law and the Constitution of the United States of America. The Lord holds them accountable and we have the same right. They were put in positions of trust and to be held accountable is tantamount to dictatorship. President Bush too often says .. 'cause I say so.

There's too many Nimrods in the world today.

The Republicans had full control of the House, Senate and Executive Branch. Not too much ever got accomplished, except pork barrel politics, and getting us into a war we cannot win for a people who are cruel and intolerant of others -- a civil war between religious factions -- of which we cannot accept -- kill the infidels (all non-muslims). We're there because of the oil and two oilmen out of the White House and manipulation of the facts that got us into the mess.

Things will never be right until the Lord comes to set up His kingdom. We're stuck here waiting 'til He comes. The high and mighty will try to hide when that day comes!

Phil Byler
Phil, let's be honest here. You, like most liberals, believe in a BIG federal government. Pat, on the other hand, believes in a limited Constitutional government, like most of the founding fathers.

As far as foreign policy is concerned, you are an interventionist, while Pat is a non-interventionist. You apparently buy into the idea that it is a great idea to use our military to enforce UN sanctions and be the globo-cop for international companies. Pat does not. Quite frankly, Phil, I am having a very difficult time finding support for using our military in the fashion you desire, anywhere in the Constitution. Could you direct me to the clause?
