Is Putin being set up?

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

PARIS -- Whoever poisoned Alexander Litvinenko had two goals: a long and lingering death for the KGB defector and pointing a finger of accusation for his killing right in the face of Vladimir Putin.

Which leads me to believe Putin had nothing to do with it.

In an assassination, one must ask: Cui bono? To whose benefit? Who would gain from the poisoning of Litvinenko?

Certainly not Putin. Litvinenko's death puts him, the Kremlin and the KGB, now the FSB, under suspicion of having reverted to the terror tactics of Stalin, who commissioned killers to liquidate enemies like Leon Trotsky, murdered in Mexico in 1940.

What benefit could Putin conceivably realize from the London killing of an enemy of his regime, who had just become a British citizen? Why would the Russian president, at the peak of his popularity, with his regime awash in oil revenue and himself playing a strong hand in world politics, risk a breach with every Western nation by ordering the public murder of a man who was more of a nuisance than a threat to his regime?

Litvinenko, after all, made his sensational charges against the Kremlin -- that the KGB blew up the Moscow apartment buildings, not Chechen terrorists, as a casus belli for a war on Chechnya and that he had refused a KGB order to assassinate oligarch Boris Berezovsky -- in the late 1990s. Of late, Litvinenko has been regarded as a less and less credible figure, with his charges of KGB involvement in 9-11 and complicity in the Danish cartoons mocking Muhammad that ignited the Muslim firestorm.

Yet, listening to some Western pundits on the BBC and Fox News, one would think Putin himself poisoned Litvinenko. Who else, they ask, could have acquired polonium 210, the rare radioactive substance used to kill Litvinenko? Who else had the motive to eliminate the ex-agent who had dedicated his life to exposing the crimes of the Kremlin?

Indeed, no sooner had Litvinenko expired than his collaborator in anti-Putin politics, Alex Goldfarb, was in front of the television cameras reading Litvinenko's deathbed statement charging Putin with murder:

"You may succeed in silencing one man, but the howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr. Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life. ... You may succeed in silencing me, but that silence comes at a price. You have shown yourself to be as barbaric and ruthless as your most hostile critics have claimed."

Litvinenko's statement is awfully coherent and eloquent for a man writhing in a death agony. But if he did not write it, who did? All of which leads me to conclude Putin is being set up, framed for a crime he did not commit. But then, if Putin did not order the killing, who did?

Who else could have acquired the polonium 210? Who else would kill Litvinenko to make Putin a pariah? These are the questions Scotland Yard, which also seems skeptical that Putin had a hand in this bizarre business, has begun to ask.

As the predictable effect of Litvinenko's death has been to put a cloud of suspicion over Putin and a chill over Russian relations with the West, one must ask: To whose benefit is the discrediting of Putin? Who would seek a renewal of the Cold War?

Certainly, the oligarchs and robber barons like Berezovsky -- many of them now dispossessed of the wealth they amassed in a collapsing Soviet Union, and all of whom have been run out of the country or imprisoned -- have the most powerful of motives. They hate Putin and seek to bring him down. And Goldfarb and Litvinenko both enjoyed the patronage of the billionaire Berezovsky.

Surely, rogue or retired KGB agents, passed over by Putin and bitter at Litvinenko, would have a motive: to send a message, written in polonium 210, that this is what happens to those who betray us and Mother Russia.

Scotland Yard has yet to declare this a murder case and is looking into the possibility of a "martyrdom operation" -- suicide dressed up like murder -- in which Litvinenko may have colluded. The Putin-dominated Russian press is pushing this line, as well as the idea of an oligarchs' plot to discredit Putin and destroy Russia's relations with the West.

Yet Litvinenko was still in his early 40s, with a wife and two children. While his agonizing public death would make him a celebrity even more famous than Georgi Markov, the Bulgarian anti-communist murdered in London in 1979 with a poison-tipped umbrella, Litvinenko would not be around to enjoy his fame.

America has a vital interest in this Scotland Yard investigation. What it discovers may tell us more about the character of the man into whose eyes George Bush claimed to have stared, and seen his soul, or it may tell us who the real enemies of this country are, who are out to restart the Cold War, and perhaps another hot one.

Shear Speculation
I don't know why Pat would bother to write this column. Not one of his better efforts.

In a world
that insists on being confused about who killed Kennedy, we are to torment ourselves over the aracana of Kremlin intrigues?

The fundamental flaw in B's reasoning is that he presumes Putin is rational and has his arrogance under control. I have no reason to doubt either, specifically. But in general, I believe I am no longer capable of surprise, at the stupidity of the princes of this world.

If Putin planned this, he counted on the Buchanans of the world to argue in just this way. If Putin did not plan it, whoever did will have either wanted or not wanted Putin to be blamed. And Putin is and is not blamed.

The fact is that L is dead. That is want somebody wanted. If war is politics by other means, what is assassination? Politics by other other means. L is dead. The rest of it is just politics as usual.

Assassination: two asses, an I, and a nation. Ah! I see it all, now. It's so clear. A conspiracy wrapped in a plot inside a machination. Yes. Yesssss.

Pat Buchannon
is an anti-Semite who has a deep seated grudge against Israel. This article is nothing except a clumsy effort to absolve Putin. Does Bucannon think that Putin gives a rat's patootie whether people think he did this?

Vladimire is openly eliminating any obstacle to his power. He spits in Bush's face at every opportunity. He sells weapons to Iran, and has cozy relationships with enemies of America all over the globe.

He also knows that there is little chance that it could be proven that he was responsible for this. Now I concede that my view does not have to an accurate one. Neither does Pat Buchannon's.

Skip get a grip
Unreality taken to new heights. How does anti-semetism get into this article?

This is anti-buchanism gone to seed.

Putin's soul.
This article will certainly exorcise the Buchanan-haters, perhaps working them into a frothy frenzy. I don't know to what extent Putin has gone after the criminal element that unfortunately has come to dominate the Russian economy. Maybe he is an enabler, or maybe he is its biggest foe.
At any rate, if Litvinenko did assert the KGB or the Kremlin was involved in the 9/11 attack, then that is the stuff of lunacy. Where is his evidence?
In my modest opinion, Putin is nothing more than a nationalist who will do whatever benefits Mother Russia. He may be amoral. He's trying to destabilize former USSR republics as they seek closer ties with the West. But, to be frank, we have placed military bases close to Russia, which I am sure he views as a threat. And we do frequently lecture Putin on "democracy". Perhaps he ought to lecture us on our immigration policy vis-vis Mexico.
At any rate, Russia means to be a player on the world stage, and reclaim its former glory. But it can't sustain the loss of indigenous Russians. They are dying off, not populating. Its Muslim population is, unfortunately. There is much about current Russian foreign policy that is very troubling, but we need to work with the Russians, when we can, in our mutual battle with Islamist extremists. And I can't work up much sympathy for radical Chechnyan Muslims, who often do resort to terror.

Skip..
How could an "anti-semitic" support a Marxist? About as rational a thought as Pat's column.

I believe that Pat is on to something.
I do not believe that Mr. Buchannan is an anti-semite. I believe that this is a very valid point. Who really stands to gain the most from Litvenenko's death. Certainly not Putin. If he wanted to off someone, it would be fast will a bullet or if by poison, Cyanide. He would want this guy silent and dead, not a talking dead man. It stinks like dead fish to me!

Yo Pat
It must have been a Putin clone that went to the Duma just before the G8 conference and got them to pass two laws: the first one sanctioning political assassinations for those who speak unkindly about the leadership of Russia. The second defined what qualifies as grounds for assassination, which lowered the bar from previous criteria for critics to receive attention from the government for their dissent.

Pat, you've got to do a better job of cloaking your anti-semitism than Putin has done of hiding his fear of dissent.

Good Article
Really makes you think. Things do not add up for sure... unless that was part of the plan however unlikly.

When In Doubt, Blame the Jews! Re>merryg
Give me a break. Yeah, I heard Mossad also did 9/11, manipulated us into Iraq and Afghanistan, transports heroin into the U.S. and to top it off they eat christian babies. In reference to the original article, it is very easy to see how Putin benefits from having his political enemies brutally murdered under unprovable but obvious circumstances, it scares the bejeezus out of his domestic critics. Let us not forget that recently the anti-Putin journalist Anna Politkovskaya was murdered under suspicious circumstances, news outlets have been shut down, NGOs shut out and that the FSB is suspected of giving Victor Yushchenko his lovely new dioxin-scarred face. Cui Buono is a good saw, but so to is "all truth does not lie at the bottom of a well". I take Buchannan's basic point that we should not needlessly antagonize Russia over her internal affairs, but neither should we blind ourselves to their reality.

Look into His Eyes

.....Pat...

.....Maybe we should tell Bush to look into Putin's soul and tell us what he sees?.....COLOSSUS

Big Deal
Maybe I'm simple and easily confused, but it doesn't seem that long ago to me that we were all in favor of more dead Russians.

Don't quit your day job Pat
You could never make it as a cop Pat. You think it, therefore it's so. Is that the way it goes. Your reasons don't even pass the smell test of being logical or having motive. As far as the martyrdom operation, give me a break. Litvinenko's death is another form of suicide bombing, only in another form is that right. I suppose he wanted to go through all that pain, knowing he's leaving a family behind just because he wants to get back at Putin. Litvinenko was a professional man. I'm sure he could have found more important issues way before his death to be a martyr, to put better suspicion on Putin. Try not to sound like Jimmy Carter and his love for communist leaders.

Long on speculation, short on facts
Pat disappoints me more in nearly every article. As was pointed out earlier, this event did not occur in a vacuum. The history and events leading to this are long and fairly well documented. Michael Ledeen's article in NRO yesterday(http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZGYyMTI3Mjc0ZDE4OTM3ZmY5ZGE5OTM0Y2RhZTI4MDc=), while using his odd imaginary conversations with Angelton refers to the 11 July London Times' letter column, which addresses the legal underpinning to Putin's new methods of dealing with dissidents around the world. In NRO today, Ion Mihai Pacepa has an article that I find a shade more thoughtful and informed than Pat's offering today. In any event, there have been a slew of folks killed in very public ways that all have one thing in common: they oppose Vladimir Putin. If one suggests that those other than the Kremlin is perpetrating these acts (like the ever popular scapegoat, the Mossad, or the Mafia, or others) I'm sure Putin lifted his glass high, said a toast, and ordered the thank you notes be prepared.

Why?
Good question Patrick. Why WOULD Vladimir kill 13 journalists, poison a dissident and attempt to murder a candidate for the presidency of the Ukraine? Same reason a dog licks his balls....because he can! Just what would you do about it anyway? Nothing.
Lest anyone worry, the writers whose columns appear here on Townhall can sleep at night safe in their little beds knowing that the drivel they scribble is not a threat to anyone.

anti-socialist:
You ask me "How could an anti-Semiitic support a Marxiist?"

Are you serious? You never heard of the anti-Semitism in the USSR? In the Marxist USSR? Where did you go to school? Did they teach history there?

Skip
What was Karl Marx - a Gentile?

(When speaking of anti-Semitism, are you refering to the entire Semite race? Many, when refering to anti-Semitism, exclude the largest "sect" of the Semites - the Asians, along with many of the other smaller sects).)

Putin Set-Up
Exactly what I was thinking. Whoever planned this knew that the cause of death would become well-known and the knee-jerk reaction of many people in the West would be to blame the KGB and Putin. It is unfortunate and dangerous that so many on both the left and right are so hostile to Russians. Every anti-Russian cause or issue is uncritically accepted and held against them. I don't think the cold war ever stopped for many intllectuals, politicos, and the chattering class in the West (and not a few in Russia as well). When will we began to treat Russia as a young democracy (albeit with quite a few blemishes) but still as a normal country? And for God's sake, what does anti-semitism have to do with this other than among yet other conspiracy-mongerers?

Skip bases
His accusation of hate toward Jewish People of Mr. Buchannan based on lamenting the power and influence of the Jewish lobby on American Foreign policy.

Wow. How low to accuses someone of hate because they lament anothers political influence.?

You need a swift kick, pal.

Why do Ed and others seem to think
conspiracy theorists rule the day with this assassination? We see the more distant history of Russian activities such as assassination, as well as the more current history of a president who is a former KGB colonel who has been systematically dismantling democracy in Russia, not to mention socializing industry. All of those killed were high value targets for Putin, and the cherry on top is that this is indirectly projecting the image that Mother Russia is resurgent and potent again. It takes a real leap of faith to disregard these things and suggest that others had more to gain.

Political Assinations
Unfortunately, there are individuals in the United States who might attempt to silence a critic, especially someone who was once an insider. Domestic Organizations which come to mind are various elements of organized crime. Usually, it is to take care of a rival or traitor in their own organization. Sometimes just a vocal outsider is enough to provoke action.

It remains a possibility that government officials in other countries besides Russia or England might have similar motives towards individuals who make them uneasy or angry. It is one good reason for having turnover in elected office and putting the opposition in power for a time, then changing the majority again, and again. However, the voters can not influence the bureaucracy. Bureaucrats outlive all elected officials and are the ones who actually run the Federal government.

That may be true, but
I find it unconvincing, especially given the disparate backgrounds of the victims It would seem that at some point the number of victims who are also Putin enemies would either reduce the probability of outside influences beyond reasonable doubt, or increase the probability close to certainty that Putin is actually heading the mob.

It ought be a crime
but it isn't to accuse guilty until proved so.

Polonium 210 / Internet Sales
Polonium 210 is used in anti-static brushes, mostly in photography. Internet sales are available in the USA (for very small amounts)from three retailers.

Mr Litvinenko had a trip planned to Israel as banking advocate for Boris Berezovsky. I suggest that the same people who helped Robert Maxwell fall off his boat may have a part in this. Israel's banking system has to become open if it wishes to take the higher moral ground. The state's laundering of cash is not helping.

The KGB has not knocked off as many people as people would like to think because it does not bring a benefit.
