Will Congress pass Obamacare by the end of the year?

Like all such scandals, the matter of Mark Foley and his lurid valentines to congressional pages is instructive for what it reveals, and not just about Foley, but about his party, its leaders and us.

Having checked in to "rehab," after it was revealed that he had written salacious e-mails and instant messages to pages, Foley shoved his lawyer out front to say he was an alcoholic, gay and had been abused by a clergyman as a boy.

What is Foley up to?

Rather than speak directly to the charge against him -- that he is a homosexual with the hots for teenage boys -- Foley's lawyer is entering a plea, in the court of public opinion, of diminished capacity.

Foley is portraying himself not as a sexual predator out to pick up boys, an unappealing figure, but a victim of compulsive forces over which he had no control and for which he cannot be held accountable.

Call it the Larry King-Oprah defense. Even as he takes "full responsibility" for his lewd and lascivious conduct, his lawyer implies he didn't know what he was doing. The e-mails and IMs were sent in an alcoholic-induced stupor -- between votes on the House floor

Will it work? Perhaps. The shamed and shunned Foley will appear increasingly as a figure of interest, and then of sympathy, in our forgiving society. Offers of six-figure book advances are probably in the mail.

What does the episode say about Speaker Hastert and the GOP? Surely, it speaks poorly of their executive decisiveness, though, thus far, it does not speak all that badly of them as human beings. Continued...

It would solve all your problems

A modest proposal: Republicans should begin drafting legislation that would outlaw homosexuality, making all homosexual acts violations of federal criminal law. This way you can deal with the gay marriage issue and all other areas in which gays are active, once and for all.

If conservative Republicans look within themselves, they will find that they have no compelling reason not to undertake the course I've suggested. They do not do so only because they are needlessly worried about their image in the liberal media. Get past that temporary road-block and the path is wide open.

There is one big problem, however. If homosexuality is outlawed, what will you have to talk about?

OH MY GOSH!
One would think that this whole issue just popped up. Give me a break! Washington has been aware of a potential problem since at least 1996 (Clinton's administration?). Now, can anybody recall who was where during that time? who was the Speaker of the House? Who was in the know and didn't say anything? Please! And, there are more homosexuals hiding in the cabinet. And, what can be done about it? Damned if you do; damned if you don't. NAMBA, Gay Pride Marches, gay marriages, gay couples adopting babies, pornography. Just the very thought that Free Speech allows perverts to publish magazines on gay love makes me laugh. What does the nation expect? And, lets not forget the ACLU and the AU. It's one for all and one for me. Democrats, Republican, Libertarians, Independents, Muslim, Hindus, Christian, Atheists. The point is that no one is serious about anything if it means taking a stand that might change the way you live your life. Our attitude is "I'm with you all the way, but don't ask me to do or say anything". We're stunned by the horrible news, but we get over it real quick. Short attention spans. And plenty of scavengers to take advantage of it. End of my story: We're too lazy to care enough to stand up against evil. Foley? That's our fault. We need to accept the responsiblity and make the necessary changes. For our future.
