Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"Whatever mistakes have been made in Iraq, the worst mistake would be to think that if we pulled out, the terrorists would leave us alone. They will not leave us alone. They will follow us. The safety of America depends on the outcome of the battle in the streets of Baghdad."

President Bush, speaking on 9/11, had a point. Even some who believe the invasion of Iraq to have been a strategic blunder concede that, if Americans head for the exit ramp, the consequences could be catastrophic. Terrorists could wind up with a safe haven in western Iraq not unlike Osama bin Laden's old base camp in Afghanistan pre-9/11.

The other potential consequences? The breakup of Iraq, a Shia-Sunni bloodbath spreading across the Middle East, the massacre of the men and women who cast their lot with America, a Turkish invasion of Kurdistan, an Islamic perception the United States had been routed and a Shia-dominated Iraq under the influence of Iran.

This would be a strategic disaster that would demoralize our few remaining friends in the region and embolden our enemies. It would be a victory for bin Laden, al-Qaida and Islamists greater than the expulsion of the Soviet Union from Afghanistan.

Yet, according to the senior Marine intelligence officer in Iraq, Anbar -- the Sunni province that is 30 percent of the country, contains Ramadi and Fallujah, and borders on Jordan and Syria -- is virtually lost. Local governments have collapsed, the national government has no presence, U.S. forces are unable to conduct extensive operations.

Every American must hope that Bush's goals, an Afghanistan and an Iraq that are democratic, pro-American and enlisted in the cause of fighting terror, are attained. But we have reached a point where rhetoric must be set aside and realities faced: We face a real prospect of defeat in both wars.

But if we are to prevent that, how many more troops, casualties and hundreds of billions of dollars, for how many years, will victory require? Are we willing to pay the price? And if we are unwilling -- November may give us the answer -- are we prepared for the consequences of a U.S. defeat in either or both nations?

Make no mistake: U.S. forces are not in any imminent danger of being defeated or driven out. But in both countries, the situation is at its worst since U.S. forces went in, and deteriorating, though we have spent five years in Afghanistan and more years in Iraq than we needed to crush Hitler. Pistol, thanks for the conversation
Moral points do not make a difference to those who want to win no matter what. Hunkering down to crudeness (i.e. viewing everything as winners versus losers) is not smart, as their are many more perspectives, such as evil states versus criminals, and on and on. Your attitude exudes that you feel that cannot make a difference, or rather than you do not want to make a difference, and that you would be content to be enslaved by a group different from your own. I think you are too smart for that, and our country needs critical thinkers, especially moral ones.

Peace and justice are intertwined.

We capitulated to Israel on every issue, no matter how murderous, and at the same time, extremists in morality and brutality took control of Israel. That is not a good combination.

It is odd that we live in a world where George Soros, a billionaire Jew with access to truth, can compare Israel to Nazi Germany, and a prominent American Jew, Norman Mailer, has observed:
“[the Israelis have] lost any hard-earned and elevated objectivity, any high and disinterested search for social value … Now, they treat the Palestinians as if the Palestinians were ghetto Jews. It is one of the great ironies … I think there is a … inner crisis in Israel. I think they are ready to say: We are no longer humanists. We’ve become the opposite of ourselves.” Prominent NYC Jews can call Sharon a mass murderer and war criminal at the same time the world chokes when Bush calls him a "man of peace."

You may not know that Israel had an assassination policy for a dozen years or so from the late 1980s forward, until fairly recently, in which they killed potential Palestinian leaders (whether by intelligence, personality or education or whatnot) and murdered approximately 20,000 (often at rate of 3 to 5 a day). That acknowledgement is implicitly in Speaker Burg's speech. Our media did not disclose this very often (acknowledged on back pages when it ended), but to the contrary, our media mocked the appearance of Palestinian leaders. How would you city's representative appear if your top 20 to 25,000 leaders had been assassinated? [And in 2003, Sharon announced that he feels free to kill enemies of Israel anywhere, including in the United States. UPI, Jan. 15, 2003.] You act as though you do not care; that this does not matter. This is as bad as anything Hilter ever did. I really do not believe that you would ignore the horror of that reality if it set in.

The most economical course to peace are consideration of Crimes against Humanity against those who deserved it. Many feel that the Palestinians deserve the same rights that Jews championed for blacks in South Africa and elsewhere.

The hypocrisy was thick when our politicians said they invaded Iraqi to shut down Hussain’s torture chambers, but well concealed as our government and media would never reveal Israeli torture except in a positive light. In 1999, Ehad Barak, shortly before his election as Prime Minister of Israel, was asked what he would have done if he had been born a Palestinian, and he candidly responded: “I would have joined a terrorist organization.” Israel has a war against terrorism, but Palestine has a war against occupation.

The principles of Christianity support the view of former Senator Hollings: In the Mideast, terrorism is a separate problem to be defeated by diplomacy and negotiation, not militarily. Here, might does not make right ---right makes might.” ; The Post and Courier, Charleston, S.C., May 6, 2004.

Thanks for the conversation, and good luck to you. I enjoyed it and encourage you to continue the search for whatever you feel is right.

Khokar
Thank you for extending my sophistication in dealing with the Middle Eastern mindset. Let's see:
American Jews destroyed the WTC so Moslems would be blamed.
President Reagan blew up the Marine barracks in Lebanon so he would have an excuse to return the surviving Marines home.
Hesbollah blew up half of Beirut so they could claim a propaganda victory as their triumphant military machine threw the cowardly and inept Israeli army out of Lebanon.
Islam is the foremost religion of Peace because if everybody embraced Islam there would be no more violence, except Sunni/Baathist/Shiite/sharia violence which doesn't count since no infidels are involved.
The USA has planted Bin Laden in some cave in Pakistan so they have a justification to spend billions of dollars in Iraq so they can justify all the oil they are stealing and shipping to the US in their secret under-ocean pipeline..oops. I hope i didn't give anything away when i outed the pipeline.
