Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

COPENHAGEN -- Here in Europe, there is little media coverage about North Korea's May 25 nuclear weapons test or its increasingly frequent ballistic missile launches. There is even less mention of Pyongyang's decision to sentence two American female journalists to "12 years of reform through hard labor" for "committing hostilities" and illegal entry. North Korea's flagrant violations of international law, repeated breaches of United Nations resolutions, rampant human rights abuses, wholesale currency counterfeiting, transnational kidnappings, threats of aggression and active state sponsorship of terrorism simply do not raise European ire. It wasn't always that way.

Fifty-nine years ago this month, the North Korean People's Army smashed across the 38th parallel, capturing Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea. The battered South Korean army and its U.S. military advisers quickly were pushed into the "Pusan Perimeter," on the southern tip of the peninsula, and President Harry Truman took the case to the United Nations Security Council.

*** Special Offer ***

American leadership and the absence of the Soviet ambassador resulted in swift passage of Security Council Resolution 84. The measure -- perhaps the last time in history that the U.N. acted with dispatch -- authorized the use of force against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. During the bloody three-year war that followed, troops from seven European countries -- and 10 others from around the world -- fought beside U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines in Korea, finally securing an armistice July 27, 1953.

In the years since, the increasingly isolated patriarchal-Stalinist regime in Pyongyang has raised visceral hatred of the United States to the level of a new art form while systematically violating the terms of the armistice and virtually every other agreement to which it is a party. In short, Pyongyang's past behavior is a prelude to present and future conduct.

On Jan. 18, 1968, North Korean guerrillas attacked Seoul's presidential palace in an attempt to assassinate South Korean President Park Chung-hee. President Lyndon Johnson dispatched Cyrus Vance to discourage the South Koreans -- with troops already committed in Vietnam -- from undertaking a military response. Vance's mission was a "success," and no action -- other than a strongly worded diplomatic note -- was taken against Pyongyang.

Five days later, the USS Pueblo -- a small, unarmed U.S. Navy surveillance vessel -- was seized in international waters by North Korean patrol boats. Cmdr. Lloyd "Pete" Bucher and the 81 surviving members of the Pueblo's crew were beaten and tortured by their captors while the Johnson administration in Washington, enmeshed in micromanaging the war in Vietnam, dithered. Finally, after a year of brutality -- and being threatened that one member of his crew would be shot, starting with the youngest, each day -- Bucher signed a concocted "confession." The North Koreans promptly repatriated the crew and kept the Pueblo, which they use as propaganda to this day.

The unwillingness to deal forcefully with the North Korean regime in 1968 set a precedent from which neither the West in general nor the U.S. in particular ever has recovered. North Korean leaders, emboldened by the West's flaccid response, stepped up their campaign of terror. Intelligence operatives and military units dispatched by Pyongyang have kidnapped hundreds of South Korean and Japanese mariners, fishermen and even civilian women and children. North Korean terrorists have made no fewer than three additional attempts to assassinate South Korean leaders. One of them, a 1983 bombing in Rangoon, killed 17 diplomats and members of South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan's security detail. In 1987, a bomb placed aboard Korean Airlines Flight 858 killed all 115 aboard, including four Americans.

Over the course of the two decades since, little has changed except that North Korea has acquired nuclear weapons and the means of delivering them. In 1994, after North Korea's "Great Leader," Kim Il Sung, died of a heart attack at the age of 82, the Clinton administration opened the door to direct negotiations with his son and successor, Kim Jong Il. An "Agreed Framework" for dismantling North Korea's nuclear weapons program was negotiated, and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright went to Pyongyang to dance at the anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea. She famously proclaimed a "new beginning" for U.S. relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Like father, like son; the dictators played us for suckers. Neither the Clinton administration's initiatives nor those of his successor, President George W. Bush, produced any of the promised "breakthroughs" with Pyongyang. The Bush administration went so far as to remove the despots in Pyongyang from the U.S.' list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Despite Western deliveries of massive amounts of humanitarian food aid and fuel oil to ease starvation, the North Koreans accelerated their nuclear and ballistic weapons programs, while the West vacillated. Now the Obama administration is repeating the same mistakes. And Mr. Obama -- having vowed to "meet without preconditions" with brutal despots, such as Kim Jong Il -- runs the grave risk of making things even worse.

The capture of journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee by a North Korean patrol along the China-North Korea border March 17 provided Pyongyang with two new "bargaining chips" for avoiding stronger sanctions -- and restarting stalled "six-party talks" with the U.S., Russia, China, Japan and South Korea. The harsh sentence meted out to the two women from Al Gore's Current TV operation is sure to expedite the opening of yet another "diplomatic initiative" -- just what Pyongyang wants. But if Mr. Obama thinks that he can appease the outlaws in Pyongyang with an iPod or even a two-volume DVD collection of Hollywood's best movies, he is mistaken.

Two Journalists
Imagine for a moment if John McCain would have won the lection and did nothing to get these two journalists back from the clutches of the NORKs....just like Obama is doing now.

The Liberal outcry of victimization and injustice, the cold-blooded uncaring monster of a man that the president would be framed as....the horror of inaction while these two innocent girls endured the worst treatment ever know to man (even worse than GITMO!).

So...where's all the noise from the New York Times (the paper of record)....surely ONE columnist would have questioned Obama about just exactly what he's doing to help these two?!?

Instead, Obama gets the all-day free pass.

The NORKs have backed Obama into a corner, they're not going to relent until they force him to act.

If he had any balls he would have blown the first missile out of the sky with a single shot from the USS John S. McCain patroling in the Sea of Japan, but nooooo, not the all-seeing messiah, he knows best.

God only knows what kind of mess we're going to be in soon....I wonder if the NYTimes could get away with not printing a story about the nuclear destruction of Seoul....cause I think we're going to find out.

North Korea is still at war

North Korea recently rescinded its peace agreement and has said it is still at war. That should be information enough for the rest of the world to grok.

I am increasingly concerned about the world's exploding population and the wars that our children will experience as nations fight for remaining resources of food, water, and energy sources.

North Korea is just one of the nations for America to watch out for.

The world is full of humans, and many of us are just plain crazy.

I agree with Joel's summary comments. pro-active is much better for America than re-active.

If we're not part of the solution, we will have become part of the problem.

When governments act
as if the avoidance of war is their highest priority, war is inevitable.

Joel NV Jun 12, 2009 - 8:00 AM EST

Joel,

You said:
"If the ENTIRE world was operating under the govt and economy that the Founding Fathers intended for America, there would be plenty of food and energy for everyone alive on the Earth now, times 5 or 10."

I'd be quite happy if we Americans operated under a government and economy that the Founding Fathers intended for America.

We need to practice what we preach first, you know... lead from the front. Then we can teach the rest of the world by example.

As it is, our current progressive culture and its government is rapidly taking us down the road to fascist hell. We have to fix ourselves before we can fix the rest of the world.

But I know you and I agree on the idea of restoring America to its founding roots and lawful, constitutional government.

Ollie
"...The unwillingness to deal forcefully with the North Korean regime in 1968 set a precedent from which neither the West in general nor the U.S. in particular ever has recovered..."

Really you mean even as bad as the failed Bush regime letting them manufacture a large number of nukes while failed bushites played mine is bigger than yours? I think not.

Do you really think the issue of N Korea is serious enough to go to war with your kids and grand kids? N Korea supposedly had nukes and a missile to reach the US and therefore the failed Buhsh left them alone. Iran saw this and saw that the Bush regime threatened Iran with a two front war from Iraq and Afghanistan. Iran ramped up a nuclear weapon program; can you blame them? Now how does the west unwind the whole mess. Lesson over.

Hal Donahue PA Jun 12, 2009 - 8:46 AM ES

I disagree. The lesson of the past have been ignored, so this generation will have to re-live the same mistakes made by earlier generations.

Dogs learn faster than some humans.

Ok Ollie...
You accuse Obama of 'appeasement' but don't suggest any concrete solutions.

Well Col North
You wrote correctly "American leadership and the absence of the Soviet ambassador resulted in swift passage of Security Council Resolution 84. The measure--perhaps the last time in history that the U.N. acted with dispatch--authorized the use of force against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."

Corrections: drop the word "perhaps", and add "and at all voted to do the right thing" after "dispatch".

More comments: it was certainly egregious that LBJ didn't deal with this rogue state with apt force, and it did encourage them. They were certainly more emboldened (even than during Bubba's time) by 0bama's February visit (holding almsbowl, which not even Dhimmi Carter did) to Ottawa.

As 0bama is an outlaw (of "soft" variety, somewhat like Gerry Adams without the dubious "good points") himself, having been elected by the corrupt Chicago Mob Political Machine as their hench-POTUS, it is obvious that one cannot expect any apt dealings with DPRK.

Still Ollie
You don't need to prove it, Ollie. It's a well-known fact that North Korea is an unstable state with an even more unstable dictator and the way it has been handled leaves plenty of room for improvement. But still, hawkish rehtoric does more harm than good as Iraq has proven many times over. Add to that, you still have pretty much no credibility when it comes to these mattes.

Again, why aren't you in jail?

Hal -
Your Bush derangement syndrome is peeking out again. A little balance would make you more believable.

Can't disagree that Bush didn't make any real impact on beating the North Koreans back into a non-threatening mode of behavior. Then again -
as you well know, Clinton and his Sec. of State Maddy Albright did as little as anyone to factually rein in the North Korean "Gargoyle Family". They had eight years - just like Bush "the terrible". Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagon( the hallowed remnant), Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2 ( the Gawd awful ) nor Obama/Soetero ( the Anointed ); to date none of them have come up with any answers, that might fix the little red wagon of the "Gargoyle Family".

If you have the answer - please send it to the Big "O" and get him out of a spot. I'm pretty sure I don't have enough serious Intel data to second guess anyone on the issue.

At any rate - The strategy to date, nor the tactics, for dealing with the North Koreans have changed much, as far as results are concerned - regardless of which of the two useless political Party myrmidons, the American people have depended on to find some correct answer to the problem. Results are the only coin that spends by the way.

War should be the least palatable option; as you said - our grandchildren would be the soldiers expected to pay that bill. Unfortunately - changing the past is not an option. That leaves us with few options going forward, other than ensuring that the U.S. can project an overwhelming, factual deterrence towards the North Korean "Gargoyle" of the moment. And the determination to use that deterrence should there be no other choice. Any other option leaves our grandchildren at risk of destruction, by men even more insane than our own U.S. politicians. That's a scary thought - huh?

Dwain Cleveland

And yet Liberals support the U.N.

The U.N.'s record is dismal. Still Liberals support the U.N. ignoring pain and suffer around the Globe. Liberals support the U.N. not standing up to dictators, Liberals support the U.N. standing by while Genocide takes place. Liberals support the corruption at the U.N. with money for social programs going into the pockets of corrupt officials.

I don't know which is worse, The U.N. or the Liberals who support it.

Stop the release of torture photos
Call Speaker Pelosi today to protest any release of the torture photos that she has manipulated by taking it out of the military funding bill. She insisted the provision to keep torture photos sealed be removed from the safety of the bill. Call her and protest this act of treason today!! But since she hailed illegal immigrants as "true patriots" when she spoke in San Francisco, well you can see what her mind set is. Is harming our soldiers an additional part of her liberal "true patriotism" philosophy?

and his complaints about the failed Bush regime is hilarious.

It's only taken 4 1/2 months for this administration to fail at almost everything they have done. Ruining the economy, starting hyper-inflation, nationalizing certain industries, dictating what contracts people can enter and at what price.

The only things the Oawful administration have done right is get out of the way of the Navy SEALs (took too long, but they finally did) and keep the interrogation pictures classified.

Other than that, not one durn thing has worked, but will bankrupt us and future generations.

We are at the point now where we can never repay the national debt. Thanks, Democrats. You've finally managed to steal the American Dream and barter it for votes.

Actually, Ollie is not in jail because he didn't violate any laws.

However, many people who watch MSNBC agree with you.

Useful Idiots
Never said Col. North violated any Laws. He did however end up "In Contempt" of the doofus Congressional Committeee that tried to hang him out to dry and could have been, erroneously in my view, charged on that particular count. "In Contempt of Congress" descibes most of the intellectually functional Americans around these days. As I stated in the first post - that "Contempt" charge didn't go anywhere due to political expediency. Enuf folks decided that particular charge was not worth pushing into a serious fight. At least that is how I read the Congressional Record of the issue. If I mis-interpreted something in the Record or missed something, feel free to give me a shove in the right direction. I should have made a more detailed statement on the issue.

And please, don't stick me in with the bunch that thinks MSNBC is a news channel.

Oliver North has earned the accolades and the thanks of all Americans for his service to this country. Any imputation otherwise, by my previous post, was a failure to parse my wording appropriately.
My apology, in that event, is to Col. North.

(*) few groats are incorrupt (I can name three, all Canucks)
(*) UN was created on intitative of a groat POTUS who refused to learn from the dismal failure of its predecessor (created on intiative of an earlier groat POTUS, but which US never joined) LN (Lame Numpties).

Wrong! The reason Ollie is not in jail is because the ACLU helped get his FELONY CONVICTIONS thrown out on legal technicalities. There is no question he violated his oath and dishonored himself and the USMC

Ollie, regarding criminals...

Perhaps you can start looking at the outlaws in our own government, starting with the White House, and working your way to the Congress. Look for individuals operating outside the limits imposed by the U.S. Constitution. That's where we need help.

Should be an easy job to do - the criminals are everywhere. I haven't figured why the FBI and the Justice Department haven't done this job already.

So far, only the People and a few courageous attorneys have taken shots at resolving the criminal behavior in our federal government.

If we don't stop the lawlessness within our own country, you and the rest of the military will find yourselves defending a communist country.

Is that something you want to do?

Hal
Judge Gesell dismissed all charges against North on September 16, 1991, on the motion of the independent counsel.
Had there been a concrete case against him, ACLU or not - he would not have walked away from the charges. Col. North played the game by the standard rules of the U.S. governments military/political culture, that by the way hasn't changed since, - and he won the roll of the dice.
Your opinion of the situation is your opinion and has no relevance to anyone but yourself. Oliver North probably sits up nites worried about what you think of him. I know I do. Well -not really.
All General Staff Level Military Officers are Politicians, by the very nature of their positions. Politicians by nature have unduly flexible sensibilities and an immense capacity to compartmentalize, as is required to do the bidding of their superior Officers and political Bosses. Oliver North was the public scapegoat for a Government plan that was initiated far above his pay-grade. People from way high up, in both political Partys, were intimately involved in the operation that ensued. That's the way those things are done in Washington - and you know that. Beating North up on this issue is like kicking the tires on a truck with a bad transmission. Passing motorists find you amusing.
Government expects it's "Oliver Norths" to take the hit if required and to hell with all else. It's just another dance step in the "Foggy Bottom Waltz". The Staff Level Military establishment expects it as well; you know that. For decades now, Government has been, by its culture, a criminal enterprise only nominally held in check by any honorable intent or design.
Unless the Code Duello is re-instated as an absolute governor of bad behavior - it probably will remain a criminal enterprise. But, that's just my opinion.

Dwain Cleveland

May we have peace please? AKA bootkiss
Slowly we feel a garrote being pulled around our neck This “Obama Peace Extension” is a film-flam of tactics. The new and dangerous administration is coding to outline projects at the White House. (Obama speak)
• Peace = we over extend our self offering a peace accord, that will be used to leverage us for money.
• Openness to negotiate without preconditions = Keep expectation low so you don’t get disappointed. Then spin outcome using the “Obama Media LLC” to show how good and safe we are eating crow.
• Miranda = Interruption of solders not Cops mission. This act will kill more solders while they are reading writes in the red zone.
• Jobs = More Government workers and CZARS who add no value. You are on your own private sector
• Cap and Trade = TAX
How many times do we take it from rogue nations? Peace is great with peaceful nations, but never at the expense or safety of the American public.

I think we have waited long enough for this Junior president to get up to speed, PLAY BALL

The current Administration doesn't have time or interest in waging war against the enemies of our country.

Unfortunately the size of the Government of thugs is growing nearly as fast as the Obama debt.

Soldier to Captured Islamic Terrorist:
--------------------------------------

Sir, You have the right to remain silent or, if you want, shout Allahu Akbar in a maniacal voice.

Anything you say will be used against the United States by left-wing radical groups and the mainstream media.

You have the right to use an ACLU attorney in bringing a frivolous lawsuit against the American government.

If you cannot afford an attorney, the American taxpayers whom you haven't yet killed, will pay for one.

If you do not understand these rights, you will be given a chance to sue us later for your failure to do so.

Our Commander in Chief, Barack Obama, wants us to make sure you get back into the Combat Zone as soon as possible - be patient and work with us and you should be killing us or planting IED's by tomorrow.

May we get you a cup of Hot Tea or a Koran while you wait for your release on your own 'Recognizance'?

If you are ever in America, stop by your local ACORN office and register to vote for Barack Obama.

One of the reasons JSM lost is deep down these limp-wrists could not identify with that level of service and sacrifice for ones country, they therefore voted for someone who they COULD identify with...a wuss who won't protect either the country or the constitution on which it was built.
As the grandfather of a US Marine and father of another, I say Semper-FI to Ollie and all my shipmates who hold this country dear and I fear for the young patriots who have to endure this feckless communist as Cinc.

Obama and 'The Polishing of the Turds'

The legacy of Barack Obama will be written in History as 'The Polishing of the Turds'.

The expression (polishing turds) is used mostly in the Software Industry and means to make a piece of poorly written and virtually unfixable software appear to function by giving it a 'Smart' and Pleasant user interface.

You may have noticed that Barack Obama uses the word 'Solve' quite often.

Obama states he will 'Solve' the Education crisis.

Obama states he will 'Solve' the Economy crisis.

Obama states he will 'Solve' the Islamic Terrorist crisis.

Obama states he will 'Solve' the Health Care crisis.

Obama uses his 'Toothy Smile' and 'Teleprompter Words', in an attempt to 'Polish Turds' that have never worked or never will.

Totalitarian Indoctrination of children in Government Schools, like the Vladimir Lenin 'Turd', “Give us the child for 8 years and it will be a Bolshevik (Marxist/Communist) forever”, is 'Shined Up' and called 'Social Justice'.

Nationalizations of Major American Industries, is 'Shined Up' from the Marxist/Socialist 'Turd' and called 'Saving and Creating Jobs'.

The 'Turd' of Islamic Jihad (which promises death and destruction), is 'Shined Up' and called 'Mutual Acceptance' and 'Working Together'.

The 'Socialized Health Care Turd' is 'Shined Up' and called 'ObamaCare for All'.

When Barack Obama asks his followers, 'Will You Polish these Turds' - they Chant in unison 'Yes We Can'.

As one of those who wore the uniform and who does care about the troops, we know loss of character when they see it. Ollie failed the nation, the corps and himself when he violated his oath. I prefer leaders whose first worry is the mission and the men. Ollie failed both counts

Hal
If you cared about the troops, you would never have supported a know nothing fool like Il Duce. Anyone with an ounce of common sense, especially an ex military type would have seen this clown for what he is.

We are in a war, you don't elect someone who states that he will "stand with the muslims" when they are the enemy.

Ollie never violated anything and you know it.

He's oh so concerned about a baby murderer getting his own late term abortion, but nothing about Pvt Long because his killer is a black muslim..God forbid he upsets his base.

I don't know what branch you served in, if you did, but you sure didn't learn much and I doubt your troops had much confidence in you as a leader, I sure as hell don't.

Nothing Is Ever Settled
In World War II Japan, Germany Italy and their allies were completely defeated. Today they are peaceful, prosperous and non-aggressive.

That was the last time a major conflict was ended by a through defeat of one side by another. Since then we have had negotiated truces, deals, cease-fires, pull-outs, third party guarantees, and insertions of peace keepers. Virtually no conflict has been firmly settled and most continue to seethe.

Beside Korea, we see these ongoing conflicts between India and Pakistan, the Balkans, the Middle East, several Central and South American guerilla and drug wars, the "war on terror," Iraq, and almost all of Africa.

Our leaders need to man-up and lead us to a decisive victory the next time we are challenged. Of course he will have to down face the hand wringing, booger eating media and the left. I do not know that such a strong, decisive leader exists today.

Charles makes an excellant point in #34
One only has to look at the 2 Koreas's...the South is modern and prosperous, the North a total disaster.
Perhaps we should send our own "dear leader" to meet with the North Koreans so he can see the reults of what he envisions here at home. Of course, it'd be cheaper to send him to Cuba, the results are the same.

We are the big dog and should act like it instead of all the PC garbage which only serves to get good people killed. There is no moral relativism when you're dealing with lunatics.

If that nutjob in N Korea wants nukes, we should send him a few courtesy of one of our missile subs, the same for Iran and anyone else who threatens the world.....some collateral damage has to be accepted rather than see 60 or more million killed for nothing.

Give then 10 days to give up their nuke ambitions and open up for inspections or evacuate your capitol.

You wanna know all about Hal D Ask Gunny
and Ann PA..they give him no quarter.

A symbol, the black ribbon.
Its time to raise our heads high and show our disdain for the current administration of "That man in the white house". Display a symbol of this disdain, wear a black ribbon to show your support of the American way and a disdain for the liberal direction currently occurring from "That Man".

Appeasing Outlaws
What can one say? McArthur was right, Truman was wrong.

The Real Hal D, PA
Hal D is actuality, Rep John Murtha, also from PA. Or at least his clone. Both jerks. Col North is a true hero. Continues to be. The Dems with the Boland Resolution were/still are traitors. No better than Benedict Arnold, except at least Benedict Arnold did some good before flipping tote other side.
