Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- During the presidential campaign, then-Sen. Barack Obama famously said he was willing to meet "without preconditions" with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea. It was a pledge that he repeated -- with minor modifications -- throughout his campaign, and it never failed to bring forth enthusiastic applause. Last November, the voters endorsed the approach and handed him a sweeping victory. But that commitment -- like his oft-repeated promise to close Gitmo -- may prove to be our undoing.

Unfortunately for us, it wasn't just idealistic American voters who were listening to Mr. Obama's naive campaign rhetoric. So, too, were our adversaries. And now, little more than four months into his administration, it should be apparent that his grip-and-grin "I like you, and you should like me" approach to foreign policy is a potential disaster.

This week's North Korean nuclear test and flurry of ballistic missile launches should not be viewed in isolation. It is but the most recent indicator that the O-Team is out of touch with the increasingly dangerous realities of a new world disorder. Despite a string of increasingly ominous events, the Obama administration appears intent on pursuing a Rodney King "can we all get along?" national security policy.

In early February, Moscow replied to Mr. Obama's offer to "reboot" the U.S.-Russia relationship by stiffing us on a key logistics base for our troops in Afghanistan. In response, the O-Team agreed to pay exorbitant fees to ship nonlethal supplies through Russian-controlled territory for NATO troops fighting in the shadow of the Hindu Kush.

During the first week of March, military aircraft and patrol boats of the People's Liberation Army Navy forced the USNS Impeccable -- an unarmed oceanographic survey ship -- to withdraw from international waters 75 miles off the coast of Hainan Island, which is a major Chinese naval and submarine base in the South China Sea. The O-Team meekly acquiesced and promised a "diplomatic resolution." It has not worked. On May 1, little noted by the so-called mainstream media, the USNS Victorious was harassed by Chinese vessels more than 180 miles off the Chinese coast.

On April 5, the North Koreans launched a 2,000-mile-range Taepodong-2 intercontinental ballistic missile over Japan. The O-Team referred the matter to the toothless United Nations Security Council. There, Chinese and Russian emissaries, brandishing veto threats, warned against "punitive" sanctions. They are babbling about the same things now.

On April 18, Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez replied to the Obama magic with a photo-op presentation of a virulently anti-American screed at the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad. Flush with success, Chavez returned to Caracas, offered more visas and passports to Hezbollah and Hamas terrorists, and increased arms shipments to narco-insurgents in Colombia and Mexico.

The O-Team proffer of "quiet discussions" with the Taliban has yielded a spring "jihad," which threatens to overwhelm the Pakistani army and put Islamabad's nuclear arsenal at risk. In Mesopotamia, the "date certain" withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from Iraqi cities has precipitated a spike in grisly suicide bombings and the highest American casualty counts in more than a year.

On March 20, in a "video message" to the people of Iran, Mr. Obama offered Tehran "a new beginning" and stated, "My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us." Secretary of State Hillary Clinton followed up April 8, promising that the U.S. would be a "full participant" with Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China in renewed talks with the Iranians on that "full range of issues."

The Iranian response to these "new openings" should have been instructive. On May 20, just hours after an Oval Office meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the ayatollahs replied to Mr. Obama's "outstretched hand" and offers of face-to-face bilateral meetings by launching a 1,200-mile-range, solid fuel Sajjil-2 ICBM. Five days later, Iran rejected further talks with anyone regarding its nuclear program.

This week's detonation of a nuclear device near the North Korea-Russia border -- not to mention the ripple-fire launches of ballistic missiles and Pyongyang's subsequent abrogation of the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War -- is much more than just the test of an atomic weapon. It is a test of how the West in general -- and the U.S. in particular -- will respond. Every genocidal despot is watching -- especially those ruling Iran.

Short of a military attack, there are few things left in our quiver to deter the North Koreans and Iranians from developing and deploying nuclear weapons. That does not mean nothing can be done.

Mr. Obama said again this week that his most important responsibility is "protecting the American people." If that's true, he ought to announce immediately that no company doing business of any kind with North Korea or Iran will be allowed to do business in the United States. Second, he should ask Congress to reinstate the funding for homeland ballistic missile defense he cut out of the fiscal year 2010 defense budget. Third, he should expedite the installation of ballistic missile defense radars and interceptors in Europe. Doing less is a formula for disaster.

Great summary Ollie

Great summary of obamalamadingdong's ineptitude when it comes to the handling of foreign affairs, proving once again never to elect a boy to do a man's job. And all this in just a little over 100 days.

I doubt any of this would be happening on McCain's watch.

I'm Shocked!
Being nice doesn't work? Oh well.

"Oh well" will be the Left's response to the failure to move countries such as North Korea and Iran in a less belligerent direction. Their intention was to move them and that's good enough for the likes Of Obama. Reality is irrelevant for the Democrats. Unfortunately it's also that way for most Republicans. At least those in politics.

Here's what Dem diplomacy gets you!

AMERICA'S GREATEST EMBARRASSMENT
Burt Prelutsky in this fine article: "A Little Straight Talk" has given us the very best reason for resisting world opinion and keeping the terror jail at Gitmo open: The world is a much greater embarrassment to itself than Gitmo is for America.

The world that is allowing the terror masters of Iran to go nuclear and become the hegemon of the Middle East threatening control of the oil rich Persian Gulf and Israel with extinction; the world which sits back while North Korea explodes a nuclear device, tears up its armistice and threatens a resumption of war; such a world cannot sit in judgment over the US. In reality, America's greatest and most shameful embarrassment isn't Gitmo, waterboarding or Abu Ghraib, it's a "yes we can" administration that has joined an impotent no we can't world as the nations lose their guts and moral bearings and drift toward the horrors of genocide and war.

Cartoon President
It's a toss-up whether Obama's foreign policy gaffes will destroy his presidency before his domestic trillion dollar spending. I can't wait for the day when the Messiah is in a courtroom defending his disastrous domestic and foreign policies with his teleprompters on either side of the witness chair.

The day of reckoning may be sooner that we think. Let's hope because the hole that this Administration is digging is going take years for the American people to crawl out of.

Joe Biden is looking pretty good to me. Despite his gaffes I think he is a loyal American who is not in the skin game like the racist entourage now polluting the Capitol.

Oh my god...
You people are way too paranoid.

A telling statistic

Number of PRNK nukes set off on a dimwitcrat president's watch = 2

Number of PRNK nukes set off on a Republican president's watch = 0

Live and Learn
While these two clowns in Iran and N. Korea are serious threats, we do have to learn that we created them as well. We need to be careful not to make another despot in the future, which is what us imposing our military force on foreign soil is doing. Deploying missile defenses in Poland isn't defending America, it's defending Poland. If we can intercept missiles over the Pacific from the California coast, we can do the same from the Maryland coast.

Our first step to defusing these morons is to withdraw all overseas soldiers and put them where they actually defend America, Mexico's border. Then pull all foreign aid for anyone. They'll then just collapse under their own stupidity. It's hard to counter Kim Jong Il's or Hugo Chaves' rants when we do nothing more than prove them right.

It's only because they haven't met him
I'm sure the "Most Arrogant One" figures once they meet him face to face, their opinions will change. Let's face it, he fooled half of the voters who swooned at the sight of him. And oh, when he spoke (of course always with his beloved teleprompter), the worries of the world disappeared. He would 'save us,' he would in an instant, make the rest of the world love us and we would all live in perpetual peace. Our enemies will most certainly do the same, once they meet Him and talk to His Arrogance, it is inevitable, how could they possible resist his divine charms? The man is a buffoon who is clueless about the perils in this world. He is too ignorant to see that the people he 'hopes' to negotiate peace with want nothing more than for us to let our guard down, then destroy us. And Obama is heading us in that direction at warp speed, expecially now that he is going back to the Clinton methodology of controlling terrorism--treating it as a criminal problem. He is going to significnatly reduce the CIA's involvement and give more authority to the FBI and the Justice Dept. Can we say 'another 9/11' boys and girls? Maybe it is is ultimate plan, nothing else could rationally explain his actions IMO. It'll be sooner rather than later I'm afraid.

Not in Jail?
Astute observations Ollie, even if they are somewhat hawkish. You love to criticize, but seriously, what are the alternatives? Invade North Korea? Bomb Iran? We tried that with Iraq. It didn't work.

And seriously, why are you not in jail?

Corndog, check your facts.
In late October 2006, North Korea conducted it's first nuclear test. The last time I checked, a Republican was in office at that time.

Again, check your facts before making a statement like that.

Jack
Why is Mr. North not in jail?

Easy answer actually...he was just following orders....

;)

Oliver North speaking like Hitler?
Yes, if the Founding Fathers were to rise they would immediately be arrested Oliver North's order were they to speak up and for sure sent to Guantanamo to be waterboarded.

What has America ever done with these wise words: "Overgrown military establishmemts are under any form of government inauspciaous to liberty and are to be regarded as particularly hostile to Republican liberty". By George Washington.

This guy is so full of war garbage, who if my information is correct has never ever said a word as to how so corrutp things are right here at in America, where now for instance in additions to millions upon millions of illegals are here plus around 900,000 gang members where as indicated alos by the FBI during the last two years around 200,000 were added.

Oliver North do you even know where the US borders are and do you know about the laws of immigration? Those two issues completely abondened indeed hence the Towers came tumbling down, right? Yes, Mr. North Imperialism is what your mind is all about, while you think that a Hitler gun thing will do!

Yes, indeed America is here thanks to the brutal British Empire! The Founding Fathers told America never ever to return to Imperialism. Yet, the American war machinery now circles the globe! Nothing learned from the British stupidity, right?

Jason
Corndog, check your facts.

You are correct sir. Thank you for pointing that out. That is an embarassing gaffe. I confused it with the missile launches over Japan.

Also, thank you for showing me the error of my ways. You libtards have been right all along. We should all just roll over to the likes of 'Lil' kim, achmadinnerjacket, and hugo chavez. In fact, we should admit that we're under siege, take a page out of Jewish history and all 'Masada' ourselves......You first.

The failure of Town Hall
to screen criminals from their editorial staff.

Honestly, get this guy off these boards and give us some real thoughtful conservative commentary!

Corndog
Don't confuse we with someone who cares about either of the political arena.

Both the left and right are so full of bullshiit that it has ceased to be funny anymore. However, both sides do have good ideas about how things should be run, but ultimately will never be able to agree because of human stubbornness

That is what I am against: bullshiit. No matter where you place it, left or right. No matter what you paint on it, an elephant or donkey. Underneath, no matter what you call it...it's all bullshiit.

Jason

A very thoughtful post. I'm with you that there is a lot of BS in both camps.

So far,...
the throwing down of their gauntlets by the Iranians, North Koreans and others has not gotten a visible rise out of Obama, so I guess we'll have to wait and see what he does when they actually go upside his head. I'm afraid the only thing certain is that he will be all over the Israelis if they do something preemptive.

Tough talk doesn't get it done!
There wouldn't have to be any tough talk or any talk had America been allowed to win in the Korean conflict. Let's face it folks Korea took the lives of valuable American lives for what? so we can go back and do it again? If we had bombed Hanoi and Nuked them then there would be no now. It was a politician's war just like Viet Nam. A war for war mongers to make money and to heck with the lives it cost!
I value the lives more of Americans than I do foreigners. No I am not a peacenik and I don't believe in burning draft cards or the American Flag.
I love my fellow Americans but the politicians could care less. They sit behind their ivory desks and drink their booze while mothers weep over dead sons and husbands.
Think about it! North Korea has had time to build these weapons and more than likely will use them on someone. Had they been subdued when we had the chance (and we could have done it) they would be so far behind that it would take more than the 50 something years to build their weapons of mass destruction.
Someday if America survives, we will have to repeat the process with North Viet Nam.
If we're going to war let's do it right and quit fooling around. The only war I believe in is when the rabble try come to our shores and try to get us, then I believe in throwing at them everything we have nukes and all.
Those who don't learn from history will live to repeat it.

Whimp in the white house
I am neither a revolutionary, nor an activist but I am an American citizen who is extremely worried by the lack of leadership from the white house on national security. Do not misread this as ravel rouse; I do know that new managers seek council on issues that they are weak. This man thinks he is not week on anything and is plowing us into a very dangerous situation. We don't need band aides for the issues at stake; we do not need platitudes for power struggles. Korea, Iran, Israel, Iraq and Africa do not care what he thinks, they just want there’s and they see him as an easy target.

To HD
You raise an interesting point. Over about the last forty or fifty years we have had administrations that were very warlike and eager to go to war and some that were less so. But no matter how bellicose our administration, none of them has seemed eager to take on our domestic gangs, whose activity has grown geometrically in recent years. Everyone just seems to accept that gangs trafficking in drugs and guns, extorting legitimate businesses, controlling neighborhoods, scaring the people, and, hello, KILLING people, is normal daily business. Why so tolerant?

I live in Chicago. From what I read in the Tribune, if Dillinger and Capone were on the South Side today they would both wet their pants in fear. Little kids sitting on Grandma's porch eating ice cream get shot just about every day from the crossfire of shoot-outs. Why doesn't North turn some of his Killer-Diller expertise on the gangs?

To Joel
The argument for "eradicating Islam from the face of the earth" ignores the fact that Islam exists in earth's every nation. If you go shooting up mosques in Argentina and Australia and Abyssinia, you will soon find yourself at war with the entire rest of the globe. Google the words "islam by country" to see long lists of nations and what their Muslim presence is at present---Wikipedia has a useful table of data.

So I can think of only two ways to take your post: 1) You weren't aware of this and want time to reconsider or 2) You were aware and think it's a realistic goal to uproot by force or persuasion the Islamic religion in every place it has taken root---and the latter would seem to fit with your concept of an American empire. Which?

Grip and Grin Diplomacy?
What is grip and grin diplomacy? Does grip and grin refer to a handshake accompanied by a pleasant facial expression? What's the alternative, Chip on the Shoulder Diplomacy? Kick in the Shins Diplomacy? Shock and Awe Diplomacy, eg we bomb your city although you have not attacked us first just to scare hell out of you and show you we are boss diplomacy?

The question comes to, is there any legitimate place in the civilized world for traditional diplomacy (which involves quite a lot of grip-and-grin), or should all government and all international relations be in the hands not only of the military, which includes such as Colin Powell, but the Special Ops-Navy Seal-I will garrotte you before you know I'm here kind of military?

One point, two fools
First of all Lilly - it's not hard to surmise you're an idiot, but making it so damn easy by asking what, "Grip and grin diplomacy" is makes me feel like I'm beating up a retard.

Second, The chinese are simply acting rationally. Whenever a potential weakling is in charge of a country - you test them, and if they are indeed weaklings, you proceed to bully them at the diplomatic table.

No different then the beginning of the Soviet regime in Russia during WWII - the Germans demanded finland and portions of Poland from Russia, or else they would invade Russia proper. The Bolsheviks, having more backbone then our Kenyan "president" said no, but of course the Germans started marching toward Moscow and the Bolsheviks reconsidered.

I suspect if other countries are to behave rationally, they will behave in a manner similar to the Germans, and then Obama will most likely give in to their demands, as then he can somehow claim it was somehow a "wise" move inspired by his messianic intelligence, whereas a war or skirmish is more difficult to defend to his automaton followers...

U say "Tough Talk Doesn't Get it"!! My 1st thought was 'Another Nice, Feel good' but upon re-reading Ur posting a couple of times, I BASICALLY AGREE with much of what U say.
First, I'll Just say I'm very happy that our GI's are being treated decently by the Public as opposed to some parts of the US in the 60-70s.
I Missed most of the Korean War but spent almost 4 years in *The Nam* and surrounding Areas.
MacArthur's Obvious intent "to destroy the War-Making capability of China for Generations to Come" got him FIRED, Justifiably; The Prez IS IN CHARGE. We Didn't Fix THE TOTAL PROBLEM.
The Ground Trooprts took a Beatin', but NEVER REALLY Lost a single Major Campaign to my knowledge. LBJ's IDIOTIC "THEY CAN'T BOMB A Sh1T-HOUSE WITHOUT MY APPROVAL" Didn't do much for *Rules of Engagement*. The order was NOT FOLLOWED TO THE LETTER, but it HURT..
So, Yeah, WAR IS BAD AND EVIL SH!+. But Sometimes U gotta Fight 'em there--NOT HERE..
