Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- This past Wednesday, President Barack Obama chastised the U.S. Senate to get on with delivering an "economic stimulus package," saying that "failure to act, and act now, will turn a crisis into a catastrophe." Last week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Democratic colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives did their best -- and passed the largest spending bill in history without a single Republican vote. The unprecedented shoulder-to-shoulder stand by GOP members of the House alerted the American people to a disaster in the making. As a consequence, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid admits that he doesn't "have the votes" to pass an even more expensive measure in the Senate. Now what?

How about a dose of reality? Despite public opprobrium, some kind of tax-and-spend compromise eventually will pass and be signed into law. After all, politicians at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue want to show the American people that they "care." Ideally, real "economic stimulus" legislation should cut taxes as much as possible and spend as little borrowed money as possible on things that really will "stimulate" the U.S. economy.

Unfortunately, given the political alignment in Washington, it is unlikely that taxes will be cut enough, and inevitably there will be too much spending on the wrong priorities. However, there is one place where Republicans need to stand their ground: national defense.

Right now, neither the House's nor the Senate's version of the so-called "stimulus bill" contains any dollars for defense. It ought to stay that way because this "stimulus" legislation ought to focus like a laser on short-term measures, such as immediate tax cuts, that will expedite recovery in the civilian sector of our economy. But the Obama administration and their supporters on Capitol Hill need to understand that when it comes to spending, there are few things government can do that have a more immediate, positive effect on jobs and the overall economy than expenditures on national defense.

Ronald Reagan knew that. In his first 100 days in office, he took his arguments for cutting taxes and rebuilding the U.S. military -- including a 600-ship Navy -- to the American people. He convinced them -- and they, in turn, convinced the liberals running Capitol Hill -- that these measures were essential for the country. The result was a dramatic rebound in jobs and economic growth from the malaise and stagflation of the Carter years, and there also were significant improvements in the quality, capabilities and readiness of our armed forces.

Regrettably, this lesson appears to have been missed by Mr. Obama and his advisers. The administration has made it clear that they intend to cut defense spending -- even though we are at war -- despite the job losses it would entail. Just days before the inauguration, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel stated in televised interviews that "on an annual basis, we have about $300 billion in cost overruns" from the Defense Department. The interviewers on NBC and PBS failed to ask him to identify where he found these "overruns" in a $527 billion wartime budget. It apparently doesn't matter. This week, the Office of Management and Budget ordered the Pentagon to show how it can cut $55 billion from the fiscal year 2010 defense program.

To "stimulate" action in this direction, the Congressional Budget Office helpfully pointed out that "savings" of $18 billion could be "realized" by reversing Mr. Obama's pledge to increase the sizes of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps and instead cutting the number of Army combat brigades and reducing the Marines' end strength. The green-eyeshade gang at the CBO also pointed out that $2.1 billion could be "saved" by increasing health care charges for the dependents of military personnel. That should help morale.

Additional "savings" have been identified by others on Capitol Hill. Reps. Barney Frank and Barbara Lee have announced that they want to "trim" what they call "Cold War-era" weapons from the 2010 budget. Included in their "cut list" are the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter ($6.1 billion), the F/A-22 Raptor ($4.5 billion), the Marines' V-22 Osprey ($1.3 billion), the DDG-1000 destroyer ($3.5 billion) and the Army's Future Combat Systems ($3.7 billion).

Even though Iran succeeded in putting a satellite in orbit this week -- demonstrating the capability to launch nuclear-tipped ICBMs -- Rep. Frank persists in claiming that ballistic missile defense ($8.9 billion) is on the chopping block, as well, adding, "We don't need all these fancy new weapons."

In an increasingly dangerous world, in the midst of a war and serious global economic woes, this kind of thinking is lunacy. The Obama administration and their liberal allies on Capitol Hill need to set aside their deep-seated, pathological antipathy toward America's military and invest in the defense of this nation.

In the aftermath of the "Daschle Debacle," Mr. Obama acknowledged, "I screwed up." It is now time for him to make the same admission about his efforts to gut our defense budget. Spending more on defense -- not less -- is not only good for our economy but also good for all of us.

This is incredibly stupid

We don't need more weapons.
Money in health or education would be infinitely more beneficial.
It's unethical for us, as a country, to play arms-supplier to the world.

As to Douglas
The most common weapon in the world today is the AK-47. Sold by the former USSR and Eastern bloc countries

Korea,(Daewoo) Belgium (FN) Germany (H-K) Austria (Steyr), Israel (Uzi, Galil), France Britain export arms everywhere.

As usual Douglas has no idea what he is talking about. The former USSR is the largest supplier of arms to the world.

Typical ignorance of the parasitic academic emeritus elites.

Obama and the military
What a surprise, a Democrat who wants to cut the military. Like it or not this world is a dangerous place, like our enemies want us dead. Of course is makes perfect sense to trash our military. For pete sake wake up and grow up. We we don't need is one more braying jackass.

Hey Ranger Robbie
In case you show up in this thread I want to tell you that when I was at TAMU recently they were showing McHale's Navy in some of the classrooms and saying that we should all watch my hero, Ensign Parker, for examples of how not to conduct ourselves as officers of the United States Navy.

Isn't that cool??

Dr. Douglas & stupidity
Considering you wrote that your Oregon State University is too poor to hire teaching assistant, when the TAs are not only hired, they have their own bargaining units and university-wide awards -- you might want to avoid slinging the "stupidity" charge st otehrs, 'kay? Thanks. Appreciate it.

Yes, we are blessed
As the repeated posts by Dr. Doug show...

From reading the leftist posts here, I've concluded that every single TH leftist was a Rear Admiral in the Army, where they learned to fly B-52s off of the carrier USS Arizona while stationed at Camp Uzbekistan, thus providing them with patriotic and military bona fides till the end of time.

During their leaves, they earned Ph.Ds. in phrenology from Harvard, with post-graduate studies in astrology at MIT, which makes them expert in every field of science known to man or womyn.

After resigning their commissions in protest over the war-mongering of Dick Cheney, they became Inspector-Generals in the NYPD where they were the first persons in and the last out of both Twin Towers. Then they earned law degrees at Wassamatta U. and argued cases before the Supreme Court, the World Court, and the Court of Wimbledon.

For hobbies, they hold black belts in Ti Kwan Leep and Fung Ku, and tinker with the cold fusion reactors that power their green-cars.

We are truly blessed to have such savants among us. My only question is, how DO they find the time to post here?

Dr Douglas
What is the mental effects on a soldier who is in Iraq trying to stay alive and is told his family now has to pay more for healthcare and that the high-tech equipment that gives them an edge on the enemy is being cut so a professor who barely teaches and lies about whether his university hires and pays TA's can make more money doing nothing constructive.

Wimp-in-Chief
Put an anti-American, quasi-Marxist in the White House, thanks for a successful marketing strategy and this is what we get.

A pretentious, pontificating laywer, who cares more about others around the world, often our adversaries than he does about his number one priority - to preserve and protect the USA.

Impeach the Messiah.

And more village Idiots
Come out to say that there's no such thing as terrorism. Well, idiots, go on and get back under the rocks you came out from.

This Country has been safe and keeping your sorry assses safe, no matter what you thought of Bush. Are you really willing to throw it all away?
If Iran launching a satellite doesn't get through to you, I suppose nothing will-except of course, (God Forbid) a new attack on our soil.

Ditto Col. North
B. Hussein Obama, Queen Speaker Pelosi and Dirty Harry Reid, have no respect for the Armed Forces. They will try to cut the Military budget to re-direct the money to their LEFTIST special interest groups who demonize the United States for their actions to destroy Islamic terrorism.

Nee
If there is a new attack on the U.S., the idiot libs will just say it was America's fault for our imperialism, and support of the zionists. Anybody want to bet they won't admit it was their fault for dismanteling the programs we use to keep us safe, shutting Gitmo and feminizing and gutting the military.

Then again the "teflon man" can just say he screwed up and the press will ohh and ahh about his honesty and what a great president he is.

Pay for Play
The military does not traditionally vote for democrats and it actually serves a purpose intended for government which is defending this nation and keeping us secure. For these reasons, Frank and company are targeting it.

Almost everyone supports cutting waste and greater efficiency but the cuts you describe involves elimination of weapons and R&D programs important for defense of this nation. I guess they are diverting funds from national defense to ACORN and contraceptives. If our security was not at risk, this would be laughable.

Good go Col North
I keep getting these Emails of severely wounded veterans loosing their homes and not being able to feed their families and my heart falls.
If ever there is a time the nation needs to take a long look at itself, it is now. I believe it is dire and if we the people don't,take this look,[at ourselves] we are lost to the ages.
I have come to disbelieve any Politician, be they Democrat or Republican. Both today are liars and are on their own agenda. The Reps. should just vote NO on the bail out package. Don't mess with it. The Dems, may or may not pass it, but if they do, the results will be on their heads. A negative vote by the conservative Dems would also be a good idea. Any man/woman of constitutional truth should vote NO.

The Daschole Debacle should
Alert the public to the fact that this COUNTRY really screwed up last November 4th. It is way past time that conservatives wake up from their malaise and funk and start acting like citizens again. Get active! Hold Obama's feet to the fire! Get the message out - CONTINUOUSLY - (just like the demo's constantly put their "message" out).We can't wait for the next elections, we must become PROACTIVE!!!

BaO is poison!

TBC ~:>{)

Defense Cuts
There may be some room for cuts to the defense budget, but that's hard to explain when you're trying to stimulate the economy. Defense spending creates generally good paying, high tech jobs.

There has been talk about ending F-22 production at 183 aircraft. That might sense, you save a lot more shutting one program down than scaling back several.

What ever happened to the tanker program?

Dr. Doug
Screw your "unethical." If I remember, you teach some idiot subject that should know that there is no such thing as ethics; that ethics is subjective. Analyze these statements if you will:

Killing 1.5 million pre-born children a year is unethical.

It is unethical to teach sex education to first grade children.

It is unethical to shoot wolves from airplanes. (From the great ethicist, Ashley Judd). This is in spite fo the fact that there is an over-population of wolves threatening the Moose and Elk populations.
(Even though there is an over-population of

1-2-3 Socialist!
Serious, barney frank..."fancy weapons." That's one of the dumbest comments ever. It's worse than the Bushism's libs promoted daily on MSM.

Three steps to ruining democracy and capitalism to build Obamaland:
1. More government control. aka "stimulus"
2. Cut the military
3. Limit the media. aka the new "fairness standard" being discussed on socialist hill

Yes we can...tear down this country. Yes I can become the ruler!

Has voter remorse set in yet? If not now, it will.

Not so fast, lefty
Douglas, get a clue. More money in education? I presume for nit-wits like you? No way. Colleges and universities charge through-the-roof prices for a product that is worth less and less in the real world, yet you want more money? Good luck with that. The sooner our universities get a taste of economic reality, the better. They have gotten fat off government loan money, and should be put on a diet pronto. If that means less money for liberal-leftist mouthpieces such as yourself, so much the better. More money on public education? Negative, per pupil expenditures are way above what other, more effective nations spend, but the results we get are not. Want more money for the classroom, then cut administrative staff or abolish the DOE entirely.

Regarding cutting military spending, while there is some waste in the Pentagon budget, is it really wise to cut military spending during wartime? Oh, that's right - you lefties don't think we're at war, do you?

The biggest arms suppliers in the world are Russia, the PRC, and the EU, not the US. The two most popular weapons of the jihadists are RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades) and AK series assault rifles, both of which were designed and first produced in the USSR.

Doc Liberty 4:29 post
Sorry so late to the party. Loved your post - very, very funny. Thanks for the morning pick-me-up.

Great article, Mr. North. Nailed it on the head. We are in deep with this administration. Too bad we wont be able to change course in time to keep from going deeper into the abyss.

Georgia Boy 61
they seem to have forgotten about 9/11 or the burning flag videos or the shouts of death to America. Apparently all we have to do with people who hate us and our way of life consists of "I'm sorry" and "lets talk."

Thats the kind of thinking that people are excusing the terrorists at Gitmo. Giving them swirlies is BAD! Letting them out to kill our guys in another country is good. Our founding fathers would be pissed that all they fought for is now the country of, "I hope this doesn't offend them," and "we want the European socialist model." Might as well throw the largest porkulus bill in history to the mix to increase the craziness. We have Obamabots walking around like zombies with no thoughts except "change" wanting to bite us to spread this disease.
Jason - They never will have buyers remorse. They'll end up blaming Bush, as Obama did in his last speech, and the republicans. They never take responsibility.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20090206/pl_politico/18482

"I welcome this debate, but we are not going to get relief by turning back to the same policies that for the last eight years doubled the national debt and threw our economy into a tailspin,” said President Obama – sounding more like Candidate Obama than at any time since he took the oath of office less than a month ago.

Oliver
You sound like a "Punch Drunk Boxer",who has had one too many fights. We are saying to the WORLD,peace is our first priority. Then they see "US" increasing our defense spending. I know, Americans as a group, aren't that smart but surely we can do better than that. Hopefully,President Obama will cut defense by 40%. In fact, we should sell some of the surplus of weapons we now possess. We are no longer trying to "Kill" the world! Don't you read the news?

killer
What a bonehead.. do you really believe that the world wants peace with us? Especially radical Islam? Peace through strength has ALWAYS been our best defense and always will be... grow up and face the real world.

Scott
Reality is what you will read in tomorrow's paper. However,I like helping people so here goes. In 2040/50 there will be 9.3 billion people on the earth. America will have 400,000,000. Did you ever ask yourself; Why was the third Executive Order signed by President Obama dealing with Planned Parenthood? A small puppy has no chance against a pit bull, even if it does have teeth. Reality is a moving target, try not to get hit. I told you this,so you can help your KIDS!!!!

killer
Planned Parenthood? - what a joke, you mean Planned babykillers... abortion on demand, what a great group they are.

Back to my earlier point. I believe that evil exists in this world, just look at history. How are you going to stop it when it's knocking on your door, sit down and talk... I don't think so. Of course peace with our neighbor is preferred, but that will never happen. I would rather be prepared. You can still be friends with a big dog, but I bet you will respect is teeth.

Don't worry, my kids are great. Answer me this one question: Do you believe there is there evil in the world.

MESSIAH ECONOMICS
What I gathered from Obama's speech last night was this:

OBAMANOMICS=ECONOMIC SALVATION

And his speech was a lesson in Messiah Economics 101, the first sermon in a series of divine revelations on economic salvation, justice and hope. In other words, what Jesus is to salvation history Obama is to economic history. Just as Jesus is needed to save our souls from eternal damnation and hopelessness Obamanomics is needed to save the economy from eternal recession and joblessness. Without the blessing of Obama's economic redemption plan the recession will endlessly worsen defying the laws of economic history: the cycles of boom, bust and recovery.

Dr. Douglas
Today Dr. Douglas criticized Michelle Malkin in a post he titled “Worthless”. His criticism was that without data to back-up her claim - her opinion was without merit.

He stated, and I quote: ”Without the evidence Malkin's article is worthless - I guess it's just a cheap shot at Ashley Judd.”

I find it interesting that only 1 hour later Douglas states:”It's unethical for us, as a country, to play arms-supplier to the world”. Where is your data Dr. Douglas? What a hypocrite this guy is.

Iran is buying submarines from Russia. Missile technology is being supplied to Iran and North Korea from China. The AK-47, by far the world’s most common weapon of war, is produced in Russia, China, and Eastern Europe.

My conclusion regarding his post is: “Without the evidence Douglas’ post is worthless - I guess it's just a cheap shot at America.”

P.S. to Dr. Douglas:
You seem to always want to tell us that you are very brilliant and scholarly. Well, one point from of your Malkin post of today – “underpopulation” is not a word.

Cavuto
I just heard the mother of one of the victims of the Cole speak. My heart broke that she again will not see justice for her son. These parents were asked late yesterday to come to the White House. How convenient, of course it would be difficult for many to come with such short notice. This woman chose not to go as she was just too disappointed in how our Commander in Chief was acting. What a message we are sending to the world. Instead of spending money for condoms, water parks etc. we should be spending more on defense. We will need it. At the rate this president is going we will be attacked in no time while he talks about how we can all just understand each other. Pretty sad. It is going to be a long four years.

Scott
I am happy about your KIDS!!!

Where has Common Sense gone?
Kudos to you, Mr. North. It is a pleasure to read common sense for a change. Liberals seem to have lost all sense let alone..the common variety.

I am for moving to a new America...how about you?

Impeach Obama, Pelosi and Reid before it is too late!

War, what war?
The messiah says we can't use the term War on Terror, so it must be over. His marketing folks are trying to come up with a more positive phrase to apply to our struggle to convince the very few and relatively harmless folks who don't understand us that the new Amerika really doesn't mean them any harm and that we're really sorry for trying to push them around. Why would we need weapons or soldiers for that?

Defence Spending and the Stimulus Bill
If we need a stimulus bill to help get the economy moving again.
Why don't we get our border fences finished. This project would put lots of people to work and also stop the drugs and illegals from coming into our country. Seems like a win - win deal. Any chance of getting this type of line item into the stimulus package. Have it all done with private companies and government funded. Use enough companies to have a different company every 25 or 50 miles all working at the same time. We could even have some of those welfare ACORN folks from Chicago come down to the border and go to work. It is not as easy as demonstrating in front of a bank to force them to comply with CRA rules but it is honest work. Well, maybe ACORN folks are really not into this kind of American labor. I think they may like doing nothing or extortion for pay better.

Collins, Specter & Snowe just SOLD OUT..

BREAKING NEWS:

Senators Collins, Specter & Snowe just sold the United States out. Calling them "RINOs" is an insult to RINOs.

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D966EEQ80&show_arti cle=1

WASHINGTON (AP) - With job losses soaring nationwide, Senate Democrats reached agreement with KEY REPUBLICANS Friday night on an economic stimulus measure at the heart of President Barack Obama's plan for combatting the worst recession in decades. "The American people want us to work together. They don't want to see us dividing along partisan lines on the most serious crisis confronting our country," said SEN. SUSAN COLLINS of Maine, one of two GOP senators who signaled support for the bill.

Officials put the cost of the measure at $780 billion in tax cuts and new spending combined. No details were immediately available, and there appeared to be some confusion even among senators about the price tag as floor debate continued late into the night.

The agreement capped a tense day of backroom negotiations in which Senate Majority Leader HARRY REID, joined by White House chief of staff RAHM EMANUEL, sought to attract the support of enough Republicans to give the measure the needed 60-vote majority.

In addition to COLLINS, Sen. ARLEN SPECTER, R-Pa., said he would vote for the bill. Sen. OLYMPIA SNOWE, R-Maine, remained uncommitted." (cap emphasis mine)

Thanks to these three SELL-OUTS (Collins, Specter and Snowe), a few years from now, our country will be forced to default on its debt obligations.

That’ll be after hyper-inflation has destroyed the value of our currency.

These 3 Traitors have enabled the Leftocrats to BORROW nearly a TRILLION DOLLARS, and flush it down the toilet on wasteful pet pork projects.

A trillion dollars.

That’s 1,000,000,000,000.00

If any of these three American Traitors (Senators Collins, Specter and Snowe) happen to be YOUR Senator, please, FIRE THEM.

Colonel North
You and I are about the same age - I've got you by less than two years, born two weeks to the day after Pearl Harbor - both retired lieutenant colonels with combat service in Southeast Asia and other scraps during our active duty time, and we went on to continue serving our country in other ways. You and I know better than to imagine Liberal Democrats will stimulate the military over funding and growing existing and new social welfare programs.
The argument throughout our lifetimes (and before) has been "guns vs. butter," domestic welfare expenditures vs. military spending. Liberal Democrats so obviously fail to recognize national defense is the first order of any legitimate government and the highest priority social welfare program.
Is there one iota of stimulus in the Obama Porkulus Package for military members and their families? A dog park, nature trail for relaxing walks, playground or even security lighting on military bases let alone hardcore military needs included in the Package? If so I have not heard of any. I have heard only of cuts in defense and increases in costs to veterans for health care.
So I'm not dreaming impossible dreams, hoping for change in the behaviors or priorities of Liberal Democrats with Obama as President and a majority Congress.

True Traitor
Oliver North should have served time for his actions during the Reagan admin. I guess if we follow his logic everyone should be in the militar4y are working in defense and the economy would be always stimulated.

Col. North please write about this situa

Hey, Ollie?
You're a partiot. I believe it. So why don't you warn the American people about Executive Order 11490? And the plans that are perpetually (since around 1969) in place to declare marital law? You know this. You and Bud and others had this in mind, at least on paper.

How about warning the American people, now that the current occupant is shoring up the NSC to function like FEMA was designed to operate (before it was shown to be a toothless tiger?)

If you're a real patriot, you won't sit by and watch as there is a declaration of a state of emergency by this Amateur in Chief. Check out the new NSC plans, and tell me I'm wrong!

C'mon, Col. North. If you support our Constitution, you'd better speak up...while there's still time.
