Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- The Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, in Twentynine Palms, Calif., is a dusty, windswept installation high in the Mojave Desert. It is the world's largest U.S. Marine base, even though it is more than 150 miles from blue water. Perhaps that is appropriate, because this is the place where Marine units prepare for deployment to Afghanistan, which is more than 250 miles from blue water.

Twentynine Palms -- yes, that's how they spell it -- is also "home" to, among others, the legendary 7th Marine Regiment. Last summer, our Fox News documentary team was embedded with the 2nd Battalion of this celebrated unit in the shadow of the Hindu Kush. This week, I spent time with them as they remembered their fallen comrades and prepared for another deployment. Though they aren't allowed to say where they are heading, it's very likely to be back to Afghanistan.

Late last week, Gen. James Conway, the Marine commandant, suggested that as many as 20,000 U.S. Marines could be committed to the campaign in Afghanistan. On Wednesday, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden went to the Pentagon for a getting-to-know-you gathering with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Nothing that leaked out of this off-the-record meet and greet disputed the proposal that the Marines be phased out of Iraq and sent to battle the Taliban and al-Qaida.

The timing for such a move would seem to be right. This week, millions of Iraqis lined up to dip their fingers in purple ink and cast ballots in the first free and fair provincial elections in the history of Mesopotamia. Not only were half the voters women but also, among the candidates vying for 450 seats in the assemblies of 14 of Iraq's 18 provinces, more than 200 were women. Had radical Islamists -- whether they'd been Sunni or Shiite -- had their way, none of this ever would have occurred. Importantly, it happened only because young American soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen and Marines persevered in Iraq.

Failing to declare this election a major victory in the war being waged against us by radical Islam is a mistake. Mr. Obama could have mentioned the Iraqi elections in his "first formal television interview" -- given Monday to Hisham Melhem of the Saudi-owned, United Arab Emirates-based Al-Arabiya satellite network. Regrettably, he never mentioned it.

Instead, he talked about "communicating a message to the Arab world and the Muslim world that we are ready to initiate a new partnership based on mutual respect and mutual interest." He also responded to his interlocutor in ways that denigrated his predecessors, including by expressing his desire "to listen (and to) set aside some of the preconceptions that have existed and have built up over the last several years."

During the interview, Mr. Obama also spoke wistfully of the "respect and partnership that America had with the Muslim world as recently as 20 or 30 years ago" and added, "There's no reason why we can't restore that."

Some will say it isn't fair to make our new commander in chief stick to the facts. That's the trouble with television interviews. They are on tape and stay around for years. If you are going to do them, it helps to know the facts. Let's see, 30 years ago -- 1979 -- the year that Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Iran, the "Islamic Revolution" was proclaimed, the U.S. was first described as "the Great Satan," our embassy in Tehran, Iran, was sacked, and 53 Americans were held hostage for 444 days. That's probably not the kind of "respect" Mr. Obama had in mind.

How about 20 years ago -- 1989? While investigators still were combing the wreckage of Pan Am Flight 103 in Lockerbie, Scotland, Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi sent MiG-23s to attack a U.S. Navy carrier battle group in the Mediterranean Sea. Final score: U.S. Navy 2, Libya 0. Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa to kill Salman Rushdie. Islamic radicals murdered the president of Lebanon, and Saddam Hussein issued mobilization orders in preparation for invading Kuwait the following August. Some "partnership."

Unfortunately, the Al-Arabiya interview isn't the only troubling talk coming from the Obama administration that could well leave members of our all-volunteer force wondering just what is expected of them. In congressional testimony this week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that even though Afghanistan is the new commander in chief's "top priority," we also "ought to keep our objectives realistic and limited in Afghanistan."

I have spent my life in and around our military. Everyone I ever have known in our armed forces has believed in "realistic" missions and goals. But I've yet to meet a man or woman in uniform who is willing to sacrifice all for "respect," a "partnership" or a "limited objective."

Poor Colonel North
He is a man who has lived a whole life having honor as one of his major tenets. And now he just cannot bring himself to "dishonor" the office of the presiDENSEy. Sorry Colonel, but you must let go of this habit. This guy doesn't rate being given the benefit of the doubt and he is about to do to your beloved Corps what even carter couldn't do. They will soon serve as "goodwill ambassadors" for "The One" and his cockeyed, Stockholm syndrome styled approach to "dealing w/ the enemy".

You said it yourself: "But I've yet to meet a man or woman in uniform who is willing to sacrifice all for "respect," a "partnership" or a "limited objective."

Remember, Obama used those words to describe how we should "deal with" the people who are sworn to our destruction. We're in trouble.

Semper Fi, Colonel North
Immediately after basic training at San Diego, I received my 1st set of orders to report to Schools Batallion, MCCES-- Twentynine Palms, CA.

In all my subsequent Marine Corps duty stations, MCB Twentynine Palms stands out as THE place where I as raw Marine recruit graduate was molded & shaped into a true Marine. In the challenges we face now, it's importance to training our Marines, Army soldiers, and Airmen is without parallel.

I, as I'm sure all Marines do, honor you for your continuing service to our nation and our Corps.

I happened to be stationed at Twentynine Palms 32 years ago to the day [1977] during the 1st Jimmy Carter administration of impotency and appeasement of Islam. Sadly, our Democrat politicians have learned nothing since, in fact under this current president's administration, we are faced with a man who shares nothing of at least the humility that Jimmy Carter in his misguided attempts at appeasement was wont to display. This guy is a loose cannon full of braggodocio and no common sense, in addition to a hater of America and all it stands for.

Godspeed to our troops who will be charged with following the whims of this Marxist, Islamist-inbred Pretender of a Commander-in-Chief as he plays footsy with terrorists and fast-and-loose with Marine's lives and our nation's future.

Trouble ahead
This President is making this country into a paper tiger.

Nations that accept the willingness
of their citizens to risk harm in the Armed Services and entering into a powerful social contract. It is abrogated by abandonment or mistreatment at the nation's peril. Obama is not stupid, he will not likely make this mistake. But he is an ideologue, and these are capable of incredible self-delusion. He would do well to refrain from ticking off the Armed Services and that goes triple for the Corps.

Pistol, I Disagree Slightly...
with your calling Obama an "ideologue". He is an arrogant, inexperienced opportunist in my opinion. I expect to see the US military placed into similar roles that Slick Willie placed them during his terms in office (i.e., "meals on wheel").

As for "ticking off the Armed Services", Obama believes, in his arrogance, that since he is the POTUS (and the "annointed one"), he doesn't have to worry about their "loyalty". In that respect, he is totally wrong.

So the first
Few days of the COW's PResidency and he has begun sending the wrong messages. What if he really is a MUslim in the bad sense of the word? We'd be in big trouble. Big trouble.

Nee
Obama is president because he has been a master of smoke and mirrors. If his true persona is a patriotic Statesman he has a chance to be a good president. He is not stupid and he's a quick learner. If he is a muslim with an agenda above the good of the US, it should become apparent at some point. In 1945, a large part of this country were enamored of the communists and Stalin. The honey moon lasted a couple years, but soon enough the Stalinist agenda became clear, the Iron Curtain came down and even the most fervent commies shut up and went underground. Same with Castro. If Dumbo hates America and has other plans, it will become apparent and most likely he will be out of there, one way or another. And you may be right about ideologue. An ideologue has an agenda outside himself. Dumbo may not.

The Best OIF/OEF Correspondent
Colonel, stay safe out there on the trail.

A few things
First, elections don't equal democracy. China has fair, and free elections at the village level for more than a two decades now. Elections--even free and open ones--doesn't make Iraq and democracy--Iraq is not a democracy--young or otherwise.

Second, Iran and Libya aren't the entire Muslim world. Turkey, Jordan, Indonesia ring a bell?

And as for Afghanistan, one NATO commander stated that there is no military solution to Afghanistan at best NATO forces can simply mitigate the problem--that being keeping Karzai in power and the small area his government actually controls under its control.

2spot
"Remember, Obama used those words to describe how we should "deal with" the people who are sworn to our destruction. We're in trouble."

Who do you mean?

The entire Muslim world? Unless you plan on going to war against the entire Muslim world--which spans four of the five continents and includes major allies of the US and a good number of its own citizens--including those in the military--you are going to need to work with those in the Muslim world--they know who the bad guys are, you don't. Success in Iraq against the insurgents really took hold once the locals started to provide intelligence to US forces.

Has Obama ever said the US shouldn't go after terrorists? Didn't the US kill a number with a missile strike just the other day in Pakistan?

Akagi
"Didn't the US kill a number with a missile strike just the other day in Pakistan?"

Yes, we did. However, I hope Obama got permission from our ally (i.e., Pakistan) to do so. Otherwise we just commited an act of war against an ally.

And for comic relief, Obama should be charged with "war crimes" just as the Democrats have been charging Bush 43 for the last few tears. (Remember a large number of those killed in this missile strike in Pakistan were civilians.)

Col North

Well said Col. North,
If I were in the Service today, I would resign quickly.
Obama is a sleeping Muslem and is awakening a little each day. or maybe I should say is being exposed a little each day.
I know that is why the liberals have been tossing around the idea of reinstituting the draft. Joe Biden's slip of something happening that we will not like the Obama bunch's reaction too could be this very thing. A draft because the young refuse to enlist into his private army.
I was in the AF when Viet Nam started up in the late 50s and early 60s and saw the fiasco it became. AFSS I watched the Bay of Pigs fiasco first hand as it unfolded. I kept close watch on the Iran/khomini thing. I understood the Communist threat and its failure however its gains too. Once again Russia is rearing her ugly head.
Let the country hear more of you my good friend. You paid a price for your patriotism and I am proud of you for it.
However there is something much more dire about this man and his beliefs that upset my very core. I believe he is the enemy in our house and is doing everything to bring it down.

Right on, Col. North
Obama has it all wrong. He has got to be the most naive Presidents this country has ever had when it comes to his main purpose: defend and protect.

Very scary.

Jim
The terrorist North didn't pay a price for his patriotism. He paid a price for bad judgement and being amoral.

Obama's War
Thanks Colonel North.

It is troubling to me that our Navy recently interdicted a Cypriot flagged ship in the Red Sea; boarded it and found heavy weaponry and still let it go on to a Syrian port. Moreover, apparently the US Navy concertedly kept the Israeli Navy from taking the ship and forcing it to its own territory as confiscation. And the Russian Navy provided the ship what was seemingly an escort. Israeli commandos seized the Karine A in 2002, and multiple UN Security Council resolutions and USA Presidential Executive Orders call for interdicting the arms trade. Joint Chiefs head Adm Mullen seems to have obliquely criticized such lack of action. Is this a change brought about by now President Obama in place of ex-President Bush? If so, isn't this the type of difference between Bush's War on Terror and Obama's War? Could you please do a piece on this.

Realistic missions
Col North,
Think about it if the Mission is realistic it may be also limited. If we think we can do "nation building" in Afghanistan, we need to talk to Russia. You know we will fail. Therefore the mission should be "limited".

comments on Iran, gray ghost, and akagi
Another great article by a great war correspondant.

It was very good news for me to read how well, Iran recieved the presidents offer of peace. The fact that Iran was willing to "unclench its fist" and accept open negotiations without pre-conditions so we can lsiten.

Oh wait that didn't happen!! Iran DICTATED TO US what conditions WE should cow to, to have open negotiations.

Secondly on a few comments on what people said.

I do like Grey ghosts comments in general but the LOYALTY of the U.S. Armed Forces will ALWAYS be given to the Commander in Chief. No matter how badly he bungles the job. Pres Clinton had mine and the rest of the Military LOYALTY even when he did not always enjoy our 'private' RESPECT. Unless Pres Obama is way outside scope of Constitution we will reamin loyal.

For Akagi, what do you mean when you say "Elections--even free and open ones--doesn't make Iraq and democracy--Iraq is not a democracy--young or otherwise. "

Why is Iraq not a Democracy? They have multi-party rule. The People voted on the constitution and now voted in both National and Provincial elections where there were REAL choices and differences. Elections were by Secret ballot.

Websters Defines Democracy by: 1 a: government by the people ; especially : rule of the majority b: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections

So how is Iraq not a Democracy? Because the wise Akagi says so?

Now what remains to be seen is if the current elected party holds and loses the next election will there be a peaceful transition of power. That is the current unknown but time will tell.

Rob

This is our reality
for the next 4 lonnnngggg years. This President is a fool like no other. Learned yes, but still a fool. He is dangerous.

Pray for our troops. They will need it with this so-called commander in chief.

Obamanation will not only bring this country to socialism, but these young men and women are being played as pawns by him.

God save the innocent.

Ghost
"Yes, we did. However, I hope Obama got permission from our ally (i.e., Pakistan) to do so. Otherwise we just commited an act of war against an ally."

And then he'd just be continuing acts of wars Bush II had been doing as the US has been hitting targets inside Pakistan for years and often Pakistan at least publically hasn't been all that happy about it.

Jim:

What is a sleeping Muslim? If he is a Muslim, so? Or in your view, Muslim=terrorist?

Memo to Fox News
Please ask Mr. North's question at the press briefings and conferences "Mr. President, Mr, Press Secretary, MS. Secretary of State, Mr. Special Envoy, do you recognize the importance of and applaud the Iraqi elections?"

Democracy
CLCs restrict movements and activities of women--the especially true of in the Shia areas, there is a good deal of self-censorship in the press and on and on. There is a democratic process but that is not the same as a democracy.

From the start Taiwan had multi-party elections, the people of the ROC (pre-revolution) got to vote through their elected representatives on the Constitution, elections were secret. And it was not a democracy either. Using the simplitic Webster's definition--Cuba and China are democracies.

And not just me saying so. A number of ME specialists and experts on democracy say so as well.

Larry Diamond who is an expert on democracy states that there are four basic aspects of democracy: A political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections; the active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life; Protection of the human rights of all citizens; and a rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens.

The last two can't be seen as applying to Iraq in 2009.

RIGHT ON OLIVER NORTH !
WE STAND WITH ISRAEL,THIS IS THE REAL RESPECT AND PARTNERSHIP!GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS!

Tinsldr2
"I do like Grey ghosts comments in general but the LOYALTY of the U.S. Armed Forces will ALWAYS be given to the Commander in Chief. No matter how badly he bungles the job. Agree and disagree, and I also took the oath. But that oath is to "defend" the Constitution. The office of the POTUS I respected, as the president is the Commander in Chief. If I did not explain myself well enough, then I apologize.

But your last sentence says it all. And that is what worries me about Obama.

Akagi
"And then he'd just be continuing acts of wars Bush II had been doing as the US has been hitting targets inside Pakistan for years and often Pakistan at least publically hasn't been all that happy about it."

Two wrongs do not make a right. This last missile strike occurred in Obama's watch. Bush 43's actions are now in the past. We are dealing with the present and future. To continually bring up Bush 43's actions is non-productive. Most Conservatives were not real happy with Bush 43's actions anyway.

Daimond
"WE STAND WITH ISRAEL..."

Who is we? A number of THs here would disagree that "you" should stand with anyone but the USA. And do you enjoying shouting at everyone?

Troubled & Troubling Beginning
Obama's talk and "exotic background" as he tried to explain his entire life on p. 120 of The Audacity of Hope has troubled me since I first heard Obama speak. With each sentence utterd and printed I was more troubled. Now that Obama is our "one President at a time" I am even more troubled.
I wish him all success and support him as a loyal American, retired, combat-disabled veteran. If he fails it is likely the nation and all of we the people fall with him.
I am looking for one thing he has done right on Jan. 20 or since. He has moved quickly, preciptuously in many areas.
Already a military judge has ruled against Obama's not thought through suspension of military tribunals for Gitmo POWs. The closing of Gitmo within a year is also lacking a plan for the end actions.
Based on percieved insults by Obama, Afghanistan's Karzai is looking to Russia according to news reports. That could be disastrous and most ironic given the history of Afghanistan since the Russian invasion on Carter's watch.
I hope Obama does not vex too many more people or groups of people, or issue an unlawful order or more and prompt adverse reaction from our military professionals.
We have enough on our hands fighting with our true allies against these people - http://religionofpeace.com

Our??? Commander-in-Chief
Pray for our military; they need it now with BHO as "sadly" Commander-in-Chief.

BHO - Bone Head Obama
This guy called the 44th President is so out of his mind, he has absolutely no Historical perspective. His mind is filled with Utopian Dreams of making the world a fair place with a Level playing field for all. Forget about Security with this guy, it is not on his agenda. No, The Obama will right the wrongs of America's past, god help us all...

Akagi pronounces so it must be true
The Akagi has spoken. Pulled facts out his behind but he has spoken.

Akagi stated Iraq can not be considered a Democracy because it does not have "Protection of the human rights of all citizens; and a rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens."

Except the Iraq governement DOES have these things. The women in Iraq vote! The women in Iraq hold elected office! The same laws apply equally to Kurds, Turkmen, Shia, Sunni and Marsh Arabs.

All people in Iraq are free to open businesses, participate in elections, voice dissent and there is a free press.

The Imams are influential but they do not RULE. But in America many Pastors and people like Sean Hannity are influential but don't rule.

Iraq has asystem of police, courts and judges. Their conception of "human rights" is not ours but it is applied equally and fairly to everyone from the Government.

Then Akagi talks about CLCs or 'concerned local citizens'. First the term was replaced about 18 months to two years ago to "Son's of Iraq" or SOIs.

These are groups of local citizens under a local 'sheik' that work with coalition forces as a sort of quasi-community watch group to police their neighborhoods and maintain order. Getting them to work with Coalition forces was a big part of the successful strategy that Gen Petreaus implemented. many groups that were anti-coalition and US forces became SOI to stop the violence from outsiders in their local towns and earn money.

The SOIs are undergoing a peaceful transition from US Army control and funding to control and funding from the Iraqi Government.

For more on them visit http://www.mnc-i.com/

And for more on elections go to the excellent website of our Forces in Iraq at http://www.mnf-iraq.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Ite mid=1

Obviously not a leader
What a bonehead thing to say. Let's return to our relationship 30 years ago. I wonder what they think of him?

Col North--Excellent Article:
As a 25-year Military Vet 53-78, I heartily agree with U and I'm sure that most Current/Former Vet will too..I never got over Clinton's draft-dodging even tho I did and do give him credit where due..Mr Obama is still *Under Review* in my mind. (I"M SURE HE IS QUITE CONCERNED ABOUT THAT??!!) I'm sure he does not *like* WAR.. As a *BEEN THERE, DONE THAT* I think it's a fact that no one in his/her right mind likes it..But Believe ONLY what U see and KNOW not what U THINK!! ASK *GW*!

AKAGI GA
WHO'S SIDE YOU ON? YOU WOULDN'T KNOW DEMOCRACY IF IT SLAPPED YOU UP SIDE THE HEAD!

That's right Stan
All those courses I took on democratic theory at the MA and Ph.D. level, all those papers I gave at professional conferences on comparative political theory, and the like. I know nothing about democracy.

And is your caps lock key broken or do you just like to shout all the time?

Whose side? And which sides are these am I deciding between?

Again elections do not equal democracy. 75% of the population of China get to vote in open, fair elections--is the PRC a democracy then?

Akagi
You say, "elections do not equal democracy". And America does not equal a democracy. She is a representative republic. Really my man, bragging on yourself for being injected w/ the stupidity of college while ragging on someone else for their typing preference, are you really one to be casting stones ?

Remember, the "news" media is college edumucated and they can't even see the truth when it is riding on the bus that Obama just drove over them.

2Spot
Yes the US is formally a "democratic republic" but under the modern context of the term it can be rightfully viewed as a democracy as there are many different types of democracies and not just direct democracy which the term originally applies to. So it would not be incorrect in that context to call the US a democracy as under the umbrella of systems that term applies to it is.

Second, since Stan attacked me--twice in fact--I believe I have the right to respond in kind. Since the charge was I have no idea what democracy is--it was fair comment on my behalf to reject that charge.

Third, it shows extremely poor etiquette to type in all caps all the time as it is the net equivalent of shouting. It is fair to cap some words for emphasis--which I do at times. But the entire post? That shows a total lack of sense.

His first post to me I ignored. I try to ignore idiots. But the second time I really had no choice to respond. Like the line from Hoosiers--there is two kind of stupid, the kind where a man goes outside naked and barks at the moon and the one that does the same thing in your living room. The first you can ignore, the second you kinda have to do something about. If you want to defend idiots that couldn't write a cogent post if they had to--fine that is your right. But Stan was the aggressor here, not me. I didn't cast stones, he did and I responded. I am not a turn the other cheek type of person.

2Spot
p.s. If Stan was on Democraticunderground the typing in all caps would be enough to get him banned as it violates one of their many rules. But as far as that goes, I would be too--they claim to require you to be civil--my tone probably can't be viewed under that definition not to mention I don't think George Bush is evil incarnate either which I think is a requirement to stay unbanned there.
