Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- With all the preparations for the biggest, most expensive and most restrictive inaugural celebration in history, this is probably not the time to remind our president-elect of things he said and wrote, promises he made, or commitments he pledged. Perhaps one of his new aides will clip and save this for his perusal later next week.

Candidate Obama repeatedly described Afghanistan as "the central front in the war on terror." Sometimes he included neighboring Pakistan, which he occasionally threatened to attack. After a brief visit to Afghanistan in July 2008, he said that "one of the biggest mistakes we've made strategically" is failing "to finish the job." He used a sports metaphor -- "we took our eye off the ball" -- to accuse his predecessor of being "distracted by Iraq." Then he pledged that if elected, he would "once and for all dismantle al-Qaida and the Taliban." That is what we were told by once-Sen., now President-elect, soon-to-be commander in chief Barack Obama. But that's not what he is saying today.

This week, he announced that despite 61 released detainees returning to commit more atrocities, the Guantanamo Bay detention facility will be closed. He likely will make it official in his inaugural address. He authorized his secretary of state-designate to testify in congressional hearings that he will be "engaging with Iran" soon. Though Obama has given the nod to deploying 30,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, the soon-to-be vice president, standing in Kandahar this week, spoke nothing of victory. Instead, Sen. Biden said just that he is "very interested in what becomes of this region because it affects us all."

All of this demonstrates a frightening naivete about who our adversaries are, what is at stake, and what to do about it. After Tuesday, the ball is in Obama's court -- and in the hands of a new set of advisers, some of whom I have known well for decades. I hope they will be willing to apprise our new chief executive of some hard realities.

First, we're not at war against the Taliban or al-Qaida or Jemaah Islamiyah or Hamas or Hezbollah or any other group, no matter what its trade name is. Our fight is against radical Islam, which declared an unprovoked war against us -- just like the ideological struggle we waged against fascism and communism. The "central front" of this war may be on the Indo-Pakistani border today, but it could be in Somalia next month. It began in the 1980s, when Islamic radicals began blowing themselves up to kill Europeans, pro-Western Muslims, Israelis and Americans. We just didn't fight back until nearly 3,000 of us were killed by Islamic radicals Sept. 11, 2001.

From October 2001 until March 2003, Afghanistan was "the central front." From then until late 2007, the battle was waged primarily in Iraq. The goal -- no matter how poorly articulated -- was to prevent radical Islamists from using Mesopotamia as a haven for acquiring weapons of mass destruction and to fight them "over there" instead of here. It took longer and was more expensive in lives and treasure than anyone wanted, but it worked.

Today the campaign against radical Islam in Iraq is won. In countless battles, young Americans in flak jackets and helmets defeated often-suicidal enemies, built schools and clinics, established civil order, and trained and equipped a new ally in a part of the world where we need friends. Americans became the protectors of Muslim women and assured their right to participate fully in the economic, social and political life of a country. That's a major victory in the fight against radical Islam. Let's hope that at some point in the not-too-distant future, the new commander in chief will acknowledge his predecessor's resolve and thank the soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen and Marines who achieved it.

Instead of expressing "interest" in what happens in the shadow of the Hindu Kush, the new administration needs to realize that failure is not an option. Despite significant cultural and tribal differences between Afghanistan and Iraq, they are equally "winnable" if we do the right things:

--Use the presidential bully pulpit to remind Afghanistan's neighbors that if Taliban/terror bases on their territories are not closed, they will be attacked.

--Commence building paved roads throughout all of Afghanistan's 34 provinces to generate jobs, reduce casualties from IEDs and mines, and show the Afghan people that their government cares about them.

--Stop corruption and illicit drug production from the top down, not the bottom up. Arrest and prosecute the kingpins, and then go for eradication and crop replacement. It worked in Colombia, and it can work in Afghanistan.

--Shut down the NATO-ISAF command structure in Kabul. "Allied" forces that can't or won't fight should be thanked and sent home. Then replicate the effective and successful counterinsurgency strategy Gen. David Petraeus devised for Iraq.

And finally, a solution for relocating the violent enemy combatants in "Gitmo": Pick up the detainees, the guards and support personnel in Cuba, and bring them to the brand-new, as-yet-unoccupied 1,600-bed supermax Thomson Correctional Center in Illinois. They can keep Gov. Blagojevich company.

return to battlefield to kill americans

Clearly Liberals don't care about returning detainees to the battlefield to kill more americans.

It has been estimated that over 3,500 deaths of U.S. Servicemen in Iraq and Afganistan has been the result of Liberal opposition to the war.

Now THIS is how a true "hater" does it!.
"With all the preparations for the biggest, most expensive and most restrictive inaugural celebration in history" - O.NORTH'S OPENING SENTENCE

truth be told...
the inauguration ceremonies are restrictive because there are bad guys who want very much to kills lots of us.

They wanted to kill us years ago. They have done so. No reason to think they will stop now the GWB is out of office. In fact, with BHO in office, it may be even more fun to kill us than ever before... fewer consequences!

Recognizing hatred is not the same as hatred. Reacting to protect oneself from hate is not hate. Defeating a bully is not being a bully.

Those who beat their swords into plowshares are destined to plow for those who did not.

SMART POWER VS DUMB POWER
Is Hillary Clinton's "smart power" the intelligent force that we saw in action during the 1990s when bin Ladin's contempt for America was such that he called us a "paper tiger" who could easily be defeated, then proceeded to attack us worldwide culminating in the destruction of the Twin Towers? Is this the "smart power" Hillary was talking about?

Funny, but I don't recall bin Ladin calling America a "paper tiger" during the dumb power years of George W. Bush. I hear that Bush's years were so abysmally dumb that he had bin Ladin pooing in his pants thinking that he was dealing with a mad man. For who but a mad man would follow the invasion of Afghanistan with Operation Iraqi Freedom to topple Saddam Hussein? Who but a mad man would redouble his efforts in Iraq when the country was going to hell? Who but a madman has no regrets for his time in office hunting down and killing al Qaida thugs by the thousands and letting Israel decimate Lebanon and Gaza?

On January 20th Osama Bin Ladin will heave a sigh of relief as mad man Bush, Al Qaida's holy terror, is replaced by a soft gentle passive man who'd rather be a domestic president than a war time leader; a 60s born antiwar leftist who thinks global warming is a greater threat to U.S. security than global terrorism and that jihadists should be treated as common criminals. When Barack Hussein Obama is sworn in as President and the era of dumb George is at an end Bin Ladin will be giving thanks to God and joining the celebration as he unsheathes his deadly sword.

Lincoln said:
"Congressmen who willfully take action during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs, and should be arrested, exiled or hanged,"

Can this be applied to the socialist elect and the gaffe master baffoon Biden? (well, not the hanged part) PLEASE

Our brave service people are over there facing all types of horrors and fighting FOR US all the USA not the republicans not the demonrats, but all the men women and children and even the new whitehouse poochie.

If the socilist elect and the sec.of state don't take off their rose colored glasses and take off their talkinghead "party clothes" and roll up their sleeves to get the job done then I fear it'll be a free licence to the radical Islamists to attack our homeland again with the help of the GITMO's they sent back into the fray!

Great Plan
I whole heartedly agree with your plan to keep America safe, but I do not know of one politician who has the guts to do what needs to be done. I think we need a Marine as President. I would vote for you!

Thak you for your service, & your wisdom. Maybe someone will listen.

Edna -- you're right, but...
Edna Eagle wrote, "I fear it'll be a free licence to the radical Islamists to attack our homeland again with the help of the GITMO's they sent back into the fray!"

Yes, but just remember the Left's magic words:

'IT'S BUSH'S FAULT!"

OBAMA, PALIN AND ALASKAN OIL
While the Congress spends billions to revive the economy, it dismisses and ignores one vital resource to alleviate foreign energy dependence.

Congress spends while not defining the real problems that are forcing the present emerging depression!

Remember, one factor that started the present economic downturn was gasoline prices.

While we spend millions on Obama's inauguration, his first act appears to be to give the homosexuals a prize in mandating the end of Don't Ask/Don't Tell. His first act should be to develop Alaska's oil reserves!

I pray they will, but I fear they won't....God help us all in the years to come because I don't believe our president-elect, or any of his "advisors", are up to the task of keeping the US safe...mainly because they don't understand the danger.

Good article Col. North....thank you for your service and keep telling it like it is!

What's wrong with pointing out that the President Elect wants to cut back and save money. The first thing he does is OK the largest most expensive party ever thrown in the history of inaugerations.
He has changed his mind almost on every issue, selected cabinet members who seem to be under investigation for everything ( Clinto Era.. rerun) I don't know sir, I was just a simple leather neck trying to get it done. Has it all gone to waste over this guy and our new soon to be government ?

where do you get your stats of 3500 deaths in Iraq an Afganistan I'd like to know the source of this info.

Colonel North,

Again you have distilled the rhetoric down to the essentials, but I fear that those who truly need to hear this won't.

At this point, the Chosen One can do no wrong, and all the promises, the rheotric and the bombast will simply be dismissed as words on a campaign trail not to be taken literally.

Unfortunately, the enemy does not view things in the same way that we do. As Charlie showed us many moons ago, infinite patience can create far more havoc than an immediate attack that does not eliminate the head of the Hydra.

President Bush understood well that the enemy is implacable, patient, and will strike only when we allow our vigilance to falter. This unfortunately does not fit in well with the current mindset of immediate gratification. In the left's eyes the Global War on Terror has been an utter failure in the bin Ladin was not captured and brought to "American Justice". The establishment of a fledgling democracy in Iraq, the toppling of a dictatorship, the failure of Al Quada to mount a single meaningful counterattack means nothing.

And now the American people have spoken and elected one who has NO real world experience, and is surrounding himself with those who loathe America and American strength.

The only saving grace is that there are 48% who still believe in God and in our Republic, and will never ever submit.

God bless you Colonel, God bless America

There never were many terrorists using Islam as justification in Iraq and Iraq was a SECULAR country now it is an Islamic country and an ally of Iran. Those are facts. After Tora Bora Bush the torturer began a policy of appeasement toward Al Q and Osama. As a result Al Q and the Taliban are in position to obtain REAL nuclear weapons from Pakistan. Ollie, a convicted felon whose convictions were thrown out with the help of the ACLU, is simply wrong and more concerned with conservative talking points than what is good for the nation.

What Happened to "Restrictive"?
Every kid in junior high school knows that a writer's introductory paragraph is supposed to introduce his subject. North begins by telling us that Obama's inauguration will be the most "restrictive" in history but he never gets back to this. What is he talking about? What is restrictive about the inaguration? Security precautions? One reason they are necessary is to prevent some fanatic from shooting our new President---an event made ever more likely by the steady drumbeat of hatred coming from the far-Right. North seeks to scare the public about Obama, calling him "naive". Hannity, as of night before last, was still calling Obama a terrorist. I receive a conservative mailing list from people determined to prove that Obama is not an American citizen. If you folks really love your country and want to be helpful, maybe you should stop giving people reasons to shoot its leader---then the Secret Service wouldn't have to set up such "restrictions"---because we are all very aware of who, in this country, brags about having a lot of guns and considers shooting them to be an act of freedom-loving patriotism.

LMAO well said Lilly for some reasons these former patriots (they have given up that lie now and most seem to be secessionists or out right rebels) think owning a tool (gun) makes them some kind of tough person rather than a wimp perhaps we should start something like that with a shovel?

Is this the best you have?
Is this the best you have to offer, Lil and Hal: a composition lesson and a conspiracy theory?

When the enemy is breaching the perimeter, and I have fight back to back with one other veteran, I'll choose to fight with Colonel North.

Lincoln said nothing of the kind. As A congressman Lincoln spoke out against the Mexican War. The alleged quote was created by J. Michael Waller, who claims he was misquoted.

Lt. Col. North evidently wants to attack Pakistan and is telling the Afghans that "We're from the government, and we're here to help you."

LMAO of course you will LOL. Me? I don't want old Ollie for two reasons. One, he is as old as I am, give me a younger and braver Iraq War vet. Second, while Ollie did well on one battlefield (Vietnam) he turned and ran on another (Capitol Hill). I will take a steady and true guy.

The right defense
The borders of this country should be secured as while as the Mexican southern border. Pakistan and other hot spots in the world are our responsibility in the name of defense of freedom from oppression. There also must be no oppression in the name of social justice in the United States. A strong defense can be achieved without a draft if the situation for military service is better for those who are abusing the system at a young age.

I really don't care who said it...IT'S STILL TRUE and wouldn't bother me a bit it it's implications were followed (except hanging)

No government is better than what we got coming as of 1-20-09 IMO

Let the military chiefs do their jobs unobstructed and stop micro-managing and this war would have been over already...that's my 2 cents and I am entitled to my opinion..

DON'T TREAD ON ME...

Clemenceau once said that war is too important to be left to the generals. Since France lost over 1,000,000 men in World War I, he had his reasons. You can't just let the generals do what they want. Among other things they want different things. Should Lincoln have justed handed things over to McClellan. Should FDR have left Kimmel and Short to manage things. He had to make the decision to give primary emphasis to the European theater, even though Germany hadn't attacked us.

We have civilian supremacy over the military. It's one of the cornerstones of our constitutional government. Since congress has the right to declare war, a right that has totally atrophied, and has to authorize every penny the military spends, they have their say too.

Obama has listened but did he learn
At this point, Barack Obama seems to at least heard what our current president has told him about the requirements of protecting our national security. In the same breath, which seems to be Obama's trademark, he says he will close Gitmo, talk with Iran and allow Homosexuals to serve openly in the military.

Obama in my opinion has no intention of being a war president or really gives a hoot about national security. He sees an opportunity for an extreme power grab of this nation's financial infrastructure and beyond that will delegate the number one task in his job description, Commander in Chief.

Obama's shortcomings and those of his "crack" administration will surface early. Obama and congressional Democrats believe this is a golden opportunity to run every social experiment they ever conceived. We the people are about to be the unwilling patients of serious government malpractice.

, he says he will close Gitmo, talk with Iran and allow Homosexuals to serve openly in the military. "

If these things bother you, then you will
never agree that Obama has learned anything or
knows anything.

I my opinion, two of the steps are essential
to homeland security, not to mention national
morality. I hesitate about the third only
because the military tends to be a refuge for a lot of nut cases (and please, don't take
that as a blanket statement. My own son went
through the military and I am proud of him
for that), but these nut cases can make the
homosexuals' lives miserable and quite
possibly put them in danger.

all of which should be done

"...Obama in my opinion has no intention of being a war president or really gives a hoot about national security. He sees an opportunity for an extreme power grab of this nation's financial infrastructure and beyond that will delegate the number one task in his job description, Commander in Chief..."

Oh stop it silly man Commander in chief is obscure at best. That is hardly his most important job description. But of course you frightened and timid people wouldn't understand that as you cower and search for a strong man

"...Obama's shortcomings and those of his "crack" administration will surface early. Obama and congressional Democrats believe this is a golden opportunity to run every social experiment they ever conceived. We the people are about to be the unwilling patients of serious government malpractice..."

OH no you don't silly man. Look around you and see what the extreme conservative experiment of the last eight years has wrought. Malpractice is a mild term. You best hope we get it right

WHAT IN HEAVENS NAME ARE YOU SAYING HERE?

First of all, liberals don't know that detainees are being returned to the battlefield. Were they in the battlefield to
begin with? I don't know, do you know? What I do know is that if I had been detained &
perhaps tortured for years on end, when I did
leave, I would not be pro-American or neutral.
I would be mad as hell, and ready to take
revenge. Does that make the liberals dumb or
the people who put them in prison to rot dumb?
>
What liberals care about is that if they are
guilty, then try them. If you don't have
proof, let them go. There is no declared war,
for starters. Secondly, I assume that
our justice system and its laws are not just
based on what is good and proper for our
citizens but that they are based on some sort
of morality that should encompass our actions
towards everyone.

Your second statement is also highly suspect.
I heard recently that the death toll in
Iraq had reached 4000. Does that mean that
only 500 were killed for some reason other
than liberals. I DON'T THINK SO.

What would be silly
would be to in any way legitimize liberal lunacy by responding to drivel.

Never a dull...
It always amazes me to see the number of leftie loonies who glom onto Townhall to offer their "words of wisdom", perhaps hoping to shock the rest of us with the profundity of their thoughts. Why can't these parasites move over to the Huffington Post and post their comments there?

If we don't get it............
right on the central front........it possibly could get noisy on the western front......not good at all!

"Frightening Naivete"
Actually, the one displaying "frightening naivete" is Oliver North himself.

North claims, like all Neocon nitwits, that "radical Islam" just wants to destroy America because we are rich and (allegedly) free, and they aren't. This, I submit, is either frighteningly naive or (more likely) just so much ideological eye-wash.

There have always been Islamic extremists. They haven't posed a serious threat to the West since the late Middle Ages. They are not even a threat now, but they are growing in popularity because of reaction against US interventionism.

As Pat Buchanan says, they're over here because we're over there.

The best thing to do about radical Islam is to stop trying to invade and run the entire globe from Washington. This is especially true now, when our economy is in the process of crashing under the weight of welfare/warfare state spending.

This, I submit, is the logical and thoughtful approach. North's idea of constant warfare against anyone who resists American intervention is the shockingly naive viewpoint.

By the way, I am a small government advocating libertarian, not a "liberal."

Go away terrorist
"Colonel" North has some pretty harsh words for terrorists and Islamic militants. Too bad he is a terrorist himself, and almost went to jail for selling weapons to Islamic radicals. TH has become such a let down. Are they any conservative news sites with credibility (and that don't celebrate unrepentant terrorists like Ollie)?

Clemanceau was one of the reasons France lost so many people in the latter days of the war.

Lincoln gave non-specific orders to his generals and didn't fight the battles for them. His generals gave the specific orders and victory was achieved. You obviously agreed in how the Viet Nam war was fought (in Washington, as it was) instead of on the battle fields. No wonder we lost.

The last warrior politician was Napolean. He still lost!

If you really believe that our fight is with radical Islam, then we're going about it the wrong way. While armies are good at defeating other armies, they are not able to defeat ideologies.

We were able to defeat Germany and Japan on the battle field and keep them from forcing their ideology on others. But what defeated fascism and communism was the exchange of capital, culture and ideas that followed, not the exchange of bullets and bombs.

Col. Billy Mitchell writes:
It has been estimated that over 3,500 deaths of U.S. Servicemen in Iraq and Afganistan has been the result of Liberal opposition to the war.

Release Gitmo detainees
I think we should release all of them at Gitmo-give them a weapon and fly them into the battlefield so our military could help them reach their goal of dying for Allah.

Tortured Terrorist
Poor little things, tortured like that. They should be thankful we didn't use Old Saddams techniques, like drilling holes through their knees or electric current through their private parts, or raping their wives and children in front of them. Oh but thats not torture thats just a misunderstanding between friends. But loud music and bright lights and little sleep thats torture.

You seem to have a warped sense of what democracy really means.

Should we have arrested or exiled Republicans who didn't support our military actions in Bosnia or Somalia?

Should we have arrested or exiled Abraham Lincoln when he objected to our actions in the Mexican-American war?

Really?
Do you really think the Great and Mighty Messiah will listen to anything you or any other military mind that had has any real knowledge of what needs to be done. He has an agenda. If he won't listen to conservative economists who are advising how not to destroy this country what makes you think he will listen to real Marines.
