Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- Freedom Alliance is an educational and charitable foundation that, among other things, provides college scholarships to the offspring of U.S. military personnel killed in action. Every year, coincident with the Army-Navy game, the organization presents its "Defender of Freedom Award" to an individual whose character, courage and selfless deeds inspire virtuous service from the rest of us. This year's recipient, U.S. Marine Andrew Kinard, unequivocally meets these criteria.

On Oct. 29, 2006, Kinard was leading his Marines on a foot patrol in Rawah, Iraq -- searching for a terrorist bomb factory -- when a command-detonated IED exploded directly next to his left leg. The blast blew him into the air, and he landed almost 20 feet from the crater. Three other Marines were wounded.

According to those who were there, before the grievously injured officer passed out from loss of blood, he ordered them to set up security, get a head count, and start treating the other injured Marines. The platoon corpsman tried to stanch the flow of blood but couldn't find enough undamaged tissue to apply tourniquets, and Kinard was losing blood from almost everywhere.

A Casevac helicopter airlifted him to the Marine air base at al-Asad and then to the Army trauma hospital in Balad, north of Baghdad. Sixty-seven pints of whole blood -- more than five times the number in a healthy adult -- were pumped into the failing officer's veins in a 24-hour period.

By the time he was flown to Landstuhl, Germany, in a C-17 Nightingale, he had gone into cardiac arrest and been resuscitated twice. Emergency surgeries went on nearly nonstop to plug the seemingly innumerable holes punched in his body. The family was alerted, and a prayer vigil was held. Hundreds of people half a world away went to their knees and begged God for a miracle.

Some miracles happen immediately. This one took a while.

Four days after being blasted to pieces, Andrew Kinard was in the intensive care unit at the National Naval Medical Center, in Bethesda, Md., with his family around his bedside -- and still praying. By the time I got back from Iraq, just before Christmas 2006, "Drew" -- as his Marine and Naval Academy friends call him -- already had endured more than two dozen surgeries.

His doctor told me that the 24-year-old Marine was "getting better," even though Kinard had pneumonia, a blood infection and multiple perforations of his intestines from shrapnel. They had just done one of the many skin grafts necessary to prepare his stumps for prosthetic limbs.

When I walked into his room, his mother and his sister Katherine were with him. His dad, who is a doctor in Spartanburg, S.C., and two younger siblings, Courtney and Will, were all en route to spend Christmas with their badly battered Marine.

But for all the cards, posters, banners, Christmas stockings, lights, photos and flags, the room would have looked like a scene from a science fiction movie. Monitors, electronic devices, compressors, pumps and assorted tubes, wires and bags of colored fluids surrounded the bed -- all connected to Andrew Kinard. Tiny flecks of shrapnel were still visible on the side of his face. He had no legs. His abdomen was an open hole. And he was smiling. "God is good," he said in greeting.

During the next 11 months of hospitalization, Andrew Kinard was living proof of that statement. When I asked him or his family how I could help, the inevitable response would be, "Just pray for recovery." And so he also became evidence of the power of prayer.

In April 2007, he flew to Camp Lejeune, N.C., to meet his Marines when they returned from Iraq. Wearing his Marine utility uniform for the first time since being wounded, he greeted his comrades in a special "all-terrain" wheelchair.

Asked by a reporter to recollect the day he was wounded, he acknowledged that his memory of the attack had been dulled by shock and pain. Then he said: "A man asks himself: 'If something happens to me when I go into battle, how will I react? Will I be brave?'"

As they arrived home, the members of "Alpha" Company made it clear: Andrew Kinard was, without a doubt, their hero.

On Oct. 29, 2007, exactly a year after he was wounded, the indomitable young officer came home. Dignitaries and thousands of well-wishers were on hand to welcome Andrew at First Baptist Church in Spartanburg. The following Sunday, he spoke at all three services, thanking all for their unfailing prayers.

His recovery will continue for years to come. But on one of my visits to him in the hospital, the man who once played rugby at the Naval Academy said: "I don't need legs. I have my arms. I learned discipline at the Naval Academy. I have my faith and a desire to serve. Maybe I'll go to law school."

Andrew has all of that and more. He also has a great sense of humor. He has a T-shirt with the words "Marine For Sale" printed on the front. On the back, it reads, "40 Percent Off -- Some Assembly Required."

Families are often overlooked.

Families of military personnel are often overlooked. When deployed, they are separated from loved ones for extended periods of time missing births, weddings, deaths, and special events of family members.

This is one of the reasons Bill Clinton should not have cut the military by 350,000 service personnel. The result was longer deployments in Iraq and Afganistan because of the shortages.

So while Bill Clinton is running around the globe getting paid millions for speeches, telling people what a great president he was, Military families are having to pick up the pieces for the damage he has done.

WOW!
The definition of Courage in The Dictionary should be changed to a picture of U.S. Marine Andrew Kinard.

I think he should write a book.
I wish I knew him.

Honoring Verterans
The most surreal moment of my military career up to this point was hearing that Oliver North was en route to visit the Forward Operating Base in Iraq where my unit was stationed. I couldn’t believe why the Army was allowing an unrepentant terrorist to visit troops in Iraq as they were engaged in a fight against terrorism. It was like something straight out of an Orwell novel.
Why isn’t North shouted down every time he opens his mouth about the victims of terrorist attacks? This is a man who defied the legislature by providing weapons to Islamist militants in Iran and enabled terrorist death squads in Central America. He would still be considered a felon today if the extreme left-wing ACLU hadn’t managed to get his convictions vacated on a technicality. I miss the old TH… this is a perfect example of how our credibility is going downhill.

Prayers aren't always answered
in the way we hope and that is one thing stories like this do bring to my mind, it's not like the Lord favored this soldier and did not favor others who passed on into His arms. We don't know His mysterious ways, but prayer can bring us strength and hope even in the worst conditions and help us survive what may seem like a hopeless situation, as it did this young man. My prayers go out to all military families who suffered losses, no matter how great or how small they may seem, they mattered to you and they matter to us.

Rory, you destroy your own credibility
when you tell a story and leave out facts that might change the appearance of it. That's dishonest. I don't know if you were an adult in the days you speak of, but I was, and what you did for the soldiers in Iraq today might be considered an act of terrorism in the future, if they decide to use what they learned for those purposes. Understand what I'm getting at, here?

AmericanWoman
Not really. Please explain. Nobody I served with in Iraq handed over their weapons to jihadists or facilitated death squads. I may not have been an adult in the early 80's, but if we can agree that the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes, is terrorism today, then why shouldn't it have been terrorism 25+ years ago?

What our govt is and isn't.
Our government and our military are made up of human beings, they are not Gods and they do make mistakes. Most of them try to do the best they can under the most difficult of circumstances. Sometimes what is done to bring freedom to others can backfire, because those others are up to no good or follow someone who is. That's life and the nature of humanity, but I don't fault someone for trying... millions of people in this world are free because of us and maybe some people don't want to recognize that, but it is what it is.

Do your own homework, Rory
and try not to leave anything out.

BTW, thank you for your service. You helped to bring freedom to millions, but what they do with that will be their choice. Oliver North tried to do the same. I remember.

I completely agree with that...
but please don't forget that when Oliver North conducted his numerous terrorist acts he was acting illegally. That's why he was considered a triple-felon until 1990.
Look at it this way: If I gave weapons to death squads who then slaughtered of thousands of innocent people in Iraq, would you be able to write that off as an honest mistake as long as I gave those weapons away for the sake of freedom? I hope not. I think one of the reasons BHO and other liberals are able to portray our troops as indiscriminate killers is because we do things like make Oliver North a spokesperson for wounded vets.

A Wounded Marine Hero
Pardon my ignorance folks. I'm new to posting on TH, but I thought this was a story about a brave Marine who refused to surrender to his wounds or give up on his faith. I didn't realize that this was a forum for denigrating the author of the story.

Having served in our great nation's military for over thrity years (and still serving as a civilian) I have had the pleasure of serving with the finest human beings that ever walked on the face of the earth; the United Staes Military. While this story of Andrew is truly inspiring, it is indicative of the overwhelming majority of the men and women serving today.

You shouls all take great comfort in knowing that this story is an example of the kind of Americans that bravely volunteer to stand on the forward edge of freedom, defending democracy.

Sleep well.

It's not your ignorance my friend, it's our society. Your take was spot on. This article gives me hope in a world that becomes more complicated daily. We live in a Society that tends to honor evil, or at least put them in the headlines, while ignoring honor. Most people over forty know that John W. Hinckley, Jr. attempted to assassinate Ronald Reagan, but few people know the name Timothy McCarthy, the Secret Service agent who was shot in the chest protecting President Reagan. We should celebrate that we have a man like US Marine Andrew Kinard willing to serve his country and tell his story to our children when we are teaching them to handle adversity. We should thank Oliver North for taking the time to share his story with us. I sincerely appreciate your service to our country and I am proud to be an American.

Heroes redefinement
Obama will declare life in some cases are scared so soldiers can never be heroes but abortion doctors deserve their protection.

Your posts show a complete lack of understanding about Iran-Contra.

But know this.

The on and off again "Boland Amendment only prohibitied U.S. tax dollars from funding the Contras in Central American. Not one american citizen was ever accused or convicted of giving U.S. Tax dollars to the Contras.

Iran - The embargo prohibited selling weapons to Iran. Not one american citizen was ever accused or convicted of selling weapons to Iran.

Honoring Jane Fonda
Let's not forget that Oliver North lied directly before Congress to protect Reagan from having to explain the illegal Iran/Contra arms deal. That was very unpatriotic.
On the other hand, Jane Fonda is a much better Patriot than Ollie North. Jane's courageous stance against the Vietnamn disaster succeeded in bringing the end of war that would have dragged on for more years. Untold thousands of our young men were spared a needless death in the jungle and billions in taxpayer money was saved by ending the war thanks to Jane.

Look at how the Republicans call themselves "Patriotic" yet have done a 180 and embrace communist China, send our best jobs to them, import their toxic toys and tainted food and then give commie style bailouts for Wall Street theives. Shows how right Jane has been all along.

Kool Aid Alert!

Actually educated people know Bill Clinton negociated the current "free trade" agreement with China. So if anyone has a problem with their job going to China, they need to blame Bill Clinton. To do otherwise would indicate a serious lack of integrity.

Lying before congress must not be really a big deal. Congressman lie before their fellow congressman all the time. Only difference they pass a law granting themselves immunity from doing so.

So in a nation where we are all suppose to be equal under the law. If Congressmen and women can lie before the Congress, so can every American. Thats the Constitution.

First In MA--Sgt Maj McDaniel THANK U!!!
To the Cheering Section for "Hanoai Jane" U CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!! I almost went to jail in the Oakland Aprt after taking somewhat action against a large, smelly person who spat on me.

First Contd--Got a bad Mouse
Not GOOD Days for America and I deeply resent anyone telling me that Jane Fonda did the US A great service!! I spent almost a quarter century in the Service of my Country and I will NEVER APOLOGIZE to anyone for that service..U are entitled to ur opinion!! Just DO NOT ADDRESS IT TO me111 HAVE A GOOD DAY

Jane Fonda not a humanitarian

I do know Jane Fonda expressed no regret for the 5 million people murdered after U.S. Troops left S.E. Asia.

Its amazing to me how Liberals can be so proud of 5 million people murdered in their name.

I am grateful it wasn't conservatives spitting on U.S. troops when they returned home.

The Soldier
The Soldier

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the soldier,
who salutes the flag,

who serves under the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,

who allows the protester to burn the flag.
