Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"Your strength can compensate for my weakness, and your wisdom can help to minimize my mistakes."

-- Jimmy Carter, inaugural address, Jan. 20, 1977

WASHINGTON -- More than 31 years after he uttered those words, America still is trying to compensate for and minimize Jimmy Carter's mistakes and weaknesses, the greatest of which appears to be hubris. This week, our much-traveled 39th president ventured as a "private citizen" to the Middle East on a self-described mission "exploring possibilities for peace." Regrettably, what citizen Carter has succeeded in doing is encouraging our nation's adversaries, lending credibility to terrorists who have killed our countrymen, and disparaging a beleaguered ally.

Carter's current sojourn in personal diplomacy is just his most recent foreign foray in post-presidential folly since being voted out of office in Ronald Reagan's 1980 landslide. During his global quest for relevance, he rarely missed an opportunity to denigrate our country's interests, helping him to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. But this week's expedition to Jerusalem, the West Bank, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Saudi Arabia may prove to be the most damaging excursion yet.

Despite his claims, Carter is no "neutral observer." In June 1994, the former president went to Pyongyang to broker a failed nuclear disarmament deal with North Korean despot Kim Il Sung. In 2002, he deigned to dignify the brutal, bearded butcher of Havana, Fidel Castro. While in the "island paradise," he disparaged America's commitment to human rights and praised Cuba's education and health care systems. In 2006, he and his self-appointed "impartial arbiters" declared that the Palestinian elections that brought Hamas to power in Gaza were "legitimate." Later that same year, in his book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid," he declared, "Israel's continued control and colonization of Palestinian land have been the primary obstacles to a comprehensive peace agreement in the Holy Land."

Though Carter's present 10-day Mideast trip has been overshadowed in the U.S. media by the visit of Pope Benedict XVI, the former president's travel and talks have been widely celebrated in the Arab press, particularly on radical Islamic Web sites. All have observed that the former chief executive's decisions to lay a wreath at the tomb of Yasser Arafat and his meetings with senior Hamas officials are "unprecedented."

To note that this entire venture is an extraordinary propaganda windfall for radical Islam is an understatement. If anyone knows that, it should be the former president. His Atlanta-based Carter Center has had a full-time office in Ramallah, West Bank, since 2006 to "monitor developments in the region." Apparently, the staff has failed to apprise its founder that he is being celebrated as the man who will "bring an end to Zionist hegemony."

Hamas, it should be noted, is listed by the U.S., Israel and the European Union as an international terrorist organization. Hamas radio pledged as recently as this week to "destroy the illegal Jewish entity" and continue to "deliver Allah's fire" (meaning Iranian-built 107-mm and 122-mm rockets) on "the occupiers" (meaning any Israeli within range). During the course of the past year, Hamas terrorists have fired the high explosive missiles repeatedly into Israeli communities, killing and wounding hundreds of civilians.

Unlike his past efforts on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, it is hard to fathom what good Carter sought to achieve in this peripatetic itinerary. His trip is taking place during Passover, one of Judaism's holiest holidays. Other than a brief no-press-allowed arrival meeting with Israel's ceremonial president, Shimon Peres, he will meet with no other senior Israeli officials. That hasn't deterred his desperate bid for attention -- or his bid to grant legitimacy to Hamas.

On Tuesday, Carter met with Hamas representatives in Ramallah. He then went to Cairo, Egypt, for "a listening session" with the terror group's Gaza leaders: Mahmoud Zahar and Said Siyam. But it was the meeting he scheduled in Damascus, Syria, with Hamas kingpin Khaled Mashaal -- wanted in connection with the death of more than a half-dozen American citizens and scores of Israelis -- that defies comprehension.

In response to critics -- and the entreaties of the Bush administration not to meet with the leaders of Hamas or go to Damascus -- Carter generously said, "I'll share what I find with the Israelis and with Fatah and also, of course, with the American government officials."

That's mighty kind of the man. By the time his trip concludes, Carter will have broken bread with the sworn enemies of the United States and disparaged our only democratic ally in the region. He also has broken faith with his countrymen. He's not naive and he's not ignorant. But he is on an ego trip.

One other fact drives home just how evil Arafat was--the fact that (late) King Hussein of Jordan relegated the act of getting Arafat out of Jordan to a similarly evil man, namely (future Pakistan dictator) Zia ul-Haq (identified by many Banglas as a 1971 war-criminal, and by Ghulam Jatoi as having committed "worse atrocities than 'Operation Searchlight'" in Sindh during his misrule)!

"to prevent further violence"? Probably not--but maybe to "smooth" it with Arab regimes for larger picture.

Where the blame lies.....
04.15.2008 Haaretz Editorial

....
It is doubtful whether it is possible to complain when an outside observer, especially a former U.S. president who is well versed in international affairs, sees in the system of separate roads for Jews and Arabs, the lack of freedom of movement, Israel's control over Palestinian lands and their confiscation, and especially the continued settlement activity, which contravenes all promises Israel made and signed, a matter that cannot be accepted. The interim political situation in the territories has crystallized into a kind of apartheid that has been ongoing for 40 years. In Europe there is talk of the establishment of a binational state in order to overcome this anomaly. In the peace agreement with Egypt, 30 years ago, Israel agreed to "full autonomy" for the occupied territories, not to settle there.

These promises have been forgotten by Israel, but Carter remembers.

Dear President Bush and Secretary Rice:

Please pull Jimmy Carter's passport. He has no business speaking to foreign leaders on behalf of the United States. As a private citizen, I could not get the time of day from any foreign leader, why should he? Just because he's an ex-president?

Remember, we threw that bum out after 4 years. I personally would like to see him tried and convicted of Treason, but I will settle for sending him back to Plains, Georgia to plant peanuts and build Habitat for Humanity houses again.

Best regards,
(Your name and address)

If Reagan asked Begin & Sharon not to shoot Arafat,as you say. That may have been to prevent further violence.I don't remember.I doubt if it was for respect of the man.

Not killing him was not the same as bringing him into this country and the White House. That made him equal to other legitimate leaders, which he was not,in my opinion.

After years of appeasing Arafat and trying to tame the mad dog, that he was,he turned his back on the deal he had been asking for for years.

No matter what leaders in the Middle East demand from Israel, they will accept no less than its destruction. They want to see the dead bodies.Nothing less will do.

The Traitor
In Atlanta, we call one of the city's main thoroughfares "Jimmy Traitor Boulevard."

He's not just embarassing, he's dangerous.

He is on a stupidity trip!
Good article! However, I disagree with your soft conclusion. Jimmy Carter is on a stupidity trip, not an ego trip! Yes, he was the worst President we've had in a long, long tim! But, how this good man fell of the turnip truck is beyond my ability to understand?

For Rowly, maddog
Even for Reagan, the refusal to deal with Arafat was hindsight. Ronnie actually told Sharon and Begin to tell Israeli troops not to shoot Arafat (in fact, Israeli snipers had him in an HK's cross-hairs) and then rescued the turd from Beirut to Tunis on a USAF C-130. I'm not sure if Reagan recognised his mistake before or after Achille Lauro hijacking, but that's moot--had Ford had such a policy (proof he didn't--the turd addressed the UN in NYC in 1974), it would have been to his credit (though not contributive in 1976 election).

maddog
You are correct about Clinton.Reagan would not deal with Arafat because he was a terrorist, but Bill took him in and paid the price when Arafat snubbed his deal.

Arafat and all the other terrorists in the Middle East want one thing...the destruction of Israel. It's not the land they want.It is the dead bodies.

If we denounced Israel, all the Middle East would love us.Israel would be decimated, though. When we elect a government who turns it's back on Israel,it will be over for us. God will not look kindly on us any more.In my opinion.

Taft
so sorry to hear about your dad. Please accept my condolences. Was he a POW? Sorry about the late reply. Been in another part of the state most of the day.

Yay libs,
Way to support Hamas, Al-Qaeda, N. Korea, N. Vietnam, Russia. Hey, they love you too and hope that a Democrat wins the election. You're in good company. No wonder we call you traitors.

Carter is a major embarrassment
Somehow, it seems to me that Jimmy Carter is committing treason against his own country. He has gone down in history as a failed president whose administration caused tremendous damage to our country. He was booted from office in a landslide victory by Ronald Reagan in 1980.

If it is legally possible, we should charge Carter with high treason for meeting with our terrorist enemies. America has had a no tolerance/no negotiation policy with terrorist organizations since the Reagan Administration. For Jimmy Carter to violate that policy on many occassions without regard to official US policy should be considered a criminal matter.

Bill Clinton invited Arafat to the White House as an honored guest and Arafat himself went on to laugh and say NO to a peace agreement with Israel. How much does it take to convince Democrats that peace with crazed terrorists is not possible. All they know is kill kill kill.

Carter Should Be Put To Pasture
I can't believe there are people here that are supporting Carter's decisions.

I agree with the writer's that say his passport should be revoked. I also believe he should be tried for treason. I feel there are a few others that could be tried along with him.

BTW - to the person who made the snide remark regarding Oliver North - two wrongs don't make a right.

And if you don't agree with conservatism - why are you reading the blogs. I stay away from the far left liberal garbage because personally I have my own mind. Plus - I don't feel like taking a shower after I read the internet.

Carter is wrong. Carter was wrong when he was President. Carter needs to retire to the pastures and leave foreign dignitary work to people who still have their wits about them and do not associate with American hating pastors or thugs who performed terrorist acts (even though Obama insists on calling them just "detestable acts").

MDoggg writes: "What do you mean, we,
anne? You never lifted a finger for your country..."

And exactly HOW would you know anything .... especially about that? You DON'T!

But here's the thing, "Doggg" rabid dogggs are often "put down" and given your posts, you qualify as "rabid."

Akagi wrties: "Pompous--yes,

ingignificant and irrelevant and inconsequential--no more than you and perhaps much less."

Ummmm.... Not exactly! You see, we're discussing the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA... and it's my country. So, in such discussions, I am far more significant and relevant than you!!!

As far as the other things... arresting that doddering idiot, Carter, of course I know they're not going to arrest him, so there is nothing to "get over."

So, the bottom line, Akagi, butt out!!!!

Trying to redeem a legacy
If there's anything worse than ONE former Democratic president (Bill Clinton) engaging in all sort of busybody behaviour and naively idealistic but detrimental ventures in the public arena to try to build a legacy for himself that he p..i..s..s..e..d away as president by incompetence or recklessness, it's TWO! Carter remembers only too well what brought down his presidency: his inability to deal with a situation in the Middle East (the Iranian hostage incident) - and unfortunately for him, his COUNTRYMEN remember it all too well, too. So, maybe he figures that if he can balance the scales somehow by presumably "solving" the Israeli-Palestinian issue (which he tried to do as president as well and succeeded at about as well as he succeeded in getting our hostages in Iran released speedily). The fact that Carter apparently is willing to put Israel on the sacrificial altar, like Abraham did Isaac, obviously doesn't bother him, only this time there won't be a stand-in that allows the intended sacrifice to come off the altar and live another day. Carter has clearly become a bitter old man, and of course bitter people will tend to lash out at others. If Carter had stuck to building houses for Habitat for Humanity, he might well have left as his legacy for history the judgment of being a man of distinguished character if not necessarily distinguished competence as president (Richard Nixon was a man of clear competence as president, but who remembers him anymore with any positive feeling even WITHOUT bringing Watergate into the equation). Now Carter has become THE poster child of a Leninist "useful idiot".

"And, a few experts on terrorism have stated that Carter's trip was the WORST thing any ex-president has done in modern times!"

I don't disagree.

"is a single federal statute making it a crime for a citizen to confer with foreign governments against the interests of the United States. Specifically, it prohibits citizens from negotiating with other nations on behalf of the United States without authorization."

But Carter isn't doing that. First, Hamas is not a foreign government. Second, Carter is going in his capacity as a private citizen and is not confering with a foreign government nor is he negotiating on its behalf of the US against its will.

Now, I suppose the US could try to claim he is supporting terrorism by visiting a terrorist organization, but it be hard to make that stick as would trying to revoke his passport.

And any arrest of Carter would simply make you look like a bunch of idiots.

I'd have loved to see Lian Zhan back in 2005 arrested too, and that didn't happen either, so get over it.

"a pompous little insignificant, irrelevant, inconsequential, twerp with a temper."

Pompous--yes, ingignificant and irrelevant and inconsequential--no more than you and perhaps much less. Someone with a temper, guilty as charged. I make McCain on his worse days seem calm.

I meant "trollop" actually...so a mistake on one vowel.

One of our moles in Abscam Johnny's Scranton office recently overheard a telecon between the Congressman and His Lairdship. The mole was able to wire tap Johnny's cell phone and he was none the wiser. Johnny told His Lairdship that Senator Obama's hatchet men had uncovered some covert activities by the Skull and the Forehead that would derail our candidate's quest for the POTUS. If this is made public, our candidate may have to flee to Southern Patagonia where there is no extradition agreement. Johnny told His Lairdship to get his fat behind off the bar stool and start doing damage control. Furthermore stop pestering the TH folks. You are fighting a losing battle.

If Carter likes talking to...
terrorists so much, he should go find OBL and talk him into coming out of his cave. Maybe he could convince ol' Osama that he wouldn't be shot on sight.

Nah, that would never happen. Carter would probably just ask him if he would like "Habitat" to come fix up the cave.

PriceyInTheOC
Thanks for the inspiration. New parody on my blog to Carter the "ding a ling"

On a different thread Akagi writes: "You

***********************************************
First of all, I think the word you're looking for is "trollope."

Well, well, well... you OBVIOUSLY think quite highly of your little self, now don't you???
You can't quite handle it when others don't think as highly of you as you do.

And, OBVIOUSLY you DO CARE VERY MUCH what I (and those of us on TH) think about YOU, otherwise you wouldn't react as you did; a pompous little insignificant, irrelevant, inconsequential, twerp with a temper.

Get back to us if and when you grow up and have something significant to contribute...

Meantime, ikeep in mind, WE WON THE WAR!!!

But thanks for the chuckles. :-)

bob writes: "Akagi is right .....

As much as Carter's little egotistically driven endeavors disgust me, the man is breaking no laws."

Both of you are WRONG!!!!

There is the problem with that pesky old Logan Act!

"The Logan Act (18 U.S.C.A. § 953 [1948]) is a single federal statute making it a crime for a citizen to confer with foreign governments against the interests of the United States. Specifically, it prohibits citizens from negotiating with other nations on behalf of the United States without authorization."

If anyone in DC had any... Carter would be arrested the minute he stepped off his plane when it landed on US soil.

And, a few experts on terrorism have stated that Carter's trip was the WORST thing any ex-president has done in modern times!

Blind to evil
Old Carter is blind to evil. He looks at himself in the mirror every morning and cannot see it...I guess we shouldn't be surprised he doesn't recognize it in Hamas either.

He should be prosecuted under the Logan Act....or worse.

inthemajority writes:
"Although you must admit that Carter is much more respected than the convicted felons who sold out the country in the Iran-Contra debacle. Consider the source".

As I'm sure it's been said before but it all depends on who is doing the respecting.

Well, one thing...
...about it. Jimmy ain't worried about getting kidnapped over there, he knows that Hamas knows we wouldn't pay the ransom.

Being one of the blindly ignorant is true bliss.

Akagi is right
As much as Carter's little egotistically driven endeavors disgust me, the man is breaking no laws. He is not doing anything that could elevate him to the level of traitor. As for "giving peace and comfort to the enemy," one can be accused of that for any number of sketchy ambiguous reasons. But until Jimmy decides to fund terrorist bomb making facilities or arm our enemies with actual weapons, then his crime hardly rises above arrogance and stupidity.

Untrue
"The outcome's in doubt? No kidding! NEWSFLASH: Outcomes are ALWAYS in doubt until afterward. World War II was 'a major debacle with outcome in doubt' - until the Autumn of 1945."

The outcome of the war in WWII was not in doubt by the summer of 1944. The Germans were in full retreat on both the Eastern and Western Fronts and the US was moving into Mariana Islands which would open up Japan to a long range bombing campaign that would last until the end of the war, to the west, the US Army forces were just south of the southern Philippines and would land there by early fall.

By 1944 there was no doubt who would win the war, only the when was in question.

Oh and one more thing, little Anne
"Because he knows ... or should know by no, that nobody reads is drivel, nor do they care......"

You sure have an inflated opinion of yourself, do you take daily TH polls on what TH people read or care about? How do you know people don't read it? Since a number of people responded to his post it seems that would disprove your assertion.

MDogg and all other Jimmah Apologists
1957- Little Rock Central HS integrated

1964- Comprehensive US federal civil rights legislation passed

1976- James Earl Carter elected POTUS

1978- President Carter finally catches up with history and leaves his segregated Baptist church

Oh and Anne I forgot
"If anyone in DC had any... Carter would be arrested the minute he stepped off his plane when it landed on US soil."

Care to present the charges under Federal law you'd use to arrest him? And once you do that care to examine how likely it would be for these charges to stick. You think people call the US a Nazi-regime now, just you try that and see. Oh and good news Anne, the US has dropped to #2 in Europe as the country seen as the biggest threat to peace in the world.

But foolish little Anne
Carter isn't negotiating with any foreign nations on behalf of the United States, he is going to meet the leader of a non-state actor as a private citizen, care to expand how the Logan Act applies here?

Now what you could claim is that his passport should be revoked and in Haig v. Agee (1981) the court agreed that the Executive has broad discretion in regards to taking away passports, but do you think that Bush would ever go that far?

But the Logan Act, sorry, no dice.

You can try
"I frankly agree with Rep. Sue Myrick's call to have Carter's passport revoked..."

You think the Bush Administration is going to do that? Dream on.

Re: "What you won't read at TH"
""Pentagon institute calls Iraq war 'a major debacle' with outcome 'in doubt'"

The outcome's in doubt? No kidding! NEWSFLASH: Outcomes are ALWAYS in doubt until afterward. World War II was 'a major debacle with outcome in doubt' - until the Autumn of 1945. This is supposed to be a "news" headline? Why don't they give us a headline that's really informative, like "Telephone Psychics Are Phonies" or "Chances of Winning a Multi-Million Dollar Lottery Are Extremely Low".

So Joseph,
what's your point? Do you think Israel has a right to exist? If not, just come right out and say so.

Do you think the Iranian President's anti-semitism and stated goal of wiping Israel off the map is acceptable? If so, just tell us.

If you want the US to pull all support for Israel, fine. Take it up with your elected reps in DC and the paperpushers at the State Dept.

As for history lessons: 1948, without much support from Harry Truman, Israel becomes an internationally recognized nation. The "Palestinians" (a label coined by the international Left in the 1960's- but you're such an astute historian, I'm sure you know that)then immediately went to war against the Israelis and THEY LOST. Many of them high tailed it outta there, believing they'd get their revenge in the near future.

1968- Syria, Egypt, Jordan, along with numerous backers go to war against Israel AND THEY LOST.

When you start a war and lose, your land is gonna be taken and your people are gonna have to bow down to the victor. That's the way of the world Mr. Smartypants. I bet you didn't feel one bit sorry for the people of East Germany after WWII.

You complain about Bush invading Iraq, but are mum about unprovoked, illegal wars waged against Israel. That's not being an apologist for Israel, that's just letting you know you can't have it both ways.

Carter

It seems the more one is against the Constitution, not just by words alone, but by deed and actions, are they touted as some sort of hero. This guy violated his military oath, laws and the Constitution. To that there is no doubt, as it is history.

Rather than hunt down Al Queda, he invades Iraq for Norman Podhoretz, William Kristol, et.al Being bogged down with the Iraq war, he neglects enforcing the border. An illegal invasion of 12-20 million people come across. So not only are middle class Americans helping Mexico by plant relocations, they are also expected to be the relief valve for Mexico's excess population.
The usd loses more than half its value to the major currencies and the biggest wealth transfer from Americans to foreigners takes place. This is not the Japanese overpaying for US real estate in the 1980s , it is holders of major currencies buying US assets on the cheap.

Thanks for the info. I first voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980. I vote republican except locally where I have to vote democrat since there are no republicans. I live in Chicago. I want a strong America, the kind I grew up in. Conservative republicans like myself, agree with Bush senior and Gen. Scowcroft that the invasion of Iraq was a blunder. I support HR 4088 the SAVE act. It aims to deal with the illegal immigrant population by denying them work and thereby forcing them gradually to go back to their respective countries. I am a member of NUMBERSUSA . Our goal is to reduce immigration both legal and illegal . I believe in the first and second amendment. I think that Charleton Heston was a great and thinking American.

Hmmm, now we know where the Jewish refugees from the German concentration camps went to ! To Palestine ! So in order to create a modern day Israel as Theodore Herzl had envisioned, so called Palestinians had to be ethnically cleansed by Begin, Shamir, Sharon, et al... The only example of recolonialization in the 20th century. The President of Iran has a very good point: what did the Palestinians have to do with the fact that european Jews wanted a homeland and in the process had to endure deportation to concentration camps in wartime ?

beeach about Dubya's failure to broker a peace treaty between Israel and the so-called Palestinians, then you better keep goin' and beeach about all his predecessors' failures in that regard as well.

I'm no fan of Dubya's policies, but let's get one thing straight- W J Clinton, Ol' Man Bush, Ronnie Raygun, Jimmah Cottah, Fall Down Ford, Tricky Dick, LBJ- all did nothing to "bring peace to the Middle East." I guarantee you the next POTUS is gonna fail as well. That doesn't mean they're no good; it just means they're not a miracle worker.

Were you around when Truman and Eisenhower were POTUS? Both of them were pretty lukewarm about Israel. Maybe you otta have a se'ance and bring one of 'em back.

Frosty
There is a BBC documentary on youtube about the Liberty. Quite frankly, I am very glad that President Carter is involved in the middleeast.
I am sick and tired of marxist-trotskyite neocons and their fellow travellors using America to acheive their zionist goals. I am an American citizen, not a citizen of Israel . I want the President of the United States to stop squanderring our resources and wasting our precious soldiers for Israel's benefit. I do not care if Israel is threatened by Syria, Iran, or any other country. Israel has a nuclear arsenal and has been receiving billions upon billions of US taxpayer dollars. I do not care if Israel is the only democracy in the middleeast. It is still an outlaw nation that is defying UN Resolution 242 which was passed unanimously with the vote of the US. I want the next American President to stop ruining our country by trying to reshape politically other parts of the world.

I beg to differ
"His [Carter] legacy is the most incompetent administration in history."

I wouldn't hold your breath on that statement given the current state of affairs.

What the World Knows
I think the Dems ran Carter for prez as a joke! Following the Nixon/Ford administrations, tyhe Dems wanted to prove anyone could beat the GOP.

The ONLY non-joke dignity of the Carter admin was Rosylyn - favorably compared to Jackie. Carter was an egotistical joke then and still is. His legacy is the most incompetent administration in history.

His two most worthy accomplishments were: 1. fighting off an attack swamp rabbit; and 2. admitting the influence of Playboy magazine ("yes, I looked at Playboy and sinner in my heart", but I didn't play with myself).

In HIS mind, he is a legendary leader and the greatest president we have ever had. He resents, perhaps even hates, Americans for failure to recognize his greatness (Reagan whipped his butt).

Now, as Ollie states, Carter is on another ego trip. He ain't stupid! He KNOWS he is snubbing our politicial leaders - from both sides of the aisle - and is disparaging our country and allies by giving "aid and comfort" to our enemies.

Could he, just maybe, be engaging in a little "pay back"?

Funny, almost - - - kinda...
Unless I'm mistaken, Bob Novak referred to Carter as the most dishonest person he'd known, right? And then there was the quote from Lillian Carter (his mom) that sometimes she wished she'd've "remained a virgin."
Also to be concidered, thanking ol' Jimmy for being the incompetent dolt he was when Ronald Reagan decided to run for president...
What an interesting life, 'ay?!?

part 4

I know that the Court of Inquiry transcript that has been released to the public is not the same one that I certified and sent to Washington. I know this because it was necessary, due to the exigencies of time, to hand-correct and initial a substantial number of pages. I have examined the released version of the transcript and did not see any pages that bore my hand corrections and initials. Also, the original did not have any deliberately blank pages, as the released version does. In addition, the testimony of Lt. Lloyd Painter concerning the deliberate machine-gunning of the life rafts by the Israeli torpedo boat crews, which I distinctly recall being given at the Court of Inquiry and including in the original transcript, is now missing.
I join the survivors in their call for an honest inquiry. Why is there no room to question Israel – even when it kills Americans – in the halls of Congress?
Let the survivors testify. Let me testify. Let former intelligence officers testify that they received real-time Hebrew translations of Israeli commanders instructing their pilots to sink “the American ship.”
Surely uncovering the truth about what happened to American servicemen in a bloody attack is more important than protecting Israel. And surely 40 years is long enough to wait.

Boston served as chief counsel to the Navy's Court of Inquiry into the attack on the U.S. Navy intelligence ship Liberty. He also served as a naval aviator in World War II on the carrier Yorktown and as an FBI agent prior to his assignment to the Navy's Judge Advocates General Corps. He is a graduate of the the College of William and Mary School of Law and a resident of Coronado.

part 3

We boarded the crippled ship at sea and interviewed survivors. The evidence was clear. We both believed with certainty that this attack was a deliberate effort to sink an American ship and murder its entire crew.
I am certain the Israeli pilots and commanders who had ordered the attack knew the ship was American. I saw the bullet-riddled American flag that had been raised by the crew after their first flag had been shot down completely. I heard testimony that made it clear the Israelis intended there be no survivors. Not only did they attack with napalm, gunfire and missiles, Israeli torpedo boats machine-gunned at close range three life rafts that had been launched in an attempt to save the most seriously wounded.
I am outraged at the efforts of Israel's apologists to claim this attack was a case of “mistaken identity.”
Adm. Kidd told me that after receiving the president's cover-up orders, he was instructed to sit down with two civilians from either the White House or the Department of Defense and rewrite portions of the court's findings. He said, “Ward, they're not interested in the facts. It's a political matter, and we cannot talk about it.” We were to “put a lid on it” and caution everyone involved never to speak of it again.

part 2

The ensuing cover-up has haunted us for 40 years. What does it imply for our national security, not to mention our ability to honestly broker peace in the Middle East, when we cannot question Israel's actions – even when they kill Americans?
Today, survivors of Israel's cruel attack will gather in Washington, D.C., to honor their dead shipmates as well as the mothers, sisters, widows and children they left behind. They will continue to ask for a fair and impartial congressional inquiry that, for the first time, would allow the survivors themselves to testify publicly.
For decades, I have remained silent. I am a military man, and when orders come in from the secretary of defense and president of the United States, I follow them. However, attempts to rewrite history and concern for my country compel me to share the truth.
Adm. Kidd and I were given only one week to gather evidence for the Navy's official investigation, though we both estimated that a proper Court of Inquiry would take at least six months.

Barbaric attack on the USS LIberty

Time for the truth about the Liberty

By Ward Boston Jr.
June 8, 2007
Forty years ago this week, I was asked to investigate the heaviest attack on an American ship since World War II. As senior legal counsel to the Navy Court of Inquiry, it was my job to help uncover the truth regarding Israel's June 8, 1967, bombing of the Navy intelligence ship Liberty.
On that sunny, clear day 40 years ago, Israel's combined air and naval forces attacked the Liberty for two hours, inflicting 70 percent casualties. Thirty-four American sailors died, and 172 were injured. The Liberty remained afloat only by the crew's heroic efforts.
Israel claimed it was an accident. Yet I know from personal conversations with the late Adm. Isaac C. Kidd – president of the Court of Inquiry – that President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered him to conclude that the attack was a case of “mistaken identity.”

He just passed away last month. He was on a lot of morphine and had terrifying hallucinations about North Koreans being in his room. Thanks again very much.

Oliver, show some courage
Dear Oliver,

President Carter is an honest man and a courageous one at that. Your phony diatribe about terrorists fails to consider the fact that Begin, Shamir, and Sharon are the big trio when it comes to terrorism. Yet Bush called sharon a man of peace while Pope John Paul II would not even shake his hand. Oliver, you are acting like a neocon stooge. Are you so ignorant that you do not know that in 1956 the Mossad was planting bombs around our installation in Egypt and in 1967 the IDF attacked our ship the USS Liberty, strafing the life boats so as to leave no survivors ? Write to me . I want to supply you with the material.

Killer,
you need to quit performing the auto-colo-rectal exam you're working on and pay attention.

The EU (not exactly a bastion of courage) classifies Hamas as a terrorist organization. Hamas' much publicized claims of credit for homicide bombings and rocket launches into Israel against purely civilian targets belie your statement.

Carter must be on an ego trip because there is no other rational explanation for his behavior (except the possibility of lunacy, but let's give the man the benefit of the doubt).

Taft writes:

Morals?????
Working with U.S. enemies, Carter's brains cells are probably so warped by Miss Lillians imbibing
beer when nursing her brood, he's gone to never never land. Who knows, maybe Miss Lillian got a head start and he's suffering from fetal alcholo syndrome.
There is NO morality in meeting with America's enemies against the wishes of the government. The terrorists consider any affirmation by anyone they deem important in our government (Jimmy must deem himself very important), it's a propaganda win. His Carter Center is being funded by Saudi money, as well as the American taxpayer.
We know it will never happen because nothing ever does happen to traitors these days, but I think Sue Myricks is on to something. When I was in 5th grade I had to read "Man Without A Country." Phillip Nolan did less than this but was sentenced to life aboard a ship, never again to set foot on the land of his birth but still visible on the horizon. Works for me.

My dad was a Korean war vet too, and I have nothing but respect for you. Don't smoke the stuff, though in the mornings I need a few cups of joe to get kick started. I never served. The closest I came was when Carter had 18 year olds sign some card thing that would speed up the draft in case he decided to go to war with Iran, 1979. Thanks

Carter is the satanfather of modern
terrorists. It was his total, complete, oblivious, foolish, naive, asinine stupidity, and arrogance which gave rise to the Ayatollah Cockamamie and the clueless clowns of the islamic absolutists. He is a doddering fool who wants desperately to become relavent before he takes his dirt nap, and he wants history to see him as simething other than what he is: the kind of Neville Chamberlain, Quisling, and other fools of history who had no spine.

Killer - where did you get your lobotomy. I hope you got a good deal on it. Anyone that defends "the Peanut" has serious moral, intellectual and reality issues. Carter was a dumb-butt, leftist wanker with money when was he elected Gov. of Ga.; it's hard to believe, but he's been going down hill, as fast as he can go, ever since. He was a disaster as a President and has since used his time in the White House as leverage to support and abett every scumbag lowlife dictator he can close enuf to kiss on the mouth. How many American soldiers are dead because "the Grin" has forever and always provided encouragement and support to terrorists and avowed enemies of the U.S.

As a native born citizen of Georgia, let me beg you - talk him into moving to where you live and then you adopt his scuzzy butt. Please, you deserve him and Georgia would be gratefull for relief from our never ending "Carter Embarrassment Syndrome. You can have his passport torn up and keep him forever; you can move him into your house and you can worship at his feet - he really likes that stuff. Suggestion
Every reference to Carter should include the word 'democrat' of 'democratic' and that includes posters here and especially in the MSM, because I think that even the most idiotic democrats are FINALLY realizing what damage this bozo is doing to the country and by extension to the democratic party.

Wildwest - your 9:18 a.m. post in the second paragraph would say "It is a sad commentary when a former democratic president sees more relevance ......"

wildwest
Maybe it's because he was such an ineffective wimp himself, so he has an admiration for people who can take charge and get things done, however despicable they might be.

OLIVER
Have you been offered another government job? This hit job, that you are attempting, only "PLAYS" in small minds.Iran-Contra is less honorable, than anything President Carter, could ever do.But,you did it.Hamas is a terrorist group, because "US" say so,no other proof.WOW!!President Carter is far more Trustworthy as a Citizen, than as a politician. That is grounds for Credibility. The Pope did not "Overshadow" Mr.Carter, they are both "Relevant".

wildwest writes: "... reasons that defy

understanding..."

Heck, it defies "imagination!"

the carter fantasy
for reasons that defy understanding carter has a facsination with third world tinpot dictators and persecutors and killers of their own people. He salutes the likes of kim jong mentally ill, mugabe, castro, in pareticularly liked the sexually confused, aids arafat.

It is a sad commentary when a former president sees more relevance with dictators than leaders of democratic countries. But at least jimmah remains consistent. He was both a lousy president and an even lousier ex-president

Boutte reminds me.....
of the retarded banjo picker in the movie Deliverance.

And Jimmah Cahtah reminds me of his half wit pappy.

They are Hate America cancer cells eating away at the flesh of our society and culture. Not to worry, though. A bit of radiation treatment will cure them.

Oh, wait! The kind of radiation they will get is non-selective. Just so the Islamists Jimmah idolizes start with a dirty bomb in Hollywood. Might take out Bill Maher and Michael Moore, too. There's some good in everything!

Boutte writes: "Carter's ME trip is
undoubtedly with the prior knowledge and approval of State."

Uh, actually you're WRONG AGAIN!

The State Dept. of course was aware... but the doddering old fool DID NOT have approval.

In fact, he was advised NOT to GO!!!!!

And then there is the problem with that pesky old Logan Act!

"The Logan Act (18 U.S.C.A. § 953 [1948]) is a single federal statute making it a crime for a citizen to confer with foreign governments against the interests of the United States. Specifically, it prohibits citizens from negotiating with other nations on behalf of the United States without authorization."

And, a few experts on terrorism have stated that Carter's trip was the WORST thing any ex-president has done in modern times!

If anyone in DC had any... Carter would be arrested the minute he stepped off his plane when it landed on US soil.

Geeze, Boutte, what does it feel like to be WRONG so OFTEN????

Actually, I would just like to see some reporter ask Carter:

"WHAT THE H*LL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?!?!?!"

as he's being handcuffed....

Boutte
If Jimmy Carter (and yes, Barack Obama) are getting bashed this week they brought it upon themselves. It's a little thing called personal accountability. They need to follow the example of Homer Simpson:

"Aw, Marge, if you're going to yell at me every time I do something stupid then I'll just stop doing stupid things."

I wish he'd just stay over there
I've often compared Carter to the British appeasers of the 1930s, but now I have to say that's unfair to the appeasers.

At least Neville Chamberlain FINALLY stood up to Hitler (albeit too late to save Poland), and at least he had the grace and good sense to shut up and fade into the woodwork once Churchill took over.

Carter would have been laying a wreath at the tomb of Frederick the Great.

carter ego trip
..."it seems that Carter has real mental problems. "
Yes,Pricey, and these problems seem to be shared by 'inthemajority.'

Jimmy Carter's Political History:

inthemajority...
...sounds like a typical college professor. I know several who are convinced that Carter is our greatest ex-President. Personally, I think Brother Billy would have done a much better job.

Swan Song
Given that he's reaching the end of a normal life span, it seems that Carter has real mental problems.

He's egomaniacal. He seems driven to grab the spotlight one more time before he bows out. To reclaim glory. To reclaim Israel/Egypt.

Instead, he courts the cheers and attention of Islamics, who, among other abominations, say it is just to enter into agreements under false pretenses and who fullly absolve themselves in breaking any agreement with infidels. What makes Carter think he's not being used as a patsy?

Oh, that's right, it's his bigger-than-humanity ego.

Ding-a-ling!

The rest of the world rightfully heaps scorn upon Carter's head for attempting serious statesmanship without portfolio. He's a known lunatic. He shouldn't be making agreements with the milkman let alone with terrorist leaders.

Re: 'inthemajority's' Inane Comments...
"Carter is much more respected than the convicted felons who sold out the country in the Iran-Contra debacle."

Sure is - by sworn terrorists, tin-pot dictators, and other avowed enemies (both internal and external) of America.

I frankly agree with Rep. Sue Myrick's call to have Carter's passport revoked - while he's still on his trip abroad. I think a prosecution for treason and sedition should be in order for this pan-Islamist/anti-Semite/Commie coddler. And doubtless he would have - if the proper authorities still had what in Hebrew would be called "beytsim."

Carter...Once again...
...shows what a pathetic excuse for a "leader" he once was. I still find it amazing that this clown managed to find a way to the White House. He's met with damn near every enemy leader of the US around the globe. And to what end? What has he accomplished other than giving these butchers legitimacy? Sounds a lot like one of the Democrat buffoons running this time around. "Can't we just talk and all get along?"

Oh... well there was that whole OPEC oil embargo, double digit mortgage rates, high unemployment, high inflation...so he has that going for him.

I guess the only good thing I can say about the man as President was that he signed the Homebrewing Bill back in '78. Thanks to Jimbo, we can at least brew our own beer and wine w/o "The Man" kicking down your door looking for excise taxes...

Ego Trip
Ollie sez: "He also has broken faith with his countrymen. He's not naive and he's not ignorant. But he is on an ego trip."

Although you must admit that Carter is much more respected than the convicted felons who sold out the country in the Iran-Contra debacle. Consider the source.
