Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- When it sailed from Simon's Bay near Cape Town, South Africa, on Feb. 25, 1852, under the command of Capt. Robert Salmond, the British paddle wheel frigate HMS Birkenhead was loaded with more than 640 men, women and children. Mostly, however, the passengers were British soldiers, their horses and ammunition. Their destination was Algoa Bay, South Africa, as reinforcements for Sir Harry Smith in the eighth campaign of the Kaffir War.

Several hours after sailing, the Birkenhead struck a rock at Danger Point in the dead of night and was instantly in distress. While many of the military men sleeping below decks drowned immediately, others who reached the main deck were told to maintain order and discipline. As the ship took on water at a brisk pace, the lifeboats were lowered, but only three of them could be used because of mechanical problems. Though he did not utter the phrase as we know it today, it was at this point in the disaster that Salmond instituted the great maritime emergency tradition to save women and children first. His troops assisted the women and children on the sinking vessel in boarding the few available lifeboats, and all of them were rescued eventually. Most of the soldiers and sailors went down with the ship.

The natural instinct of civilized human beings is to protect those who are more vulnerable in the face of danger. Civilized cultures have placed women on a pedestal not because they are less capable but because we honor them and hold them in a special place in our society.

Not so with radical Islamists. They treat women as chattel and they abuse children. Just as it is becoming increasingly incumbent upon the Iraqi people to take responsibility for their government and their future, it is increasingly imperative that responsible Muslims take a stand for human decency.

As al-Qaida's prospects for military victory continue to sink in Iraq, the terrorists there have turned Salmond's time-honored tradition of chivalry and honor on its head.

Last week, Iraqi terrorists outfitted two Muslim women with Down syndrome with IEDs and dispatched them into a busy al-Ghazi pet market in Baghdad's Jadida section. When the women reached a location where their bomb-laden bodies would cause the greatest carnage, the IEDs were detonated remotely by a cowardly Islamic radical. Apparently, al-Qaida is running short of mentally competent volunteers who want to murder fellow Muslims in the process of becoming "martyrs" for Allah.

In the aftermath of the attack, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declared that this atrocity had been perpetrated by "the most brutal and bankrupt of movements" and said it will strengthen Iraqi resolve to reject terrorism.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki condemned the attack saying, "The terrorists' use of a mentally deranged woman has uncovered the lowly ethics of these criminal gangs and their deceit and animosity toward humanity."

From Damascus, Riyadh, Amman, Ankara and Tehran, there was only silence. No Islamic leader or senior cleric rose to condemn the murder of God's most vulnerable creatures, whom mankind is entrusted to protect.

Using the handicapped, women and children for terror is nothing new for Islamic radicals. During the January 2005 Iraqi parliamentary elections, al-Qaida used a child with Down syndrome to carry out one of 38 suicide attacks at polling stations that left more than 40 people dead. In March 2005, terrorists detonated an explosives-rigged vehicle with two children in the back seat after U.S. soldiers let it through a Baghdad checkpoint. The vehicle had been allowed to pass when soldiers saw the children and became less suspicious. Once the vehicle got through the checkpoint, the adults parked it and ran, detonating the car with the children inside.

In late November 2005, a young mentally disabled woman was used by al-Qaida to detonate an explosive belt, killing herself and seven other innocent Iraqis, including a child. When coalition forces moved to disrupt al-Qaida networks operating in Diyala province in central Iraq Jan. 30, they encountered armed terrorists using women and children as human shields. According to Maj. Gen. Kevin Bergner, "Al-Qaida in Iraq not only targets women and children but as we are witnessing in recent months, they also prey on their innocence and have used them as suicide bombers."

This week, Jennifer Griffin, my colleague at FOX News, reported on videotapes captured in an al-Qaida lair that show young Muslim boys, ages 6-14, being trained by al-Qaida to become terrorists. In radical Islam, the slogan "women and children first" has taken on a whole new meaning.

Great, great column Col. about..
....a subject the MSM has only mentioned in passing and then only on page "last" of the news sections or maybe during an advertisement on TV so no one could hear it. Hillary's tears are way more important than pointing out that we are fighting animals (swine I think) disguised as human beings. These Muslims are disgusting and I sure hope we are still dipping all ammunition in pig pis's.

Disgusting, disgusting, disgusting, but true examples of the "People of the 'religion of peace'".

BTW, nice history primer on Capt. Robert Salmond.

Pathetic!

Back to kindergarten for you! You need to restart your feeble education and see if you actually have any redeeming qualities.

Is there nobody in charge of Islam?
It seems as though no one is providing moral guidance and direction in that faith.

The recent comments by the Archbishop of Canterbury that there is room for sharia law in the English legal system makes one wonder whether anyone with a modicum of intellengence is charge in the Protestant faith either!

It's just as I've been saying...
...Nothing is sacred to these soulless scoundrels except for power.

The more I read of stories like this, the more I'm convinced that these Al-Qaeda are not men, but demons who hide in the shape of men. Who aside from the Evil One himself could conceive of something so depraved as this?

BTW, I join with Black Cherokee in giving kudos for the sad tale of the HMS Birkenhead. I always wondered where that "women and children first" thing had its start...

Kilroy
You are a loser. And you totally miss the point. Our fighting men and women get to make the choice for themselves, asshat! They volunteer to be trained to defend their Country. Unlike the Muslim extremists who are taking these little boys and brainwashing them and not letting them decide for themselves what is the right thing. STFU.

joe_america ...what we are seeing IS..
The Moral guidance and Direction being provided by the Leaders of the Religion of Peace....
Protests to the Contrary are simply misdirections (Lies) to keep the Infidel asleep...
As is totally acceptable and promoted under their culture :)

Taft
You make the point:

Islamists take control, and others suffer. I think that was the point Col North was making. He's right, you know. That's why there is this fight. It may well be our Ruhr Valley, a fight avoided in 1936, and the price was the fight in 1939-1945.

You'd think the progressive, nuanced crowd would appreciate the illiberal barbarians we are set against for what they are, and that some action on our part might preempt a worsening of the situation in the long run.

I mean, rather than engage in opportunistic or short sighted political grabs.

Dave
I don't think the same analogy can be applied to Iraq. A better one is the US and North Korea. We stepped back to save what was possible to save and not embroil ourselves in a world war that we didn't need or would help anyone. North I think is wrong too. Bombing and disrespecting the Muslims Iraq are great arbiters of radicalism and extremism.

Taft, do you actually believe something
...coming from NPR?
Jeeezzzz, how naive!

Women and children first?
Only this morning I was standing on the subway, peacefully praying the rosary to myself as I do every day, when a snot-nosed boy in his early to mid teens said "I suppose you think I oughta give you my seat." I looked at him and raised an eyebrow, and he elaborated, "Well YOU wanted to be liberated so you just f***ing stand!"

All I said was, "If my son talked to your mother that way, I would slap his head around backwards."

While this interesting conversation was going on, several middle aged men sat passively on their rumps, doing and saying nothing. Agreeing with the disrespectful snot-nose, no doubt, in their hearts.

There is precious little respect for women and children left in North America today.

JD'S Hansome Son
indignantly complains that Bill Clinton "molested" Monica Lewinsky. Come on, my man, she was a consenting adult [and happy to oblige]! I suppose a hundred years from now the muck-raking right-wing morality-police will be recycling the "bridge incident" involving Edward Kennedy. Give it a rest! Since that incident surely ten thousand morale conservatives have driven their families "off bridges" to their death [and you all righteously proclaimed those deaths "Gods Will"]. You make yourselves look like a bunch of sniveling whiners who can find nothing contemporary to _itch about. The Republican Party "hair on fire" tirades about bed-room issues have trivialized the truly serious problems our society now endures from their neglect [insane balance of trade deficits with China and OPEC nations, off-shoring of our jobs and manufacturing capability, irrational energy policies, etc.].

Women and Children first
Kilroy doesn't deserve a response people!
Audi 10 not getting a seat doesn't equate to strapping a bomb on you, although I would have slapped the punks head around backwards. He's a result of America's permissive attitude towards raising children today.

This story reminds me of the Viet Cong treatment of women and children that I witnessed on Nam. It is thoroughly disgusting! It also should remind us all who we are dealing with.

Islamic Depravity
Islamic Extremism, Islamic Fascism, al-Qaida; these are all one in the same and represent the true existence of Satan in our world. The true God of Creation considers such senseless acts of depravity an abomination against his creation! The mindless zealots who practice such atrocities are under the total control of the Devil, who they pray to as Allah. There is no way to reach them and bring them back into the light; they are lost soles mistakenly looking for seventy two virgins as their reward. Too bad none have returned from their chosen heaven to report how they are truly in Hell being eviscerated continually by seventy two Demons each!

RPG
Are you a Christian? Just wondering.

Taft
Something about the open-minded NPR crowd: they see right wing religious boogiemen behind all efforts not socialistic. Dunno why. Like the weather, it just is.

So it is your take (or NPR's) that our military is the cause of the rot in Iraq? That they are )_doing_ it the bad stuff? I think it is the Islamists taking the opportunity of our invasion to wreak havoc for, uh, what, a better future?

Taft "From Foreign Policy" @ 11:24 AM
First NPR and then "From Foreign Policy". I must assume that you mean from our "State Dept.". Also, your quote of U.N. statistics.

You, sir, have to broaden your informational resources from the providers of communist propaganda (NPR, Foggy Bottom & Turtle Bay) to at least TownHall and FoxNews (not the MOST forthright, but too great a transition might cause convulsions or worse).

TBC :>)

I keep forgetting...
that this is the religion of peace!!

Dave
I don't blame our military and I don't think NPR does. What they are doing is very brave and the current spite of calm is truly remarkable. I just don't think, taking out Saddam, without better planning or without wiser council, i.e.. a drunk Chalabi, or idiots like Feith, and Wolfowitz. I'm glad Saddam is dead and gone, but I wonder if it was the right approach and also am critical of anyone who might think women or children are now better off than before.

The Black Cherokee
Sorry, that was a sloppy post. I mean the Magazine/site Foreign policy.

Whatever their problems, all Iraqis, including women and children, are FREER now than they were under Saddam.
Or are you one of those who prefers to be safe and enslaved than free?
Tell that to the black slaves here prior to the emancipation.

Quit lumping women and children together. Women work in their own interests with little regard for children.

You say there is little respect for women in North America, well I ask you in what way women show any respect to men.

I am glad that young man had the courage to speak his mind. Hopefully the lack of response from the other men is an indication that men are finally catching onto the fact that chivalry needs to be killed. In modern America chivalry is a tool women use against men and children to acquire superior rights for themselves.

Kilroy was here.
You submorons don't get the point.Real conservatives do not let women do their fighting for them.Ronald Reagan a real conservative like myself, would never let our military be used for social engineering like mr.republocrat Bush.

Taft, I went to your link and....
...it takes you (ultimately) to the Carnegie Foundation for International Peace. With the likes of Alger Hiss as a past president and Jamie Gorlick currently on its board, one has to know that this is AT BEST a communist organization if not something subversive to the U.S.! They have always been against the war in Iraq (not neutral) and I would be totally skeptical of any information provided by them on any subject.

No, "Nobody" is in charge
If you're not a born-again Christian, this is hard to understand, but I'll do my best to explain. When one becomes a Christian, one enters into a relationship with Jesus Christ. Through Bible study and prayer, we can come to know the mind of God. It's not perfect. Some people still mistake their own will for God's will, but by and large, the Christians I'm close with care about following God's will more than their own. I am such and often I have to set aside what I would want to happen in order to do what God wants me to do. So, ultimately, flesh-and-blood will aside, God is in charge of Christianity and this is why you don't see us going to blow up things or people. Jesus commissioned us to go and tell the world about Him, not to kill the world for Him. Dead people can't accept Christ as Savior, so we are most definitely not called to kill people in the name of Jesus.

Islam has no god behind it. It was a made-up religion designed to line to pockets of Mohammed and his cronies and it remains a really good method of social control. God wants you to do something glorious for Him and He hates anyone who isn't like you. There's no mechanism for self-correction -- ala Bible study. Most Muslims cannot read Arabic and reading the Koran in anything other than Arabic is considered useless. So, "nobody" is in charge of Islam. And, it shows in mutilated bodies of people throughout the Muslim world.

The solution is to preach the gospel to them so that Jesus, Savior of the world, can be in charge rather than whatever mentally ill mullah or warlord manages to grab the spotlight. Easier said than done, but by the grace and power of God, it is attainable.

Scott66
You are fortunate indeed that you are not my son. Disrespect and rudeness throws sand into a machine that doesn't run that well in the first place; it is an act of sabotage that does no good in the end. And if you really believe that chivalry is something invented to spoil your fun, you need to grow up.

Actually I believe Robert Heinlein said that the reason to save women and children first is that men need women to give birth to their heirs, and children to reinforce their position within the tribe. In other words, they need us as counters in their game of King of the Mountain. Not so different from what animals in the wild do, nor Arabs in the desert, is it? And what's the first thing the tribe does when it takes over new ground? Why it kills the men and children and rapes the women! Nothing particularly civilized about that.

TBC
The current president of the Carnegie Foundation looks fine to me.

"Jessica Tuchman Mathews is daughter of Pulitzer Prize winning Historian Barbara Tuchman. Her husband is former Air Force General Charles G. Boyd, president of the public interest group Business Executives for National Security."

A former member was John Foster Dulles! Pretty hawkish that.

I like your approach though, that is looking behind the curtain to see waht lies there. Very Smart.

Taft, Civility rules the day!
Thanks for being civil.

TBC ~:>)

Audi R10
Well AudiR10 I agree with you on one point - I am indeed fortunate not to be your son. My mother did not raise me to roll over to individuals based on their gender.

Again, please give me some examples of how our culture encourages women to show respect to men. Typical of modern American women you seem to want it to be a one way street.

Men are not the only sex to have inherited negative traits from our past. Perhaps you saw the recent research showing 75% of women admitted they would marry for money even while 71% acknowledged they expected such marriages would end in divorce. Obviously many women still plan to use men for the resources they can provide regardless of consequences. This female attribute is no doubt a survival and reproductive strategy from the past.

The difference is that men have tried to conquer our past both individually and through society, laws and culture, and become something better than we were. Women on the other hand have tried to codify their bad behavior into law and men have stood aside and allowed it to happen in no small part because of chivalry.

Islam
As always Col. North, you have nailed the subject. I would submit that there are no radical or moderate Muslims, however, there are only "MUSLIMS', they all study from the same book (the Koran), and it plainly states that all infidels are to be converted, killed, or subjagated. No if, ands, or buts.

As auroawathcer said, it is a religion that was made up by Muhammed, but not only to line his own pockets, but to do so by gaining power over all the people. And make no mistake about it, this "Jihad" is about power to control the people. In truth, Islam is not a real religion, it is a method of gaining control of people. Lenin said " religion is the opiate of the masses". Muhammed knew this, and used it centuries before Lenin to gain control of the towel heads.

The Old Coot

Scott 66
Who cares about the chair; you're cheering this young man swearing at a total stranger, just for standing there. She hadn't done anything to him, not provoked him in any way, and he verbally attacked her, using language that is acknowledged as too foul for the airwaves, and you're cheering him on?

I don't like what the feminist movement has come to, either, but please, let us return to civility as we argue our causes.

That young man should have his mouth washed out with soap. THEN address the issue of whether or not it's proper to give up your seat to a woman on a subway.

My general rule is - if they look more feeble or more tired than I am, I'll give it up, regardless of age or gender. I have been feeble and tired, myself, and know how much the gesture is appreciated.

Further, do you cheer the young man's position because it was directed toward an uncomplaining, unencumbered woman? Would you cheer if it had been directed toward a 9-month's pregnant woman with a toddler on one hip and a bag of groceries on another? A pregnant woman should always be offered a seat on a subway, for safety's sake. Due to the jerking motion of the subway, she is at risk of falling, as all standing passengers are. However, if she falls, she could harm or miscarry the baby.

I would have given you my seat, AudiR10
Too bad you live up there in Yankeeland with the illiberal liberals. Down here in the South, we still believe in chivalry.

And the last big bombing in Afghanistan
was provided by a two year old strapped full of C4 and sent into a market place.

The people who moan and groan about the number of civilians killed in the Middle East and condemn American soldiers always overlook that most civilian deaths are caused by other Iraqis and al Quaida elements who don't care about how many non-conmbatants are killed and are happy to hide behind the skirts of women and in ambulances and hospitals and private homes in order to complain about American brutality when soldiers go in after them.

Ironic quote from article
"As al-Qaida's prospects for military victory continue to sink in Iraq, the terrorists there have turned Salmond's time-honoured tradition of chivalry and honour on its head".

Generally, those familiar with Muslim-related history can see that such chivalry WAS/IS NOT generally a tradition amongst Muslims with (perhaps) the exception of Sufis such as Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan.

Big Bad John...

He reminds me of Reagan in a certain way...

I think this Arizona cowboy has no problem stepping on the "launch" button in the middle of the night.

If I were a US enemy... I would be very worried about a US President with nothing to lose, and suffering from occasional flash-backs :)

THOSE PEOPLE MAKE ME SICK
That's about all that can be said about those subhuman beings. They're truly sickening.

Of course by now everyone has learned of the young woman from Utah working for a relative of George Bush (a nephew?) in Saudi Arabia. It seems there was a power outage in the office, and all took "refuge" in a Starbucks.

The young woman made the mistake of sitting at a table with (I believe) the Bush relative. For that offense she was arrested, strip-searched, given a trial, told that she was a sinner and was going to burn in hell.

News such as this really makes most Americans angry. In particular, I believe, does it make American women angry.

I want to know who strip-searched this "criminal." Odds are that it was a bunch of slathering, drooling algae-lappers who fought each other over the "chore" of the strip-search.

Those people make me sick.

JD's Crazy Son
"Progressive women fantasize about being the next one molested by a Clinton or driven over a bridge by Ted Kennedy. This is because they're so evolved, hip and smart. Oh yes, they're diverse and progressive too. I almost forgot."

Right. That's exactly what we are fantasizing about.

AudiR10
Nothing NOW has said or done justifies lack of civility by either sex. The PC policies of Now don't justify lack of kindness or recognition of such factors as age, pregnancy, or physical weakness. However, NOW has provided a wonderful excuse for the cheap shot artists of both sexes to show disdain for all the above, and including chivalry, the most endangered of all.

Veterans For Civilization
Dear Colonel North:

The ultimate worth of any society is expressed in its attitudes toward women and children. Children are born innocent and helpless and, thus, must be nurtured and protected at all hazards. Women are the source of children and the prime factors in their nurturement and moral guidance. Men exist to protect and provide for both... at the cost of their lives, if necessary.

No one appreciates this more than veterans, to whom this endeavor became a ritualized profession that extended well beyond their own family group. And those values for which we served hallmark the highest ideals of any healthy society. Our declining recognition of this within our own civilization (i.e. socialism, pornography, miseducation and anti-Christianity) worry me more than the external forces of barbarism.

Yet, one leads to the other. One defends civilization proactively, both internally and externally. So we do in the Middle East. As fascism, anarchism and communism arose as aberrant concepts in the West (and were defeated with much travail) so must the challenge of Islamic fundamentalism and all its savage doctrines be likewise confronted. Similarly, we must combat the forces of darkness at home.

In both conflicts, America's veterans, dedicated to love of God and country above self, must forever lead the way. We must never cease to promote, by word and deed, that respect for women and love of children is what true men (and civilization) is all about.

Any doubts now?
After the use of these two women with Down's syndrome by terrorists, anyone who is still in doubt about the nature of the threat America faces from Islamic terror, if anyone could still possibly have had any doubts even prior to this incident, is in a terminal state of denial and willing blindness. There are those who would say "Well, if America weren't in Iraq, they wouldn't be, either!" To such people, I have one question: even if I accept just for the sake of argument that America brought them to Iraq, did America also teach them to use children and mentally disabled women in homicide bombings? And prior posters are right, where is the outrage over these incidents from clerics in the Islamic world, if Islam is truly a "religion of peace"? How come this story also hasn't been given much more prominent attention by an MSM that couldn't get enough of Abu Ghraib, even though the worst of what happened there was a picnic in the park compared to what these terrorists that used these two mentally disabled women did? Any people now who still think that there is a moral equivalence between America and the Islamic fanatic forces we're fighting are people who have no sense of morality whatsoever, except maybe a very perverted one.

Relevant
Thanks for the history lesson. As for the Muslim criminals/terrorists, all I can respond is: What in God's name is wrong with these people?

Muslism abuse women and children?
So, those evil muslims are that bad, they even abuse women and children? Boy that is really bad?
However, what does Oliver North call the American mass grave of its 50+ million of American unborn babies murdered in the womb of millions of American mothers for really, no other reason than materislistic reasons, since Roe V Wade and while at the same time American butcher shops continue murdering daily thousand more and dump them into the existing American mass grave? Oliver North, George W., Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, Rice and all you militaristics imperialists if you think that God will let you off the hook, because, you are eager to change the muslim world into the "goodness" of America at gun point, you had better wake up and smell the coffee? You are actually mocking God. Yes, I bring God into the picture, simply because George W. especially, with great pride constantly demands God to bless America! In essence these Imperialists, make up the agenda for God?

Special place!
As the sister of a woman w/ Down's Syndrome, the true God will deal with these cowards!

I still wonder where's the MSM's outrage?

Where are the humanitarians? Does the UN even care about these victims?

Dear Mister Schmidt
Thanks for your communique from the Westboro Church. May I remind you that it was not us "military imperialists" who shoved abortion down the throat of the American people? Protecting our children against the threats to their existance (and even those of our one-time enemies) is exactly what we're all about. The great majority of us are as appalled as any decent men would be at the mass infanticide that has ravaged this nation. It is mainly those who decry us as "militarists" who purvey and keep in force the degenerate and murderous policies that threaten our children's lives and the souls of those who are fortunate enough to be allowed to live. Don't blame us. Look to your own ranks for that.
