Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- Here in "Cheesehead" country, where Green Bay Packers fans go to Lambeau Field with snow shovels, military recruiting never has been much of a problem -- until now.

"These are outdoors, patriotic people," a military recruiter told me as I prepared to speak at a Boy Scouts function here. "Young people up here are tough. They hunt, they ice fish, they go to football games in an open stadium in the middle of a blizzard. This used to be a great place to be a recruiter, but not anymore," he continued.

"What's happened?" I asked this two-tour veteran of the "global war on terror."

His reply was blunt -- and an indictment of the so-called mainstream media: "The press is killing us. We have parents and high school guidance counselors telling our best prospective recruits that they have too much potential to waste it in the military. Last year, we had to debunk myths about how the war in Iraq was being lost. Now when we go to talk to parents, they ask us about stories they have heard about suicides, drugs -- and now murders. There is no 'good news.' It's very discouraging."

Remember those words: "very discouraging."

The "murders" my recruiter referred to are those "documented" by The New York Times in a front-page story entitled "Across America, Deadly Echoes of Foreign Battles." The "Deadly Echoes" piece appeared concurrently with the hunt for a male Marine suspected of killing a fellow female Marine in North Carolina -- a story that has been repeated almost hourly on the cable news channels.

The authors of the Times piece claim that they found 121 cases where veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan committed a killing, or were charged with one, after their return from war. What this amounts to, says the Times, is "a cross-country trail of death and heartbreak."

The Times reprints one local newspaper headline reading, "Iraq veteran arrested in killing." The story goes on to fan the flames: "Town by town across the country, headlines have been telling similar stories. Lakewood, Wash.: 'Family Blames Iraq After Son Kills Wife.' Pierre, S.D.: 'Soldier Charged With Murder Testifies About Postwar Stress.' Colorado Springs: 'Iraq War Vets Suspected in Two Slayings, Crime Ring.'"

This collection of sensational headlines is an effective gimmick, but it ignores reality. The homicide rate for 18- to 34-year-old civilians who have never served in the military is actually five times higher than it is for those who are now, or who recently have been in, the armed forces.

Had the Times wanted to make a different point, instead of impugning the U.S. military, they could have done a Google search to find these headlines: "Deputies: Couple commits suicide after foreclosure notice," from KATU-TV; and "Foreclosure May Have Led to Homicide-Suicide," from WRTV; and "Lengthy SWAT Standoff Over Foreclosure Ends in Suicide," from the Houston Chronicle. The New York Times could compile such headlines to dissuade Americans from homeownership.

"Very discouraging" is how the recruiter described the current attack on those who serve in the U.S. armed forces. He's right; and the recent Times hit piece is just part of a pattern that began to emerge in the so-called mainstream media as the situation on the ground in Iraq began to improve late last year.

By autumn 2007, casualties, attacks on civilians, roadside bombings, assassinations and sectarian violence in Iraq had plummeted. But for the potentates of the press, the lack of bad news from the battlefield didn't mean that bad news about our military couldn't be created elsewhere.

From October through December last year, there was a series of print and broadcast "investigative reports" about high rates of suicide, desertion, drug abuse and divorce among members of our military. A Nov. 17 Associated Press story blared: "Soldiers strained by six years at war are deserting their posts at the highest rate since 1980."

In fact, the drug abuse and suicide rates for military personnel are considerably lower than that for the same age group in the U.S. population, and the divorce rate in the military remains slightly lower than in the overall population. The desertion rate for the Marines actually has declined since Sept. 11, 2001.

Despite significant improvements on the battlefield in Iraq, the combined effects of this adverse "reporting" have created a more challenging recruiting environment -- and made it more difficult for young war veterans to find good jobs once they have completed their service. In December, the unemployment rate for 20- to 24-year-old veterans was nearly 17 percent -- more than three times the rate for non-veteran Americans. It's clear evidence that the smear has worked.

I hope I live long enough
to see the MSM die a painful, agonizing death for what they have done to the military.

Where are the critical reviews of the lack of integrity of today's editors? What ever happened to the Ombudsmen with the courage to speak out?

I take whatever solace I can in the declining circulation numbers for the newspapers and the abysmal ratings of the old-line networks. However, I don't see much hope in the internet because any toad like Robert can spew their venom everywhere and too many educationally-challenged people out there will buy into it.

What a crying shame...

liberal Media
The same liberal media will ignore the murder rate among Central American illegals in this country. Both Mexican and Salvadoran gangs have killed more people and commited more crimes than any one group in the US and yet you hear little or nothing from the media.Face it the American Media is a tool of the left.

Ailing GIs deployed to war zones
Do we need a draft with Bush’s nation building strategy?

DP-Fort Carson sent soldiers who were not medically fit to war zones last month to meet “deployable strength” goals, according to e-mails obtained by The Denver Post.

One e-mail, written Jan. 3 by the surgeon for Fort Carson’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team, says: “We have been having issues reaching deployable strength, and thus have been taking along some borderline soldiers who we would otherwise have left behind for continued treatment.”

BUSH'S WAR
I just want to know if you think they will do more drugs for weapons trade? Do you still have the connections in Iran? You are not a hero in my eyes. To still have as much visibility as you do is truly setting a terrible example for those very children who the military is trying to recruit. Every time I hear a report about cocaine I think of you.

libs
You gotta luv liberal logic. If you're a dem and you subvert the constitution to defeat communism, you get a fawning movie. If you're a conservtive you get villified

Oliver North
IS a hero. Only dummies and doped up on media lunatics think otherwise.

Eschew Obfuscation
We have lost the war on poverty. It is time we redeploy our resources. Ever since the war on poverty began in 1964 we have not made any headway. There are still poor people.

What does this have to do with this article?? Actually, absolutely nothing. But why should should I allow clear thinking to interfere with my bias and prejudice? Why should I allow fact to interfere with my headline. I am not interested in truth, I am interested in selling newspapers.

"New developments in the ... Breaking News... Film at eleven. Bad news sells better than good news. To understand good news requires thinking. To react emotionally to bad news requires no thinking.

I don't know anymore what Main Street Media is saying. I don't watch or read it. I explore other information sources. I learn of the future by studying the past. I started a little project a few years ago. When I heard of an event that had taken place I wrote down the things that I predicted would be said on the news or written in the papers. I tested various networks and print media. When my predictions came true and the tone and language matched my predictions, I realized that I was hearing opinion, not news.

It ain't news if you know what will be said before it is said.

Freedom isn't free. It never has been. It never will be.

Thank a vet.

Tibby

onna....
Fortunately, what you think is irrelevant. Oliver is a dedicated patriot who has contributed more to the defeat of communism and terrorism than all of the MSM put together.

Now let's see. The media are the self appointed guardians of freedom of the press/speech, etc. But who watches and polices their profession? Suprise!! They do it themselves! The NYT just loves to find slime like you who will leak classified information which they gleefully publish to the detriment of national security and the lives of our service men and women. You, a gutless piece of puke, sit in your PJs at your computer and criticize a true warrior and patriot. If you hate America and loyal Americans so much, I suggest a few days in the northern Pakistani mountains where the Taliban and Al Qeada reign. Mouth off there and you don't survive long enough for your next latte.

Oliver, just keep doing what you do and let the impotent "usefull idiots" gnash their teeth and keep up with their pitiful wailing tripe.

God Bless America and our service men and women where ever they may be.

Army Green Beret (ret)

Semper Fi Col North
Thanks for being the voice for our honorable and valiant military men and women.

Anti-military types...
are among the most despicable human beings on this planet. These ignorant wastes of human flesh will never recognize that a strong military is essential to the survival of this nation. They'd rather see this country overrun by fanatics because they ARE fanatics themselves.

If you'll remember
They did the same thing to us when we came home from Viet Nam. I bet there are still alot of people that think we're crazy, mal-adjusted etc. etc.
The truth is that Viet Nam vets are better adjusted than any other group in our society. MSM will talk about that but if they can find one who went off the deep end----headlines!

I an nothing but grateful
That back in the Sixties I was drafted into the U.S. Army.

Even today I am living the benefit of the discipline and training that I received. The education, experience and world view that I acquired as a result are NOT something one can buy and sell in the information peddling brainwashing mills of our day (excuse me colleges). I believe EVERYONE, male, female, black, white, green and yellow polka dotted should be required by law to serve at least two years in the military, peace corp or some other entity as a mandatory part of growing up and participation in this society. It should also be mandated as a pre-requisite to entrance into any major university or college.

Tibby - re the war on poverty.
"We have lost the war on poverty. It is time we redeploy our resources. Ever since the war on poverty began in 1964 we have not made any headway. There are still poor people."

And there will ALWAYS be poor people. Now a days, poverty is defined as not having all one wants. And, since this so-called war was introduced the criteria for defining POOR has continually shifted. When the term is used people tend to envision those who barely have a roof over their head or the homeless. Yet those that are magically lumped into the statistics spewed by the left somehow now A. Own their own homes, have color TV's, own their own cars, wear designer jeans, and on and on ad infinitim. The problem is that those who want to make their living administering these so-called programs for the poor usually at quite nice salaries...want to take our money and redistribute it under the guise of "helping" Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. The problem with the welfare mentality which now spans several geneartions is they have become so used to the hand out they are afraid to let go or as one can see a thread of truth in the following: "Necessity is the mother of invention".....take away the need to strive and succeed and most will ultimately come to the point where they won't. There will always be those who live in perpetual envy of others and do so because they don't have the drive, or courage to take the chances or make the decisions those as those who do. Finally, just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so to is everyother issue relative to some other issue. Ergo one must first be willing to define the issue and ITERATE the standards by which the so classify said issue. Obfuscation comes from all the double talk and pandering to human character defects (translation? the sin nature of all humanity)

No Ollie! You're Wrong!
Before every treasonous action dont these libs assure us that they support the troops? You see, people like you want these kids to join up and get shot at! That's not supporting the troops. Supporting the troops is smearing their commanders, denouncing the mission, accusing them of atrocities while refusing to report the actual atrocities committed by the enemy, printing national security secrets for the enemy to read and enjoy, and treating ideals like patriotism, tradition or honor with the contempt they deserve. Lets face it Ollie, you're old fashioned. Diplomacy through international organizations will solve all our problems. Getting our children shot at to protect some abstract 'national interests' is not a very positive attitude.

You said:

Diplomacy through the U.N. and international organizations was in effect when the World Trade ctr was bombed...twice, we had 2 African embassy's bombed, and the U.S.S. Cole was bombed.
Any more diplomacy and we'll lose a major city to a nuke!

Hello justme
Your comments are dead on target. My "diatribe" was to poke fun at those who do not see the failure of the Great Society. Rarely are there easy solutions to problems. On the other hand we often know what to do. We just don't want to do it.

Using statistics of killings by soldiers when returning home to vent against Iraq or Afganistan is bogus. Should we compare these "numbers" to WWII or Korean vets. This number is small in comparison to those who are and have served with honor.

These headlines sell papers. I would relegate the New York Times to the same place as the tabloid at the checkout counter at a grocery store. At least those who criticize those in uniform will not have to worry about being blown up when they vote. Would they stand in a cold rain just to vote ? There is a long road ahead for the people of Iraq and Afganistan. They have to do it for themselves, just as the poor in this country must do the same.

To deride the people of those countries as though they were too ignorant or tribal to participate in a democratic form of government is not much different than saying blacks freed from slavery aren't smart enough to vote either. Bigotry exists in many forms.

A fish feeds the hunger in your stomach, but there are other forms of hunger. Ther is a hunger for a people to live their life in freedom and liberty.

Who will "feed" them ?

Tibby

Forder-- A Little Irony
Yes. I am aware of all that, but I guess you dont spend too much of your valuable time watching the Democratic debates, because every thing I said in jest they have said seriously. Those are the stakes. No matter how any of us feel about who gets the Republican nomination this time (and there are a couple I'm not too fond of)we have to commit ourselves to backing the candidate, the stakes are too high this time.

OHNONOTAGAIN
What an idiot you are.

Remember
the same useful idiots working for General Giap are the same ones working in media, running the Times and in control of both houses of Congress and the Medusa is fighting tooth and nail to control the White House.
I won't forget what these traitors did to our
troops in the 60's EVER!!!!
And for the lefties, the reason Ollie got into trouble for Iran Contra was because a rotten, slimy, Marxist elected Congress(loosely called)man from my homestate, slipped a bill in that prevented US from helping Nicaraguan patriots
fight the Marxist Ortega Brothers. In other words, forget the name, but this Marxist stooge
was working for foreign despots within our government.
And all's not lost Ollie, we do have some solid
patriotic kids coming up..homeschoolers and private school kids populations are growing.
And my grandson is about to graduate Great Lakes in two weeks, then on to A school for Navy medics.
I agree, every kid should do something for their country, why even libs can't argue with that,
since their boy, JFKennedy said in his inaugural
"ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." I proudly sent two of my sons to the Navy when we had
the Gipper for CinC.

Iraq’s government is at a stalemate?

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s government is at a stalemate. As in the United States, there is much discussion here of the need for political reconciliation. What does that mean? That the majority Shiites and the minority Sunnis and Kurds must find a way to govern collectively at the national level. As national security adviser to the head of Iraq’s governments since March 2004, I have participated in the development of democracy in my country. I strongly support the government and applaud its achievements. But I understand that the political objectives of Iraq’s three main communities are unrealizable within the framework of a unitary, centralized state.

It has been impossible to maintain a political consensus on many important issues.

Up up up
Sorry, although most of the statistics cited are wrong, the bigger issue is that for military personnel divorce rates are sharply up, suicide rates are way up, homicide rates have doubled up, homelessness, mental health...

None of this comes as a surprise considering the situation they have been placed in, but some on, Ollie, be honest about what was really being reported.

It is a shame that an illegal occupation has caused so many problems, and convicted felons only care that it is harder to get young people to sign up in Bush's army. Maybe you should wait for a sane president to get your numbers up. They couldn't get any young repubs to sign up in since our occupation.

The only problems
our "occupation" has caused seem to only bother liberals, which is funny, since very few of them are actually in the military. Just shaddup and get back on the sidelines where you belong!

This Occupation
Good luck with the upcoming elections. Rove can't even begin to know how wrong he was about Americans and what they think about our occupation.

Why are the Republicans going to lose so badly? Because America is too smart to not be bothered by the occupation, no matter how much lipstick you put on it. This is the biggest mistake in the past century, and only a small percentage can continue to pretend otherwise.

Ignore the statistics all you want, but I think the percent of Liberals in the military just shot above 50% thanks to BushCo.

Just continue crap your pants over here so you don't have to crap them over there. (Wow, feels good to lower myself to CTs lack of standards.)
