Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- In early January, this oceanfront resort community is usually a pretty quiet place. This year, however, nothing is usual. This week, hotel rooms are packed, and the lobbies are crowded with presidential candidates, their campaign aides, political activists and more than 700 members of the international press corps. They are all here to participate in a series of debates and the upcoming first-in-the-South primary election. I also have discovered that among the media are a number of aliens from a parallel universe where nothing seems as it is.

This morning, as I stepped off the elevator, I was ambushed by several of my Fourth Estate colleagues. They wanted my opinion -- not about the presidential campaigns, not about the surprise planned deployment of 3,000 more U.S. Marines to Afghanistan but about last week's incident in the Strait of Hormuz.

Referring to the Jan. 6 episode in which five Iranian patrol boats made high-speed runs toward and around three U.S. warships transiting the vital, 21-mile-wide waterway, one of the reporters asked, "Doesn't this seem suspiciously like the Tonkin Gulf Incident in 1965?"

Taken aback, I responded, "Not from what I have seen on the U.S. Navy videotape shot from the bridge of the destroyer USS Hopper. It clearly shows high-speed vessels racing around the cruiser USS Port Royal and the frigate USS Ingraham. The accompanying soundtrack confirms what President Bush said -- that this was a provocative act and that the Iranians were threatening our warships in international waters."

My answer was clearly insufficient for my inquisitor. "Well, what about the Iranian navy videotape that shows nothing even remotely threatening?" one asked.

In an effort to end the "interview," I answered, "Those who believe the Iranian version of any incident are people who hate America or those who believe that every event is part of some grand conspiracy theory. Which one are you?"

Hoping that my response was offensive enough to end the line of questioning, I headed out the door. But before I could make my escape, one of the other correspondents caught up with me. To my surprise, he posed a legitimate query: "Why would the Iranians confront three U.S. warships?"

"I don't know," I replied, "but I'll call some friends, and if I learn anything I can write or talk about, I'll put it in my column this week."

Here's a recap of some of what I learned from current and former military and intelligence officers this week:

-- The maritime arm of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps -- the same gang of thugs who took 15 British marines and sailors hostage in March 2007 -- has been doing this kind of "inspection" of merchant ships and combatants passing through the Strait of Hormuz for years, though they have become "much more aggressive" in the past 10 months. "On more than one occasion, U.S. warships have fired warning shots across the bows" of IRGC speedboats.

-- Throughout this most recent encounter, all three U.S. warships were consistently at least three miles within international waters. One of the IRGC craft displayed an Iranian flag, and as they closed at high speed toward the American vessels, one of the Iranian boats broadcast over the radio in English: "We are coming for you. You will explode in a few minutes."

-- The entire event took place over a half-hour time span, and the U.S. ships were at general quarters and "fully prepared to engage" throughout. At several points in the encounter, the IRGC boats took aggressive action and "maneuvered within 500 yards of our ships," and two of them dumped "floating objects" in front of the American vessels, forcing them to change course.

-- An unnamed U.S. intelligence agency was aware that the IRGC intended to confront this transit of American warships through the Strait of Hormuz and can verify that, "Tehran's claim that this was 'a case of mistaken identity' is simply bogus."

One of my sources suggested that Iran's motive for this confrontation on the eve of a major presidential trip to the Mideast was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's effort to remind everyone that he can cut off 25 percent of the world's oil whenever he wants.

If that is what the theocrats running Tehran believe, then it's time for the U.S. Navy to remind them what happened in the Gulf of Sidra in August 1981 -- when Moammar Gadhafi sent up Libyan fighters to challenge the 6th Fleet in international waters. Go ahead, Mahmoud, look it up on Google. It may be instructive.

This is what the USN does afloat
Ollie you must know this.

how did you not get that that is exactly what he was saying?

Arab Antics
If you watch Lawrence of Arabia you will see Arabs on horseback riding in circles, shooting off their guns and howling. This is another macho posturing exercise, to see how close to the line they can get before Daddy whips off his belt and uncorks that can of whupa** in their direction.

It is what they do. Now we should do what we do.

You have to be an ostrich
If you really believe that this was not a provocative act by the radical arm of Iranian Islamism, you must have long, skinny legs and feathers. There is no discrepancy between the U.S. Navy films and those released by the Iranians. They are tickling the giant to see if they can elicit a response that they can use for propaganda purposes with Israel and America hating Mideast governments.

Even if you are foolish enough to accept believe the Iranian accounts, what possible justification would the Iranian navy (comprised of Bayliners) have to challenge Coalition ships in the Straits, clearly operating in international waters? Unless you are an Iranian radical, a liberal Democrat or a member of the main stream media, it is clear that Iran had absolutely no reason for initiating the encounter.

Big Mistake!!
Failing to recognize the highly useful intelligence the Iranians got from this well planned faux attack would be a huge mistake.
For example they now know exactly how we’ll react in terms of maneuver and timing should they want to lay mines in our path or lay fake mines so we swerve into the real ones or send a bunch of suicide boats at us. That’s why they filmed it. We should have taken them out and I would certainly hope the next time we will. That may be the only way to avoid a catastrophe.

Didn't a little speedboat
carry out a successful bombing attack on an American ship of the line about a decade ago?

Apparently This....
"We are coming for you. You will explode in a few minutes." was never said and was merely added onto the video tape.

REALITY CHECK
Mr. North those were not Iranian vessels!!!

I for one.....
Personally I would have liked to have seen the full effects of one these U.S. warships unleashed on these speed boats.

Hey, killer!
Just to be clear, you are saying that those were not Iranian vessels?

Satire can be tricky in the hands of amateurs...or were you being serious?

If you are serious, then pray tell, what were they?

Robert and Boutte
It is quite obvious to me that you come to TH ONLY to confront and disagree, so why do you bother? You are both getting to be "old news" and tiresome. I find it interesting that you NEVER agree with anything said on TH, so I will assume you are just little sheep.

How To Fix Our Problems With Iran:
BOOM!

joe-america
I am very serious! Why would a country without a Navy threaten "US"?Iran could very easily fire a missle into the water,if they feel threatened. But guess what? Iran knows that they are safe. What have they done to garner our attention?Nothing!Remember the "SURGE" is working,so to say that they are sending in insurgents, might look suspicious.Whatever you do joe, remember that China is calling the shots. We can't block oil coming from Iran.We can't attack Iran without China becoming involved.Saudia Arabia will not allow "US" to attack Iran. Therefore we should act like adults and talk things out.I hope our child-like behavior can be submerged.Don't YOU?

Regional P.R. Done...
Now that our Navy has gotten props with the middle East for not being too trigger happy, our military boys should feel free to blow 'em out of the water the next time Iran tries such a stupid antic.

Ahmadinejad posturing?
Does he have sufficient support of Iran's youth? I don't think so.

Why not provoke a response from Uncle Sam? Then, claim the "evil" USA attacked Iran - to build-up some "patriotic fervor" in the Iranian youth.

If we again find ourselves prodded and provoked, we should make sure ALL the visual details are provided to the world. Particularly to the Iranian youth.

Might not hurt to have continuing live video, available for broadcast by any media.

suicide mission?
My theory is they were hoping to be blown out of the water. That would have been used by Russia, who said "a strike against Iran is a strike against Russia."

What was the goal? Not a return military action but an economic one.

They know America is strong militarily but weak economically. Iran and Venezuela want to unite OPEC in ending the sale of oil in dollars and collapse our economy. As long as oil is sold in dollars, the demand for dollars is high enough to keep it fairly safe.

Russia would like an excuse also, to start selling the oil it sells to Europe in something besides dollars so they don't have so many dollars to get rid of. They are a large holder of our debt because of the need to get rid of the dollars they get for oil and gas sales.

That is why sovereign wealth funds are being created to buy other assets. Governments want to slowly stop lending us money.

An "incident" where the U.S. was committing a "first strike" may have been hoped to be enough to cause the end of sales in oil by at least Russia and some OPEC nations.

This "first strike" concept isn't new. It is used by many nations when they want to unite allies against somebody they view as an enemy.

Iranians playing to
the conspiracy theorists...another Gulf of Tonkin. Surely this will give Pres. Bush the reason and means to attack Iran. Remember LBJ? OBTW conspiracy theorists, that "Tonkin Incident" happened under a democrat administration.

I leave it to the Navy to act with power and resolve if the speedboats bother them again. Blow them out of the water. Those little white boxes may next contain explosives akin to those that sunk the Cole. It only took one incident to shoot down Kadafi's aircraft. We didn't wait around. But Kadafi's jets were a bit more aggressive than the little pee boats the Iranians used to chase after the USNavy.

Suicide missions
Iran still seeks revenge for our sinking of the N. Korean freighter packed with nuclear materials off the coast of Iran several months ago. This could easily be done with these “swift boats” on suicide missions. We can ill afford not to be very vigilant against such a mission.
The myth that Iranian students “hate” their President is just that---a myth----planted to placate the naïve left here and elsewhere. They clearly love their President much more than our students love ours. There may be the occasional disagreements but the madrassa’s taught them well. Meanwhile the work on nuclear weapons continues.
The NIE report has been completely debunked by Israeli intelligence and thankfully they will be willing to take care of the problem in the not to distant future.
With 2/3 of the axis of evil neutralized, Iran is still on the menu.

A look at other reviews of the incident
Take a look at this article from the Christian Science Monitor, a highly respected newspaper.
http://www.csmonitor.com/2008/0111/p99s01-duts.html

killer
you didn't answer joe-america's question.

Because they clearly were Iranian; Iran admits it. The question is, for what purpose would they buzz us?

I'm enjoying the opinions about that. I think they probing us, to determine how we would react to a real attack, and that they are seriously concered about some sort of atack from the US.

If we had blown up one of their dinghys, the world opinion would be focused on trying to pressure the US to promise we weren't planning some larger operation.

The Iranians were playing "Chicken"
Anyone who has studied the tactics of the Iranian mullahs can easily determine their reason for this little game of chicken.

Remember, The game of chess was invented in thePersian Empire. Their reasons were twofold.

1) They wanted intel on how the navy would react to a provocation. (I bet there will be a different outcome next time)

2) They were willing to "martyr" a few of thier revolutionary guard guys in order to provoke the naval commanders to fire the first shot.

That little video from Iran is just a little too convenient for my taste. If you look closely at the different videos, you'll notice that the light is different, they simply pasted in the audio from the Actual confrontation, and added their guys "Talking to the navy ships".

This was all set for when the warships sunk their "innocent fishing boats", they could scream to the rest of the world how the US was the aggressor.

It had to be really hard for the guys defending those ships Not to fire on those boats. I know I would have had an itchy trigger finger.

This time Iran lost one propaganda opportunity, so being the opportunists the mullahs are, they turned it into another propaganda opportunity.

The NIE report that that mullahs (And the leftists here) so love to trot out, actually supports GWB more than it damns him.

Th report says the "suspended" their nuke program (Which they claimed they never had) in 2003. Think back, what was happening in 2003?

They suspended the program because our troops were currently kicking butt in Iraq, and they didn't want to be next!

Now exactly how did our invasion of Iraq cause the Iranians to seek the bomb????

Seems to me that they were working on getting a bomb BEFORE we invaded Iraq.

One more leftist lie exposed for what it is.

vespanat, Please justiy this statement.
vespanat writes: ""Apparently This....
"We are coming for you. You will explode in a few minutes." was never said and was merely added onto the video tape""

Exactly where are you getting this solid evidence that has you convinced that it was "Merely added in"???

I've seen the videos from both side multiple times, and the vidoe that looks Faked to me, is the "Official Iranian" version.

If the audio was added in, please explain the fact that the seaman we hear on the tape is responding to a transmission that didn't exist?

The american seaman is clearly heard in a puzzled voice replying "We will blow up in a few minutes?" If no one said this to him, and it was added in later, please explain his reply to nothing.

Oh wait, you're a lefty, silly things like facts don't mean anything. then Ends justify the means, Right vespanat?

Sounds to me like a militant leftist intent on blaming america first, as usual for your side.

I agree Rob
If the Iranians try another stunt like that, you can bet that there will be a far different turnout.

The only things they understand is Stength.

Compassion, to them is weakness.
Every time we show compassion, and restraint, the arab TV channels are flooded with stories about how we are Weak.

Boutte is one of them
I read that one of our enemies missions is to infiltrate our websites to try to sway public opinion with propaganda and I truly feel that thats what Butt is trying to do hear. Its pretty obvious you are one of them Butt.

Isn't it amazing
how many trained military people we have responding here. Or at the very least, these are experienced state department personnel.

Killer, there you go again!
You say Iran has no Navy? How about 6 submarines plus a bunch of smaller stuff, including a couple of destroyers?

Check it out:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/iran/ships.htm

Killer: in anticipation
of your response that Iran's small Navy is of no concern to the US Navy, I offer that small craft are in fact a threat to larger naval vessels.

I am confident that the US Navy has recognized this threat and has strategies to deal with it.

If the Iranians think they gained valuable intelligence about Navy operations to deal with this threat, they should be very careful not to become too confident. On the other hand, let them overload their as**s...

Good Point Loco!
Maybe we should have a roll-call.
Put me down for MACV J2 CICV.

Jackpine Savage..
..I wouldn't describe myself as a lefty, I just have a healthy scepticism regarding what I believe in these days of WMD, Jessica Lynch etc. Oh, by the way it was that hotbed of ommie sedition the US Navy that cast doubt on the tape

Operation Praying Mantis
On April 14, 1988, the Perry-class frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts was hit by an Iranian mine. On April 18, 3 ships went into battle, with two going after a couple of oil platforms and a third seeking out the Salaban, an Iranian frigate. I stop here -- you can Google it. It suffices to say the Iranians got a well deserved spanking.

There is a parallel here...

I agreed with your sentiment nick

As much as I agreed with your sentiment nick, those bass boats were too close to use the ships their big weapons. It would have been a small arms fight.

I served aboard a Frigate in the gulf in the 80s. Most Navy ships can use a device called a TDT, which is essentially a tripod with binoculars on it, to visually aim their guns at close-in targets. But our practices against barrels with live 76mm ammo were less than spectacular. The rounds just went through the barrels and didn't explode.

At the time the Navy was talking about connecting the TDT to the CIWS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx_CIWS
It fires 20mm rounds at 3000 to 4500 rounds per minute. Now THAT would make sort work of a bass boat. I have don't know if they actually did this upgrade

Apollo Speaks and Boutte on Iran
Boutte says that Iran is a 'non-beligerent' country and Apollo responds by correctly pointing out all the terrorisim that Iran openly finances.

But you have to understand where Boutte is comming from. She blames Isreal and Jews for the worlds problems. Scum like her do not consider groups like Hamas bad because they kill Jews.

She actually thinks it is a good thing to preach that the Holocaust never happened, like Ahmedenijan, and would be thrilled if Iran killed all the Jews in Isreal and wiped it off the map. That is why she defends Iran.

One of the Problems with the US Navy
Their incompetent PC Admiral Fallon.

Listen to the US Navy and Bush whine about the agressive Iranian boats.. "They better not do that again", "we might take some action Next time" which may mean After something considerably worse than the USS Cole could be perpetrated on our Carriers, etc.

Since the speed boat debacle, the same lame leftist Commander of USCENTCOM has just set up a Muslim lecture series on all things Islam, the distorted CAIR version, no less, to be forced on military personnel & DoD civilins.

No wonder, someone I know well who worked closely with Adm Fallon, in his previous assignmnet, confirmed to me that he and Others saw Fallon as a comtemptible "Jerk."
And to think that the US Navy was created for the purpose of defeating the marauding Muslim Pirates on the high Seas, once upon a time.

Gretske 7:15 a.m. post
My compliments sir, a very accurate and well told post. The Iranian Navy, was merely trying to incite some hostile response from the USN. Our forces kept our cool and did not fall for their childish and assine ruse. However, you can bet your bottom buck that these boats were in a lot of gunsights, and at the first launch, the would have disappeared under fire from several Vulcan 20mm fire. Spouting a modest 6,000 rounds per minute, that Iranian force would have vanished in a very short time.

I personally feel that those aboard those boats had visions of virgins dancing in their heads. Sorry guys, you will have to strap on bombs to keep your lusty trysts. The silly game, possibly engineered by Mr. Amahandinejhad did not come off as planned. Note the Iranians were there, taking pictures of this incident for their propaganda purposes. I am anxious to read the posts to this article.

the real men stood up..
As mentioned in my previous post.. US CENTCOM had an upcoming PC Muslim diversity training series ready to roll...which is now cancelled!

An official email from Joe Kaufman read in part.."{I}t would be wrong for CENTCOM to host Ahmed Bedier to speak to your personnel this coming Tuesday, given CAIR's extensive ties to terrorist organizations...Please reconsider allowing Mr Bedier to speak to your personnel on Tuesday the 15th or anytime in the future. CENTCOM should be fighting terrorists, not embracing their friends."
Well said and commendable, in deed! And there's more on http://www.michaelsavage.com

Still, it is folly for the US Navy to continue allowing those Iranian probes through the use of their potential Jihadist Martyrs in speed boats. They will probably be allowed to get too close one time too many. Islamist barbarians know that given enough ants.. a comparable giant can be taken down, inspite of their ego.
