Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- Fifty-nine years ago this week, David Ben-Gurion spoke into a radio microphone and declared, "We hereby proclaim the establishment of the Jewish state in Palestine, to be called Israel." Almost immediately thereafter, President Harry Truman signed a directive ordering that "The United States recognizes the provisional government as the de facto authority of the new State of Israel," -- making ours the first country to acknowledge the new nation.

At its founding on May 14, 1948, the tiny Jewish state, about the size of New Jersey, had a population of less than 850,000, and was surrounded by enemies intent on its obliteration. Today, 6.4 million people call Israel home, and it remains the only functioning democratic government in the neighborhood. As it was in the beginning, and is now, powerful opponents in the region remain committed to annihilating what they describe as "the Zionist entity." Unfortunately, some of those hostile neighbors may soon acquire the means of achieving their goal.

In the United States, Independence Day is a national holiday -- a day of relaxation, a time for picnics, concerts, parades and fireworks. Not so in Israel, where Independence Day is a time for heightened alert -- and an annual military exercise -- just in case a threatening neighbor decides it's a good time to attack. Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist organization that operates under the protection of the United Nations, commemorated the 59th anniversary of the founding of the first Jewish state in 2,000 years by firing eight rockets into the Israeli town of Sderot. The missiles landed on a school building, injuring 17 civilians, including women and children.

But according to friends with whom I worked for years in counter-terrorism, a handful of Katusha rockets from Gaza or the West Bank are the least of Israel's concerns at the moment. My Israeli sources say that this year's annual defense exercise focused on "the threat of Syrian military units joining Iranian-supported Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon in a major offensive against Israel."

Israeli newspapers confirm this information. The Jerusalem Post reports that this year's exercise was intended to test Israeli Defense Forces' "performance and interaction in a war game simulating an all-out regional war." On Tuesday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz, both targets of intense criticism for failures in planning and decision-making during last summer's campaign against Hezbollah, participated actively in the annual exercise. This is the first time senior political figures have been directly engaged in such a drill.

"What you're not seeing in the press are other measures that are being taken to prepare for an attack," a retired Israeli official told me. "Last summer's engagement on our northern border exposed major deficiencies in civil defense, medical evacuation procedures, logistics support and planning for dislocated non-combatants. We must urgently address these problems because time is running out."

The sense of urgency may be well founded. While Israeli civilians marked their country's birth and Israeli soldiers were figuring how to defend their country from attack, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) -- the U.N.'s toothless "nuclear watchdog" -- "discovered" that Iran was moving "much more rapidly than expected" to enrich uranium.

Last month, Mohamed ElBaradei, the IAEA director general, dismissed claims by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that Tehran had activated 3,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium. Now ElBaradei tells The New York Times that the Iranians have "solved the technological problems" and are moving ahead with enrichment. Evidently The New York Times did not see any connection between this revelation and Ahmadinejad's description of Israel as "a rotten, dried tree that will be eliminated by a single storm."

When I queried my Israeli friends about this development, one replied, "Why is anyone surprised? The IAEA didn't know that the Indians, Pakistanis or North Koreans were enriching uranium until they all built bombs. So, do you expect us to wait for an Iranian nuclear weapon on Tel Aviv before we act?"

By "you," my friend didn't mean me, he meant the United States, the first nation to recognize the existence of Israel. I didn't have the heart to tell him that the survival of the Jewish state isn't on the minds of many here. In the salons of Washington, the discussion is all about how to extricate ourselves from the war in Mesopotamia.

While sipping lattes, editorial board members conclude that things aren't going well, so we must end our involvement with the same lack of commitment as that binding a Hollywood marriage. It's been five years, after all -- longer than World War II. Our drive-thru culture and ADD-afflicted electorate just don't have the staying power to defeat a determined enemy.

The war is lost, says Harry Reid. Democrats demand withdrawal. The White House stumbles and stammers to try to explain the threat. Terrorists plotting to attack a major military base in our homeland are rooted out and the mainstream media gives it the same attention as teenagers apprehended painting graffiti under a bridge.

If Israelis want to celebrate a 60th birthday, they better not count on Washington. If it had been up to this crowd, the Jewish state would have been destroyed long ago.

SPOT ON!
It feels like 1939 all over again. We are asleep at the wheel while Islamofascism is dangerously encroaching upon us. Washington will remain in a stupor, so unless Israel rises up, we may be doomed.

DARK MESSIAH
And what are you fighting for...the DARK side?

DarkMess I ah...
... wonder what fantasy world you live in. Considering your suggestion that our lackey status was bestowed 40 years ago, how exactly did a nation of 850,000 people with hardly a pot to p**s in manage to turn the single most powerful nation in the world, a nation that three years before had liberated Europe, and had demolished Germany and Japan, how did this small nation turn the US into its lackey?

I can only imagine that your "One man, one vote" statement was directed at... China? Every Israeli citizen has, at age 18, the right to vote, even Arab-Israelis. As for Palestinians having the right to vote in Israel, of course they don't have that. I suggest you ask the Jordanians why they haven't given their people, living in Judea and Sameria the right to vote in their own country. You do know that Jordan is 70% Palestinian? Jordan is where they belong.

I wonder, did we get into a war in Iraq because of a lobby that exerts itself and its interests in concert and opposition with hundreds of other lobbies, as any lobby in the US does, or did we get into a war because a ruthless dictator had broken 22 articles of his cease fire agreement with us?

In your confussion you seem to have decided to single out one country amoung many for doing what every country does. Mexico is for Mexicans, the US for Americans, England is for the English and China is for the Chinese. Why exactly is it that Israel being for the Jews is a problem? There is nothing racist about a state representing its own people and defending its citizens.

Unless you have the right pedigree you can't get citizenship in Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Mexico or China. Why is it that you, or anyone, should have a problem with Israel giving citizenship only to Jews and to those who remained in Israel when the Arab armies attacked it in 1948? Today's Palestinians who reside in Lebanon, Gaza, Judea and Samaria left during Israel's War of Independence. Those Arabs chose the side of the armies coming to kill the Israelis (the Arab Armies broadcast that anyone who remained on the Jewish land, and didn't make of themselves refugees, would be killed as they would be considered collaborators with the Jews) and for this they lost the right to be an Israeli. Why didn't the Lebenese give these refugees citizenship? Why didn't Jordan or Egypt, now or then, give these poor refugees citizenship? Israel, even when one couldn't buy meat, fresh milk or eggs, accepted millions of Jewish refugees. There was a time when Israel was as poor as its neighbors and in this period it managed to integrate its refugees. The Arab nations did not.

Dark Mess, you throw around nonsense and betray the desperate need for an opinion when your knowledge of the situation lends itself more to quite study and sincere contemplation. First learn and if your mind happens to be of some quality then your opinions may have some constructive use. Otherwise, stick to working, making a nice living and raising a family. Anyone can do that.

Count your time
and live good. How many years do we have left?

The Nukes and Us is my new article. Come on up and comment.

ALL IS LOST
Perhaps, just perhaps, if we bury our heads deep enough into the sand we won't be able to hear it either when Israel falls... and when they come to get us... we will never know either... for they will just come and shoot us in the back of our heads.

After yeasterday I have lost all hope in our leadership... and our homeland is now gone.

my 2 cents
On the day that Israel evacuated the Gaza strip and turned it over to the Palestinians one of the first things the Palestinians did was to begin firing rockets from there at Israeli civilian targets.

Why?

That's what they do. Every day. Day in and day out. Day after day after day.

And hamas and hezbollah will attack Israel again - Probably this summer.

But right now hamas and fatah are busy killing each other, so let's enjoy that while we can.

FACTS!
ISRAELS main problem is and has always been the far LEFT appeasement governments supported by the radical LEFTIST appeasement groups like the infamous "PEACE NOW"! Recent history where the idiocy of uprooting JEWISH citizens from ISRAEL GAZA and giving ISRAEL LAND to HAMAS terrorists who now rocket deep within ISRAEL on a continuous day and night basis without any real retaliation. AND the war last summer that ISRAEL lost to a band of only 4000 HAZBOLAH LEBANESE terrorists due to the pathetic radical LEFTIST appeasement OLMERT government. OLMERT remains in power even tho he has ZERO percent of ISRAELS citizens support because of the corrupted political system where concern is more for the ISRAEL CABINET to remain intact then the welfare of the NATION! The two IDF IDF solders are still imprisoned by HAZBOLAH terrorists and not even the RED CROSS has seen them, not even once and HAZBOLAH has been rearmed by IRAN and SYRIA. ISRAEL ARABS (a oxymoron) have aligned themselves with the PA. AND the PA still has kidnapped IDF imprisoned in GAZA with never a visitation by the RED CROSS.

AND ALL THE ISRAEL GOVERNMENT IS INTERESTED IN IS APPEASEMENT BY GIVING MORE LAND TO ITS ENEMY'S SO IT CAN BE LIKED BY THE ISRAEL HATING WORLD!

THE TWO STATE SOLUTION WAS RESOLVED IN 1948 WHEN THE ARABS ("PALESTINIANS") WERE GIVING 78% OF THE PALESTINIAN MANDATE (TRANS-JORDAN, NOW CALLED JORDAN)AND THE JEWS WERE GIVING ONLY 22% (ISRAEL) BY THE UN!!!!

ISRAEL IS REALLY 3500 YEARS OLD AND WAS IN EXISTENCE WAY BEFORE ISLAM WAS CREATED BY MOHAMED IN THE YEAR 600!

FACT!
ISRAELS LAND HAS ALWAYS BEEN FROM THE "NILE TO THE EUPHRATES"!

Israel was a mistake...

...to have been formed by mandate. The UN - even with US money - should have bought the land in Palestine needed for the Jews. Truman was no Jefferson.

President Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territories and thereby avoided any conflicts with France and "diplomatically" helped to finance Napoleon's conquest of Europe. As well, this purchase allowed the young US republic a respite from European interference while the British were militarily preoccupied with the "Little Corporal". Such a deal.

The Palestinians would have demanded more than a kings ransom, to be sure. But in hindsight, it would have been a much cheaper price than what Israel, Jews around the world, and the US taxpayer have paid in blood and treasure since 1947. A lot cheaper indeed and with better results.

Iran & nukes
If Iran were to get a bomb and are able to put it in Israel where they want, we will have a warning. If all the palestinians, Hamas and Hebollah are seen fleeing then Iran will bomb them.Or Iran don't give a damn who it kills and bombs without warning. However they must know that their country will be destroyed by Israel and the U.S.That is unless someone like Obama is president.

How long
How long are we gonna continue to throw money at the Palestinians in hopes of a two state solution? This is ridiculous since they eat their own and have never proved themselves capable of governing anything. Why are we funding a nation of racists?

Bucko
Our Founding Fathers desired to see the Jews returned to the Holy Land. As to paying for it...WE HAVE! Just exactly what were all those tax dollars and blood we have dumped into the two state solution. It's time for the rest of the very rich ME to pony up and pay for it.

For Lolo
Unforutnately, PA is not the only racist nation funded by Israel. Every Arab nation which receives aid or commerce should be counted, as well as Pakistan--a nation which murdered 2.3 million Muslims (and 1.2 million non-Muslims) in 1971.

Noticeable errors
The question by North's Israeli friends, "Why is anyone surprised? The IAEA didn't know that the Indians, Pakistanis or North Koreans were enriching uranium until they all built bombs. So, do you expect us to wait for an Iranian nuclear weapon on Tel Aviv before we act?", shows some obvious errors.

(1) India used PLUTONIUM, not enriched uranium (in fact, it has never bothered with enriched uranium) for all detonations and weapons.
(2) Pakistan had been buying (and installing) centrifuges since 1979 despite of its only nuclear power plant then being of CANDU (heavy water and NATURAL uranium fuel) design--and this was even shown on CBC's "Fifth Estate" program.

So such a comment shows a rather appalling ignorance.

Lolo,...

...as I posted, it would have been cheaper in 1948 to have paid the Palestinians an outrageous price for the lands of Israel than the price we have all paid for the last 60 years. The Palestinians would have been "Wealthy Arabs" in 1948 and very welcome in other Arab states. The US might have thrown in a new 1948 Ford car for every Palestinian father that accepted money for land. They would have left of Israel faster if they'd been given a car and money to go on.

By the way, I wonder if the US problem with Mexican immigration will create a situation similar to Israeli/Palestinian issue but with Americans and Mexicans as the protagonists?

to Dark Messiah
The existance of the Israeli State is prophetically ordained, by the G-d who reveals himself in the Bible.

Ollie North worked...
for years in "counter-terrorism"? When did he start giving himself this title?

Ron
The guy is nothing but a convicted felon who got off on a technicality. He lied to Congress and violated his oath as a Marine Officer. He is a disgrace and I find it difficult to believe any organization right or left will have anything to do with him.

Hi Hal
The irony is, and you'll never see Hannity or FOX mention it when North is on, the ACLU got Ollie off on the technicality. Go figure

They did buy the land
Bucko, the Jews had been buying land from the Arabs since the middle part of the 19th century. Many Arabs in, what was then called Palestine, worked on the farms the Jews had created from swamps. The Arab population in those days was very small, having been decimated by malaria and an outbreak of plague. Jewish communities had also been hit by these diseases but due to the value placed in living in the land of our ancestors, Jews returned more readily. The Arabs that we today call Palestinians, a large percentage of them, came in response to the farms built by the Jews, as they were migrant laborers. They came from Syria, Turkey and Egypt. Some Arabs traded with the Jews and worked hand in hand with them as they saw that a country that had been a backwater place of destitution for hundreds of years was starting to bloom in the hands of the Jews.

Arab religious leaders began to teach their flock to resent the Jews. It was considered an insult to Islam that Jews should be assertive. It further angered them that these Jews were successful where Arabs had failed. The final insult was that Arabs who worked with the Jews benefited from the arrangement. So, the Arabs began to work as hard as they could to reverse these three insults. They tried to make the Jews subservient to Arabs. They tried to steal and destroy Jewish property (which had been bought from Arab absentee landlords). They began to attack Arabs who worked with Jews and called them collaborators. When Arafat’s cousin, the Mufti of Jerusalem, was set in power by the Brits his strategy of regular violent assault against Jews and “collaborators” was initiated. Their strategy is the same today. It didn't matter then, as it does not now, whether Jews bought the land with money, work or blood. Then and today, the Arabs disqualify Jews from owning Israel for the same reasons they always did. Non-believers can not own land. It is an insult to Islam. I for one pray that we continue to insult Islam in this manner for all the days of this world until Peace comes to everyone.

good article
Unfortunately as some homosexual European wrote, he "knows how to enjoy his liberties not how to fight for them". I think this is true of my sorry baby boom generation and of Israel's as well.

It is 2007 and it may as well be 1984.

Spin is all there is. Democrats call their running with tails between their legs an honorable retreat or whatever other garbage words they are using to describe it. Bush is calling his immigration bill "not an amnesty" and his lack of building the fence "security".

Our "intelligence" thinks it will take Iran as long as the Manhattan project to get to goal, overlooking the fact that N Korea is already there and helping Iran. Gee??!! How long does it take to figure out nuclear weapons when you already have the technology and expertise?
Duh. Maybe we should rename our CIA "DUH". Tenet was treated graciously by the Bush administration and wrote a nasty book anyway, so he makes money over and on top of the retirement plan of the government. The New York Times prints national security secrets, suffers no repercussions, and is still riding a losing business. Wilson publishes facts in his report that shows that Bush didn't lie and goes on to write a book saying Bush lied.

Incompetence is rife in our society and including the GOP debates where our "presidential candidates" don't have the balls to wear clothing with their name on it and the "media elite" don't see the need of giving us the names of the candidates when they are speaking. After all they know who they are. Maybe we should just rename the USA DUH. Best thing I saw on a comedy show this week was a woman who thought John Edwards was Al Gore, and that's when the dems are running a white man, a white woman, and a Black man in their primaries. The GOP runs 10 white middle aged receding hair line men and they think they are making an impression on people? Duh.

Liberal Double Standard
Bill Clinton BLATANTLY lied to Congress, but I don't hear any LIBERALS calling him a disgrace. Ollie North worked extensively in Counter-Terrorism, it is a matter of Public Record. Typical Liberal Double Standards!

Bucko
And like I have said we and they have paid for that land many times over...to a people that didn't ever really own or have any historical claim to it and have since proven that they are incapapble of governing anything but death. Israeli's are the ones that made that land livable, not Palestinians. It also bears reminding that there are Palestinians, Arabs, Christians, and Jews living in Israel together with mutual respect. As to your most excellent question...I don't know. It seems we capitulate much more than the Israeli's since we don't have bombs of various sorts going off. However the more we do capitulate the more they demand. If you give a mouse a cookie...he will want some to go with it!

Georgetwin
Just point me to the authoritave articles that explain Ollie's derring do in the world of counter-terrorism. Please don't confuse the issue with Bill Clinton, whose stature only grows bigger with each passing day these days.

Thanks
Grateful American, Lolo, PidyonAmi

Just want to say thanks for answering DarkMessiah.
I guess he thinks he's the AntiChrist. I hope you are answering letters to the editor and other postings by other antisemites.

For Ron and Other Liberal Fools
The issue I raised was that Bill Clinton lied to Congress, yet he is held up as a Role Model. Bill Clinton is a Liar, A Cheat and A Coward. In other words, A LIBERAL! The only things that grow bigger about The Clintons are his Lies and Her A$$.

Oliver L. North is a combat decorated Marine, a #1 bestselling author, the founder of a small business, an inventor with three U.S. patents, a syndicated columnist, and the host of "War Stories" on the Fox News Channel. He claims, however, that his most important accomplishment is being "the husband of one and the father of four."

North was born in San Antonio, graduated from the U.S Naval Academy in Annapolis, and served 22 years as a U.S. Marine. His awards for service in combat include the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for Valor, and two Purple Hearts for wounds in combat.

Assigned to the National Security Council staff in the Reagan Administration, Colonel North was the U.S. government's counter-terrorism coordinator from 1983-1986. As such, he was involved in planning the rescue of 804 medical students on the island of Grenada, and played a major role in the daring capture of the hijackers of the cruise ship Achille Lauro. After helping plan the U.S. raid on Muammar Qaddafi's terrorist bases in Libya, North was targeted for assassination by Abu Nidal, the infamous terrorist found dead in Baghdad in August 2002.

North's award-winning combat coverage for Fox News while embedded with U.S. Marine and Army units during Operation Iraqi Freedom won international acclaim.

North is the author of Under Fire, One More Mission, War Stories - Operation Iraqi Freedom, War Stories: Heroism in the Pacific, War Stories III: The Heroes Who Defeated Hitler, and two novels, Mission Compromised and The Jericho Sanction. All of his books are New York Times bestsellers.

Georgetowin
HA ha ha, Ollie was an action figure eh? Ollie was a keyboard commando and paper pusher that can make saps like you think he was something he was not, that is, a man who thought he was above the law, well boy, he got his come uppence big time.

Darn ...
...PidyonAmi beat me to it.

It's long been known that the "Zionist" movement began with individual Jews buying land in what is now Israel. The inhabitants were very pleased to sell them land at 5-10 times the fair price.

After a generation, the Jewish settlers had improved the land so much the original inhabitants wanted it back, thus starting riots in the 1920s & 1930s that led the British to send a fact-finding commission (the Peel commission) to Palestine. Interestingly, the Peel commission found that the non-Jewish inhabitants thought of themselves as SYRIANS and had no desire for independence. The idea of "Palestinians" seemd to have been invented by Arafat as a means of garnering sympathy for his particular band of killers.

Z82
Actually polls have shown that Palestinians if given all of the land of Israel have no objections to losing their "independence" and becoming part of Syria or Egypt, since they have no faith in their ability to run things and including electricity water and other infra structure. So the Leftists could be fighting to cause a bloodbath and the defeat of Israel and within 2 years there would be no Palestine anyway.
