The Perfect Storm for Conservatives... If They Don't Blow It

Poll
Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Conservatives have this uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and overplay every hand dealt them. They squandered the Reagan Revolution by parsing and dicing an agenda of positions unobtainable from even the most charismatic, or messianic of candidates. The color required to attain “conservative” credentials on the litmus paper appears in no color wheel known to man. The acceptable candidates in this category are whittled to a pencil point that can only scribe the name of Ronald Reagan.

In the hopes that more people would have adopted his manner of principled politics, abandoning the mud fight that is covering the nation in sludge, conservatives have searched diligently for an heir apparent while consistently aborting their own. No one is pure enough, conservative enough, and principled enough to wear that mantel, yet they still hold every elected official to that standard. And, ironically, the country holds the entire Republican Party to that same standard while acknowledging that the Democrats and their party are incapable of feigning an attempt at such lofty heights.

Barney Frank is seen as the voice of all that is virtuous in sexual preference while Mark Foley is run out of town on a rail for his dalliances in alternative lifestyles. Senator Larry Craig is tarred and feathered by the giddy left while claiming the right is homophobic. Tom Delay is driven out of office by an over zealous partisan prosecutor while Congressman William Jefferson commandeers government sources to salvage his personal items, including the $90,000 in his freezer. George Allen can utter a made up word that morphs into a racial slur while the Democrat who filibustered the Civil Rights Bill gets a pass, once again. I’m not really sure what happened to Newt Gingrich, but I am sure he didn’t lie under oath or seduce an intern like Bill Clinton did. Bill has had so many sexual improprieties it would require a certified public accountant to keep track of them and somehow he is the victim and the women are the vile creatures seduced by that siren of the right wing conspiracy. His wife gets the mea culpa senate seat in a state she has never lived in, and a multi-million dollar house she didn’t spend a dime on . . . and she is the victim, not the women her husband abused.

We have watched Clarence Thomas endure a “high tech lynching,” seen Condoleezza Rice reduced to caricatures of Aunt Jamima and seen Michael Steele have Oreo cookies thrown at him for daring to leave the liberal plantation and express their own political views based on principal. Alan Keyes was all but ignored in his bid for president even though his resume, his intellect, his articulate ability and passion for a country he has always loved, shine like the sun compared to the flickering candle of the finalist in American Idol President, Barak Obama. Why have all these people been held to an impossible standard by both the left and the right? Different reasons. The left has identified all things Republican as akin to the anti-Christ . . . not that they acknowledge there is a Christ, but it is an apt analogy. And the “right”, once again, can’t seem to get its judgmental act together to recognize good people and get behind them when they are willing to put their lives on the line for the country.

So what we are seeing on the horizon is a perfect storm for a group bound by common philosophy that is at odds with all the participants in the 2008 presidential elections. If conservatives would take a moment from eating their young, look up from the bloodied carcass of fallen comrades they have abandoned in the hunt for perfection, they would see a perfect storm on the horizon.

John McCain has somehow, managed to edge out other candidates who were rejected by conservatives because they were not perfect enough . . . or they were too perfect. I can’t seem to get my arms around the fact that Mitt Romney looked too perfect, had great credentials, good administration skills but just wasn’t good enough. Giuliani was America’s Mayor, and granted, Mayor is not a resume topper, but neither is being the housewife of a man who cheats on you and finagles a senate seat in lieu of candies and flowers. Only Duncan Hunter had a perfect conservative score, yet the conservative elite sat around, wringing their hands searching for a candidate with a perfect conservative score. And even Mike Huckabee is far more conservative than John McCain, yet, he was rejected in favor of Hillary and Obama.

It has been twenty years since Reagan left office and the only ones who have accomplished anything have been summarily reprimanded and reproached for doing too much, not doing enough, not doing it the right way . . . whatever . . . they have passed and the movement is a dying ember fanning itself in the hopes of igniting a flame of revolution.

This is the perfect storm for such a revolution, if that once powerful group of leaders would give one final gasp of passion and unify their collective efforts to throw down a gauntlet of compromise and ultimate victory.

That gauntlet, to the heir apparent in the Republican Party, John McCain, is very simple and has only two parts. The vice presidential running mate should be vetted by the conservative wing of the party as acceptable, and he will magnanimously acknowledge and agree that if he is elected, he will serve only one term.

If conservatives can coalesce behind those terms, which would be a miracle, then there could possibly be hope for the future. If not, Hillary or Obama will win . . . depending on who gets the Democratic nomination.

And if McCain does not agree, those who feel they are once again being railroaded and forced to accept an unacceptable candidate, should not sit this election out, but vote their voice and select a write-in candidate who should have been chosen as a running mate. One very positive by product of losing the general election is that the leadership of the Republican party convenes to elect a new leader as opposed to having one selected by the sitting president. This is the silver lining of a perfect storm.

If Hillary is the nominee, she will be a one-termer with a hostile senate and congress because it will be a known fact that Barak was cheated out of the race. She will be a pariah in the media, in the Democratic Party, and in the nation’s eye. She will retaliate with draconian measures to bring her “subjects” in line and a revolt will occur. If Barak wins, the populace will be crying “uncle” in two years as they struggle to regroup from oppressive taxes, regulations, restrictions and government’s tightening stronghold of unrestrained power. And that huge money-making machine known as “baby boomers,” will begin to slowly grind to a screeching halt as young retirees realize they would much rather spend the rest of their lives doing what they want, not what the government dictates. That young, impressionable group of new voters will be expected to pick up that slack, receiving paychecks that barely cover expenses and their altruistic nature will turn ugly with greed as they realize they have nothing to show for giving the government 50% of their hard earned money. They will expect their young president to have the answer and his response will be to tax and spend more and more.

If either Hillary or Barak wins it will be because McCain would not negotiate with his base and humbly understand that winning the election is impossible without them. If McCain agrees to the conditions, reneges on the agreement to not run a second term he will become Bush 41, surrounded by moderates who actually thought he could win without the base, which ironically was the same reason Dole lost. So McCain can do what is best for the country or he will either Bush himself or Dole himself. And it is between him and the conservatives in the party if they have the courage to press the issue.

If they don’t, then they should not complain if they are forced to give allegiance to Hillary or Barak under penalty of whatever. And if they don’t, they forever . . . forever . . . lose a position as a serious political voice in the destiny of the country.

The perfect storm is brewing and it is up to the conservative base to recognize it and do something about it.

I grow so weary of these straw men
Just once I would like to see a McCain lover acknowledge that conservatives are not "seeking perfection" or "eating their own". Did we not vote for Huckabee, Thompson, and Romney in droves? Between these three imperfect candidates were there not more votes garnered than the liberal McCain ever dreamed of getting?

We even know that Reagan was not perfect. Is anyone? We just are looking for someone with a modicum of conservatism and yet again, liberals and moderates in early crossover primaries hand us one of their own. McCain is now officially the most liberal nominee ever foisted on the electorate. If JFK or Hubert Humphry were alive and running today they would be doing so on McCain's right.

The VP vetting and the notion of promising to only serve one term is worth thinking about but after paragraph after paragraph of condescension and straw men arguments, its hard to take this person, whoever she is, seriously.

And when I say liberal nominee
I mean from the Republican side. Clearly there have been more liberal Dems.

Storm is more like a drizzle
Ms. May, Mitt Romney WAS our compromise candidate, by which I mean, he was the only one remaining who was not committed to liberal principles. He may have been a flip-flopper, but he was our flip-flopper, and not the left's. The neocons, moderates, Dems, "independents," bussed illegal aliens, and other assorted leftist trash picked McCain for us, and the GOP stood around and did absolutely nothing about it. Now, we all have the live with the consequences. Between the ballot fraud, illegal alien voting, media manipulation, bribing of moderates with campaign pledges, and whatever other dirty tricks the left will undoubtedly pull, you are probably wasting your time trying to get actual conservatives to vote for McCain anyway.

Let's take this opportunity to renew our commitment to individualism and limited government, and hope that we can make a comeback next go-around.

McCain may not be a genius,
but he would have to be a complete moron to make himself a lame duck before he even gets started.

I was once of the opinion that McCain would have zero chance against Obama. Seeing the two side-by-side at a debate will not be a pretty picture for those of us on the right.

But lately I have been reconsidering. And I wonder that Obama's lack of accomplishment, lack of substance, the disconnect between his warmed-over, already tried and failed socialist plans and the true American bootstrap ethos, when compared to McCain's consistent message of smaller, more responsible government, may actually allow McCain to prevail - against all odds.

I suspect that republicans will rally around McCain in the end. And a fair share of independents will see through Obama's emptiness.

And even if the democrats win, one can realistically hope they will be too incompetent to do any lasting damage - i.e. socialized medicine. After all, look how inept they have been on Iraq, even with a sweeping mandate from the people.

"SAM"...McCain/GOP take massive losses
Sam, I'm afraid you are RIGHT... I WANT a "do-Over".
I CAN'T vote for "McCain"... HE is the one that should be running as "Independent"..

The GOP is Gone for the next 4 years, at least..

to kathy & sam:

I marvel at the chutzpah of certain smug individuals who really expect that,

because they won't vote GOP any longer, the party is now kaput-- Whigs, out of luck. (Meaning that only their vote is important.)

dear goatlockerandtherestofthat

Yes; I think you're right. I also see Obammy as the old idol with the clay feet.

One on one he'll seem like a midget compared to McCain, who tells us we'll WIN in Iraq, and stymie the Iranian threat--

While the Groovy Cat is promising to CUT AND RUN within 90 days of his election to the Presidency. That promise by itself will squander all the fame he's accumulated over this campaign.

Adding the sobering truth that he intends to raise taxes --McCain rightly would state the obvious; cutting taxes will BOOST our ecomomy.

McCain ought to emphasize TAX CUTS, War on Terror, Pro-Life and FAMILY; all winning issues.

Massive losses?
Has anybody looked at the head to head polls with McCain and Obama? Rassmussen today has McCain up 3%. I have not seen one poll showing Obama running away with anything. I realize a poll now does'nt carry much weight as far as what will happen in November, but it does prove Obama is nowhere near 10 feet tall and bullet proof.

SAM....you do know the RNC does have more money than the DNC. It is the Dem Senate and Congressional committees that have outraised the GOP Senate and Congressional committees.

Kathy...Anybody who cant vote for McCain aginst an Obama or a Clinton simply does'nt care about the country. You are not a conservative. No true conservative would throw their vote away or stay home on election day so Obama or Clinton can give our enemies for free what they can't win on the battlefield. No true conservative would sit back and let an Obama or Clinton pick up to 2-4 Supreme Court Justices. Real conservatives need to end their little hissy fit and get behind McCain. Any conservative that does'nt, and I truly believe this, is doing our terrorist enemies a huge favor.

Constitution Party shall set you free

Anyone who would support a Traitor who has taken your Constitutional right can only be looked at as a Traitor themselves.

If you do not have the backbone to stand up and fight for your rights that have been taken from you by way of a Treasonous act, then you deserve the misery a Traitor will bring you when voted into office.

The American people are so brainwashed into believing their only choice is Republican or Democrat it is pathetic. It is despicable voters are too lazy or incapable of researching a candidates views and their plan for the country and just vote for a party.

If this country is to survive, then this year people need to look at a candidate, and not just who is on a party’s ticket.

There is not one single person running that has a clue pertaining to policies that will keep the country’s businesses moving forward and prospering while they enjoy low interest rates enabling them to do so.

McCain has no clue or experience in business.

Obama has no clue or experience in business.

Hillary has no clue or experience in business.

Yet all of their past history and their present plans will kill this economy and our future.

You people better look for a true leader with a real plan elsewhere this year if you are to assure the survival of the Republic.

TopGun
It actually is possible i will vote Dem for president this year. The reason is that all of the candidates look to me like routes to disaster, and i want the Dems to be blamed. Of course, the almost daily twists and turns are so weird its hard to predict anything. I'd prefer Hillary, since after Ms. Obama's remark, i dislsike the thought of her in the white house. Oh well. She woould doubtless be an improvement on Hanoi Jane. And Obama is sharp. Who knows what he will do? But the appeal of pie in the sky hope and change can only be dampened by experience. Talk to any recent emmigrant from Cuba. They have the sophistication of having bought into Marxism, implemented it and experienced it. No more determined capitalists can be found. They risk death to get to where it is practiced. A few years of international embarrassment and economic messes a la Peanut Jimmy, will apparently be required to educate the under 30 crowd who believe history started in 1988.

Well written
Id make the case that whats needed is the 3rd party conservative party.

that all the woes of the GOP and all our hatred for those weaker , more liberal side of the republican party could be fixed in one swift movement.

having the GOP for those listed above " RINOs, country club, open borders , unfair trade types" They stay and run there party for what it will be win or lose it would pure and true.

Allowing and even encouraging the escape of the conservative wing of the party with there blessings. Much like ditching the unwanted black sheep of the family. Make it pleasant and polite however make it happen.

for whatever reason us conservative are spineless when it comes to leaving the GOP which doesnt serve our interests , concerns or core beliefs. Why is this the case ? I dont know why maybe some one creditable can tell me a good reason.

afraid we wont win national offices ? , afraid we wont create a true platform that would stand for what we believe in ?

I ask whats the worse that could happen ? The GOP does better with out us , thats not even possible seriously as its us that volunteer our time , money and energy. Its us that come out and bring , drive , carry those needed votes to push GOP candiates over the victory top.

someone tell me why we dont have the sack to leave the GOP and more important create a party for us ran by us. win or fail it would ours

Please help me understand

What a Genius You Are
Why would McCain agree to one term and be a lame duck from the beginning? That's one of the most asinine things I've ever heard.

Let the backroom decide on the running mate to keep him in check and be back to the good old boys network. Almost as good as having Superdelegates.

Those of us who consider ourselves conservatives can't always have our way. We made a big fuss over immigration and ended up with Pelosi and Reid. I'm sure conservatives like their immigration policies better than the Republicans'.

It's time for conservatives to bend a little and be a little compassionate socially. I have in the past two years and it hasn't hurt me a bit. It doesn't mean I'll vote for a Democrat but I will support the nominee of our party, and the rest of you sore losers should do the same.

Or we could have another Goldwater and get slaughtered. And in the end he became a liberal anyway.

What a stupid deal you advocate. I hope they keep it a secret if they do it.

Section 8 . . .
. . . has two primary meanings: a category for members of the armed forces who are drummed out for being mentally unfit, and a government program to subsidize rental payments.

So, interesting choice of name.

Anyway, a question: Do you have any actual ARGUMENTS in favor of conservatives' pulling the lever for a liberal with an "R" after his name, or are you just planning on calling us names?

I say that no true conservative would pretend a donkey is an elephant, just because he's put on a fake (and removable) trunk. Whoever wins the election, we're going to have a liberal President, who will enact ruinous policies. It's going to be a long four (or eight) years, and we need to get ready to hunker down.

The Dems are going to get everything they want, anyway; why should conservatives takes the rap for it. Let the Dems get tarred with their own failed policies, and wait for 2012 (or 2016) for a conservative renaissance.

The blue blood, country-club types have taken the party back, after over 40 years of conservative domination. Without us, they're are going to be a permanent minority, and name calling isn't going to work any better this time than in 2006.

Like Zell said of the Dems, "I didn't leave my party; my party left me."

Jeanette writes
bend , bend bend lil tree !

what part of the last 7 years hasnt been bending to jeanette ?

illegals , Nothing remotely close to upholding our laws under the GOP watch
Tax reforms , real tax reforms , ending the death tax , lower corp rate , ending tax breaks for sending jobs overseas
Education , a law half written by the enemy kennedy
Spending , no need to list how huge the government has grown
Sending endless amounts of freshly printed worthless dollars to countries that hate us
Certain policies in Iraq
Our treatment of our war heroes , having them pay for phone calls , lunches while recovering from wounds from the war.
paying them like illegals and having military families depend on churches and extended families to just pay for the core needs.

exactly where else do you wish us to bend ?

Our backs are broken from bending lady !

wake up

Peter O

The problem, Norm
is that if the dems win the presidency, and if they somehow manage to get a health care
"entitlement" program passed into law, we will likely never be rid of it. And your grandkids will be paying through the nose for the doctor bills of some lazy bum who doesn't feel like paying his own freight.

I don't agree with many of McCain's policy stands -- Amnesty and Campaign Finance especially -- but he is an effective advocate for fiscal responsiblity (might be able to eliminate earmarks), and he believes in a strong military and robust national defense policies.

One is much more likley to effect a change in priorities working within the party, as opposed to the 3rd party route.

As a libertarian leaning thinker, I disagree with much of the so-called "social conservative" agenda. And there has never been a perfect republican candidate in my view. As much as I loved Reagan, his war on drugs legacy has been an unmitigated disaster. But he was strong on defense when we needed it most, advocated smaller government, lowered tax rates, championed deregulation, and perhaps best of all - he made the liberals squeal like a bunch of little girls.

It's important that we have a big tent. Better to get a percentage of your ideas supported, than zero - which is what you'll get with phi slamma Obama, or Hillary.

Unrealistic comes in different flavors
Nina argues, with justification, that the GOP base searches in vain for a candidate to fill a role created by, and only really suited, to one man. Granted, I'll take 80% of Best over 95% of Awful, and as a party we need to recognize this and indeed do so.

The Dem's nominee is going to be either so thin and vapid or have sooo much baggage as to make an easy target. If the party and candidate can quickly frame the debate and hammer it home, we'll win the moderates and those willing to be awakened from Fantasyland in Nov.

Granted, a bona fide conservative as a running mate will help with the GOP base who feel somewhat abandoned. (Why haven't I heard Duncan Hunter mentioned for this role..?) And wasn't it mentioned, with some derision, that the evengelical branch was voting for Huckabee as they felt taken for granted by the rest of the party. Isn't that what the "true blue" conservatives are threatening now..?? (Hello, Ann...)

But I disegree with Nina's call for McCain to agree up front to be a one term president. A) It's not fair to the man to require that, and B) the presidency has turned into a single 8 year term with a vote of confidence at mid-term.

Guaranteeing that this octennial upheaval will happen again in four years and not eight is likely to upset many voters. My only concern is McCain's age. He is good health now, and there is no apparent reason for him not to be in 2016, but we lost a huge voice for reason and the conservative movement when Reagan became ill shortly after leaving office.

This is all the more reason to have a capable conservative as the VP.

I Get It
All we have to do to win is become Democrats. Why not skip these intermediate steps and go ahead and set up the Central Committee that the Liberals want. All hail the Collective! We deserve the misery we are going to get. Our children don't.

The 44th president’s $4 trillion debt

Do you trust any candidates not to raise taxes on the middle class or not fix AMT?

The candidates want to do things like reduce taxes and fix health care. But they’ll have to deal with the cold realities of the federal budget.

CNN-The presidential candidates all have big plans for their time in the White House. Reform health care. Reduce taxes. Close corporate loopholes. Encourage savings. The list goes on.

Like college graduates whose career choices may be limited by their student loan debt, however, the next president could be constrained by the federal budget.

According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the annual budget deficit will improve during the next president’s four-year term and end in a surplus of $61 billion by 2013.

MccRainman's agreement to serve only one
.... term would be akin to his telling al Qaeda, Obama bin Laden and the Taliban the troops'll be leaving Iraq and Afghanistan next Fall.

The domestic terrorists (AKA the "Democrats") would eat him alive.

That much, surely, is Black and White.

3rd party is a loser idea
The conditions which folded the Whigs and gave rise to Republicans will probably never occur again. There simply isn't an issue (slavery) big enough to collapse an existing party and create another and fractioning the vote into 3rd's or 4th's will give us a system like Israel, where the PM has to make deals with a multitude of disparate groups and form a coalition to govern, which only lasts until they disagree and the whole stupid process starts again. Not very stable.

If you don't like the direction your party is headed, get off your butt and work from within to change it. Sec8, glll and jeanette are sounding like adults, whereas Pete, Norm and my buddy, Savage are not. Conservative groups are proliferating and expanding like never before, thanks to the internet. I just signed another Grassfire petition asking our political slim in DC to knock it off with the earmarks.

The logic of letting dhimms run us into the ground for the next 4 or 8 years, escapes me. They won't get blamed for killing the economy, destroying our sovereignty or anything else. They never do. Somehow it's always someone else's fault, because they're so superior, you know. They never make, nor admit mistakes.

I can't stand my own Senator, McCain, BUT two issues put me in his camp. SCOTUS and national security. The things I disagree with him on we can fight tooth and toenail over. Allowing a goofy dhimmicrat in the WH, with an already goofy dhimmicrat Congress, is totally unacceptable.

If that happens it won't be because I sat home and did nothing.

One Term
You may have an idea worth while. Although *everyone* knows you cannot trust Senator McCain to keep his word, he has definitely proven that. Still, if he has a strong conservative running mate, I might actually consider voting for Senator McCain as President. I don't know if that is enough given his voting record, but I would consider it.

If not, then I will certainly vote for a third party candidate, or not vote for President this election. As for all of those who say I should vote for Senator McCain because he has an "R" by his name, that is just foolish. Senator McCain is a Democrat wearing a Republican label as his voting record shows. If I wanted to vote for a Democrat, I would vote for the real thing.

political "slime" not slim
you'all knew what I meant

The Real Conservative Party exists
It is the America First Party.

http://www.americafirstparty.org

Formed in 2002, and starting to build momentum.

Check out the party's platform and many of you will find the planks you've always believed in.

We simply have to start now and build a real structure for the limited-government, pro-life and individual freedom concerns we share.

Come join us.

If nothing else, McCain's word is good
Even his enemies will grant him that. Isaldur, why do you think he clings to his stupid collaborations like Mc-Feingold, Mc-Kennedy, Mc-Edwards, Mc-Leiberman?

He hammered out a deal with those people (or sold his own party out) and he's stuck with it.

You absolutely CAN trust him to remain true to his beliefs and keep his word, no matter whether it's to libs or cons.

McCain is one of the reasons I went over to independent in 2000. He not only goes over to the other team sometimes, he plays just as hard for them as he does for us. We expect that he would at least put some analgesic balm in their jock straps!

What hand
' Conservatives have this uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and overplay every hand dealt them."

Republicans have this uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and overplay every hand dealt them- there all fixed

Conservatives did not ask for Senator Mccain -we were to lethargic in the early primaries to de-rail him- we fought tooth and nail against amnesty -this includes moderates and liberals, we did not ask our elected "conservatives" to spend like democrats.

We have a candidate that is willing to stifle first ammendment rights, accept global warming as a valid reason to destroy our economy, try to ramrod amnesty down our throats while calling it earned citizenship and calling us racist and people that are un-patriotic; and he does all this in the name of either buying votes or surrendering to the other side of the aisle. I do not believe he has ever compromised by moving a liberal policy toward the right; in other words he is a liberal that has a few conservative leanings.

The only real hand we have is to show up in record numbers to vote in congressional races, any gubernatorial races, state races and to vote your conscience in the presidential election -myself I'll probably vote third party on top of the .ticket

Once an enemy collaborator
always an enemy collaborator. McCain cut deals with the Vietnamese, and he'll certainly sell you out to the Bilderbergers.

Kiss America goodbye. Ain't no savin' it now.

I've no interest in the republican party

As it seems to be ever shifting to the liberal
perspective. McCain has left his conservative
roots to join with Ted Kennedy and the other
wacko liberals to attack conservatives by taking
away their rights to free speech with McCain-
Feingold. McCain says he doesn't understand
economic, so I would exspect him to attack free
enterprise with his liberal friends in the senate. McCain hates the Bush Tax cuts, so I
exspect this will be the first thing he tries to
remove to impress his liberal friends.

McCain is a back stabber....

Roadmaster
Good morning. There is no way to take you to task for saying i don't sound like an adult. My petulant child is throwing a tantrum. I may be over it by NOv 8, or maybe not. It truly sucks to see only disastrous choices ahead. I will work and vote for conservative candidates, and write letters to be mailed in those nice free envelopes from the RNC, etc. But to my mind, it is a tossup as to which is more dangerous -- a Dem president appointing lib judges to SCOTUS, or a McCain who already has to his credit the most serious attack on free speech in the country's history. Who knows what an arrogant elitist would do as president? Hitler was elected. Character counts.

Spending
Spending is an area that has not been talked about enough in relation to our support of McCain. Conservatives are all rightly PO'd about many aspects of McCain's past but his fights against spending are something we should take as a positive. The political world would look a lot different had Bush used the veto and pushed fiscal discipline on the Republicans when they were in charge. That is something that McCain would do. Is that not worth supporting

The differences between McCain
and obama are stark and in a debate obama will look like the naive, inexperienced, dreamer that he is.

McCain's military and foreign policy credentials are huge, obamas are zero and he has already stated he will surrender in Iraq. Obama's inexperience and naivete will invite an attack.

McCain has a 24 year record of fighting pork and looking out for the taxpayers, obama has already stated he will lift the cap on SS taxes which will cost ALL of us big money because corps pay half and will pass it on to us, something he fails to mention.

Mccain will cut cap gains and corp taxes, obama will grow gov't and tax everyone to pay for it.

A point obama and all dems forget when taxing businesses, there are about 22 million businesses in the country, 20 million are small [defined as under 500 employees], that's where the jobs are, tax them more and you destroy jobs.

McCain will put strict constructionists on the bench, we all know what we'll get with a liberal like obama and the conservative cause will suffer for 30 years.

For those who post they don't trust Mccain, they need only ask those who served with him and "enjoyed" the hospitality of the North Vietnamese, what character and integrity mean, John McCain defines those words.

I Got News For You NIna
She writes: "If either Hillary or Barak wins it will be because McCain would not negotiate with his base and humbly understand that winning the election is impossible without them." Nina, what is the difference between numbers voting for Demos versus Repubs? 2-1? 3-1? Tell you anything? Focus on who is left after the election. Not enough Repubs in Congress to stop any of the newer New Deal or Great Society programs - or to stop further implementation of FDR's 2nd Bill of Rights.

TruLib
Now you are using logic on me. Yes, i keep hearing McCain is anti-earmarks, a low budget hawk. If he gets elected and if he really is, GGRRRReat. However, as one of the most powerful senators in a Republican majority, he didn't get much done to advance this fiscal responsibility agenda.

Nina May, You have captured the....
reality of the current situation perfectly.

The narrow minded view of many conservatives who refuse to face the fact that their candidate didn't win is to pout. The next thing you know, they will be claiming voter fraud, a la the Democrats, after their childishness enables Hillary or Obama to walk into the white house.

Many Democrats are turned off on their party's choice and will be supporting the Republican candidate, most likely McCain. I suggest that Republicans show similar judgement and maturity.

McCain was my 3rd choice, however if he wins the nomination, I will support him 100%. Not simply because he's a Republican but because, while not perfect, he's head and shoulders above the alternatives.

le Nina, or el Nino?
More hot air from the appointed CINO of the day [Conservative In Name Only for the uninitiated], and my response to Nina May is: "DON'T TELL ME HOW TO VOTE!"

John McCain is no conservative. He has taken every opportunity to p*ss on conservatives throughout his career, he has nothing but contempt for conservatives and that is why he is reaping contempt from conservatives now.

Let's review:

Most recently, the presumptive nominee stated that he thinks Hillary Clinton is a "person of integrity" and would make a "fine President", and I ask you all, do conservatives essentially endorse their opponents? Let alone the lying beast of Chappaqua?

Moving right along now, we have:

McCain-Feingold, a disgraceful assault upon the First Amendment, amazingly signed into law by what we were TOLD was a 'conservative' President!

McCain-Kennedy, the attempted mass amnesty for millions of illegals, again supported by our alleged 'conservative' President.

McCain-Kerry, this is the worst of all, as McCain refers to Kerry consistently as "his dear friend", and has worked in tandem with Kerry to stymie, stall and hide by secret classification, records of POWs and MIAs, and has treated the families of those missing men again: with nothing but contempt. That is not how a 'conservative' Senator should be behaving. Not then, not now, not ever.

It is my intention to vote against whatever Democrat gets nominated, but I don't have to vote for John McPain to do that. If the GOP loses the White House, that isn't the fault of conservatives, that is the fault of what USED to be the Party of Reagan, now confirmed as the RINO Party, who will have nominated nothing more than 'Democrat-Lite' and as Reagan said of the Democrats so long ago, "I didn't leave the GOP, the GOP left *me*".

Don't tell me how to vote, you got that Nina?

seawolf
with all due respect, i do not believe the inexperience angle is going to do Mccain a lick of good. Hillary has been trying to exemplify his lack of experience, his campaign is able to spin his lack of experience into a positive. Ask former president Bush how well citing the inexperience of your opponent works for you.

Unfortunately the people that are fainting, swooning and voting for Sen. Obama like the raise taxes and spending rhetoric. It is obvious he is a ultra left socialist -communist- the people voting in numbers 2 or 3 to 1 versus republican numbers, want a socialist country The NEA, college professors, media, Gores, Moores even republicans have all convinced our electorate that a socialist world is desirable.

Not to mention the number of people in this country that want to abandon Iraq.

Who is Nina May
and why is she writing such drivel?

These under-25's haven't a clue as to what's been stolen from them. They think that because they're not drowning, the ship must not be sinking.

I agree, Savy
and agree some more, but it is what it is. I personally won't retreat any farther from the liberal onslaught. We had them on the ropes, flat on the canvas, then let them up and McCain ran over to their corner as a cut man.

I have no doubt he's an honorable man, but sometimes it's misplaced or misdirected (in our eyes) yet he is loyal to a fault - even if it's towards our "enemies." This is the problem with Senators running for President. All they know is compromise, comity and concession. Like Maggie Thatcher said, "Consensus negates leadership."

Can a conservative VP placate those throwing a snit fit (mine was short)? Maybe, but more conservatives in Congress is the ONLY effective means left to us to block any liberal idiocy coming out of the WH, no matter which pandering elitist gets in.

It's just another battle in the war of ideas, and if we've lost this one, we need to re-group, re-arm, re-educate and re-invigorate ourselves for the next.

Evil (dhimmicrats) only prospers when good men do nothing, or do stupid stuff like not voting or voting 3rd party, a self-serving and short sighted exercise in futility.

There HAS to be a pony in this pile somewhere. Given the size of the pile it may take a while to find it.

Disagree with Seawolf - 1
Every word in the posting from Seawolf is false, so I'll take it apart.

"McCain's military and foreign policy credentials are huge, obamas are zero and he has already stated he will surrender in Iraq."

Totally false. Obama said he will deploy as many troops as necessary in Iraq and elsewhere to defeat Al Qaeda. This is on his web site and in speeches. No candidate in any party, anywhere has ever said they would surrender to Al Qaeda.

McCain has no experience whatsoever. He has no clue how to win in Iraq, but instead is trying to refight the VietNam war, something that is totally different. Neither McCain nor Bush has a clue how to fight an anti-insurgency campaign, but at least Bush is tough on terrorists. McCain, like Ted Kennedy, wants to close the terrorist prison at Guantanamo Bay so that terrorists gets full courtroom rights and liberal judges can let them go. McCain also wants to outlaw waterboarding, because McCain would rather risk having US troops die than have water squirted up a terrorists' nose for 30 seconds.

"McCain will put strict constructionists on the bench"

False. McCain said he wouldn't appoint judges like Alito who "wear conservatism on their sleeves". Then McCain was caught lying about it. McCain gave Democrats control to prevent Bush's judges from being approved with McCain's Gang of 14 compromise.

"what character and integrity mean, John McCain defines those words."

John McCain 2008 is a gutless coward, a liar, and a serial flip-flopper. He has no honor at all, but is a walking, talking piece of garbage.

For the past 10 years McCain has not only constantly voted liberal on every issue, he led the Democrat's fight to pass the legislation, being the main co-sponsor for Ted Kennedy and Hillary's legislation.

Disagree with Seawolf - 2
McCain just pretends to be conservative, as this story shows:

"A revealing observation was made on February 8 by Steven Brill, editor of the magazine Brill's Content, which covers the news media.

Speaking on the Fox News Channel program "The Edge", Brill said two reporters covering the McCain campaign told him, "You know, he really doesn't feel that strongly about abortion and about -- he isn't really as pro-gun as he lets on in the campaign. He has to do that because it's a Republican primary, but he's kind of let us know that he's not that hard-edged on those subjects."

Brill went on, "The point I'm making is that he was given permission, at least by these two guys [journalists], to pander. One of them actually said, 'At least when McCain panders he sort of lets us know he's doing it, and he kind of winks and kind of enjoys it, so he's a good guy.' Well, he's not letting the rest of the country know he's pandering."

In the same vein, liberal Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen wrote on December 15, "McCain's people whisper, Don't worry. He's not really so anti-abortion."

Good Bye Republicrats
As a registered Conservative (NY) I will not vote for McCain! In fact I may just vote against him or write in "None Of The Above" (NOTA).

Once again Conservatives have not left the Republican Party, the Republican Party has both sold us out and said goodbye to us indefinitely!

Third party voting beats surrendering
Staying home or voting for a conservative in a third party is an ESSENTIAL part of being a conservative. It always has been and always will be.

It is like any form of negotiations: in order to get the best bargain, we need to be willing to walk away from the table. Be tough or surrender.

Conservatives have been voting for liberal Republican candidates ever since President Reagan retired. We are told that each election is special, and that we should vote for the RINO because the president appoints supreme court justices, is commander-in-chief, and our opponents are Democrats.

We are always promised that conservatives can remake the Republican Party, yet it has just moved further to the left. We now have as nominee a Democrat in Republican clothing, John McCain, John Kerry's first choice to be Democratic vice-president in the last election.

Furthermore, we have a Republican Party which says it doesn't even want conservatives, so we may not have a choice about eventually moving to a third party. The neo-cons (ex-Democrats) who control much of the Republican party machinery have said they'd be happy if conservatives left the party, because they will be "replaced" by the Democrats which the neo-cons hope to recruit into the Republican Party by moving left. The neo-cons also want a "new conservatism", which like the neo-cons themselves, is basically Democratic liberalism on everything except fighting wars.

Nina May, Roadmaster, goatlockerlounge
Time has come to let some of our fellow conservatives go their own way. All those on the right will not vote for McCain.

So be it.

If they want to make creeps like Beastie Boy happy, so be it. If they want a White House so far left it would make John McCain look like Barry Goldwater, Rush Limbaugh and Ronald Regan rolled into to one, so be it. No White House in the history of our nation would be as liberal if Mr. Empty Suit and Michelle run the show. But this is what some conservatives want. Let them go. Let them keep acting like spoiled brats, posting crap like, "That McCain. He's too liberal for me."

We're in a time of war and that's all they can say. How charming. I guess they could care less if the nation is handed over to those who think like the N.Y. Times. The Times, btw, just loves conservatives who hate McCain and their plans to put Obama in the White House are right on track.

John Mcain is a Democrat
The problem with the "Democrat = evil" idea is that so many Democrats have infiltrated the Republican Party. McCain is the ultimate example. He was the Democrat's first choice for vice president in the last election, and has been the Republican co-sponsor of Ted Kennedy's and Hillary's liberal legislation for over 10 years.

How excited can the anti-Hillary talk be when McCain said he is so close to her that this would be the gentlest campaign in history? Right now the way McCain legislates as a Senator is to start out supporting the Democrat's bills, then finding enough liberal Republicans to avoid filibuster.

During the negotiations about the amnesty bill McCain was the only Republican who was allowed to talk to Ted Kennedy and the other Democrats during the initial writing of the bill.

Vision does count.
I happen to believe that in this year, the weakness of McCain is written on his resume. 25 years of Washington experience is little more than one year of experience warmed over 25 times. Historically, Americans rarely elect sitting Senators because they prefer outsiders to Washington. Obama, in turn, looks and acts far more like the outsider, than McCain. When Congress gets the vote of only 25% of the people, and the President of about 33%, it's easy to see tht 66% to 75% of the voters don't like the politics they seen in Washington these days. Experience may count, but the wrong experience also counts. At the same time, experience must reflect a vision for the future. McCain needs to not just have positions, but to connect those positions to a vision of a better America - not just to more of the same - which a majority of Americans are clearly dissatisfied with. They do not want someone who will find another Iraq to invade, and then invest trillions in that country as well. They are worried about medical costs, which have increased 78% in the last 7 years, and wonder what they will be able to afford in the future if this continues. They may not have an economists view of this country, but they have a sense that globalization, which has produced a weak dollar, huge trade deficits, and the flight of manufacturing jobs - is not good for America. And they sense that our reliance on outsiders to finance chronic and large budget deficits is undermining the country as well. And, when they look to the rising costs of entitlements, they wonder if those will be there for them when they get old.

If McCain seems to be more of the same - how does that get him elected? Vision counts, even if its the wrong vision. So, what's McCain's?

Conservative Delusion
Reagan raised taxes, granted amnesty to illegals and failed to hold the spending of a Democratic Congress in check.

Bush One raised taxes and governed as a right leaning moderate.

Bush two increased the size of the federal government more than any president since LBJ. Only for a few years after 1994 did the GOP congress push a true conservative agenda and that resulted in Democratic gains in the 1998 midterm elections.

We win by being a centrist right party not by being a conservative movement. The quickest way to be the minority party for a generation is to move too far to the right. Articles like this one just show the self-centered death wish of conservatives. In American politics we have to be a centrist right coalition where conservatives get part of what they want in a compromise with moderates or they get nothing at all while Democrats govern.

John McCain scares me…

Yes, John McCain scares me…He does not have the right temperament to be President or even a Senator representing the Republican Party. It could be the “Manchurian Candidate” syndrome that scares me the most or the fact he is a RINO (yes a RINO, with a conservative record); probably it’s a combination of all of the above. Just look at his past (public and private). As a Senator, what has he accomplished for the Republican Party or the country?

If John McCain is the only Republican who can beat the Democrats in 2008, as many are now saying; the Republicans and America are in deep trouble. The Democrats and MSM are just thrilled that McCain just might end up with the Republican Nomination. They can’t lose…even if he wins.

Both Dole and McCain are war heroes who are genuine patriots; however, the political system they both find themselves in is surely not patriotic. It has become a corrupted, self-serving, etc., etc. unpatriotic system that must be changed (reformed). Else, America will continue its slow and very painful decline into oblivion.

Yes, John McCain scares me…but the Democrats scare me even more! My State’s primary elections are not until April. A lot can happen between now and then. But whatever happens I will not, repeat NOT, vote for John McCain. However, come November I will not like it, I hate doing it again; but I maybe
