Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Obama economic adviser Laura Tyson has suggested that the U.S. should consider a new economic stimulus package because the $787 billion bill enacted in February was "a bit too small." Right. That $787 billion came just months after the Bush stimulus of $150 billion (how quaint it seems in retrospect), the $700 billion TARP program, the $60 billion auto bailout, and a $3.6 trillion budget for the next fiscal year among other spending orgies. President Obama has declined to rule out another gargantuan transfer payment from the future to the present. Other Democrats, Roll Call suggests, are less enthusiastic. "Bailout fatigue has settled in -- and it would be very difficult to get such a bill through the Senate," an aide told the paper.

If this massive hemorrhage of tax dollars doesn't provoke second thoughts, people have forgotten how to think. Though the Obama administration insisted that the stimulus was too urgent to permit debate, too pressing to permit time to read the legislation, only a fraction of the money allocated has actually been pushed out the door five months on. And while Americans were encouraged to conceive of the stimulus as a latter day Civilian Conservation Corps, with platoons of shovel-shouldering men marching out to repair roads, build bridges, and sing catchy folk songs, the reality is otherwise.

Ninety billion dollars of the stimulus funds are allocated not to infrastructure but to increasing the federal matching portion of state Medicaid expenses through Jan. 1, 2011. As President Obama's OMB Director Peter Orszag acknowledged in congressional testimony last year, "if federal assistance merely provides fiscal relief by paying for spending that would have occurred anyway and does not affect state and local revenues in the short run, then it provides no economic stimulus." Transferring check writing from Trenton and Sacramento and Augusta to Washington, D.C., may ease state budget crises, but by no stretch can this be considered a jobs program or anything but a trifling stimulation of economic activity. Besides, it rewards states that have failed to budget prudently and punishes those who have shown self-restraint. Will those states, most disastrously California, that got themselves into a fiscal mess by failing to control spending, be more or less likely in the future to act responsibly now that they are receiving a federal subvention?

As for that section of the stimulus that does deal with infrastructure, an Associated Press study of 5,500 planned transportation projects has found that stimulus cash is flowing less to counties with high unemployment rates and more to those with lower unemployment. "Altogether, the government is set to spend 50 percent more per person in areas with the lowest unemployment than it will in communities with the highest."

If you wonder how the government could be so inept as to fail to target aid toward those most in need, you might want to consider that when politicians make decisions, they tend to be politically motivated. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has assembled a list of 100 stimulus recipients. Here's an instructive one: The John Murtha Airport in Johnstown/Cambria County, Pa., will receive $800,000 in economic stimulus funds to repave the backup runway, though only about 20 people a day use the airport. How odd.

The Social Security Administration admits that it mailed out 10,000 checks (using stimulus funds) to "deceased persons." The SSA blamed pressure to spend the money quickly.

A non-existent lake in Oklahoma is going to get $1 million for a guardrail.

Union, N.Y., (population 56,000) was notified that it would be receiving a $578,661 stimulus grant to prevent homelessness. The town fathers were nonplussed as 1) they had never applied for the grant, and 2) they do not have a homelessness problem. But note the number: It's so non-round, so specific. Is there a department at HUD responsible for inventing plausible-sounding numbers?

The state of Wisconsin, Coburn reports, has 1,256 structurally deficient bridges, more than Florida, Colorado, Arizona and Alaska combined. Yet no stimulus funds are flowing to repair those bridges. Instead, the feds are sending $15.8 million in transportation stimulus money to repair 37 rural bridges that hardly anyone uses. Why? It seems the rural projects were more "shovel-ready" and got pushed to the head of the queue.

But perhaps the most emblematic example of your tax dollars at work is this one: Road signs are being purchased at a cost of $300 apiece advertising that "This construction project" is being paid for with stimulus funds. Illinois alone has already spent $150,000 on such signs.

Yes, it's obvious that we need more of this.

Sread it around this time
Last time the money all went to political buddies of the democrats. The same three trillion could have given all 300 million US citizens 10 grand each. That would actually have injected some money into the economy, the banks, the car companies, and reduced foreclosures.

Naa your right, we should spend it on dem pet projects, payoffs and quid pro quos. Never mind.

Boom
Wow!Did you get a load of that stock market today? Cowboys and girls you better grab that bull by the horns while he's hot and go for the ride of a life time, it can't go nowhere but up now that we have the "Obama plan" in operation. But if you're really serious about making the buck better wait till it's closer to "0" that way you can double up on your money.I am so excited.

Well, yeah
Of course they're talking about a new stinkulus package. Talking, taxing, and spending -- that is, enriching themselves, rewarding friends and relatives, punishing enemies, and buying votes from the rest of us -- are _all_ these fools know how to do. They'll keep right on doing it till the entire country collapses.

The worse fools, however, are those who keep them in power.

If Keynes Was Right
Then all this spending would be a good idea. The Democrats don't really care if he was right or not. Following his road map leads to power for them.

The problem though is that Keynes was wrong. What will come of all this spending will be a disaster. It will probably be a different disaster than the Great Depression but it could easily be as bad.

This is what happens when government ignores the restrictions put on it by the Constitution.

Obama Is Killing Us, One and All
Please see my four posts – the first posts made there today - to Donald Lambro’s “Dems’ Recruitment Failures Hurt Party Brand” and their references and proofs.

Yes dear Mona Charen, you need help!
Let me elucidate your need for common sense, and the issue of timing.

Proving Communism Works!
Obama is intent on printing enough money or taxing enough achievers to PROVE communism is the way to go! http://theblacksphere.net/site/obama-allows-capitalism-%E2 %80%93-for-now/

Really Kevin, that's communism?
Good for you, to try and rationalize your inept take.

Acorn Needs Another Stimulus.

Winning again in 3 years won’t be the cakewalk it was in 2008 so fraudulent votes will be key to a potential 2012 Obama victory.

Acorn will need to stock up on lots of booze, cigarettes, and drugs.

More! More!
Mr. Obama, please help me. The $250.00 you so graciously gave me has run out. I know it's too soon to ask,(I got it in May and here it is only July) but I need more stimulating. I've got other things I want to do. Being the CEO of my family, I naturally gave myself a bonus so there's not much left to give my family and/or to help stimulate the economy. Please send more!
I can no longer afford my auto insurance with AIG since the stimulus didn't work. They changed their name to "Century 21" and now the rates are higher. But luckily Allstate, who didn't get the stimulus is still in business and gave me an even better rate than what I had,and now I am insured with them.
A gentleman on the internet figured it out and said that if you had given all the tax payers from age 18 and up the same stimulus you gave AIG, then each of us would have received a check for $418,000 dollars.
Mr. Obama I could really use $418,000! I will promise you that I will go out and stimulate the economy, by buying an RV, to help them; will hire (only America owned and run) contractors to redo my kitchen and landscape my yard, and last but not least, a brand new automobile.
Now just imagine all the businesses we could stimulate if you had just directed the stimulus to us instead of those lousy businesses, who couldn't manage their own way out of a paper bag
Now please, please reconsider! I shall be looking for your gracious answer to our plea.

Stupid
The stimulus did not work and it wasn't because it was too small. Democrats' brains are too small!
If you freakin' liberal twits vote for these democrat idiots again in the next elections you will get exactly what you deserve. It is just a shame that the rest of us have to suffer for the stupidity of democrats as well.

Gracie
I would call it more than stupidity, when we have so called representatives ignoring the will of the people and still pass bills they admit they haven't read; when they allow the
person occupying the White House to run roughshod over the Constitution which they took and OATH to defend; when they do his bidding in all things and pass more and more liberty ending laws..I wouldn't call them stupid, I'd call them TRAITORS! And it's about time we
issued an apology (like they do for slavery)
for calling Benedict Arnold a traitor; and perhaps apologize to the Rosenberg family for executing that couple for espionage and treason.
Because since that time, treason is a badge of honor among the thieves we have in Congress. But
we know my hyperbole will never catch on, because the elected king/queenlets know what's best for us, the great unwashed.

Generational Theft - - Stimulus 2.0

Its good to know Obama is not a quitter.

He can screw-up the first stimulus and keep going back for more and Liberals will never hold him accountable.

KRUGMAN LOGIC
YEAH, RICK....THIS KIND OF NONSENSE IS LIKE THE IDIOTS THAT CAN'T AFFORD A NEW CAR THAT GO OUT AND BUY A GM MIDSIZE FOR 20K AND CLAIM THEY 'SAVED' 10K THIS YEAR BECAUSE THEY REALLY 'WANTED' TO BUY THE CADDY FOR 10K MORE....THEREFORE THEY 'SAVED' 10K THIS YEAR...AREN'T WE ECONOMICALLY SAVVY AND PRUDENT!!!

MORON!!!!!!

Shovel This
Infrastructure projects undergo a torturously long approval process which lasts for years in most cases. It includes feasability studies, design, and regulatory hurdles(envirnmental impact studies, etc) with significant time for public hearings at each stage. Frequent lawsuits add considerable time and expense to the process. All of this occurs before a project can be considered "shovel ready" at which time the bidding process begins. After bids are accepted, the winning bidder signs a contract and work may begin.

With this in mind, one can only conclude that these shovel ready projects are things that were going to be done anyway as part of the annual construction and maintenance program. To call these part of a special stimulus program is like putting lipstick on a pig, to use a quote from the campaign.

Stimulus for Stimulus!
You have to love it when the idiotic Dems end up eating their own programs! http://theblacksphere.net/site/obama-bringing-democracy-ba ck-from-russia/

useful idiots
socialism only works until the last taxpayer dies.

With 2 million jobs lost since flap ears took office, there is no sign this will quickly turn around and to keep his campaign promise of creating or saving 4 million jobs, that ups the number to 6 million jobs he must now create.

And we hear that all of 150,000 jobs have been created but no one knows where they are.

But why should flap ears let past failure keep him from pushing for more failed programs. It fully represents his failed leadership and total ignorance of economics

No Need To Worry
The Waxmans and the rest of those wonderful Liberals/Socialist in Congress are getting ready to ban SMOKING in the Military because of the impact it has on the cost of Health Care. The Obama Administration will have more than enough money to cover the cost of a new Stimulus Bill because the Soldiers will no longer have diseases caused by SMOKING. Now just in case I am wrong, they can also ban fast food in the Military, and kick Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King and others out of the WAR ZONE. Based on their global warming mentality, this should really save them some money on Health Care. In fact since Soldiers would no longer Smoke or eat junk food, they would have a zero impact on Health Care because they never would get sick. That should be enough money for three or four more Stimulus Bills before the elections in 2010 and 2012 to send money to the Unions and Campaign Contributors like Acorn.

Cinninati Ohio

Obama have every major network's cameras there in Cinninati announcing his stimulus package would save 25 Police Officer jobs.

Cinninati just laid off 300 Police Officers.

No cameras, no coverage, no making Obama look foolish.

Dear Gracie
Now you know how the South felt when forced by Gun point back into the union by the Great Separator, old Abe Lincoln.
And bless your heart, 149 years ago America's first Caesar came from Illinois and now here in 2009 another Caesar from Illinois hath appeared to take away more of our liberties only this time the Democrats have changed places with the Republicans of yesteryear.
History does repeat itself sho' enough! The only difference so far, is that he hasn't yet sent out the storm troopers yelling "The Union, The Union"

Rick in MN
"Yes dear Mona Charen, you need help!
Let me elucidate your need for common sense, and the issue of timing.

http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/05/bruce-bartlett- misstates-the-problem/"

Nice! A NYT editorial. That's a neutral source if I ever saw one. Why not use DailyKoolAid while your at it?

The very graph you cite states that unemployment would be 8% without and 8.5% with the stimulus. Earth to Rick, it's 9.5 and climbing. At what point will you guys admit it ain't working? When do you stop throwing good money after bad?

"We misread how bad the economy was..." Joe Biden

Also absurd considering his greatness Obama campaigned on the US being in the worse recession ever.

The Reparations Stimulus.
Yes Mona this is the one, the reparations stimulus, the precursor was the Senate's recent apology for slavery, apparently Bill Clintons' wasn't enough and you know Laura Tyson is a card carrying member of the NAACP the same organisation that dubbed Monica's boyfriend the first Black President of these United States back when the Clintons were African-American and Hillary was "no ways tired".
Yes lord, can I get an aaaaaamen. This new reparations stimulus is a long time coming plus Rev. Wright just retired and has to pay for that new caddy and since his Parishioner-In-Chief left him in the lurch, well, it's the least he can do, to sign off.

Women ask and Women get
When Obama announced his Stimulus appropriation, he promised millions of "shovel-ready" jobs. We were told that the purpose of this extraordinary deficit spending in the Stimulus package was to jolt the economy.

But the feminists then demonstrated the death grip they hold over Obama and the leaders of the Democratic Party. The feminists had no sympathy with the fact that men were victims of most of the lost jobs because the majority of manufacturing and construction jobs are men's jobs. The segments of our economy dominated by women, social services, education, health, child care, and welfare have actually gained jobs during this recession.

Nevertheless, the feminists demanded that half the Stimulus jobs be given to women.

Obama gave two of his economists the task of calculating the gender ratio of jobs to be created by the Stimulus legislation. They reported that women had only 20 percent of jobs lost in the recession, but would get 42 percent of Stimulus-created jobs.

In Georgia, for example, two-thirds of the $3.9 billion Stimulus money will go to existing social programs.

Democratic Stimulus Pork
I guess that 787 Billion dollars of which only 10% has actually been spent and only 20-25% will get spent over the next year and a half isn't enough for all of the Democrats to steal their fair share.

This first stimulus, and I hope the only one, is meant to stimulate Democrat elections and re-elections only. With the way the economy is cratering under the inept watch of Obama's economic team, the Democrats are realizing they are going to need a lot more dollars to throw at getting Democrats elected and re-elected in 2010, and 2012.

Are the signs being made in prisons?
WE cannot reclaim America without Americans reclaiming their souls.

Great idea
Take money out of the economy then put it back in and tax it as it passes through. Brilliance.

Economies can't be stimulated by governments. Everything that government uses to "stimulate" has to come out of that exact same economy first. The more it taxes, the more it takes out. The more it borrows, the less anyone else can borrow. The more it prints, what you already have becomes worth less.

You can't fill a pool using the water that's already in it.
