Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

In Cairo, President Obama told (was it for the 100th time?) the story of his African father and American mother. This story has worked well for him in the American context, and he seems to believe that it will beguile the rest of the world as well. We shall see whether this experiment with autobiography as foreign policy has purchase.

But while some of his appeal to Muslims for common ground was certainly benign, there were aspects of the speech that may create more problems than they solve.

Obama has signaled to the Arab world that his administration is willing to pressure Israel about settlements in the West Bank. Asked before his Middle East trip about relations with Israel, President Obama told National Public Radio, "Part of being a good friend is being honest. And I think there have been times where we are not as honest as we should be about the fact that the current direction, the current trajectory, in the region is profoundly negative..." (Whenever someone starts a sentence by advising that "good friends tell each other the truth," duck.) Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spelled out the president's policy bluntly: "He wants to see a stop to settlements -- not some settlements, not outposts, not 'natural growth' exceptions."

*** Special Offer ***

President Obama presumably wants Israel to uproot the 300,000 Jewish settlers who live in the West Bank to make way for a Palestinian state in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza. This is the "solution" to the Palestinian question that has been endorsed, formally and informally, by the last three presidents and most of the foreign ministries in the world. It has even been endorsed by many Israelis, including former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who offered 95 percent of the West Bank and all of Gaza to Yasser Arafat.

The idea of handing over the West Bank to the Palestinians lost favor in Israel after Gaza was evacuated (at considerable pain) in 2005 because the area became a launching pad for missiles aimed at the Israeli heartland. But President Obama has a solution to that. It's nothing much -- just the wholesale reversal of Palestinian political culture.

"Palestinians must abandon violence," the President instructed. "Resistance through violence and killing is wrong and does not succeed. For centuries, black people in America suffered the lash of the whip as slaves and the humiliation of segregation. But it was not violence that won full and equal rights. It was a peaceful and determined insistence upon the ideals at the center of America's founding. ... Now is the time for Palestinians to focus on what they can build. The Palestinian Authority must develop its capacity to govern, with institutions that serve the needs of its people."

Is that all? If Mahmoud Abbas were like Martin Luther King Jr. and the Palestinians were like African-Americans at Selma and Birmingham, things would be very different. In fact, if the Palestinians were not wedded to terrorism and violence; did not celebrate as heroes and martyrs those who blow themselves up in shopping malls and restaurants; were not beset with corruption, steeped in anti-Semitism, and drunk on maximal claims, (SET ITAL) there would be no conflict (END ITAL). Israel would have long since given up huge portions of the West Bank, as it gave all of Sinai back to the Egyptians.

And then there is the small matter of Hamas. One of Hamas' leaders proclaimed as recently as January that his organization "will not rest until we destroy the Zionist entity." Hamas' charter is explicit that "Initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences, are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement." The charter also looks forward to the day when "The stones and trees will say O Muslims, O Abdullah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him." Hamas controls Gaza, and, were it not for the presence of the Israel Defense Forces, would control the West Bank as well.

President Obama, who seems to live in a realm where wishing makes it so, waved his magic wand in Hamas' direction, too. "Hamas does have support among some Palestinians," he said, "but they also have responsibilities. To play a role in fulfilling Palestinian aspirations, and to unify the Palestinian people, Hamas must put an end to violence, recognize past agreements, and recognize Israel's right to exist."

Good luck with that. In the meantime, Palestinian hopes for American pressure on Israel have been ignited -- with what conflagrations to come we do not yet know.

Magic Wand - Magical Thinking
Ali Sina lists magical thinking as one of the hallmarks of pathological narcissism.

"- Ignores data that conflict with his fantasy world, or with his inflated and grandiose self-image. This has to do with magical thinking. Obama already sees himself as president because he is firmly convinced that his dreams, thoughts, and wishes affect reality."

MSNBC was very proud of Obama

MSNBC was very proud of the content of Obama's speech in Cairo. They went down 8 points that was shocking to hear coming from an american president.

Off course what they left out was that Bush also gave in speeches talked about 7 of the 8 points. The only point Bush did not cover was the removal of a duly elected President of Iran back in the early 50's as a by-product of the cold war.

But then again, Bush also didn't cover Bill Clinton removing a duly elected President in Yogoslavia.

My guess if 50 years from now some future President will have to give apologes for Bill Clinton removing Milosovic from power.

Wishful thinking?
It would be nice if Obama were only indulging in wishful thinking. Actually, with the speech conceived and written by others and read from a teleprompter, the Obama gang is paving the way for abandoning Israel. They are indifferent to the moral and cultural cost of such ignorance and cowardice, because they are not going to have to face real elections in the foreseeable future.

Reachout blow back
BHO reached out to the Iranians; they responded by locking up an American journalists as a spy.

BHO reached out to the North Koreans; they responded by testing missiles and detonating a nuclear device.

BHO reaches out to Muslims; gotta hope this is third time lucky as it seems that when BHO reaches out people get mighty riled and hate America more.

Barry has spent too much time
in Fantasyland.

... And not enough time studying history.

"When you wish upon a star ..." Apologies to Walt Disney. I don't think he ever intended for his amusement park to dictate national policy.

well no
If Barak had offered to uproot the settlements then he would have offered 100% of the West Bank back instead of 95%. And Obama is pushing for a halt to settlement expansion not, at least prior to a deal, the uprooting of all of the settlements. In practice only the settlements that cannot be incorporated into Israel are likely to be given back in a final deal.

What is so funny is that Charen first tries to portray it as a horror that Israelis might have to give back occupied territory. And then she presents it as a given that if the Palestinians simply peacefully accepted occupation the Israelis would end it. Would they do this by going through the horror of giving back the occupied territory? Or would they take the lack of terrorism as meaning that peace has arrived and continue the status quo with Palestinians peacefully accepting occupation?

Charen clearly prefers the latter choice. Talk about wishful thinking.

... go troll somewhere else. Doesn't the Daily Kos need your insight?

BARACK OBAMA: HISTORY'S TRAGIC FOOL
Though Obama is the US President he's not morally or intellectaully big enough to break Bibi Netanyahu and the Israeli people. Practically all Israelis are of one voice saying: NO FREEZE ON SETTLEMENTS! NO CONCESSIONS TO PALESTINIANS! Obama threatening Israel to come up with a peace plan or else is probably bluff. If anything Obama will break himself in trying to force Israel into an impossible peace with the Jew hating, terror loving despicable Palestinians.

Obama is in a no win situation in the Middle East. He's damed if he does and damned if he doesn't. Forcing Israel into a premature peace will end in a worse catastrophe of bloodshed and violance than the first and second intefada combined. To do nothing means dashing the expectations of the Moslem masses and losing their goodwill and love-a terrible loss for an Islamophilic narcissist.

If you read my two pieces "The Ominous Death of Madelyn Durham" and "Barack Obama: Transformational President or History's Tragic Fool" you will understand that this poor confused muddle headed man has catastrophe, failure and ruin written all over him.

I hope every Jew who voted for Obama
Is choking on it now.

Same tune, different leader
Good grief. How many times are we going to hear this refrain? A leader steps up and says the violence in the Middle East will end if only Israel gives back the land so there can be a Palestinian state (isn't Jordan a Palestinian state?) and if Hamas/others put an end to their attacks.

Whatever. Hamas has made it clear they are not interested in occupying land adjacent to a Jewish state. Do they teach revisist history at Occidental College, Columbia, and Harvard Law?

BHO merely adds his name to the list of those who:
a) just don't get it, or
b) get it, but don't really care . . .

Hamas wants Israel destroyed. They cannot be more plain in stating their intentions. Asking them to play nice is an exercise in futility. I'm a lone citizen, but I'm getting tired of this song and dance.

It's all about being loved
I doubt that Mr. Obama's speech was given to produce any particular result concerning Israeli/Palestinian issues or American/Muslim relationships. He just wants the personal adulation of the Muslim masses and is convinced that eloquent words will win them over. He just might be in campaign mode for the presidency of a future world government.

How is that for a scary scenario? Far-fetched perhaps, but there is a part of me that cannot rule that out.

O - WTBC?
Obama - Where's The Birth Certificate?

Luc from Ny

You know as a non-jew, I sit back and watch Americnan-Jews constantly vote for Liberal Democrats who are more than willing to endanger the security of Israel and think to myself, "Well, if they don't care, why should I?"

Yes Democrats never announce they are anti-Israel. But their actions speak lounder than words.

I wonder if Actress/Comedian Sarah Silversteen is proud of her internet campaign ads urging Jews to vote for Obama now? I wonder if she will be proud when U.S. taxpayers dollars are used to fund Palestinians making bombs to blow up Israeli children on a school bus.

Rush Limbaugh said it best...
"Ignorance is our most expensive commodity."

Obama does not understand that Hamas and the PLO don't want to co-exist next to Israel. They wand Israel gone, done, finito, off the map. To expect Israel to "work and sacrifice" to build a two-state relationship is highly ignorant of Obama. It's time for the Palestinians who have somehow obtained refugee status where no one has kicked them out of their own country (because they do not belong to a specific country, and never have), it't time for them to step up to the plate and come with hat in hand to the Israelis. But, it's not going to happen. I'm surprised that they even still exist because Israel could, at any minute, grind them into powder, and yet they continue to listen to the international community who is just as ignorant as anyone else about the situation. Anyone who calls the Israelis the aggressors after watching the events of the last ten years unfold is one of our most expensive commodities!

TO Joel the Opressor-Liber
If the Democrats would stop trying to deprive we Americans of Life, Liberty, and Property, there would be peace and prosperity in THIS country! This BS of collective statism has got to stop. They are in the process of making our Constitution null and void, and that includes the 1st ten amendments--our Bill of Rights. They loathe the fact that the Bill of Rights is written for individuals and not for groups, but they haven't let that stop them for, for now with the politics of group identities, they are dividing us as never before, and making the Bill of Rights a joke.

obama and cairo
Do you far right wingers ever get tired of proving that you are not the brightest log on the fire! What Obama is suggesting is a suspension of disbelief and to assume that it is possible to talk to people that "clammed up" under the Bush-Cheney attitude of my way or the highway! If you want to start over you give people room to either cooperate or hang themselves. It is their choice and you give them multiple opportunities to either succeed or hang themselves. Bushey, who while still still governor of Texas talked about how he needed a war to be a "great President" and had that agenda and the desire to punish Sadaam for trying to assasinate his father had no choice other than to go to war with Iraq UNDER HIS SELF-IMPOSED starting points. GROW UP and try to thinking independently from what Rush and Sean tell you to think!

STUPID COLUMN ANWAY
Well, no one has responded to what I SAID. Perhaps some of you are starting to wake up to the fact that when the FAR-RIGHT WING has nothing to say all they can resort to is NAME CALLING or MAKING UP FACTS that don't exist. DO ME A FAVOR, and try pretending you are neither RIGHT wing or LEFT wing and spend a month thinking neutrally and watch out for those who basically engage in NAME CALLING when they have NOTHING to say! I believe that you might find yourself somewhere in the MIDDLE with NO REGRETS!

Mike-WA June 6, 10:26PM
U say "I believe that you might find yourself somewhere in the middle with NO REGRETS!"
I'm a 25+ Year Military Vet who was "Present" at the end of the Korean thing and SMACK IN THE MIDDLE OF VIETNAM for closer to 4 Years than 3..Due to "Peaceniks" who made the same noises you utter we got out of Vietnam and MOST of us who were there HAVE A LOT OF "Regret"..
War is BAD Business and I don't think U'd like dealing with it much, but sometimes *Talking Nice* is FUTILE.Thinking "Neutrally" may sound good but you, and that's Ur privelege, but I'm more of an *OPINION" person and Neutral is very seldom my Position!! Have a Nice DREAM..CHEERS

Mona Charen is a COMPLETE HYPOCRIT
Ms. Charen (a complete apologist for Israel) focuses like a laser beam on the acts of one side (the Palestinians) while being COMPLETELY BLIND to the mass violence inflicted by the Israelis on innocent Palestinians. The number of dead and wounded Palestinians is easily 10 times the casualties on the other side. And yet Ms. Charen is COMPLETELY SILENT on Israel’s imperialist and terrorist acts against the Palestinians!!!!! Ms. Charen is nothing less than a COMPLETE HYPOCRIT!!!!

Furthermore, let’s not forget that it’s the Israelis who OCCUPY Palestinian lands (why do you think the land is referred to as the OCCUPIED territories????!!!!), and the Palestinians are DEFENDING themselves against OCCUPATION AND OPPRESSION. Ms. Charen, along with other FANATICS, have a fanatical and insane belief that God gave the Jews all the land, and therefore Israel is justified in CONQUERING the land and expelling the people who’ve lived there for centuries. There can be no other explanation for Ms. Charen’s ardent support for the Israel’s COLONIAL/IMPERIAL RULE and PRACTICE OF APARTHIED in the OCCUPIED territories!!!!!
