Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I am so angry at the government right now I could spit.

I know that many of my fellow conservatives are upset about the economic stimulus package. And rightfully so. When President Obama said that “now is not the time” for companies to make a profit, I wonder when he thinks the time would be right.

As he presents a mandate to limit the salaries of CEOs who run companies being bailed out by the American taxpayer, I wonder how far that will go. Never before has the term “slippery slope” held such perilous meaning for the United States.

But I’m not livid over Wall Street or the TARP plan or Obama’s socialist-leaning speeches and TV appearances right now.

I’m fired up about TV converter boxes.

This week, the House voted 264-158 to postpone the shutdown of analog TV signals to June 12th. As you’ve probably heard, the switch from analog TV to digital was supposed to take place on February 17th.

But Democrats are worried that poor and rural and minority Americans are simply not prepared to obtain the $40.00 converter box that they will need to watch their favorite episode on television in crystal clear digital clarity.

Apparently, there are more than 6.5 million households in America that still rely on analog TV sets to pick up over-the-air broadcast signals. This, despite the fact that the feds have come up with a massive welfare program to hand out “vouchers” that enable people to request up to two converter boxes per household.

Of course, these vouchers don’t come from the digital TV fairy. You and I are paying for this scheme and to date, we have spent $1.34 billion dollars to make sure every American can watch “American Idol” or “Jerry Springer” whenever they wish.

Forget those shows, this whole debacle is like living in an episode of “The Twilight Zone.”

While headlines are being generated about the Democrat mindset of nationalizing private businesses and bailing out failed ventures, we seem to be ignoring one of the most massive bail-outs ever: the taxpayer-funded process of transitioning people from analog to digital television.

Would someone please tell me why any of us should pay for our neighbors digital converter box?

Every time I ask this question on my radio show, I’ll inevitably get a caller who says, “Well, Mike, since the government is forcing this technical change, they need to pay for it.”

I try to patiently remind these misguided folks that “the government” is us! You and I are subsidizing the cost of all of these converter boxes. So now it can be officially declared that the United States taxpayer is footing the bill for TV viewers who are either too poor or uneducated or lazy to go down to Best Buy and buy a $40.00 converter box for their TV set.

I don’t really understand why there’s this grumbling about bailing out failing companies. Now that we have to pay for people to enjoy re-runs of “Hee-Haw” every night, we might as well just become completely dependent on the government for everything.

After all, there’s nothing quite like watching a movie in a home theatre. Perhaps we can start paying for those for poor people. Imagine, taxpayer-funded surround sound all around!

This is nuts.

I interviewed Sen. Tom Coburn from Oklahoma today and he disgustedly told me that he voted against this insane “coupon/voucher” program for TV converter boxes. We’re going to need solid conservatives like him in Washington to fight this bailout/welfare/ socialist crowd more than ever.

As I continually ask people why Democrats are hell-bent on forcing this program down our throats, I heard one of the best explanations from a guy in Los Angeles this week: nothing affects change like propaganda. And since the left gets to run most of the mainstream television media, they want to make sure their distortions and lies are delivered to every single American they can reach via the old “boob tube.”

When President Obama wanted to pretend to be remorseful over Tom “I-don’t-pay-my-taxes” Daschle, he made the TV rounds like an eager author getting his first shot on the Oprah show.

He understands the power of the medium.

And he wants to control the message.

What better way to do that than making sure the taxpayers are forced to pay for every television set that needs to be converted from analog to digital?

A chicken in every pot.

And a digital TV converter box in every American home, courtesy of the taxpayer.

Sick.

I live in a rural community. We have satellite as an option. In July I cancelled my satellite and my News Herald, and my Plain Dealer.... because I was sick of the bull in meida (lots of BHO and HRC), didnt want the kids all brainwashed either. We have forgotten that tv is a priveledge not a right, not a necessity. I am with you, of all the bailouts this is the worst.

Digital Isn't Much Better Than Analog...
Perhaps I should bring up an issue that most people promoting DTV have skipped upon: The fact that it doesn't entirely eliminate the problem of interference. It's true that you receive a crystal-clear picture via DTV than on analog (or STV, as I call it, for "Standard") but it doesn't eliminate some of the interference problems you usually would have while using a TV antenna. For example, what you would call "analog snow" on STV becomes a different problem I like to call "pixilated distortion." Essentially, the image at certain points may erupt into a series of colored squares when interference hits a TV antenna. Plus, you also lose the sound during those intervals, which usually doesn't happen via STV. On top of that, if the interference gets worse, you end up losing the channel (another problem you wouldn't worry about with STV), ergo you'll have to re-scan the entire channel spectrum just to get it back, which takes on average 1-to-2 minutes, which is very irritating to say the least.

Truthfully, I simply cannot understand why we need to transition from analog to digital TV. Your viewing experience isn't that much of an improvement based on what I've said. It's also like the taste between vinyl and digital: Even though I have an iPod, I like playing records on record players. I also like using a vintage 1970s B&W television for nostalgic purposes when I feel like pretending to visit a simpler time like the 1950s (even though I was born in 1987.) Why should I go through the hassle of unhooking my DTV set from the regular TV so I can enjoy TV using a B&W TV with the set-top? It's irritating.

Just throw the TV out
I grew up in a foreign third-world country in the 1950s without any TV (my father was a US gov. employee stationed in Turkey). I read a lot of books and did a lot of activities I otherwise would not have done, and I am glad we had no TV.

Back in America, we got a TV like everybody else.

Sixteen years ago, when my daughter was born, we threw out the TV, knowing what a bad influence it is on kids. We have not regretted it a minute. Our daughter reads, writes books, draws, paints, creates clay figurines, sews clothes, does woodworking projects, and we converse a lot. We watch old movies, good movies, on a video player. Our daughter has never asked for a TV, and in fact dislikes TV programming when she sees it.

When we go to relatives' houses, and typically see two three TVs going in the house, with people staring at them like zombies, we rejoice we are free of the "turn-on drug." When we sit with them and see what they are watching, we are usually disgusted. The shows and commercials are often obscene, news is liberal crap in short sound-bytes (TV got Obama elected--that's how bad it is). TV is nothing but continual sales pitches, "sugar-coated advertising," and the sugar is bitter these days.

Why do people put up with this?

Americans are nuts. Forget this analog-digital nonsense. Throw your TV out, and be free.

Why the switch to DTV?
DTV doesn't take up as much bandwidth as STV. The original reason for "forcing" the issue was to free up bandwidth for other uses, such as local emergency communication networks (e.g. E911, etc.). This has been in the works for at least a couple of years, so we can't blame it on Mr. O.

As for the effect of interference, the term is "tiling," at least in the cable tv industry.

BTW
Even though I work in the cable industry, I avoid watching tv as much as possible. I agree with Jaybird that we'd all be better off tossing the cable boxes (I still like to watch the occasional good movie on DVD or Blu-ray).

Slippery Slope

Sorry Mike, your argument about slippery slopes is not logical. It is fallacious, and Aristotle would certainly poke you in the eye for making such a plebian error.

On the issue of converter boxen, I do agree; we should not have to pay for our neighbors TV viewing "rights".

Throw the TV out the window !

dont be so bitter, mike
we must have tv, even if the taxpayers are forced to pay for it, because tv is absolutely essential to the daily updating of orthodox liberals on who they should hate today. the poor dears cant read, and if they didnt have tv to watch keith, and chris, and all the rest, they might start thinking for themselves, and that would be the death of the democratic party. without the democrats, who would rule us? just shut up and pay, mike.

Great article, Mike!
... I agree, 100%! -- I've been positively BOILING ever since I read about this oh-so-important "legislation!" This issue is only important to libs, because they're intellectually lazy people who rely upon Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, et al, to tell them what they should think and how they should vote. -- Absolutely PATHETIC!!! -- and sad to see that this is what has come of America. Our founding fathers must be rolling in their graves!

Got my boxes
We actually had analog shutoff in Hawaii last month (can't really call it a switch since the digitals have been broadcast for a couple years already). I got my 2 converter boxes (cost $60 - $40 coupon). IIUC the money for coupons came from the government auction of spectrum so if the companies that want spectrum want to pay me as an incentive to leave the spectrum, that's their business. Actually, the question I have is how did the Gov't come to "own" the spectrum in the first place, in order to auction it? That was one tremendous power-grab. Then again, the power grab was in 1934 by socialist FD Roosevelt, role model for Obama.

The reason
liberals want us to pay for converter boxes is because every vote counts. They know their propaganda works well on these less educated people.

the light bulb war
I want to know if the government is also going to pay for my florescent lights when the ban on incandescent takes affect.
What about all the people who will lose their jobs in the incandescent light factories around the world if these destroyers of the planet are not eliminated. We will probably have to pay to retrain these people into more environmentally responsible jobs.
And if Global Warming is such a crisis why will we be allowed to use our incandescent heat factories for the next few years before the ban goes into effect? Why don't we just treat them like cigarettes and put a tax on them, or make you buy carbon credits to further enrich Algore.

Converter Boxes
There's nothing more stupid than when a staunch conservative talk show host goes nuts over an issue and comes up on the wrong side.

Truth is that some folks long ago (cable and satellite companies), long ago figured out how to make fortunes selling what used to be free. Mike, cable and satellite TV are not available to millions of Americans. Also there are millions of us who long ago decided not to pay for something we can still get for free. Free in the sense that we can still get an hour or two worth of entertainment an evening without being glued to 140 channels of tripe half our lives.

If the industry wants to go digital and the government approves, what's wrong with us, the government, helping people pay for the switch. After all the industry is not switching to digital as a act of kindness, they're doing it to make a bundle.

wrightsrong is wrong
Where's the numbers Mr./Ms. wrightsrong. What percentage of the those taking advantage of the coupon program are really classified as poor older Amercans?

I know several upper mid-class that took full advantage of the program.

I wonder if there was a black market for the coupons? With the high cost of cable TV, many in the city use broadcast TV, and may have had 3 or 4 TVs, all of which would need a converter box. It would be pretty simple for them to get a friend, relative, or neighbor to request coupons to use for those additional TV sets. Certainly room for fraud within the program with little or no enforcement.

Television converter boxes
This is simply one more way for voters to be beholden to, dependent upon, government specifically the Democrats. That's also what the $900,000,000,000 is for. Our country is doomed to mediocracy. (It also is the continued diminishment of responsibility in Amercan...can't do it on time, nevermind we'll give you more time and more money,)

It's not about TV...
...it's about BUYING VOTES.

Every last damn thing the Dumbocrats do is about BUYING VOTES.

And they'll put the country $10 Trillion dollars in debt to do it.

The only way we're going to get rid of them is to shoot them.

Where's my speedloader?

Rural Myth,
The idea of millions of poor, rural people being out there utterly dependent on broadcast TV is a myth.

Every time I've lived in a rural area, even today as I live in a cluster of small towns surrounded by pastureland and cropland, there are no broadcast TV signals to receive.

A couple months ago our budget dictated that we choose between the satellite TV and the internet and we needed the internet for our business. If we had the money to install the massive, rooftop antenna required to bring in the weak broadcast signals that make it this far we'd have the money to get the satellite service back.

The boxes are pure pandering to the URBAN poor (the only poor living within reach of the broadcast signals), and we all know which party the urban poor vote for in overwhelming numbers.

The7Sticks

Ah, another luddite speaks. I heard the same arguments against color TV in the late 50's and again when the switch to digital sound came in the 80's.

The plain fact of the matter, Mr. Sticks, is that you're talking about a weak signal situation, which causes problems in both analog and digital streams.

About ten years ago, I dumped my cable company because of constant outages, steeply rising prices and poor service. I went to DirecTV. The difference in the quality of the picture and sound was (and is) startling.

In all of that ten years, I've been without service for a grand total of (less than) an hour and almost all of it was due to snow building up on the dish. A swish of a broom and back in business.

This whole flap brings into digital clarity just what an incompetent amateur Obama is and just how stupid the American unwashed is. The media has been pointing out for nearly two years that the deadline was February 17th and because 6% of the households can't defer their lottery tickets, cigarettes or beer long enough to buy a $60 converter box, The ONE sees fit to make the industry eat the millions it's going to cost to delay the switchover.

Obama SAYS he's trying to help the economy, but the moron just keeps throwing monkey wrenches into the works. (And no, I did not mean that as a racial slur)

Who cares?
We live in rural Indiana, where we live we either have to get cable or a dish. 16 years ago the wife and I decided that it wasn't worth the cost..there are more are far better ways to spend your time than sitting like a zombie glued to the TV.

We have pleanty of things to do that don't require a TV. We do a lot of camping in the summer. Last summer I watched a guy spend at least 30 minutes setting up his dish. That was on a Friday evening and they left Sunday about noon. You can't do without a TV for 48 hours, my God, get a life!

TV conversion push back
Mike

All presidents want to control there message, it is just that, President Obama has had years of practice and the right connections to teach him the ropes like no other in the past. It is because he also has a better understanding of our connected society; can you say the blackberry AKA krackburry or the I-Phone that he can pull those strings of both houses in congress days after a similar bill to push the date back, died on the floor last week. I agree the converter box program was setup badly. It should have been for those who don’t already have cable or satellite and elderly or disabled on the appropriate program. I know of people who got there coupons for 2 boxes and held on to them until they expired. I also know of people who have gotten them under different names and addresses (home address PO Box) and still have not gotten the boxes. And some do have ether cable or satellite. I exclude cable and satellite subscribers because if you choose to watch over the air and have not gotten a new not used TV in the last 18 months (digital tuner mandate by FCC), for whatever reason, you should be able to afford 40.00 at minimum per analog set for that option. I think this process has been postponed 4 times now in the lat 5 years. The spectrum that is to be freed up is to be sold or is already sold via FCC auction to companies for high speed network development of all sorts, Cell, mobile broadband, city wide wireless (maybe). If only they put that money toward our deficit of 10.7 trillion http://www.federalbudget.com/ as of 27 Jan 2009.

J Gray

No TV
I agree, I'm 56, I've lived without TV off and on for most of my life... and I would not expect the government to buy this or for us to pay for us... I'd rather they "FEED" someone in our country that's going hungry...

Taxpayers no paying for converter boxes!
Sorry Mike, but both you and Rush have missed the boat on this one.

The converter boxes are being financed (theoretically) from the PROFIT made from the government's SALE of the frequencies that analog TV currently occupies.

The government netted $19.6 Billion from this auction (http://www.rcrwireless.com/article/20080321/SUB/594478393/-1/700-mhz-auction-ends) and I see no reason why it shouldn't be obligated to buy converter boxes for those who are do not subscribe to cable or satellite.

Why is analog being killed?
I don't disagree with Gallagher, but I am still perplexed at why there is no outcry for this government mandated elimination of analog broadcasting. Can anyone tell me why stations can not choose to continue broadcasting both digital and analog signals?

Why not tell the WHOLE story?
I'm thinking you're a cable or satellite subscriber, so you don't care about those of us that won't pay for that rip off. Did you do the research on where that money came from for the coupons? Yes, "us", the government, who just made what: $10 BILLION plus PROFIT for selling those airwaves to private companies. So you're going to begrudge giving back 15 cents on the dollar to people who don't want to pay for cable? I need six converter boxes for the changeover- one per TUNER, not per TV (VCR, DVR, etc).

Digital TV Boxes
Once again the government is demonstrating its desire to pre-emtively assume responsibility for every "non-thinking, lazy or irresponsible act of the 'great' American people". Just think. What would happen if Didital TV were initiated on Feb 17th. How long would it take those without the "box" to find $40.00 and buy one? Keep in mind, TV has been advertising this change for overa year with when, where and how to get a "box", or extra help in getting the "box". Pray for God to help America!

To David in FL
Because the government auctioned off the frequencies that analog TV uses:

http://www.rcrwireless.com/article/20080321/SUB/594478393/- 1/700-mhz-auction-ends

The auction and elimination of analog signals was first announced @2005

Change on Feb 17th, then what?
gnce again the government is demonstrating its desire to pre-emtively assume responsibility for every "non-thinking, lazy or irresponsible act of the 'great' American people". Just think. What would happen if Didital TV were initiated on Feb 17th. How long would it take those without the "box" to find $40.00 and buy one? Donald

A great portion of this country's population is hopelessly stupid, lazy and imbued with a sense of victimhood.

Consider that if those idiots who aren't ready for the switchover had, when they started announcing the Feb, 17th deadline, put $.50 a week in a jar, they'd have more than enough money to buy the converter.

But then, that would've required a process of thought and some self discipline.

How many
pols voted for the delay so they could give free cable or new TV's to people who ignored the announcements so they could get more votes from them who want to keep the free cable?

David

You act as if a television signal is some sort of inherent right.

The digital television is far superior to analog sets. They use less energy, they're lighter and more compact. The digital signal can be displayed on phones, PDA's, in car TV's and any number of other devices. The applications are endless.

Sans TV
I have heard that the average American spends 7 years of their life watching TV. What a total waste of time! Upon hearing this, I decided that I could do a lot of things with those 7 years. I will not be getting a digital converter, and can live without TV as I have done for the last 5 years.

Maybe many Americans would not be so obese if they spent their time being active rather than as zombified-couch potatoes watching the boob tube. Time to get off the couch, get rid of the potato chips and beer and do something else with our lives.

http://www.traversecityconservative.blogspot.com/

Blair
Blair-

Who exactly is this government you say made a profit off of selling the analog signals? Would that be us the American tax payer? I thought so. I guess we tax payers are paying for the converter boxes then now aren't we.

The legislators will always legislate to the lowest common denominator and that is usually democrats who can't find their butt with both hands because the government is usually holding their hands.

Say what?!
Mike, you've entirely glossed over the fact that in another display of unconstitutional government meddling, analog TV was legislated away. Where does the government get off dictating how I can send or receive a TV signal? How can you claim a conservative mantle when you are willing to endorse the fact that government is now FORCING me to pay out the nose for something that was once free? Please explain to me how this is within the federal government's purview, because I certainly can't find any authority for the government to dictate how information is disseminated to the public in the Constitution. On another level, the digital signal just plain sucks. I can no longer record a movie or watch a sporting event without incessant picture blackouts and pixilation. Give me analog any day; I dont need high def so I can see the blackheads on some actor's nose.

Blair
$650,000,000 of the "buy the votes plan" is for converters and it comes out of workers pocket.

I don't know
Considering that a whole lot of peoples TV sets are about to become obsolete, and the reason is because the Gov't decided to sell the Spectrum for digital uses, I don't have a whole lot of problem with the gov't giving out coupons for a converter box.

At least there's some justification here, i.e. the situation occurred due to direct, verifiable gov't actions.

I wouldn't have a problem with the gov't compensating someone if they passed an environmental reg that lowered their property value substantially, and I see this as sort of the same thing.

And conservatives shouldn't be lecturing anyone about whether they should be watching Tv or not. It's an individual choice.

If this was the worst they did I'd be one happy camper.

Don’t get your boxers all in a bunch.
Hey Mike,

Don’t get your boxers all in a bunch. The deadbeats need to feel comfortable and to be entertained while they are waiting on their expected continued entitlements.

Get with the times man. Welcome to the United Socialist States of America (USSA). This country doesn’t need self-reliance or a stinkin Constitution, that is old school. That old document was used and flushed down the toilet.

The House and Senate are irrelevant now anyway. The Treasury Secretary can now authorize Federal funding without the Ways and Means committee and House and Senate approval. The Supreme Court says the EPA has power to regulate Greenhouse Gas Emissions (
http://www.beveridgediamond.com/news-151.html ) so any human activity (which produces CO2 that is all activities) can be regulated by a quasi-governmental entity, which also does not need House and Senate approval. EPA has the power to social engineer human activity. Any excessive human movement is going to cause ‘Climate Change’ anyway. Relax an watch TV.

Who needs a Republic represented government when one man i.e. Barack Hussein Obama can govern by imperial means? Remember, work hard millions on welfare depend on you.

Some Answers

Why is anolog being killed: Can't do analog and digital broadcasting because the frequency spectrum is being reassigned to other uses such as cell phones and emergency communications. There is only so much broadcast space and digital uses less of it.

Tax payers not paying: Bull squeeze. The govt is auctioning off the spectrum. The govt is us. The profit is ours and should be used for legitimate govt business not paying for other peoples luxuries. Did the govt buy televisions for america when radio entertainment was replaced by tv?

For the Poor: More squeeze. What is the average lifespan of a tv? Let's be generous and say it is 15 years. So the huge majority of TV's today have been manufactured since 1993 meaning they are already digital and not in need of a converter box. Think of the commercial about the conversion that says "most tv's will work fine but what about that one on the basement or the kitchen or the guest room?"

Why should I pay for some clown to have an EXTRA TV in their spare bedroom. If they have enough house to have a spare bedroom they can buy their own damn box.

1.6 billion buys 26.6 million converter boxes @ $60 a pop. Assuming TV is a neccessity do you really believe that 25% of households in America only have one non-digital television and are too poor to afford to buy their own?

Give Analog To Conservative TV
If conservative talk radio saved the AM band then let’s give the analog to conservative television.

Neal Boortz on the subject (part one)
Of all liberal arguments for government control, this is perhaps one of the easiest to destroy.

Since the era of mass communications despots have realized that one of the keys to absolute power was control of the means of communication. Our founding fathers didn't do today's politicians any favors with the First Amendment. There is really nothing the power-hungry political class can do about newspapers because of that troublesome little guarantee of "freedom of the press." Clearly our framers intended for a prohibition of any control over the means of communication. Back then there were only two means of communication .. writing and the spoken word. Both were covered in the First Amendment.

Later came broadcasting .. and with broadcasting came the realization that a new means of mass communication was coming; a means of mass communication not specifically referenced in the Constitution. So .. time to exert some control. But wait! You need an excuse! Well, let's try this. We'll develop this concept of "the public's airwaves" and use that concept to legitimize government control.

Neal Boortz on the subject (part two)
Public's airwaves? What does that mean? Just what is it the public owns here? Does the public own the electromagnetic waves that travel through space at close to the speed of sound? Why? Did the public pay to produce those electromagnetic waves? Find me the budget item for "procurement and propagation of electromagnetic waves" in any appropriations bill. Light is also an electromagnetic wave, and light also comes to us through the airways. Where's the government department that controls light? When you speak you produce sound waves that travel through the public's airwaves. Where's the government department that regulates your conversation? Oh, wait .. that First Amendment problem again. But there are universities with speech codes ... so there's hope.

Politicians like to use the excuse of "scarcity" to regulate broadcast frequencies. Scarcity? In Atlanta there is one newspaper, but 30 radio stations. The broadcast spectrum could handle dozens more. Where's the scarcity? If there's a scarcity it's in newspapers. Maybe that's where the regulations ought to go .. .but, again, there's that pesky First Amendment.

While it's hard to make any sensible excuse for this "public's airwaves" nonsense, our roads and highways are another matter. Clearly the roads and highways are paid for by the people .. by all of us. Clearly a case can be made for public ownership of the roads and highways. And just guess how your newspaper gets to you every day. That's right, over the public's roads and highways. Same for the U.S. Mail, magazines ... pretty much everything you have in your home. Everything, that is, except for the sounds and pictures that come over your radios and televisions.

On Target, Yet Also Missed
There is no reason taxpayers should be buying converter boxes for those who can't/won't pay for one on their own.

There is also no reason the government should be focing the switch from analog to digital.

The author is right to be upset about the final result, but should direct as much or even more disgust at the starting point as he directs at the result. The broadcasters should be free to broadcast exclusively digital, exclusively analog or both as they see fit.

MESSIAH ECONOMICS 101
What I gathered from Obama's speech last night was this:

OBAMANOMICS=ECONOMIC SALVATION

And his speech was a lesson in Messiah Economics 101, the first sermon in a series of divine revelations on economic salvation and hope.

The best thing we can do
is turn off the "idiot box" as my father used to call it. It certainly has turned into that. We should be forming grass roots meetings in every small town in this country and brainstorm how to overthrow this administration. I used to wonder how Hitler got into power in the first place. Now I know.

You think you're outraged now?
Just wait.

http://www.turnoffyourtv.com/international/bbc.html

Death & Murder
Except for braindead Liberal Democrat Obamaniacs the slow, agonizing death of TV is exceeded only by the more rapid demise of print media. Talk radio and the Internet are our only hope, and the LDOs are going after those to suppress freedom of speech, certainly freedom of Conservatives speaking or writing.

$40 cost of box
Is anyone surprised that the cheapest converter box is $40?
When the government announced that they were going to pay $40 of the cost of the converter box, where was the incentive for a manufacturer to develop a $10 converter box?

To: $40 cost of box
Here in Jacksonville FL, the cheapest converter boxes I have found retail at 59 dollars plus tax if you can find them avaliable. I would suspect the 'real' retail price is 19 dollars plus 40 dollars mark up since the gov't took away market pressures to competitively price them.

Of course those who bought the bands, are going to use them to charge the taxpayers billions, so the citizen will pay for this in the long run, but in the meantime … … … .

I would much rather get rid of all the phones and other junk that comes over the airwaves, then get rid of TV.

sdf
But you're alright with his entire enterprise which is based on a lie?

"the government is us"
Mike, I disagree that most people would believe that anymore. We have lost control over our government a long time ago. However, this is wasteful, more pork. Our children and grandchildren are really the ones paying for all this nonsense.

hail to the chief
Please pass the fried chicken

liberals can't read?
"we must have tv, even if the taxpayers are forced to pay for it, because tv is absolutely essential to the daily updating of orthodox liberals on who they should hate today. the poor dears cant read..."

I thought liberals were over educated elites? That would imply we can read. So which is it?

subsidizing converter boxes
This is nothing less than a bailout of the networks and big media. I unplugged my TV two years ago and haven't regretted a day, except for maybe missing the Super Bowl. Unbelievable the crud that is on TV now.

Truetolife
"We should be forming grass roots meetings in every small town in this country and brainstorm how to overthrow this administration."

Why do you hate democracy so much?

Liberals Can't Read?
Libs can read, they just want to force the rest of us to read what they tell us. My guess is that most liberals fear the no-TV trend, which disconnects the unwashed masses from their reach. Any other good explanation for this government program?

The community organizer at his best
If Bush would of made that idiotic comment about profits, letterbrainless and the corrupted mass media would of been all over it. the great hyped one is a communist at heart. Word is he wants to sign an executive community organizer order making all buinesses "non-profit," the favorite game of the community organizers.

the great hyped one is suppose to be a constitutional lawyer, what a joke ! is like making madoff the head of ethics for investing !

there is so much radical leftist agendas and wasteful spending coming out of Washington, the coverter boxes are nothing !

the voting block of the great hyped one was 15% the radical left not the majority, that was the confused. So why is he catering to the radicals ? Becasue he is a radical himself not a moderate as he lied to the fools about, A RADICAL LEFTIST BUYING HIS TIME !

The congress with the lowest approval rating and from the bankrupt red states is running this country ?????

community starts at home, take care of your own responsibilities so that you don't have to impose on others and burden the community, including your child bearing !

stim u less
how do you boil a frog?...put him in a pot and turn the heat up high, he jumps out!!...put him in a pot of nice warm water he gets lazy and happy, then turn the flame up bit by bit...we are all a bunch of lazy frog....

Charleen
I hope you are wrong, but I think you are right. We are being gently stewed.

no tv
just moved to country where there is no cable and satallite is expensive...I hate the major network drive-by mess that got b/o elected...I use the internet where I can "pick" my news station...I spend very little time in front of a screen and none watching the dribble that is on tv now days...I grew up in the 50ies when there was some entertainment...throw the tv out...

meetings
I agree with trutolife...

ca
states: Why do you hate democracy so much?

I love my Republic.

Please define "poor"
All this talk about this program and so many others being "for the poor." Whenever I hear of this kind of nonsense, I always think what it would be like to bring someone here from, oh, let's say, Zimbabwe. Somebody from the lowest income class there. Somebody poor. And tell them that our government supplies 2 converter boxes per household, so that OUR "poor" people can watch tv for free. Oh, don't forget, these same "poor" people didn't have to pay for those tv's, the government did that through welfare. Not to mention the house the tv's are inside of, the electricity to run them, and the Cheetos to eat while watching them. I like to imagine the look on the face of the poor person from Zimbabwe. And no, we shouldn't let that person immigrate here to participate in all the freebies.

digital tv
What pisses me off is that GWBush ordered the transition to digital tv 5 years ago to be completed 2/17/09. In 5 years, 6.5 million idiots couldn't find the time to get a converter box? Now the morons that we elected to represent us extend the deadline to June. I guarantee you that in June, there will still be millions of idiots without converters. When they realize that they can't watch the boob toob, that's when they will get off their tushies and become responsible for their own needs and wants.

Lets all thank our neighbors......
yes...our neighbors who had so little idea of
the power struggle in Washington, voted to allow complete and utter power to be handed over to leftwing radicals, Obama being the lead
of the leftist pack with Nancy Pelosi's name
tattooed on every single Democratic butt of those we call our "leaders" in Congress and the Senate. GOOD JOB, FOLKS. If we're lucky,
there will actually still be something left of America that we can salvage in four years...

Collins, Specter & Snowe just SOLD OUT..

BREAKING NEWS:

Senators Collins, Specter & Snowe just sold the United States out. Calling them "RINOs" is an insult to RINOs.

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D966EEQ80&show_arti cle=1

WASHINGTON (AP) - With job losses soaring nationwide, Senate Democrats reached agreement with KEY REPUBLICANS Friday night on an economic stimulus measure at the heart of President Barack Obama's plan for combatting the worst recession in decades. "The American people want us to work together. They don't want to see us dividing along partisan lines on the most serious crisis confronting our country," said SEN. SUSAN COLLINS of Maine, one of two GOP senators who signaled support for the bill.

Officials put the cost of the measure at $780 billion in tax cuts and new spending combined. No details were immediately available, and there appeared to be some confusion even among senators about the price tag as floor debate continued late into the night.

The agreement capped a tense day of backroom negotiations in which Senate Majority Leader HARRY REID, joined by White House chief of staff RAHM EMANUEL, sought to attract the support of enough Republicans to give the measure the needed 60-vote majority.

In addition to COLLINS, Sen. ARLEN SPECTER, R-Pa., said he would vote for the bill. Sen. OLYMPIA SNOWE, R-Maine, remained uncommitted." (cap emphasis mine)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks to these three SELL-OUTS (Collins, Specter and Snowe), a few years from now, our country will be forced to default on its debt obligations.
That’ll be after hyper-inflation has destroyed the value of our currency.
These 3 Traitors have enabled the Leftocrats to BORROW nearly a TRILLION DOLLARS, and flush it down the toilet on wasteful pet pork projects.
A trillion dollars.
That’s 1,000,000,000,000.00
If any of these three American Traitors (Senators Collins, Specter and Snowe) happen to be YOUR Senator, please, FIRE THEM.
Why I hate democracy
Our founders rejected democracy and formed a republic in Article 4, Section 4. Democracy allows a group to buy and steal 50.01% of the votes and then force other people's stuff into their pockets and/or force everyone to march in lockstep with their vision of America.
God save our republic. The 5-4 DC Supremes never will.
Scott
"If any of these three American Traitors (Senators Collins, Specter and Snowe) happen to be YOUR Senator, please, FIRE THEM."
Scott,
We can't; believe me, we've tried. The system is rigged.
Amendments 9 and 10
There absolutely is something we can do about the unconstitutional (illegal) government confiscation of the airways even though the Bill of Rights specifically mentions only speech and press. Our Founders did not anticipate radio and TV, but they did anticipate that they would overlook something and made adequate plans for every eventuality.
Now, the hard part. Just try to get the 5-4 DC Supremes to honor their oaths to protect and defend our not-a-living-document Constitution with more regularity than they protect and defend the erroneous decisions of dead judges (precedents).
Government funds
Back in the late 40's and early 50's there was a vote to accept or reject government aid to South Carolina Schools. My father (who only had a 7th grade education voted NO!) When I asked him why, he said, "If you accept government money, they they can tell you what to do". He was a lot smarter than most. Converter boxes, being a government subsidized thing, makes one wonder what the catch will be when the government decides to tell you what you can do with it.
Capping Katie Couric's salary
During the last election cycle, politicians spent over a billion dollars for jobs worth a fraction of that amount. The largest cost is the TV media. In order to run an effective campaign, a politician has to have his/her hand out to pay for media time. Because of the costs, they do not turn down contributions from questionable sources, and corrupt themselves as a result.
My solution, cap the salaries of the broadcast media. Katie Couric is paid 15 million to read the news. In reality, that job is worth, at most, $85,000, maybe a little more if you have to commute to an expensive city. By capping their salaries, the cost for politicians to run ads would decrease, and maybe Senator Dole would not have to take tobacco money, which ultimately ended in Katie Couric's pocket!
Obamanation or abomination?
Liars, cheats & idiots
When I borrow money, I know the terms. They are misleading us that the cost is 800 billion. They have to borrow the money. Who are they borrowing from? What is the rate? How long will we be paying it off? How does it cut into the "discretionary" budget? How many generations will be burdened by this debt?
When you get a construction loan, money is not released until certain conditions are met. The idiots in Congress didn't even think to put that in the TARP legislation, or the current Obamanation. They are either complete idiots, or they need to destroy this country in order to remake it consistent with their socialistic, tyrannical ideals.
Why can't our generation sacrifice now to save future generations from our mistakes?
Bunny (the ears) v. Muffy (the deal)
Mr. Gallagher,
You get the picture; you just don't like the image.
Analog is Annette Funicello; digital is Miley Cyrus. Uncle Sam is Big Daddy.
Public airways get sold to government and commercial interests, but Big Daddy, wants all the kids in the neighborhood to like the switch. We didn't get a vote, so we get a discount coupon on a new toy.
The hitch is that the deal sets limits: so many coupons, so little time before they run out or expire. Oops. Some kids tantrum. Big Daddy prints more funny money to make more coupons so the kids don't have to spend their own allowance.
This would be a bad fairytale, if it weren't such a bad idea.
Obama and Digital TV
One factual error needs addressing. Obama didn't start this plan. President Bush signed this switch into law in 2006.
