Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I’ve never gone from sadness to rage in such a short period of time than this week when I watched a pandering, vile Democrat blame global warming for the rash of tornadoes that struck the South.

When over 50 people are killed by a horrible storm that spawned countless twisters, who could expect that anyone would be brazen and ugly enough to politicize this natural disaster?

John Kerry reporting for duty.

I love Tennessee. The state is beautiful and the people are warm and gracious. When I first heard about the killer storm, my heart went out to those good and decent folks.

But then I made the mistake of turning on the television and watching Sen. John Kerry give his best scientific explanation of the cause of these multiple tornadoes. I realize that when he ran for president he couldn’t stop telling us what a fabled war hero he was, but I must have missed the part about his meteorology degree.

Before any of the bodies in the south were even buried, here’s what this Senate scoundrel had to say about this weeks devastation: “[I] don’t want to sort of leap into the larger meaning of, you know, inappropriately, but on the other hand, the weather service has told us we are going to have more and more intense storms,” Kerry said. “And insurance companies are beginning to look at this issue and understand this is related to the intensity of storms that is related to the warming of the earth. And so it goes to global warming and larger issues that we’re not paying attention to. The fact is the hurricanes are more intensive, the storms are more intensive and the rainfall is more intense at certain places at certain times and the weather patterns have changed.”

What a ghoul.

The obsession that liberals have with global warming has gotten so out of hand that they sound like a bunch of mental patients in an asylum.

Consider for a moment what a clever strategy this is: it’s too cold outside, must be global warming. Too hot? Global warming. Hurricanes? Tornadoes? Floods? Global warming all.

It really is enough to make you heave.

Do you think we’ve ever had killer tornadoes touch down before, Sen. Kerry? According to the Associated Press, this was the worst storm of its kind in 23 years. So what happened 24 years ago? You think us fat cat Republicans driving around in our SUV’s spawned tornadoes in 1984?

It’s one thing to spout off about “the planet in peril” (thanks, CNN) or “the earth suffering from a fever” (classic Al Gore). But to hurt the grieving families of Tennessee and the other states impacted by somehow equating their loss with a man-made inspired weather condition is simply grotesque.

One can line up scientist after scientist who will happily refute “Dr.” Kerry’s assertion that global warming created the storms this week. But that doesn’t stop this crowd. They don’t let any facts get in the way of their rant.

They have the rich movie stars, hopping aboard their fuel-guzzling private jets, lecturing us on how many squares of toilet paper we can use in order to “save the planet.” They have the idiots at NBC deciding to seat their football sportscasters in the dark in order to brag that by saving electricity by not using studio lights, they are somehow “saving the planet” (I will NEVER forget an obviously annoyed Tikki Barber mumbling on-air about hoping the lights are back next week so viewers could actually see him).

In other words, these lunatics are out of control.

I’ve got a couple of recommendations for John “Mr. Weather Channel” Kerry: try to maintain some degree of decency and respect for the dead. Don’t play politics over the funerals of tornado victims.

And most of all, go back to what you’re good at: attempting to be relevant – but failing miserably.

end of mysticism
Mike Gallagher your ire is as insincere and politicized a Kerrie's. Whether global worming is "man made" or not is still up for debate, but "Global worming" i.e (climate change) is real. Even the most skeptical conservative scientists attest that fact.

The difference between conservatives and non conservatives is how they look at the world.

Conservatives see the world as beyond human control. They see the world as mystical and they couch solutions in the language of mysticism.

Everyone else sees the world as mechanistic and controllable. They see the world as a place in which human action and inaction can play a vital part in determining outcomes.

The evidence seems to support the latter view more than the former, but let us say for arguments sake that we did not have enough evidence to determine which view was correct...

On a purely philosophical basis the second view is superior than the first, because if the world is mystical and humans have no control, then they will not gain control regardless of what they do, but if the world is controllable, then only threw assuming that it is will humans motivated to attempt to shape their environment.

Science has killed conservatism as a rational philosophical stance, only the emotional desire to no be responsible for ones actions and inactions breaths life into the conservative movement.

One Volcano
I believe in Global Warming. I also believe the actual climatologists and vulcanologists (no Uber, these aren't Spocks brethren) that state that one minor volcano creates more "greenhouse gasses" than all gasses created by humans. Seems we've got to start plugging the damn volcanos.

Kerry on the Gore-Bull Bandwagon
Mike Gallagher quotes Kerry as blathering: "And so it goes to global warming and larger issues that we’re not paying attention to. The fact is the hurricanes are more intensive, the storms are more intensive and the rainfall is more intense at certain places at certain times and the weather patterns have changed.”
**********************************************

First of all, WHO is not paying attention to Gore-Bull Warming?!!! Every time I turn around, I hear some Leftie flapping their tofu hole about it till I am ready to hurl.

Next, Kerry proves the genius of the Left, who have managed to censor REAL history out of the classroom in favor of stories about insignificant people who are mentioned for inventing the left-handed onion peeler, famous only because they are minorities.

Because of this, people have generally never heard of the Galveston Flood of 1900, for example, where the death toll has been set between 6,000 and 12,000 (due to less accurate census methods of the time). Some set the death toll at 8,000, which was about 20% of the population of the city at the time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galveston_Hurricane_of_1900

The worst hurricane that we know of took place in 1780, in the Carribeans, in which 22,000 people died:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Hurricane_of_1780

In fact, Hurricane Katrina did not make it to the list of the top 10 deadliest hurricanes.

The Gore-Bull Warmies nevertheless continue to claim that storms are getting worse: this in spite of the fact that at least two years in a row the shills that have taken over the weather industry were wrong about their projected number of bad storms.

sandcrab
If only we could direct the heat and pressure buildup from plugging the volcanoes to say ....John Kerry's house.

uber
Let us know when you and your friends in the "everyone else" crowd can come up with a machine to "control" the weather. These midwest winters are a pain sometimes and would like Hawaii weather year round.

Also could you send a couple of tornadoes to John Kerry's neighborhood, just for kicks.

The deadliest Atlantic Hurricanes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deadliest_Atlantic_hur ricanes

If anyone wanted to do a reality check about compulsive liar John Kerry's claim that storms are getting worse, all they have to do is look at Wikipedia and see that he is full of Bull: Gore-Bull Warming Bull.

In a list of the 43 recorded hurricanes since the year 1590 that killed 1,000 or more people, ONLY TWO HAVE OCCURRED SINCE THE YEAR 2000!!!

Hurricane Katrina comes in at number 28 on the list, and the other big 21st Century storm, Hurricane Jeanne, came in 12th on the list.

5 Deadly Hurricanes took place in the 17th Century, 11 deadly Atlantic Cyclonic storms took place in the 18th Century, 5 deadly hurricanes took place in the 19th Century, 12 bad storms took place in the 20th Century.

You will never see these facts in any speech by the Gore-Bullies, who want to ram this lie down our throats.

Lefties never like the truth to spoil a good story.

John Kweery, Storm Chaser
This guy proves every time he speaks what a follower and not a leader he is.

We've had crazy weather patterns for the 40 years I've been around and when you hear about real history, not that made up liberal history, well guess what, crazy weather has existed for a heck of a lot longer than me.

Libs always jump on the GloBull Warming bus when they can't explain changes in climate, instead it has to become dire and of course Americas fault. I like to call it Environmental Socialism.

KL- what does pointing out 2 RINOs who believe in GW? Wow you really hit us good with that. Unlike you, conservatives don't tow the party line. Why don't you let real scientists sort this one out. Politicians have no business predicting weather.

Playing Politics w/Tragedy is Kerry's

thing... Actually, it's a liberal thing, isn't it?

But, kerry's stupid little gloBULL warming statement has already been refuted...

NON ISSUE, as usual!

Global Warming
Criticizing Kerry for helping people to realize how dangerous Global Warming is really the disgusting thing. The whole world, except segments of the far right wing, knows GW is a pretty well known fact.

Surrendering Reason
Politicians on both sides are two quick to look at a single weather pattern in a single region and throw out something about how it demonstrates---or fails to demonstrate--- climate change. Global-warming science is about long-term trends, but for the vast majority of the specialists most qualified to speak about those trends, the patterns are clear and the implications are serious. Galllagher says, "The obsession that liberals have with global warming has gotten so out of hand that they sound like a bunch of mental patients in an asylum." Given that the weight of the science is very much on the side of those liberals, I would suggest that asylum status belongs to the people who work overtime to explain it all away. That's what happens when people surrender their reason to a flawed ideology.

God did it cause he's mad
Fluctuating weather patterns are not our concern. They are beyond our pathetic attempts to understand and predict. These severe storms and heat waves are God's wrath on evil and wicked liberals who cause everything bad to happen.

Irrelevance is in the eye of the Beholder. John Kerry may be redundant in blaming global warming for the rash of tornadoes. Ignoring Global warming by saying it is not happening makes you a slave to ignorance and superstition.

I'll take redundancy to stupidity Mike.

Global Warming = Job's...
...for the Left.

There is a lot of money in being on the "for" side of the global warming controversy. Federal and private foundation grants, media attention for books and films (propaganda). I remember well the "Coming Ice Age" scare back in the late 70's, it was all nothing but more of the same. Books, Paul Ehrlich's TV interviews, "nuclear winters". All of Mencken's "Bogus Revelation", that the American public has an appetite for and that the proponents use to seek their fame and fortune. Congress needs to eliminate the 501(3)(c) provision of the tax code and these unproven theories will remain in the laboratory where they belong.

This blogger, Mike Gallagher writes:
"The obsession that liberals have with global warming has gotten so out of hand...."

Newsflash, cons: You have just nominated a presidential candidate that has publicly said man-made global warming is an "urgent" matter (McCain's word). McCain has worked with Arnold Schwarzenegger on legislation curbing CO2 emissions. ALL the presidential candidates believe man-made GW is "real".

This "issue" is not going to be part of the coming debate. All presidential candidates are in agreement (just as immigration is off the table: all presidential candidates are in agreement).

Bucko
But what of the other side of the coin? The AEI puts out a lot of anti GW literature and is heavily financed by the oil companies. In fact, its hard to find an anti-GW scientists who isn't in their pay.

only a fool
would come to the conclusion that climate changes are only unique to this particular point in time. What produced the big and little ice ages? How does the Sun affect climate? What role does our moon play on tides, and how does it affect cloud formation? When the fear-mongering, eco-terrorists come up with answers to those questions with empirical evidence, then, I may listen. At this point, it's just about manipulation of data to acheive a desired result. Just like the manipulation that President Bush was accused of as justification for invading Iraq. It's a power grab, plain and simple.

Uber
Thanks for a good post.

Your sentence, "The difference between conservatives and non conservatives is how they look at the world.' might have actually read

"The difference between conservatives and non conservatives is how they look TO the world."

People like Mountain Rose, TH regulars and 20th century conservatives will be denying climate change until their last blade of grass is either dead or washed away. They will continue to think of science and scientists as the anti-Christ, out to drive our souls to hell.

These attacks on gore and GW have become funny, similar to other conservatives beliefs that the 1966 moon landing actually happened on a movie back lot in Culver City, that Hillary Clinton is devil spawn, that Iraq commandeered the bombing of the WTC and that Kennedy was murdered by a posse of cubans (or Johnson Democrats, or Russians, or Gays).

Kerry's BS
If John Kerry really believed that mankind is responsible for global warming, he wouldn't be opposing alternative, clean energy sources. But he does. At least when they affect his favorite windsurfing location.

Just like Al Gore, who preaches energy efficiency from his energy guzzling mansion, John Kerry believes that all sacrifices must be made by someone else, not by him.

He's a liar and a hypocrite.

justpaul: I can't believe that ANYONE

is still actually buying into that gloBULL warming scam!

Unbelievable!!!

Bravo Mike!
It's high time we stopped suffering these alarmist fools so lightly.

Let's face it: the whole global warming hysteria is about labelling human beings as "parasites," which paves the way for justifying "population control" as a way to "heal the Earth." It's only a short step from there to the eugenicist policies employed in Nazi Germany and still being employed against Christian populations in several parts of the world, not to mention the atrocities committed by the Communist Chinese government against families that dare have more than one child without government permission.

I Should have also said
'They (conservatives)will continue to think of science and scientists as the anti-Christ, out to drive our souls to hell"

and if they are everable to achieve their Religious Utopian Government, they will be true to history and see that scientists, teachers, and intellectuals will be the first to be packed on the trains and sent to the camps.

Taft's: "The "Other Side of the Coin"

The AEI? You mean the American Enterprise Institute, to be precise. So what! Do you want to censor all free inquiry and opposition to theories not yet proven? If I remember, correctly, the American left was very enamored with "Eugenics" at the early part of the 20th. Century and by the 1940's this theory had gotten completely out of control. One can still find it's proponents in both the left and other extreme political movements still extant.

At the moment, there is a lot of money to be made in political movements. Gun Control alone goes through a minimum of $20,000,000 a year and employs over 100 persons in paid "Executive Director" positions. The mentally ill barley receive $10m in 501(3)(c) funding and most of their labor is volunteer.

So no, I don't have a problem with the AEI being funded by Exxon, as long as the Rockefeller Foundation funds Global Warming political action. What's the matter, can't you lefties compete freely in the market place of ideas or are you afraid of the public finding out that you're nothing but grifters? Oh well, I suppose it's better than you lefty's being on welfare. (or is it?)

Andfall
I don't think cons have a big problem with being totally against something and voting for someone who is totally in favor of that same thing. It's called cognitive dissonance, and it's the conservative raison d'etre.

That's what makes TH so much fun.

let's see...
Conservative Artist: So the nominee a majority of Republicans voted for twice is a RINO because he believes in global warming. The guy a majority of Republicans now support for the nominee is also a RINO because he believes in global warming. So does his closest opponent. Do you see anything wrong with your definition of a RINO?

Kerry's comments were perfectly measured and appropriate. The criticisms all sound strange from a crowd that tries to convince us the Muslims will kill us all if we don't give every dime to the military.

I don't deny climates change
I contend that science has a very limited knowledge of climate and climate change. There are several factors that are known, some, not so much, yet, drastic measures are to be implemented on the basis of incomplete data. Just because some(former)politician says it's so, doesn't it make it so.

Christianity against Global Warming
I'm firmly convinced that the conservatives' view of Christianity is behind their opposition to global warming. Conservative Christians believe that God plays a major roll in the profane history of human beings on planet earth; and while the end of history may be as bloody as the present history is, they still believe that God exercises a begnine (sp?) influence on our history.

The problem with global warming for conservative Christians is that the theory comes from the same secular scientific method as does the theory of evolution. For conservatives to buy into global warming it would open the door to considering the science behind evolution.

While conservative Christians may not even be aware of this sub-rosa issue, I think that is the reason they oppose the scientific research on global warming.

Look
The problem is this: the left says the debate is over, when clearly it's not.

I like jimmyjames stance - too much is unknown so to start implementing major changes and drastic measure when we have no idea if we are completely right seems absolutely ludicrous.

The debate needs to remain open so that we can continue discussion about what's going on, confirm as best we can where the global warming is coming from and, if is man-made, try to think of ways to combat it without turning our society back thousands of years where we are living in caves.

I take the moderate approach on this one because extremists on both sides have reasons for pushing their point of view. I want to hear from scientists that are as neutral as you can get.

Then we can talk. Otherwise, it's completely pointless.

Bucko
"If I remember, correctly, the American left was very enamored with "Eugenics" at the early part of the 20th."

This topic is very interesting to me and I got a book I have by a expert on the subject, Stephen Jay Gould. In 1924 Virginia passed the compulsory sterilization law and Carrie Buck was it's most infamous victim. True, conservative Christians defended her, but eugenic's "most vocal critics were members on the left." The Flamingoes Smile

"So no, I don't have a problem with the AEI being funded by Exxon, as long as the Rockefeller Foundation funds Global Warming political action. What's the matter, can't you lefties compete freely in the market place of ideas or are you afraid of the public finding out that you're nothing but grifters? Oh well, I suppose it's better than you lefty's being on welfare. (or is it?)"

Well, Bucko, I haven't a problem if what they are selling is true. And, honestly, your side trust Exon over thousands of scientists? Right.

News Flash...
Politicians pander for votes. Less informed voters are swallowing up baseless allegations hook, line, and sinker. It's the Economy, no, it's Iraq, no, it's global warming/cooling, no, it's Education, no, it's poverty, no, it's...

What global warming?
Average global temperature hasn't increased since 1998. Only the hot air of those who have figured out how to profit financially or politically from the "crisis."

The new catch words are "global climate change." That way they can keep sucking the government teat no matter what happens, since the climate is always changing.

Michael Crichton predicted this change in terminology in his novel "State of Fear." His global warming activists realized that there was no more warming, but still needed a crisis to keep their cash cow alive.

Crichton's main point, however, was that whatever crisis is being pushed the object was to create a constant state of fear. This state of fear is used to gain and retain political power.

Especially read his Appendix I: Why Politicized Science is Dangerous. He cites a real world crisis of a century ago which was supported by Thoedore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Alexander Graham Bell and many others. Research was backed by Carnegie and Rockefeller Foundations. Legislation to address the crisis was passed from New York to California. Those who opposed the theory were shouted down and called reactionary, blind to reality, or just plain ignorant.

The junk science of eugenics postulated a crisis in the gene pool leading to the deterioration of the human race. Millions died as a result.

History repeats.

oneeye
"The new catch words are "global climate change." That way they can keep sucking the government teat no matter what happens, since the climate is always changing."

How do you explain why all the other Western countries are on the GW bandwagon? The most free democratic countries in Scandinavia are on the wagon for example.

solutions to Global Warming/Cooling
have unintended consequences: production of batteries produce very harmful chemicals and chemical reactions once exposed to the enviroment, the mercury content of flourescent bulbs is a well known carcinagen, ethanol production is very inefficient in terms of fuel produced versus fuel used, most carbon credits are produced by non-polluting industries not the polluting industries. Nuclear power is the obvious solution proven by science to be non-polluting and safe, yet, that is not deemed to be a solution in this country. All we're doing at this point is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Sounds like a typical Liberal solution!

western bondbeam: we already did
"Let us know when you and your friends in the "everyone else" crowd can come up with a machine to "control" the weather. These midwest winters are a pain sometimes and would like Hawaii weather year round."

Luckily for you this machine has been available for some time. It's called a house with climate control.

You can even plant trees, dump sand on the flour, put in a pool populate it with tropical fish. Anything your heart desires if you have enough money that is.

For that matter you can have Hawaii and Alaska in two different rooms.

uber
This is funny. I feel almost the same about (modern) liberals. Their world seems to be comprised of two paradoxical strains. An almost ancestral mysticism toward the world and an indignant, intransigent, militance towards people deemed "untouchable." I see conservatism as rational, pragmatic and wise with an appreciation of the world as it is, and as a
philosophical basis with which to change it into a better place.

Global warming may indeed be real, even man-influenced (although, no, Dorothy, there is no consensus on this) and still be deeply political, manifesting both the liberal attributes specified above. Indeed, current environmental politics display them almost daily in very stark terms.

Were the environmental manifestos so in vogue today informed by a respect for freedom and an understanding of economics there might be some common ground on which to construct, or at least comprehend solutions. It is simply an unassailable fact that the duo of liberal democracy coupled with capitalism has created the overflowing abundance of the modern world, and is the only proven paradigm to sustainably disabling poverty. Our leaders tinker with this system at everyones peril.

That being the case, any real environmental solutions must either harness this fundamental agent of change or vanquish whole populations to unending physical privation, or at best provide some mixture of the two. Until such tradeoffs are embraced and recognized as *the* fundamental question there can be no confidence that the GW crowd is acting in any way save reactionary and dogmatic.

So. Mr. Gallagher may be forgiven his skepticism as so many of us look with a jaundiced eye at these predictions of imminent disaster, especially when they issue from the necessarily polarized mouth of any politician.

Thanks Kerry
First off I was shocked that he didnt blame the President like they did when Katrina took out the Slums of N.O.

Globull Warming might be true but to state that HUMANS are the sole reason for it is what I dont underestand about LIBS.

Soon you want be able to have barbeques, they are going to take away your Heat for housing. Your swimming pools will have to go because people use heat to warm them. Maybe Nancy P can come up with aanother 100 day program to get rid of the SUN. Can you see LIBS wanting to build a shield around the Earth. Wait maybe all thbose Hurricanes that they have been predicting and making the American people spend money that they dont have on condiments to hold them obver when there is suppose to be 12 Major Hurricane blasting this country.

What a Joke

Next they will want Americans to quit having SEX because of body heat may contribute to GLOBULL WARMING.

Taft
"How do you explain why all the other Western countries are on the GW bandwagon? The most free democratic countries in Scandinavia are on the wagon for example."

The reason those Western countries are on the GW wagan is because they know that America will always take care of them.

Who Pays for it

GLOBULL WARMING-----AMERICA
GLOBULL AIDES ------AMERICA
GLOBULL TERROIST----AMERICA
GLOBULL UN CORRUPTION--AMERICA
GLOBULL DISATERS(SUNAMIS,HURRICANES,TORNADOS)
AMERICA AMERICA AMERICA.
Why wouldnt any other Western country back all this. Because they know in the long run that America Government will step to the front and pay foor it.

Its funny to watch LIBS on Capital Hill screaming that other countries hate the U.S but when they get in trouble who do they call

AMERICA,AMERICA AMERICA. Boy that sure sounds like to me they hate us.

Again, and again, and again
The liberals accuse the conservatives of not thinking for themselves, yet we get arguments like this from them:

“Bush beleives in climate change(global warming)”

“These are the top two Republicans out there right now and they seem to believe its happening.”

“Too bad your own candidates don't seem to know that. Telling me that does nothing for your pro-global warming REPUBLICANS.”

“Newsflash, cons: You have just nominated a presidential candidate that has publicly said man-made global warming is an "urgent" matter (McCain's word). McCain has worked with Arnold Schwarzenegger on legislation curbing CO2 emissions. ALL the presidential candidates believe man-made GW is "real".”

Well, I guess if our political leaders believe it, it must be so! That’s why we elect them, right, because they are smarter and better than us? Because they know how, with what and when we can wipe our behinds? That’s why liberals are about to elect the “smartest woman on earth!” The woman who didn’t know what her husband was doing in their house until the national media told her! The woman who didn’t know that those files were in her rooms!

western bondbeam
Yes they were... Not all technology is created equal... You get what you pay for and what your smart enough to buy.

Mountain Rose
On your list of deadliest hurricanes, did the Katrina stats include the deaths from flooding which occurred due to a faulty levee, or did it separate those. I’ll bet that if you don’t include those deaths, the Katrina was no where near the top!

Any way, speaking of science being ignored, did you happen to see this?
http://ibdeditorial.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=287279412587175

That da*n sun is doing it again. We humans can control that, if we just put our minds to it, and quit driving so many SUVs and burning penguin blubber!

Environmentalism is the opiate
of the liberals. It's about as simple as that.

No known link to global warming
There is no known scientific link between the recent tornadoes and global warming (AKA "Climate Change").

We are experience a la Nina current in the Pacific. The tornadoes and other strong storms are associated with la Nina. There is no known link between climate change and la Nina.

Kerry's speech was political grandstanding based on ignorance.

Global Warming Advocate
Quite frankly, I’m a Global Warming advocate! I would love to be able to put the Christmas turkey out on the grill without freezing my ornaments off. I would love to do away with the heater for good.

More people die from freezing every year then die from the heat. Save lives, increase global warming!

I have a solution for the rising oceans as well. Since less then 50% of the oil is currently pumped out of most oil wells before they are abandoned, we can pump sea water into the wells! Bingo! Oil rises to the top where its easier to get to, water is taken out of the ocean, and we get cheap gas!

uber
Somehow I doubt going with brick veneer vs vynal siding makes much difference to an F4 tornado. Sure an all concrete home may provice better protection but in the end, mother nature has no need to discriminate.

Tornados = weather; Climate = politics
It’s sad these two things have gotten confused.

Local weather caused the tornados. The damage is not unprecedented, and therefore not more extreme than in our recorded past. Whether climate change is the cause for THESE recent tornados cannot be proven--have existed throughout our recorded history--so blaming our actions/inaction for these tornados is simply wrong.

Until the climate change controversy is settled by clear science, it remains a political battle only. From my viewpoint, there are credible experts on both sides of the “who is causing global warming” controversy. Al Gore is not an expert, so I have to ignore his drum beating, hand wringing and exploitive showmanship.

Using these local tragedies for political gain is pitiful.

The symptom of mental illness
I live in Alaska and I work for community mental health. Right now, our community is suffering the worst cold snap we've experienced in a decade. For me, that's no big deal. I was born here and have been through many decadal weather cycles, so this is just what we expect and live with. I personally remember three cold snaps that were worse than this one (in the 80s one made world news).

Fact is, my liberal coworkers (social work attracts them) are all convinced this is an unusual occurence and a reason to panic about global climate change.

Climate changes. My grandfather fought the drought during the Depression, but his acreage is now some of the most productive in the nation. No drought currently. There's been heat waves and tornados and hurricanes for many generations. In the olden times our ancestors sacrificed to the weather gods hoping to control the climate. They were sure the gods heard them when things changed. Today, we want to sacrifice a standard of living and what some think is a high population in order to control the climate. Will the enviro-gods accept our sacrifice when we roll our living conditions back to Pre-Industrial Revolution levels and kill off a billion or so people? The climate will change and some of us will take credit for it, but the climate would have changed anyway because that's what it does and has been doing for a very long time. One wonders what the Vikings sacrificed as the ice closed around the Greenland colony?

Proud Liberal
“The problem with global warming for conservative Christians is that the theory comes from the same secular scientific method as does the theory of evolution. For conservatives to buy into global warming it would open the door to considering the science behind evolution.”

I’m a Conservative Christian and I don’t feel that way. But then again, you hate individuals, and see only groups. As an engineer I love scientific progress and technology. I think that evolution was a great idea put into place by God to allow his creatures to adapt and to prosper. I believe that God plays almost no role in the profane history of human beings on planet earth. I think He has adopted a hands off, libertarian approach to human life, to let us each make our own choices. If this were not so, anyone who denied him would be killed instantly, or taxed heavily.

In fact, why are you trying to Conserve the current state of the climate? Why won’t you let the climate Progress? Why do you feel the need to deny evolution? Why not let the earth evolve? Why not Liberate us all from the current situation? Change! The animals and humans will adapt. This is the way it is intended to be. For liberals to oppose climate change would open the door to considering the science behind evolution.

Taft
I agree with your 12:56 post, though we might not agree on how to achieve those things.

The biggest obstacle to U.S. energy independence is the so-called environmental movement. Their long-term goal is to reduce the energy consumption in the U.S. to that of a third world nation -- they call it conservation.

Yes, we should avoid wasting energy, but we will never use less energy tomorrow than we do today. We have to continue to develop new sources of energy.

Nuclear energy offers many advantages and has a better safety record than most energy industries. New nuclear technologies can greatly reduce the quantity and half-life of the waste produced and can even use existing waste and weapons material as fuel with the same benefits. (See Scientific American, Dec 2005.)

The U.S. has plenty of oil. The environmentalists have managed to place most of it off limits or increased the costs of development to make it economically unviable until the cost of crude goes higher. The U.S. has plenty of coal. The technologies exist to convert it into liquid fuels which could replace petroleum sources. The startup costs for this are so high that petroleum prices must stabilize at a higher level to make the risk worthwhile or the risk must be underwritten by the government.

Hybrid cars are a joke. The life-cycle pollution (with battery manufacture, etc.) is higher for a Prius than for a Hummer.

But I'm rambling. Bottom line is we could be energy independent if we could get the environmentalists to shut up (and if all the Ted Kennedys didn't oppose windmills in THEIR back yards).

"Next they will want Americans to quit having SEX because of body heat may contribute to GLOBULL WARMING."

Don't laugh, this is not far from what some of them want. I've read (don't remember where) about someone who calls for the eradication of the human race, or another who wants to tax babies because children contribute to global warming.

Other notes:

As for Bush and McCain, yes, they've been brainwashed into believing the hype, but just because I might settle on McCain doesn't mean I'll agree with him on it (or other issues).

"mother nature has no need to discriminate."

Needless to say you’re a conservative. "Mother nature..." This is what sets conservatives apart from enlightened society.

We don't believe that the earth is our mother or is alive or is a god or any other supernatural mumbo jumbo....

We believe in cause an effect. That causes are knowable and understandable, and that effects are there by controllable and preventable.

Mother nature has no need because mother nature has no free will. She doesn't act, because she doesn't exist as a meaningful entity with a will to do.

As Bill O'Reilly argued so persuasively against Richard Dawkins. "The sun goes up, the sun goes down." The point he was not making was that events happen, they have no purpose, no being wills them, no mind controls them, they have no ability to self actualize their wishes... They just happen...

But the consequence of their actions can be mitigated and even neutralized...

This is the basis of "global worming" debates in fact of all liberal vs. conservative debates.

It is the choice to live as victims of unknowable forces to whom our greatest difference is prayer, maybe even blood sacrifice

Or

It is a choice to live as victors over knowable forces to whom our best defense is engineering our environment to grantee our future existence.

Ron
Great link.

I've been convinced for some time that in my lifetime I would see more global cooling than warming.

We better get some more SUVs out there producing CO2 as quick as we can.

Global Cooling
The Earth is actually starting a cooling period, which will be much more of an issue than if it was warming. So what will the genius politicians prescribe for that? Mittens and a can of Sterno for everyone?

Also, would all of you global warming "climate experts" please list your credentials that allow you to make such statements?

Follow the money people. Follow the money.

uber
“But the consequence of their actions can be mitigated and even neutralized...

This is the basis of "global worming" debates in fact of all liberal vs. conservative debates.”

Wrong again! The basis of the liberal vs. conservative debates, as well as “global warming” debates is WHO or WHAT is responsible, and if there is a need to be “mitigated and even neutralized.”

Liberals want to neutralize, or otherwise neuter people, in favor of the actions of an all knowing government. Conservatives (not religious liberals) want to enable people to make the decisions and to take responsibility for themselves.

“It is the choice to live as victims of unknowable forces to whom our greatest difference is prayer, maybe even blood sacrifice”

And yet so many of your cohorts say the earth’s overpopulation is contributing to global warming. Will you denounce them? I will and have denounced many of Pat Robertson’s rants. Many more people die from freezing every year as opposed to being killed from the heat. How many more must you sacrifice before you embrace global warming?

CalVRWC
" Ethanol is a waste of time; we should be putting our energies (pun intended) toward hydrogen fuel cell technology."

Exactly right on the ethanol -- at least for corn based ethanol. It's a net energy loss by the time it's grown, processed, and transported. Nobody would be producing corn ethanol (for fuel) if not for the government subsidies.

Brazil has a vigorous ethanol economy using sugar cane as the raw material. The even build an ethanol-powered agricultural aircraft. They also have the advantage of a warmer climate which makes 100% ethanol cars more practical.

Hydrogen is not a source of energy, it's only a way of making energy (relatively) portable. First you have to produce the hydrogen, either from natural gas or some other chemical reaction or by disassociation of the hydrogen and oxygen in water. I'm not sure about the economics of the natural gas or chemical sources, but I do know that it takes more electricity to disassociate the water than you get back in the fuel cell. Hydrogen may be a more practical way to move electricity from the nuke power plant to the car than filling a car full of batteries and plugging it in to the wall, but the energy still has to be produced some other way first.

Redhead more like deadhead
"Liberals want to neutralize, or otherwise neuter people, in favor of the actions of an all knowing government. Conservatives (not religious liberals) want to enable people to make the decisions and to take responsibility for themselves."

Oh please Bush and Reagan have shown this hypothesis to be a lie.

Every time conservatives get into office they shove their values down everyone's thought by means of Government.

Look at the way Ron Paul is treated for suggesting that small government might be a good idea. That Homosexuals should be left alone to marry or not marry and that states not the federal government should decide issues of abortion and that children should have the right to cross state lines to have abortions.

Look how Ron Paul is treated on insisting that government ahs no part to play in monetary policy. Look how Ron Paul is treated for daring to say that the Executive does not have a universal right to do what ever he wants with or with out a congressional declaration of war.

Conservatives crucify anyone who dares attack their Big Government agenda.

How is Global Warming causing snow in Atlanta?

With all due respect I think you have your thoughts exactly backwards. From where I sit it is the modern liberal who for the most part wallows in a sea of mystical tribalism and conservatives, again for the most part, who espouse a rational and thoughtful approach to life.

To wit:

It is liberals who couch the world in the delusional and intellectually hostile framework of identity politics and "perspectives."

It is liberals who, contrary to pervasive and overwhelming evidence, epouse feel good economic policies such as minimum wage which harm most those they are intended to protect.

It is liberals who celebrate and nurture victimhood in their policies and proclamations, excusing every form of corrosive behavior as merely a consequence of some environmental oppression.

It is liberals who seemingly have the inability to comprehend that property rights are the basis from which all other rights descend, allowing them to tacitly support property destruction in the name of a chimerical environmental nirvana.

It is liberals whose religious dogma refuses to even consider nuclear power as an alternative energy, when it is by far the safest, cleanest and most effective option currently available.

I concede that there are individuals of all stripes who choose passion over reason, but I maintain that most of them find their political homes on the left end of the spectrum not the right.

uber
" And to argue that anyone, especially someone who can actually effect change, is "insensitive" for daring to say that their might be a relationship which could reduce the chance of future tragedies, is the height of reckless irresponsibility."

News flash. Tornado victims existed long before the invention of the automobile. Hurricane victims existed long before coal generated power plants.

Even so, this is all irrelevent. You can argue till you turn blue(or red) and it wont make a bit of difference. People will choose eco friendly power sources only when they are cheaper than whats currently available or when current resources run dry. It has nothing to do with climate or trying to control the future climate but more to do with market conditions.

Mountain Rose
In a list of the 43 recorded hurricanes since the year 1590 that killed 1,000 or more people, ONLY TWO HAVE OCCURRED SINCE THE YEAR 2000!!!

-----------------------------------

I would absolutely expect fewer people to die from hurricanes now than in the past, regardless of intensity of the hurricane. With more warning, more people can get away or do other things to protect themselves than in the past. Just because fewer people die in hurricanes now does not mean they aren't frequently more powerful. Climatologists and meteorologists study the weather, not the number of people that die as a result of the weather.

uber
"Your, "not a real Scotsmen" fallacy doesn't hold any water."

As does your "all republicans are neanderthals" fallacy. You won't talk to me, you insist on thinking in groupthink. You detest the individual that might not fall into a certain group. Grouping people together makes them easier to control and manipulate. ( See http://www.townhall.com/columnists/BrianFitzpatrick/2008/0 2/07/how_the_media_stir_the_brew_of_identity_group_politics )

This is why we get the results that I posted at 1:13. And why none of the liberals responded to it. It's also why Proud Liberal never responded to my 2:05 post.

So I'll ask you:
Why are you trying to Conserve the current state of the climate? Why won’t you let the climate Progress? Why do you feel the need to deny evolution? Why not let the earth evolve? Why not Liberate us all from the current situation? Vote for Change! The animals and humans will adapt. This is the way it is intended to be. For liberals to oppose climate change would open the door to considering the science behind evolution.

Redhead
"Why won’t you let the climate Progress?"

The question isn't will climate progress the question is what direction will it progress in and can we have a say in it.

If climate change is not a man made edifice that in no way means we can not remake climate to suite our needs and desires, even as we have controlled our food supply by way farming, and our health threw medicine, scarcity threw trade and transportation technologies, information asymmetry threw information technology.

We can either be masters of our destines or let destiny master us.

Conservatism is a plantation mindset of epic proportions.

Anyone notice?
By and large the responses from the Kerry/Gore/Global Warming supporters are filled with not much more than insults and, in their prejudicial mindset, facts, which amount to not much more than juvenile hypothesis.

Not much of value to them in proper scientific procedure because they already know the answer they want, and since facts seem to be against them they try to shut up anyone with any real facts.

Maybe someday they'll start to act more adult-like and actually become capable of carrying on a conversation without sounding like fight-starters in the bar after a few too many.

Redhead
"As does your "all republicans are neanderthals" fallacy."

I don't think Ron Paul isn't a Neanderthal, so I don't think all Republicans are Neanderthals.

But the dominant conservative movement today is one which has more philosophically in common with Thomas Aquinas than Thomas Pain.

The difference between republicans and conservatives is becoming more and more clear, and conservatives like Ann Coulter support fascists like Hillary Clinton over patriots like John McCain.

Redhead
Uber can't help it, he's just another brainwashed "True believer" in the church of Al Gore.

I have yet to have a gore acolyte explain how the earth was much warmer during the Roman period than it is now. Were the vikings driving SUVs to their farms in Greenland?

And what made it colder for the 500 years leading up to the american revolution, then began the current warming cycle.

I don't recall Paul Revere driving a Hummer. Maybe it was horse farts that warmed the earth last time.

And why am I buried under 10 freaking feet of snow, if we're all about to burn up?

Liberals are so Funny.

Market Solution
I do believe the climate change problem should be a market solution, and as Ron Paul has stated that can only happen when government stops medaling in the market.

Governments role should be restricted to ensuring the market stays free of coerced transactions.

In our market place government does not only shirk it's responsibilities, it actively engages in coercion on the side of business who can pay the most.

Government has become a bully for higher.

Conservatives have just aggravated this relationship over the last 8 years.

EPA chief Stephan Johnson was recently "crucified" before the Senate Public Works Committee for opposing 14 states' rights to reduce CO2. Can anyone explain why he didn't bring up all this "Mars is warming too" stuff? He just sat there and said Bush's approach to reducing CO2 is better.

"I would absolutely expect fewer people to die from hurricanes now than in the past, regardless of intensity of the hurricane. With more warning, more people can get away or do other things to protect themselves than in the past."
*************************************************

You are wrong.

First of all, there is a vastly larger population in the country now. For example, in the year 1900, the year of the Galvaston Flood, there were only 76,000,000 people in the entire country. By 2005, the year of Katrina, the US population was estimated at 296,809,000. This would mean that MORE people are likely to die rather than less.

The citizens of New Orleans were given several days warning to leave the city before Katrina, but many did not.

Interestingly enough, the US weather bureau in 1900 was able to predict the path of the Hurricane, and warned the citizens of Galveston to evacuate as early as September 4th, FOUR DAYS BEFORE THE HURRICANE HIT THE TEXAS ISLAND. Even if one must walk, four days is more than enough time to leave town.

The devistation from the storm was so severe, the rescuers from the Texas mainland could hear the cries of pain of the victims trapped below the debris as they walked over the top, looking for survivors.

Your theory also does not explain why the number of deaths from hurricanes decreases so severly on alternate centuries. The only explanation can be is that there is a natural cycle to storm severity that has nothing to do with human behavior.

Nope, your assumption is erroneous.

Try again.

"the weather service has told us we are going to have more and more intense storms,” Kerry said.

Who from the Federal Bureau of Weather has said this?

“And insurance companies are beginning to look at this issue and understand this is related to the intensity of storms that is related to the warming of the earth."

What is related to the intensity of storms that is related to the warming of the earth that is related to your wallet.

"And so it goes to global warming and larger issues that we’re not paying attention to."

What issue is larger than globull warmism? I thought this WAS the biggie. Mother Nature striking back and all that.

"The fact is the hurricanes are more intensive, the storms are more intensive and the rainfall is more intense at certain places at certain times and the weather patterns have changed.”

No sh%t. By what objective measure are hurricanes more intense or storms in general? Would you please let us know those certain times? My weatherman sucks and never seems to know.

This guy got what, 48% of the vote for leader of the too warm free world.

About wobbie... you mean weenie wobbie... or twinkie?

Well, it's a long story. But the short version is that he's a little Walter Mitty who CLAIMS to have been everyplace, done everthing, and is a Navy Capt., a test pilot, etc., etc., etc.

Of course, he's been busted on just about everything he's ever posted about, and we happen to KNOW FOR A FACT that he's a fraud... a cheap, lying phoney...

And, as you may have noticed, quite the arrogant, pushy little dude.

But, he's soon to be banned for good... and more...

Enough with the plantation talk please
In case it has escaped the attention of some posters, the Democratic party is poised to give the keys to the plantation to a black man. Additionally, as I have pointed out previously, according to the GAO fewer than 1 black resident out 4 received some kind of public assistance between the 1990 and 2000 census.

The argument is not only specious, but goes a long way towards explaining what meager gains the GOP has had in attracting blacks over the last few years have been lost. Despite the assumptions of some, we are not all, or even mostly, standing in line waiting for gov't cheese.

The democrats can give the Keys of The Kingdom to a chimp for all I care. It doesn't mean the chimp earned those keys or would know what to do with them when it got them. Unfortunately, Barack Hussein Obama is an empty suit whom the democrats have foisted on the country in the hopes we will feel enough guilt to vote for him. Personally, I would caution democrats to be careful what they wish for, err they get it. If his political performance to date is any indicator, he could set black aspirations back fifty years.

Stereotyping is never a good thing. No one should be pre-judged based on color, gender, or whatever. We must also face whatever facts there are when analyzing public policy or discussing issues. The black welfare mom is a stereotype that needs retiring but, we still have to deal with the fact that they are a disproportional representation of the population dependent on government subsidies. Correcting the problem has nothing whatsoever to do with what color they are and everything to do with the factors that cause it regardless of what color they are.

Imagine the ramifications for Africa, the destitute Arabs scattered across south asia as well as the poor in this country if we really study the causes and then teach it in our schools, our homes, our churches.

I moved to a different city years ago and the local paper did not carry my absolute must read favorite columnist. The search for his weekly column is what brought me to townhall. Globull Warming... P1
...is a real crock.

I just saw a commercial earlier today for a pseudo-science show claiming that a rise of six degrees in average annual temperature would destroy the world as we know it.

I've destroyed the world a lot worse in at least five different novels (don't try to find them as they're not currently available). A couple of times I used comets (think Deep Impact, only lots worse), and once I used a close encounter with an earth-mass black hole that kicks Earth into a larger orbit and a very weird rotational regime.

More to the point, I've also read a great deal about the geological history of the North American continent (and its predecessors).

Folks, we're in a long-term icebox configuration. At the moment, we're in an interstadial period between ice ages--and the only reason the Little Ice Age didn't turn back into a real ice age is probably the increase in methane caused by the development of agriculture around 8,000 years ago. Well, that and the Sun coming out of the Maunder Minimum. In fact, even during this interstadial, the average annual temperature has been significantly higher in the past than it is now, and may go up again--or not.

The plain fact is, what we don't know about climatology vastly outweighs what we do know. That being so, destroying the economy of the US in particular (and the rest of the world in general) by killing off the 5 Billion folks that would need to be destroyed to take us back to something resembling the world prior to the Industrial Revolution is NOT going to help us learn anything useful about the climate. Those of us left will be too busy struggling to survive one day at a time to have any interest in learning anything new about our world.

Globull Warming... P2
The people who've taken on Globull Warming (or Climate Change) as their combination Cause and Crisis (aka religion) aren't interested in learning the truth about anything. They're only interested in controlling everyone around them in hopes of controlling themselves.

Unfortunately, they're on the ascendance, and may well succeed in turning this once-great nation into a collection of feudal city-states with them in charge and the rest of us as serfs (or dead). They would find me useless, so I expect I'll be dead by the time they succeed.

Enjoy your success, liberals.

Global Warming

Phoenix Lady, good post!

Earth or Global Warming / Cooling cycles are normal. The Current warming trend is geologically identified as the Holcene era or period and is described geologically as "the end of recent glaciation". The Holcene era started more than 50,000 years ago and continues today.

Past earth cooling and warming cycles are being carefully studied in the scientific community and a broad array of complex systems and causes are cited. It appears there are even regional impacts, (under ice volcanic eruptions in Antartuca). New studies adjust findings each time new scientific evidence becomes available.

Accurate quantification of the impact man has / is having on the rate of global warming is difficult if not impossible given todays models and available data. Models require revision when proponents get unbelievable results as new theories and data are introduced.

I will support tax expenditures for scientific study by NASA if it is scientifically based but will never support politically driven "correction plans".

Do a search for carbon trading and you will find no scientific evidence, rather you will find consultants and financial institutions with "products" to make money from naieve customers and "carbon traders".

Now it's Global Cooling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Recall that the "scientists" (actually overpaid and overrated techies whoring for research grants) who have shrieked about GW for years now fret that the Sun's reduced output will lead to, get ready, Global Cooling! Does this mean that now we'll have to drive bigger cars and use more AC?

Does ANYONE remember the same self-appointed Cassandras back in the Seventies predicting a global ICE AGE? ANYONE? The covers of magazines showed all the famous NYC skyscrapers encased in glacial ice up to the 20th floors. These dolts either need to get off their drugs or find better ones.

-Ray

GRIM AND GHOULISH
Equals: John Kerry.

He's playing the perfect part. Doesn't even have to be Halloween.

Golf and Global Warming...
I would LOVE to have some global warming right about now, as the clubs are growing dusty...and I ain't kidding...this has been a particularly challenging and longer than usual winter for us on the Plains, especially since Globull Warming is occurring all around us, they say...

Yes, Wrat, I lived through the '70's (and the '60's and the '50's and some of the '40's) and well remember the loonies and their fear of future Ice Ages...

Warming? Heck yeah!
Of course the earth is warming. The glaciers that covered Canada and the northern states are gone. Again. And they'll come back after we've paid enough CO2 taxes. They'll go away after we pay enough global cooling taxes. Man-made global warming is based on science, I agree, but it's POLITICAL science. (See, poly sci was good for something after all.)

Us older folks have even seen cycles in our own lives. I remember a snow storm in May and a shirt-sleeve Christmas Day in New England, within just a few years of each other. A long time ago.

I had to laugh when I saw an ad for a TV special noting the ancient weather cycles and saying "this one is different - it's caused by man!" But on reflection, it's not a laughing matter when people believe it and force their beliefs on others.

There are some who seem to think that, collectively, they're the supreme being in the universe and can control anything. Of course, it requires working folks money. Tax us out of our transportation and then we won't work. See how long their government checks keep coming.

It's Not Settled Science
Not being a climatologist I am willing to be a little open minded on the topic of global warming. However I think more study needs to be done. I believe it is the height of arrogance to believe that mankind by himself(especially the USA) can radically change our entire planetary weather system. And some of you people blame manmade global warming for everthing. Hurricanes: global warming. Tornadoes: global warming. Strong thunderstorms: global warming. Wildfires: global warming. Snowstorms: global warming. The irony is I remember when conservatives were accused of being paranoid because some blamed an impending Communist takeover of the West for every societal problem. It appears global warming has become in the first decade of the 21st century what the Communist boogeyman was to the 40's,50's and 60's. It gets beaten to death by getting the blame for everything.

this is so easily fixed
Absolutely agree, Wilson54. The most we could ever do is make the world an unpleasant place to live for a few years. The earth is remarkably resilient. Think ice age. It's coming and will be most uncomfortable for us but completely natural for the earth.

I was in China on business for 10 days last year. I saw the sun only once and that was through a haze that was as bad as LA ever was. You remember, back when pollution was just noxious gases and CO2 was no problem? The sunrise was a spectacular although unusual color. I have a picture and a strange, persistent cough as souvenirs.

Interesting that China (who now emits more CO2) and India (who soon will) are in no way required to limit their own CO2 production. The reason for that is because their CO2 is the good kind. Unfortunately, our CO2 is the bad kind and we must therefore pay actual money to the world for some undetermined period. The end of that period is likely to coincide with the advent in the U.S. of reason or bankruptcy. My money is on bankruptcy, so to speak.

Being a solutions-oriented individual, my suggestion would be for the U.S. to purchase the technology from China to change our bad CO2 into the good kind and thereby preserve our economy so that each of us working stiffs can pay the government the $400,000 we each owe ourselves for all that free stuff it hasn't taxed us for to give to us. I'm pretty sure I have that right. Maybe ModMark can fact-check that for me since, judging by his posts, he seems to have a lot of time on his hands. And a potty-mouth.

To close, I'll go on record predicting that due to their emissions of water vapor, hybrids will also be taxed into oblivion because water vapor is by far the greatest contributor to global warming. That's also settled science so don't buy one.

Hurricanes and global warming
The hurricanes are more numerous and more intense than ever before. You are only looking at the Gulf Coast. Global Warming is Global. this year 2007 alone there were severe intense, category 5 hurricanes in several parts of the world. Oman for example, Oman seldom gets hurricanes but it got one a category 5 in 2007. The one that hit Bangladesh, the one that hit Taiwan and a couple of biggies that hit India and Australia.

As for those tornadoes, The Springfield Missouri Newspapers noted they had more tornadoes in their corner of the world in 2007 than in the total of the past 6 years. Plus they had several instances of 12 inches of rainfall in one 24 hours period. Unheard of in that part of the world. That pattern of odd unusual severe weather is happening all over the world. The drought in Australia, worst in their history that finally easing a bit because this is a La Nina year. La Nina is a periodic, about every 7 years, that brings colder and wetter weather to many parts of the world.
This all fits the pattern of what scientists have been warning that climate change will bring. And there's more on the way. Climate change is pneumonia and we are in the chills and fever stage of it.

In addition to the warming of the earth, just the build up of C02 is having other unexpected impacts. Much to the surprise of NOAA Scientists the oceans are becoming acidic. C02 dissolved in water forms carbonic acid.
It is measurable. So what will an acid bath do to creatures in the sea. The microscopic plankton that forms the bottom of the food chain and the coral that have calcium shells are the most vulnerable. Thousands of years ago there were massive volcanic eruptions, that released huge quantities of C02 and methane that made the oceans acid. It resulted in mass extinctions of sea live during that period.

So chuckle about GLOB BULL warming if you like. Just hope one of those monster storms doesn't hit your part of the world.

GW & Human Caused GW
Global Warming since 1970's is a fact.

The prior 30 years was Global Cooling is a fact.

Thing's change is a fact.

This is what Kerry implied:

Global warming is caused by Republicans and is NOT a fact. Mike is angry as we all should be.

God's Hands
Redhead says that God's hands are off the whole thing--sadly, this person has NO knowledge of how much God's Hands and His Eyes are on His world. It is His creation--He is vitally interested in everyone--yes, everyone to come to a saving Knowledge of His Son Jesus Christ.
Realistically, they will not--but He wants them to. IF His hands were not on our world, then it would not be here--the humans would have destroyed it many many moons ago--I doubt that you and I would even be here. But because of His Love and Mercy-- we are still here-Many of us are looking forward to the Wonderful day when "He turns to His Son and says-- Go bring our family home"-(my interpretation)-and the Trumpet will sound.
What a day that will be--and you can join us, you know!!!Trust Him today.

ModMark @ 9:07 CO2-a
ModMark said:
"I have never found a answer to the question, why does this "cooling and warming cycles" invalid the "CO2 greenhouse effect" theory? These two causes are independent of each other yet may have a cumulative effect.

I am willing to accept that the earth is a warming cycle. But could we be in the worst case scenario, the greenhouse effect cause by the CO2 is accelerating the warming cycle of the earth?"

Professor Ian Clark is a PaelioClimatologist who studies climate changes that go back millions of years. He asserts in "The Great Global Warming Swindle" that the increase in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere LAGS BEHIND temperature increases by 800 YEARS. The increase in CO2 is caused by the temperature rise, not the other way around.

chicaree
I've seen mass hysteria too many times over the decades not to recognize it when it comes around again. I put this all at the feet of a public education system that prefers to teach only one side of any issue. And an alarmist media that makes money off this and distracts us from very real problems we should be fixing.

Isn't the world is ALWAYS either warming or cooling and aren't species ALWAYS coming and going? Where in the world is the weather ALWAYS the same? While we're at it, what is the right temperature for the world and who gets to decide? I hope it's not what it was in the 50's because I nearly died from a severe heat wave then. Or now because today's severe winter storms are really a problem for me and my fellow senior citizens. Interesting that it was so incredibly hot then and now so cold. Hmmm.

Yes, I'm an old guy, not old enough to remember the last ice age here but I know there was one. And there was one before that. And in between it had to be warmer. I also know that species have been evolving and adapting or going extinct due to changing conditions for billions of years. In order for that to happen, conditions had to change. My own backyard used to be sea floor. Should it still be? If not, why not?

Why do you bring up volcanoes? Do you think we cause that? How about continental drift? There have been several mass extinctions and yet, here we are. Years ago Bangladesh was synonymous for hurricane disaster and relief efforts. It was in the news year after year for storm deaths. Apparently you were not yet born. And why 'La Nina'? Do we cause that? If so, what are we doing wrong every 7 years? We should probably stop doing that. Most CO2 is released by plankton so fewer of them will contribute to the solution to your problem. See? Balance.

If I might paraphrase Newton, if we cannot model climate change, our knowledge is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind.

science Gnubi
You have to look at averages. That's why you have to look at the world wide events of Hurricanes and look at those events over time. If you see an increase in frequency then you can start making statements that there is an unmistakable sign that things are changes. That is one thing about science and scientists. they have to be meticulous with their work as they are constantly checked and rechecked by their fellow researchers.
We can track temperatures and C02 thousands of years ago by clever methods worked out over the decades of climate study. The IPCC says there is not mistaking that there is warming occuring. C02 can be measure and is increasing. They can give the exact percentage of increase over ancient climates. C02 is know and has been known to be a green house gas, (traps heat) since the late 1800's. You can demonstrate it in a high school laboratory.

yes you are right that climates have changed in the past. And they have identified many of the causes of some of those changes. For Example Massive volcanic eruptions that dwarf the ones we currently have. I mean big ones. Yellowstone is one big huge caldera. They are currently researching other large volcanoes to see if they erupted in the same period and brought on one of those changes.

The climates in the past have changed from natural events. The devil in this change is that the world is densely populated and we are the cause of it. The wobbles of the earth, the flares of the sun, the volcanic eruptions. (yes Pinatubo was big enough to cool us off for a couple of years) have all been looked at carefully. The one thing that is consistently different is the C02 levels. They are off the chart from thousands and thousands of years ago.

For Gnubi part 2
We are causing climate and we could at one time have slowed and stopped it. That is debatable now. We are so densely populated, just think what a 3 feet of sea level rise can do, and that is likely going to happen either from Greenland melt or from a big area in Antarctic that is now being watched closely as the ice is thinning faster than expected. If we totally loose Greenland thats 20 foot sea level rise. Just where are we going to put all those people that live a few feet above sea level on the east and gulf coast,
and think of all the big cities that are almost at sea level such as HongKong, New York, etc. We can shrug this off as its just a natural cycle or we can work to lessen its impacts.

Climate change warming up
Heres a link to give you some idea of how Australia is struggling with climate change. Even with some rain these past few summer months there they are still in the grips of an 8 year drought. Australia lies in the subtropics one of the areas predicted to be first and worst hit as climate change progresses. Check out this news report on Melbourne
