Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The comic absurdity of the hysteria surrounding Gov. Mike Huckabee’s supposed “floating cross” TV commercial this week reminded me of a scene in one of my favorite movies of all time, “Absence of Malice.” The movie is great because it delves into the complicated world of newspaper ethics and features some great performances by Paul Newman and Sally Field.

In the film’s climactic scene, the terrific character actor Wilford Brimley, playing an authority figure who is trying to sort out a complicated situation created by the Paul Newman character, turns to the shrewd Newman who has exacted revenge upon an ethics-challenged newspaper and asks, “Are you really that smart, sir? Did you really pull this off and fool everyone in this room?”

That’s what I keep wondering about Mike Huckabee. If he managed to pick up a boatload of votes because he proved beyond a reasonable doubt how hateful and antagonistic the mainstream media is towards Christians, all while gently reminding the world how deep his faith runs, he would be way beyond just smart.

He’d be brilliant.

First off, let’s all agree how fun it was to see TV blowhards like Chris Matthews and Meredith Vieira come unhinged over the possibility that the infamous bookshelf in the background of Gov. Huckabee’s Christmas TV message was a sinister attempt to subliminally brainwash dopey Americans into seeing a (gasp!) cross.

Believe me, there wouldn’t have been as much teeth-gnashing and hand-wringing if the man had donned a Ku Klux Klan hood and set the bookshelf “cross” on fire.

The disdain and anger we heard all week was jarring. Over and over, people acted like this “cross” was equivalent to a Nazi swastika.

Somehow, advertising guru (and total jerk) Donny Deutsch appeared on MSNBC saying that the warm, fuzzy, non-partisan Christmas greeting was “frightening.”

It seems there’s nothing quite as terrifying to Madison Avenue than watching a smiling man suggest we remember that we’re celebrating Christ’s birth on national television.

Ditzy Meredith Vieira’s interrogation of Huckabee on The Today Show (“Wasn’t that a cross?” “Did you mean to display a cross?” “I think that looks like a cross”) shouldn’t cause any aspiring journalists to lose any sleep over their job prospects. If she can make millions a year carrying on like that, there has to be hope for every college journalism student who wants to break into TV.

Even some reliable defenders of Christianity took leave of their senses over this total non-issue. My friend Bill Donahue of the Catholic League told me on my radio show that he was quite concerned about Huckabee’s “pandering.”

Pandering? I’m not exactly sure how a Christmas message from a political candidate that may – or may not – have featured a cross-like image in the background is pandering. In fact, I’m still trying to figure that one out. Maybe Bill hit the eggnog a bit early.

But allow me to describe what really happened this week over this preposterous flap. Americans who are completely disgusted with the full frontal assault on anything and everything Christian paid attention. They simply could not believe their eyes and ears, that mean-spirited, Christmas-hating pundits and liberal media elitists were actually whining and complaining that someone (perhaps) had the audacity to display a Christian symbol during a Christian message that celebrated Christmas.

They noticed, all right. I fielded the calls and read the email and faxes that poured into our network studios. And more than a few said that up until now, they were undecided about who to vote for.

Not anymore.

The clear winner this week was Mike Huckabee. He garnered sympathy, support and appreciation over this controversy and he didn’t even have to admit that the cross-like bookshelf was inserted intentionally. Could it have been? Normal people don’t know and don’t care.

Pat Robertson expressed strong reservations about Mormonism on my radio show today, reflecting the concern, fair or not, that Mitt Romney’s religious beliefs are dramatically out of touch with traditional Christianity. It was a reminder as to why Huckabee has commanded such an impressive surge in the polls with only a fraction of the campaign war chests of his Republican rivals.

Pretending that Christianity isn’t important to Christians won’t cut it. And few will doubt what a deeply faith-filled man Mike Huckabee is, a faith that is shared by millions of Christian voters.

Many of those voters decided to support Gov. Mike Huckabee this week, and all because of a bizarre overreaction to his Christmas message.

It just might have been the best investment in a single TV commercial that a politician has ever made.

Gov. Huckabee, are you really that smart?

Is it a cross?
I don't know...

The bookcase looks more like a Plus sign to me.

Is every plus sign that we encounter going to be taken as the Cross on which Jesus was crucified?

I guess we better ban arithmatic from the public square as well. Where are the ACLU law suits about using the "cross" for addition problems in public schools?

Shut down the office of budget management, and disband the ways and means committe... because they clearly will be dealing with "crosses" all day, every day, and on the tax payer's dime!

.

It wasn't the cross
... that caused the problem. It was Huckabee's denial of using it. His innocent "it was just a bookshelf" line is the problem. Just like his innocent query into Mormon theology (which he is well versed in).

The guy should have just said, "Yeah - it's a cross. I am a Christian. It was a Christmas message." Instead we get the lie.

Huckabee could have this race wrapped up if he would just stick to a positive message, stop pretending like he is the only Christian running for office, and be honest with the people. He has so much going for him that many people will overlook the budget and illegal alien problems (oh, and the pardon problems).

Huckabee can't based on his record
Mike Huckabee can't win based on his record, so he has to appeal to the crucifiction of Jesus to emotionally manipulate voters. The whole thing is base and crass. I would love to see a don't ask, don't tell policy for politician's religion in this country. Just as public displays of affection are obnoxious to some people, so too is pandering based on faith alone.

Yuck!

Secularists: get used to it!
Sorry, its a cross: This is America.

Goi to communist China or Iran
or Somalia if you dont like crosses.

Merry Christmas to all you Huckabee and Christian haters.

i guess you wanted to hear "merry X-mas" in Mike's holiday greeting? Well forgetit you pompous PC fat heads! The cross stands for Christ and its his birthday-not yours!!

I support Mike Huckabee: a fine Christian man who stands up for the unborn, victory in Iraq, the second ammendment and the family-and against gay marriage, and the overbearing IRS.

Now thats a *true* conservative who puts morality over the greed and materialism of the money hungry secularists.

He is going to swamp the democrats come November
and I cant wait to see hillary or hussein obama concede.

lily
Sorry if you hate religion.
Why are you offended by a cross?
Maybe you should just go about the business of waxing your horns----hmmm.

Jesus is being demonized
after 911-01 because of the wish not to offend any other religion. Christ was not greeted, but put to death by the "usual suspects." However, Christians must stand or fall by how they stand in awe of the Son of GOD.

Trying to change the subject
This ISN'T an argument against religion as much as you Huckabots want to make it out to be.

The Huckster LIED. It really is that simple. Why didn't he just admit it is intentional? Is he ashamed? People lie when they are guilty or embarassed. Huckabee LIED, so the question is for which reason did he do it?

I don't have to be "anti-Christmas" to be offended by what Huckabee did, and even more upset that he lies about it. That's just a normal reaction.

If he is willing to lie about so many small, insignificant things like this, what is he going to lie to us about as President?

He has lied about his kid
He has lied about Dumond
He has lied about the cross being intentional

Is lying Christian? Is that what the Baptists do? Somehow their lies are justified, because anyone that has a problem with their lies are just atheists? I am not an atheist, I celebrate Christmas, and I would have appreciated Huckabee's ad and warm wishes IF HE HADN'T LIED.

Pandering defined
Where else in the world except the middle east could a presidential candidate,(church leader) run a religious message on television during the run up to national elections and not be defined as pandering?
I am happy to say that I have not nor will I drink the Koolaid that has damaged rightwing brains into there delusional state of denial.
America is NOT EVER going to be the theocracy that you would so like it to become....

Not subliminal
I'm a mathematician.
I was going to vote for Romney. I heard he was paying "volunteers" to vote for him in Iowa and elsewhere. Thought I'd ADD to my own personal wealth. I heard Romney was willing to pay anything to get elected.

But, when I saw Huckabee's PLUS SIGN in his Christmas ad, I immediately gave up my dream of becoming wealthy and switched to Huckabee. I just couldn't help it. That PLUS SIGN worked on my subconscious. What a brilliant campaign strategy. There are thousands of undecided mathematicians out here. I think Huckabee hit the mother lode. He'll have all of my kind behind him the rest of the way.

It's a stealth thing. Even the Wall Street guys, Mitt's paid pollsters, and FOX NEWS missed the vast, silent math voting block.

Hyperbolics for Huckabee!

Romney at his best!

jack in his boxy
You don't know that he lied, so shut to hell up.

One thing for sure
There aren't a whole lot of people neutral about the cross. It seems that people either embrace the cross or hate it.

It must be tough for some to even drive down the road and have to look at all the electric poles.

Of course it is a cross
It would be almost insulting for a minister to NOT have a cross when he was speaking about Christmas!
But no one seemed to notice the elephant in the room called a Christmas Tree or the fact that he actually said "Christ" and "God bless" - unthinkable!!
It does kinda bother me that he didn't at least say, "Yes, it does look like a cross. Must have been divine intervention!" or "Yes, I wanted the cross in my video about Christmas. Doesn't everyone?"
(He still doesn't have my vote - but not because of Christmas.)

It's subliminal perception, stupid
The issue is NOT that the ad was about Christmas. The issue is whether Huckabee's ad men are using subliminal perception techniques in their campaign ads.

If true, then it's a violation of campaign ethics. Ever since subliminal perception became controversial in the 1950s, candidates have generally agreed not to employ subliminal techniques in their campaign ads.

If we're going to try to sway voters, let's do it by appealing to their conscious minds by talking about issues and the qualifications of the candidates. Let's not use subliminal hidden persuaders as a substitute for rational argument.

Your Heart or your wallet
I hope the old adage is true. When it comes down to it people vote with their wallet not their heart.

We have serious issues to face in the country. The words depression/recession appear everyday, Iran/Iraq, immigration. The list goes on.

Whether it was planned or not the whole issue is ridiculous.

We need leadership not stupidity.

Huckabee needs to start telling us his take on issues not playing religious games and running around with Walker Texas Ranger.

Mormon's are out of step with mainstream Christianity. That's the point of their ideology. The are a restored form of the original gospel preached by Jesus Christ.

So let's move on and elect a quailified presidential candidate thatn can address the numerous issues facing the country.

BornToFarm
Strangely enough, BTF, it seems the Jews have the most practical attitude towards their religion and the religions of others. No doubt there are Jews active in the ACLU, but somehow i suspect they are the more secular types. All the Jews i know have a live and let live attitude. More and more, i see both Christians and Jews seeing the cultural values that connect them as being important, as the far more different values of islam and oriental philosophies gain importance on the world stage.

Priorities
Hard to believe. Illegal aliens, war in Iraq, entitlement bankruptcy, taxes, SCOTUS appointments, and the left wing chooses to go ballistic over whether a bookcase is a subliminal cross symbol?? Idiots.

Parade of the Paranoid
I have a bookcase in my living room. at Christmas time, my wife frequently removes some of the books and replaces them with decorations, much like in the now-infamous picture. If you take a picture from about 3 feet away, you may see the shape of a cross, or more accurately a plus sign. OH NO! I'm a fanatic! If you step back to five feet you might even see a swastika, especially if you suffer from deluded paranoia. OH NO! I'm a NAZI! Funny, I didn't even know.

MSM Lapdogs
It amazes me what the MSM lapdogs will swallow. The leftist newsies say it is sinister - and MANY believe it. The Hardball interview with Donny whats-his-name is laughable.

I've got a stupid dog (I'm expecting a PETA warning after that). My lovable, stupid dog will not eat everything I've given him. I wish some would use their brains instead of taking in, as gospel (sorry for the religious connotation - well - not really) everything the MSM says. Similarly, I wish some Dittoheads would use some discernment when listening to Limbaugh and Hannity.

So as not to offend anymore - Happy Holidays!

Anybody see Hillary's or worse Rudy's
Christmas ad. Nothing genuine about those at all. Hillary's sort of makes one cringe and if there is a worse ad than Hillary's it would probably be Rudy's. Both have political agenda's weaved into them. Can't they just say Merry Christmas, God Bless and be done with it? Rudy's even has a Santa Clause involved as he brings up immigration. I haven't actually seen the ads but there was a brief segment on NPR about all the Christmas Card ads from each candidate and they played bits and pieces of some of them.
Overall they said Huck's actually worked the best for Huck. It appeared as a genuine Christmas Card ad while the rest sort of crossed that line of taste.

Maybe Huck wouldn't have caught so much flack if he had put instead an aluminum pole in the room in place of a tree and then challenged Romney to a wrestling match. Happy Festivus to all.

I don't get it
Did any of the talking heads even listen to what he was saying in this ad? He was talking about Jesus Christ. As sublimninal imagery, it was totally superfluous and ineffective since it repeated what was already coming out of the man's mouth. I chalk this up to the 24/7 news business of creating a story where no news exists. Truly pathetic

Gallagher May Be On To Something
Here's yet another article and series of posts discussing Huckabee. His attackers attack, and his defenders defend, and he gets more hits on the next round of Googling.

I haven't seen the video. I've seen photographs on the internet. Looks like it could be a cross, but it is clearly a book shelf, too. I can't help but wonder who wouldn't expect to see a cross or the suggestion of a cross in a Christmas message, and why that would be so outrageous. Our retailers all but bet the farm on this holiday, and I'll wager that Chris Matthews has a tree at his house, so why all the outrage?

Maybe Huck is that smart.

BTW: Last night I shared with one of my Jewish friends that I was tormented over my feelings for Huckabee, in that I am a big FairTax fan, but a social Libertarian. My friend, without pause, declared that he likes Huckabee a lot. So, apparently Huck's Christian side is not an overwhelming impediment to non-Christians.

As a society are we going forward
The sad truth about Huck and the Cross is that this dissection and analysis is coming from what we would describe as educated people.
Mr. Mike could have been standing on a Iowan corn field buck-naked giving his Christmas message and there would have been some media nincompoop describing the religious significance of a naked Mike Huckabee standing in the middle of Winter in a Iowan corn field.
Have we as a nation descended so far down that we can't tell the forest from the trees anymore?

Huckabee's cross
I didn't care one way or another about the cross, but Huckabee's position that it's presence was unintended and unnoticed until afterwards was a boldfaced lie. The 'bookshelf/cross' dominates the scene and attracts the viewer's eye because of its brightness and movement. If it wasn't put there intentionally, it certainly was left in the shoot by design. If he had just admitted as much and confessed that he liked the effect, he would have displayed a refreshing honesty. I would never vote for him because of this obvious, and spineless, display.

How refreshing
Thank you.

Savage: (8:12AM) Agreed! 100%

But look who is making such an issue!!! Idiots!

I’m not a big Huckabee fan BECAUSE of his (previous) stand on shamnesty, etc., and looking into what several people who live in Arkansas while Huckabee was gov. has said.

Sometimes a bookcase is a bookcase is a bookcase! Ugh!

Of course, now that Gallagher has called Vieira “Ditzy,” he’s going to have to spend the next several weeks apologizing to all the ditzes in the world! Or, maybe he can just send a blanket apology to CNN, ABC, MBC, MSMNC, and CBS, etc. :-)

And Maybe, Just Maybe
Huck's denial of the bookcase being an intentional representation of a cross is done with a wink and a nod to his flock just because he knows the likes of Chris Matthews go apoplectic when the Born Agains look like they're trying to pull a fast one and sneak another religious symbol into the public square. And maybe, just maybe, Huck's fans enjoy watching him toy with the secularists. I am not a practicing Christian, but I'm enjoying the show. What makes the whole conversation surreal is that this all takes place in a Christmas greeting. Hidden in plain sight.

lilly please
I am not even defending Huck. I do not plan to vote for the guy. But as usual your attitude towards Christians is reprehensible.

So what do you what in the White House? An athiest? a Hindu? A Christian who pretends he isnt one? This idea you people have fabricated that Bush is some Bible thumping zealot who went to war for Jesus is absurd. You really need to re-evaluate the way you look at those who dont agree with you.

OK folks stop all the hyperventalating!
The facts are that an unabashedly Christian candidate is wishing the country a Merry Christmas. The fact that the ad-men strategically film him in front of a bookcase so that the image of a cross becomes apparent is not at all subliminal, it just reinforces his message...the same message that he has proclaimed all along... I am a Christian candidate for POTUS and proud of it...and unashamed of the gospel of Christ. Cudos to Huckabee and his ad-men. He is smart. I like Mike.

Everybody missed the other
subliminal message in the ad. The upside down candy cane in the shape of a letter "J" for Jesus. The red stripe is for his blood that was spilled and the white stripe is for cleansing of our sins.

Oh wait a minute...that was Hillary's ad. Sorry got those mixed up. Hillary owes us an explanation. How dare she have candy canes in her Christmas Card Ad.

You have to ask yourself why
Why would an unapologetic christian resort to putting a covert cross into an overtly religious commercial? Really think about it.

A man who makes absolutely no apologies for being a christian man puts a subliminal cross in a commercial about baby jesus.

Really say these things outloud and then think about how absolutely ridiculous you sound.

I am suprised there WASNT a cross in the message.

People keep trying to force Huckabee into a mold that doesnt fit, and they just appear ludicrous. The man was a MODERATE baptist minister, and if you look around you will find the hard conservative baptists dont like him. He was a MODERATE governor, and managed to effectively manage the government with a hostile legislature. Do we really have nothing else to talk about?

I wish the media would ask him questions other than the Romney attack ad talking points and about his religion.

He does have stances on the issues you know. How come nobody talks to him about those?

What Rob said! :-)
.

Why in heavens
does Huckabee have to HIDE a subliminal "cross" in a bookshelf AS he sits there forthrightly declaring his position about Christ and and the "Christ"mas holiday?

The ad was itself ALREADY OVERTLY about Christ! What would be the need of subliminals!

Subliminials are for when you are hiding something. Huck wasn't hiding a thing.

What kooks!

Oh, and somehow I think
if Mitt had the Mormon Temple arranged in the shadows and background of HIS bookshelves (pardom me, as I am laughing hysterically at this point), you can be sure Hugh would have kindly provided us with the video clip for our enjoyment.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Remarkable
How can anyone say the guy lied. YOU CAN'T.

Holy smokes....maybe it was just a freakin' bookcase. What would have been the advantage of a subliminal message when the copy of the spot was anything BUT subliminal. It was a Merry Christmas spot!

I like MIke. I'm no holy roller by any stretch. His faith really has nothing to do with anything for me. I like his message AND I like the Fair Tax.

By the way, can ANYONE cite ANY study that supports the impact of so-called subliminal messages. I'm aware of none.....AND I'M IN THE ADVERTISING BUSINESS.

guru
To answer your question, albeit rhetorical, I believe the MSM is enjoying trying to foster a food fight between what they would project as religious fanatics (1), and (2) they do not really want to focus on Huckabee's positions because they just might resonate with the masses they are trying to influence.

I also believe the MSM would like to portray the GOP as being in chaos, when in fact on most issues the candidates vary in shades, not hues, in their respective positions. Huckabee, as you point out, being relatively moderate in his past, is potentially more appealing to the mainstream voter than the rest and therefore is their worst nightmare. The only way to turn them away is to overstate his religiosity.

But for cryin' out loud, he's quick on his feet, he's funny as hell and plays bass guitar in a not very good rock'n'roll band, so he's very human. The MSM will do its best to obscure this side of him, methinks.

Sleeze
A better question for the good preacher would be "Mike Huccabee are you really that sleezy?"

Dear Governor Huckleberry
Who is more Christian, the person who internalizes the message of Christ and attempts to live it, or the person who climbs to the top of the highest mountain and tries to out-Christian everybody else?

I'm wondering, because your answer to the question will help me determine if I vote for you. Here in my home state of Texas, I am told daily by the very evangelicals you are courting that I am damned because I am Roman Catholic. They don't know me nor do they understand that I have read the Bible cover to cover and know much more about it than most of them, but they are convinced that I am damned. They haven't taken the time to understand my faith tradition at all, many of them thinking I worship the Virgin Mary, which of course anyone who has bothered to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church knows is untrue. What do you think?

I'm also wondering because we have this evangelical preacher in Houston who is convinced that God wants us to be rich. It reminds me of that song by another Texan, Janis Joplin, where she asks God to buy her a Mercedes Benz. That was a funny one, at first anyway. Now it's just confusing to me, since God made His only Son suffer so much during His time on earth. Did He make Jesus suffer so that we could be rich, or did He make Jesus suffer as an example of how you and I are supposed to live? What do you think?

I'm sorry to burden you with these questions, Governor Huckleberry, it's just that I'm so very tired of voting for phony Christians who are worried about everyone else's sins but not their own. I'm tired of businesspeople and politicians using the sacrifice of my Lord for their own selfish reasons. Most of all, I'm tired of people who should know better twisting my Lord's words to suit their own needs.

I haven't decided yet, Governor, but I have this feeling in the pit of my stomach like I got the other night after eating one too many tamales. Your answers will help me decide.

You know Huckabee is having fun with all
the hoopla over the message of "the cross" when he quipped that the real message could be found if you ran his ad in reverse, it says "Paul is dead".

Gomer
Nice letter with some legitimate points. However, I must point out, growing up in the Northeast and going to an Irish Catholic college as a Protestant that ALL of your points are a two way street.

I have been asked by Catholics whether or not I was really Christian or isn't Protestantism the lazy man's religion amongst other things. This includes never being able to be forgiven for my sins because I don't go to confession.

Unfortunately, very few of us take the time to learn anything of another's faith. I'm not saying you haven't, I'm just saying by and large that no faith is immune from being criticized for a perceived intolerance.

A bigger concern
I'm not concerned about the floating cross or bookcase or whatever. I'm more concerned about the violent criminals he allowed to float out of jail while he was governor or the benefits he wanted to give, on the taxpayer's dime, to those who have floated across our borders illegally.

I say no thanks to Huckabee no matter what imagery he uses in his commericals.

http://www.gohunter08.com

Dumb Christian Hick is Brilliant
This is hilarious. On the one hand everyone portrays Huckabee as a dumb Christian hick, while at the same time giving him credit for being smart enough to place a subliminal Cross in his ad; what could only be considered brilliant political maneuvering (if it were true). All the attacks, whether it be Huckabee is a dumb hick, a new Jimmy Carter, or now a brilliant political mastermind are just signs of desperation from those who have spent a fortune trying to buy the presidency or from the MSM who are scared to death of Evangelicals. In short this is just the same old politics of fear and bigotry rearing its ugly head to attack the current leader with anything and everything except perhaps the truth.

Gomer
I think you raise a legitimate point. However I think it all boils down to would you rather have a man of faith or a man of no faith as president.

I believe a man of faith is more likely to have some sense of humility than a man without faith. I also believe that having that faith will give him an inner strength that he will no doubt need on the job.

However, I think trying to pin down anyone's belief system on any given day is not particularly helpful, because as we grow and experience more trials in our lives our beliefs change.

I was raised an Episcopalian, but along the way I came to believe things different from what I was raised to believe. I now see organized religion an impediment to spiritual growth because one is given the answers instead of having to discover them on his own. Nonetheless, I think a man of faith at least has the wherewithal to ask for spiritual guidance, which a non-believer does not have.

Whole lot of judging going on
Thanks Mike Gallagher. It is refreshing to read someone who isn't hyperventilating over this "horribly offensive" ad! And can you imagine, Huckabee even used the word "Christ" (horrors!) in his Christmas greeting.

It seems about evey time I get ready to go for Romney or Thompson along comes another establishment Republican pundit smearing Huckabee again. It's going to hard not to vote for him just out of a feeling of defending him.

Huckabees's Cross A Joke!
What a Christian should be Obligated to ask Candidate Mike Huckabee

You have routinely declared that you consider yourself practicing Christian. Although regular prayer and routine attendance at church services are very becoming, I wonder how many Christians that currently support or that are thinking about supporting you have considered the basic Christian values which are essential for any nation to be considered righteous and holy by God. I understand that a President alone cannot change the ethical values of our nation, but what have you done to try and achieve these standards for the glory of the God you openly claim allegiance too.

Have you publicly recognized the Sovereignty of God? What have you ever done in your public offices to try and limit government as God has prescribed? Why have you forgot about what scripture states about the primacy of the individual? What about our American right to private property? What about the rule of law as prescribed by your Creator? As a Christian you are responsible for upholding republicanism within this nation as our founding fathers so wisely ordained. Not promoting a democratic monarchy! Vote for Ron Paul the Christian with true Biblical and conservative doctrines.

A Liar
If Huckabee had been bold and stated that it was intentionally a cross that he was displaying, as intentional as the Slient Night music in the background, and that this is Christmas, the birth of Christ, so na-ner, na-ner, I would not have felt ill feelings towards him. But he lied.

Who's the MOST Christian?
I could truly care less about YOUR religious beliefs.

I'm more concerned about my safety, my taxes, and how the government will or will not interfere in MY life.

On a personal level, if you're going to come up to me and start telling me about YOUR religion, I'm going to tell you to put a sock in it.

Forty years ago John F. Kennedy had to defend his religion to have a chance at getting elected. Today, candidates are falling all over themselves to prove that they are THE most religious.

When will the American electorate ever learn?

Don't excuse unchristian behavior.
I'm a Christian in my first year of seminary.

I'm not a Huckabee-hater, although I will likely vote for a Democrat next year.

However, Huckabee (or his campaign) clearly inserted a giant, floating, glowing cross into his Christmasy political campaign. Absolutely nothing happens by accident when it comes to how media is created in political campaigns. Besides, apparently unlike some here, I know a cross when I see it, and that's a cross.

But Huckabee is lying about it! He says it wasn't intentional, and that they had no idea!

Worse, there are evidently many Christians who are willing to look the other way and forgive this obvious falsehood, simply because they like the heart-warming sentiments in this overtly-Christian ad.

Problem is, that's not the way it works! If this man is truly a disciple of Christ, he needs to grow a spine. If he bears no shame in inserting the cross into his political ad in the first place, then let him have the courage and integrity to claim it.

A Bad Example of Christianity
Huckabee blatantly lied, adding yet another evidence to the non-believers of this world that Christians are really rather awful people -- untrustworthy people that worship adulterous megapastors who'll willingly bleed the last mite from poor widows; that Chrisyians are in-your-face moralists who don't behave the least bit morally because they they are already saved....

Yup. Thanks a lot Huckabee.

Hey, Mike Gallagher:
You write, "...The clear winner this week was Mike Huckabee. He garnered sympathy, support and appreciation over this controversy and he didn’t even have to admit that the cross-like bookshelf was inserted intentionally..."

Actually, Huckabee explicitly denied it. You're a media guy. Do you agree that miraculous, floating, glowing crosses appear in the background of Jesus-centered ads by random chance?

Or is it possible that Huckabee's media people aren't completely stupid, and knew exactly how to set up a beautiful, Christian scene? This is not the problem.

Problem is, Huckabee denied it. And you're bending over backwards to be an apologist for his disingenuity.

MSM
Its hard for the MSM to be supportive of Christianity because it goes contrary to commercialism and cheap raunchy entertainment. Its a business and American businesses have one priority, profit. Fox News is the worst offender by far. Its no wonder, the owner has never shown any inclination to anything but profit. I saw not long ago a video call Fox porn. It showed all the skimpy clad, well endowed women the show likes to show again and again. I guess if one wants Christianity they should look to the church and Bible.

Guru
Ditto.

No Pastor
I know of who is "On fire for the Lord" quits his ministry to get into presidential politics. I believe he is forsaking what is critically important in exchange for making a worldly impact.

Then he governs as a moderate.

Color me dissappointed.

Hmmm, from what the left is saying
We should vote for Huck because he's sure as heck smarter than they are. After all, he's good enough to convince the gullible lefties that a book case is a cross in a Christmas message. I must admit that's pretty effective in showing just how off plumb the left really is.

It looks like a bookshelf
I looked at the ad twice, and I have to say I think it looks like a bookshelf. The area on the right looks kind of like a torso, though. Maybe that's a crucifixion quote.

Galltegfa
But if Huckabee were indeed a man of faith, he would have owned up to what was obvious, instead of making foolish and cowardly denials.

Everyone in the race claims to be persons of faith. The question is, which one actually has enough faith to live by the precepts he claims to believe in?

I say Romney.

Seriously...
could it be that huckabee was trying to secretly deliver hidden codes to people for their votes?

i find it so amusing that the only people that find it questionable are...

1. libs
2. people who don't like huck
3. libs again
4. people with so low of an iq that they really want something to talk about. (libs)

CM
What possible motive would Huckabee have for lying about this mysterious floating cross? Why would he risk coming across as a liar over such a trivial point?

I have postulated that if anything he saw an opportunity to tweak the secular commentators, but I truly doubt the scene was intentionally shot to send a not-so-subtle message to the "true believers," like some weeping Virgin Mary in my bowl corn flakes.

I think this scene was shot with a bookcase in the background that due to the lighting and distortion of a camera lens took on an appearance that some may have interpreted to look like a floating cross. Someone decided to question the reason/intent for the optical illusion, and suddenly Huckabee is challenged for attempting to send subliminal messages to a not-so-secret society.

But if you think Romney is purer in heart, that's your business. If Romney got behind the FairTax, I'd consider him too.

The knee-jerk reaction has backfired!
I can expect the looney MSM to distort the facts, however, what, really solidified my vote for Mike H. is how I have watched, and continue to see, Romney and his staunch supporters dancing with the devil, to join the MSM in their smear campaign against Mike H.

Don't you hard-core conservatives understand yet that Christians are Christians 1st and conservatives 2nd?

I could care less what the left thinks about Mike H. Moreover, nothing is more repugnant than to watch the Romney crowd play the religious card against him. Especially after Romney gave his "Don't hate me because I'm a Morman" speech.

I'm almost to the point where I can declare "Anything but Romney!" And I'm a CONSERVATIVE!

Liberals = vampires?
Although I don't really support Huckabee's candidacy, I definitely support his commercial. Conservatives, even if they're behind Romney, McCain, Giuliani, Paul, or anyone else should at least stand behind Huckabee and his commercial, regardless of their religion. Liberals want to censor his freedom of expression, calling what they don't agree with or understand terms like "frightening." It's another liberal assault on free speech. Liberal groups like the ACLU would fight for child porn, yet prominent liberals like Chris Matthews would mock and question your right to display a cross in a Christmas message.

Liberals react to the cross as if they were vampires in any vampire film. If I were any Conservative pundit invited on a liberal talk show this week I'd wear a garlic-chain necklace and carry a large wooden cross with me in mockery of liberal intolerance, bigotry, and close-mindedness.

Armageddon
It would not have been an issue had Huckabee not lied about it. Now he has made his character an issue -- and by Christians defending his lie, it makes THEIR character an issue too....

I think Christians ought to hold their representatives to a higher standard of behavior, higher than... Bill Clinton, say. You were all so appalled that Clinton lied about his indiscretions -- and were correct in your assertions about what that said about his character. And you were appalled that his supporters would say it was OK for him to lie, and that he had a right to lie -- and what did that say about their character...? Fair enough!

But now you are doing the same thing. You are saying it is OK for a Christian to lie (Oh? Would Jesus agree?) if it is about covering up a display of a symbol you happen to like.

And isn't Huckabee's lie about being ashamed of Jesus?

cm
Idiot sir, tell us how you know Mr. Huckabee lied.
Quit crying & slobering at the mouth & tell us.

Tell me
How is stating that a bookshelf is a "bookshelf" a lie??

CM
BTW:

I have appeared in both stills and video for training materials, and I can tell you from my experience that lighting is a very, very tricky element.

I have seen stills shot from many different angles, lighting intensities, shutter speeds, etc., and you don't know what you're going to get until you see it in it's final form. Too much light washes things out; light from the wrong angle casts weird shadows; insufficient light hides things.

And with video, it's a real crap shoot. If someone were actually trying to simulate what is being suggested here, they'd be either serious lighting/video geniuses or using special effects.

So, I'm of the opinion that what some may have seen as a floating cross is coincidental.

Rude Name Caller:
Can we agree that professional media people examine every angle of a shot before and after they shoot it? Even a quasi-professional photographer examines the composition of a shot -- and understands what will be left out and what will be left in....

And then they edit and tweak the color and revamp the sound and get it just the way they want it before it is approved by the campaign and finally released. So, Huckabee is trying to make the claim that he, a man of the cloth, who has revered this symbol of Christianity from his youth, didn't happen to notice it, just glowing there...? Come on.... Let's not be silly.

I'm not saying that Huckabee had no business displaying a symbol of Christianity in a Christmas message. I believe that he has every right to do so. I would have even liked his ad had it not been followed by such a blithering denial. How wimpy is that...?

Stand up for your convictions, Huckabee!

2+2
The professional lighting crew really blew it then, because it looks more like a lighted plus-sign rather than a cross. Why didn't they simply place a real cross on on the empty bookshelf??

CM
There was no motivation for him to lie about it. Period.

The Media obviously has to much time on their hands to come up with this stuff.

It's nonsense.

Huckabee
Huckabee: ‘If Anything,’ We Treat Inmates At Guantanamo Bay ‘Too Nice’

This is why Huckabee's commercial is creepy. He cares nothing for Christain principles but wants to be elected.

"..FBI agents who worked at the facility have reported that detainees were subjected to harsh conditions, including “the use of growling dogs” to “intimidate detainees,” at least as recently as 2004:

Detainees at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, were shackled to the floor in fetal positions for more than 24 hours at a time, left without food and water, and allowed to defecate on themselves, an FBI agent who said he witnessed such abuse reported in a memo to supervisors."

Thanks, Mike Gallager
Thanks, Mike Gallager for writing a positive article about Mike Huckabee. With almost every other conservative pundent just about to the point of foaming at the mouth at the gall of us Heartland folks actually backing Mike Huckabee your article was a breath of fresh air. I turned Rush off today, You know Rush, the guy who made a commitment to not choose sides on the Republican Presidential candidates until after the primaries. Well, he didn't pick a candidate; oh, no! He only choose one to trash. He did have to make a few comments about Huck and his supporters a couple of weeks back when he refered to us Huckabee supporters as a "Cult", then he started refering to him as the Huckster, and today he came totally unglued. Ann Colter is foaming at the mouth so bad I'm afraid the TV cameras are going to get messed up. I never thought before there were secret emails between the Conservative pundents like the liberals do, but now I'm beginning to have my doubts. Conservatism is supposed to be the movement of free independent thinkers. Now that we are; there are forces from every segment of conservative pundentry screaming for us to stop!! Well, pundents, you taught me to be a free thinker and now I am. I'm voting for Mike Huckabee and you're not going to stop me!!!!

Huckabee's commercial and all the Hubbub
First of all, I liked Huckabee's commercial! It was warm and a nice refreshing change to have a politician just wish everyone a Merry Christmas!
As for all of the lunatic's squalking about a floating cross, I say you are making something out of nothing. It looked like a window pane to me and even if it looks like a cross - SO WHAT!

I don't support Huckabee or anyone else right now...the jury's out. I do know I won't support any of those losers on the "D" side.

To Taft and his concern for the prisoners at Gitmo, you're nuts! I think people like you care more about the poor terrorists at Gitmo than people being slaughtered by those clowns. I'm with Huckabee on that one. What goes around comes around for those prisioners.

I don't care
I really don't care about his cross commercial. What matters to me is Hucks policies, and most of them are lousy.

I'm gonna vote for a true Conservative. I'm gonna vote for Fred.

Huck Not good Huck not good..
The Huckster is not good for the true

"compassionate conservative" who will give the
country and the country's tax dollars away.

If it was, it was brilliant
Just think about this. In his Christmas ad, Huck was about pro-Christian as you can possibly get. He said the whole point of the holiday was celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

But instead of talking about that, he and his staff were so ingenious that he inserted something that appears to be a cross yet has plausible deniability. Chris Matthews and his ilk are going to decry anything this man does but the whole thing serves to give Huck HUGE media attention which is what he needs due to his extremely low fundraising. Furthermore, it also simultaenously serves to make liberals look like the whacked out conspiracy theorists ala building seven.

If it was planted, it was sheer genius.

Jagman
Good observation concerning 'compassionate conservative'. I will never fall for that BS again. In this election I will only vote for a true Conservative, and from my name you can gather who I mean.

NO MORE RINO'S!

Sir Aaron
It is working out well for him, true enough. Could be genius, more likely, a blind pig found an acorn. He doesn't have control of the media which is the real driving force behind the success of his cross/not cross gambit. The MSM over and over shows how shallow and trivial the talking heads are. Every thing gets into the news except actual solid discussion of the issues.

It's not a cross
It's a bookshelf. I'm a Mormon, and I think that Huckabee intentionally and subtly makes insinuations about how he's Christian and that evil cult-member Romney is not, but without actually saying it so he doesn't sound "mean-spirited". Or he "innocently" asks questions about things he already knows the answer to, and words his "innocent" questions in provocative ways, intentionally to get an issue repeatedly raised that he believes will hurt his opponent. I think Huckabee is wrong on just about every issue, and I think he knows how to play dirty.

However, in this case, it's just a bookshelf. And no, he's not that smart.

Final word
Whether the cross was planned is not even relevent. I know darn well that the video had to have been reviewed by someone prior to it being aired and when the bookshelf cross suddenly appeared somebody said wow we have a winner.

Hucks attitude towards the cross issue tells me a lot about the man. He told me in his own way..... I cannot be trusted!

Not to brag...
I actually wrote a shorter version of the same sentiment on my blog site (http://www.plumbbobblog.com/?p=100).

Personally, I don't think Huck's ad men planned the "cross." But even if they did, good grief! A politician produces an ad saying "Enjoy Christmas with your family" and "It's about the birth of Christ," and he includes a "subliminal" Christian symbol. Any journalist who considers THAT newsworthy should be shot dead, slammed into the stocks for 3 weeks, and THEN fired. Oh my freaking GOD! A "merry Christmas" ad with a Christian symbol in it! How HIDEOUS!

It's actually a nice ad. And it's by far not the first "merry Christmas" we've ever received from a candidate.

What we're seeing is the manifestation of something that's not going to be discussed, but badly needs to be: whereas anti-Mormon bigotry is off limits, anti-Evangelical bigotry is fair game.

I personally hope Huckabee does not receive the Republican nomination. Virtually anybody else would be a better candidate. And yet, I don't think he's a bad man; quite the contrary. I think he's principled, capable, and intelligent, and far superior to anybody the Democrats are going to nominate. I just think he spent too many years as an Arkansas Democrat (yes, that's what he was) and still thinks of the government any time he encounters a problem that needs to be solved.

Hide the garlic
I am beginning to think that liberals are really vampires. They come unglued at anything that even resembles a cross. At least the ad wasn't shot in direct sunlight.

Why do GOP Insiders Hate Huckabee?
NRO-The Rush Fallout for Huckabee: Fatal, or Missing the Target?

After today, Rush Limbaugh is in reruns until January 3, the day of the Iowa caucuses.

Highlight from a moment ago: “The drive bys are doing everything they can to influence the Republican primary. Mike Huckabee has been getting a pass from the drive-bys… They don’t want Rudy because they think he can beat Hillary. They don’t want Romney because of the same thing. They don’t want Fred Thompson because of the same thing.”

Can a guy who’s been slammed as hard as Mike Huckabee has by Rush Limbaugh, the most popular conservative radio talk show host in the country, go on to win the Iowa caucuses? Anybody think Rush will have dropped this issue by the third of January?

A Republican who is not amused
The article misses the point. For me, and other non-huckster Republicans, the floating cross appeared to be a subtle repeat of the hateful intimation that Huckabee is a Christian and the others are not. This kind of tactic is as destructive to the Republicans as anything done in recent years - a sort of hijacking of Christianity to justify supporting a Republican who has no credentials as a conservative. If Huckabee thinks he can unite the Republican party with a Christianity litmus test, he is dead wrong. Further, if he thinks that other Republicans will get over his implications they are not up-to-snuff Christians and vote for him in November, he is also wrong. A Huckabee nomination is a guaranteed loss in the general election.

Argh
I'm a Huckabee supporter but you media conspiracy guys can drive me nuts sometimes the MSNBC comments were supposed to be humorous and doesn't Pat Robertson support Giuiliani?

For the Record
McCain made a far more religious christmas ad that actually had a real cross in it and no one blinked an eye.

http://www.johnmccain.com/mychristmasstory/

Hasn't Huckabee told all he is Christian
quote:
First off, let’s all agree how fun it was to see TV blowhards like Chris Matthews and Meredith Vieira come unhinged over the possibility that the infamous bookshelf in the background of Gov. Huckabee’s Christmas TV message was a sinister attempt to subliminally brainwash dopey Americans into seeing a (gasp!)
-------

Chris Matthews and Meredith Vieira only show how arrogant they are.
Did the sublime showing of a book case fool them any? Heck no! lol
Yet they think it fools everyone else?
How about city maps and cross streets? Very subliminal message of Christianity.

I wish the left
Would stop it.

All of this Lied crap, leveled against every friggin person on the right, if you are so honest why are the actions of your heroes never depicted as lies/evil/et cetera?

Why is the left looking to split the right on religion? They constantly fan these flames, and every one seems to fall for it. I No longer care about any of this religion stuff, when the press focuses on their people with the same sort of questions then I will care.

Hitlery, what was up with all the fund raising stuff this time? Didn’t you lie about knowing the fund raising guy, who has you on tape conspiring not to leave evidence?

Hitlery, You claim to be Methodist, are they pro child murder? You are.

Obama, answer about your ties to Islam, over and over and over, just like Mitt has had to do. It has the same amount of bearing.

The left & the press had NO such concerns, or questions about the new Muslim congressman last year, they were quick to chant no-religious-test/questions allowed. Even thought his faith is about as anti representative republic as it is possible for a faith to be.

The left in general I wish you would give the same benefit of doubt, the same assumption of goodness to our soldiers, Christians, and the right/republicans, that you lavish on left, killers, perverts, commie dictators, and Muslim killers.

Huckabee is a shady minister.....
Huckabee has his shameful acts also as most of the other, but Huckabee, the Holy man's son was in some serious criminalm trouble until secretly his father ordered it covered up by the Arkansas
Troopers....so where is this holy (?) man turned crooked, and a lying politician....???

Shame, Shame, Shame, Christian ?

Oh, for heaven's sake
For those of you who think that Huckabee lied about knowing that his bookshelf looked like a glowing cross, just stop and think for a minute. How many of you have reread anything you've written and when going over it, missed glaring errors because you knew what supposed to written. Did it never occur to you that when he saw the spot for the first few times, he only 'saw' his bookcase? The eye so often sees what it's used to seeing even if that thing has changed dramtically.
I have absolutely no trouble believing that he in fact did not realize that the bookcase he probably looks at hundreds of times a day was the bookcase he saw after the filming.
I am neither a Christian, nor do I plan to vote for him, but this whole thing is just too rediculous for words.

Mike Huckabee's cross
Many liberals ARE Christian, many liberals ARE
patriotic, many really DO support the troops and
yes,the "spinners" ARE that smart...set it up,
make it look as though Christian patriots are being attacked by liberal heathens...and a fellow
canNOT lose!!!Yes,he can and yes,he will because
more folks(forget the labels that shove people
into categories)ARE "that smart" now.Karl Rove did his dirty work and did it well ala Disney and
might be able to do it again...but I hope not.I
hope we elect the best person for the job,for
once...novel idea...making saving America our top
priority.Think,Americans,really think and weigh
the issues and LISTEN to what the candidates say.

Huckabee the Flim-flam Man
When professionals make a video they study the final product very intently. And I'm sure the principal must give his or her approval too before the final product is released. To insinuate that this scene with the cross was not deliberate is actually an accusation that the professionals were incompetent. Huckabee is a con man--the second coming of Jimmy Carter.
Let us all pray.

HEY, Merry Christmas!
If anyone is fool enough to read all 100 posts on this topic, let's break and grab some hot chocolate and put up our feet and take a break from all this.

This discussion
has reached the outer limits of absurdity and has taken on the nutty personna normally attributed to a Ron Paul cultist.

To all you God & Jesus Haters
Where oh where is the proof Mike Huckabee has lied about anything?
The last thing any Christian wanys to knowingly do is deny Christ and his crucifixtion, i.e. the Cross. Our Scriptures in which most Christians hold up as infallable tells us very plainly the implications of doing so and since Mike Huckabee has openly declared his Christianity there is little reason to doubt his sincerity, unless of course you hate God, Jesus and all that Christianity stands for.
As for Mike Huckabees stand on Mormonism it might very well be that he has little to do with Mormons in his state of Arkansas and thereby doesn't know as much as he should. It is reasonable to assume so and here is my reason for saying this. I'm sure the Bpatist in Arkansas out-number the Mormons highly and they aren't as well recieved or listened to quite as much as in other states where Mormons have a larger gathering, in being that Arkansas is in the middle of the bible belt. Here in Wyoming, we have whole communities that the majority of residents are Mormon and the closer you get to the Utah border the more so it is. There is a difference. Here we have to contend with the young missionary boys on a daily basis. They quit coming by my door long ago because they haven't been able to answer basic questions, even when they bring an older watchdog elder with them. Questions they can't answer are simple Scriptures found in Isiah 44:6 & 8 and Revelation 22: 18 & 19. The wording is plain enough so even a dolt could understand them, but the dishonest way Mormons in general will not step up and answer these simple Scriptures is pretty much proof to me that thye can't without stepping on their own faith. If Romney is sincere then obviously so is Huckabee.

Typo
Just so you word pundits don't have an uproar over my typo I meant to spell Baptist and not bpatist.

Of course it might be just a book shelf
The Bruhaha over this book shelf is laughable.

The liberal media sounds again like the Taliban.

Pandm
"there are no mistakes in advertising" Marketing 101

That said, and I don't care for all the simple-minded mormonophobes, the ad itself was well done. I would say VERY well done

It is certainly a good thing Huckster has some smart people in the ad dept to compensate for all the rest. Yourself included.

It wasn't the message, it was the lie/denial. Or is he really that stupid?

The Huck could have easily said,

"Look, I have a loyal following of fanatics. I will secure my base, religion bait the rest and hope for the best since I have nothing more than my slick willie charm after that.

If I win, I'll bring on McCain and we can split off enough of the Demoncrats because they will have a hard time figuring out who is more mushy, except on a few socon issues."

The sad thing is it will be the lowest turnout of republicans in recorded history unless there is a write-in or draft

Most of you that are afraid of the cross, had better change your doors on your homes. Most of them are in the shape of a Bible and Cross. That is why they are called Bible and Cross doors.

How do you know that Mr Huckabee lied? did you have some divine intervention that tole=d you that it was a lie. It amazes me that you are the judge and jury. What a bunch of losers.

P.S. I am for Fred.

No Huckster! No Regularization Rudy!
The Huckster has charmed the media and debate viewers, but close inspection reveals a lover of ILLEGALS and a globalist-- egad! No mas! Regularization Rudy and the Huckster might be thinking about an odd couple pairing, but their agenda would be Presidente Jorge redux-- precisely what 70%+ of Americans rightly say they do NOT want.

Meandering Mitt is a bit hard to trust, but he is SAYING the right things about the ILLEGAL invasion. Regularization Rudy, the Huckster, and Juan McQuisling are verboten on ILLEGALS alone-- END OF DISCUSSION! You can try to put lipstick on those ILLEGAL-loving pigs, but they still oink. Fred has solid ideas on many issues... check them out:

http://www.fred08.com/virtual/Immigration.aspx

Duncan is a good guy who has fought hard against ILLEGALS, but history does not bode well for a Congressman trying to jump to POTUS. Intellectually, I like Ron Paul... his supporters are broad based, and he is raising $.

possible acceptable choices include...
Mitt, Fred, Duncan and Ron Paul...
I could CERTAINLY embrace Ron Paul! I teach business and econ to college students... personally, I GET what Ron Paul is trying to say-- we would ALL be FAR better served as Americans if we could tamp down the ulterior agenda open border crowd, globalists, PC ilk, RINOS, and neoCONS, ALL of whom have limited special interest, self-aggrandizing agendas that are opposed to traditional conservative American goals, which include limiting govt. influence and spending and foreign wars unless absolutely necessary.

I have no love lost either for Christian conservatives who seek to impose their perception of morality upon the rest of us. The less centralized determination for all the better. Hence, the very nature of personal freedom and self-determination intended by the collective wisdom of our wise founders.

Tony
Isaiah there is no issue. I can see how someone like yourself would be stumped by that. Deut 10:17 sure is perplexing to you though I am sure.

Revelation, you obviously interpret the "this book" part to mean the Bible, when John actually refers to the book of Revelation. ... And since historically it (Revelation) was written before Acts, are you suggesting we throw out the rest of the Bible? I certainly would hope not. But it's your option.

Ok, explained, now you can move on

[but I know you won't, you'll just keep on Michael Mooreing the whole disagreement you and other mormon-o-phobes have with the faith]

so be it, I can't will a dandelion to be a blade of grass

VOTERS ARE YOU REALLY THAT STUPID?

....Mike please ...

.....Let's face reality ...Huck was playing the religion card pure and simple ...he was saying I am Christian and Romney belongs to a cult ...those were not his words but that was his intent ...

.....The bookcase was highlighted to show the cross ...this is intent ...the ad was screened before it was shown and the cross was obvious ...this is intent ...but the most incriminating part to me is that Huck denied that it was intentional ...

.....If Huck had said yes ...I am a Christian and this is a Christmas message so I wanted to show a cross ...then he would have been honest and I would respect that ...as it is ...I see a charlatan and a Huckster cut from the same cloth as Bill Clinton .....COLOSSUS

He's a politician. When in doubt, expect the worst. However, bigger gaffs than missing something in the background have been aired.

What about his family
While there is a lot of furor and debate about the cross in Huckabee's ad, the most notable thing to me was the lack of family. Why did he not have his family there with him? Why do you never even hear about his family or his wife? Not that I want it to be a political ploy, but I do like to see that a candidate has a good, happy family. You can judge a man's leadership by how well he runs his house.

Huckabee's ad runs in stark contrast to Ron Paul's Christmas ad (which, though the press says absolutely nothing about it, was the first Christmas ad released by a political candidate this year). You can see it here:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=XZPCWGtIupE

Note the warm, family atmosphere and the distinct lack of any overtly political message. It very much feels like a warm and heartfelt Merry Christmas greeting from the Paul family to the nation. And despite what CNN says, Ron Paul's ad WAS first (released on Dec 11th).

Regardless, the only candidates that have active participation and support from their families appear to be Obama, Paul, and Romney. For someone who is supposedly pro-family, I find the lack of Huckabee's family in his campaign curious.

Baseballdoc
YOu are so right!!
The president of the conservative Southern Baptists in Arkansas, has come out in support of Fred Thompson. He says Mike Huckabee is no conservative.

Why is it when people try and point out his short comings, point out that he is no conservative, people ignore his record, and insist that he is being attacked because of his Christianity? No, he is being attacked by me, because of his lack of true Christianity. He is a liberal, and a liar. Not christian values.

Khomar
Good catch.. I concur that it is curious that we have yet to see or hear from Hucks family. Usually by this point, we know the clan. Is he hiding them? Don't know. But I would certainly agree that how a person runs things at home is a bit of an indication as to how he might run other things. Then again, he hasn't run much very well in Arkansas with all the commutations and all. Perhaps its that whole subservient wife thing he believes in ... I'm not saying that is bad, look at Hillary for the exact opposite and one can tell it is not necessarily a bad quality, but inquiring minds would like to know. Where is she?

nanna
"No, he is being attacked by me, because of his lack of true Christianity."

I agree. Despite his talk about Christianity, the Bible tells us how to determine what is in a person's heart: their fruit. Huckabee's "Christian" message has done nothing but alienate unbelievers in the country, and his snarky commentary ("don't Mormons believe Jesus and Satan are brothers", "Paul is dead, Paul is dead") is in bad taste. His record is very liberal, and even in the recent reformation of the Southern Baptist church to return to the Bible for their doctrine, he stood opposed to the change.

Unfortunately, Huckabee represents all that is wrong in Christianity in the minds of many Americans (including Christians), and he is the only "Christian" being promoted today in the media. If he is a Christian, I have yet to see any fruit to bear witness to that fact.

Too harsh?
Perhaps my previous remarks (titled "nanna") were too harsh, but if someone is going to use Christianity as the trademark of their campaign, they had better live up to the billing.

Peggy Noonan, Rich Lowry, et al. have
become unhinged by the "cross" in the bookcase. Next they will be telling us that "Paul is dead" is buried there. It was an innocent and lovely ad - get over it, elitists! They hate the Huck because he is not a Harvard/Yale gradute. This is the revenge of the "real folks" who have been carrying the GOP water for too long and have been treated with contempt.

What I meant
Was his professing so loud and constant that he is a Christian, but he isn't showing that he is. There are so many ways that he is showing that he is NOT a Christian.
He is the one that brought up his Christianity, and is running on that!! His record as a governor is terrible, yet he keeps lying and squirming around it. An excuse for everything. Now after he was shot down by condi Rice about the "bunker mentality" remark, he's saying "Well several writers were in on writing that article, and I don't remember if I was the one that said it or not." WEASEL!! Politician not Christian.

One of the blogs here on TH today says he thinks government should regulate salaries!! Just what we need. This man doesn't know what he's doing!!

Khomar
It was my fault, I didn't make myself clear when I made the first post.

You and I see eye to eye. I just worded it badly.

Huck and Mitt
Everyone who worried that Huck lied, have you seen Chris Mathews' apoplexy about Mitt's lies concerning his dad's having marched with MLK?

The Dems have discovered the button that starts $ flowing to liberal candidates: Bush lied; Cheney lied; Gonzales lied; Rudy lied; and if Fred or McCain begin to advance in the polls, they will be found to have lied, too.

By repeating the word, perhaps they hope to minimize its effect when we realize that Hillary lied/lies (oh, but that's old news) and Obama lied/lies and Edwards... well, he's a lawyer. What else would you expect?

Obviously, the MSM weren't nearly so concerned when the Dem candidates put on their faith faces a couple of months ago.

Doesn't anyone remember that Georgians warned us about Jimmah and Arkansans warned us about Bubba?
Back then the word "Liar" wasn't flung around as loosely as it is now; but those who were, were.

nanna
No drama. I was tracking with you. I think it was actually my comment that might have confused things.

The issue of Christianity was one of several things that I discovered about Ron Paul that drew me to his campaign. He has a very strong testimony for Jesus Christ, but he does not like to talk about it publicly because of the hypocrisy that often comes with using Christianity in politics. However, not only does Ron Paul confess Christ, his life matches up with his words. And as for fruit, it amazes me how he has drawn atheists and unbelievers to his cause even though they realize that he is a strong believer. In fact, he seems to be softening their dislike of Christians as a result. I cannot help but compare it to the book "Just Walk Across the Room" by Bill Hybels where he talks about reaching out to nonbelievers.

Now, please do not get me wrong. I do not think people should vote for Ron Paul just because he is a Christian -- that would be to follow the same path of hypocrisy of Huckabee. If you do not agree with his positions, then I respect your decision to cast your vote elsewhere. But for me, when it came to walking the Christian walk in the political life, it was refreshing to see that there are still a few good men around.

Sometimes a bookcase is just a bookcase
If it had been anyone but a Republican delivering anything but a Christmas greeting, people would not be making all of this noise about a rectilinear bookcase.

jmcenanly
I disagree. It goes beyond a bookcase because Huckabee has made Christianity such a central issue in his campaign. I think it may have originally been an accident, but they probably liked the imagery it created. That is fine, but when Huckabee later denied it, THAT is what created the controversy. If he had simply said "yeah, we saw the cross, liked it, and decided to keep it", this whole thing would have blown over.

Of course, then he would have missed out on days of free publicity for his campaign.

How ridiculous
The man wishes people well, and is ostracized for it. Whatever happened to "Peace on Earth, and good will towards men?" ...Or is that now sexist, too?

To quote Charlie Brown: "Good grief."

YellowGuy
See? The plus-sign being modeled after the cross is just another example of Christian exceptionalism and cultural bias. We need to create a more culturally friendly symbol for the summation of numbers that will unite all peoples. Stop addition now! =P

Savage Alum
Looked at my study Bible to get the dates that Revelation and Acts were written...The most agreed on date for Revelation is A.D. 95. This is still well before the latest date given in my study Bible of A.D. 70.

And Deuteronomy 10:17 is not confusing to me at all. I find it very comforting that my God is the GREAT God as well as the God of gods...He also says about Himself in other scripture that he is the ONLY God...you have to read the whole book of Deuteronomy not just the one scripture that applies to what you want it too. Try reading the whole Bible -- without reading the Book of Mormon to interpret the Bible.

The FALSE Christian

Huckster is NO Christian. He is not quiet and unassuming about his faith. He does not do the things a Christian would do, and more importantly he does the things that a Christian would not do.

If you can read his actual record, not the one from his political internet site, but his real record, you will see a VERY non religious and poor example of a caring Christian, caring for the people, the community.

To begin with look at his record of pardons. Who he pardoned and what they had done to deserve the jail time justice handed down to them. But with a crooked governor they were mysteriously found to be simple innocents serving time for supposed guilts. Why he pardoned more than the previous 5 governors including the king of pardons, Bill Klinton.

He is shameless on the question of illegal migrants who are here and working jobs that Americans should have, ILLEGALLY.

What, pray tell, Mr Huckster, do you find so desirable in the illegal population of your state.??.

Er, well, they work cheap and fast and make no complaints about working conditions, he replies.

Yes, Mr Reverend Big Mouth, that is just what we know about you, now tell us about the back room dealings you've had that we aren't totally aware of.

No comment. But I am a CHRISTIAN. See this cross here. That is my constant companion, why I even take it into the shower with me. I am a Christian and you can take my socialist, communist, word for it. Symbols, that's what counts, not my deeds and future deeds in the white house, my house to be. Good Morning America, thanks to my symbols I am now the Chief N in charge here.

Revelation written by John about 96AD
Savage Alum wrote:
Revelation, you obviously interpret the "this book" part to mean the Bible, when John actually refers to the book of Revelation. ... And since historically it (Revelation) was written before Acts, are you suggesting we throw out the rest of the Bible? I certainly would hope not. But it's your option.

Revelation was the last book written at the end of John's life about 96 AD. from the Island of Patmos where he was exiled by Roman Emperor Domitian during his reign(81-96AD). Rev 22:18-19 does refer to the Bible, which is the inspired Word of God, the One and only God.

Deut 10:17 is not confusing - it is refering to the One and only God, who is over all the others who pretend to be gods. There is only one God, Jehovah, the triune God, who we see as God the Father, the Son in Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Mormons are great people in the way they believe and practice their faith, but they try to make people believe they are Christians in the historical Biblical sense. 1) we are all sinners based on the fact that everyone came originally from Adam & Eve and their original sin, 2) We need redemption and redemption is paid by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who bore our sin and paid the price for our sin on the cross of Calvary, 3) we need a change of heart which is caused by the Holy Spirit, we then receive Jesus Christ as our Savior and our Lord to the Glory of God the Father, 4) and with this change of heart we strive to live a Christ-like life, not perfect, because we do stumble, but we are promised in 1 John 1:8-10 that if we sin, we are to ask for forgiveness, and He will forgive us.

This is the Biblical Gospel based on the Rightoeusness of Jesus Christ, not our own.

Did anybody listen to the message?
The whole advertisement was about remember the holiday is about Jesus Christ. Hello???? What could be more religious than that? Adding a cross is "crossing" the line? It was a religious message all the way through. I guess the entire MSM watched with the sound off or have so completely taught themselves to ignore religious messages they actually did not hear what Huck said. He should have just said, sure there was a cross. I'm a Christian and Xmas is a Christian holiday. He must have given 100's of "don't forget the cross at xmas" sermons. You know "the cross is on the alter, not a manger", etc. That X in Xmas is, in fact, a CROSS. It's not a commercialization of the word. It's an old CHRISTIAN shorthand that originally was SUPPOSED to remind you of the cross at Christmas.

YLG

Merry Christmas to you all and to all a good night.

Sorry you have to drive so far and back home again tomorrow, yes I read your post yesterday.

By the way the word machine "es máquina", máquina de escribir, I know , you forget those things when you're around TexMex so much. Iremember the gal who said, bájame ese spiderweb.

Or as my dad would joke about TexMex, Has anybody seen my caballo horse running down the camino road with a mecate rope around his pecuiza neck.??.

Turn over the money tables.

FALSE IS FALSE. THE MAN IS TOTALLY FALSE AND AN USURPER OF SYMBOLS.

I, will not participate in the election of this devil in vestments of clergy. I will denounce him as the false and dangerous preacher he is. Huckster is a clear and present danger to this country and to the community in which each of us live.

Yep, I sent it, and then realized my spelling mistake. But I still prefer "maquina del diablo".

Thanks for the reply, but actually I caught a break, and will be returning on Christmas Day. WHEW!!

"bajame ese spiderweb..?" HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Cross is no big deal
Mike is right...could have been a brilliant move not only to get support from Christians but by making the lib media focus so much negative attention may get religious people upset and therefore drum up more votes. So what if Huckabee is a religious person. As a voter you decide. But the media treats the use of a cross like some wild devil move or outrageous attack on individuals. We need more of it....honesty. Some candidates show up for photo ops in churches. Hillary and John Kerry have given campaign speechs from pulpits in churches yet I never heard any outcry about it. So why does showing a cross in an ad create such angst? Six months from now it will be interesting to look back and measure what impact that cross may have had.
Mike http://mtaricani.blogspot.com/

Huckster & IMMIGRATION

Forget, if you wish, his FALSE Christianity.

See what "NumbersUSA" has to say in their latest rating of candidates. Huckster comes in Last place among republican candidates only superceded by the Democrats. He ties with Chris Dodd, the only Dem with any anti immigration policy at all.

Look at what Tancredo did. He threw his support to Romney as the best viable alternative as he said, McCain or Hucklebee should NOT get the nod.

They are both poison on the question of illegal immigration.

No wonder he is the darling, right now, of the Democrats for the Republican nomination. If he gets it, they will attack him like there is no tomorrow.

SteveL writes:

====================
This is the most ridiculous argument I have ever seen on TH. What about all those subliminal messages with the polititians (all of them) standing in front of American Flags? Oh the HORROR! They are using subliminal messages to say they are Patriotic and stand for America....how many have lied while doing that??

Get a life. This is a tempest in a teacup. If this is the best that the opposition can do...attack a candidate based on what may or may not be a deliberate attempt to give a subliminal message, then we may as well scrap all of the adverts and political spots in all media. Sheesh!

How many of us are there....

How many true Christians are there among us.??. Not enough to win a national election.

Who are the true Christians.??. Probably found only rarely even among those on TH where they could be most expected. They are not pretentious and do not often sound their horns.

I, who am baptized and confirmed a Christian, could not qualify as a true Christian, but at least I am a kissing cousin. Among this countries population, even the cousins of true Christians would not an election make.

That is what the Demons are counting on, the crossover vote against raging Christianity. The MSM will have a field day with us if this counterfeit reverend is nominated.

And more importantly, he has shown by his deeds that he is more a socialist than a Christian. Heck, he flunked out of missionary school. I wonder why.??.

Revolutionary for Christianity anyone.??. They did that and still do in Latin America. It's just another form of populism, of socialism. Even Chavez, presidente in Venezuela, says he's a Christian. Anyone can wear a cross and say nice words. Deeds count.

All of this
makes me think of the commandment that prohibits bearing false witness....

Nobody can say with any certainty that Huckabee lied or didn't lie....it is all speculation that fits whatever you Want to believe...and the discussion of it is absolute terms is nothing more than gossip.

But that is what we do best in the US anymore...gossip. Oh...did you see what he did???? Did you hear what she said??? Did you [fill in the blank]

I'd much rather look at a person's record. Actions speak louder than words (or subliminal messages]...Wouldn't it be refreshing if the MSM actually gave us an objective report rather than the pundit-of-the-day spin?

News is a thing of the past. It is all entertainment now.

jmcenanly
Nothing happens by accident in a political ad, and the "cross" was no accident. Everything is carefully crafted to convey a silent message. Why do you suppose George Bush so often appeared at campaign stops wearing a blue shirt and no jacket or tie if not to give the message "I am one of you, blue-collar voters". I was reading someplace that the time of day is calculated to show the sun's rays beaming in a direction most favorable to the candidate's appearance. Bush has typically been photographed from below the level of the stage to give an impression that he is larger than life, powerful. When he campaigned, star filters were used on camera lenses to create an impression of glamor and glitz. Bales of hay and square dance music created an aura of down-home Americana.

Going back in history, FDR used to be photographed giving his famous "Fireside Chats" wearing a sweater rather than a coat and tie---more homey, familiar. Men used to hold a pipe in their hand to look fatherly and wise. Clothing, makeup, hairdo, lighting, background (who has the most American flags?): everything is by design. And that cross was no accident.

Robert
You really ARE an idiot.
We are not supposed to judge another. We aren't supposed to decide what is going to happen to them. that is God's job.But someone that is proclaiming to be a religious leader, and proclaiming to carry the banner of Christianity, we are to judge, or else how would we know a FALSE prophet??

But you can't get around the fact that Gal. 1:8 says "But though we, or a angel from heaven, preach any ohter gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed" How are we to know not to listen to the false prophe, unless we judge what they are saying?

1Cor5:11 "But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat,"
1Cor. 5:13 " But them that are without God judgeth. therefore put away from among youselves that wicked person."

We are told time and again to be careful of false prophets, and teachers. How are we to know if they are false if we don't judge what they are saying and doing??

People always drag out that "Judge not lest ye be judged" but always apply it wrong.
That would fall under 2Peter3:16 "As also in all of hais epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do aslo the other scriptures, unto their own destruction."

Romans: 1;22 " Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools."

Now then. As onceamarine and other have said, Mike Huckabee is NOT acting as a Christian. HE is the one that wanted to run on religion..So it is up to Christians to judge whether he is or isn't speaking true!!!

My thoughts

Re "So what if Huck is a religious person": we don't care how religious he is in private, but we have been burned by a president who politicizes religion and uses it to diss the American people. For example, his Faith-based Initiaves program diverting federal funds to agencies that practice discrimination against non-Christians and that proselytize for Christianity, seeking new converts with our tax money. Using our tax money to have prayer closets built throughout the White House. Using our tax money to employ a religion consultant to speak before 300 groups of pastors, instructing them in how to get their congregations to vote Republican. Then there is the little matter of obeying the voice of God that Bush claims told to invade Iraq. Let the president keep his religion to himself. Keep government secular and clean.

sadly symbolic
Actually this needs no comparison, except a disclaimer on the negative press stories: "welcome to the politically corrected era of the 08 election coverage...hope you enjoy your visit." A Christmas greeting is frightening but Hillary organizing her government funded, taxpayer surcharged universalism is not? Must be the professional wrapping.

Mrs Paddy
I have been talking about Huckabee from his record in Arkansas. I used to live in Arkansas, and as I have said time and time again, I live in Oklahoma, about 20 or 25 miles from the Arkansas border, All of my news on television and radio, comes from Arkansas.I don't get OkCty or Tulsa stations.
Mike Huckabee is a liberal!! He spins his record to suit what he is saying now. He destroyed the conservative base in Arkansas. He was a big tax and spend governor. He was totally for illegal aliens, and anything that EVER came up against them he was always on illegals side.
HE was the one that wanted to run as a religiou leader. He figured the evangelicals would follow him, and so far, a lot of them are, without ever looking at his real record. they read his own campaign site, and see what message he is sending now, they don't go back and dig up his real record.
He wants more and more laws to cover smoking, food, he even wants the federal govt. to set salaries. That is not conservative. And his telling lies about his record, and what he believes, is not acting like a Christian. The bible also teaches that God HATES liars

This man really scares me, as much as Hillary , Obama, or Edwards.

HUCKABEE ABUSING CHRISTIANITY

all of the republicans do that. blame jerry falwell and ronald reagan.

Madison avenue
The so called "media elite" always try to package everything. A candidate is no different from soap to them. Huckabee isn't their idea of a president because he would not fit into their circles. They want to sell as much as possible to everyone and step on no toes. They are so PC that it makes me sick at my stomach to see them "pander" to everyone. Someone needs to clue them in and tell them that people are different and that they should get out of New York and come visit the people that they are preaching to. I personally think the networks should be banned from New York and scattered across America so as to see what the rest of the country thinks and believes. Of course this will never happen but if one of them did move to say, Amarillo, they would become the dominant player in network TV. At one time it made sense to be in New York but not anymore. With the advent of the internet they are sliding into oblivion (see screen writers for a clarification). As for Meredith and Chris, they are so partisan they have become inconsequential to any clear thinking viewer. I personally will watch Chris on occasion just to see how one sided he can be. Tip would be disappointed to see Chris today. As for Meredith she is just carrying on the Katie tradition of feel good pcism. Anyway, Merry Christmas to all.

A word of Warning to Con-persons
You conservatives better get your act together. The majorities we dems got in the Senate & House in '06 will hold in 2008. Not only HOLD, but.... it seems like more than half a dozen republican senators have announced their resignation (Trent Lott being the latest); & other senators (the Alaska guy, Larry Craig) have been bogged down with ethics violations (I'm so glad you guys dropped the phrase "family values" from your talking points. Wasn't working for you).

The point is: dems are gonna build onto their Senate & House majorities. Almost nobody is disputing that. If we elect a dem president in November, then we will no longer need a veto-proof majority to get our agendas & legislation passed. Say hello to universal healthcare, strict govermental global warming emmisions legislation, a higher minimum wage, the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" (I don't think anyone cares about this anymore), a timely withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq (and a beginning draft of the history books on why this "pre-emptive invasion" was such a rash, horrific idea), a possible appointment of Supreme Court justice(s)....

Just be forewarned con-men: You are absolutely on the defensive here. You have the most to lose. We dems will still be in control of the Senate & House no matter what. I'm not being partisan here, just laying it on the line. Good luck to you.

OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!
Mike Huckabee came out and said that Christmas was a celebration of the birth of Christ!

He also said; God bless.

And even worse, the book shelf in the background resembled a cross!

How dare he! He must be drawn, quartered, and hung in effigy in the town square as a warning to all those of faith that they must not display their faith in public in any way!

End sarcasm;

All this is a bit much ado about nothing.

The media (and some posters here) that are making an issue of it are just showing their true colors in regard to religion and faith.

To me the ad was just a public figure offering his best wishes to the people of the US this holiday season. It is refreshing to have such ad's on the air instead of attack ad's like Romney's attack ad against Huckabee.

Merry Christmas, and God bless you all.

Let's Ban all RIGHT angles completely
After watching pundits and atheist bloggers throughout the week recoil like vampires seeing 2 sticks held up at right angles, I think to help the poor persecuted creatures we should consider banning ALL right angles to avoid ever having anything that could remotely be interpreted as a cross.

They are after all, RIGHT angles. Who came up with that name and why? Is that some kind of conservative, subliminal thing going on? I bet those Christians came up with it. Perhaps we should ban all items possessing these offensive angles in favor of OBTUSE ones, sparing them from the ACUTE pain of subliminal crosses. Obtuse seems to fit better with the leftist agenda anyway.

You know Huckabee hasn't stopped with just the bookshelf. I actually saw a picture of his Huckabus touring Iowa. He had the nerve to try to subliminally woo me with crosses hidden in the frame of the window and even large yellow crosses painted on the asphalt. Will he never stop! He's using them everywhere.

I was going to remind Lilly
to find a way to blame President Bush for this huge issue, but I see she did.

Huckabee speaks for ordinary Americans
I think Huckabee speaks for ordinary people, because he grew up in a very ordinary way. Listen to him talk, the man is very bright. He graduated from college in 2.5 years while holding a full time job. His record is outstanding, he has a habit of getting things done, he also was voted one of the best Governors in America - he's well liked and respected throughout his mostly democratic state.

He has specific plans to secure our borders, win the war and honor our veterans, and do away with income taxes and the IRS, institute the FairTax, bring jobs and investments back to America and reduce the size of the Fed Gov't. Plus he will appoint judges who will uphold and value life and traditional marriage. I think he also is a winner who completely contrasts with whatever the democrats have to offer.

Find out more for yourself at http://www.mikehuckabee.com

Moonbat allert!!
They come out everywhere.
Conservatives try and have a discussion about THEIR candidates, and what do we get? Liberal mooonbats as if they have anything constructive to say.

I don't see anything wrong with Mr. Huckabee saying Merry Christmas, or even the cross in the background. But what I object to is his running on being a Christian leader!!This isn't right.
He is running for president of the United States, and that isn't a Baptist position!! It is a government position.
Also if the things he was saying about himself and his leadership as governor were true, it would be different.

We conservatives do have it together. We discuss our candidates, and don't fall for anything that comes along. If they aren't a true conservative, we say so.And from the approval rating of Congress now, I don't think that the dems will stay in the majority. And I don't think we will have a democrat president.

The Hucksters Cross
Seems to me like I remember when viewing the Huckster's Christmas ad, everything in the back ground was dark while the cross/book case was glaringly white. Was the ad made on a set or was it made in soimeone's home. If the ad were made in somone's home the possibility of he cross being white is pretty remote given the other surroundings being dark. On the hand, if the ad was made on a set, the set designers could make it appear anyway the wanted.

In view of the Huckster's previous ad,profiling him as a "Christian leader", and his interview with the New York times concerning Mormons, he and his handlers knew exactly what message they wanted to convey. So, the Huckster doesn't get aa pass on this one either.

Don't know why Christians get so worked up about a cross either. It simply represents that Christ died, when in fact Christ lives! Well doesn't he?

McCain's cross
is not subliminal, and it's stunning.

Oh yeah
Though I won't vote for McCain. I think the ad was wonderful, and he was a true hero of this country!!

Gallagher-huck-Cross
Republicans are ever so tolerant of the Christian right when they need their votes in the general election to support the candidate. But o my gosh when there is an authentic Christian conservative IN the race all heck breaks loose. I am not surprised but disappointed that my suspicions were true. Pander, appease, and dismiss those who want to see their country based on God's wisdom and love. You know-what this country was built on! The hysteria from conservative pundits IS NOT subtle. Evangelicals go to the voting booth, but stay out of politics.

Tired of symbolism
Huckabee won't get my vote. I'm not voting for the head of my church...or any church. I'm voting for Caesar like The Man said. If anyone else wants to run for the church post, I'm CROSSING them off my list.

YOU'RE RIGHT ON TARGET!

? Did the Hucksters ad-men know what they had when they shot it?

You can bet your sweet a-- they did! (even if the set up was originally accidental)

? Is the Huckster getting a lot of mileage out of it?

Unbelievable! Look how often it is played on news shows at no cost to the Hucksters campaign war chest.

? Was it pandering?

Sure it was, and very effectively too!

? Do I care?

Not even a little bit, but I must say I was disappointed in his denial of the obvious.

? Would I vote for him?

Sure! He's my first choice, right AFTER Romney, Hunter, Guiliani, and Thompson in that order.

Why tip toe around? Why not just come out and say what you mean? :-)

I don't want Huckabee
because I think we've had enough Southern gov.'s--20 years of them in the last 31.

And he is not my kind of cons. He may mouth the right stuff about abortion and the gay agenda, but pres.'s have very little to do with those issues.

He was not a fiscal cons. as gov. He was for high taxes, do nothing about illegals, and has his own ethical challenges.

I'm glad he revealed the bigoted MSM for the anti-Christian, self righteous, arrogant, smarmy, and STUPID self-appointed "experts" that they hold themselves up to be.

Maybe now their ravings about religion will be given the same weight as their "support for the troops." NOTHING.

You made one mistake in your post. You said "when there is an authentic Christian conservative", the problem is that Huckabee is only half of that. He may very well be a Christian, but there is no way he is a conservative.

He may have signed on to the FairTax for some media hype, and he may be on the right on gay marriage and abortions, but anyone who taxes and spends as he did, who pardons so many on spurious conversions, and who treats the office of governor as an ATM to fill his own pockets, isn't a conservative in my book.

He is Clinton with a bible instead of bimbos, which makes him a little better than Beelzebubba was, but not much.

If you want a scoundrel for Arkansas, you have Mrs. Beelzebubba running in the other party. Why don't we try something different, like, maybe a real conservative?

Now if I could just find one of those...

Is Huckabee is a conservative?

Amazing foolishness.
Anyone who has watched the video can see that it is a bookshelf.

The people who are throwing a fit over this either don't like Christianity, atleast not in the public square, or they just don't like Huckabee.

Its pure and simple as that.

And for all you sellouts out there trying to say that Huckabee is not a conservative, let me tell you something.

Don't ever call someone who is strongly pro-life, pro-faith and pro-family not conservative.

If you do, then don't ever call yourself pro-life, pro-family atleast.

Huckabee is a true conservative, and if your one of those guys trying to pass off Romney or Thompson as more conservative, then your kidding yourself.

Romney just turned conservative yesterday, and critizing other conservatives for sake of his own gain cast serious doubt on his own conservativism.

And Thompson. Thompson has too many problems to list. Lobbyist. Lobbying for pro-abortion groups. CFR member. Stubbornly supported McCain-Feingold. And the list goes on.

Sorry people, thats not gonna work. Rather if you like him or not, you can't take away the fact that Huckabee is a strongly pro-life, pro-faith and pro-family conservative. All the things we need most right now.

Will.....we don't fear Dems

Hey Will from above... You say "The point is: dems are gonna build onto their Senate & House majorities. Almost nobody is disputing that. If we elect a dem president in November, then we will no longer need a veto-proof majority to get our agendas & legislation passed."...well they did a heck of a job this past year didn't they(hehe). Read George Wills editorial on the Dem record...
http://www.townhall.com/columnists/GeorgeWill/2007/12/23/co ngress_vanishing_act

The Dems are believing their left wing kook base instead of the average American. We understand that a war on terrorism must be waged. We cannot let atrocities go by uncontrolled. We like Prez Bush. We believe in lower taxes...we believe in supporting healthcare as it is today. Want government run healthcare...look at the VA system. If you work in VA hospitals which are 100% government run you know they are a disaster. That's what we can expect. As far as morals go...Clinton getting sexual favors by interns...William Jefferson(Loiusiana) with cash stuck in his refridgerator...Murtha on tape negotiating a bribe with Arabs....Oh yeah...you guys are so saintly. And on Larry Craig...aren't you guys the ones who support gay rights?
Give me a break.

I am a prt of that "almost" you refer to. I do NOT believe the Dems will increase their majority in the US House; in fact, depending upon the GOP district candidates and the Dem Presidential ticket, the GOP could well retake the US House majority in 2008.
As for the US Senate, the GOP was their own worse enemy in 2006, and it appears that they will be again in 2008. The GOP must pick-up the Dem seat in Louisiana, yet they just allowed the incumbent to earmark "pork" for programs to return her Black New Orleans' base voters at US taxpayer expense (if only to vote in the 2008 race), and the GOP still doesn't have a fired-up candidate to oppose Sen Landrieu and her family's poltical "MACHINE" which dates back to Reconstruction! The GOP also needs the Dem South Dakota seat, but it appears they will not contest it out of some kind of "honor" (go figure that in light of Washington b.a.u.) involving the injured incumbent (the good people of SD should demand a US Senator who can work for them effectively, and I'm sorry but the incumbent simply no longer can). All across the 2008 US Senate map, the GOP is looking to defend (just like in 2006), rather than attack!

GOP
If there is a positive to the Huckabee "surge", then it is that the elitist, RINO leadership of the GOP has been reminded of the clout of the social conservatives who Reagan brought into the GOP "tent" in a huge way, and who have provided the GOP with its electable strength. IF the GOP can unite, it will win. If fiscal conservatives bolt to a Ron Paul 3rd party candidacy (as Geo Soros and his minions hope and encourage), then another Clinton will sneak into the Whitehouse with a plurality win.

Golden Questions for Brassy Objection
3. Men are saved by belief alone, by grace, not by works "lest any man should boast" (Eph. 2:9).

Did Jesus become our Redeemer by His belief and the grace of God alone? Or did he have to do something for us? (Incidentally, if God does not bless us for good works, should He condemn us for evil works, like, say "boasting?" Has there been any prophet or saint of whom God has not required more than belief? Point: We are saved by grace through works, Christ's grace and works being our prime example.)

7. God is a mystery. The finite cannot know the infinite. Man cannot comprehend God.

Has God revealed to you that God cannot reveal more of Himself? Then you depend on the word of others? Is it wise to study those who have failed to find Him, and ignore those who have claimed He has revealed Himself?

8. There are no grounds for accepting the Book of Mormon as the word of God since you don't have the original plates.

Why do you and I accept the Bible as the word of God when we don't have the original manuscripts?

TNBoy
You can be as pro-family, pro-life, pro-religion as you want, but when you start taxing and spending like and growing the government, you are not a conservative.

I know the "social conservatives" think Howard Dean was right and it is all "gays, guns, and God", but I contend that there is more to conservativism than the social conservatives, or the economic conservatives, want to admit. If you're pushing free markets and civil unions, you're a libertarian, not a conservative, and if you're pushing social values and a nanny-state, then you're... well, something we don't really have a good word to describe, but not a conservative.

By your standards, both George Bush (the younger) and Jimmy Carter were conservatives. I just don't buy that.

By the way, doesn't all the graft and petty thievery bother you as well? No matter how many pious platitudes Huck might spout, the fact that he was trying to pad his wallet while in office seems pretty non-pious to me. Makes me doubt how seriously he takes the rest of his religion when he can't get the "thou shall not covert thy neighbor's goods" and "thou shall not steal" parts right. (Also seems to have some problems with false witness, but I think my point is clear enough already.)

Sorry
That first paragraph got rewritten and made little sense. Drop the "like" out of the first sentence and it reads much better.

My mistake
Rather, read "like" as "like mad"... I should proof read much more thoroughly.

Christians voting democratic?
Hey Tom,

I have a real problem with Christians voting for someone who will promote murder of the most innocent of us all, the unborn! Do you really think Jesus would be OK with that? If so, you don't know the Jesus I know! The Jesus I know told his disciples "let the children come to me, for such is the kingdom of heaven"!

Oh yea MD, many of the the books of the New Testament were written by "eye witnesses" of Jesus. Let's see, the last time I checked, we are willing to send people to the gas chamber because of "eye witness accounts". In other words, who better to believe than an eye witness, especially when you have several of them?~ Compare that to the cult of Mormonism or even Catholicism for that matter, you know the guys who add to or take away from these original books! No, I'll take the eye witness accounts of the New Testament, read them for myself and take my chances!

Go Huck! I'm beginning to like you more and more!+++ yes these are crosses, three of them and this is a fish <>< , the early church sign for a being a Christian!

Christmas
I like the ad, I don't support Huckabee politically.

I like McCain's ad, I don't support him either.

I think all Christmas cards should have a cross. Why do you think the Star is often portrayed elongated into a cross?

ANN COULTER & RUSH LOSING LISTENER BASE!
ANN COULTER AND RUSH LIMBAUGH ARE BOTH LOSING THEIR LISTENER BASE. They both are an embarrassment to the Republican Party and Americas conservatives. They are becoming more and more out of touch with their conservative base every day. Perhaps they are connected among the political masons. Their ship is sinking and they have lost credibility. Their arrogance and pride precedes their fall.

The Shift in Momentum IS FOR PRESIDENT HUCKABEE in 2008

Mike Huckabee is presidential material and is alone able to defeat Hillary & Obama. I am now convinced that those wealthier donors to Romney's, Giuliani's, and Thompson's campaign have wasted their money and if they continue, are wasting their hard earned money on candidates who do not have voter appeal or substance. As a member of the younger generation, I will tell you point blank, Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson DO NOT connect with us.

ROMENY has run out of gas. He has been the worst investment money could buy. His persecution complex makes him so defensive, weepy and wimpy that he cracks under pressure. His fake, calculated tears make him look like a BIG weaning before now Czar Putin in mother Russia and rest of the world. Romneys negative campaigning reveals his unprofessional desperation and that he is really an unkind angry old man. BOTH Romney's and Giuliani's flip flop past makes them a liability and not an asset for republicans in 2008.

Every time Huckabee is heard his approval amongst Republicans and Democrats increases even WITHOUT major financial support. He is the Republican's secret weapon in the 2008 election. Huckabee's proven leadership can help bring America together as a team.

Huckabee is the BEST candidate because he not only attracts republicans but also democrats to his side without compromising his principles. Both side support is needed to win this election in 2008 and he has it.

WHY HUCKABEE WINS THE NOMINATION and the PRESIDENCY
