Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Texas Republicans will be gathering by the thousands in Ft. Worth on August 31st and September 1st to participate in the first-ever Texas GOP Straw Poll.

Please allow me to refer to this event by its proper name: The Townhall.com Texas GOP Straw Poll. Yes, this website of political punditry, opinions and interviews, not to mention a talk radio showcase of pod casts, audio files, and news and information, is the sponsor and driving force behind this historic event.

I am incredibly honored and proud to be on the Townhall.com team during times like these. Heck, I’m excited to be part of Townhall.com all the time. Because the Townhall.com Straw Poll event is precisely what Townhall.com is all about: grassroots Americans enthusiastically taking part in the process that helps define our nation by its leaders. Men and women from all walks of life, of all ages and incomes, from big cities and the tiniest of towns, standing shoulder to shoulder and boldly voicing their vote with a roar that will be heard all over the United States of America.

It’s the kind of event that sends chills up my spine.

Even before I knew anything about next week’s festivities, I had never been much of a fan of the Iowa Straw Poll. Sure, it’s a terrific fundraiser for the Iowa Republicans, which is certainly good for them. But the formula is predictable and uneventful: the candidate who decides to spend the most money by bringing in as many supporters as they can afford will win. And everyone knows well in advance which candidate that will be.

In Iowa’s case, it was Gov. Mitt Romney. Once his closest competitors saw the handwriting on the wall, for them it was: bye-bye, Iowa, on to the next campaign stop.

With the Iowa Straw Poll, there’s no political drama, no surprises, just a wonderful gathering of good-hearted Republicans who watch the candidate who spent the most money take the prize.

But in Texas, it will be quite different. Instead of delegates who are bought and paid for (and I don’t mean that in a corrupt way), the Townhall.com Texas GOP Straw Poll is open to all Republicans who have previously attended a state or national convention.

In other words, all active Texas Republicans will be able to vote for the candidate of their choice.

The absence of a bankrolled voting process is going to make the Texas Straw Poll a very, very compelling Labor Day weekend. The nation will undoubtedly be watching it very closely because it might just be the first and most accurate barometer of things to come.

Again, I’m quite proud to see this process play out. And I would think that even Democrats would have some respect for such an ambitious effort. Even though this will be a venue featuring the opposing political party, surely Democrat Party officials can appreciate the whole thing, right?

Well, some Democrats have a funny way of never letting us down with their anger, bitterness, and downright mean-spirited view of a political process that has anything to do with us evil Republicans.

In this morning’s Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, there was a half page question and answer feature about the upcoming Townhall.com Straw Poll with the local county party leaders, a guy named Art Brender who is the Democratic Party chairman and the county GOP chairwoman, Stephanie Klick.

The seven questions for the two local political figures were identical and were the typical kinds of questions about what is expected in Ft. Worth, how many people will attend, what message will the outcome send to the nation, and so on.

The contrast between the two sets of answers was simply astounding.

Ms. Klick talked about the “great opportunity for grassroots leaders across the state to come together” and how “Texas Republicans know their voices mean something on the national stage” and what a fantastic way this will spotlight Ft. Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.

But the county Democrat chair answered every question like some hack stand-up insult comic who was the lousy warm-up act for a faded comedian from another era.

Look at the way a supposedly serious leader of one of the largest local Democratic counties in the country chose to respond to some relevant questions about the upcoming Townhall.com Texas GOP Straw poll.

What do you expect from the GOP Straw Poll?

(Art Brender, Democratic Party Chairman): I thought it was a Hot Air Balloon Rally.

How many people do you think will show up and vote?

(Brender): That depends on how many Texans support the botched occupation of Iraq (the war was over in 2003); huge budget deficits; high gas prices; no-bid government contracts; and do not believe in evolution or stem-cell research.

What message do you think the straw poll will send?

(Brender): That the GOP will not take responsibility for the botched occupation of Iraq; corrupt no-bid contracts to Halliburton; high gas prices; failing air and water qualities; skyrocketing utility rates; and corrupt and failed regulation of student loans.

Are you attending?

(Brender): No. I will miss it because I will be…visiting a grandbaby who is far more entertaining than the GOP.

I’m not really sure which part of this sarcastic diatribe is worth noting. Perhaps Mr. Brender’s assertion that the “botched occupation” of Iraq was “over” in 2003 would be a good place to begin.

Do you think Art Brender, Tarrant County Democratic Party Chairman, would have the guts or ignorance to say that to a wife or son or grandfather of a soldier who is putting his or her life on the line for a cause he or she believes in, the war against terror, in a place where terrorists and enemies of the United States are being defeated?

Do you believe that this man really thinks that Republicans in his state are a bunch of “corrupt” people who aren’t capable of taking responsibility for serious matters?

What a gross, reckless, insulting thing to say.

When I read comments like Mr. Bender’s, I’m reminded of why I’m proud to be a Republican.

And I’m definitely proud of the upcoming 2007 Townhall.com Texas GOP Straw Poll.

Let the festivities begin! And let’s be grateful that Democrats like Art Brender won’t be within miles of the Ft. Worth Convention Center next week.

HUNTER FOR AMERICA
Texans understand that our Republic is on the line, the actions of the next president will decide if we remain a sovereign nation. They have been on the front line of the illegal alien inundation and know we must build a fence and enforce our laws. Duncan Hunter is the man to do just that. That is why he won big in the straw poll.

Conservatives can nominate a conservative. All it takes is not acting like sheep and getting herded into nominating a northeast liberal. 49% will never vote for Hillary, only 60% voted last time. Turnout was the difference. Give Americans a chance to vote for someone who WILL secure the border and watch turnout soar. Americans want their government to fulfill its most basic responsibility.

The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.

Texas Straw Poll
I want to thank Mike for shinning the light
on the Democrats in Tarrant County. We are one of the reddest counties in the nation.

Those of you that are disappointed that they can not participate in the first ever Texas Straw Poll, get involved locally.

Unlike other straw polls only Republicans can vote in the Texas Straw poll! To be a delegate
to a state convention you have to have voted in
the Republican Primary. The Texas Straw poll
is designed to test the pulse of known Republican
grassroots activist. These folks are the boots on the ground at election time. They only work for the candidates they believe in! And so should you !

This is grassroots politics at it's finest.

Push Poll
Do you know what a PUSH POLL is? That's when feature is introduced which doesn't even belong on the questionnaire.
Thompson , in my opinion, doesn't qualify to be included. Why not? Because he has not gone through the legalities necessary to Official candidacy. His handlers are trying for Nomination On The Cheap. They believe they are quite cunning. I believe they are being too clever by half.
A candidate of true value would have been Upfront and Honest from the start. Duncan Hunter is a Straight Shooter. Duncan Hunter Walks The Walk.

Something to consider
For those of you who still believe the nonsense, "they hate us for our freedoms". Tell me something, will you?

Why is it that Switzerland has not been attacked?

Think about it.

CLIFF’S NOTES FOR RUDY-3
"The suicidal assassins of September 11, 2001 did not 'attack America,' as political leaders and news media in the United States have tried to maintain; they attacked American foreign policy. Employing the strategy of the weak, they killed innocent bystanders, whose innocence is, of course, no different from that of the civilians killed by American bombs in Iraq, Serbia, Afghanistan, and elsewhere."-- Chalmers Johnson, Blowback, page XV

"The term 'blowback,' which officials of the Central Intelligence Agency first invented for their own internal use, is starting to circulate among students of international relations. It refers to the unintended consequences of policies that were kept secret from the American people. What the daily press reports as the malign acts of 'terrorists' or 'drug lords' or 'rogue states' or 'illegal arms merchants' often turn out to be blowback from earlier American operations."-- Chalmers Johnson, Blowback, page 8

CLIFF’S NOTES FOR RUDY-2
"We assume, moreover, that bin Laden and the Islamists hate us for our liberty, freedoms, and democracy -- not because they and many millions of Muslims believe U.S. foreign policy is an attack on Islam or because the U.S. military now has a ten-year record of smashing people and things in the Islamic world."-- Michael Scheuer (former head the CIA's bin Laden unit), Imperial Hubris, page 165

"The U.S. invasion of Iraq is Osama bin Laden's gift from America, one he has long and ardently desired, but never realistically expected."-- Michael Scheuer (former head the CIA's bin Laden unit), Imperial Hubris, page 213

"Although suicide terrorism is virtually always a response to foreign occupation, only some occupations lead to this result. Suicide terrorism is most likely when the occupying power's religion differs from the religion of the occupied, for three reasons. A conflict across a religious divide increases fears that the enemy will seek to transform the occupied society; makes demonization, and therefore killing, of enemy civilians easier; and makes it easier to use one's own religion to relabel suicides that would otherwise be taboo as martyrdom instead."-- Robert A. Pape, Dying to Win, page 22

"An attempt to transform Muslim societies through regime change is likely to dramatically increase the threat we face. The root cause of suicide terrorism is foreign occupation and the threat that foreign military presence poses to the local community's way of life. ... Even if our intentions are good, anti-American terrorism would likely grow, and grow rapidly."-- Robert A. Pape, Dying to Win, page 245

CLIFF’S NOTES FOR RUDY
"His [bin Laden’s] rhetoric selectively draws from multiple sources -- Islam, history, and the region's political and economic malaise. He also stresses grievances against the United States widely shared in the Muslim world. He inveighed against the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, the home of Islam's holiest sites. He spoke of the suffering of the Iraqi people as a result of sanctions imposed after the Gulf War..."-- 9/11 Commission Report, pages 48-49

"There are a lot of things that are different now [after the invasion of Iraq], and one that has gone by almost unnoticed -- but it's huge -- is that by complete mutual agreement between the US and the Saudi government we can now remove almost all of our forces from Saudi Arabia. Their presence there over the last 12 years has been a source of enormous difficulty for a friendly government. It's been a huge recruiting device for al-Qaeda. In fact if you look at bin Laden, one of his principle grievances was the presence of so- called crusader forces on the holy land, Mecca and Medina. I think just lifting that burden from the Saudis is itself going to open the door to other positive things."-- Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, Vanity Fair, May 2003

"One of the greatest dangers for Americans in deciding how to confront the Islamist threat lies in continuing to believe -- at the urging of senior U.S. leaders -- that Muslims hate and attack us for what we are and think, rather than for what we do. The Islamic world is not so offended by our democratic system of politics, guarantees of personal rights and civil liberties, and separation of church and state that it is willing to wage war against overwhelming odds in order to stop Americans from voting, speaking freely, and praying, or not, as they wish."-- Michael Scheuer (former head the CIA's bin Laden unit), Imperial Hubris, page 8

Beetlebrox -- Foreign Policy
I'm not sure where you are getting your information about foreign policy, but perhaps we all should take a look at what the following have concluded: CIA Intelligence, the 9-11 Commission report results, the Chief of the CIA's bin Ladin unit, numerous foreign policy experts, such as Robert A. Pape and Chalmers Johnson, even Paul Wolfowitz.

They ALL support Congressman Paul's assertion that it is our foreign policy over the last 50 years of military intervention that led to hatred of America. This hatred culminated in the islamo-crazies bombing us.

Every single one of the people I listed above state that it is our military intervention and occupation, even sometimes overthrowing the governments of sovereign nations that has made some people hate us. Is this such a far fetched idea for some to grasp? Apparently so. Are we actually going to sit here and claim that our actions have no repercussions whatsoever? That we can overthrow and occupy whatever country we want, even put in a dictator of our choosing and the people of that country will be just fine with it? Oh, come on!!!

What would WE think, if Red China came into our country and started setting up military bases, not to mention told us that our form of government was no satisfactory and we needed to change to theirs? Would you like it? I, for one, certainly would NOT.

RememberRonaldReagan
I have no idea what you're talking about. I have no problem with the way Texas does their Straw Poll. None at all.

"Hmmm, for a guy that doesn't believe in fighting for something...equating yourself to the man that fought to keep out country together seems a bit odd."

I would ask you to tell us what you are talking about here though. Are you talking about the fact that Dr. Paul thinks we should go after those who attacked us in Pakistan, rather than continuing on with the present police action in Iraq, that had nothing whatsoever to do with 9-11?

How many people I wonder are aware that the invasion and overthrow of Iraq was a plan made during Clinton's administration? Yes, you are supporting a plan that had absolutely nothing to do with 9-11 at all. The plan was developed in 1998 under Clinton and the tragedy of 9-11 was used as the excuse to implement it.

It was called the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998. A link to the text of that Act can be found here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_Liberation_Act

Tired of hearing people complain
about not being able to participate in the Straw Poll. First of all, Texas is not a party registration state. Meaning, anyone can walk into a GOP or DEM primary in March and vote. You don't register in the State of Texas. As an election judge, I get so tired of people coming in to the polls 5 minutes before closing and complaining about being in the wrong spot...when you had TWO WEEKS in early voting to vote ANYWHERE in the county you live in. I know a lot of the Paulistas are complaining that this is an an attempt to keep them out. Now hearing some fred heads complaining. Use this as a learning tool, just about anyone can go to a State Convention who voted in the Primary...either as a delgate or alternate. Next March, after the primary, take 15 minutes at 7:30 to attend your precinct convention. True Grassroots people do that. Not the Johnny come lately. If Ron Paul truly has an Army, we'll see them in March at the primary convention. Just like Pat Robertson did in years past. Just like Ronald Reagan did in '76.

Instead of complaining, which most Paulistas do, do something constructive and learn to be a part of the process. Otherwise, organize your own event with your own rules ... somehow I think even then, there will be complaints by someone about something.

And it is insulting to have the Paulistas think that Ron Paul basically should be on Mount Rushmore. Ron Paul is equal to Abe Lincoln? Hmmm, for a guy that doesn't believe in fighting for something...equating yourself to the man that fought to keep out country together seems a bit odd.

OH NO, here comes the flames from the Paulistas!

Meaning of conservatism

Traditional conservatives have a strong belief in the Constitution as the Law of the Land. We don't want judges to interpret the Constitution to their liking; we want judges who will adhere to our Founders' intent.

We believe in...

- limited constitutional government
- personal privacy
- personal responsibility
- strong national defense
- fiscally responsible government
- individual liberty

Be wary of those claiming to be "conservative" who do not share the long-standing traditional conservative principles. For they are not conservative at all and are attempting to lead you astray.

---------------------

"Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost." John Quincy Adams

"If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will Lose its freedom: and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that, too." --- William Somerset Maugham

@Sam
No, I don't think he can.

Too much of a wonk and very little presidential stature are not a good combo.

Not that I am writing him off out of hand, it is still early. But he is lacking in a number of areas.

However, if it came down to him or the corrupt Marxist, Paul wins everytime.

Cheers!

-Beeb

Lolo, too true
People forget that if foreign interventionism is the hallmark of neo-conservatism then the first neocon would have had to have been Woodrow Wilson and the second FDR.

In the case of both WWI and WWII, Germany was no direct threat to the US. Furthermore, we went into Germany in WWII first, before Japan.

Wilson and FDR made judgement calls on whether it was worth protecting the free west from its enemies.

GW had to make that same call. Future presidents will as well. Bottom line question is; is the west today worth defending from Islamism?

Beeblebrox
Also I agree with you about Ron Paul. The Reps worst candidate is better than the left's best candidate. But I do get tired of the militant RP supporters. They are as bad as the militant left.

Beeblebrox
Careful there. Some bigot is going to come here and call you a neo-con.

noninterventionist policy
I would not characterize Paul as an "old school conservative". For one of those you need look no farther than our friend Pat Buchannan.

Paul is a neolibertarian with some mixed philosophies on things like school vouchers and energy policy that make him less than conservative.

The reason that the US MUST be interventionist with Islamists is that the future of western civilization is at stake. If a candidate does not understand this then he is not qualified to be president. I respect your view that we should not intervene on our own behalf internationally, but I believe this is a pollyanna view that, if allowed to flourish, will lead to the ultimate loss of the West.

Personally, I prefer western civilization over Sharia and yet, Paul fans think that keeping the Islamic wolf at bay is not worth violating noninterventionist philosophy. I just don't agree.

@Ed
You say:

"That's how we got the bumbling, stumbling, stammering President that we have now."

This will be a walk down memory lane but it may help you, Ed, recall how we got the "bumbling, stumbling, stammering President that we have now".

Our choices on the GOP side in 2000:

-Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, former Governor of Tennessee, former Secretary of Education
-Gary Bauer of Kentucky, J.D., former Undersecretary of Education, founder of the Family Research Council
-Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, former Secretary of Transportation, former Secretary of Labor
-Steve Forbes of New York, President and CEO of Forbes Inc., no prior public office
-Orrin Hatch of Utah, U.S. Senator
-John Kasich of Ohio, U.S. Representative for the 12th Congressional District of Ohio and Chairman of the House Budget Committee
-Alan Keyes of Maryland, Ph.D., former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council
-John McCain of Arizona, U.S. Senator
-Dan Quayle of Indiana, former U.S. Vice President
-Robert C. Smith of New Hampshire, U.S. Senator.

Now, in looking at this list, GW does stand out as a qualified candidate. This is not to say he was my first choice, Quayle had much better credentials over all, Keyes would have been great in the bully pulpit, Forbes was super on the economics, and Dole could have been the 1st Woman Pres if she had been able to raise the dough. McCain was even more crazy back then than he comes off now, so he was never a good choice.

Then the Dems offered up a corrupt eco-loon as their candidate and GW was in. The Texas GOP did not force the other GOP hopefuls out nor did they con the Dems into nominating Gore.

ATTN; ALL PAULETTES & STARGAZERS

I like Ron Paul ...he seems like a nice sincere man ...but I looked into my crystal ball and it told me that Paul will not win the Republican nomination and he will never be President ...please save this post and contact me after the election ...

.....Paul stands by the Constitution ...the trouble is that very few others do ...quick without looking it up what is the Third Amendment? ...

.....the average citizen is ignorant of the Constitution ...A Liberal Judiciary has been trashing it for years and the politicians ignore it completely ...I would speculate that without finding emanations and penumbras ...80% of all Federal Laws would not pass strict Constitutional muster if challenged to a constructionist Supreme Court ...

.....Russia under Stalin had a Constitution ...it wasn't worth the paper it was written on ...we're not there yet but we are getting there fast ...and we will get there in warp speed if Hillary gets her foot in the door and gets to appoint two or more Supreme Court Justices .....COLOSSUS

Conservative Disarray
Ron Paul is by and large and old school conservative. Many conservatives side against Paul regarding his stance on the Iraq war. His position is not irrational, but thought out and based upon a noninterventionist political philosophy. We who support Ron Paul find ourselves divided from many with whom we share fundamental conservative principles, and are now rubbing elbows with marxists and pacifists, rabid proabortionists etc.. It's not easy, but the war has divided true patriots from one another. you can label us whatever you want. This is tearing the country apart. Many of my friends and family support the war effort. I see no way to unify the conservative movement in america today.

TEXAS STRAW POLL IS BOGUS!!!
I just got done with a series of e-mails with the Texas GOP, seeing how I get involved. I was told in no uncertain terms that I can't participate in the process because I wasn't a delegate in the previous years. (I just moved to Texas, mind you...)

The TEXAS GOP is more than willing to collect $50 from me, but even that wouldn't entitle me to a vote in the straw poll. Anyone see anything wrong with this?

So Mike Gallagher, I don't want to hear you on the radio this week talking about how "This is a vote of the Texas Republicans," because it is not.

What this is, is a rouse by the TxGOP to collect money, while allowing its insiders to force another Presidential candidate down our throats. That's how we got the bumbling, stumbling, stammering President that we have now.

I'll guarantee the Tx GOP one thing -- whoever wins the Texas Straw Poll will not get my vote in the Primary. And I hope like hell that they come looking to me for contributions!

Interesting linked site. I wasn't aware of it. Thank you.

Congressmen - >> POTUS
I known that only two sitting senators have moved to the White House in the history of America. I'm thinking that only Garfield moved from the House directly to the White House. He was assassinated shortly thereafter.

So, for Paul to make history, he needs to get elected and then survive longer than Garfield (which was only 8 months if I recall).

Sorry, a little dark humor there.

A bone for you Paulites: If Paul is nominated I will support him. This despite my belief that he is not credible on the war on Islamists. But because the Dems are even less credible, he would be the lesser of two evils on that score.

He also holds several other positions that I can't agree with whatsoever including his drug policy and his record on education. The NEA, one of the more insidious unions out there, rates him at 67%, not good for a libertarian. His general outlook on homeland security is not my cup of tea but he is pro-family, pro 2nd amendment, and would vote to drill in ANWR.

He is a bit of a mixed bag for me but miles ahead of any Democrat out there.

This is a scorecard site that is worth perusing:

Beeblebrox writes:
To you insulting Ron Paul fans

****
I agree.

Those of you who support Ron Paul do not gain more supporters by flinging insults at those you wish to gain support from.

People are turned off by insults and you could actually do more damage to the candidate you support by being insulting.

I can understand your desire to get his name out and make others aware of him. I can even understand trying to get his point out which he may have not been able to get out thanks to poor debate time or lack of media coverage.

But in this case not all publicity is good publicity. Many people these days are looking for an inspiring leader. Insults do not instill inspiration.

@ frbill
I cannot agree that the "occupation" was botched. Could it have been done better? Obviously. By Brender's (and your definition apparently) anything that could have been done better has been "botched". Thus, your post was botched, Brender's response to the survey was botched, the moon landing was botched, in fact, the founding of America was botched.

Sheesh. People simply do not realize that Bush, Rummy, and the generals are not omniscient. They went in with a "light footprint" strategy (largely, I think, to appease the UN and the left who thought the US removal of Saddam was overkill) and that didn't work as well as was anticipated. They gave the strategery time to play out and then ultimately changed to a different MO. The surge was a retooling of the "occupation" and a brilliant one at that. Today, our "occupation" is no longer "botched", at least by my definition.

This war is asymmetrical and of a kind that has never been fought before in the history of mankind. People who think that Bush and Co. could have foreseen that the light footprint concept was not going to work have no idea how wars are fought, especially in this overly-politicized day and age where every Democrat out there violates the "debate ends at the water's edge" principle of yesteryear.

We now know that the Dem party will act in as treasonous a way as necessary to advance their own lust for power. A GOP president needs to recognize this going forward.

Those of us in other states are watching
Based on my research into the candidates my support thus far is for Huckabee with Tancredo a close second.

The others have in one or more ways lost my support or have yet to earn it.

It will be interesting to see if Ron Paul can even place well in Texas though. I'm not a supporter of his, but if you can't rally support in the state which elected you as a Representative then you have to wonder about his electability in the general.

As a 10 term congressman Ron Paul is too inside DC for me. A couple of terms is one thing but after 10 terms, or to put it another way well over 2 decades, in DC politics a person becomes more a professional politician than a Representative in my book.

To you insulting Ron Paul fans
I forgot to mention that Ron Paul's major negative is the people that get on boards like this and insult the rest of us. Being the shallow person that I am, even though I agree with many of Paul's positions, I tend to think that Paul attracts like minds. I am not one of those minds.

a. Paul is no Lincoln. If anyone thinks that then they are, to put it bluntly, delusional. Lincoln was a statesman, Paul is not.

b. Paul is TOTALLY WRONG with regard to the single most important issue of our time, that being 9/11 and the war against global Islamic Fundamentalism.

c. He does not have the stature I want in a President. I want someone who will command an audience. In short, I want as close to another Reagan as I can get.

Bender's Iraq comment
Please, Mr. Gallagher, Mr. Bender's comments were bad enough without your distorting them: He was obviously contrasting the "botched occupation" since 2003 with the (successful) war that ended with Saddam's overthrow in 2003. (And, while I am on your side, I admit there is a grain of truth there -- as well as a lot of exaggeration.)

Nope, can't have that...
"I think all conservatives should appreciate the efforts of Paul. He is not presidential material, IMHO, but his intellectual wonkishness and principled stands should help the rest of the field understand that Republicans appreciate reasoned debate, ideas, and a rational approach to governance."

Can't have a president that is principled and intellectual, that has reasoning skills and ideas, as well as rationality.

I certainly hope that comment was tongue-in-cheek, Beeblebrox. If not, it's the dumbest one I've heard in a LONG time.

Beeblebrox yoru name sais it all
Ron Paul must win or we get another clown who distracts us from seeing who really holds power.

I want a Ron Paul vs. Denis Kucinich election.

That way Americans can have an election in which the candidates actually care about America, Americans, and the issues.

Ron Paul = Abe Lincoln?

Dirt Farmer: To paraphrase another Texan, "Ron Paul, I served with Abe Lincoln. I knew Abe Lincoln. Abe Lincoln was a friend of mine. Ron Paul, you're no Abe Lincoln!"

Cheap shot, I know. But the trouble with you Ron Paul posters is that you always push it over the top.

Is he a good man? Certainly. Is his (and your) involvement in the political process healthy? Absolutely. If Ron Paul, by some miracle, captures the Republican nomination will I vote for him? Yes.

But he's no founding father. And, for very good reasons, he's not likely to win (or even place or show) in the Republican nomination process.

Ron Paul
Ron Paul is not presidential material!? Why not!? If Abraham Lincoln were running for president today, people like "Beeblebrox" would no doubt be saying that he's not presidential material. Go figure!
So, we need a strong communicator with charisma, do we? Wouldn't the ideal candidate for the "bully pulpit" be an Adolf Hitler type? We have enough demagogues running for president already, especially among the Democrats.
Ron Paul is like a reincarnation of one of the Founding Fathers. He has come along none too soon.

Ron Paul has a place- just not in the WH
I think all conservatives should appreciate the efforts of Paul. He is not presidential material, IMHO, but his intellectual wonkishness and principled stands should help the rest of the field understand that Republicans appreciate reasoned debate, ideas, and a rational approach to governance.

As a paleolibertarian, I don't agree with some of Paul's stands nor do I think he would be the ideal candidate for the "bully pulpit" as we need a strong communicator with charisma.

Still, I admire Paul's acolytes for their fervor and dedication, and it is my hope that the rest of us can get behind our candidates with equal vigor.

the comedy of jackasses
When I saw Brender's comments, I was reminded that my fellow Texans are a reliably conservative electorate, and that the Democrats have been so marginalized that their "leadership" has been reduced to angry Kossack clowns still bitter about Florida in 2000 and Tom Delay in 2003. And they are never so funny as when they are upset.

Meanwhile, I went to the Texas GOP website to learn a bit about qualifications for attendance. One must have been a delegate or alternate to one of the last four state conventions (2000, '02, '04, or '06) or either of the last two national conventions. And there is a registration fee ($50 with online pre-registration; $75 onsite).

I last attended a convention in 1998, so I (fond of Hunter, leaning Fred, watching Huckabee) am not eligible. Besides... Fort Worth?? This is only a straw poll: why should everyone have to show up in the same hall? This state is huge, and regional venues, such as Houston and San Antonio, could have been arranged so that travel wouldn't be so burdensome for most of the eligible attendees, especially on a holiday weekend.

Straw Pol
Thompson is on the ballot. My wife and I plan to participate. Based on my conversations with activists who are going, Thompson will do very well. The only candidate with an organized effort to gain delegates is Ron Paul. He has buses and has been sending mail to delegates.

freedom is popular
Please Ron, win this one so the Republican leadership can discount it as another irrelevant poll.

It's all about Values and Character
I am going with values and character so I am going with Mike Huckabee. Romney flip-flopped too much on family issues and he helped destroy family values in Mass and their schools. Not much for Giuliani (he is wrong his family does matter), McCain is just too old, or Thompson if he ever declares himself as running, because if you take a vow when you are first married and break that vow and then remarry what's to say you are not going to do the same to America when you take your vow as President. If you can't keep your family together how in the world are you going to keep this country together. It is all about values and character. We need more republicans with a little backbone who do not eat their own when something does not make the Extremists' in our party or leftist media happy.

Here is intrade site for Huckabee

What do you think? I can;t spell!
You cannot deny, that Iowa had a good view of the candidates. Vote with your heart but rule with you head.

Are we to Vote for who you like the most,
or A TV, fictional star who does not know the issues, A man whose libertarian ideas allow freedom with limited responsibility considered a right and constitutional.
Or, the one whose record shows, strength of character, intelligence, selfless service, honor and integrity. That is Mitt Romney

Let me get this straight
Mr. Brender is so clueless he thought the event was a:

"Hot Air Balloon Rally"

"botched occupation of Iraq".

He thinks that the number of people who will vote in a straw poll is dependent on EVERYONE being of like mind on the

"huge budget deficits"

Even though, relative to the GDP this is a lie, he is also evidently is unaware that his own party voted for the current spending bills that cause deficits and that his own party wants to spend more than Bush or the Republicans in the future.

"high gas prices"

He is also apparently so uninformed that he is not aware that the high gas prices we experienced toward the beginning of the summer were due to refinery capacity issues. Who is responsible for preventing refineries to be built or for regulating fuel blends?

"no-bid government contracts"

Mr. Brender also seems unaware that Haliburton and Bechtel are the only two American contractors capable of doing the work they do unless we outsource to foreign corporations. Is that his preference?

"do not believe in evolution or stem-cell research.

Some of the GOP candidates believe in evolution and some don't. The fact that evolution is something you "believe in" tells us all we need to know about Mr. Brender. As for stem-cell research, I doubt that any of the GOP candidates "believe in" it. They might support it if it doesn't involve killing another person but to have faith in it would not likely be something you would find a GOP candidate doing.
What message do you think the straw poll will send?

Mr. Brender is a child and his comments prove it. It is a sad state of affairs when the GOP has to play on the same field as sophomoric dolts like this.

Texas straw poll
It is my understanding that Thompson WILL be on the ballot. However, I think his support will be under-represented because I am involved with his support group here and I would guess that at least 75% of our people are literally grassroots people who have NEVER been involved in politics before, other than voting, and therefore are not eligible to vote in the straw poll. I checked with my people to see if any of them qualified to participate in the straw poll and found only two who had previously attended a state convention and both of them had health problems that prevented them from traveling at this time.

Because of that, I do not think the ultimate straw poll results will be representative of Republican voters as a whole in Texas.

Interesting info.
I switched from a Democrat to a Republican long, long, time ago. I have met hundreds of Republicans who switched as well because of what the Democrats stand for and do. But I have never met a Republican who switched over a became a Democrat. Have You? Right now I am an Independent, due to what the GOP Leaders in last Congress and George Bush has done in violating GOP Core Principles. However, I will vote Conservative. Newt Gingrich is the best of the Lot, but does he carry too much baggage. I don't think so and I like his ideas and how he would carry on with the debates - you ought to check it out on humanevents.com. Charlie was right on. Mindless Parrots = Demonrats.

Sraw polls may be interesting...
...but they sure are goofy!

TEXAS STRAW POLL

.....Is Fred Thompson on the ballot? ...can he be written in? ...if not then the Texas straw poll is worthless .....COLOSSUS

Vote Ron Paul
You liberals are all corrupt.

Iowans can not be bought!
The reason that Iowa is a good spot is that Iowans cannot be bought.

Come on neighbor, do not be a common neighbour. We care as much as you do for the man or woman who gets our vote. If we cannot respect them they do not get our vote.

Money can never buy the heart of any man or any woman. Don't make us laugh. We did no sign any contract, we made only one promise to vote according to our heart.

Looking forward to your Straw Poll!

Not exactly pay to Vote in Texas
In this "First Ever" Texas Straw Poll, a candidate can't simply ship people in to vote, or pay for votes. Only Republicans that have been delegates to previous Party Conventions are elegible. I believe each delegate is invited with a control numbered registration form. A delegate must present his record number to become credentialed and be able to vote. (at least that's how I got mine)

It really should be interesting. So far I don't think anyone has spent a dime campaigning. We'll see how it goes.

Is Texas Another Pay To Vote Deal?
The thing I didn't get about the Iowa Straw Poll is that to participate, you had to pay $35 to vote. So, candidates pay people to vote for them by busing them in and paying their $35. Do I have that right? Is that the way it's done in all straw polls, like Texas, for example? How does that possibly translate to "winning" anything? Also, the number of voters Mitt Romney purchased in Iowa is slightly more than the number of students that was in my high school in 1972. I don't get why everyone falls all over themselves acting like these straw polls mean anything.

Tarrant County Texas Democrats
The backbone of Tarrant County Texas Democrats, by the way, are comprised of employees of those "evil" defense contractors, along with the Democrat county government PATRONAGE employees. Tell me about no bid government contracts and corrupt government, Art.

Mindless Parrots
Mindless Parrots = Liberal Democrats

AAAARGGHH, Warren,
Your links don't work!

Typical liberal response
I have been going to the "Kos" site lately and the comments by Mr. Bender are straight from the "Kos". That is pretty much all they have to say. Throw in "Police state medicin ... socilized medicin ... single payer tax me to death medicine" and that pretty much summs up the whole far left platform.

I have very good friends who are from that side of the fence. We are still very good friend because we have agreed to just not talk about politice together because we can not say anything nice to each other about it. I mentingo terrorist and they says "There are no terrorist" I say war thye says "Bush's war". I say 13,000 Dow and they say "The economy is in the tolet.

It is compleet and total doom on the democrat side now. It is aginst democrat law now to say anthing good about a republican ... unlest you are Joe Leiberman.
