Poll
Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

This is it. The final days, the home stretch. We head into the weekend and then to the polls on Tuesday for what might just be one of the most important elections of our lifetime.

I don’t ever remember feeling so tired.

I’m tired of hearing people try to make excuses for people like John Kerry. I’m tired of hearing pollsters and pundits project a big victory for Democrats this Tuesday. I’m tired of hearing the vicious, bitter attacks on our President’s character by the likes of people like Keith Olbermann, a pseudo-intellectual Manhattan elitist who appears to be having the sort of on-air meltdown that the fictitious movie newsman Howard Beale of ‘Network’ had. I’m tired of the mainstream press relishing every bit of bad news out of Iraq or about the economy, while virtually ignoring all the positive stuff.

Most of all, I’m just tired of fighting.

But I’m not close to stopping. The stakes are too high. There might just be enough people on the fence that could be persuaded into doing the right thing on November 7th. And so I’m going to try.

Like it or not, political parties are defined by their most prominent members. We Republicans have had our share of headaches and embarrassments. Neither party is without its gaffes.

But at the end of the day, I’ll put the prominent Republican leaders up against the Democrats of 2006 any time. And we’ll all be able to agree that there is a world of difference between the two.

Just consider the people who help to make up the heart and soul of the Democratic Party: Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Michael Moore, Keith Olbermann, Alcee Hastings, Marion Berry, Rosie O’Donnell, Barbara Boxer, and Barbra Streisand.

Compare that list to some of the more notable Republicans: George W. Bush, Denny Hastert, Bill Frist, Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney, Sean Hannity, Rudy Guiliani, George Allen, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Dick Cheney, John Cornyn, and just about every country music singer in America.

C’mon, it’s not even a close call. Face it, the Democrats are a bunch of angry, bitter, cynical people with no direction, no strategy, and certainly not a whole lot of positive things to say about the USA. The Republicans just feel like, well, the grown-ups.

A war is a very grown-up thing. It might not be as exotic as worrying about what global warming is going to do to snail darters in Antarctica, but terrorism threatens us all. Personally, I’d prefer to take my chances with the ozone over a bunch of angry fanatics who think chopping off my head or blowing up my airplane will send them to heaven.

We have to act like grown-ups. It might seem intriguing to fret about diversity, but our children and our children’s children are counting on us to keep our country safe. And we are in way better shape with the grown-ups in charge than handing over the keys to the car to Ted Kennedy.

I was fascinated by the way Americans reacted to John Kerry’s incredible slur against our troops this week. Sure, there was anger and passion and plenty of hurt feelings. But do you know what didn’t really occur? Hate. That blind, red hot hate that so many Democrats have for honorable people like George W. Bush.

It appears that Democrats made a decision to make our President the focal point of most of their smear campaigns. They figure that if they can attack Bush while running a campaign ad for Congress, voters will be inspired to vote for the Democrat.

Well, as he once famously said: Bring it on. I’ll stack his integrity and guts up against most of these folks on the left any day of the week.

I’m just not willing to believe that voters will be so gullible as to let the Dems win next week.. I can’t accept the possibility that we’ll allow the hateful, vengeful Democrats to gleefully attempt to turn our country into an unholy mess for the next couple of years. No matter what anyone thinks of President Bush’s decisions, I just refuse to think that we’re ready to stomach a party that might just very well try to impeach our commander-in-chief during wartime if they take control of the House and Senate.

Like most Republican leaders in America today, I believe in my country. I have faith that we’ll do the right thing next week. I am proud of our troops, I pray for our President, and I love the United States of America.

We’re a nation that has witnessed a lot of miracles. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll see one more this coming Tuesday.

Dear Liberal dialog
YOU ARE NUTS!!!! We really can't be bothered to hate you liberals. It is just too much work. I spend my time and energy on hating the EVIL that thinks that the only (guanteed) way into Paradise is to blow up women, babies, old people, and other helpless people.

Your terror of us is just silly. We don't hate you at all, we just disagree. Why do you insist on turning disagreement in to hatred?

Liberal Dialog
Stop it. Just stop it. Now. Go seek professional help. Your paranoid delusions are getting the best of you. Whatever chemical imbalance you have, whether self-induced or not, needs to be addressed by a professional before you commit a violent act.

Lib Dialog:
Wow! I'm kind of surprised at the hyperbole of your post. We've had some knock-down-drag-outs, and some pretty reasoned discussions, but this one really surprised me.

The line I found most interesting was "Conservatives will start killing liberals with their guns". Do you really believe that?

First of all, I've never seen anything that even comes close to indicating that kind of malice toward the Left, not only here but in the real world.

Second, if that thinking is typical of those on your side of the aisle, now I know why you guys are so anti-gun. If you're convinced people will shoot each other over this stuff, it then becomes:

A. A matter of self-preserevation,

and

B. A way of controlling your own base instincts.

In which case I'm glad conservatives believe in gun ownership, because:

A. We believe in law and order, and wouldn't misuse guns or commit murder over politics,

and

B. You guys must be so out of control that it's a good thing you don't own guns.

Anyway, food for thought.

The frustrated liberal
That is one angry and frustrated liberal

Yeah no hatred here
Republicans are kind of pathetic. You've made a celebrity of Ann Coulter, who's only gift is articulating hatred. And the comment's made by regular townhall readers always take it a step further.

Conservatives are adept at saying the sun is shining when it's clearly night time.

Democrats are America?
If Democrats are America then why are they trying so actively do destroy it and everything it once was? From activist judges where they don't even come close to dispensing justice to free flowing borders to rights for terrorists. It's ridiculous. It definitely has to stem from a lack of morals and values in liberals. I don't know how else to explain it. If the liberals in this country think Americans are going to tolerate the possibility of one day having to listen to Islamic prayers broadcast over multiple speaker systems then their sorely mistaken. I spent a year overseas and I'm extremely glad I'm home and I never have a desire to ever leave the United States again.

What is this paranoia?
This truly is funny. This is really a suicide bomber's mentality - if you don't agree with us you want to kill us. Is that who we want running the government?

Bryant69: Yes, you're right
We conservatives should hang our collective heads in shame for Ann Coulter's popularity -- of course, you could have made your comment on Coulter's column instead of Gallagher's, but hey, what's a little detail among friends, right?

Obviously Coulter's vile and hyperbolic. We should definitely model our commenatators on more restrained examples, like say... Al Franken. Ah, what wit! Who can forget such knee-slapping humor like "Rush Limbaugh's a Big, Fat Idiot"? Man, that one gets me rolling in the aisles every time I hear it! The intellectual prowess! The biting observation! The subtle turn of words!

Tears are flowing
Mike,

Come on, you're going to make me cry.

First of all, look up the word honorable in the dictionary.

Second, there's plenty of "grown-ups" on all sides...Reps don't own the market.

Third, I wouldn't worry about the election...if the numbers aren't quite right, they can always be fixed.

Lastly, I love America too, but I'm more for the America that is willing to care for it's people first and not how a culture treats women half way across the globe.

J

Is this a grown up thing to do?
Here, in two paragraphs that I just copied from a NYTImes story, is why everyone, including die-hard Republicans, should vote Democrat this year.

"Investigations led by a Republican lawyer named Stuart W. Bowen Jr. in Iraq have sent American occupation officials to jail on bribery and conspiracy charges, exposed disastrously poor construction work by well-connected companies like Halliburton and Parsons, and discovered that the military did not properly track hundreds of thousands of weapons it shipped to Iraqi security forces.

And tucked away in a huge military authorization bill that President Bush signed two weeks ago is what some of Mr. Bowen’s supporters believe is his reward for repeatedly embarrassing the administration: a pink slip."

Yes, that's right folks. Like the rest of us have been trying to tell you, George Bush and the Republicans don't want anyone to find out about all of the corruption going on over there. Ever wonder why the Republicans have refused to investigate the 9 billion dollars that are unaccounted for over there? Hmmmmmm?

Phylo out.

Tired
Oh Mike,
After Tuesday you'll have plenty of time to re-invent your tired act. Your mad, white, racist guy schtick is is a tired one. You may still have a quorum of mad, white, racist men, but who's gonna continue paying for that demographic?

Grownups?
Call me an old fashioned Reagan Republican. But grownups don't spend more money than they have. Grownups don't put their children in debt rather than make hard choices. Grownups like Colin Powell believe you don't send troops to war without overwhelming force and a viable exit strategy. Grownups take personal responsibility for their actions and mistakes rather than blame the other party or the media for low approval.

And here on Townhall, grownups don't respond to idea they don't like by calling the other person names, but rather counter with better ideas. But hey, I'm old fashioned.

Rocklin
Funny how you place white and racist together two times in two sentences. Usually, the person throwing down the race card is the true racist. What did Mike write that was racist, exactly? Do you have any comments on the content of the article?

bryant69
Please advise, when did the expression of a contrary opinion become hate? In your opinion, are there varying degrees of hate? If I disagree with you but keep it to myself, is that hate? If I disagree with you and tell only 1 person, is that as hateful as if I told 100 people? If I offend your sensibilities about my position on abortion, is that more or less hateful than if I irritate you about guns? I really need to brush up on the nuances of your hate hierarchy if I am to truly appreciate your position on current events. Oh wait, I can probably get the same from the nearest kiddo in training pants.

Jake:
You'd BETTER be concerned about how one culture halfway 'round the world treats its women: they want nothing more than to bring us down and put all OUR women under the burka as well. You really want that for your mother, wife, sisters or daughters? As for "caring" for our own, gimme a break. Any of our poor would be considered rich as Croesus anywhere in the world.Darn near half of our population pays little to no income tax so are supported by the rest of us in that WE pay their taxes for them, not to mention all the other "services" granted by liberals who have less problem spending other peoples' money rather than their own for all this gravy-how much more "care" do you want?!?

Halp us jon carry...
Those guys, together with their banner, should have been reassigned to GOP campaigning duties here in the US...

Sean Hannity's B*stard Twin?
This fellow's column has about as much substance as Sean Hannity's radio show. Yes, the Democrats ae much worse than the Republicans. But we have to have better arguments than what Mr. Gallagher is presenting.

Goofy...
Really Sue, don't you think they just want us out of their country??

I agree with you about the welfare system in this country...and you prove my point, there's better things to work on right here in our own country. But, the RICH who want more money than they can already spend know that they can't make money on piddly little issues like the welfare system. They need to create problems elsewhere and then pretend that they are fixing them...and remember that also comes out of our (middle class) pockets. Are you seeing the picture?

I would much rather have a tax buck go to feed some out of luck schmuck here in our country than to put a bullet in my son's gun so that he can shoot some kid in the middle east.

I really think there's more to it then we are being told.

J

Just where are these "grown ups"
According to Gallacher, "The Republicans just feel like, well, the grown-ups. "

Well Mike, your "grown up" Republican Congress has been guilty of aiding and abetting Bush's anti-conservative agenda for its entire six years. This includes record spending growth, record budget deficits, record numbers of special interest earmarks, record numbers of no-bid contracts to favorite cronies, record numbers of guilty pleas for congressmen and their aides, record numbers of illegal immigrants and record trade deficits. Then there are the expensive and inefficient new LBJ-type programs such as No Child Left Behind, and Medicare Drugs. Then there is the record spending and record stupidity associated with the Iraq debacle -- the bull of the Bush Administration's white elephant herd.

We understand when young kids have trouble accepting grim reality in place of their fantasy beliefs. It is less understandable, and certainly less acceptable, when "grown ups" such as the President and Vice-President insist on living in their fantasy world that everything is going OK or according to plan in Iraq. Their clinging to an unrealistic, outmoded slogan such as "Stay the Course," is not the mark of of a rational adult or "grown up."

Nor can we can't trust your "grown up" Republican Congress to provide either guidance or oversight to this wacky White House. Your "grown up" Republican Congressmen have forgotten that their first loyalty is to the country and their constituents, not to their Party.

By the way your "grown up" Vice-President said "F___ You" to a U.S. Senator. That was the first time in recorded history that such language was used on the senate floor. Very mature.

To quote from James Stewart in the movie "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" -- "If this is the mess that the "grown ups" have gotten this world into, maybe we ought to turn the government over to the kids for awhile."

Red Hot Hatred of John Kerry?
No, I don't hate the man who called me and all my comrades in VietNam war criminals. I do have trouble putting a label on how I feel toward him though. The words 'disdain', 'disrespect', 'disgust', 'contempt', 'scorn', 'despise', and 'repugnant' all come to mind; 'hate' alone just doesn't do it. I feel many of the same emotions toward any and all - including some former friends - who supported and continue to defend Kerry.

Boozer1000
What are you drinking?...I want some of that!!

Man am I glad some people in this country are paying attention.

J

Wake up and face reality
Upfront, I am a conservative, former military who feels that Bush and the current Republican Congress have both betrayed the goals of "fiscal conservatism", "smaller government conservatism", and the Republican's 1994 Contract With America. Like George Will, Bob Novak, Pat Buchanan, Paul Weyrich and other old-fashioned conservatives, I opposed the Iraq war before we invaded. Even so, I never in my worst nightmares figured that the Bush team could mess it up this much. What arrogance and incompetence.

You rabid supporters of Bush and the Iraq war need to face reality. It’s over. Over 60 percent of Iraqis want to kill our soldiers. Rumsfeld is already talking about amnesty for the Iraqi insurgents who have been killing our soldiers. Boy, that statement has got to be a real morale booster for troops that face deadly attacks every day. And Bush hasn't got a clue of how to "win" this war. That is why he's got the James Baker commission coming up with a face-saving way for him to "Cut and Run" after the election.

I am willing to bet that most of you that still support Bush's idiotic "Stay the Course" Iraq war strategy have never spent a day in uniform. For example, I didn't see anything in Gallagher's bio to indicate that he was ever in the military. Bush and Cheney worked very hard to get out of service in Vietnam.

I also notice that while you unrepentant Bush-backers talk of this Iraq mess as a “noble cause” that we must be willing to sacrifice American lives and dollars for, nearly all of our political leaders, whether Republicans or Democrats, seem very careful not to sacrifice their own family members.

Neither of Bush’s daughters volunteered for the armed forces. Neither did Cheney’s daughters. Nor has Bush’s nephew. I haven’t heard of any close relatives of Bush appointees or Republican Congressmen that are serving in Iraq. If more than a dozen close relatives of our 535 congressmen have volunteered to risk their lives for this “noble cause” I would be very surprised.

In fact the only Senator that I know has a son in the military is Biden, a Democrat who thinks that the war was a big mistake. Although Jim Webb, another Democrat, was against this war from the start, his son left a prestigious Ivy League college to enlist in the Marines and is presently in Iraq under fire. How many Congressmen's sons and daughters are safely ensconced in their Ivy League colleges drinking beer, chasing girls (or boys), and going to frat parties. George Allen’s 18 year old daughter sure hasn’t enlisted to help us “Stay the Course.”

This is the issue we should be discussing. I liked the Contract With America's ideas for balanced-budget and term-limits amendments. However, I would add another -- if the President and Congress take us to war (whether declared or not), all Congressmen's sons and daughters of military age would be immediately drafted into a combat arms unit and sent to the warzone. The same would be true of all Presidential appointees.

amen to boozer1000
I was working up a great response to this article until I got to those 2 posts. I was a Republican until the religious right started to take it over. Now I vote the person, not the party. When the lockstep republicans are leading us over a cliff to our ruin, someone needs to yell stop. Thats what Democrats and Independents are doing.
Thanks for articulating the issues so well.

theblankline
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, I can't claim to be infallable. When I lived in Texas I voted for Bush when he ran against Ann Richards for Governor. So I was a Bush supporter before most people had even heard of him. We all make mistakes. (My wife keeps reminding me of my Bush votes.)

I think that Bush has been the worst President in my lifetime. That is a pretty damning statement given that, in my life, we have had the only president to resign (Nixon) and only the second president to be impeached (Clinton). We have also had such losers as LBJ and Carter. Yet I think that Bush beats them all by a mile.

I did vote for Kerry for President last time. That was the first time I ever voted for a Democrat for President. However voting for Democrats is getting easier -- This time I am voting for Democrat Jim Webb for Senate. Webb is such a super candidate; former Marine (2 purple hearts and a Navy Cross), award winning author, Emmy award winning journalist, Asst. Secretary of Defense, and Secretary of Navy under Reagan.

Comparing James Webb to George Allen makes me wonder why this race is even close. The Washington Post describes George Allen as “a mediocre senator whose six years of undistinguished service do not justify rehiring”. Other recent news articles have referred to George Allen as “Bush Lite” or “Bush without a Brain”. Now that is scary.

Senator Allen has shown his loyalty to his Party and President by voting with Bush 97% of the time – obviously not a very effective check or balance to the powers of the Executive Branch as intended in the Constitution. This President needs as many checks and balances as we can muster.

RorD, RorD, RorD
Everytime I walk up to the voting booth, LIVID about Rs and ready to vote D, I take a deep and my heart moves me to R.
This Tuesday, I'll be reaaalllllly livid!
Cheers to grown-ups!

Well done, Boozer
Boozer has the perfect rebuttal to this "grown-ups" column. The GOP leaders that Gallagher touts are unrivalled in toadying, arrogance, corruption and mendacity and MUST be swept out.

But the one point I will agree with him on is the unimpressive nature of the Democratic leadership. We are faced with actively harmful, incompetent Republicans, and ineffectual, unimpressive Democrats. And with the poisonous political atmosphere in the air, I despair of actually getting quality candidates of either party in office. Why would a good, decent, wise person ever subject themselves to the torture chamber of a campaign?

(But some of his choices for "heart and soul" are just perverse. Olbermann is eloquent, but a loose cannon. I don't think anybody on the left really takes Barbra Streisand seriously, and nobody elected her to anything. And Marion Berry? Hey, you missed Al Sharpton! Come on...)

Here's an equally impressive list of "heart and soul" Republicans: Ted Stevens, Tom Delay, Mark Foley, Jeff Gannon, Bo Derek.

Derek
A basstard twin could only be a male clone.

No Easy Solutions
Anger when used constructively can be a good thing, but used in revenge is disasterous. I pray good conservatives, especially those of you who are angry, to use it to our benefit and not to our destruction. Whaterver we may think about those we elected to represent us, or of their action or non-action, we have to stick together and come back fighting for better days. My hope is that people like McCain, Graham and Warner are paying attention and come back to the conservative base.

I am not speaking here to the Libs trolling around because I don't think we can win their hearts or minds, but, those of us with similar views need to come together and deny them the chance to bring in socialism (communism) that they believe will solve the problems of the world.

Don’t trust children with guns…

Mr. Gallagher many thanks to you for reminding us that we need grownups in power. We understand that adults have the ability to see past the immediate. They know that their policies have consequences past tomorrow, and can even affect future generations. They have some ethical standards and a sense of honor.

Children live for the moment. They are not expected to be concerned about next year. Their only concern is what’s happening now for my gratification? They must be taught what is right. They naturally hate authority, slander those in control and even try to pit parents against each other. They are incapable of seeing the bigger picture. They are children.

Your analogy is a good one. Democrats have put their political ambitions over the security of this nation. Their public criticism of the Commander in Chief in time of war has benefited the enemy and hurt our troops. They have hindered his efforts to protect this nation at every turn.

They have leaked and published classified information that damaged the security of this nation. They have perverted the use of the courts and given constitutional protections not only to non-citizens, but sworn enemies of this country. These things undermine the war effort. These things used to be characteristic of traitors, and they still are among Americans.

If you don’t like the war then use your vote to change the policy. Don’t undermine the war effort. Suppose the anti-war folks get their way. Who will they blame when the terrorists come after us again on US soil? The children are not to be trusted with authority. All of us will pay the price down the road.

When I became a man and saw things closer to my father’s perspective, he gradually became a much wiser man in my eyes. In other words I was a foolish child and could not understand, nor see the purposes in my fathers methods. Even so, George W. Bush has taken decisive action against the worldwide threat of modern day fascism. He has appointed judges who can restore sanity to the courts.

There will come a day when freedom loving people will thank him as they do President Reagan today. We dare not trust children who do not understand the threat with control of our security and our military.

See you at the polls.

Townhall actually hosts gullible Dem-vot
"I’m just not willing to believe that voters will be so gullible as to let the Dems win next week. I can’t accept the possibility that we’ll allow the hateful, vengeful Democrats to gleefully attempt to turn our country into an unholy mess for the next couple of years."

Sorry Mike, but Townhall actually hosts such morons who would vote Dem, such as CINO Bartlett.

The secular left are the aggressors
Despite theblankline's pathetic whinge about the "religious right" taking over, until they did, the GOP were just an echo, not a choice, which is why they were in the minority in Congress so long. It was only Reagan and Gingerich that made the party a majority party, by providing a real alternative.

And the "religious right" are not the ones attacking. Rather, it is the secular left that is actively expunging all traces of Christianity from public life, such as "in God we Trust", prayer in schools, nativity scenes and crosses, pushing gay marriage and abortion through unelected activist judges ... The "religious right" are merely defending and in some cases trying to restore what had been the status quo since the foundation of the USA.

when did this site become dailykos?
I agree with Handy. Who is hitting that "flag as offensive" key? Is it "offensive" when someone posts something you disagree with?

I would have liked to see what was in that post that many reacted so strongly to. But I can't, thanks to some JERK who had to have it taken down.

Conservatives are supposed to believe in free speech! If that post was so lame, even "offensive", it should be allowed to whither and die by its content. Unless it was full of vile profanity (which is rather hard to believe on a site that barely lets you say "darn"), LEAVE IT ALONE!

Sure, respond to it, post a different opinion, make fun of it, whatever. But DON'T remove it!

You better all vote for your RINO!
I am posting this again here--
You people that live in states with a RINO in office better well get out and hold your noses and vote for your liberal RINO!!
I don't care how much you hate people like John Kerry--or Lincon Chaffee or Mike DeWine or even Rick Santorum. Yah I know--Rick Santorum?? He isn't no RINO! Well if you look at his voting record he's voted with Kerry, Durbin and Kennedy on many votes. Which has no doubt hacked-off many conservative 'likely voters' in Pennsylvania. And he's kind-of creepy if you ask me. But you conservatives in Pennsylvania just absolutely need to get out and vote for the creepy guy. The stakes are too high for the Republican party to lose. Look at it this way--here is your chance to make a sacrifice for winning the global war on terror. The Defeatocrats will likely try to yank out troops out of the central front in this war in Iraq, they will be staging kangaroo courts endlessly for the next 2 solid years, they will get rid of our tax cuts, they will throw the entire country into a recession by slamming businesses, they will cause gas prices to go way up to around $5 a gallon due to Iran running amok in the ME and if you think that the Republican led Congress has been on a spending spree the Defeatocrats will be spending like there is no tommorrow.

Sheesh!
For crying out loud--don't even bother trying to argue with liberals--they are too far gone to waste your breath trying to convince them or sway them.
What is more important is to get out the vote!
In case you have been living in a cave, the whole democrat strategy this election has been to get us conservatives to stay home. The country is 60% conservative! There is no reason to lose either the House or the Senate unless there's a ton of people who sit home due to them listening to the media and buying their total garbage.

Shameless plug!

FIGHT FOR FISCAL SANITY

“TAXCUT AND SPEND” REPUBLICANS have absolutely no fiscal responsibility or accountability! The last time we had a balanced budget and pay-as-you-go legislation Bill Clinton was President and the Democrats instituted these Congressional controls. So much for Bush mythology on who has conservative values. Furthermore, Bush’s supply-side economics has not conserved our nation’s economic future.

SUPPLY-SIDE ECONOMICS… has sold our kids and grandkids down the river!

George Bush’s $3 trillion dollar tax giveaway to the rich has been a disaster for average Americans. Supply-side (trickle-down) economics is a bogus theory promoted by those who benefit from it. In a mature capitalist system, supply side never rules, it’s always the demand side of the equation that governs growth and well-being. Think about the 1930s Depression, General Motors had plenty of supply, but demand evaporated.

Previous U.S. recessions have been cured with only $200 billion in tax cuts targeted to the middle class, because the consumer (the great middle class) spends that tax cut and primes the economic pump. But George Bush has raised the debt that our children and grandchildren will have to pay from almost $6 trillion to almost $9 trillion for this current recovery, which is uniquely without wage gains, and which has shrunk the middle class that makes America strong and great.

Corporations (the supply side) are now loaded with cash, but there’s no place to spend it because they don’t see any demand. So many corporations are using that cash to buy back their stock – WOW, isn’t supply side wonderful in how it fulfills America’s needs? As the rich-poor divide increases, we’re headed toward previous shining examples of trickle-down economics: South America of the recent past and feudalism in the Middle Ages (South America and feudalism also had no wage gains).

Too Late BrianR
Already been there.

The lefties make some strong points about what jerks the GOP are, and how foolishly they acted. But Gallaghers point is make the comparison to the people who will be in power if the D's win. Its enough to freeze your blood. This will be some election. Get out early, there will be lines at places in times you never ssw before.

Why Conservatives Are So Angry
controlcongress.com

Debt Matters

We elect congressmen and congresswomen to represent our interests. We vote for self-described fiscal hawks who favor less government. But all we get is:

• A Congress that represents the lobbyist-money-changers in Washington
• A near $9 trillion debt
• An explosion in government spending that puts Liberal tax-and-spenders like Lyndon Johnson to shame

Integrity Matters

The moral lapses of the Clinton administration were, of course, distressing. We voted for self-described conservative representatives who claimed they would do better. But all we got was a never-ending chain of scandals ranging from sex crimes to bribe-taking to gambling promotion.

Each is driven by a combination of greed, power-lust, and arrogance. Of course, mistakes do happen. But even when individuals are caught red-handed, they refuse to take responsibility. All that results is finger pointing and excuses from congressmen hiding in rehabilitation centers. Misbehaving congressmen should be removed—period. Are we supposed to look up the definition of is again?

Immigration Matters

We are a country of laws. If you don’t like a law, change it. But a government that intentionally refuses to enforce select laws is weakening the whole “rule of law” and breaking its most sacred pledge to the governed.

Some employers are using illegal immigration to drive down wages and eliminate hard-working Americans from their payrolls. And of illegal immigrants gangs run roughshod over our communities, bringing with them:

• Violence (and the threat of violence)
• Crystal meth and other illegal drugs
• Prostitution
• And perhaps terrorists

Yet Congress and the White House repeatedly turn a blind eye in exchange for big business campaign donations and lobbying loot. The best they’ve done is pass a lame fence bill that covers no more than 10% of the problem (and they aren’t even obligated to follow through on that much). Yet many existing laws remain un-enforced.

What Should We Conservatives Do?

The Democratic Party is not the answer. It is at best beset by the same corruption as the Republican Party, and at worst completely at odds with our values. The only practical solution is to challenge Republican incumbents who fail to:

• Vote against bloated spending bills
• Demand immigration reform
• Hold their fellow members to the highest level of ethical conduct

We must stop giving money to any candidate who represents special interests over our interests.

Adults vs Children
I agree with your hope that the adults in this country look around and decide that the Republicans are serious and the Democrats are frivolous. Until the Democrats take this war seriously, they are just children playing in the sandbox.

However, your insistence that the adults will prevail is not necessarily true. I realized that most of the American people are stupid (or easily-led or ill-informed, take your pick) and will fall for the most ridiculous BS when they re-elected the Boy President, Bill Clinton-another example of Democratic children.

Dems make Bush their plan
Here in Michigan we have a do nothing Senator (Stabenow) who has to her credit the sponsoring of one bill to name a building. Otherwise her claim to fame is a private deal with a Canadian administrator to halt Canadian garbage to our state, a deal that can fold at any time because it has no weight in law. "Garbage" Stabenow has run her campaign mostly on that she is not Bush, and the terrible thing is that she is ahead in the polls.(Although not too surprising because Michigan is a democratic state with votes driven by the unions.)

It's called a volunteer military, see?

ValiantForTruth ---> Amen!
I was wound up pretty tight but you have said most of it.

These Liberals who adore John Kerry and Nancy Prlosi as their role models are getting very apprehensive of this election.
Think maybe they are skeptical of THEIR OWN polls?

WHAT America do you love?
>>We have to act like grown-ups. It might seem intriguing to fret about diversity, but our children and our children’s children are counting on us to keep our country safe. And we are in way better shape with the grown-ups in charge than handing over the keys to the car to Ted Kennedy.

That was grown-up?

After reading that piece of drivel, I think I'd probably choose any second grader off my daughter's playground over yourself to "form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity..."

Hopeful
I WOULD choose any second grader over the rats we have in DC now. But i don't have that choice. Its R rats or D rats. Choose i must, or watch the special interests take control. They ALWAYS vote, its their livelihood.

This is the GOP's First Team?
Some of the more notable Republicans:

George W. Bush: coward, mama's boy, multiple business failure, whose only political skill is scaring people.

Denny Hastert: dullard, puppet of Tom Delay, probable pederast, manipulator of highway funds so the road just happens to pass lands he speculated in.

Bill Frist: inept parliamentarian, sadistic killer of cats, corrupt liar regarding his shares in the family business, charlatan who overrides the diagnoses of a dozen doctors on the spot from what he sees on video.

Rick Santorum: general-purpose idiot who still claims Saddam had those WMDs, that gay marriage leads to man-on-dog sex, and who can't be bothered even to live in the state he's supposed to represent.

Mitt Romney: carpetbagger, facilitator of very ugly public works contract corruption.

Sean Hannity: jpossessor of a handsome but empty talking head.

Rudy Guiliani: philanderer who looked good for a week because he consciously located his "command post" for good photo-ops, not to get the job done.

George Allen: unrepentant racist, thug, employer of thugs, dope. Face it: if not for his famous father, he'd be selling cars in Anaheim.

Kay Bailey Hutchison, John Cornyn: somehow, they found the only two nonentities in all of Texas and put them both in the Senate.

Dick Cheney: the worst prominent American of our time. That's worst as in most evil and also worst as in worst American; he's the first public figure I've ever heard of who actively worked to subvert the Constitution from the day he declared his candidacy (he's from Texas) to today.

just about every country music singer in America: careful, Mike: are they really on your side, or did they see the way the Dixie Chicks got mau-maued and decide to keep quiet?

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO FOR
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO FOR GOD, FAMILY AND COUNTRY

IS TO VOTE!!!

Not just when you have the time to do it, but at every opportunity that is given to you to do it.

If you do not vote, you are leaving your, and your families, fate in the hands of others. A low turnout on Election Day means that a fervent, well organized minority point of view can easily win and push this nation in a direction it might not want to go. The Iraqi people recognized this when 12 million people (almost 80% of the registered voters) faced threats of death from just such a fervent “terrorist” group and voted for democracy; a concept they didn’t quite understand but knew that its liberties would be far better than the tyranny that such a minority group would establish, given the chance.

So when you vote, make sure you know for what you are voting, and the repercussions that might result from an uninformed decision. Find time to study the issues and be committed to them before you choose. Know what groups have opinions and beliefs similar to yours and see what their recommendations on the issues are. Conversely, see what the opinions of those groups you oppose are and study their recommendations, then cast your vote wisely.

Sorry, Mike, I ain't Buyin' It
Every day as more and more Lawbreaking Illegals come streaming across the Border; Every time the Coyotes or the Mexican Army or both fire at our Border Patrol; Every time another American loses his job because some scumbag lawbreaking illegal offers to work for less. I am reminded that our Republican Party has been in power for 6 years and has done nothing to stem the flow of illegals. RIGHT NOW there are thousands crossing the border and NOTHING is being done. They have not only NOT SECURED THE BORDER they have done absolutely NOTHING about the employers who choose to hire these JOB THIEVES over American Family Men...and Women, They give us little strokes like pass a law for a fence which will hold back the flood of illegals about like Canute held back the tide. No sir! My vote will not be wasted; but neither will it be for a RINO.
The Democrats will waste the 2 years over impeachment proceedings, investigations, hearings and if the Republicans get their heads out of their a$$ and get rid of the Democrats in Republican clothing, they will most likely be able to reclaim their seats. If not, with the way they were schrewing us, we were headed for what 6 years of Democratic Rule intendts anyway.

krystalbird
You are right. It is a volunteer military and they all enlist with the knowledge that they could be killed. But some of us feel that we have an obligation to our soldiers not to waste their lives on stupid, mismanaged wars.

FYI, editorials in the latest editions of the Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times say Rumsfeld has 'lost the support and respect of the military leadership,' and that he ought to be replaced. These newspapers and out military leadership have never before challenged the competency of our civilian leadership. This didn't happen even during Vietnam.

Marion Berry
Wow, Marion Berry. What's so scarey about Marion Berry?

http://www.house.gov/berry/biography.shtml

"United States Representative Marion Berry has represented the people of Arkansas' First Congressional District since 1997."

Limerick on Texas
Thank you, Limerick, for acknowledging that no one else in Texas is a nonentity, even while mis-labeling our two GOP senators. Otherwise, your ignorance of Texas is forgiven.

Except, however, for your remark about VP Cheney: while it is true that Cheney lived here briefly while employed in the private sector, prior to that he was a longtime resident of Wyoming, serving as their only Congressman for five terms in between Executive Branch appointments under Presidents Ford and GHW Bush. The Constitution requires that Electors cast their vice-presidential ballots for someone from a different state than their presidential choice, necessitating Cheney's return to his previous state of residence. (Actually, any of the other 49 would have done, but he was raised in Wyoming, so he returned to it.) He is no more "from Texas" than I am from Wyoming.

And if Denny Hastert is a "probable pederast" -- my, what a standard of evidence you must have -- then what does that make friend of NAMBLA Nancy Pelosi? And we're not talking about the Marlon Brando Look-Alikes here.

One of the huge differences between the Republicans and the Democrats is that, when the former find someone among them of low character, we remove them from office; when the latter find the same, they re-elect him as often as he cares to run, and they elevate him to their leadership.

Yes, the Democrats will someday again achieve power. But it would be irresponsible in the extreme for Americans to make that day next week.

And if the Republicans manage to retain their majorities, the self-congratulation should last no longer than it takes to realize that the weak among them must be replaced in the next primary cycle -- and the leadership well before the next Congress convenes.

Seriously, FlyingFin
Can you please pepper like every third article from now on? It doesn't need to hit every one to get exposure, and every third one will tick us off a whole lot less.

You're right, George 35% Bush IS a prominent Republican. And so is Rick GonnaLoseHard Santorum! And Denny NotMyJob Hastert! And Dick FnckOff Cheney! And George The Racist Allen! What an all-star line-up! The Republicans are gonna win *FOR SURE*!

The irony is priceless!

Gallagher's Plea
Obviously he wants to convince those who usually vote Republican that it's their best bet on Tuesday. The need to convince? Because he knows, as so many of us do, that the present administration and too many Republicans in Congress have let down their faithful constituents.

They have been arrogant in their willingness to ignore the wishes of those who elected them. Yet we are expected to show our loyalty in spite of it.

The messages I'm hearing are: "Sure, they've made mistakes, but you'll be much worse off if Democrats take control of Congress."

So who got us in this quandary where Mike Gallagher and many others in his field have to beseech us to vote Republican?

A majority of us can take some of the blame. If we are too lazy, too complacent, to call or send "real" letters to our representatives to let them know what we want, insist upon, we are part of the problem.

They could be receiving thousands of contacts every week...there is strength in numbers.

Waiting til election time is too late.

Boozer1000 . . .
claims to be a former Republican. Yeah, sure.

He's just another drive-by poster, throwing out the leftists' rhetoric, hoping some will stick.

Notice that his posts are all all general in nature, no specific solutions (other than hatred for Republicans and the Bush Administratiuon). To quote from the Army Times (a civilian newspaper) Op-Ed page to "prove" a point is dumb.

Then again, the leftists always do confuse opinions with facts.

MyOpine -- Get a Grip on Reality
If you had ever spent time in the military you would know how significant those editorials in the Military Times papers are. No matter who owns these papers, they are the weekly bibles of military news. Those editorials mean that the miltary leadership has lost confidence in the incompetent civilian leadership of the Bush Administration.

You and other rabid supporters of Bush and the Iraq war need to face reality. It’s over. Over 60 percent of Iraqis want to kill our soldiers. Rumsfeld is already talking about amnesty for the Iraqi insurgents who have been killing our soldiers. Boy, that statement has got to be a real morale booster for troops that face deadly attacks every day.

Bush hasn't got a clue of how to "win" this war. That is why he's got the James Baker commission coming up with a face-saving way for him to "Cut and Run" after the election. Even the most hawkish Neocons who got us into this war, Richard Perle and Kenneth Adelman, now say that it is time to leave. Its time to wake up and smell the coffee.

Kimberly . . .
must I remind you that the Democrats invented mud-slinging? (I think they got the Cy Young Award this year!)

And Kim-babe, there's nothing in your post about how the Democrats will make my country any better. All you posted was that you don't like Gallagher and thugs.

You know, Kim, maybe if the Democrats would try to present a cogent policy regarding Iraq and the WOT, your side might get more votes. Or is that strategy too radical for the socialists?

DavidMac
I don't claim to be a Republican. I claim to be a fiscal conservative who is interested in a smaller, more limited federal government. Obviously there has not been much overlap between the two during the last six years.

I have been against Bush and the Republican Congress' anti-conservative agenda for the last six years. Their agenda has included record spending growth, record budget deficits, record numbers of special interest earmarks, record numbers of no-bid contracts to favorite cronies, record numbers of guilty pleas for congressmen and their aides, record numbers of illegal immigrants and record trade deficits.

I also opposed Bush's and the Republicans' expensive and inefficient new LBJ-type programs such as No Child Left Behind, and Medicare Drugs. Like George Will, Bob Novak, Pat Buchanan, Paul Weyrich and other old-fashioned conservatives, I opposed the Iraq war before we invaded. Even so, I never in my worst nightmares figured that the Bush team could mess it up this much.

I wholeheartedly supported the Republicans' Contract With America in 1994. Given that we have had a Republican President and Congress for almost six years, I wonder whatever happened to the Contract with America’s promise for cleaner government (yeah, right) and a balanced budget amendment. How many Republican Congressmen that were elected in 1994 are still running for re-election despite the Contract with America’s 12 year term limits pledge? We conservatives were conned by Newt and the Republicans in 1994.

In my state you can't register party affiliation. However, in other states I nearly always registered as a Republican. But you are right, I sure don't consider myself as a card carrying, vote-for-anything Republican. I think that the Republicans need to spend some time in the wilderness so that they can figure out who they really are and who they represent. Right now they represent K-Street lobbyists.

Bush has been such a terrible President that I am going to put my faith in the Constitution and the founding fathers. A Democratic Congress will provide some checks and balances to this wacky White House.

Maybe Bush will finally start vetoing some of the Pork-laden spending bills if they have Democratic earmarks instead of Republican earmarks. FYI, back in 1987, President Reagan vetoed a transportation bill because it had 152 Congressional earmarks for PORK projects. In 2005 Bush signed a transportation bill that contained nearly 6,500 Congressional earmarks for PORK transportation projects.

These PORK projects included nearly a half billion dollars for the infamous two "Bridges to Nowhere" in Alaska.

Bush sure is no Reagan. With his LBJ-type federal programs such as No Child Left Behind and Medicare Drugs Bush reminds me more of LBJ, without the good parts. Bush's Iraq war also reminds me eerily of LBJ's Vietnam misadventure.

Thank you for your compliment of saying that I am not a Republican. In my view the Republican Party does not stand for anything.

Boozer

By what authority do you speak on behalf of 60% of Iraqi citizens?
Do you speak for al Qaeda too?
You certainly seem to be trying to help them!

Can't you do ANYTHING BUT PARROT MSM PROPAGANDA?
Are you devoid of personal thought!

Take your wet diaper back to DailyKos and get it changed!

Well Dad, maybe they didn't have the Army Times and Navy Times back during WWII. They sure did during Vietnam and they were the weekly news bible for the career soldiers or "lifers". The anti-Rumsfeld editorials would not have been written if there was not already significant anger in our uniformed military leadership.

About a year ago, the British military in Iraq hired local Iraqi pollsters who found that about 40 percent of Iraqi's felt that it was OK to kill occupying soldiers. About a month ago a more recent poll found that over 60 percent now thought that it was OK to kill American soldiers. You should recognize that our occupation is not going the right way. How can you possibly believe that the people who could not sucessfully establish a new government when there were very few insurgents, can somehow now establish a working government during a civil war?

The Iraq debacle is not our armed forces' fault. They defeated the Iraq military as requested. However, you don't fight wars just to say that my army is better than your army. That makes as much sense as a little kid saying "My daddy can beat up your daddy."

Nations fight wars to achieve political objectives. Remember von Clausewitz's "War is the continuation of political intercourse by other means," also "War is a political instrument”. Bush's premature statement of "Mission Accomplished" indicates that he did not understand that the Iraq war was ultimately a "political" mission not just "military" mission.

Iraq was a failure of the Bush administration's political decision makers. There was never a clear statement and debate of our political objectives and the plan to achieve those objectives. The reason for the war has continually shifted from one erroneous “fact” to another. According to two recent polls, 45 percent of Americans still believe that Saddam ordered the attacks on 9/11. Hell, even Bush and Cheney admit that there is no such linkage.

Boozer1000 . . .
one last time: The Army Times is a CIVILIAN-run paper, not the official newspaper of the US Army!

That paper was very useful when I was in the Army, but it did NOT reflect official government policy, and was, in fact, diametrically opposed to many programs and policies.

And to quote the Op-Ed page as "calling for Rumsfeld" to resign has about as much weight as if you called for Rumsfeld to resign, i.e., no weight at all.

And if Boozer is still lurking near.
The ONLY THING IT IS POSSIBLE to prove with a poll is that some people are stupid enought to trust someone pretending to garner unbiased information.

In case you are really as naive as you pretend to be.
Any poll taker can slant questions so the answer is exactly what they want to prove.

We had a magazine. I forget the name right now.
No one but officers subscribed to it and it was published by a civilian publisher.

I don't think it would be appropriate for our Government to publish a news paper anyway.
That would certainly end up being propaganda, but then, so is MSM.

AND if you don't stop putting on such a good dumb act you are going to convince me.

MyOpine and David Mac
I am very aware that these newspapers are "privately" owned. The point that I was trying to get across to you is that they are very "connected" to US military leadership, and that this anti-Rumsfeld editorial would not be run unless it reflected what top US commanders are already thinking. Many recently retired generals and colonels have already gone public with their criticism of Rumsfeld. This type of public conflict between US military and civilian leadership has not happened since Truman fired MacArthur. That time it was only one general going public; this time it is lots of generals.

I actually feel sorry for you confirmed supporters of Bush and his Iraq "Stay the Course" slogan. You are going to be quickly disappointed. What do you think James Baker is going to come up with? Don’t you realize that Rumsfeld’s talking about amnesty for insurgents means that the “Stay the Course” approach is being jettisoned? The Neo-cons,like Richard Perle and Kenneth Adelman, who talked Bush into invading Iraq are now saying it was a big mistake and that the Bush Administration has been incompetent. Every Republican Congressman who wants to get re-elected is abandoning this “bumper sticker slogan” that masqueraded as a strategy.

Your undying support of Bush's "Stay the Course" slogan (it is not a policy, plan, or strategy) and his overall Mideast policy baffle me. You probably are part of the 45 percent of Americans that still believe that Saddam ordered the 9/11 attacks despite what Bush, Cheney, and all our intelligence agencies say. A recent survey indicated that about 25 percent of American adults think that the Sun orbits around the Earth on a daily basis. Poor Copernicus and Gallileo. A sizable portion of the US believes that the Earth is only 6,000 years old. But you are welcome to believe what you want.

As for Bush's anti-terrorism approach, I personally think that we should have tried to cultivate allies in this global struggle instead of going out of our way to tick people off at us and thereby potentially to encourage even more terrorists. But then that's just my opinion.

More poll results that you won't believe -- Based on the Pew Global Research opinion polls, from 2000 to 2006 there has been a major decline in our country's favorable ratings in numerous countries. In the UK it decreased from 83% to 55%; France from 62% to 43%; Spain from 50% to 41%; and Germany from 78% to 41%. These were our friends and allies. Initially we had over 30 coalition partners in Iraq; now I think it is about 8. Canada is threatening to pull its military out of Afghanistan.

In the Muslim world it is much worse. From 2000 to 2006 Indonesia went from 75% favorable to 38%; and Turkey from 52% to 23%. I used to do consulting in the Middle East, but there are many places where I won't go anymore because it is too dangerous for Americans.

After 9/11 nearly all countries supported us, including the French. On 9/12 a French newspaper's headline was "Today we are all Americans." In my view terrorism is not the kind of struggle where we need to go out of our way to create more enemies.

It is past time that we ask ourselves “What is our position in Iraq and where are we going?” What have we actually accomplished? Iraq does not have a stable government, capable of controlling the growth and operation of terrorist organizations within its borders. In fact many of the Police and Army units that we have trained are attacking each other as death squads, or attacking us with IEDs.

Without continuous outside military support, the current Iraqi government would quickly fail . A recently leaked U.S. Intelligence report concluded that our involvement in the Iraq war has actually caused more people to become terrorists against us. There is absolutely no chance for a democractic government there. All that Bush is currently hoping for is some form of stability. That stability may require another strongman like Saddam or an autocratic theocracy like Iran. Those are the "best case" goals that our soldiers currently are dying for.

As a country, we need to do some serious thinking about how we resolve the Middle East mess that Bush has gotten us into. “Stay the course” is not a winning option.

Eze 37:9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind,

Pray for the win. Pray for the wind. And pray for the windage.

demo's need to grow up
Growing up, in my opinion, means doing what one needs to do instead of what they want to do. In order to do this, a person has to be aware of what is really going on in the world and why. To achieve this awareness, one has to look at the world with a clear mind and a belief system devoid of lies. If someone believes they have been meeting their needs by lying and criticizing people in the way of them getting what they want, they have a real hard time growing up, because they are building their life on an unstable foundation. Eventually, their best-laid plans will come crashing down, often on top of people whose needs depend on these ungrownup people. The leaders of today’s Democratic Party seem to have all the symptoms of immature people likely to turn to drugs and/or alcohol to medicate the pain that they will surely inflict on themselves and, likely, all of AMERICA if the demo’s gain control of our government. Compound this with the fact that the Democrats really have no clear, rational plans of what they will do if they do take over the land where our children have to live. Moreover, this is a very dangerous time for that to occur.
