Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The reporters crowded around the American evacuees from Lebanon, thrusting their microphones and cameras into their faces, eager to hear what they had to say. It’s been estimated that there were as many as 25,000 Americans in Lebanon when the bombing erupted, so clearly there was a story to tell. It certainly couldn’t be easy to airlift 25,000 people out of a country ravaged by war and violence in a short period of time, but these Americans would undoubtedly have a gracious message for their country, right?

No, that’s not the way it is anymore. Grace and humility are traits that seem to be in short supply, particularly when being applied to the big, bad United States of America.

The first interview I saw was with a man who was livid with the U.S. Embassy. “Every time we made it to the Embassy, they told us ‘we can’t help you, wait for a phone call.’ I mean, it’s a joke!”

Another American complained, “A week of nothing but misery and traveling from one town to town to find safety for me, for my pregnant wife, for my child...and for what? I don’t think it’s about the two kidnaped soldiers anymore. I think it’s more political. They’re trying to get political gains at this point.”

Yet another grateful American, this time, a woman: “It is positively ridiculous that it took the U.S. so long to come and get us. We were very scared and I blame George Bush and the government for dragging it’s feet in helping us get out!”

Here we go again. Another catastrophic event, another wave of “blame the United States.” Sounds familiar, no? Only this time the event wasn’t a hurricane or a flood, but ruthless terrorists in Lebanon attacking Israel and Israel fighting back.

First of all, it’s pretty difficult for me to wrap my brain around the idea of taking a summertime vacation to Beirut. Personally, I prefer Disneyworld. Or maybe a nice Caribbean cruise. But Lebanon? You take your pregnant wife into war-torn Lebanon?

Okay, so for whatever reason, a bunch of Americans decide to explore all the vacation benefits of Lebanon. Suddenly, bombs start flying and they want to leave. Immediately. Well, the world doesn’t quite work that way. Evacuating thousands of people from a country that is home to Hezbollah terrorists who are firing rockets into Israel is just as complicated and difficult as it sounds.

Amazingly, we’re not even going to charge these ungrateful evacuees for the free trip home. Despite a federal law that mandates reimbursement to the government if an American has to be evacuated from a foreign country, the State Department backed off after a big firestorm of objections were heard from critics of the Bush Administration. It’s estimated that a plane ticket from Lebanon to Cypress, where many were taken, costs about $200.00. Thanks to the stench of political correctness and cowering bureaucrats in Washington, we taxpayers now get the honor of buying the Lebanon evacuees their trip home.

Once more, we’re confronted with the ugly image of people shirking their personal responsibility and wanting to blame everyone else for their decisions. If you make the choice to take a holiday in a place like Beirut, it sure seems like there’s a possibility that you might not enjoy it when the terrorists get antsy. At the very least, you might want to hold your tongue and not complain, gripe and moan about your country when it comes and rescues you.

These people likely learned a thing or two from the reaction to flooded New Orleans. Sure, there were some people who couldn’t leave when Katrina was on its way. But let’s face it, there were many people who became victims because they made a choice to stay in New Orleans despite being warned to get out of town. Their bad decision became the government’s fault.

Just once, I’d like to see an American on TV express some appreciation for their country during times like these. What a joy it would have been to turn on the television and see an evacuee from Lebanon say something like, “Boy, was I ever dumb for deciding to take a vacation in Lebanon. But thanks to the United States, I’m now safely sitting in the Baltimore airport and am I ever grateful. Thanks to the brave men and women who helped rescue my family and me, and God bless America. It sure feels great to be home.”

No, that wasn’t what these people said. Not even close. Their sense of outrage and entitlement is slowly but surely becoming the American way. And it’s positively disgusting.

Next time these folks want to take a trip, may I respectfully suggest they consider Six Flags. Then again, if the roller coaster is shut down for repairs, I guess it’ll be President Bush’s fault...

Excuse me?
Wow Mike, you truly are a disturbed individual, to criticize AMERICAN citizens in a deadly situation.

My friend is among those currently stranded in Lebanon, a student at AUB. Hes studying Arabic with the intention of working in the Defense Industry. If you object to that motivation Mike, I hope the terrorists blow your stupid ass up, since you clearly don't care much for improving our nations intelligence capabilities.

Ungrateful???? What are the citizens to be grateful for? They are trapped in a warzone and the government is doing nothing about it. Is it Bush's fault? No, but that doesn't excuse this idiocy.

Also, you know some Americans are actually Lebanese.... I know this is difficult for buffoons like you to wrap your head around. Maybe they are visiting their families. I don't know why they are there, but neither do you.

Saying these Americans should 'take' responsibility is like saying the soldiers who die in Iraq aren't being cautious enough.

"Stranded in Lebanon"
Even students "stranded" in Lebanon can afford the $200. or so that the FEDERAL LAW mandates that they pay for being transorted out of a war zone. If he's planning to work in the Defense Dept., he'd better learn how to act quickly when in a foreign country, especially one that has Hexbollah represented in their government.
Surely there are a couple of other places he could be studying Arabic more safely.
What will he do now, ask the government to pay his tuition for the semester he missed, and fr the next one he'll take up?
Hogwash.

Stuck in Lebonan
When the government foots the bill, it's easy to have a charitable attitude, and offer "free" passage. If we were each asked to cough up our share and mail it in, however, many would have a different attitude. There are many worthy causes to support, and I would rather support those who are in bad circumstances not of their own doing. Whether in Lebanon for work, vacation or education, most of these people are there by choice. Let these people take personal responsibility for where they are, and save our take dollars for those things that benefit all of us, and not those who chose poorly. When you build a home in a flood plane, sooner or later you're likely to get flooded. And when you go to a worn-torn part of the world, you're likely to experience war. Who's fault is that?

Did you hear the one on the radio?
Got a lift from the Norwegians who didn't have 'passenger accomodations' and she was hot uncomfortable and there were flies? THEN, American ships brought sandwiches but they DIDN'T BRING ENOUGH and people were still hungry?

Now that's ungrateful! It's only a couple of hours to Cyprus, but she missed a MEAL and that's America's fault too.

Lack of good sense
Why would any responsible person take his or her family on “vacation” in the volatile Middle East (with the possible exception of Israel, maybe?). Lebanon is no exception.

Not only is Hezbollah based in Lebanon, it holds 24 seats in the Lebanese parliament. That should tell you something – they practically own the country. They have continued to stockpile weapons in Lebanon despite U.N. Resolution 1559 “requiring” disarmament.

The once Christian majority has all but been driven out of Lebanon over the last 25 years after radical Islam declared its holy war in the 70s. Remember, Lebanon once considered itself the only Christian country in the Arab world, and Beruit was once known as the “Paris of the Middle East”. Now, it is basically an Islamic state.

My message to these whiners:

- Don’t blame your country or your president for your own poor judgment.

- If you want something to whine about, consider this -- there are Hezbollah sleeper cells right here in the U.S. (in New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Detroit, and who knows where else) waiting to be activated by their masters in Iran.

Olympic Class Whining
The masses of lumpen proles get their entire idea of how the world works from watching television programs in which everything is neatly wrapped up in an hour, with four commercial breaks and time for previews of next week's episode. They have absolutely no idea in the world how long things take in real life, and they have no idea how anything actually looks -- back in 1969 I took a world cruise and was shocked to discover that the room I would be sharing with another girl for the next 4 months was 6 by 8 feet, the size of the average bathroom, and not the spacious luxury of The Love Boat. (I have since discovered that the rooms on the Love Boat have to be big so the camera crews can get into them.) I'm sure some of these people bore the same false idea of reality in many ways.

Here in Canada if you have dual citizenship the Embassy is very clear that those holding Lebanese citizenship will be treated by Lebanon as Lebanese and the Embassy will have limited to no ability to assist them in fleeing. Particularly young men are subject to conscription by the Lebanese military and there's not a thing the Canadian government can do about that.

Should it be our fault that a bunch of foreign nationals didn't read their contract before they decided to ignore it? I think not. Let them learn a lesson they'll never learn any other way: that it is not and never has been All About Them.

On target, Mike!
In 1985, the Reagan Administration's State Department put a TRAVEL BAN on Americans going to Lebanon. In 1997, under Clinton, this was softened to a a TRAVEL WARNING (strongly discourages) and it is still in effect. (The softest is a Travel Advisory - which is suggestion to not go.)

The next time one of these people shows up on the news complaining about how, 7 time zones from the nearest point in the US, they are unable to get rapid government assistance to get out, do what I did. Send that network a set of questions to ask these people. They won't because they want to use them again to continue to get first hand accounts of conditions. But maybe it will help get the message out. The Ones I sent to CNN Headline News were to ask her next time:
1. Why are you there in disregard to the Travel Warning in the first place?
2. If you wanted to see family this summer, why did your family not send them the money to come to the safer US, rather than your going there?
3. As you complain, what portion of your predicament do you place on yourself and what is legitimate to place on the government?
4. Do you plan to come home via Baghdad?

Good article
Some Americans obviously had sound reasons for being in Lebanon such as going to school, business affairs etc. Surely they were aware of the risks and had evidently accepted the potential for danger. We needed to assist but I too resent paying for their choices. Many taxpayers will never be able to afford foreign travel but get to pay to bail out others. Many of those rescued are very grateful and other nations are marvelling at how the US has reponded to organize such a massive rescue effort. Our government should bear the costs for those people and dependents we placed there such as embassy people. The rest should be billed for their rescue.

Cypress?
It's Cyprus, not Cypress. Still good-- just need better editors!

AudiR10 is right
Here in Canda, I am sick of listening to the whining on the CBC. Evacuees are "angry and apoplectic" with the government because a six hour trip took sixteen hours without beds, water and airc conditioning. What do these people expect? It's an evacuation, not a luxury cruise. Of course, the evacuation is being picked up by the taxpayers.

I am sick of the attitudes of people who should be on their knees thanking the government of Canada for the actions taken rather than complaining. Next time, take a trip to a country that isn't infested with terrorists whose aim it is to overthrow Israel.

spoiled and contentious
" A brother (or sister) offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle. Proverbs 18:19

Historic Myopia
I was in the US Navy, 30 years ago this summer, rescuing American civilians from Lebanon. These were American civilians caught in a civil war -- not unlike the current population.

Lebanon was a war zone then. It has not changed much since. Thirty years ago, the Americans we rescued were drunk, offensive, demanding, and demeaning to the very military men taking them out on landing craft. I still carry animosity toward these coddled and spoiled rich people (most were, compared to the military folks rescuing them) who complained that the salt water was ruining their Italian shoes.

What's worse, we returned in a month to rescue the very same people who used the free trip back home as a gimme -- only to return on their own money to the same situation. And Uncle Sam saved their fannies twice. Twice.

Americans have no historical bearings. And the government is afraid to let a few spoiled brats suffer the consequence of their reckless behavior. A pox on our own house. We are irretrievably broken.

More American Wussism!
Thanks Mike, another good piece! I wonder if the spoiled brat that Ms. Conservative spoke about was willing to give up HALF of her US Navy supplied sandwich so that another could eat? I doubt it, after all it was HERS! The Navy should have given them MREs. If they are good enough for the Troops they should be adaquate for a spoiled, whiney, self centered brat!
One little puke could not wait to get before the camera to bash the U.S. This hairbag turd was your typical feminized male who spoke of "many tears" when he had to depart. He said he "did not feel good about being back, leaving his friends behind" WELL STAY DIRTBAG, nobody is ORDERING you to leave! You can stay with your friends and help throw out Hezbollah. Not once did this clown blame Hezbollah or the Leb. gov't for what is happening. No it is Israel's fault, how dare they defend themselves and America's fault that his salad fork was not chilled! Funny how Liberals hate the Military, yet love them when they are saving thier whiney asses and delivering chow! Look for this weasel at the next anti Israel rally, he'll be the one next to Cindy Sheehan.

Stuck in Lebanon
I join others in trying to figure out what these people (Americans?) are doing by living in such a place. In my opinion, most are not Americans but Arabs holding American granted citizenship for the American benefits only. They could care less about the USA. The kicker is that when this is over (if ever), they will move right back to Lebanon in spite of the ongoing situation in the middle east...everywhere. Any American who chooses to reside in such a hostile place should be formerly advised that they do so at their own risk and, next time, there will be no US Marines coming to help them. Why put young Marines in harms way to help the non-sensible?

Evacuation of Americans
Who would be stupid enough to take a vacation, go to school or whatever to go to Lebanon. I remember when they killed our Marines in their barracks - cowards. If people are stupid enough to go to countries like that then our government (the taxpayers) should not have to bail them out. It is not our fault they are there. Be careful of where you travel. INGRATES.

Stuck in Lebanon
I thought we (the US) didn't recognize dual citizenship? Anyone who presents themselves as one with dual citizenship should be told "Sorry, we don't consider you a citizen." I too am SICK of the whining. If you choose to be in Lebanon then you chose the consequences. I have a difficult time understanding why Lebanon is the only place a person can go to learn Arabic. The Defense Language Institute teaches the language to all government officials that need it for their positions and there are other places in the US and in countries that are more stable that teach it. The floor of the ship was too hard to sleep on? How about the floor of a Syrian prison or bombed out Beruit apartment?

Americans in Lebanon
This is the dumbest thing I have ever read. Every interview I have listened to was with people who were visiting relatives - mothers, fathers, grandparents, - some of whom had never seen their grandchildren.

Were you all whining when Americans in New Orleans were complaining about being left to drown? How un-American can you get?

One Grateful
There is one American known to be grateful -- she was on O'Reilly a couple of nights ago. I'm sure some of you saw it. She was there adopting a baby and had just received news she would be evacuated the next morning. Her comment, paraphrasing, was something like "thank you, we have such an awesome government." My wife was watching the show with me and immediately stated how nice it was to hear. I agreed that it was refreshing that someone would be so grateful. Predictably, like Gallagher says, most were sniffling ingrates. It is the typical response from most people, unfortunately.

Snuffling ingrates
I supposed you thought that all those un-american ingrates dying in New Orleans were ingrates as well.

If you didn't think America is in decline 'til now, this blog is proof.

Its, "terrorist scum" not "militant and
Russia lurks and smirks and loves the Iranian evil puppets works, China wines and dines as the lines of the puppets are ever so silken yet China sighs and lies, not our rockets in their pockets.

Hear me "leaders of America", TEAR DOWN THE IRAINAN PUPPET FACTORY.

If you have relatives in Lebanon, why visit at this volatile time? Surely, all this is not coming as a surprise to anyone (particularly those who have family over there).

We Americans have become so used to having Uncle Sam foot the bill for everything and bail us out everytime anything goes wrong, that we complain when our least need isn't met - and quickly.

And, of course, this is George Bush's fault. Why not? Everything else is!

Lebanon
Since someone brought up Hurricane Katrina I will give my thoughts on equating the attitudes in both disasters. The people who whined in the aftermath of Katrina were also people who refused to accept personal responsibility. Why sit and wait on the government to save you? If we haven't learned anything by now we deserve what we get. No one should wait for or depend on the government. The only way I would have stayed in New Orleans was if I could not ambulate well enough to start down the road. People had DAYS of notice. If I had no money and no car I would have still been walking out of town. Now back to Lebanon, as stated before there was a US State Department warning and if they have relatives there they know the situation. I have friends from Iran. They have returned for vacation annually in the past. Not this year. They said it is too dangerous. They are afraid that the Iranian government will not let them out. We have become a country of wimps. Isn't anything worth fighting for, even our own sovereignty?

McDonald's Syndrome
Tsunami, Hurricane, War--it doesn't matter--too many people think they are entitled to instant service, as though the government were room service. So, FEMA took some time, so the USA wasn't able to respond instantly to rescue the victims of the Tsunami, and the poor tourists stuck in Cancun complained, complained, complained. Now, there isn't a fleet of helicopters and ships to evacuate the "victims" of war in Lebanon. WHERE IS SELF-RELIANCE, AND COMMON SENSE? Down the boob tube drain I suspect. This phenomenon is most egregiously shown by those who attempt to climb mountains and get stuck. You got yourself there, get yourself out. After all, the government isn't going to change your flat tire for you, is it?

Katrina
Yes, those 80-year-old people stranded on roof tops or left to die in nursing homes are just so irresponsible. How dare they suggest that help was anything but perfect, and that the politicians that lined up at the subsequent money trough like pigs were not just God-fearing, patriotic, flag-waving all-Americans?

Lebanon
Here's some advice to any American finding themselves in trouble while travelling in a foreign country: Look for a Frenchman.

to Coolhand
I also saw a news byte showing an American praising the American efforts to get them out and saying "I'm so proud that Americans have such big hearts."

I hope she doesn't read this blog, she seemed so young to have to face the reality.

JayJay
Thanks for making my point. Those people weren't stuck on rooftops because of a lack of response from government, but rather, because they refused to evacuate when told to do so. As for the abandoned nursing home residents, were they abandoned by the government? I'm not trying to defend the poor response, just the whinning and crying of "victims" who put themselves in harm's way, then blame the government for their plight. Hurricane Katrina was a large red orange circle covering the entire gulf, and it was visible as such for days and days whilst Nagel and his crony crooks and incompetent political apointees did absolutely nothing. Don't blame America, blame the Americans who screwed up.

lebanon-Gadget & HotPat
This whole schtick is a cyncial attempt to spare this administration for another screw-up in an election year. It is interesting that all the right-wing blogs and radioistas brought it up on the same day. What a coincidence!

But perhaps we should just do it your way: let the sick and aged and poor who didn't have transportation or money drown in their own poverty-ridden juices (We don't like the poor, anyway, they're so icky and they don't know how to dress well) and as for the Americans in Lebanon who couldn't change their tickets in time or who just didn't leave, well, why not just leave them to get their brains blown out, they deserve it, bad decisions should be punished.

Earth to JayJay...
Do you really believe things would have been any different if Kerry, Gore, or Clinton were president. They couldn't have stopped Katrina. They couldn't have gotten help to New Orleans any faster. It would still have been a cluster. The moral: Don't make yourself dependent on government. It doesn't matter who is in charge, nobody cares more about you and yours than you do. I grew up in New Orleans. The same thing happened with Hurricane Betsy. Nobody remembers that, but a lot more people died trapped in their attics when the flood waters rose. Look up who was in office then. (Hint: there wasn't a republican to be found in Louisiana and precious few in DC.)

You can argue that the timing was related to American led efforts to try and "censure" Iran for pursuing nukes. But do you really believe that there would have been no war between Israel and Hezbollah? Do you think South Korea would have not tested their missiles? Do you think Iran would have given up nay hope of acquiring nukes? Are you confident enough to risk the whole world? Once again, there were plenty of warnings. You could see tensions rising in the middle east. The State department was advising against visiting or remaining in Lebanon. You go there and all hell breaks loose. Sorry pal. If you think the Israelis would have been less destructive if Kerry or Gore or Clinton were in office, you are not particularly astute. If you think they would have gotten rescue capability there any faster, you are uninformed. And did it ever occur to you or the evacuees that, rightly or wrongly, they were wearing a big target on their backs? It's not like Hezbollah has any love for Americans, regardless how liberal. So far, we have just been lucky that they have been hunkered down and occupied with hiding from Israeli bombs while trying to shell Israel.

JayJay
Typical socialist rhetoric: no one mentioned anything about the "poor" "disadvantaged" or any other "class" stereotype, save you. The discussion is about personal responsibility, not class warfare, which is all you demonrats can think about. By the way, the administration is NOT up for election this year. One-third of the Senate, and all of the House is standing for election. So how is it that you think the administration is engaging in politics? By the way, because you are apparently either intelligence challenged, or the tin-foil hat you wear is interfering with your understanding of what we have been asserting, try this: row out to sea in a leaky row boat, then moan and complain about how slow the United States Coast Guard is in finding and rescuing you. You may want to use a satellite telephone, because your cellular telephone will soon be useless.m PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Finally, how were you helping during Katrina?

JayJay
The troll must'a moved over to The Daily Kos for a brain transfusion.

Just once, I’d like to see an American on TV express some appreciation for their country during times like these. What a joy it would have been to turn on the television and see an evacuee from Lebanon say something like, “Boy, was I ever dumb for deciding to take a vacation in Lebanon. Now do you really think MSM will put that on air, it would not fit their blame america first agenda.

hotpat
Sorry, I misspoke -= people shouldn't get their brains blown out for making bad decisions, but for not taking responsibility.

I spent a month in N.O. which began two weeks after that disaster. I know you don't like people who bring up the problems of the poor (it's so tacky and pinko) but if you think the things I mentioned were sterotypes you should get out of your picket-fence Thomas Kincade wonderworld for a while and take a look.

JayJay
So your comfortable with government being Mommy and Daddy, and making others the perpetual child?

Gadfly
I thought paternalistic government was atually the conservative dream - a government that dictates what we can do with our reproductive systems, how and when we can die, who we can marry or even love, and what diseases we can try to cure with discarded stem cells that might, by some stroke of magic, be recovered from the hazardous waste bins and morphed into a baby.

who's the child?

JayJay
At least it would be a mommy and Daddy that set limits on bad behavior.

JayJay
Regarding your comments about the people in New Orleans trapped by Katrina.

I, for one, have no sympathy for them, and feel no responsibility for bailing them out financially through my tax dollars. They chose to live there; they chose to stay. If they also chose not to buy insurance, I fail to see why I should step in and pay for their bad choices.

I spend a lot of money each year paying for my own insurance, to provide for my family and me; my responsibility stops exactly there.

JayJay
One more thing: you know what? Sometimes, life's just tough. No one said it's going to be fair. The Constitution guarantees equal opportunity, not equal outcome.

That's life, bubba.

Great Article
I thought the article was right on. Our government is doing plenty to get Americans out of Lebanon. I think most of these articles must have been written by young "Yuppie" American's. "I want what I want and I want it right now!" My goodness, these writers sound like the same Post-Katrina whiners. It's time to grow up! Great Job Mike, keep it up even if the truth hurts,

Lebanon vacationers
A pox on the houses of ALL of these ungrateful wretches who complain about their country's best efforts to rescue them from their follies!

Whats New
This is just another example of people not taking responsibility for their actions. It is easier for people to blame others for the situation they have created themselves.

We go to Mcdonalds three to five days a week, stuff our faces with Big Macs, French fries, and Milk shakes and what to we do? Sue Mcdonlads for making us FAT.

We get cancer from smoking cigarettes for 30 years then and we sue the tobacco company because they sell a harmful substance. By no means am I saying the tobacco companies aren't scum, but I have been a smoker for 15 years and have been well aware of the dangers of smoking for almost all of those 15 years. God forbid I get cancer, should I sue them for that?

My point is we all make choices. Whether it is to over eat, smoke, or go to Lebanon for whatever reason. Then when those choices don't turn out the way we want or expect them to we expect others to bail us out. (or give us a boat load of money for it)
