The Solution to Somali Piracy

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The recent rise in Somali piracy confuses me. It confuses me because I cannot imagine entering waters near the coast of Africa without enough firepower to arm a small third-world nation. It confuses me as much as that home security commercial that features a burglar breaking into the home of a married couple. You know the one where the wife gets a call from another man at security headquarters who promises to send someone to help. Meanwhile the husband locks himself in a closet and hopes for the best.

When that husband eventually comes out of the closet he might as well have his genitals surgically removed. When his wife realizes he can’t defend her against an intruder she probably isn’t going to risk the possibility of procreation. Some genes just weren’t meant to survive.

I understand the media’s need to produce new heroes in an age of rampant metro-sexuality. I also understand that Captain Phillips’ intentions were good – after all, he was on a charitable mission. But he had no business endangering a crew of twenty by placing them in harms way without sufficient firepower. The image of these men locking themselves in a cabin to avoid the Somali pirates is simply embarrassing.

There are a couple of rules anyone must follow when venturing into potentially dangerous waters – and by “potentially dangerous waters” I mean anything but a small lake or pond. First, it is a good idea to bring a few friends. Second, it is a good idea to require every adult on board to remain sober and bring a firearm.

I don’t fish as often as I did in the Texas Gulf Coast in the 1970s. But I do get an occasional invite to go deep sea fishing off the Carolina coast with three good friends. Two of these friends work in a national security capacity for the federal government (please pardon the pseudonyms). So it should go without saying that we have the hardware and skills to defeat a small (or large) band of pirates whenever we venture into the Atlantic Ocean. We don’t have any evidence of piracy off the Carolina coast. But we all subscribe to the belief that it is better to have a gun and not need one than to need a gun and not have one.

So on most of our ventures we carry the following:

1. Larry likes to go boating with an M4 tactical shotgun made by Benelli. This is the same tactical shotgun used by the U.S. Marine Corps. It has a truly unique Auto Regulating Gas Operated system with stainless steel, self-cleaning pistons located just ahead of the chamber. This makes for a highly reliable and very quick cycling weapon. The M4 Tactical also comes with a rail for optics and a synthetic pistol-grip style stock. This is really all we need when we go deep sea fishing but why take the risk?

2. Moe, having a little more limited budget than Larry, likes to carry the Model 1100 tactical shotgun by Remington. This weapon has, for years, been a top choice among law enforcement agencies across the country. The Model 1100 is an extremely dependable weapon. It is chambered for 2 3/4" shells and is available with a 22" barrel with a 9-round magazine capacity.

3. Curly, prefers to carry a sidearm. His weapon of choice is a Sig Sauer Model 226 chambered in 9mm. Curly carries four loaded 20-round magazines, which means he can fire off 80 rounds before having to reload a magazine. I’ve told him on more than one occasion that if he spends 80 rounds and anyone is left standing he should just jump overboard and give his life to the sharks.

4. Finally, I carry a BAR chambered in 7mm mag. I play the role of the sniper in the unlikely event that any of the Three Stooges is taken hostage. I am also preparing to purchase a Saiga 12 Russian shotgun with a five-round magazine. I also plan to purchase a 12-round magazine as a backup. I’ve been impressed with You Tube video demonstrations and recommendations from respected friends who say the Saiga is a) reliable, and b) capable of delivering shotgun blasts as fast as I can pull the trigger.

I understand quite well that there are ports that will not allow entry to boats that are carrying firearms. And I understand that they are in places where we would like to deliver humanitarian aid. But the solution is not to go into these areas unarmed. The solution is to tell the nations in which these ports are located that they must change their laws or forfeit charitable goods coming from our generous Christian nation.

Yes....Good Solution.......
"The solution is to tell the nations in which these ports are located that they must change their laws or forfeit charitable goods coming from our generous Christian nation."

but it's not the crews fault...they were ordered to hide by the captain....who had to contend with idiotic port of call regulations and insurance requirements.

Americans, arm thyselves on the high seas.....arrrgghhh maties....argghhh

How long before
we hear how "patiently" and "studiously" Barack Obama handled this crisis situation, reminiscent no doubt of JFK's response to the Cuban missile crisis??

I hear the pirates are threatening revenge. Perhaps it's time to start strafubg the beaches of Somalia?

erratum
that's "strafing" . . .

arming ourselves
Mike ,I agree we should arm our merchent marine. We,being americans are different than the rest of the world,in that we allow ourselves arms as a god given right...having said that ,companies have thru history NOT allowed crews to arm themselves for fear of mutiny....We need to change companies attitudes, not the government in this case....Mark

Perhaps this would work
Maybe all we'd need to do is bring back the Victory Ship of the 1940's. They were armed with a five-inch gun on the stern, a three-inch gun on the bow, and 8x20MM Anti-Aircraft Guns. I doubt that any pirates in their right mind would try to attack one of those. And since none of those weapons would be considerated firearms, the Victory Ship wouldn't violate any local laws.

True Story of American Creativity
I can't resist telling this true story for the benefit of our younger folks. In 1968 an American ship, the Pueblo, was captured and the crew held in North Korea. Crew members were allowed to write to their families but the letters were closely censored by the captors and the prisoners were required to say only nice things about their captivity. But one man cleverly sneaked a true message through by writing, "We paean the people of North Korea for their treatment of us." "What does this word 'paean' mean?" asked the captors. "Look it up," the American said. "It means 'praise'". So the word passed inspection and the letter went out. BUT. People stateside who received the letter understood immediately: the word 'paean' had been incorrectly used as a verb, and it is a noun as in "we will sing paeans to the Lord"---you may know the word from church, from hymns. But read that sentence out loud, "We paean the people of North Korea for their treatment of us" listening for the secret message, one so rude that I doubt the townhall filter will let me say it---so I will put it in more polite language: "We urinate on the people of North Korea for their treatment of us". This is a true story. It was printed in many magazines, now nearly 40 years ago.

Pirates are the victims
Tax and spend is necessary with a well armed population.

Poor Africans and all that wealth floating by and the ships have no rights to bare arms

I guess the Africans don’t need the Democratic Party to redistribute the wealth.

This may sound odd but if we Americans were unarmed there would be no need for the Democratic Party.

The second Amendment guarantees job security for the Democratic Party.

Obama Approved Special Forces Team
This is from George Stephanopoulos, ABC News:

"A senior US official tells me that President Barack Obama approved a recommendation by Defense Secretary Bob Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen to dispatch special forces to the US scene on Friday. These special forces were authorized to take action "in extremis" against the Somali pirates holding Maersk Captain Richard Phillips, 53, hostage on a motorized lifeboat off the coast of Somalia."

From Associated Press:

"The operation, personally approved by President Barack Obama, quashed fears the saga could drag on for months and marked a victory for the U.S., which for days seemed powerless to resolve the crisis despite massing helicopter-equipped warships at the scene."

Obama doesn't seem quite so weak and "indecisive" on foreign policy anymore does he now? (as some conservatives prefer to portray him)

In other news, not only did Iowa become the third state to legalize gay marriage, but last week, Vermont became the fourth. They are falling like dominoes now.

Kudos, Mr President.

Kudos Iowa and Vermont.

I love my country!

You can bet that obama and the UN will come up with a touchy-feely multi-billion dollar plan (funded by us of course),that will only make matters worse. Arming merchant ships will not be considered. We must reach out to the poor oppressed people who only hijack ships because of low self esteem.

Obama doesn't seem quite so weak and "indecisive" on foreign policy anymore does he now? (as some conservatives prefer to portray him)
.................
Don't give him to much credit. That's one of those decisions like, do you call the fire department or let your kids burn up in a fire.

When are you and (Bruce?) tying the knot?

Will,
It only took 5 days to get around to letting the Armed Forces solve this problem. Try as I might, the only reason I can think of why this wasn't done on day one was they were under orders not to. There was even an oppurtunity to destroy the boat while the captain was trying to swim away and out of any lines of fire.

That looks damned weak, and weakness is always rewarded with more agression.

Jim
Those Navy Seal snipers took out 3 Somali pirates expertly in the dead of night. Obama can get tough when he needs to.

Here's something new from the AP:

----------

Analysis: Obama scores win on pirate crisis

His administration passes its first critical national security test

WASHINGTON - The U.S. economy is showing only glimmers of life and two costly wars remain in the balance, but President Barack Obama's "no drama" handling of the Indian Ocean hostage crisis proved a big win for his administration in its first critical national security test.

Obama's quiet backstage decision to authorize the Defense Department to take necessary action if Capt. Richard Phillips' life was in imminent danger gave a Navy commander the go-ahead to order snipers to fire on the pirates holding the cargo ship captain at gunpoint.

For Obama, the benefits were instantly clear: an American life saved and a major victory notched against an increasingly worrisome scourge of the seas off the Horn of Africa.

--------------------

Our fair & balanced, no-nonsense president!

No sale
It was still 5 DAYS that Obama sat on his hands. Nothing in that article refutes my opinion and "go ahead" order confirms part of it.

Phillips was taken off his ship by armed men. His life was in "imminent danger" from the get go.

FIVE DAYS.

Now the big O wants to take credit ?

FIVE DAYS. No way to get around that.

What I'm curious about...
... is, had the mission failed, and the captain had been killed in the operation, how many people here would be complaining that Obama acted too rashly and should have taken more time?

Probably not most people here, but I'll bet there'd have been some.

and
That aint his first national security test by a long shot, it's just the first one he got half right.

Frey, sometimes the hostage dies. It truly sucks but that's just the way it is. Life's problem are not all neatly solved in Hollywood fashion. None of have script writers on our side.

Jim
What about your boy - "W" Bush?

When he wanted to take out Saddam Hussein, did he deploy special forces to do it?

No, he got a couple thousand of our men and women, along with tens of thousands of Iraqi citizens, needlessly killed; he burned up a trillion and a half dollars and ALL FOR NOTHING.

We are not safer now than we were before 9/11. If a sleeper cell of suicide bombers in the U.S. can get away with hijacking a Boeing 727 and drive it into another landmark building, HOW ARE WE SAFER?

What Obama did was quick and clean, surgical. Your previous president was an abomination.

Will, did you mean "Obama-nation"?
It is against US policy to assassinate a foreign leader - no matter how odious they may be. I suspect the Iraqi people would argue with your contention that their liberation was "ALL FOR NOTHING." We weren't safer before 9/11 as the terrorists had demonstrated their will to attack us all through the 1990's under Clinton's watch.

Some decisions to use force are easy calls; others require deliberation. GWB wasted 18 months dancing with the Dems and the UN before "rushing" to liberate Iraq.

5 days?
Shouldn't of been 5 days. If the Navy had the capacity to pop the heads of the captors then why didn't they do it the first time Captain Phillips jumped the raft? It was reported that they had to get Obama's permission twice, the second time being the captors had guns pointed at his head. So Obama is taking credit for an aggressive action that he would of touted George Bush for as an out of control cowboy? Funny how the libs are clapping that the bad guys got popped off and yet they are still moaning about terrorists getting killed. Oh yeah, you keep calling them the innocent Iraqi people. American soldiers don't go after innocents but I guess you will only believe it if your cowboy is in charge.

Ok
1 - Bush was not "my boy". I lean conservative for the most part.

I never agreed with invading Iraq. I thought we should have blown every suspected site and stragtic target to hell and said to the survivors "Boys, don't make me come back".

These are a people that have proven they can kill themselves to kill someone they hate and in thirty years they never got rid of Saddam themselves. I got no sympathy for them. Now we have turned them into our b@st@rd stepchildren that we are honor bound to care for.

2- Bush was your president every bit as much as Obama is currently my president.

I hope I've made that clear.

What the snipers did was quick, clean, and surgical. What Obama did was waffle till it became clear he was not making points with anyone.

Now, since we've wandered away from the subject, how do you think we should deal with any sleeper cells ?

You did notice there were not any more attacks on US soil on Bush's watch. Key words there are US soil.

And how about that Patriot Act and the creation of Homeland Security ? I thought those were silly knee jerk reactions, but to listen to the Dems it was the most horrendous thing in the history of the world despite that they all voted for it. Now, the Democrats have had congress for two years and now the White House. I've not heard one single call to dismantle them. Must not be evil when liberals control them.

We could throw this crud back and forth all the way back to the beginning of recorded history. I'm really not that interested.

The subject of this commentary is our response to piracy, which is making the French look good.

Ah well, it's late. Good Night All.

I'll Say It Again, Send In The Drones!

You have an economic and political disaster of a country, Somalia, with a group of "pirates" with a good business model that live in the Eyl-region of the country. Now, these pinstripe-wearing, automatic-weapons touting entrepreneurs all live in a massive mansions and drive expensive cars in an impoverished area.

If a drone can pick off a terrorist driving a run-of-the-mill SUV in Yemen, is it impossible to believe that these conspicuous consumers can't likewise be missile-kissed on the kisser?

If you (chemically) stomped out the antpile, then you don't get bit by ants.

Adams, I must say, as an avid fisherwoman, the description of your typical fishing jaunt reminds me of that scene in Crocodile Dundee II. Do you fish by dynamite, as well?

Let me see if I got this right:

Adams and his friends think they have to be heavily armed any time they go "deep sea fishing" in the Atlantic?

Seems to me that they are either: (1) extremely paranoid, or (2) simply eager to play with their toys.

But I guess that's better than Adam's usual recreation of picking on gays and feminists.

Bottom line
Obama didn't rescue the captain and kill the pirates. The Navy Serals did. Giving them the OK was the biggest no-brainer of his presidency, and it took him 5 days to do it.

The nazis are here
Calling themselves "Homeland Security"

Homeland Security on guard for 'right-wing extremists'
Returning U.S. military veterans singled out as particular threats

and those that are mainly anti-government, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."
http://wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=94803

Dr Douglas
I think your second choice is correct. They like to play with their toys. What's wrong with that?

Send In The Drones. Correction

"If you (chemically) stomp out the antpile, then you don't get bit by ants."

No antpile. No pirates. No hostages.

I have long blonde hair.
Weigh less than 108 pounds soaking wet.
Wear designer FMPs.
Carrying a firearm with a permit and have a police riot shotgun.

Do I need Dr. Freud?

BTW, there are a few fish where firearms are necessary for survival. Large sharks and marlins come to mind. Either can kill you. One with a CHOMP and the other with a SPEAR to the head, neck, chest or torso.

I will agree; however, that Adams' description reminds me of Crocodile Dundee's fishing excursion off of Manhattan.

Denise
What are FMP's?

What a Nerve!
Obama is now taking credit for the hostage retrieval from Somali pirates? And after ONLY 5 days.

What absolute cheek!

"The solution is to tell the nations in which these ports are located that they must change their laws or forfeit charitable goods coming from our generous Christian nation."

Well said, Mike.

You sound like my kind of girl. I'm approximately twice your weight, all muscle. You single, by any chance?

Wow
I forgot that you have all the answers - more
gun power and gun powder. Life is so simple
really when you think of it. Or perhaps I should say - when you don't think.

Dr. Adams
The waters where you prefer to fish are sometimes traversed by drug smugglers and intoxicated hooligans, but they have been mostly free of pirates for almost 300 years. The reason is that people who had the power to stop piracy thereabouts did so ruthlessly.

Piracy was never an industry in North Carolina, and its main participants were outsiders. Its putative golden age was brief. It lasted only -- from 1713, when the Treaty of Utrecht ended Queen Anne's War, till 1718, when two events abruptly cooled any interest in piracy thereabouts.

Edward Teach (a.k.a. Blackbeard) and his sometime collaborator Stede Bonnet had worn out their welcome nearly everywhere else in the Western Hemisphere. But both found sanctuary for a few months in North Carolina, ruled by the corrupt Governor Charles Eden.

In September 1718, Col. William Rhett led a squadron from Charleston, S.C., to the Cape Fear River, where he caught Bonnet doing hull maintenance. Bonnet and most of his surviving crew were tried in Charleston and hanged.

Teach became so burdensome that coastal residents sought help from Governor Spotswood of Virginia. Spotswood sent Lt. Robert Maynard, who engaged Teach at Ocracoke Inlet in November 1718. The victorious Maynard put the survivors in irons, hung Teach's head from his bowsprit, and sailed into Bath, then the capital of North Carolina, to send a message to Governor Eden and his kind. (The head was later displayed on a pole in Hampton, Va., as a warning to would-be pirates.)

If the U.S. Navy were given similar latitude, it could end piracy in the Gulf of Aden in a month.

Oops
Sorry about the stray dash in the second paragraph of my last post.

It won't Happen...
Under Obama, this won't happen, but what if we floated millions of fliers over this area in Swahili -Bantu and Arabic telling that their will be not more food aid -no more economic aid through local shipping -until they tell the eldeers to stop the pirates. that being done if it doesn't stop -the high seas must remain free.
Andrew Jackson sent Captain Downs to stop Sunatran pirates in the 1830s and he took apart one town that was their base killing over a hundred people -evil yes -but the pirating stopped cold.

barry---HEED THE SIMILARITIES
A few men (pirates) overtake a Ship with many Americans and our Navy responds, rising up to the rescue.
A few men (politicians) overtake The Ship of America and We the People WILL respond and WILL rise up to rescue our Country.

Denise, et al
You express my views. Pirates have been a pain in the butt for water commerce for at least 30 years. To think of a huge ship being boarded and robbed by a few lightly armed bandits boggles the mind, but "no resistance" has been the policy espoused by the shipping corporations and the world's governments. The pirates stole important money at zero risk. How could anyone not assume things would get worse with appeasement? Thaings ALWAYS get worse with appeasement. And now its time to send in the UAVs. There is no way the big wigs can hide. Take out the mansions and known buildings, then drop warning leaflets, and if necessary, flatten the seaport towns. Not just in Somalia. The straits of Sumatra have been centers of pirate activity. Now that the gloves are off, maybe a few shipping companies will arm their crews. I see no way a pirate in a zodiac can defeat a 5,000 ton freighter which might well be carrying a couple old wire-guided Saggers capable of sinking anything a pirate could be using. Negotiate? Negotiate this!!!!

Not good enough
The pirates shouldn't be able to get that close. Every boat going through those waters should have BMGs in caliber 50.
But we shouldn't have to bother with even that. One carrier group and tell the Somalian government (If there is such a thing) to join us or get out of the way. We know where they are based. Destroy those bases.

Pirate Bob...
...the crews certainly do have the right to bare arms.Especially in those hot climates such as Africa.

Paleocon
Thanks for the history lesson. It's always nice to hear stories where the good guys win and the bad guys lose their lives. This one is particularly great because it's true.

TEST OF GLOBAL LEADERSHIP FOR OBAMA
Any empty suit of a president could have given the authorization to use force to save Captain Phillips-even Jimmy Carter could have done this. It was hardly a test of Obama's character and leadership. The real test comes in the aftermath. What is Obama going to do about the pirates and the lawless, broken failed state of Somalia? Click my name and read my piece: "The Meaning of Captain Phillip's Rescue" for insight.

Truths Revealed: Part One
This pirate episode proved the fallacy of liberal ideology and the truth of conservative doctrine on important issues. Naturally, this will be overlooked as the propagandists in our media work to convince America that Obama himself freed the hostages and glorify his image to us.

Now we know the results of gun control. We know that the old adage “when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns” is true. We know progressives are wrong. We know not to permit them to outlaw guns in America. It is being disclosed, now, that the reason the world’s ships are unarmed is because UN treaties of the seas forbid weapons on commercial ships and prohibit any nation from intervening against piracy. It is actually fact that the US is now in violation of this treaty because it killed the Somali Pirates! Un-effing-believable!

We witnessed the relative merits of diplomacy and military might when responding to foreign aggression. We saw the futility of meaningless words. This should be instructive to anyone still advocating dialogue with rabid zealots who believe killing us, and themselves, will get them 72 virgins in the afterlife. Besides, there aren’t 72 virgins in the universe and those Arab chicks are fat and ugly. No wonder they’re required to wear burkhas!

Truths Revealed: Part Two
We saw the hypocrisy of outcome based policies loved by progressives. When the chips were down, it wasn’t some politically correct rainbow coalition cross-section of America today that got the job done. It was an elite meritocracy, the SEALs, who were called upon in a crisis. What might the outcome had been if years ago the SEALs bowed to Senator Feinstein and permitted unqualified persons to become elite warriors to satisfy our nation’s hatred of achievement and success because of its unfairness? What if the standards for our special forces had been lowered so that women could wear the distinctive headgear and badges of the spec ops guys?

All liberal beliefs were refuted with this event. Conservative pundits and politicians need to drive this home and the need to eradicate this country of these stupid liberal ideas and their proponents. Literally!

Obama, the MSM Hog
The Mainstream Media now wants to give all the Credit for Capt. Phillips rescue to Obama, rather than the Navy Seal Snipers, the Captain of the Bainbridge, and the Department of Defense, Robert Gates.

The Mainstream Media conversely refuses to give Obama all the Credit for the collapse of the Republic by banckruptcy and the remaking of the Republic into a Marxist,Islamofacist tyrannic Country like Somalia

Another Observation
Has it occurred to anyone else that in every case of a national concern, America calls upon and is saved, by conservatives, conservative policies and conservative institutions.

Never has it happened that in a national disaster or hostage situation, we were served by liberals, liberal commentators, actors, politicians, Bill Maher, Michael Moore, celebrities, welfare recipients, the Black Caucus, Ted Kennedy, or comedic senators from Minnesota?

None of these progressive parasites, these hemorrhoids that cling on the backside of humanity for a free ride ever help us out. They are useless. Even flies and maggots cleanse the Earth of dead rotting flesh. But liberals don't even contribute that.

No, it's always the white males that have to save the day so that liberals can continue to badmouth their country and spit on past generations that build this place so that liberals can tear it down.

I say that we should round up all liberals and let our military use them to practice headshots so as to be prepared for the next group of mongoloid skinnies that hijack our boats in some crotch of the globe third world country.

Fool the Pirates
We should emulate the Germans, who, during WWII, utilized "raiders", which were fully equipped warships disguised as merchant ships.
They had a superstructure that employed "drop down" panels behind which were large caliber heavy guns that could be used to sink Allied merchant ships. They were constantly repainted at sea and the superstructures were easily changeable to alter the overall appearance of the ship. It would take only two or three of those kinds of ship to cruise back and forth along the Somali coast to lure the pirates out far enough that they couldn't swim back to shore after their mother ship and dinghies were sunk.

As far as that lone surviving pirate is concerned, he should be tried by a military tribunal on the Navy vessel he is incarcerated on and then hung for piracy. That's how they did it in the old days.

Obama's victory? Ha!
Obama can't take ANY credit for the rescue. PERIOD!

He just wants to put HIS FACE on a story of heroism and rescue that had NOTHING to do with HIM...thereby taking attention away from the REAL American heroes here. What an absolutely disgusting political opportunist!

He gave no permission except the only POSSIBLE one, which was, essentially, "Save the captain if you can".

BIG DEAL! The Navy was gonna do that ANYWAY!!

What ELSE could he have said without all Americans calling for his resignation? But his history points to his extreme reluctance to EVER target Blacks (which the Somali pirates ARE) for ANYTHING. He was FORCED to in this case.

But asking Obama to do something about Black crime anywhere in the world? Don't make me laugh!

Forgive me, I'm just a little cynical here, judging him from his past behavior. I hope the U.S. DOES get tough with the Somali Pirates from NOW ON.

But consider this...

Obama will NEVER even TRY to fix the Black crime problem in America, wherein Black males commit violent crimes (murder, rape, assault, armed robbery, carjacking)on a frequency 800% greater than whites or asians. Even if the percentage were 25%, that would be HUGELY indicative of a massive social problem. But 800% (FBI statistics) is simply OFF THE CHARTS. Politically, Obama has to say the problem does not exist. Or if it does exist, it is somehow WHITE peoples fault. Otherwise he will risk losing Black votes.

Now consider one more thing...

If Obama had been raised by Blacks instead of Whites, statistically he would be beginning his third prison term right now, INSTEAD OF his first term as President of the United States!

ARMED TO REPEL PRIATES
When I bought my 43" Endeavor sailboat in New Bern, NC, I recognized whether sailing off shore in the Atlantic, or along the Inter Coastal Water way (Sounds and Chesapeake Bay), calling 911 to repel pirates or just plain 'Ol crooks wasn't going to be much help. So I always took at least two weapons along with me.....my model 226 Sig Sauer 9mm (Glad to see our tastes in weapons are similar....love the pistol) and a stainless steel Ruger Mini-14 given to me by my son, LtCol Jim Hawkins, USMC (Ret) (nice nautical name) who recognized I really needed to be self sufficient.

I haven't had to fire a shot in anger yet, but I keep hoping. Glad to see Capt. Phillips is on his way home, and three of the four pirates are returning in body bags.

Does the world know it's possible to identify pirate ships and boats as they leave the Coast of Africa, and sink them using military aircraft? Do the words "Bombing" and "Strafing" bring to mind any defensive activities? (Those Marine Harriers do an excellent job.) We may not get them all, at first, but if enough were sunk as they reached International Waters, I bet those who remain will give some thought to their chosen profession.

I agree mostly with Mike A
Armed and armed to the teeth I say. Better safe than sorry, after all that is why most of us get permits to carry.

However why all the close range weapons only? Those are only good once you get boarded, would it not be better to take them out before they get that close?

I would recomend a .308 rifle or something with a bit of penetrating power. A nice Springfield M1A would do very nice here.

Sounds like your buddy has the Sig Blackwater Tactical, great gun! I think all of you should have a side arm as well.

We need all good guys armed. Deterance works! After all, it helped win the cold war.

I still say we level these Pirates villages. They are living it up back home with their stolen loot and the people see them as Robin Hood type heroes. They are loved and respected for their crimes, teaching the children their future.

Funny
how the liberals here treat our military with disdain until a liberal president needs them

Look . . .
it took so long to rescue this man because Obama was wringing his hands worrying about how not to offend the Muslim world. Would not a true leader simply have said to his military from day one, "I have faith in your judgment and ability to execute it. Do whatever you need to do to free this man and bring him home safely."

Situations such as this do not call for "nuance," they call for swift and decisive action. We all remain in grave danger from a so-called president who telegraphs weakness to the world on a daily basis.

Fresh Water Pirates
If the U.S. Government didn’t step up and do something it would have been very interesting boating on the Detroit River this summer.

The land Pirates are already striping the abandoned houses of all the metals.

Some of the pirates have been electrocuted trying to take down the power lines.

Michigan is already showing signs of going the way of Somalia.

Loved the column. I hear that some of the fish from the big water need shooting too. I agree that the sailers should have been armed, and then we would have less priates living. One more, any lucky enough to live should be hung at sea, from the tallest poll on the ship.
Kirk

I'm not for arming civilian
merchant seamen. However there is well-established precedent for arming merchant vessels, utilizing naval personnel during wartime (yes, if you haven't noticed, we are in a war). It was done extensively during WWII to protect merchant convoys in the Atlantic from the U-Boat threat. This wouldn't require any special legislation, just an executive order from the POTUS.

Open Sea
There is no law at sea. Every commercial fishing boat goes armed. All our major firearms manufacturers market weapons in stainless steel or salt-proof finish specifically aimed at the sea-going market. Ships and boats disappear all the time. You can't call a cop. Arguably the best example of better to have it and not need....

Fuzzy thinking moonbats recommend Kumbyah. How did it work for Cap'n Phillips? How many times have i heard some cretin say violence never solved anything? What incredible idiocy. The ability to wage violence or retaliate against it is at the root of everything. It underlies all law and government, which basically are attempts to rein in the violence of anarchy. Every child explores the uses of violence and should be educated in its limitations and dangers.

In the meantime, it was violence that settled which empire, Rome or Carthage would rule the Mediterranean, Whether Chiang or Mao would rule China, and whether Phillips would live or die.

Corn Dog
Obama wasn’t Genuflecting to Saudi King he was either trying to look under his dress or wiping off the mirror he had on his shoe.

Amen to James B
It is "funny how the liberals here treat our military with disdain until a liberal president needs them" -- funny in the sense that utter intellectual prostitution, moral bankruptcy, and soul-deep hypocrisy is funny.

It reminds me of how quickly military service ceased to be a presidential qualification concern for liberals, once the combined service of the top 3 Democrat candidates and the eventual VP nominee totaled zero years, zero months, zero days, zero hours and zero seconds.

I really like Anthony's idea.
It would accomplish two objectives...kill pirates AND pissoff the UN, a worthy endeavor in it's own right.

A crew could be mustered of all us old retired military guys who still have some fight in them and who despise the direction this country is taking.
Bravo Zulu to our Navy, Decatur would be proud of them.

Sounds About Right.
Sounds pretty good, Dr. Mike.

However, since long-guns are a bit unwieldy for crew members who are performing manual labor in adverse conditions, a general issue of snubby revolvers in pocket holsters to all crew members would be a good backup to a proper arms locker.

The purpose of those 5, readily accessible shots, being to break free of ambush and get to said arms locker.

Its definitely time for Americans to stop bending over backwards trying to be "sensitive" to the rest of the world as the rest of the world throws muck at us and to start acting like citizens of the greatest country in the world again.

The Return of the Dr. Douglas PSA
[Sorry I've been neglecting this duty for a while -- work makes demands, as I'm sure all of my conservative co-posters understand]

Once again, I observe several TH posters have responded to Dr. Douglas. Thus, it's time once again for The Dr. Douglas Public Service Announcement:

Dr. Douglas once posted that his own university, Oregon State, was too poor to hire teaching assistants. In fact, as I learned in 5 minutes on the OSU website, OSU does indeed hire TAs. They also recognize and negotiate with the TAs collective bargaining unit. And OSU has a special award to recognize excellence among TAs.

I just want to remind everyone who's done Dr. D the courtesy of responding to him that the man is either a hopeless ignoramus, a pathological liar, an utter fool, or some combination of all 3.

The preceding was a public service announcement courtesy of Doc Liberty. As always, we thank you for your support.

Navy Seals are American Warriors

The American Warrior is someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness for Duty, Honor and Country.

The American Warrior is someone who frightens many people, because those people live in denial of reality, the American Warrior reminds those people that violence exists in the world.

The American Warrior has the capacity for violence towards those who threaten America and the American way of life.

The American Warrior is a constant reminder that there are terrorists in the land and those that wish to destroy America are already here on American soil.

The American Warrior on September 11, 2001, rushed towards the danger instead of fleeing from it, intent on defending and helping those American citizens in danger.

Many American Warriors gave their lives that day and many more were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for America and its citizens.

Most Americans are glad that they were not on the planes that crashed into the WTC and the Pentagon - the American Warrior wished they had been on those planes because they might have made a difference.

American Warriors were on United Airlines Flight 93 and defended unto death America and its citizens with the cry "lets roll".

The American Warrior waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, America and its citizens.

"There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men." - Edmund Burke

I salute the American Warrior, both living and dead. Men and women who serve in the Armed Forces, Police Forces, Fire Departments and ordinary civilians who rush forward to our defense instead of running from danger.

Mike Adams
"It confuses me as much as that home security commercial that features a burglar breaking into the home of a married couple. You know the one where the wife gets a call from another man at security headquarters who promises to send someone to help. "

There are at least 4 of those commercials, have you ever noticed its always a white guy breaking in? I know there are white guys that break into homes , but in the interest of affermative action cant we have at least one commercial where a "person of color" breaks in?

Close combat.
All but the 7mm magnum are close combat weapons, that would not hold up well against the AK's. You need more and further reaching power - 50mm BMG or similar.

Anyway, the maritime laws prohibit arming of merchant ships. They recommend barbed wire and increase in speed - quite pathetic.

Maybe we should provide for armed marshals to be placed aboard the ships, similar to what we do with the airlines, but with much more firepower.

Michigander
Why would you be against arming the crew?
A lot of these guys are ex military, they are trained in the use of weapons.
They're all required to be back-ground checked etc.

As a retired Merchant Marine officer, I'm just curious.
Back when I was tugboating we all carried guns in our bags because we had to drive into work through bad neighborhoods at wierd hours in nice cars....the front office issued a notice against it and vowed to fire anyone who violated it, any bets on how many guys obeyed it?

No-one ever shot anyone either.

Lilly's story
Paen is pronounced PAYING, not PEEING. You missed the giant lesson of that story: why did our citizens remain in captivity so long? Why is our ship on display in a museum tribute to NK's bravery? Why was our intelligence gear captured? And you want to laud the captain for a message? And, if he was saying that our nation was "paying" NK to keep them there, well, that wouldn't surprise me either considering our leadership at the time.

Police Protection for Individual a Myth

The vast majority of Police men and women, are American Heroes and I support them.

The Police who are dedicated to serving and protecting their Citizens, serve us under almost overwhelming restrictions placed on them by Liberal Politicians and Liberal Activist judges.

Police have 'NO' legal duty to respond and prevent crime or protect the victim.

There have BEEN OVER 10 various supreme and state court cases the individual has never won.

Notably, the Supreme Court STATED about the responsibility of police for the security of your family and loved ones is "You, and only you, are responsible for your security and the security of your family and loved ones.

That was the essence of a U.S. Supreme Court decision in the early 1980's when they ruled that the police do not have a duty to protect you as an individual, but to protect society as a whole."

SOLUTION 2: Bounties on Pirates!
First of all, I must say that I totally agree with Mike Adams, the author of this piece we are all commenting on. Crews need to be armed and to be allowed to fire upon these pirates with live ammo. No more firehoses, for God's sake!

And crews need to adopt procedures and equipment to allow them to KNOW IN ADVANCE when they are being approached and/or boarded, so they can have their weapons at the ready when the thugs approach at a distance, or (God forbid)come pourng over the railings.

BUT I HAVE ANOTHER SOLUTION TO BE USED CONCURRENTLY...

Guys like "will" who posted here early on, quotes AP for saying that this action was a victory for his hero, Obama. Yet AP also has an "in" with the Somali pirates, and quoted them, namely a pirate leader named ABDULLAHI LAMI, and another named JAMAC HABEB, as saying they will take revenge against America for killing their fellow pirates. They will make America weep next time they hijack an American vessel, by killing all on board, or words to that effect.

WE NEED TO PUT BOUNTIES ON THESE GUYS' HEADS!
(see next post)

Oh, please!
Obama is such a hero?! Yes, he did give the military authorization to use force if the captain's life was in danger. However, their standard rules of engagement (ROE) already give that authorization if there's imminent loss of innocent life possible. It's nice to have the President's go-ahead, but in this case it was pretty much superfluous.

When Weapons are Banned

Only Criminals and Pirates have weapons.

adams
i guess you are shemp?

Obama the hero?
Using common sense is not heroic, it's the minimum expected performance. Telling the Navy to kill the pirates and save the hostage is what should have happened before the Destroyer arrived on station. These people are only different from terrorists in that their motives are geared toward money rather than spreading mayhem and death. Otherwise, they are just as brutal and sadistic as the terrorists. The only reason they take hostages is to get ransom money from them.

Seawolf
RE: "Why would you be against arming the crew?
A lot of these guys are ex military, they are trained in the use of weapons."

It's okay with me if the merchant seamen carry their own weapons if the ship owners are okay with it. I just believe the task of combat on the high seas should be left to our navy (that's what they're trained for), rather than everybody going around "doing their own thing."

Get ready for the MSM to demand
the names of the Navy Seal snipers who took out the scumbag pirates. How long do you think it will be before some liberal media puke demands to know the names of the snipers so they can be asked questions like "how did it feel to murder a poor Somali just trying to make a living"? The FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) claims for the information will be forthcoming, you can bet on it.

In my view, the names of these Seals should be considered highly classified. If their identities become public knowledge, their safety will be put at severe risk of reprisals by allies of the pirate scum. Any "journalist" who reveals the identity of these guys should get the same shot to the head the pirates received.

a
You REALLY REALLY REALLY need to stop!!! You sound like such a fool. I am making the suggestion for your own good, seriously! How does ANY of what you wrote give anyone the right to highjack a ship? You really need to shut up until you can give a logical response to that question.

will
You instantly lose credibility by citing the AP and that freaking idiot George Commieopolois! All of you are apologists for Osama, giving him credit for finally acting.

I can't believe that you jackass liberats tolerate the fact that he has broken the majority of his campaign promises, installing former lobbyists and tax cheats in key cabinet positions! These people are no better than the bankers and Wall Streeters that you villify! What a bunch of lousy hypocrites!

If I were a captain
If I were a ship captain, you'd bet that not only would my crew be armed, but they would be spending afloat time practicing.

We're not dealing with Jack Sparrow and his (mostly) honorable band of "pirates." We're dealing with blood-thirsty criminals on the high seas who are only distinguished from Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, Henry Morgan, or Bartholomew Roberts, by technology and name recognition.

Jim_OK #13: "It only took 5 days to get
around to letting the Armed Forces solve this problem."

And you're right... "this wasn't done on day one was they were under orders NOT to."

"That looks damned weak, and weakness is always rewarded with more aggression." but it's just MORE weakness and embarrassment.

Notice that Obozo didn't authorize the Navy to do rescue Phillips until AFTER Sarkozy dispatched the French commandos to rescue the family on the yacht!

How ridiculous! Obozo had to have the French step up to the plate before he did a damn thing!!!

Ovomit and his supporters
trying to take credit for this operation is beyond the pale!

As a Spec. Ops. vet I can tell you first hand about rescue operations. When called into a problem the first thing that is done is size up the situation and form a plan. Once that plan is finalized the White House is contacted and told that we're ready to go. And awaiting the OK.

Depending on the the size and scale of an operation dictates the time in planning. For instance, going into a hostile foreign country to rescue hostages held at an embassy may take days of planning. In some cases, months.

But for a simple open and shut case like these little pirates, a plan would be formulated within a couple of hours. And the president told we're ready to go.

Any delay on this is is because the White House (Ovomit) does not give the authorization to go.

Peter
a Browning 7mm magnum should be good at a distance, but yup, a good old .308 like the M14 would also be a great choice!

In fact, we could take a, will and Dr. Dingwad out to a field, give 'em a head start of about 200 yards, then...

Thanks Michigander
I agree it's the Navy's job, my only point is that it takes awhile for them to respond and then we wind up as we did.
I had a thought about deterring pirates from climbing the sides.
Install a piping system at the gunwales and hook it up to a steam generator on deck....I've climbed many a pilot ladder in my time and believe me no-one is coming aboard while being sprayed with live steam at around 600 degs.
Cheap too relative to losing the ship or a crewman.

Also it would pre-cook them, the sharks would appreciate it.

Good story as usual. Here in Western NC, we jokingly refer to dynomite for fishing as "red stick bait". Top Sail Island on the coast of NC was named for the "top sails" of Black Beard`s pirate ships lying in wait in the now intra coastal waterway as seen from ships passing by offshore. I agree whole-heartedly that we should arm ourselves offshore; afterall, when seconds count, the Coast Guard is only hours away! Jim

"Funny
how the liberals here treat our military with disdain until a liberal president needs them "

Exactly! suddenly they are not baby killing torturers.

Maybe now Pelosi will let them put a retired navy vessal in SF harbor. Maybe the Dems wont try to keep recruiters and ROTC off high school and university campuses. Maybe we shouldnt hold our breath waiting for such things to happen.
One last thing , how long before we hear they only shot the "alleged" pirates because they were black!

The crew members ...
are REAL Americans who did for THEMSELVES what had to be done. So much for the "dial 911 and die" types that are so common in today's world.
I would not hesitate to be armed (regardless of "official" company policy or "international maritime regulation").
Today's typical American citizen could learn a lot from the ship's crew and the U S military--sometimes it is necessary to "take things into your own hands" and DO THE RIGHT THING.
I wonder how many of the somalian "pirates" and supporters were brought into this country by these "church groups" and are living among us.
What ever happened to the "letters of marque" that were issued in times past? The concept could be revived by offering the shipping companies "tax breaks" as well as "immunity from prosecution". This "immunity from prosecution" would be valid because the ship's crew would be acting as "agents of the U S government.

michigander: "I just believe the task of

combat on the high seas should be left to our navy (that's what they're trained for), rather than everybody going around 'doing their own thing.'"

By "doing their own thing" do you mean "protecting themselves????

Hmmm.... I hope not!

It's "nice" when other countries "like us" but our real concern should be about those countries and "groups" that are NOT a country (al Qaeda and the pirates, etc.) who don't like us.

I'm not for going around nuking countries, but Coulter did remind us ... "... the Japanese haven't acted up much in the last, say, 64 years ... "

"WTF?
First, the recent rise in piracy shouldn't surprise you. They have no government, and their coast is being poached by international trollers. Top that off with a healthy load of nuclear waste being dumped in Somali waters resulting in mass poisoning."

I'm really disapointed that it took 78 posts before someone put it out there that we are at fault for the pirates actions. What is wrong with us as a people?
Why cant we get to know these fine people, about the only thing i know about them is that they dragged a corpse through the streets during black hawk down. I'm sure deep down, when they arent strung out on Katt that they are fine folks.

Seawolf: I like your idea about a

"piping system at the gunwales and hook it up to a steam generator on deck...." and pre-cooking" the pirates. :-)

Poor sharks... they probably need a hot meal!

But I see nothing wrong with training the crew to use side arms.

Typical Liberal Feelings

"...yet try to understand what the root cause is so it can be addressed..."

Liberals 'Feel' that there is 'NO Evil' in the world, only 'Causes' that make humans act evilly.

This is partially true, as is most Liberal thinking - dealing with 'Root Causes' is important generally, but NOT specifically or individually.

Liberals feel, that when your home, boat etc. is invaded, the 'First Line of Defense' should be to understand the 'Root Cause', of what made the invader come into your home or boat etc.

Liberals feel, that the second line of defense should be to inform the 'Proper Government Authorities', so that counselors can be dispatched to work with the invader(s) to help them overcome the 'Root Cause' of their problems.

Once the Liberals understand what the 'Root Cause' of the home, boat etc. is 'Understood', then Liberals can place the invader(s) in the 'Proper' Government funded programs, to help the invader(s) overcome their victim hood.

Liberals have NO sympathy or solutions for the victims - they only have 'Empathy' for the invader(s) and their victim hood.

The Bloke Strikes Again
From the irresistible pen of the rascal, Mark Steyn...

"Once upon a time we killed and captured pirates. Today, it’s all more complicated. The attorney general, Eric Holder, has declined to say whether the kidnappers of the American captain will be “brought to justice” by the U.S. “I’m not sure exactly what would happen next,” declares the chief law-enforcement official of the world’s superpower. But some things we can say for certain. Obviously, if the United States Navy hanged some eyepatched peglegged blackguard from the yardarm or made him walk the plank, pious senators would rise to denounce an America that no longer lived up to its highest ideals, and the network talking-heads would argue that Plankgate was recruiting more and more young men to the pirates’ cause, and judges would rule that pirates were entitled to the protections of the U.S. constitution and that their peglegs had to be replaced by high-tech prosthetic limbs at taxpayer expense.

Meanwhile, the Royal Navy, which over the centuries did more than anyone to rid the civilized world of the menace of piracy, now declines even to risk capturing their Somali successors, having been advised by Her Majesty’s Government that, under the European Human Rights Act, any pirate taken into custody would be entitled to claim refugee status in the United Kingdom and live on welfare for the rest of his life. I doubt Pirates of the Caribbean would have cleaned up at the box office if the big finale had shown Geoffrey Rush and his crew of scurvy sea dogs settling down in council flats in Manchester and going down to the pub for a couple of jiggers of rum washed down to cries of “Aaaaargh, shiver me benefits check, lad.” From “Avast, me hearties!” to a vast welfare scam is not progress."

Somalia, Islam and jihad
Whenever you offend a muslim beware of retaliation that is the sword they want to hold over all nations. Regardless of how disgusting any muslim is when one is attack they band together like souuthside Chicago gangs.
I would carefully watch the muslim communities in New York, Minnesota, North Carolina, and elsewhere because their allegiance is to Islam not our country. CAIR will jump all over this to show my point.Good for you, Mike.

OK by me
As a hard core conservative I am pleased with the outcome of this particular hostage situation. All of the Americans are safe, no ransom was paid, and there are three fewer terrorists for whom we have to worry about finding a safe, humane place to detain until they can get a stupid jury trial in a US civilian court for crimes committed in international waters where that same US civilian court has NO JURISDICTION.

Now the only thing we have to worry about is if the equally stupid International Criminal Court will accuse our sailors of some kind of war crime for rescuing an American citizen taken hostage by terrorists.

Can you imagine what the ICC would be doing if the Law of the Sea Treaty had been ratified?

Finally, given the threats to murder civilian crews made by Somali pirates who haven't been killed or captured, what are the civilized nations of the world doing to prevent any more ships and crews from being pirated in the first place?

Pelosi
James B, It will take a lot more than one military success for Mme Pelosi to welcome a retired Navy vessel into SF harbor. It will take the opposite, the complete capitulation of the policies that restrict or discourage homosexual participation in the Navy. When teh USS Rainbow is commissioned, it will be welcome in SF Harbor. Not before.

a
"Yes, these guys are thugs and should be resisted. However, most of these pirates began as fishermen who formed their own militia style coast guard. Once it became apparent that they would no longer be able to survive as fishermen, they sided with the warlords and switched to all-out piracy. "

I see, their choice in life was 1. fisherman
2. pirate.
If the US didnt dump waste or take their fish why are they attacking our ships? I thought electing Obama was going to end all this stuff. Didnt they get the memo that the world is supposed to love us now?

Anne from PA et al

Barack Obama feels that 'Disarming' the citizenry and the 'Military', will bring 'Strength' and 'Safety' to America.

How surprising that Adams doesn't unders
Adams doesn't understand this subject for the same reason he doesn't understand most subjects. He does not deal with reality a lot. But he does have the benefit of a tenured job to protect him from dealing with reality.

To start with the basics, businesses generally act to make a profit. It would be possible for all shipping to simply avoid going near Somalia, but it would be very expensive for ships to go that far out of their way, and companies that did so would not make a profit. Similarly companies that accompanied their ships with the kind of firepower needed to combat pirates would also have higher expenses than those that lose a small share of their ships to piracy.

Adams avoids this by indicating that he believes he and his friends would be great pirate hunters if he was a sailor. And I am sure in that he shares the view of my 5 year old who also likes playing with guns. But actual businesses have to deal with reality rather than adolescent fantasies. That seems to be the point that Adams doesn't understand.

Last Paragraph
The last paragraph pretty much summed it up.

Why any private vessel does not arm itself these days is beyond me.

Less Fancy Weapons
Mike is going first class with his Browning. I think my two Remington 710s, with the little Rossi Matched Pair Shotgun would be enough, especially if I had two security studs on board with me. The 710s are affordable, durable, and have sniper like range. The Rossi you will have on hand for a child in case of emergency. It handles like a toy gun, no crash course required.

And, of course, you will need a .22 or better for close range. Mike, we can't all be Dirty Harry.

Truly, Lon?
Lon said:

"...Similarly companies that accompanied their ships with the kind of firepower needed to combat pirates would also have higher expenses than those that lose a small share of their ships to piracy. ..."

Honestly, Lon? Have you run the cost-benefit analysis on that, or are you just assuming that it must be true? I would like the see the run-down of the weapons + training versus ships + ransom that would yield this cost benefit.

Just a thought
If there are nations that want our aid but will not allow our ships sufficient arms to defend against piracy, then we shouldn't go there. They want us to come to "their" humanitarian rescue but put "us" in harms way? Unacceptable!

Mike Adams - don't be moronic
You have obviously never been to sea. The idea of arming your crew with handguns is preposterous. There is not a Captain at sea who would want that scenario. Sailers do not stay sober at all times.

US Code, Article 46 can be modified (by the US Congress) to allow merchant marine ships to arm themselves. Hire Gunnery Mates as ships company and hang hardware fore and aft, port and starboard. Keep handguns under lock and key while underway.

Yet ANOTHER monumental failure....
...by our Failure in Cheif.

Der Fuhrer Obama is, WITHOUT A DOUBT, the worst excuse for a leader this planet has ever seen. Pirates hifack an American ship, and his response? "We need to understand why these freedom fighters are attacking us!" Yeah, great job, bucko. It wasn't until several days later, as public pressure mounted, until he FINALLY gave the captian of the Navy destroyer permission to decide whether to rescue the captian of the hijacked ship. Yes, that's right. Obama DIDN'T decide to rescue the hostage. He deferred to an underling.

This is how much of a MONUMENTAL failure our Lord and Savior is: A day or two after being taken hostage, the captian was able to escape his captors. Unfortunately, Obama had given orders to the Destroyer NEVER to fire on the pirates in the life raft they were hiding in, so while they had ample opportunity to blast the pirates and then rescue the hostage, our Lord and Savior ordered them to stand down and recapture their hostage so that the standoff could last another few days.

Can anyone -- anyone at all -- name JUST ONE thing that our Lord and Savior has done since his coup began that HASN'T been a MONUMENTAL disaster? Anyone at all?

Armed crew members
Mike, I think you're wrong on this one.

I've taken four container ship cruises. On one of the cruises we were boarded by pirates in Santos, Brazil. They emptied a container of Mary Kay perfume.

The Captain told me that several years before, his ship had been boarded by pirates in in South East Asian waters.

I asked him why some of his crew was not armed. His reply was "we are merchant seamen, not police officers."

Whenever we were in pirate infested waters, there were always lookouts on duty and the crew was prepared to repel boarders with fire hoses. The boarding in Santos occurred while we were in port and no one was on lookout duty.

I'm a former law enforcement officer who also loves the Sig your friend carries, but I believe fire hoses can be as effective as firearms to repel boarders.

Such sarcasm! Do you have any genuine gun knowledge to contribute?

One of My Gun Stories

I received the highest awards in the Army for both the M-14, AR-16 and .45 Caliber Pistol.

I felt I was especially good with the .45 and entered several contests, winning several and placing well on others.

I entered a .45 fast draw 'Bowling Pin' contest where some Border Patrol agents were also involved.

I left early that morning and told my wife it would probably late afternoon before I returned, dependent on how I did.

When I returned in about an hour, my wife asked "Why so early?"

I said I would rather play Michael Jordan 'One on One' basket ball, than compete with those guys.

I have never witnessed such shooting in my life!!!!!!!!!!

Will they be tried for war crimes?

Wilmington is a drug-infested town. I'll keep my guns. You may kiss my guntotingass.

JUST A THOUGHT
Wouldn't it be really fun to arm ships in that area? Hummm...

I can just see a fire fight breaking out on a tanker. Unless the crew is really suicidal, and most merchant seamen are not, they are going to surrender rather than blow themselves up.

Cargo ships and tankers run on minimal crews. The cargo ship in question had a crew of 20+? spread over 3 shifts to keep the ship operating and relying on radar to avoid collisions with ships. They will not see either visually or on radar fiber glass boats of pirates.

A better idea would be for the navy to have live fire exercises off the Somali coast for a few years.

Pansies & NBCing it
The good professor is right, of course. I've a half-dozen or so o' them Brinks home security ads. In every case the intruder is white! What are the odds? And in all the cop shows on TV (and several of the cops look more than a little foppish) whenever ther's a hostage situation, even when there are skilled marksmen so close they could shoot the eyelashes off the perp, one by one, they never do. Here's a new term: "NBCing it." They always jawbone the perp to death, always allowing him more time to murder the hostage. If va few cops and the hostage are killed but the perp save, it is considered a "win" This is the way the LEFT thinks. Any wonder the mess we're in? -- Snooper

American Somali Pirates?

"WASHINGTON (AFP) April 10, 2009 — American recruits of Somali extremists addressed a press conference in the conflict-wracked country this week to rally other youths to join their jihad (holy war), a US monitoring group said Friday.

On April 5, "two American members of the Mujahideen Youth Movement (MYM) identified as Abu-Muslim and Abu Yaxye" spoke at the news conference and acknowledged that "many" Somali-Americans are "all over Somalia to join the jihad," said the SITE Intelligence Group.

The pair said they are "Somali youth" from the United States and are stationed near the southern port of Kismayo.

"Some of us are still in training, others are on the frontline of the jihad. Sadly a few of us are dead, one of whom carried out a suicide bombing," said Abu Muslim, as translated by Omar Jamal, executive director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

"We came from the US with a good life and a good education, but we came to fight alongside our brothers of (militant youth Islamic group) Shebab ... to be killed for the sake of God," one of the pair said, according to SITE.

Last month the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned US lawmakers that "radicalized clusters" of Somali-American youths as young as 12 were being recruited by Islamic terror groups."

Mr. Adams is talking about something more than a little trip on the lake to catch a few crappies. An excursion on the high seas calls for deterrent protection. I don't think his group are trigger-happy haters like those Waco ATF agents.

Time to move our ports
For liberals, admitting the self-defense principle on the High Seas begs the question why one can't have the same arrangement on land.

How did I know that you would take it to mean that?

NO-it was my way of saying that YOU have no room to criticize.

Sorry, bud, I can't get into it with you today--I have a real job, not trolling.

Is this the test that Biden mentioned?
Shortly after the election, and before the new President took office, Vice President Elect Joe Biden said cryptically that the "world" was going to test Barak OBlahBlah. So what test was he talking about? Was this situation set up to *prove* that Mr. Obama may actually have something between his legs, unlike former Democrat Presidents?

So what if a couple of terrorists end up looking like swiss cheese? After all, they are now enjoying the company of a virginal harem in the sky.

Pirate Solution
The solution to this problem is quite simple and has been successfully employed down through history. When confronted by an enemy you kill all of them, follow them home to their lair and kill all the rest. When all your enemies are dead you have no more enemies. This principal which seems to be lost on the new Obamanation Administration will soon be most evident as the US is attacked anew.

No, Mike
I hardily recommend sailors arming themselves to deter pathetic raft pirates from getting their way against gigantic ships.

However, arming sailors with guns will not result in the solution for piracy, any more than cannons and the like proved to be the solution for piracy centuries ago.

Probably closer to the solution is what Thomas Jefferson did: go after the pirates resolutely wherever they are! Kill them wherever they are found, and brook no faux compassion for them. But even then, no solution would be found, as they're still with us today.

Piracy, like murder and rape, can be controlled, but never seemingly solved, as it is engrained in the human condition.

MYOB
Adams:
"I also understand that Captain Phillips’ intentions were good – after all, he was on a charitable mission. But he had no business endangering a crew of twenty by placing them in harms way without sufficient firepower. "

Mr. Adams, you are not a cargo ship captain, you are an English teacher. Do not presume to tell the good Captain what his business is. It wasn't really his business to offer himself up as a hostage either, but he did so.

It is in fact not in the captain's power to arm his men and his ship, that is the province of the ships owners. Like yourself, I don't understand why they do not do so. As late as yesterday (4/12 5pm) NPR's All Things Considered reported that the owners of some shipping countries viewed this as an 'undesirable idea'. Vent your spleen on them if that turns you on.

OTOH, this AM NPR's Morning Edition reported that some ships owners are considering putting 'private security personnel' on board their tankers in that area.

Piracy
WHY, any ship that goes anywhere that there might be pirates which isn't armed to the teeth is beyond silly IMHO. I've heard that marine shipping insurance is higher if the ship is armed, and that the Somali pirates will now kill American crews. If the former is a deterrent to arming crews the latter should be a better reason to arm them.

Couldn't American flag ships put on professional security teams in areas where there are pirates? It wouldn't take too many people in a well armed security team to thwart pirates.

Anyone who feels that shooting pirates, robbers, rapists, or other criminals who are attacking a ship, a home, or a person going about their lawful business is bad and that guns are bad is beneath contempt. They shouldn't expect anyone to come to their aid if they're not ready to aid themselves.

a
Deterrence. Sort of like pilots packing heat in the cockpit, which BHO wanted to ban but decided not to due to public outcry. Despite 9-11, the odds are still low that their plane will get attacked. Even lower if they are armed.

Our opinions differ on the appropriateness of the boaters' arms. I think it is reasonable. It is not as if they are mounting a Vulcan on board.

Fisherwoman To "Fishermen"

As I have already related, there are, at least, two types of fish that CAN KILL YOU...

1) Reel in a shark and see if it TAKES A BITE OUT OF YOU given the opportunity;

and)

2) Reel in a marlin and see if the SPEAR does not, in fact, pose a grave danger to human life, if it hits in head, neck, chest or torso.

In the Bisbee's Black And Blue Tourney not too many years ago down in Cabo San Lucas, I came very close to being SPEARED IN THE HEAD. Now, the captain WAS DRUNK ON TEQUILA, but I was very grateful that he was ARMED WITH A SHOTGUN.

In addition, I know a man, who was fishing for Marlin off of the coast of Louisiana, when he was SPEARED THROUGH THE THROAT. When the Medi-vac arrived, the techs cut the SPEAR loose from the Marlin. My friend was actually Medivac'd to the hospital with the SPEAR STICKING THROUGH HIS THROAT!

Having said all of this, I have already said that Adams' description of his typical fishing jaunts sounds a lot like the scene when Crocodile Dundee goes fishing off of Manhattan.

Heck, I am even for arming while playing golf! About a decade ago, a man actually DIED after being bitten by the private club "pet".

Somali Piracy
Apropos solutions:
A layered approach is best. There should first be a UN mandate that all aggression by Somalia and its citizens releases other countries' military to exterminate the pirates at will. A coordinated effort would be preferable, of course, but niceties must be set aside. Another mandate, more draconian, would be that ALL vessels from Somalia may not venture more than three miles from shore or risk being blown up (no searches and other time wasters). Somalia has an extensive coastline so blockading over a long period is probably not do-able. A one time sweep of the whole coastline to destroy all sea going vessels might be a tad easier but it would have to be repeated every six months or so. Privatizing the periodic hunt and destroy missions would be easier than send in expensive warships to do the job. All alleged atrocities from Somalia would be totally disregarded by the world (and maybe even applauded in some circles). That government has no moral standing whatsoever. Private security on targeted shipping is also desirable. Lastly, serious, smart, and sane Nation rebuilding needs to occur in that god forsaken country. Probably a 30 year plan directly tied to oversight and properly functioning government.

Lon
Similarly companies that accompanied their ships with the kind of firepower needed to combat pirates would also have higher expenses than those that lose a small share of their ships to piracy.

Apparently you understand the set number of pirates that the pirating union designates that should be sufficient for attacking a ship??
Your comment above is beautiful for illustrating the mind of a liberal.
So what you are saying is "go ahead and take the losses oh shipping companies"
Its much more expensive to selectively hire 3-4 security sharpshooters when travelling through dangerous waters.......

Do you understand how much firepower is needed to accompany these ships??
Experienced in pirating are you???
You don't think that 15-20 well placed shots (ie taking out several pirates) at a boat intent on attacking a large vessel is not going to deter them?

YOu must like pirating.....

uh oh....
Pentagon: Shootings could deter pirates.

Great post! Thanks for the tally - please keep us informed (as the losses increase)

The AUDACITY of 'the one' to try to take credit for this NAVY rescue is simply falling right into line with his ME ME ME agenda! (though I did hear that Michelle told him to get lost, the egg hunt was HERS!)

Never have written words scared me as much as what 'the one' had the AUDACITY to publish in his stories of his life! To think the mainstream media and so many voters FAILED to look into his background saddens me as I watch him destroy our beautiful country day by day.

Send In Cynthia McKinney!
Keep in mind that the vessel was loaded with humanitarian aid aimed for Kenya. Yes, we got the vessel and crew, but the pirates are saying AAARGH! The US be the real terrorists.

So, instead of SEALs and drones, and in an effort to be cognizant of the hijackers' Civil Rights, I say:

Send in Cynthia McKinney to negotiate.

Send in ACORN to organize the poor of Eyl.

Send in the Progressives, socialists and income redistributionists so as to convince the pirates, who made $100M last year, to share their wealth.

Send in the SEIU to protest in front of the pirates' estates.

Send in the ACLU to ensure that the Somali pirates have access to the International Human Rights Commission rather than the Shari'a courts in Somalia.

Send in the CBC people to say that Somalia is a wonderland, with benevolent pirates, who are only friends that we have never met.

Send in the Gay Marriage Proponents because homosexuals in Somalia are being discriminated against routinely.

Send in the Atheists to argue that Shari'a is unfairly supplanting the role of Government.

Send in Rev. Al Sharpton to lie about something.

Send in Rev. Joseph Lowery to blame the "white man" because the pirates are being kept at the bus, pushcart, Mother Ship, etc.

Send in Joe Biden to just be Joe Biden. Gallows' laughter, ya' know?

Send in Barack Obama to apologize for everything.

When the United States of America was DECISIVE. Probably not, but here is a number, 1945. The "WIMPS", The "Waxmans(D)", in our country have become so worried about a tree getting knocked down or other collateral damage that even when America is attacked we can no longer defend ourselves. Here is my solution for those Muslim Terrorist("Man Caused Disasters")or Somali Pirates. I would Bow down like the Prez, get up off my knees, and tell the Muslims if you capture an American Ship anywhere on the high seas, I will drop bombs on your country until they are realeased. If one American is killed, I will consider it an act of war and will let the dogs out. In the world of the Wimps/Waxmans(D) there is a reaction to every action. That does not sound right...R before A??

Dr. Adams
how radical! In the same vein, a friend told me recently that her husband was purchasing a home security system. I asked her if it was an automatic or a revolver. She looked at me oddly.

There are really two solutions
1.) Arm our ships and crews on the high seas and allow our citizens to defend themselves and their cargoes.

2.) Tell all those pathetically dirt poor countries like Kenya and Somalia, that they don't get another single morsel of food until they completely solve their piracy problem.

The real problem began when shipping companies started to actually pay off these Somalian pirates. When will the shipping companies wake up and smell the coffee and realize that paying off these thugs to get their shipments through only emboldens and encourages more attacks?

No negotiation, no payoffs, no ransoms paid, that's a start.

Marc

Solutions to Somali Pirates.
Warning, this is tongue in cheek so don't ask for me to be keel hauled if you don't agree.

1. Since the Somali pirates ask for $2M in ransom to release a ship, post a bounty of $1M for any somali pirate ship which is sunk. Doesn't matter who sinks it. That would be half the price of dealing with the pirates.

2. Somali cab drivers at the Minneapolis/St.Paul airport refused to pick up any fares where the traveler had a dog, including seeing eye dogs, or any alcoholic beverages in their possession. So, we put guard dogs and beer on the commercial vessels which sail within 400 miles of the Somalian coast.

I also agree that we tell any country which says we cannot have arms on our merchant ships to pound sand. Let's refuse to enter their ports until they rescind such dangerous regulations.

Always be ready to make any predator
very sorry and afraid to attack in any context; that is the only way to maintain decent society. Any inmate will confirm this truth.

The reason violent crime has increased exponentially in scope and severity over the past couple of decades is that we explain it away and tolerate it- thereby enabling it. The "root cause" movement has produced a populace fraught with displaced compassion and cowardice, and it is reflected in the societal decay we now enjoy. Its odd- people are simultaneously more passive and yet more brutal; yet the brutality is reserved to be exacted upon society's decent, hardworking people. Creepy and backward, those "progressives"!

Steam pipes blasting down from the gunwales is a GREAT IDEA!

Tertium quid
The U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard are certainly trained and equipped for dispatching pirates to hell, but they can't -- and shouldn't -- be everywhere. Shipping companies ought to do more in their own defense, but one can understand their reluctance to arm potential mutineers. Fortunately, there are many reliable private security companies. I'm sure that the artists formerly known as Blackwater, for example, would do a good job of protecting merchant vessels.

My parents had a '57 Chevy Bel-Air when I was growing up. It was so ugly it showed up on radar, but it was virtually indestructible.

As for someone making off with my teevee. . .gosh, that's a tough one. There's not much worth watching anymore. But for exercise, I'd probably save the ammo, chase him down, and make him wish that I'd shot him. I'm not so fast as I used to be, but a boob tube is a formidable handicap.

DailyKos Kook Attacks Heroic Capt. Phillips

April 13th, 2009 by Matthew Vadum

"You have to wonder what is running through the minds of some of the kooks at the extreme-left DailyKos website.

Amazingly, one America-hating Kossack who goes by the handle “KLS” actually denounced rescued Maersk Alabama Captain Richard Phillips for “recklessly put[ting] himself, the crew, and the Navy Seals at unnecessary risk.” In a piece that was spotlighted at RealClearPolitics"

The Daily Kos crew seem to believe the Captain waa at fault for the whole situation and was personally responsible. The Captain endangered the seals according to the Kos whack jobs.

HMMMMM
If the rest of the world acted like the US in responding to these terrorists, we would not have to worry about this.

Problem is, right now, Pirating is a lucrative business.....paid for by the rest of the world.

question:
Why are pirates so mean???

Answer: Because they arrrrrr.

hey Paelocon
We had a chevy too. I think it was a 55(?). Green with a white roof. My mother said she liked it cause it was taller than the other cars and she could it easily spot it in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot!

Is Mike's house in Wilmington in the "middle of the Atlantic"? Wow! Impressive. Or am I missing something here because I'd like to visit sometime.

"Or is there a possiblity that one of them may be a violent drug offender?"..."you never know when the next violent shooting rampage may break out."

I'd ask to come visit you too, a in TX, but I see you've already got company.

Gun Control
This perfectly illustrates the liberal view regarding gun control. Imagine a world where you are busy conducting business of delivery of goods, goods that have value and your manner of conveyance has great value. Everywhere about you are bad people with guns who desire to take your goods and even your life, you have by law no guns. Man what a nightmare, oh wait that is exactly what the left has in mind for us. Welcome to the future.

You know a few AR14's in the hands of men would have made this event a small footnote.

Mike, Great article

Arms Locker
Why on Earth can't they outfit each cargo ship with an arms locker, give the crew basic weapons training, and give the key to the captain?

Are they really pirates?
I would like some investigation into who these people are, and where their money goes. You know, the Muslim angle. I would even bring this up, except that the MSM has a poor track record when it comes to calling a terrorist a terrorist.

Verbivore
The '55s are much better-looking than '57s. I'd like to restore a '55 someday.

Before the Chevy we had a green Studebaker Commander. It wouldn't do 0-60 in a month, but it contained more metal than a Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

Through them all, my father held onto a Ford F-1. Wish he hadn't sold it. It's probably still running somewhere.

When you outlaw guns (on ships)...
...only outlaws will have guns.

MILITARY TRAINING
Nothing like some live targets for the military to hone their skills. Launch some predators off navy ships in the area and let the pilots back home sink every suspected pirate ship. It probably wouldn't take long for the prirates to decide to stay home in Mog and drink.

Obama Lied Pirates Died
You know I must have missed Code Stink protesting the use of force against peaceful Somali pirates! Maybe the news just forgot to run it in-between their cocainebarry saved the economy pieces and the animals are better than people segment. But if the Code Stink people were out here protesting they surly would be saying that Obama Lied and People Died! after all those pirates never hurt any of their prisoners in the past and this has to be just another way for the war profiteers in the Democratic Party to get rich while oppressing poor black fisherman! I wonder if now that the pirates will take revenge against the horrible Americans that the Code Stink will point out that cocainebarry made things worse and the new violence against shipping is a direct result of his arrogance and abuse of power. I think it’s high time he should be tried for war crimes, and reasonable people should start a petition to impeach this loser! LOL Heck maybe we can get some erudite snobby liberals in a jerkwater Vermont town to issue a warrant for the arrest of Obama and Biden since they lied to the American people about the Capitan’s life being in danger! I can see the posters now. Stop the Imperialist from Oppressing the Somali Pirates! The bottom line is according to the liberals for the last eight years is that piracy is only going to get worse now because of Obama’s cowboy policies. Impeach Obama!

Pirate Jokes:
"Why are pirates so mean???

Answer: Because they arrrrrr. "

A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel inserted in his butt. The bartender asks, "What's with the steering wheel, Mate?"

The pirate replies, "Arrr, evry landlubber I see keeps askin' me. It's drivin' me nuts".

ARE WE TO BELIEVE
Our Navy was deployed to rescue a Ship and it's American crew but ordered to 'stand down' until the 'one' found time to say 'ready, set go'?
Must be the 'one's' same strategy of having our Military 'stand down' while Iran builds nukes, North Korea launches missles, Russia sends War Ships to visit Venezuala and Hamas builds up it's arsenal with our taxpayer money the 'one' gave them.
Are we to believe the 'one' will wait to say 'ready, set go' AFTER nuclear bombs go off here at home and in Israel?

Gun Haters in a Quandry.
Some of the gun haters in America, who probably tended to vote for Obama/Biden, must be in a fix.

"Yeah, Obama saved the shipping Captain from the pirates. Isn't he magnificent?"

"But wait. He told the Navy Seals to shoot the pirates with icky guns and they did it. They used violence to stop violence. The solution to violence and guns is not more violence and guns, is it? The pirates had guns. The Navy Seals used their guns to stop the gun toting pirates. Is that OK with us? Shouldn't we be angry instead of happy with the Great One?"

"Oh, never mind. Let's celebrate. Yeah, the Great One saved the Captain from the pirates and passed his first TEST. Isn't he a great President?"

Sharing the wealth...
..is all that is going on. Obama's issue with the pirates is that they aren't unionized so an annuitized political contribution to demoncrats isn't formalized. He's not getting his cut. However, if the pirates do unionize that will kill the productivity incentive. So to solve the piracy issue force them to join a union.

fred
Adams' final solution
A young guy in my state last week shot to death all five of his children, his wife, and then himself.

Yup. What we really need are more guns, because if you read the press from the last two weeks you can see how many pirates we kept off the shores of California.
...........
Not to long ago a woman in my state drowned her three kids in a bath tub. I say outlaw all bath tubs.

idiot

How 'bout......
letting a bunch of us retired military guys sail about on these ships for free? We get a refresher course on the M2 .50 cal hmg and are on call anytime there is a threat. We are not crew so we can't mutiny. We are not active duty so there are no rules of engagement to worry about. We are not employees so we are not paid--all we cost the ship is the chow and laundry (and ammo if and when needed). My wife would love to go with me, too. She can load as I lay it on the pirates.

My guess is you would have a line from Norfolk to Chicago of guys and gals who want to get that job.

While it's important to arm and train the crew with small arms, that's not nearly enough to defend against pirate attacks. To have a real chance the crew would need hardpoints scattered about the ship and much larger weapons.

Great idea. And if the line from Norfolk to Chicago starts in Norfolk, I'll be near the front.

Jr-10 & Fred - Final Solution

I kid you not, but last week, a ZOMBIE walked over to his best friend's front yard and took a bite out of his amigo's arm. He is now in the Zombie Ward in the Orleans Parish Prison.

I say we outlaw all teeth!

You first need GOOD intel!!!!!!
BAD intel gets you deaded fast. You need to have drones in the air 24/7 like the Global Hawk. The loiter time is insane. That way the crew would know if a "mothership" is approaching and set up a date with Ma Deuce for the tykes.

Already solved...
I think that the Navy solved this problem already. We should handle future problems the same way. I'm guessing that the pirates won't target a US ship again.

Solution to Somali Piracy
I am a liberal, but on this issue I couldn't agree more with Professor Adams. Given the reality of the situation all commercial ships traveling in these waters need to be armed and to attack offensively if necessary.

Ooh, you are so sexy - not

Remember when we were decisive. 1945!!!!

Ask our allies how decisive we were. They were
pissed that it took us so long to get into the
war.

Somalia = Islam w/out Oil

Islam beheads Gays, beats and stones children to death, spits on women, tolerates no other Religions, loathes the haves, and oppresses the have-not's. It is the culture of cruelty and death.

Yet the stupid Democrats hold hands with these wicked monsters, and spit on Jesus.

Moronic fools.

Common Sense
Common Sense like this just won't float the boat! It is way too simple, too devoid of a labyrinth of bureaucratic DOs and DONTs. All such matters need to be referred to the UN Security Council.

Arming crews...
sounds fine if you're dealing with American seamen on American flagged vessels. However, on a Liberian flagged ship with a Filipino crew, paid next to nothing, it could prove a bad idea. They have absolutely no loyalty to the company beyond their meager pay. They're not going to get themselves killed, and they might well take over the ship if they thought it more profitable..

metosexuality(!)
What does this have to do with the price of tea in China or pirates? Like many conservatives you are flailing around just like a blender full of diarrhea with the top off, hoping something will stick to the wall! If you want to make a point do it and stick to it--don't throw out whatever is in the kitchen sink and completely unrelated to the topic. Here's a question--how many Republican lawyers working for the insurance companies that insure these boats are willing to let untrained people carry guns on board??????????????????????????/

The Historical Pirate Solution
Arming merchant ships is OK. But if you really want to thin these pirates out big time you use the tried and true method of hunting them down and blowing them out of the water. You can use armed decoy ships to draw them in with a Navy ship and aircraft standing off but close enough to hit them hard with little or no warning. Do that for a year and there won’t be many pirates left. If any captives are taken put them in irons and sail into one of the ports where they have their hide-outs hang them from a yardarm and then tar them and leave them hanging from a gibbet at the port entrance like in olden times, i.e. in the days of iron men and wooden ships.

Wait GXM!!
FIRST wrap them in layers of bacon and pig skin THEN tar them and hang them out for buzzard bait.

Somalia
Has no government and the pirates are just bands of individuals operating in communal effort.

Yeah, that was a real test for Mr. Obama. Let's see how he does when it's the Iranian goverment holding hostages, or pointing a nuke at Israel.

You see, there are no reprisals from taking out a Somali pirate, but when there are -- I think he's going to roll over and ask them to scratch his belly the way he did the Saudi king and the G20 leaders.

This was in international waters, so I'm sure we'll be hearing from the transnationalists who object to our defending our people and property in "their" waters.

Please be honest, folks, our merchant vessels are not legally allowed to be armed, which is why this happened. If they were armed, the pirates would think twice, but for now, it's worth their while to come after us. The only reason
