I once had a dog named Jake that I liked very much. He was a well-behaved dog. When I asked him to sit, he would sit. When I asked him to shake, he would shake. When I asked him to stay, he would stay. Because he was so eager for praise and approval, it was easy to control his behavior. That old dog was a lot like the liberals who read my columns.

Because I am very good at predicting the behavior of liberals, I did a very risky thing yesterday by taking credit for an email I did not actually send. It was all part of a little experiment on tolerance and diversity, which has yielded results much like I had predicted.

Those who read yesterday’s column read my spoof apology for an email I claimed I had sent to the Department of Sociology and Criminology at UNC-Wilmington. The email, sent under the subject line “Bin Laden Found!”, had a picture attached which showed the terrorist behind a cash register wearing a “7-11” vest. The responses to my apology were predictable. Here are a few of the highlights:

“You are not a conservative, you are a rude and insensitive bigot.”

“You should resign from your position as a professor immediately. Don’t wait for a conviction for hate speech.”

“You are a complete embarrassment to academia.”

“I hope Al Quada [sic] bombs your office.”

“You are an arrogant bigot.”

“I bet you’re not sorry you fraud. You just don’t want to lose your job.”

“What a childish bigot you are. You’ll get what you deserve. Finally.”

“You are a predicably [sic] racist Republican. Please pardon any redundancy.”

Of course, these are not all of the angry emails I got. But they do summarize the general sentiments of my numerous liberal readers – people who come back to my columns constantly because they are addicted to being angry. And now that I’m about to deliver the punch line of my little joke their anger is about to reach unprecedented heights.

For those who haven’t yet figured it out, I was not the person who sent the racially insensitive email to the entire department. It was actually sent by a self-proclaimed liberal and atheist who, get this, teaches a university course in race relations. And, after sending the email to the entire department, no one (myself included) responded with a denunciation. The reasons for the silence are twofold:

1. The lone conservative on the mailing list recognizes that the First Amendment protects speech that is controversial and inflammatory. If the First Amendment was meant to protect speech that is main stream and uncontroversial it would hardly be necessary.

2. The over two dozen liberals on the email list believe in the selective application of the concept of hate speech. Specifically, they only apply it to speakers they hate such as conservatives and Christians and, of course, conservative Christians. They really have no concern for the groups they claim to be protecting from offense. In other words, hate speech is an objectively meaningless concept created by ideological bigots who are incapable of defending their ideas without government intervention. That is why the same people who support the discriminatory application of speech codes also support the “fairness” doctrine.

The whole problem of speech codes could be solved if we could just find a way to make liberals happy. But that would be harder than finding Osama Bin Laden in a convenience store in New Jersey. So I think we should sue the enforcers of these codes when it is necessary to do so. And we should ridicule them even when it isn’t.

I am glad Morgan mentioned Handicapped
The reason I wanted to comment on Morgan's subject line is that I am a paraplegic and by definition, I am handicapped, or as the liberal's refer to me in politically correct terms as...ahem..."Physically Challenged," a term to which I am more offended by than gimp, cripple, or as one of my former bosses affectionately called me "wheelchair boy." But I went back to work 5 months after my injury and either have worked or gone to school nearly every year since my injury for the last 17 years.

Now that I set that up, I can explain what I meant about picking on the handicapped. Liberals are handicapped by the following: They cannot accept criticism of their ridiculous public policies. They cannot get over the fact that in America, corporations and the capitalist system is the engine that drives the economy and provides jobs. They cannot stand that talk radio is exposing their weaknesses and are doing all they can to shut it down. And they are so angry that they cannot control the way people think that they are handicapped by this rage.

Being a paraplegic, I am a textbook example of a handicapped individual given the term means that any impairment that creates a barrier that interferes with the activities of living everyday life. With that being said, it stands to reason that even as severe as being a paraplegic is a handicapping condition, I believe that I am less handicapped than a liberal simply for the fact that I am happy with my life situation.

The reply e-mails you posted are proof positive that none of the liberals that responded to your "apology" are in a good mood. They are a miserable lot of people and will never be happy unless the conservative movement is crushed beneath the foot of the fairness doctrine. And even then, I don't know if a liberal can be happy as I am sure they will always find something else to complain about.

I have to say Mike that this is one of the best articles you have written. I knew something devious was amiss in your last column and that you were going to spring something big and boy you didn't disappoint.

Liberals are bound to freak when they read this for their double standard to call out anyone right of moderate and simply ignore the rantings of racism, class envy, and other divisive mechanisms when it is one of their own doing the spewing of negativity.

Liberal bigots, especially the atheist who "teaches" the "race realtions class" (chuckle!), are not only ding-dongs; they stink, too! This reminds me of a marketing professor I had once discussing how feminine hygiene products found their way to stores. In response to one student's insistence that marketing execs simply "created" the market for the products, my professor replied, "Hey, WE didn't put that smell there!" Mike, you always bring fresh air and the "other side" to the smelly liberal crap we encounter every day in the media. Keep up the good work.

As you are well aware, "marriage" is not mentioned in the Constitution, but "equal protection" certainly is, as you can see from Section 1 of the XIVth: "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

Equal protection. You may marry the consenting adult you love. To be equal, gay people should be able to also.

Was your post, in which you queried why I would want to deny gay girls & boys the right to marry, directed at me? If so, reread my post to Will. If you want to be gay, fine get civil unionized. There is no Constitutional right to marriage nor is there a right to universal healthcare, as was alleged by BHO in the 2nd Presidential Debate.

Do yourself a favor and p/u a pocket-sized book containing the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Federalist Papers. Read'em and learn or weep. The choice is up to you.

BTW: I live in the very diverse French Quarter and about short 10 blocks from the very Center of Queerdom, The Bank, and we don't have protests over gay marriage.

This American citizen and French descendant attended Biz. School in London and lived in France, where my sister still lives.

As for the 14th Amendment, again it does not confer a right to marriage. There exists no right to marriage in the US Constitution. Marriage has always been a religious tradition. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is inapplicable to marriage, especially the happiness part.

Speaking Spanish certainly makes a lot sense in this country. Schools still teach French, German, Italian but it seems to me that has little practical value. I guess that is more for heritage purposes. Sounds you are an accomplished woman.

I've seen most of Sean Penn's movies althought I have no desire to watch MILK. He is a great actor, but a lousy political activist. How can anyone, who claims to champion civil rights, hang out with dictators in Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba? Good grief! In Iran, women and gays are killed for innumerable reasons. Venezuela does and Cuba has not only denied civil rights to their citizens, they have flat out killed them.

Rudolf: One more on language
It's embarrassing how many native-born English speakers are monolingual. (And, in some cases, not even that.) Understanding another language broadens the mind and increases one's understanding of a foreign culture.

I was mildly annoyed by the Japanese tendency to answer Yes to a question like "Isn't that the hotel?" until I learned that in Japanese, there are two verb forms, one for the positive (desu=is) and one for the negative (ja arimasen=is-not). Hence, Yes, it is not the hotel is entirely sensible. Argh! Trivial, but revealing. There are many such examples.

I am terribly envious of those who can speak many languages. One friend grew up with French and Italian, learned English (of course) and German (being Swiss), works now in Japan, in Japanese, and is learning the language of his wife, Yoruba, so their child is at least bilingual at home. He can read, write and understand related languages like Spanish and Italian and who knows what else.

Me, I can manage in English and some French. Plus, I can do food in a lot of languages :) Hassenpfeffer, anyone?

Just more dishonesty
My second post yesterday stated

" Quite frankly, I don't believe anything he says, and I certainly don't think is apology is sincere."

Obviously the reason I said this was because it was easy for me to see that Adams was dishonestly manipulating his readers.

My other posts stated that Adams should apologize to all the academics he has smeared. I stand by that. He should also apologize to the various minority groups (e.g., gays) he has smeared.

Here Adams is trying to smear liberals. Again, I do not believe much this man says, so I suspect he has cherry-picked or fabricated the quotes he lists (many of which I would agree with). Also, his logic is faulty: He seems to think he can draw some kind of equivalence between angry statements directed toward him, and the kind of hateful dishonest statements he (and other conservatives) directs towards entire groups of people.

And yes, Adams really is an embarrassment to academia. This has nothing to do with his columns, but arises from the fact that he is exploiting the tenure system by slacking off on legitimate scholarship, something he hypocritically accuses others of doing.

Most every tradition has a religious background or overtone for the simple reason religions have a tendency to co-opt traditions to reinforce their belief system, and we have only just begun to throw off this superstitious nonsense, starting with the Enlightenment--ideas that guided the Founders.

But marriage is today--for whatever reason--also a civil institution. And, as citizens, gay folk demand equal treatment by the State. See that pesky XIVth again.

Wow! I can't believe it. You said something nice to me. Merci beaucoup.

I agree with you on the need for Spanish in this coutry, although I learned it because my family has long had a beach house in Cabo San Lucas. Obviously, the French is something that I have spoken since I first said, "Maman", but I used it (and still do constantly) because of my travels and French-speaking amis. Russian was just something that I picked up overseas.

My children have been listening to French since I was pregnant with them and speaking it since they were both around 12 months old. They have been taking Spanish classes since they were 3 years old. My oldest, who is 10, is learning Mandarin Chinese.

Anyway, thanks for the nice words.

I was at a "garden party" in Sweden once. (It hailed on us. In June!) Our host had an eleven-year-old son who told a complex joke that depended on a pun. In English.
