Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend the 13th General Conference of the National Association of Scholars in Washington, D.C. Among the highlights of the conference was a debate between AAUP President Cary Nelson and NAS President Peter Wood. During the Q & A some of the comments by Nelson made me thankful that I am now a member of the NAS and that I have never been a member of the AAUP.

Cary Nelson claims the AAUP shares many of the same goals as the NAS including an atmosphere conducive to open debate on our college campuses. He also claims the AAUP is opposed to speech codes. When people question the AAUP’s opposition to speech codes they often cite their lack of response to many cases, which are instead taken up by the FIRE, a non-partisan civil liberties group based in Philadelphia.

Nelson responds to such criticisms, in part, by saying the AAUP is not as well-equipped as FIRE is to offer a quick response to such controversies. Nelson implies that the FIRE takes a lot of cases the AAUP would take were it not beaten to the punch. I disagree. I believe the AAUP is simply an unprincipled organization that ignores campus controversies because its victims are generally conservatives.

That conclusion is based on years of bad experiences with the AAUP’s members – beginning with my first major free speech controversy after 911. Some readers may remember that the controversy began when a student charged me with libel for simply implying that her mass email blaming 911 on America was “bigoted,” “unintelligent,” and “immature.”

When the university announced that it would be necessary to read my private emails in search of evidence for this bogus libel charge I turned to the FIRE for help. No member of the AAUP contacted me about the case until one year after the incident. Curiously, when the AAUP member did finally comment on the case he claimed falsely (in an email to the entire faculty) that the university did not read my private email correspondence as I had claimed. He specifically accused the FIRE of circulating a false press release.

After the university counsel corrected the completely misinformed AAUP member he was forced to apologize. I did not hear him comment on another free speech case for over a year. When he did, he completely mangled the facts of that case, too.

This second infraction was much worse because it involved the attack of an AAUP member on some students, rather than on another professor. The students were fighting to keep Democrats from joining their College Republican group with full voting rights as well as the right to run for office. They claimed the freedom of association clause of the First Amendment trumped the university’s non-discrimination clause. Eventually, the Republicans won the fight.

Of course, the AAUP member couldn’t resist the temptation to write about the controversy in the local paper. Unfortunately, he defamed the students claiming falsely that they were trying to keep blacks and Jews out of their organization. When the kids asked for an apology for the defamation the card-carrying AAUP member refused.

During the very same semester there was another free speech controversy that was enlightened by more AAUP brilliance (sarcasm: on). This one began when a history professor claimed she had friends who were terrorists in the Middle East. The statement was made in a public forum by a professor who was a public figure on the issue of terrorism. In response, a conservative student decided to publicize her claim in the student newspaper.

After the student simply reported what the public figure said, she threatened the student newspaper with a libel lawsuit. So the former president of the UNCW chapter of AAUP came to the rescue. But he came to the rescue of the professor, not the newspaper.

In a news interview the AAUP propagandist said the students were “totally confused” if they though the general theme of the professors remarks was “terrorism.” The students rightly pointed out that his remarks were – in typical AAUP fashion – completely irrelevant. They were complaining about a single sentence - “I have friends who are terrorists in the Middle East”- not the theme of the talk.

When our friend from the AAUP invited the students to engage in an email debate he said they should feel free to share it with friends. The two students – Michael Pomarico and Zeb Wright – simply excoriated the AAUP professor. The debate was so lopsided that he rescinded the offer to share the emails.

Unfortunately, the student newspaper yanked (from the online site) the original article reporting accurately that the professor who had terrorist friends in the Middle East said “I have terrorist friends in the Middle East.” She was allowed to offer a dishonest rebuttal, which would be the final word on the controversy. The newspaper capitulated to a bogus legal threat due in part to AAUP support of a dishonest professor with terrorist friends in the Middle East.

And, now, finally, nearly two years after I filed a federal lawsuit claiming violations of my First Amendment rights, I have read a communication about the case from the former Oregon State University AAUP President. Some will remember that he sent me a series of emails last week showing why he has the requisite mental stability to be a Professor Emeritus of Psychology. Among the epithets he hurled were “dishonest”, “hateful”, “stupid”, “idiotic”, “indecent”, “propagandist” and “bigot.”

In an internet posting that added the new epithets “failure,” phony,” and “homophobe” the former AAUP chapter president claimed falsely that I had filed a suit against UNC over “anti-Southern bigotry.” Furthermore, he botched literally every single fact in the post, which he subsequently pulled in an act of intellectual onanism.

The point here is not that every member of the AAUP is an unhinged bigot engaging in psychological projection. The point is that literally every time a member of the AAUP gets involved in a free speech case, the motivation is one of politics not principle. The debate always dwindles after the first AAUP “contribution.”

So, naturally, I hope that serious First Amendment defenders will continue to support the NAS. And I hope the AAUP will stick to issues they can handle such as faculty parking and separate bathrooms for trans-gendered professors.

Could this be Dr. Douglas?
Personally I think the good doctor needs some couch time.

He continues to post the most inane juvenile misinformation on Dr. Adams columns. However, they are a joy to read. After all, you simply cant buy amusement like Dr. Douglas,

Or Ranger29P as I like to call him. P for Psycho.

Dr. Psycho Douglas
My, Dr. Adams has your panties all tied up in a bunch, doesnt he? I bet you had to double the dose of your meds. just to post your response.

Dr. Adams does not intend to intimidate you. After all you are amusement with your non sensical rants.

No one hates you Dr. Douglas, on the contrary, I think PITY would be a far more appropriate description. In your case it is a shame to be so blessed intellectually and to have wasted your gift. That is a pity.

Deadwood is a universal description of psychology academics such as yourself.

The AAUP

Adams doesn’t even have enough sense to provide the title of the organization he is trying to smear. It’s the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

Adams criticisms are typically dishonest. The AAUP protects academic freedom for conservatives as well as liberals. In brief, the AAUP was founded around 1915 by John Dewey. Its basic goal is to protect “academic freedom” in both teaching and research, such that scholars can pursue a “free search for truth” without being pressured by political, economic, and social forces. If you want more information, look it up in wikipedia or go to the website (aaup.org).

This is just another typically dishonest smear job. Adams is so stuck in his own little world that he can’t come close to mounting a decent critique. Maybe he should stick to harassing gays and other minorities.

Dr. Douglas the Ernst Rohm of psychology
Your initial e-mail to Dr. Adams, you addressed him as Mr. Adams, knowing full well he was also a Phd, such as yourself. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Now you excoriate him for not using the word "associate" in front of professor.

That is speaking out both sides of your mouth Dr. Douglas. Or being an unabashed hypocrite.

Referring to posters here as storm troopers must be some sort of Freudian projection behavior on your part.

Perhaps you are the Ernst Rohm of psychology professors put out to the Phd emeritus pasture because they are, shall we say "deadwood".

Unprincipaled Progressives
is redundant.

Dr. Douglas
You should have written "Adams' criticisms..."

As the parent of a college student, I prefer a teacher who teaches more than he "publishes."
The aim seems to be to attain Full Professor status so the students can be passed off to a teaching assistant.

I thought AAUP was simply the NEA for high-priced faculty ... a vehicle for keeping them employed regardless of competence or lack thereof.

NEA refers to the National Education Association union.

Tom

You seem to have some misunderstandings regarding how academia functions.
First, the aim is not at all to get promoted to Full Professor so that teaching can be passed on to teaching assistants. Many universities, such as mine don't even have money for teaching assistants, so Full Professors teach just as much as any one else. This is a common misunderstanding. The main thing that reduces one's teaching load is if you obtain a grant to do extra research. Some of these grants include money to hire a teaching assistant (eg., those of the NIH) but others do not (those from the NSF). Nowadays, such grants have become harder and harder to get. In any event, being promoted to Full Professor carries no benefits, other than a slight salary increase.
Second, you claim about the AAUP being an NEA for high-priced faculty, kieeping them employed regardless of competence is wrong in two ways. On the one hand, faculty are not high-priced. On the contrary, they are horrendously underpaid. On the other hand, the NEA is actually a union, whereas the AAUP is not. I've already covered the AAUP's goals in previous post.
Third, all faculty are evaluated in terms of their teaching, research, and service. Universities differ in terms of the weight applied to teaching and research, but it is not fair to say that it's all based on research. People promoted to full professor tend to be excellent both in teaching as well as research (and at least good in service).

AAUP, Educational Perversion and Lies
I'd like it if the author would tell us readers our here what the AAUP is, so we could react. He did tell us by means of a link, what the NAS is. As holder of three degrees I know what this author is speaking of. I've witnessed first hand the vile, utterly dishonest hateful educational perversion practiced by the so-called liberals on campus. Liberals are completely fearful of being found out to be the outright liars and racists that they really are, so they deny, deny, deny. Not unlike the dishonorable feminist teacher who advised me in interviews, "Lie, Lie, Lie!" in hunting for work.

Unprincipled Colleges produce
Unprincipled colleges and universities produce unprincipled graduates.

Thus we have Enrons, Citibanks, AIGs, Microsoft's, General Electric, Madoffs, Tony Rescoes, Michael Milken, Mark Rich, Ted Stevens, Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.

In fact we see more of an "honor code" among La Street Gangs than we see in academia.

Mr. Douglass seems to have an unhealthy

obsession with Dr, Adams.

In fact, it appears that Douglass is "STALKING" Dr. Adams.... No sooner was Dr. Adam's column posted than Douglass was posting.

Mind you, not about the column so much, but rather "about Dr. Adams," and it appears that Douglass' posts, for the most part, had been prepared ahead of time.

Douglass seems to have all the earmarks of a budding "cyber-stalker."

Dr. Douglas
I don't have a Ph.D., but I consider myself educated. I have a BS in biochemistry (GPA 3.5), a BS in physics (4.0) and an MS in mathematics (3.8). In these disciplines, everything is objective, and a thorough grounding in logic is required. Political ideology aside, I find Adams's arguments far more logical than yours. Not surprising, since psychology is so subjective. In fact, there are many who don't even consider psychology to be a real science. I know of nobody who says that about physics.

Will
How do you know that the people writing these comments are fat?

Doug
You are right on. Do you see an air of elitism in Dr. Douglas's rants? I've always said that psychology has been one of the main reasons for the decline in the American society. Have you ever wondered how the greatest generation survived without them? Since the inception of a bunch of people who could'nt even make it to Psychiatrist level because you have to actually be smarter to prescribe meds. I remember when I took psychology in college it was the easiest course in my curriculum. And even then I realized it was purely a subjective study.

ADLoggy
Physics has given us electricity, machinery, air travel, computers, and all sorts of other things that make life for average citizens more interesting and enjoyable than the lives of royalty throughout most of history. Biochemistry has given us treatments and cures for many awful diseases, as well as longer, healthier lives. Psychology has given us a couple of generations of whiners who are convinced that they have this or that mental malady, and therefore the rest of us have to go out of our way to give them special privileges.

Doug
Yea, and lets not forget about that self esteem crap that has produced a couple of generations of "Jay Walkers" who graduated high school with the intelligence of 8th graders (maybe). But at least they feel good about achieving mediocracy at best.

COL Mitchell
In ehe words of Dr. Douglas that was a "mean-spirited" thing to post. You might hurt these people's feelings by telling the truth and intimating facts. Why they may even get a few emails from angry people who demand responsibility and accountability for their decisions. Psychologists have probably created a phobic term for that. The nerve using reason and logic instead of feelings to guide your thought processes. The Shame.

MAJ Floyd

Will in CA
Just change the word conservative to liberal in your post and you will be dead on.

What a cruel Joke this article is
This President and Congress are not the 'saviors' of our country. It is far left Liberals who have secured the country and will drive it to our destruction. Pervasive liberal Education that drive culture and class wars, over taxation driving business and investment out, lack of morality allowing abortions full term as a cruel death of the defenseless, no business leaders on his staff ie..addition of 600K government employee's vs value added business jobs, support of unionization and non competitiveness, and on and on. So this 'bring the people together" crap is really in left field for the sake of all we hold dear by our constitutional framers. Stop the nonsense and call a spade a spade. America is duped.

Dr. Adams
Not all of us are in the education field. Would it be asking too much for you to spell out the names of the organizations just once before using the acronyms like alphabet soup?

TIA ;-)

Obama is an usurper
Obama is an usurper, a pretender to the Presidency. His candidacy was illegitimate, his election illegal and his Presidency will be a fraud and a hoax on the American people and our Constitution.

Presidents must be at least 35 years of age, resident for at least 14 years and a natural born citizen. Obama meets the age and residency requirements but is he a natural born citizen under the Constitution?

A natural born citizen is a person born in America to American parents (plural). Obama claims to be Hawaiian, but absent an official birth certificate, we cannot know for sure. His mother appears to have been an American citizen. However, Obama has written that his father was a Kenyan subject to the British Crown but never an American.

This “Constitutional scholar” should know he cannot take the oath of office without perjuring himself. So anxious were they to stick the first-black-president feather in their party’s cap that the Democrats failed to be Americans and put our Constitution first by thoroughly vetting their candidate.

Well, they have gotten their wish but at the price of creating a Constitutional crises that, if unresolved, will indeed render the Great Parchment nothing more than, in the words of Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, “just a goddamn piece of paper.”

Hawkeye58
Not to be overly critical or judgmental but did you try googling the acronyms in question?

For instance, the very first entry for AAUP is, "American Association of University Professors". I dare say this is probably the organization of which Dr Adams speaks...

Dr. Doug's privacy concerns
Dear Dr. Doug,
Mike Adams, since he is a criminology professor, could explain this to you if you would only "share" knowledge with your fellow academic. When you send someone an email, you have exposed it to public view. The Fourth Amendment does not protect that which we choose to make public. When you emailed him at school, his email and yours became property of the university AND a public record. So, he doesn't need your permission to publish your emails, and you should think hard before you send him anymore emails wherein you make a perfect a*s of yourself. If townhall has indeed told him to stop it, I am disappointed and will address that with townhall. I urge the other posters here to do the same. When Mike publishes an article about academic idiocy and gives the contact info, I contact them. They need to hear from the public as a reality check.

I emailed Townhall
If it true that you told Dr. Adams to stop writing articles about emails from people like Dr. Doug? Dr. Doug claims he complained to townhall and that townhall told Dr. Adams "not to do it again". If so, this is a violation of Mike Adams' First Amendment right to free speech. That would an anomaly for a conservative website, although it is par for the course when a liberal gets offended. I await the answer to my question and will post it for everyone to read.

Dr Douglas has a 'Man Crush'?

Dr Douglas has a 'Man Crush' on Dr Adams?

It seems like every moment and every thought Dr Douglas has is focused on Dr Adams.

Maybe Will could help Dr Douglas 'out'.

Dr. Douglas is a liar
I found publications for 2000, 2003, 2004 in my research on Dr. Adams. You say no publications for Dr. Adams between 1998 and 2006? You are a liar.

Or maybe in your research on Adams you prove yourself to be in incompetent researcher?

Go to bed Dr. Douglas.

farshooter
"Not to be overly critical or judgmental but did you try googling the acronyms in question?"

If I have to Google to decipher someone's column, I will no longer be a reader.

Shine the Light!
Keep on shining that light into the dark places of academia, Dr. Adams.

You know the good effect you're having by the way the lurkers in the shadows scream when their actions are revealed to the cleansing sunlight.

Mother of 4,
well said and beautifully written. Almost poetry.

And Tom...if the SCOTUS ever gets around to checking on BHO's birth status, I predict that the intended and planned "Constitutional crisis" that ensues will be the Left's golden opportunity to change the very Constitution we hold dear, and we will lose our right to bear arms, among other things.

Dr. Douglas has overtaken ...
will as Dr. Adams resident stogger. Stogge was a term coined specifically for will. It is the compound form of "stalking blogger".

I am not as willing as Retired Geek to give Dr. Douglas the benefit of the doubt by referring to his attraction to Dr. Adams as a "Man Crush".

I think there is some psycho-sexual attraction, just as there is for will, but ultimately, I think they mean to inflict harm. A form of pyscho-pseudo-masochism, if you will.

You really nailed the AAUP (aka a Marxist front group) where it really hurts -- right in its collective hypocrisy! Keep up the brilliant work!

The AAUP

"Adams criticisms are typically dishonest. The AAUP protects academic freedom for conservatives as well as liberals. In brief, the AAUP was founded around 1915 by John Dewey. Wiki is not considered a valid source Douglas. Also, you failed to refute one of Adam's claims. Not one. You simply used ad hominem, and moved the claim to the history of the AAUP, which is irrelevant.

It is common practice to silence conservatives on most U.S. institutions of "higher learning." I know, I worked in one, and often witnessed the suppression of opposing views on these campuses. As a student, some professors would attempt to humiliate me regarding communism, capitalism, etc. They usually failed.

"This is just another typically dishonest smear job. Adams is so stuck in his own little world that he can’t come close to mounting a decent critique. Maybe he should stick to harassing gays and other minorities."

Okay, why is this a smear job? Try to refute the claims.

Secular Humanist Scum?
Incompetent or evil? Or is an ideology based in tranny and chaos, but at the same time deluding its followers into believing a feel-good and righteous cause, capable of producing in the mind both evil and incompetence?

Are these AAUP people the same people that belong to groups like PETA and the Sierra Club and the ACLU? Maybe they are the very same people and are making all of the mischief all over the country.

Truth is whatever!

John
America has been duped.
Because America has become a bunch of dupies.

'nuff said
"In brief, the AAUP was founded around 1915 by John Dewey." Dr. Douglas

AAUP = Advocacy
"The AAUP bills itself as the guardian of academic freedom at colleges and universities, but the organization often allies itself with unsavory academics. The organization strongly supported Ward Churchill, the University of Colorado professor who described victims of the World Trade Center terrorist attacks as 'little Eichmanns.' The AAUP came to the defense of Susan Rosenberg when John Jay College of Criminal Justice declined to renew her contract. Rosenberg, an adjunct professor at John Jay, had served 16 years in prison for an armed robbery committed while she was a member of the Weather Underground. Her 58-year sentence was commutted [sic] when President Bill Clinton pardoned her in his last days in office. The AAUP has also defended academic terror suspects Tariq Ramadan, Sami al-Arian, and Mohammed Yousry."

Intellectual Onanism
Is it possible to act as an intellectual Onan when one is intellectually impotent? Unless, of course, if big pharma has invented and distributed intellectual viagra. (But I don't think this has occurred since Billy Mays isn't hawking it.)

If these Secular Humanist Socialist Scum
are capable as coeds of infiltrating the Republican Club why wouldn't it be an easy task for so-called grownups to infiltrate the once Conservative Republican Party? How are we as citizens to know if the people we are voting for are truly balanced and Conservative. Where is Truth and Honor?

No Freedom just Persecution
That's what socialists and communists do: repress free speech, accurate facts, opposing views, and force indoctrinated educational ideology - no free thought or access to alternative views either. And especially, get rid of religion. Truth is what THEY say it is. Go against it and you'll be persecuted.

Is Dr. Douglas real?
I have the suspicion that Dr. Douglas isn't real. I think he's a buddy of Mike's, set up to give Mike an easy target. Either that, or he's a total fabrication of Mike's.

Chuck
John Dewey's name always pops up in the midst of what has gone wrong in this country. How could this one man have caused so much harm? I do believe his signature appears on the Humanist Manifesto I. Have you read it?

A Nugget of Psychology from an Emeritus
Here is a quote:

"Thus, skilled control of voluntary attention may allow anxious persons to limit the impact of threatening information."

From:

Anxiety- related attentional biases and their regulation by attentional control.

And who do you think wrote this? A very anxious emeritus of psychology? So anxious that he cant follow his own published psychology?

Anxiety related. Dr Adams has definitely pegged the anxiety meter of a certain emeritus PhD.

Deeds not Words
When someone points to the "basic goals" of an organization and not its deeds, you know he is on thin ice. Also,to those who are not in the education establishment, just refer to a dictionary. AAUP is defined there!

Gestell, if you've followed the
Dr. D saga even just a little, you'd know that he is a real person. In fact if you read some of Dr. Adams columns from the past week or two, you can get Dr. D's full name and email address.

The middle sentence of your three sentence post is what has us all laughing. You see, Dr. D. is real, he is a former president of his local chapter of the AAUP, and by your own observation, a liberal ignoramus. It obviously doesn't take much mental prowess to achieve the academic altitudes Dr. D has reached. That's our institutions of higher learning for you!

University Liberals
Good article, Mike. It would be funny if it weren't the truth. But what can you expect from liberals that take themselves so seriously that they they define all criticism of themselves as "hate speach".

Too poor for TAs?
Dr. Douglas types, "Many universities, such as mine don't even have money for teaching assistants"

If you are indeed the Douglas Derryberry referenced in "Mr. Adams Responds," "your" university is Oregon State U. The listing for you in Oregon State's directory leads me to believe you are indeed he:

http://directory.oregonstate.edu/?type=showfull&osuuid=4023 5728652

That being the case, I must point out that "your" university not only has teaching assistants, but engages in collective bargaining:

http://oregonstate.edu/dept/grad_school/faculty/gasalarysup p.html

And, before you engage in the Clintonian tactic of "Those are GRADUATE assistants, not TEACHING assistants," I must also point out that "your" university also offers the Herbert F. Frolander Award "to recognize outstanding teaching and professional involvement with both faculty and students by a graduate teaching assistant at Oregon State University."

http://oregonstate.edu/dept/grad_school/current/frolander.h tml

In other words, there remain two possibilities:
1) you are completely ignorant of the operation of your own school
or
2) you're a bald-faced liar.

In either case, everything else you type is, shall we say, called into question.

Doc Liberty

What I said was true: Many universities and colleges are too poor for teaching assistants.

In reference to my own university, I should have said my college within the university, which was the College of Liberal Arts.

So I guess I'm neither ignorant or a bald-faced liar, as you claim

Is he for real?
Is Col. Billy Mitchell serious, or are his posts parody? Its looks like an example of Poe's Law to me.

Mike is always accurate and informative

Keep up the good work !!!

Dr. Douglas
You wrote: "On the one hand, faculty are not high-priced. On the contrary, they are horrendously underpaid."

Increases in college tuition have continued to far outpace inflation.

The single largest expense of a university is the cost of personnel.

At Oregon State University, for the 2006-2007 school year, adjusted to a nine-month scale, a professor earned $84,800. A beginning instructor, adjusted to a nine-month scale, earned $40,000.

Maybe the leader of the Oregon State University AAUP did not do a very good job in working for the faculty.

Can you earn more? Of course! Work for a more prestigious university. Do you deserve more?

Adam's attack on the AAUP

Adam's launches his usual creepy attack upon some aspect of academia, in this case the AAUP. I've already directed you to the appropriate background information (wikipedia) and the aaup.org website. I've also laid out the basic underlying principle of the AAUP: " to protect academic freedom (the free search for truth) in research and teaching from external political, social, and economic pressures". That's what Adams refers to as unprincipled.

Adams whine because the AAUP didn't come to his defense. As I've already stated, it's not because he is conservative; we've defended many conservatives. Another possibility is that the AAUP is primarily concerned with violations of academic freedom, and one could argue that Adams' academic freedom was not being violated. However, my best guess would be that the local AAUP chapter realized that Adams attempted to harass and intimidate the woman in question by forwarding her email to his conservative buddies so that they would attack her (sound familiar?). Such an attempt to intimidate her would be viewed as interfering with her academic freedom. So, from what I know, the AAUP probably saw Adams actions as a violation of academic freedom, and thus did not want to defend him.

So that no one gets confused:
Why not, rather than attacking me, psychology, and the AAUP, deal with the ACTUAL CONTENT of my initial posts:

Adams specifically attacked me in his article. I responded by pointing out that he is a failed academic, who rather than doing his job in the area of research has opted out to publish conservative propaganda. I also pointed out his hypocrisy in dishonestly accusing others (academics (communists)) of doing the same thing he appears to be doing (stopping research once tenured) (see posts 2-3). Adams can easily refute me by demonstrating that he has continued to do publishable research post-tenure. But instead he tries to smear the AAUP.

I also pointed out that Adams’ problem with Ms. Fuller arose because “He also forwarded her message to people who shared his political beliefs. Ms. Fuller then started receiving abusive e-mail messages.” (according to the Chronicles of Higher Education). This was the same unethical and unprofessional tactic he used against me. (posts 4+5)

Jack

Rather than calling me a liar,

let's see your list.

And even if there were one that I missed, it would not change my conclusion: Adams slacked off after he got tenure.

Mr. Douglass asks: "deal with the ACTUAL
CONTENT of my initial posts?"

Because it's nonsense... Pretty much like the nonsense you posted about global warming.

BTW, did you do the non-biased research I suggested? I even provided a link for you? :-)

Husker 2

It's nice that you actually tried to do research, but the numbers you provide are misleading. Universities publish these sorts of inflated numbers to make themselves look better than they actually are.

The reason they are inflated is that they often include administrators who actually are well paid. Also, what you find is a range across the departments, with more lucrative fields (computer science, and business) having higher salaries than less lucrative departments (psycholoogy, math, philosophy). The more lucrative fields also have more members, which tends to further inflate the average.

The AAUP at Oregon State was not a union, so we were not at all interested in salary issues.

Doug

Rather than deal with my ponts, you attack psychology. What a ridiculous anti-intellectual approach!

I'm not about to waste much time with someone like you, but put it this way: Psychology is central within most of the major interdisciplinary sciences that are active today: neuroscience (physiological psychology), cognitive science (cognitive psychology), developmental science (developmental psych), social science (social psychology), and the psychiatric sciences (clinical psychology).

I hope this isn't too subjective for you.

Is Higher Learning an Oxymoron?
After reading Mike's post and Dr. Douglas' responses, I'm beginning to wonder if the term, "Institutions of Higher Learning" isn't somewhat oxymoronic.

even if I missed one?
Douglas, you did not miss one you missed several. And you did it on purpose to smear Adams.

You are not THAT stupid. You are dishonest.

Let you see my list? You're kidding right? I asked for the refereed empirical evidence that tenure increases productivity and you STILL have not provided it.

You are a lunatic Derryberry. You will be known more for making a fool of yourself with Adams help than for anything you ever published in a journal.

This is largely because more people read "Mr. Adams Responds" than anything you've ever written.

You were beaten up on the playgrouns WAY too much in grammar school.

That is my psychological evaluation.

Dr. D: Option 1 or 2?
Dr. D's original statement: "Many universities, such as mine don't even have money for teaching assistants"

I spent 5 minutes on Oregon State's website and learned that this is false. Dr. D honored me with a response:

"What I said was true: Many universities and colleges are too poor for teaching assistants."

The second clause is so broad as to be unanswerable; more important, it is not what you originally wrote, and what you originally wrote was not true.

"In reference to my own university, I should have said my college within the university, which was the College of Liberal Arts."

That may indeed be the case. If, however, your College cannot afford graduate assistantships for any of its seven graduate programs, the University does not say so in its informative site:

http://oregonstate.edu/dept/grad_school/current/assistantsh ips.html

Regardless, in reply to another poster, you asked for commentators to address the actual content of your posts. That's what I did. Please forgive me for not replying to what you allegedly MEANT to write.

"So I guess I'm neither ignorant or a bald-faced liar, as you claim"

Actually, Option 2 is still a possibility. Option 1 has merely been expanded:

1a) You are ignorant of the operation of your own university.
1b) You are ignorant of the meaning of the words "SUCH AS MINE".
1c) You are ignorant of the complexities of web posting, to the point that you cannot construct an articulate post.

The fact remains: everything else that you post is still, deservedly, in question.

"Free search for truth?
Yeah that sounds just like the clap-trap you would expect from an acedemic. Just what are these great 'truths' the acedemics fear not being free to uncover without the likes of AAUP?

And you demand to be free of political, social and economic pressures? Why? What makes you different from everyone else? Politicians must be dealt with in order to get public funds, politics is always at play. Show society your research is meaningful and they will back it, if you can't expect social pressure to change your ways. As for economics, if the money isn't there it's just not there, deal with it or do the research on your own dime if you're that commited to it.

The pompus drivel of "Our quest for the truth" is truely sickening.

Dr. Douglas
Colleges are too poor or are they simply bad at spending other people's money? Some of these construction projects going on at colleges can be money sinkholes. That's just one area...multiply that by everything else they do.

Except of course we know staffing is top notch with zero wasted dollars there, right?

For a look at how an excellent college should be run, check out Hillsdale.

Jack

I believe I asked you to post the academic publications that I supposedly missed.

You failed to do this.

This is not complicated: Even if you came up with 3 or 4 publications post-tenure publications for Adams, it would not change my conclusion. All you have to do is to take the average number of publications per year pre-tenure (1993-1998, I believe) and compare it to the average publications per year post tenure (1999-2009. As any moron can seen, there is going to be a sharp decrease post-tenure, which suggests very strongly that Adams has slacked off.

Or put it this way, you claim you found a publication from 2004. Well that's still 4 years ago. No respectable academic would go this long without a publication, at least none that I've ever known.

So let's see your list. I'll be more than happy to incloude the "missing pubs" to my list.

Western Bondbeam
Hillsdale may be well run and I will check it out.

However, the rest of your comments miss what's actually happening. The reason so many universities and colleges are going under is primarily the result of reduced state funding. In my university, for example, 20 years ago the state provided 40% of the universities funding while no it only provides 20%.

This may not seem like a huge decrease, but given the limited federal funds and alumni donations, it has made a huge difference. As a result, faculty are paid less, adjunct instructors rather than tenure-track faculty are hired, class sizes get bigger, and of course the students suffer (not to mention the fact that they are forced to pay higher tuition).

What is the cause of this decline in state funding and education? It's primarily due to the fact that republican hacks have promoted an anti-tax agenda (since 1978) which has undermined state funds. People will not pay the taxes needed to provide decent education for their kids. Many very good educational systems have been ruined while corporations have gotten richer. And of course the students suffer.

AAUP
Those who needed to Google AAUP to figure grasp the acronym are clearly lacking some common sense. If Dr. Adams is at the National Association of Scholars convention watching debate between proponents of NAS and something called the AAUP, it is no great intellectual feat to figure the AA equalps American Association, and U might possibly stand for University. That leaves the P, which is so obvious its ridiculous.

Also, any college instructor, ( from TA to Ph.D.) that recommends WIKIPEDIA as an authoritative source deserves to be stripped of his credentials and given a low level civil service job in a small rural community, where he might glean true education from life in the real world. I think I'll bop over to wiki this evening for some editorial laughs, changing some of the entries.

Doc Liberty

You claim you've addressed the content of my posts but in reality you've focused on a trivial little point I made in response to another. As I already admitted, "I should have said "college" rather than unveristy". It was a mistake, and a trivial one. Understand?

Now, address my major points from post 2-5.

First, Adams specifically attacked me in his article.

Second, I also pointed out that Adams’ problem with Ms. Fuller arose because “He also forwarded her message to people who shared his political beliefs. Ms. Fuller then started receiving abusive e-mail messages.” (according to the Chronicles of Higher Education). This was the same unethical and unprofessional tactic he used against me. (posts 4+5)

Prove me wrong.

Towhhall removes my posts

From what I can tell, Townhall has removed my intial posts 2,3,4, and 5.

Let's here it for free speech!

I have been called stupid, a liar, having a man-crush, impotent, and all of your other little slurs, and yet that level of discourse is just fine for the townhall "editors"..

My posts exposed Adams and tried of hold him accountable in several ways. They must have been extremely threatening to Adams and thus they had to be removed. The posts involved factual information, numerical evidence, and direct quotes from the Chronicle of Higher Education. Not one person was able to address my evidence, and to my recollection only one person even tried.

What a joke! I've seen bigotry, sexism, racisim, and just about every form of hatred on Townhall.com, but when one of your propagandists is exposed as a quack, then the "editors" step in.

What hypocrisy!!!!

Reposted censored post 1

Last week I pointed out that although the author (Adams) claims he is a “professor”, he is actually only an “associate professor”. Most honest faculty members would not claim to be a “professor”, at least not in formal, public situations, unless they had been promoted from associate professor to “full professor”. Adams tried to get promoted from “associate” to “full professor” (i.e., professor) in 2006, but was denied promotion due to his inadequate research. I mentioned that it was extremely rare for an associate professor to attempt to get promoted with only 10 publications. Most professors have far more publications than ten, and many have attained various grants to support their research. Finally, I noted that Adams has issued a formal complaint, claiming that he was denied promotion because of his christianity and conservatism.

I had to search hard to find the references to Adams’ articles, because his record of scholarship is obscure and weak.. Here are the dates of the publications that I could find: 1990, 1993, 1995, 1995, 1996, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2003. As can be seen, Adams had a reasonable publication record up until 1998, which just happens to the point at which he was awarded tenure. But remarkably, Adams has only ONE publication between after he got tenure between 1998 and 2006! I can’t imagine an academic department that would promote someone who essentially stopped publishing after attaining tenure. At my university, the post-tenure review process would probably have placed Adams on probation for such a record. Such people are usually referred to as “deadwood”.

Reposted censored post 2
Several weeks ago Adams smeared academic “leftists” with the ridiculous charge that “communists are attracted to academia because of the tenure system”, insinuating that they take advantage of the tenure promotion (to associate professor) and slack off for the rest of their careers. I might be wrong, but the evidence laid out above clearly suggests that this is exactly what Adams has done!!!!! He put in the effort up until the time he got tenure, and then slacked off more or less completely. I hope you can appreciate the remarkable hypocrisy involved in dishonestly smearing others for doing something that one is doing oneself.

Rather than doing legitimate academic scholarship, Adams seems to have opted for writing the dishonest and hateful propaganda as evident on Townhall. Adams seems to spend most of his time criticizing other academics, especially minority groups such as gays, but he is the one who is not carrying out his academic duties for real scholarship. North Carolina tax payers should not be paying for his propaganda. Faculty are given credit for community service, but in Adams case it appears to be community disservice.

While Adams aims to smear faculty, let me make it clear that instances of deadwood are relatively rare. The vast majority of faculty are extremely hard-working and highly motivated. They tend to love their fields (most of which are of course fascinating). This love of knowledge, along with a sense of wonder in searching for the truth, causes them to work hard throughout their careers (unlike Adams). Personally, I can think of no finer career than to be an academic researcher and teacher.

Reposted censored post 3
As some of you will recall, Adams wrote a dishonest and hateful aricle making absurd claims such as “communists are attracted to academia because of the tenure system”. As a professor myself, I was appalled by his derogatory statements and wrote a private email to him to complain. Adams proceeded to publish (without my permission) my letter to him along with a dishonest rebuttal. More important, he doctored my letter to include by private e-mail address. Adams obviously did this on purpose, with the goal of inflaming his “stormtroopers” to attack me through my private email. As a result, I received many mean-spirited and in some cases threatening emails. One person even tried to damage my academic reputation by sending a nasty email to many of my faculty colleagues (via a listserve).

Adams was clearly trying to punish me for disagreeing with him, and also to intimidate me so I wouldn’t bother him again. Although my wife and I were very distressed by the nasty emails, we are not likely to be intimidated by someone like Adams. As I’ve pointed out before, Adams’ violation of my privacy with the intent to punish and intimidate me was highly unethical. The Editor-in-Chief for Townhall.com was not accountable; all he did was to ask Adams not to do it again.

Since that bizarre experience, I’ve discovered that such efforts to intimidate are not a new strategy for Adams. Back in 2001, he actually used this technique on one of his students. Here is part of the report from the “Chronicles of Higher Education”, the top-level news publication for higher education.

reposted censored post 4
“The professor's saga began last September, when he received an e-mail message from Rosa T. Fuller, who was a senior at the university and a former student of Mr. Adams. The message, which she sent to many people within a few days of September 11, suggested that the "imperialist" policies of the United States in the Middle East had precipitated the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Mr. Adams, who is a longtime conservative, replied with a searing e-mail message that labeled her remarks "bigoted, unintelligent, and immature." He also forwarded her message to people who shared his political beliefs. Ms. Fuller then started receiving abusive e-mail messages. One student said she should be beaten with a baseball bat.

Stung by the vitriol, Ms. Fuller accused Mr. Adams of defaming and intimidating her. She cited North Carolina's open-records law to request that college administrators allow her to read e-mail messages that he had sent from the university's computer system from September 15.”

As you can see, Adams has a history of using the same unethical technique on a student as he used on me. When he targets an enemy, he manipulates others to attack them.

This is basically what he is trying to do with his articles --- to manipulate others (you) into hating others.

Dr. Douglas
I apologize for this post. I had already resolved not to get into this discussion again.

However, your 6:16 p.m. post has a statement that I can't let pass: "It's primarily due to the fact that republican hacks have promoted an anti-tax agenda (since 1978) which has undermined state funds."

That's it! It can't be the University's fault! It can't be the bloated administrative budgets. It can't be instructors paid full-time salaries for 13 hours of work per week (including office hours).

It's those evil Republicans and their tax policies.

That's it! You don't pay enough taxes! If we could just raise taxes, then the state would have the money to pay us the salaries we deserve!

They must not have Lithium in Oregon. IF they did, Dr. Dingleberry would be getting it intravenously.

Re: Dr Doug's censored post 4
Dr. Douglas, can you offer any citations to back up the accusations you make, whether they be the ones you make about Dr. Adams, or whether they be the details you related about the girl receiving "abusive" emails? It would help us here believe you, if you could do so.

the Baron

Like I said, the part about Rosa Fuller being subjected to threatening emails was quoted directly from the Chronicle of Higher Education:

As for the list of his publications, I would have to send you the address for the "Social Services Abstracts and Sociological Abstracts", but you wouldn't be able to acess that site without a university site licence.

I can of course publish the list, but why bother when Townhall will attempt to censor it.

LOL....Dr. Adams.........

"And I hope the AAUP will stick to issues they can handle such as faculty parking and separate bathrooms for trans-gendered professors."

I always enjoy great sarcasm..........

On a more serious note......thanks for your efforts on many issues concerning our college campuses.....I believe this is the real battleground of clashing ideologies for the future of this country......keep up the good fight!

I think it's rather humorous for a real live PHD of anything to whine about a private site practicing censorship on HIM! I learned a long time ago that my dime paying for your voice certainly ain't free speech.

I'm not laughing with you, I'm laughing at you.

Science of Criminology
I am just reading the responses to Dr. Adams' column. Dr. Adams teaches criminology at UNCW. Certainly such a subject/discipline would require a good to excellent background in the science of psychology............any comments?

Dr. Douglas Idiot
It would not be four years. You identified a 2006 publication yourself. It hasn't been four years since 2006, you idiot.

Host of new screen names
I have noticed a host of new screen names that are defending Dr. Adams, why?

dr. Douglas.
I agree with you sentiments on Adam's columns. Let us face it, the TH readers do not accept mainstream science - evolution, global warming, homosexuality - so what is there to discuss with them? I hope that under Obama at least the goverment will return to more rational thinking. Adams may teach a lot of classes, as professors at smaller colleges often do, that may explain his lack of publications?

Hey? Can I do anything else for you?

Dr. Douglas
Yes, neuroscience is for real. I had an introductory course in neurophysiology as part of my biochem curriculum. Of course, I first had to take a few prerequisites: general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and general physiology. Were all those part of your psychology curriculum as well?

Rudolf
Are physics and biochemistry not mainstream sciences? And since when is homosexuality a science?

Doug in Fl
"I find Adams's arguments far more logical than yours. Not surprising, since psychology is so subjective. In fact, there are many who don't even consider psychology to be a real science. I know of nobody who says that about physics."

Well said. I don't find 'dr. douglass' very persuasive myself. It shouldn't be surprising since these university drs. usually have a captive audience that they control with the power of the grade.

Because of 'dr. douglas' types, in some disciplines Amercian universities convey little more than propaganda and lies.

The better students quickly learn to feed the 'dr. douglass' the tripe they want in order to advance academically, but, in fact, explore the truth on their own.

As a matter of fact, much of academia is agenda driven lying: students lie for grades and graduate appointments; administrators lie for power and funding; 'dr. douglass's lie for tenure, prestige and social status, etc. on and on.

Mike Adams is something special in this turgid academic milieu: a lone voice calling into question the corrupt, leftist howlers who direct the mentally diseased cacophony that passes for academic discourse.

grubby
You can't lie for grades in physics. And even if your political views differ from those of a physics professor, you will still get an A if your answers are correct. Physics professors will not deny the truths that experiments reveal.

John Dewey . . .
John Dewey . . .John Dewey . . .
Hmmmm. Yes, wasn't he the rather weird fellow who was seen emitting great, soul wrenching sobs while draped over the coffin of Trotsky after poor John had raced down there upon hearing that an assassin had buried the hatchet in poor Trotsky's head?
Yup, that's the guy. Maybe that's why so many of my teachers and professors said, later, that Dewey's ideas about Progressive Education were so much excrement of the male bovine.
I guess the same might apply to the AAUP as well, don'cha think?

Jack

Try going back and READING what I wrote.

1990, 1993, 1995, 1995, 1996, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2003

Where is this mysterious 2006 publication?

Where are the two publications you claim to have found. I've asked for them twice bugt you haven't delivered.

Oh, just call me an idiot, or a liar, instead

Tom - wrong about NEA
"NEA refers to the National Education Association union."

It stands for No Education Available.

Doug

I'm not impressed with you education or your arguments. You know very little about the structure of science, and I don't think you have a clue about how science actually works.

I've spent nearly 30 years studying neuroanatomy, neurobiology, neurochemistry, and so on. So don't feed me your crap about psychology being "subjective".

Dr Doug's media fantasy
I'll not call you names but you have to be more than a tad delusional to believe that the media is dominated by right wingers. Evry time you turn around another democrat staffer is leaving their post to become a right wing "journalist"
IE:

Tim Russert
Chris Mathews
Georgie Step on all of us
Linda Douglass

Maybe you can point to the rabid righties, Doc?

Rudolf

Looking at his course list, Adams doesn't appear to teach many courses. In addition, it's a huge department for such a small major. As I see it, Adams lack of academic publications is due to the fact that he's not doing his job; instead, he publishes this conservative propaganda.

I agree with you that the TH readers are basically anti-intellectual and can't be be carry out an intelligent discussion. Still, I thought they might be able to understand a simple sequence of numbers (1990, 1993, 1995.....2003), but I guess not.

Well, Mr. Adams became Adams, but Mr.
Douglas still uses HIS title. Hmmm. And he wants to be respected?

And this silliness about who is a professor? Aren't all generals addressed as "General", no matter how many stars? How unbecoming for Douglass to get spittle on his gown over this!

Selected ratings:

This dude will bore you to tears then grade hard on tests and papers. He is very monotone, but sounds like a cross between a goat and Tommy Chong

good researcher, smart man.... less in the personality department... but better then his wife Dr. Reed.

Oh god, kill me now. Classes so boring you'll be wanting to bite your own arm off for entertainment. The tests are only loosely based on lectures, but more-lecture based than book-based, so do your best to make sense of his boring ramblings.

well, hes really smart. lectures are boring, but he does know what hes talking about.

I don't understand how a class about personality can be taught by someone with no personality whatsoever.

some factoids:

As an associate professor I was referred to by the college dean and the department chair as professor, both to myself and to students. This is common. Here, Dr. D is mistaken.

As Dr. D admits, faculty are evaluated on teaching service and research. Yet he criticizes Dr. Adams publication record, without examining the other two factors on which faculty are evaluated. Additionally, he cannot know the publications Dr. Adams has in press or submitted.

The AAUP is a union at many schools and have been known to strike and picket. I have observed that the top tier institutions do not have strong AAUP membership. Anecdotal, but I would place a bet on it.

A final observation on publications. The most prestigous journals have the highest page charges and the most rigorous refereeing. One submits, edits and sometimes argues with a referee. Then, when the article is accepted, page charges which can amount to several hundred dollars need be provided. (keep in mind that reader's digest actually pays you for humor in every day life) Sounds like a bit of a racket, eh? Some people have worried that the amount of knowledge is growing too fast, since the footage of journal thickness has been increasing faster than the speed of light. But causality has not been violated, since there is no real information being transmitted! (Doug, you should get this).

Rudolf

The other thing that suggests Adams' lack of publications is the trend in his publication dates:

1990, 1993, 1995, 1995, 1996, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2003

I goes up until he gets tenure (around 98) and then plummets. There's no way a high teaching load could explain this trend, unless his load quadrupled after he got tenured.

His research skills either collapsed around 1998 or he intentionally decided he was going to slack off and stop doing research and switch to writing conservative propaganda.

Please offer other explanations if you have any.

Let's Just Abolish Tenure
Obviously Dr. Douglas thinks tenure is a rotten idea. Let's get rid of it, I'm sure most of the folks that frequent Townhall wouldn't stand in the way.

Douglas is tired or else just a poor
poor writer.

"Looking at his course list, [sic] Adams doesn't appear to teach many courses."

Get out your Strunk & White to see what's wrong with that construction. So, Adams is looking at his course list? Also, if he doesn't appear to teach many courses, does he appear to teach a lot of courses, or does he appear only to teach the courses he is scheduled to teach? Perhaps he is so good that he can teach the courses without appearing at all!

"I agree with you that the TH readers are basically anti-intellectual and can't be be [sic] carry out an intelligent discussion."

I can am am carry out one! Treye me me.

I found two books by Adams, but none by Derryberry. Hmmm.

soliton
You first point is trivial - my point was that "honest" professors refer to their precise title in FORMAL situations such as writing.

It completely misses the point that to say that I cannot know what Adams has submitted. My point (if you read it) was that he came up and was denied promotion in 2006, with only one publication (that I can find) between 1998 and 2006. If something had been submitted in 2006, then it would be in publication by now. But I could find no evidence of it. I brought this up last week, but Adams refuses to state how many pubs he had in 2006. He could have easily corrected me.

Adams record says he is a good teacher. But his publication record is miserable after 1998. I considered teaching load, but that doesn't explain the "up then down" nature of his publication record. Perhaps you can explain it. Moreover, my main point (if you read it) was not so much that he had slacked off after tenure, but that he dishonestly accuses others (radical leftists!) of doing what he seems to have done (hypocrisy).

The aaup is an organization which functions as a collective bargaining unit at some universities (not that many). Your comment is misleading in that the collective bargaining is a very small portion of what the AAUP does (see their website).

I've never heard anything about the best journals having the highest page charges (they do have the most rigorous reviewing though) In psychology, there are no page charges, except for the two very worst journals. So I have no idea what you are talking about. What field are you in?

Rich D

Your sample of my teaching ratings is based on 16 ratings which is way too small a sample to be reliable (it's statistically worthless).

You also claim that Adams wrote 2 books and me 0. This is also an absurd comparison because Adams' books are not academic books: they are conservative propaganda.

All of this is silly. Comparing me and Adams is comparing apples and oranges. I've been around at least twice as long so it wouldn't be remotely fair to him.

Besides, it's silly to try to drag me down. Deal with the points that I made, which focused on 1) his lackluster post-tenure publication record; and 2) his use of his conservative cronies to attack his enemies (Rosa Fuller and me).

Yes, I'm tired. Having to read this nonsense has caused my typing-related synapses to weaken.

Dr. Douglas
Sir- You have yet to refute a signle assertion or statement of fact by Dr. Adams. Your behaviour is almost isdentical to the behaviour of the AAUP as criticized by Dr. Adams- mangling facts and making irrelevant comments.

Dr. Douglas
You're not impressed? Oh, boo hoo, it has been my greatest, my ONLY desire to impress you! (sarcasm ON) You obviously have no idea how a neuron works. As for your assertion that I have no idea how science works, I have studied, in great detail, including all the mathematics involved, the works of Newton, Gauss, Faraday, Maxwell, Davisson & Germer, Einstein, Boltzmann, Bohr, Schrodinger, and the great Watson & Krick. What those geniuses did was real science. What you do is mental masturbation. BTW, James Watson of DNA fame has come under fire recently for his ploitically incorrect statements that some people are a whole lot smarter than others. It is amusing to see you and Dr. Adams prove him correct.

Husker 2 "That's it! It can't be the University's fault! It can't be the bloated administrative budgets. It can't be instructors paid full-time salaries for 13 hours of work per week (including office hours)."

First, thanks for stepping in to respond to DR Douglas in my absence. I didn't get back to the thread until now. Your response was exactly my original point to Douglas and he came back with the sob story about colleges having to adjust their budget due to cuts in their tax funding. IOW they can no longer have budgets that expect the money cloud to rain money like it used to and somehow we are supposed to feel sorry for them now.

Second, I apologize for dragging you back into the discussion with Dr. Douglas as I see it was very difficult for you to let his comment go.

As a side note, my original post regarding Hillsdale College was accurate. Hilldale has no need to adjust their budgets due to decreases in tax funding because they do not recieve any tax money to begin with.

Dr. Douglas
Earlier I posted some sample salaries from Oregon State University.

You replied that those quotes were misleading. You stated that universities publish statistics like these to make themselves look better.

I actually got those salary statistics from a paper that tried to show that Oregon State employees were underpaid.

Dr Douglas
Since this column is already two days old, I'm not sure if you will even read this.

You are quite judgmental of the readers of Townhall. You base that on several posters who replied to your column.

You wrote: "I agree with you that the TH readers are basically anti-intellectual and can't be be carry out an intelligent discussion."

You should be aware that many readers of Townhall are accomplished, highly achieving, and intelligent.

In fact, one holds a high position at a much more prestigious university than OSU, has published more than you, and finds your posts boring and repetitive.

Dr. Douglas
Let me give you just one example of how absurd colleges can be when it comes to spending money needlessly.

You may have heard of the whole "green" builiding trend, right? Well some colleges (in order to be trendy?) require new construction projects to meet the green specifications.

There are a lot of data required to meet some of their standards. Like "mileage" that supplies for construction travel must be recorded for calculating the carbon impact.

Another is the landfill factor. A percentage of "recycled" material must be used for constructing the building to keep these products from entering the landfills.

In concrete masonry for example, they must manufacture the concrete block using this percentage of recyled materials in order to meet the requirements.

The problem with this theory is that the recycled products used in masonry units already have a 100% saleable market. IOW these product don't end up in the landfills and they never did. They are mostly aggregates that have limitless uses. Or glass products that also have been recylced for years. This only serves to drive up prices (basic supply and demand factor).

This is all done just to meet some phantom green standard that looks good on paper. These projects could cost much less than they do. But when money is no object, it seems neither is the lengths some will do to spend it.

Dr. Douglas
Regarding the column and the American Association of Unprincipled Progressives, or AAUP, can you cite examples of when they have come to the cause of conservatives on a college campus? That would be the most obvious way to refute Mike Adams.

Oh brother where art Thou?
dougie: "7:02 PM EST Towhhall removes my posts..."
Dr. ? no. "Towhhall", did you mean, 'TownHall' ?,
~~
dougie: " Townhall has removed my intial posts 2,3,4"
Dr. ? no. "intial", did you mean, 'initial' ?
~~
dougie: "Let's here it for free..."
Dr. ? no. "here", did you mean, 'hear' ?

dougie: "I have been called stupid, a liar, having a man-crush, impotent, and all of your other little slurs..."

OMG !!! Dang ! You finally got something correct!

Hi Rat, I have no comment except to say that sometimes a genius post bears repeating. Unlike the many posts that were "removed" from TH early on. Those do not need to be repeated.

Cheerios with milk and sugar. Sorry no Bonded Burbon today.

"Your sample of my teaching ratings is based on 16 ratings which is way too small a sample to be reliable (it's statistically worthless)."

But I posted the aggregate scores of those motivated to post either way. Check the totals.

"You also claim that Adams wrote 2 books and me 0. This is also an absurd comparison because Adams' books are not academic books: they are conservative propaganda."

Translation: I didn't like them so they don't count.

"All of this is silly. Comparing me and Adams is comparing apples and oranges. I've been around at least twice as long so it wouldn't be remotely fair to him."

For your many years (30?), I could find only a few joint articles by you (1997, 98), 10 hits on faculty senate proceedings, your retirement notice (06). Apparently, you were mostly a politician. Your old school lists you as an associate editor of one journal issue in 2002 under research news. You were also a reference for a womans studies prof who specialized in:

Systems of Oppression; Women, Power, & Self-Esteem; Women, Weight, & Eating Disorders; also panic attacks, binge eating, and body image of adolescent girls.

Apples and oranges, indeed.

Oh, did I mention that you were the president of the AAUP?

Dr. Adams Publications
Poor Dr. Dingleberry forgets that obscure publications aren't the only type available.

a turn of phrase
"Intellectual onanism" Wow! This is a term I will surely borrow but I wonder how many people are sufficiently acquainted with the Bible and moral theology to understand its meaning.

Dr. D:

Adams
I got my laughs right up front.

"General Conference of the National Association of Scholars in Washington, D.C. "

How did you manage to enter a room with
Scholars?

Husker2 8:38 AM to Dr Douglas
"You should be aware that many readers of Townhall are accomplished, highly achieving, and intelligent.

In fact, one holds a high position at a much more prestigious university than OSU, has published more than you, and finds your posts boring and repetitive."

There are more than one such THer. Just so you know, I have had civil exchanges of views with Dr Douglas.

But now I shall look away for a time.

Another publication for Adams
Earlier, I reported that Adams published articles in 1990, 1993, 1995, 1995, 1996, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2003. Now I have discovered that Adams reported another peer-reviewed publication in 2006. This additional article improves things, but his research record remains poor.

If we compute the number of articles published each year prior to tenure (1993-1998), we get 7/6 = 1.17 pubs per year. However, if we look at his post-tenure years as an associate professor (1999-2006), he has only 2/8 = .25 publications per year (He was denied promotion from associate to full professor in 2006). .25 publications per year would be considered very poor research performance for an associate professor. More important, the sharp decrease from 1.16 pre-tenure to .25 post-tenure publications suggests that something dramatic happened after he received tenure in 1998 (e.g., he slacked off). Note: I am still missing one of Adams' publications;

The important point is that Adams seems to specialize in attacking other academics, often in terms of their scholarship. Several weeks ago he claimed that “communists are attracted to academia because of the tenure system”, insinuating that this allowed leftists to slack off after receiving tenure. And yet this appears to be exactly what he himself is doing. This is extremely hypocritical.

Some of you think that my own performance is somehow relevant. Sorry, but this is not about me, the AAUP, or whatever distractions you attempt. But to set this BS aside, my research resulted in about 50 publications, $300,000 in federal grants, a position on three Editorial Boards, and a term as an Associate Editor for the top journal on emotion.

So rather than trying to invent shortcomings in me, what you need to do is to justify the huge drop in Adams' performance.

Dr. Douglas, the joker.
Here you have Dr. Douglas who concentrates solely on offering a comparative analysis on publications between himself and Dr. Adams.

How can this idiiiot of an academic compare and contrast himself in this light, when he has utterly failed in the refutation of any of Dr. Adams points.

The man is ridiculous in his attempts to cast the column or debate in purely an academic brain pan comparison using publications.

If Dr. Douglas believes he has attained intellectual superiority in his sad attempts to validate his posts, he has failed.

What Dr. Douglas has done is validate each and every point Dr. Adams has made in his column.

You would think a Phd like Dr. Douglas would have a level of shame he would apply to his responses that have been thoroughly discredited by multiple posters.

Shame, shame, shame, Dr. Douglas. An intellectual pygmy, such as yourself, should never engage in a battle of wits with Dr. Adams, or for that fact a 7th grade civics class, when you are intellectually unarmed, and unable to offer a rational response to basics.

Hubris, thy name is Douglas Derryberry
Having reread you "contributions" to this dialog, I conclude that you are the hypocrite for making attacks on Dr. Adams's professional accomplishments instead of responding to the article's points about the AAUP and acedemic freedom. The problem is, we see through your attempted smoke screen.

You claim research resulting in "50 publications", but I can't seem to find more than a few on line, even on your school's site. However, you bark about the number of Dr. Adams's publications that you can find on line as if it is a final number. For how many of those publications are you the sole author, one of two, and one of many? Actually, I don't care. Yeah, "Emotions" is a very important journal - we read it every day.

I don't really expect you to respond to Mike's points when it's more fun for you to engage in an academic p!ssing contest. In his very first article

http://townhall.com/columnists/MikeSAdams/2009/01/05/how_je sse_helms_helped_promote_diversity?page=full&comments=true

you immediately miscontrued his points and began to attack his scholarship (reply #20). You are the dishonest debater. I see one of two things here: A retired fraud who is laughing trying to tweak conservatives, or a white-knuckled red-faced angry old man with shaking hands spilling coffee pounding out vituperous responses for over two weeks. Put THAT in your emotion journal.

Mass Mailings
Mikee Adams has frequently employed his vengeful tactic of initiating mass mailings of hate mail directed at his critics. That too is immature and unintelligent, especially since he swears he's christian.

Thanks to Dr. Douglas
He is right on concerning Adams. Although all of Adams' ideas are not necessarily wrong, the way he goes about presenting them (passive/aggressive martyr), is unethical and disgusting.

Time for Adams to apologize

To the AAUP

To all academics

and to everyone else he has smeared

Vincent
By what standard are you judging the ethics of Mike Adams' tactics and can you offer up a reason why his methods are "unethical and disgusting?"
