Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Author’s Note: Dr. Adams will appear on The Inspiration Channel Saturday night, Nov. 15th at 9:00 pm EST. Tune in to Direct TV, Channel 364. He will speak at Western Michigan University, November 13th, 7 pm.

A few weeks ago, as I was walking across the campus of UNC-Wilmington, I heard an old familiar sound. A rap song was blaring from the general vicinity of the university amphitheater. I heard the n-word broadcast loudly (from over 100 yards away) so I decided to walk over to investigate the source of the racial epithet.

I must confess that I had an ulterior motive for seeking the source of the offensive epithet. The last time I heard an offensive word coming from the amphitheater it was an “Obama 2008” group that was playing profanity-laced rap music. I was hoping they were back so I could ask them to change their music to something other than the tired old songs about bitches, niggas, and hos. Like a crack addict voting for Obama I was hoping for a little change. And, of course, I was hoping for another chance to rib them in the wake of the Reverend Wright scandal.

Regrettably, when I got there, I saw that the source of the music was a university group called “ACE” that sponsors various events on campus – sometimes comedians, sometimes musical artists. So I turned around and walked to the university union to get a cup of coffee. That’s when I ran into Craig (not real name) who is president of the Alpha Epsilon Sigma fraternity (also not real name and, hereafter, referred to as the As).

Craig and I spend a few minutes talking about the latest free speech scandal at UNCW. It all began when the As were playing another fraternity called the Alpha Kappas (also not real name and, hereafter, referred to as the AKs) in an intramural football game. Because the As and AKs were both founded in the South around the time of the Civil War, they occasionally try to “out-Southern” one another. That was the case during their intramural match and that is when the trouble began.

When the As decided to parade around the football field with a banner – an activity taking only a couple of minutes – they gave little thought to the small Confederate Flag that was displayed along with their fraternity crest and fraternity name. Again, lest there be any confusion, the kids were not carrying a Confederate Flag – an activity, which is clearly protected by the First Amendment. They were carrying a large banner a small part of which was covered by a representation of the Confederate Flag.

Regrettably, a lower-level administrator at UNCW decided to reprimand the As for parading around with a “symbol of hatred.” The As were told in no uncertain terms that the Confederate Flag was not protected free speech, presumably because it violates one or more of our university’s unconstitutional (read: illegal) speech codes.

It never really mattered to the constitutionally ignorant UNCW administrator (please pardon any redundancy) that there were no blacks who were present and offended by the “symbol of hatred.” Nor did it matter that no AKs were offended. Nor did it matter that the AKs later offered to write a letter to the university explaining that they were not offended. Nor did it matter that ACE (remember, the group that broadcast the n-word?) was given exactly $60,000 of public funds by the university to be spent on a concert. They used the $60,000 to hire a rapper to call women bitches and hos and to use the n-word. Five years later, no administrator has been punished for promoting racial hatred.

But the As were punished. They were banned from participating in intramural sports for the rest of the academic year. Their student activity fees will go to other groups who use it to broadcast the n-word while they are banned from engaging in certain student activities. This is all happening at a university with a chancellor from New York who is too ethnocentric to understand fully what the Confederate Flag means to Southerners.

Last week, the president of the punished fraternity asked me for a favor. Specifically, he asked that I not publish his name or the name of his fraternity should I decide to write about the Confederate Flag incident. I’ve kept my promise. But I’m still mad as hell. And I’m asking my readers to do one of two things about it:

First, I want everyone reading this column to send a check to the following address:

Office of the Chancellor
Alderman Hall/UNCW
Wilmington, NC 28403

Make the check out for $0.02. Write “Confederate Flag Incident” in the memo line. Then, for tax purposes, ask for a receipt for your contribution to UNCW. This will mean that the university will lose $.40 for every reader participating. By the time you have finished reading this column, I will have sent out 250,000 copies. That means, if all of you participate, the university will lose about $100,000 for their punishment of the fraternity that offended no one but was still punished.

Second, I want those of you who prefer sending cash contributions to send only confederate money. If you can’t get your hands on some artificial Confederate cash then just send a small folded Confederate Flag to our beloved chancellor from New York.

Again, that address is:

Office of the Chancellor
Alderman Hall/UNCW
Wilmington, NC 28403

Part of the reason Craig asked me not to include real names in this column is that he does not want to see anyone fired. But I do want to see the people responsible for punishing the As fired. And I want to see their taillights fading as they head north on I-95 in search of a new job somewhere north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Ya gotta love it!
University hyprocisy at its finest. The speech, and thought police strike again.

Good luck with the fundraiser. I can contribute. It is within my budget.

GREAT IDEA!
Great idea, Mike. I just hope the chancellor (or his administrative assistants) don't "accidentally" toss out the checks. You know the postal service. Those envelopes might have "never even arrived" at the UNC campus. Maybe "Bipartisan" Barack should write the chancellor and tell him that the flag thing was no big deal. In hoc.

A Troubling Article!!
I've never quite understood how the "Stars & Bars" has become, or has always been a Sign of Hatred..
I don't see as many of these flags/decals on pickups around here as I once did, but I've always thought of it as a "Redneck" thing and in No way a sign of hating anyone..
I've been a REDNeck most of my life but I don't anyone!! Guess I'd best buy myself a dozen or two of those symbols tomorrow,,, HAVE A NICE DAY

Hand-delivered
Just to make sure there is no screw up with the postal service delivering my check, I will be hand-delivering it tomorrow afternoon.

I'd hoped we might get a column of
some substance. Guess we'll just have to wait till next week! (Your white identity politics are becoming quite tiresome, Michael).

I see North Carolina turned BLUE this Tuesday! Haha! And that smear-merchant Libby Dole got unceremoniously kicked to the curb by the good people of N.C.!

Mike - Did you notice that although prop 8 lost in California, it lost only by a 52%-48% margin? If you remember, the last ban on s/s marriage was in 2000 (then called prop 22) which was supported by 61% of CA voters. 8 years later -- from 61% to a measly 48%, and this after the mormon church flooded million and millions from out-of-state (over $15 million) into our state's "Yes on 8" campaign. We all know that acceptance of gay marriage is only 2 or 4 years off!

Unless those liberty-minded activist judges on the CA Supreme Court get around to declaring prop 8 unconstitutional first! (the same judges that legalized s/s marriage in the first place). Then CA will once again be the vangaurd for "life, liberty adn the pursuit of happiness".

Oh, and VIVA president Obama! Finally, rationality and clear measured thinking in the White House again. Common sense wins the day! And what a new, sweet beautiful day it is!

Cheers everyone.

I will send my 2 cents
But I would like to see all the students show up wearing a small confederate flag somewhere on their person.

If there is any hate in this, its from the Chancellor

Where's the ACLU?
Look - they're shutting down everyone's freedom of speech from Joe the plumber to Rush to the worker who wants to vote in private. This is how they operate.

Mike Adams
This is likely to be the only sort of protest available soon. I'll contribute $0.02 to cost a PC idiot 20 to 1 anytime. Rather than contribute a couple hundred bucks a year to the GOP, for which i got Hastert, Boehner, McCain and their cohorts, i think this kind of protest is much more effective.

What if I said MLK was offensive
People would jump down my throat and string me up...right

Well, MLK is a part of our AMERICAN history just like the Stars and Bars.

It's become so maligned it's crazy. It's not hatred it's heritage just like "I have a dream".

My ancestors fought on both sides in the war between the states and each stood up for what they believed.
Originally the war was about keeping the union together then the issues were slavery and states right to govern themselves under the 9th and 10 Amendments.

It's history folks not hate and because "race" and other "civil" issues were harped on and beaten into our heads by the looney left and MSM in the bid for the oval office it doesn't mean we should forget all of American History good bad or indifferent.

Hakuna Matata...it's a trouble free philosophy

The Confederate Flag...
stands for a way of life. A culture that is important to the descendants of Confederate soldiers. We all know that the civil war was not specifically about slavery, which was a small part, but more specifically about states rights. In fact the south was already in the process of negotiating the end of slavery. Many had already freed their slaves.
The north had done so only because of the growth of the industrial complex and farming machinery which the south did not have. To realease their slaves at that point would mean surfire ruin for large farm owners. Many Northerners took their slaves to the south to sell them rather than release them. In fact my own state of New jersey had living slaves right up until the 1840s.
This is in no way a defense of slavery, but to add context. Something the left with their revisionist history and talking points seem to ignore.
Just as American history in general has been revised to castigate the founders and portray America as evil while ignoring ten fold worse in other countries around the globe and the gutting of American ideals that served us well.
Remeber, slavery existed before biblical times and was brought here by the colonists. It still exists in Muslim countries and parts of Africa today, yet we hear no admonishments from the left in that regard. America s a work in progress has made tremendous progress from it's inception to right wrongs...based on conscience formed through those judeo-Christian founding principals that the left now find offenseive as well.

Stars and Bars forever!
Heck! Darn! Blow it all! I'm an Entitled-to-a-Hyphen immigrant American (an AMERICAN!-American! - that is!) and get as mad as Hell at just the mention of the traitor, Lincoln's name -- let alone at thinking about his attack upon and capture and forced colonization of the Seceded Southern States of America.

So it will be my great pleasure to write to your Stars and Bars-hating damned Yankee leader-from-the-rear and have her send me a receipt for my Two Cents Worth!

Slavery is wrong, but welfare is ok?
What's the difference? LBJ's war on poverty did as much to destroy the black family (1965 thru the present day) as slavery did back then. All that was done was trade one master for Uncle Sam's welfare check! And now the Demacrats are the new plantation owners. What a country!

great column
Great column Mike - the "Stars & Bars" along with the old song, "Dixie" are indeed history & heritage and not hatred. As for koolmuse in ca...your liberal paranoia is showing.

Barry The Great Redeemer...
An undistinguished, left-wing lawyer, whom Oprah and Spike Lee worked tirelessly to put in office, is somehow going to "fix" the economy, "heal the planet" and give "tax cuts" to those who don't actually pay federal income tax. Interesting.

Terrific column from England, skewering the "Teleprompter Jesus".

As a Yankee I'd like to suggest:
Reading the Politically Incorrect Guide to the South. Northern liberals, particularly politicians and journalists, NEVER get to know any southerners except for the resident liberals they stumble across.

If a norther journalist sees a pickup with a gun rack go by he stops right there because he's got his story. "Bubbas, guns and racism", especially if there's a Confederate Battle Flag (NOT the "Confederate flag") on the antenna. He probably won't notice the driver's black buddy also in a John Deere cap sitting next to him.

Soli Deo Gloria!!

"For the first time in my life...
...I am proud of America"!

Did you find that offensive? If so,what should be done about it?

Get used to it
Get used to it. It's only the beginning. Don't be surprised if 50 cent will "sing" The Black National Anthem at the inauguration. Or maybe his homies will have a shoot out with P Diddy's crew to decide who will get the gig.

I just threatened to quit a health club-
Because they were playing hip hop scum music with racial slurs on whites, including "white ho'" and "white trash" and "this n i g g a gonna get some honky . . . " {got a warming from TH re the word, that is part of our problem as conservatives -- we are scared of the truth and will continue losing elections . . . .)

Made me sick so I said stop the music or I quit. The girl at the counter put up a short fight. But I told her my civil rights were being violated and that I felt personally threatened by the "tunes."

Take back America one step at a time. Start like this. No, the gang banger types sitting behind were not very happy. SO WHAT! Get a pair, and pack some heat. Show some guts.

Because it could be your little girl or boy who is exposed to this violent cultural smackdown next.

Great Article
It shows just how neurotically twisted our society will become in the years ahead when students from universities such as UNC graduate. A note of scientific fact: The brain is not fully mature until a person reaches their late twenties. So once a student of higher dummification is released upon society it can take decades for them to learn how to think for themselves only to discover that the values they held near and dear during their college freak fest days were a bit short sighted and void of common sense. Unfortunately, many will never this epiphany at all. I'll be sending my $0.02 check today! NOW GET BACK TO WORK! Millions of illegal immigrants on welfare are depending on YOU!
May God bless you all.

Please don't do it...
Mike,
Seriously man can't you keep them!? Please don't send them back north... I got enough of them damn Liberals to deal with! Maybe you could send IT to Cuba instead.

Mac . . . in NJ

You are very correct, my friend.

I have a degree in Mediterranean and Ottoman history, and I am very familiar with the history of Northern and Saharan Africa. The Arabs and other Muslims were in control of a widespread African slave trade for at least 800 years before any Renaissance-era European slave-trading ships ever landed in West Africa. Before the Spanish capture of much of the Americas, Europeans made up a significant portion of those enslaved by Arabs, Berbers and Turks. It is very telling that people like "koolmuse" and "will" never even addressed the SPECIFIC point about the double-standards that Mr. Adams raised in his article.
One cannot truly understand history without understanding social, economic and cultural CONTEXT. America, like the whole world, is, indeed, a work in progress. It has been my experience that it is MOSTLY ILLIBERAL "liberals" and Leftists who are obsessed with the Civil War, rather than true limited-government conservatives and southerners. Much of the "Liberal"/Left act as if NOTHING has changed for the better, or that the South has not changed at all . . . an assumption which is manifest nonsense.
Confederates may have been "traitors" to many Northerners, but the principles of de-centralized and limited government, and state's rights, were the bedrock foundation of the beliefs of many of the Framers of the Constitution. The RIGHT of secession -- under some circumstances -- was widely held as obvious by many who ultimately voted to ratify the Constitution.

FYI
The Stars and Bars was not the flag of the Confederacy. It was a battle banner. Please note that it is usually square. The Bonnie Blue was the flag of the Confederacy. I doubt you know what it looks like.

XLNT suggestion!

Obama Spiritial Advisors bring Healing

"White people are potential humans - they haven't evolved yet."
Louis Farrakhan Philadelphia Inquirer, March 2000

"The white man is our mortal enemy, and we cannot accept him. I will fight to see that vicious beast go down into the late of fire prepared for him from the beginning, that he never rise again to give any innocent black man, woman or child the hell that he has delighted in pouring on us for 400 years." -- Louis Farrakhan, City College audience in New York

"White folks was in caves while we was building empires... We taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it." -- Rev. Al Sharpton

"In South Africa we'd call it Apartheid. In Nazi Germany we'd call it fascism. Here we call it conservatism. These people are attacking the poor." -- Jesse Jackson

"...And he (Barack Obama) has involved young people in a political process that they didn't care anything about. When the Messiah speaks, the youth will hear, and the Messiah is absolutely speaking." Louis Farrakhan

"Whiteness, as revealed in the history of America, is the expression of what is wrong with man. It is a symbol of man's depravity. God cannot be white, even though white churches have portrayed him as white. When we look at what whiteness has done to the minds of men in this country, we can see clearly what the New Testament meant when it spoke of the principalities and powers."
- James H. Cone; Black Theology & Black Power; p 150

Right on!
What would we do without voices like Mike's to keep the liberal academic illuminati honest? This kind of hypocrisy is appalling.

Primarily for Ann of NC
Prof Adams may be a "blowhard" as you claim but somebody better do something soon, or we will all lost our right to free speech. While it's true that the KKK and such organizations have tarnished the once proud regional image of the "Stars and Bars", display of the flag still should be protected, as much, or even more so than the flithy, derogatory, and demeaning hate speech called "rap." Additionally, it should be obvious to everyone that liberals are continuing to rewrite history, plus they wish to destroy any semblance of Southern pride. There are also a some organizations, such as Sons of Confederate Veterans, that openly display the Confederate flag, and defy the conception that it is a symbol of hate. When are people going to wake up and start thinking for themselves? History has taught us that to deny one person the unalienable right of free speech and free expression, denies it to all of US!
Wake up Ann - You might learn something from a "blowhard."

What does treason mean?
The Confederacy was in revolution against the federal government of The United States. Doesn't that constitute some level of treason? Why would anyone want to celebrate treason with any flag associated with that treason?

If one is going to quote the lady, give us the exact quote, or else you're coming close to lying. She said, "..for the first time in my adult life, I'm really proud to be an American." Without the intensifier "really," the quote is inaccurate and reflects badly on the person making the quote than the person making the statement.

Interesting . . .

Isn't it curious that whenever misogynistic, sexist and racist comments are made in the "music" of black "rappers", it is often casually brushed off by white "liberals" as just an African-American cultural "idiosyncrasy"?
The same kind of behavior, if and when displayed by white "rednecks", would USUALLY be lambasted by the same "liberals" as something "despicable" and "Fascist".

Anne in NC
Well, as a graduate of one of NC's fine universities (BA, Wake Forest, 1979) who has eight years more formal education (MD, West Virginia U., 1983, and four years of residency training in psychiatry), and more than two thousand hours of continuing education as well as hundreds of hours of personal study of numerous topics, I am no uneducated rube. Furhter, I live in Charlotte, not one of those small towns you attempt to praise with faint damnation. I did, however, grow up in West Virginia, son of Roosevelt Democrats.

So, given all this, I must say that you are the ignorant one here. The Democrat party in this state is corrupt to the core: The former Speaker of the House is in prison as we speak. The former Commissioner of Agriculture (daughter and granddaughter of former governors) just got out this past summer (during her trial, it was revealed that Gov. Daddy was the bag man for the bribe money she took). A former Mecklenburg Elections Commissioner spent a few years in the hoosegow a short time back, blaming his crimes on his his use of marijuana (at age 70!). And let's not forget Mike Nifong, as much as you Dems would like us to.

I can tell that your daughters and her friends are products of NC's failed and further failing public education system. I thank God Almighty that I can send my daughters to independent schools. And I thank God for educators like Doctor Mike Adams who are trying to save our children by reforming education in this state and nation.

Ann's survey
Wow Ann! You talked to four stuents and they talked to the whole campus - interviewed thousands, I quess - and NO ONE not one person takes Adams seriously!

Great journalism!

Koolmuse
All during history there have been slaves (romans, jews). The difference with these groups is that they put it behind them and did not become permanent victims. So 50 years ago Blacks had a tough time. Deal with it. Life isn't always fair. I did not unlike you have any white guilt that forced me to vote for Obama. I never owned any slaves. I treat each person the same regardless of what they are.

By the way the National Institute on Drug Policy states that blacks make up 82% of crack addicts. Since 96% of blacks voted for Obama. Well you do the math. Facts are stuborn things.

side note Ann
Ann, Dr. Adams has organized (successfully) litigation against the UNC system. Furthermore, his threats of litigation has resulted in several policy changes - App State and UNCG, for starters.

Administrators do take litigation seriously. That's why they take Adams seriously.

The kids you spoke of who don't know who Adams is are just typical college kids. Too busy getting drunk and having sex to be aware of their surroundings.

Waving Goodbye to America
Thanks, BCWest, for that referral to the Peter Hitchens column. At least one columnist understands what is happening to America!

Racism and Hate Speech Examples

Example of Racism:
Barack Hussein Obama - This is a racist because of using Obama's middle name.

------------------------------

Example of What is Not Racism:
"The white man is our mortal enemy, and we cannot accept him." Louis Farrakhan

This is NOT racism because only whites can be racist.

------------------------------

Example of Hate Speech:
Homosexuality is deviant and not normal.

Example of what is NOT hate speech:
"Kill all the rich people. ... Bring the revolution home. Kill your parents."
William 'Bill' Ayers - Obama's friend and adviser.

I'm sure all those opposed
to the display of the Confederate flag, saw nothing wrong with all the protesting Hispanics who displayed the Mexican flag.

I'm sure when Hispanics display the Mexican flag, such behavior is deemed by liberals as freedom of expression.

Funny how freedom of expression is only free when one agrees with the Libs.

Treason?
The states that left the Union did so peacefully or as peacefully as they could. The United States Constitution did not prohibit states from leaving the Union. That right was just not written down in the document. The proper name for the war is "The War of Northern Aggression"

After "The War" was over the United States Supreme Court ruled that a state enters the Union, it can not leave. The ruling was about six years too late.

Flying the Confederate Flag these days has more to do with the color of you neck than with much of anything else.

Pardon the cliche...
...but the check is in the mail. If they decided to burn the AMERICAN flag, well thats just free speech. Lets try to look at the context and intent of the incident instead of simply jumping down someone's throat.

Prop 8 & individual liberties. Stay Right eeryone!

The North and South
Generally speaking, I have divide the country as the south (Conservative) and the North East as (Liberal, including Illinois), then the West Coastal States also have to be classed as Liberal!

That leaves most of the United States as basically Conservative.

Having stated that, I am in favor of exactly what the author suggested!

Leob

Secession Will Succeed This Time
As the great grandson of a Civil War veteran, I predict that sometime in the near future states will begin to secede from the Union again--and this time no one will care, least of all the elites on each coast. Having read Jim Webb's book about the Scots-Irish, who did most of the fighting for the Confederates, I would bet it will be a southern state, but don't count out Alaska: Its citizens could make a ton of money selling oil throughout the world but not to the U.S. because the effete, liberal environmentalists who are content to ride bicyles to work and hope "Global Warming" will heat their homes.

Contact FIRE
No matter what one thinks of the Confederate battle flag and those who choose to display it, such display is absolutely protected by the U.S. Constitution. Instead of buckling under to the administration, the students should contact the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, FIRE, which will come to their aid with a vengance.

And Mike, you should have advised them to do the same. Your email case from years ago has been prominently discussed by FIRE.

Mountaineer

well
I do not see the Confederate Flag or Confederate Battle Flag as a symbol of racism. For many it is history and heritage. As such, I don’t think it should be repressed. Unfortunately, that flag has been expropriated by some racist groups. Furthermore the CSA did have as one of its many aspects a slave based economy. If you choose to display the flag, you must also shoulder that burden. I think it would be much more significant if folks like Dr. Adams would acknowledge and repudiate any racist connotations with the flag as the Sons of the Confederacy did some years ago. Within this thread there are enough racist statements to prove this action necessary.

I do not think of the Confederacy as an evil nation nor do I fault them for their secession. While I think the Confederate Flag should not fly over any government buildings, it should fly forever over the graves of the men who fought for it.

As for Adams’ suggestion; it is as childish as his views in the matter. It is another example of how he makes his stand from the rear.

William -> Marxist/Socialist from NJ
Democrat/Socialists have been funding and sending 'troops' to the Democrats "War on Poverty" for over 40 years now with no end in sight.

The Democrat/Socialists "War on Poverty" is an abject failure and there has been hundreds of thousands of casualties.

The Democrat/Socialists "War on Poverty" built 'Government Crime Centers' to concentrate those they are at war with that even the police are afraid to go into.

These Democrat/Socialist 'Crime Centers' produces illegal drug distributors, killers, prostitutes, child abusers, hundreds of thousands babies killed through abortions and tens of thousands of rapes.

The Democrat/Socialists funded 'War on Poverty' has succeeded in increasing poverty, crime, drug addicts, 70% illegitimacy rates and the highest prison population in the world.

"In 2006, blacks, who are less than 13 percent of the population, were 37.5 percent of all state and federal prisoners."
-----------------------------------------------
When will Liberals realize that government supported crime centers (urban housing) are a major source of crime?
-----------------------------------------------
FBI and Department of Justice
11,249 agencies; 2006 estimated population 216,685,152 for 2006

Robbery: 67.4% Black

18 years old and older percent of all:

Liberal/Socialist solutions caused black children to be raised without a Father - Liberal/Socialist solutions caused black children to be raised in schools without discipline and God.

will and mikeR
I'm sure, MikeR, tha Will would like it if you would make your stand from the rear. With the common courtesy of a reach around to boot.

koolmuse and Gene Touchet
Perhaps if the two of you would do a little historical research, you might find that most of what you have been taught about the civil war is at best suspect and in most cases just flat out wrong. But if facts meant anything to you, you could not support "The One", so I guess I am wasting my time addressing your submittals. My apologies to the thinking correspondents.

ALL
Someone should tell that UNCW administrator that when "they" get the next civil war started, they will see a hell of lot more 'confederate' flags flying than there were in 1861.

contribution
my check is in the mail.

Oh please Wiliam
You take away the red states (more like red counties) and the blue states have no food or military.

I'm not sure you are aware of this but when you go to the store they don't generate the food somewhere in the back with mysterious Harry Potter like magic. Food is actually grown then processed by people.

That being said I'm all for secession. My one caveat people who choose to live in the blue states may never immigrate to red states and the red states secure their borders with guns.

Well said Mike!
God Bless You, Mike! We need more folks CALLIN' OUT these idiots!

Am sending my check immediately.

stars and bars
was the first national flag, not the flag commonly known as confederate battle flag, CBF, or just confederate flag.

The problem of the CBF is its association with the time of the ACW centennial which coincided with the civil rights movement. The CBF was widely embraced as an anti-civil rights, anti-black symbol by white southrons.

If the SCV and other neocons want the CBF as a symbol of their (not southern obviously but rather white southern) heritage they need to get rid of the anti-black baggage. And enough with the manufactured "black confederate veterans". What a joke. Just as the "south leaving peacefully" myth. A few minutes googling will easily show long lists of hostile acts conducted by southern states or those claiming to act in their interests prior to any so-called secession.

Dixie Land
I'm an upper middle class stay at home mom who does in fact have a Confederate flag sticker on the bumper of my mini van and a front plate that says Dixie land. I also have a large flag in my game room. I dont expect anyone, including William from NJ, to understand what it is we love, or maybe its just me, about the South. Not everyone here owned slaves. And in fact there were more indentured servants then slaves. I am lucky and proud to display it. . If you want to talk about injustice, talk about the Native Americans.

William
It must be horrible to live hating your skin color. Your white guilt is truly amazing. Perhaps you should find a black family and write them your own personal reparations check.
I am sure that will help your guilt.

I am very impressed that the North has so many good schools. I actually atended one (Brown) where I found the most closed minded people I ever met. They talk about diversity but do not accept diversity of thought. By the way Harvard (#1) has a war memorial to its alumni dead. On the list are Nazi soldiers that died during WW2. Very classy.

As for the crack conversation. I believe Koolmuse made a statement that I was disagreeing with. But leave it to a Liberal to change the subject as soon as things don't go his way. If you would like to discuss cocaine and meth use that would be fine by me.

I see you live in NJ. I had the misfortune of living there when I worked on Wall Street. All I remember is that everyone complained about how heavily taxed they were, but kept electing Liberals to office. They then stood around scratching their heads trying to figure out where their paycheck went. Talk about stupid.

Good luck writing that reparations check. Let me know when its done. I have a feeling I will never hear from you.

Poorly-taught history classes
There are so many incorrect comments here, that I seriously recommend some refresher history.

Secession of States is a legal action that had been taught as such at West Point for several years prior to the invasion of the Confederate States of America by the forces of the USA. The textbook that was used (Rawls) can still be purchased.

Lincoln's unconstitutional invasion of the South is the primary act that initiated the War. He did this of his own volition, without any act of Congress, due to personal commitments he had made to industry leaders in the Northeast.

Prior to this, the bulk of the wealth of the nation was concentrated in the South. The tariffs in the South funded about 75-90% of the treasury of the USA, while 75-90% of the improvement budget went to the North.

The CSA had three different national flags, the first of which was called "the Stars and Bars". The second was called "the Stainless
Banner". The third was a variation of the second.

The flag that receives all of the attacks is the "Confederate Battle Flag", which is actually a field banner which was used by some, but not all Confederate troops to show their locations when being identified through binoculars. This is actually a variation of the Scottish Saltire (national flag).

Due to circumstances at the time, many Scots-Irish left both Scotland and Ulster to come to North America. Many settled in Canada, but the majority entered the USA via the mid-Atlantic states and followed a couple of regular routes which led to their settlement in the South. As a result, the South became very Celtic culturally. Today, the largest Scottish/Celtic Festival in the world is in Georgia, and the largest Scottish Military Tattoo is in Virginia, though the origins of both were in Scotland/Ulster.

Senator James Webb accurately describes this Celtic move South in his book, "Born Fighting".

When you were attempting to make fun of anyone who displays the Confederate flag you spelled "trailer" incorrectly. It is not "trailor."

I had typed my letter to the Chancellor and sealed it--with my check--in an envelope, ready to mail, when a paralyzing thought struck me: that check bears all the information needed for a hacker to clean out my bank account!

So I taped a couple of pennies to the letter instead.

So what is your disagreement with my post? Are you such a sheep that you can’t tolerate even the slightest variation from the herd? Your post typifies my complaint. It is void of all thought and reason and made purely to insult. The only funny part is how someone on this thread will eventually equate such comments to liberals and other will chime in with agreement, blithely ignoring your similarity.

NO..............
I will never give up my Confederate flag - a reminder of my Southern Heritage and my great grandfather's pride of serving in the Confederate Army.

NO, I will never give up my Yankee Civil War flag as it is a reminder of my Northern Heritage and the pride my other great grandfather had in serving in the Union army. For the same reason our men and womem join the military today - to protect our country.

My southern great grandfather owned no slaves and he joined the Confederate Army to protect his country - the Confederate states. The same goes for my northern great grandfather.

Flying my Confederate flag does not mean I am racist. I am not. It means my pride in what it respresents to me and only me. I can't believe now, in the 21st Century, there is such discrimination against this little piece of American history and how it has come to represent a painful symbol to the blacks today. I doubt that anyone alive today has a parent or a grandparent that was a slave 200 years ago. We can't rewrite history but we can all stand together and make sure it never happens again. We are in a new era, a new age, and with the election of our new President we can only hope that he will be the one to lead us in that direction.

Real CSA money is valuable and they could sell it and make a profit. The smaller notes are very valuable. As inflation ran wild as the CSA's fortunes became dimmer and dimmer, the smaller notes were replaced by larger and larger notes. These are more common but no less valuable.

Instead, go to a store that has civil war related material or a visitor center at a civil war historic site, they will sell reproductions of the notes...and usually the small notes. You may can find these online. Since Confederate currency is not legal tender, I doubt you could be charged with counterfeiting. I wonder if the administrators at the UNCW know that the current NC state flag is basically a Confederate flag.

The trouble today is everything offends somebody. This country has become a nation of the offended. The left unlike conservatives are offended when someone talks about God, when someone talks about Patriotism, when someone talks about marriage and what ever they want to make up. What is next with the left being offended if you have brown eyes? Trouble with the left is freedom of the speech is only freedom of speech if you agree with them not if you disagree. If you disagree you are being offensive.

Anne,
I hear your point, but you miss one of the author's main points: doing offensive things is apparently only deplorable in one direction (in favor of gays, minorities, and women). Thus, blaring rap music that talks about niggas, hos, and the like gets no reprimand -- when you probably agree it should -- and displaying a small confederate flag is sanctioned. Why the disgraceful double standard?

It seems that coming down on hurtful speech or actions always seems to go one way and is not reciprocated.

WILLIAM...
Hey! Don't forget Texas! We don't need you Northerners at all. We can stand alone with our agriculture, oil, industry, universities, medical centers and military.

And where do you get your "facts"? The same place ABC gets theirs?

Are you black, by the way?

E.D.
The flag that people get all upset about is not even the Confederate Battle Flag (actually known at the Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia). This flag was square. The flag people call the battle flag is really the Second (and offical) Confederate Naval Jack, it flew on the stern of the ships while in port. When the national flag was changed to the Second National Flag of the Confederacy in May of 1863, the Confederate Navy adopted the canton of the flag as its jack but made it rectangular. There was some use of the flag for land units. The Army of the Tennessee in 1864 adopted the flag as its colors. It had ordered the square version (as was standard for the Confederate Army) but a mistake by the Atlanta Depot sent them the rectangular version instead.

Hardee's Corps which was part of the A.T. used a flag which was a white circle on a blue field and known as the Hardee's Corps flag.

Random Thoughts
As mentioned above, the official Confederate flag, correctly called the "Stars and Bars," is not the better known Confederate Battle flag. The Stars and Bars is not as well known and consequently can be seen flying without controversy, so far, here in Virginia - particularly in the Shenandoah Valley (lots of civil war battles fought there). The Stars and Bars can be recognized as being similar to Ol' Glory with a blue field in the upper left containing a circle of stars and three wide horizontal stripes (bars): red at the top, white in the middle, a red again at the bottom. Those of us who are proud of our Southern Heritage can fly this flag without incurring the wrath that the confederate battle flag draws. (See http://www.confederateflags.org/national/FOTCs_b.htm for an illustration.)

Treason
"The Confederate flag is a symbol of treason."

So is the US flag.

"And y'all lost that evilest of wars besides?"

How was it evil...oh you mean the war crimes at the hands of the Union Army. Okay, I agree, but Lincoln and the rest were never prosecuted for them. Well Lincoln was in a way.

"Why would the "we're more patriotic than you are" conservatives embrace such a symbol? "

I'm not patriotic toward the US. And perhaps because they support state-rights and are against Federal tyranny. When the Federal government can tell you what ligh bulbs to use, that is tyranny, pure and simple.

"One could say it is a symbol of Southern White Christian Jihad of the 1860s."

You could say that but it would make you an idiot. The goals of Al Qaeda and the goals of the CSA have nothing to do with each other and if Lincoln had simply let the south peacefully leave the Union no one would have died would they?

"The Confederacy was a White Christian conservative anti-American-government violent revolution dedicated to the institution of slavery."

Mostly false few in the Confederate Army which the so-called Confederate Flag was designed by owned slaves. General Pat Cleburne propose don January 4, 1864 to free the slaves in exchange for their service in the Confederate Army. Blacks also fought for the CSA, small numbers, yes, but they did in fact fight.

Racism is alive? Anything that he posted suggest him thinks whites are superior to blacks?

Prof Adams
No way! We have enough screwball lefties up North already! You keep yours and torture them there.

Stars and Bars
The flag people find offensive is NOT the Stars and Bars which was the First National Flag of the Confederacy which was the offical national flag from March 1861 until May 1863. It had three bars of red, white and red with a blue canton of 7 to 17 stars in a circle in white. The current Georgia flag is almost an exact replica of it.

The offensive flag is the misnamed Confederate Battleflag or simply "The Confederate Flag" which while it has both stars (13 of them) and bars, it is not THE Stars and Bars.

NJ Mike
I see you avoided a lot of my questions.

I still see you are not writing that reparations check. You talk a big game.

I also noted you had nothing to say about that messy little Harvard incident.

If you don't mind paying taxes why do you care about the bank bailout. After all you don't care.

Now for welfare. Blacks account for 13% of the population but receive 40% of welfare payments. Whites are 68% of the population and receive 40% benefits. That means the black welfare # is 3 times their population %. Facts Mike facts.

Then you were quoted national FBI crime stats and respond with the Rockefeller drug laws. The Rocefeller laws only apply in NY so I doubt they sway the national average in any significant way.

Next why are the Rockefeller laws unfair to blacks. Read the statutes they are color blind. Unless of course you are saying that there are more black drug dealers then white. A very racist assumption on your part.

Now for Harlem. You fail to mention that under the Guiliani administration an additional 10,000 cops were hired. An uneven number of them were assigned to Harlem. Harlem represents 5% of NYC population but received 26% of these new cops.

Also as the percentage of violent crime plunged in the city to an all time low , the % in Harlem ony dropped half the city average. Not exactly the oasis you claim it to be.

Since you obviously do not understand facts and statistics maybe you shoud enroll in one of those universities you are so proud of. If you can get in.

By the way my wife is Latin. I like the color of her skin in winter to.

William of NJ,

Hell, one county in Ind. could beat the socks off of NJ..LOL

Until 1983, Ole Miss used the flag as its de facto symbol (the desire to recruit blacks in football and basketball doomed the flag). Gasp, there are even Ph.Ds I am told that teach there. And there is a Confederate Avenue, should Ole Miss change the name? How about the Confederate war dead buried on campus (why there is a Confederate Avenue) dig them up? The Lyceum and Barnard Observatory was used to house dying and dead soldiers during the war, should these be burned down? I guess the name Rebels is taboo. UNLV? Its colors come from the uniforms of the Confederate Army--Red and Grey, in more "primative" times its mascot was a wolf in a Confederate uniform. Yep, called the Rebels too. I am told both UNLV and Ole Miss have Ph.Ds and students in various advanced degree programs, so not everyone must be so stupid. Much better be a Rebel than some stupid bird like UNCW has.

Hey NJ William
Where are my answers and your response. Trying to manufacture some incorrect stats.

Great way to use numbers, Mike from OK..
but you don't say what percentage of the black population is on welfare, just what percentage of the welfare population is black. So of course, you're simply using statistics to mislead. So the real question would be "what % of the black population receives welfare benefits?"

Since you obviously know how to mislead with statistics, maybe you have already graduated from one of those universities that the other Mike is so proud of...if you could have gotten in.

The Bonnie Blue flag was a pre-Confederate flag that various states used after secession but before the CSA was formed in February 1861. It looks like the flag of Somalia--a light blue field with a single white star in the center.

It was never the flag of the CSA. The first flag of the CSA being "the Stars and Bars," but your comment about the "Confederate Battleflag" is correct.

At the time there were a number of secessionist flags including the present day flag of South Carolina, the South Carolina Sovereignty (A blue cross of 14 stars in white, the center star larger than the other 13 with the crescent moon and palmetto palm in the upper left on a field of red), Blue Bonnie, and others.

Outside of the Confederate Battleflag (so-called) and the Second and Third National Flags (which have the battleflag as the canton) few would recognize other Confederate flags--Hardee's Corps flag for example.

Anne
"It is hurtful and offensive to many of their neighbors, so why do it."

Lots of things are hurtful and offensive. You do not have a right not to be offended. If you have issues with a piece of cloth dyed in various colors (that includes the US flag--for or against it) you have bigger problems.

Don't like the Confederate Flag? Fly your own--fly the ANC flag or the PAC flag or a flag with Obama's super sized face on it like some flag you'd see in North Korea.

I found Obama yard signs and bumber stickers offensive frankly. I don't likt the flag of the PRC (even if it is a very pretty flag, a few things communists are good at--flags and national national anthems). But if you want to have a Obama sticker on your car, not my right to complain.

Terry, Terry, Terry
Read the following it only proves my case even more. By the way I have a B.A. from Brown and a J.D. from Georgetown Law. What community college did you go to?

White 38.8%
Black 39.8
Hispanic 15.7
Asian 2.4
other 3.3

To break down these numbers, we look at how many Whites are in the population as a WHOLE. If Blacks make up less 14% of the population and are almost 40% of all receipients, then they represent about 2.5 times their actual population. Since Whites are over 50% of the total US pop., they represent less than their overall piece of the pie, population-wise. Hispanics are at least 15% of the general population, so they take only about as much as what their population represents. Why am I writing this? Because I am tired of the misrepresentations on this issue. I read so many on here claiming that more Whites are on welfare than Blacks (true, in terms of raw numbers), yet not accounting for the fact that there are over 4X as many Whites in this country than Blacks! In statistics, you cannot go by mere numbers. Only if the playing field is exactly equal, which is rarely is! This thread was started, not to be racist, but to keep it real. After all, there are some legitimate reasons for Blacks to be on welfare more than Whites. But the worst thing anyone can do is be in denial

Nevada is not a blue state--it is a Red State with two blue counties--Clark and Washoe--and many of the residents of these two counties aren't from Nevada but transplants. Go up to Elko or Winnemucca or Tonopah and see who they support. It is not even Clark County that is blue, but the Las Vegas Valley. Go to Glendale or Logandale or Moapa or Overton or Blue Diamond. They didn't support Obama. If Nevada could expel Las Vegas and Reno from the state, Nevada would be as red as Utah.

Bush won Nevada in 2000, 2004. Bush in 1988, Reagan twice, Ford, Nixon twice, Ike twice too.

Thanks to the transplants from Cal and the east coast in Vegas, Nevada sometimes goes blue, but it is not usually a blue state. Since WWII, GOP leads 10-6. Nevada does have the idiot from Searchlight, but the other US Senator is from the GOP (from rural Nevada but not a Vegas resident). 2 out of the three House Members from Nevada are from the GOP--Shelley Berkley is the only Democrat, she represents Las vegas of course and a transplant. She is the co-chair of the Taiwan Caucus so perhaps she isn't all bad.

Hide the confederate flags
Jeramy from NY, part of Dr. Adams's point is that UNCW is a public, state university, not a "private institution." You are right, though, that the federal government has no Constitutional or moral business setting employment policies, which also means there is no Constitutional or moral basis for the various federal employment discrimination laws, minimum wage and hours laws, etc., to the extent they apply to private businesses. If I don't like the fact that the Chinese restaurant down the rod obviously hires only persons of Oriental heritage, I may register my disaproval by not patronizing the place and encouraging others to do likewise.

STunned (#14) hits a bullseye
Stunned in NV is right on. Their new Master is welefare, and "progressive sharing of the wealth". The sad thing is that the negros (aka: blacks, etc) WANT to be enslaved, this time by a Nigerian/American whose Nigerian father abandoned him, his caucasion mother raised him, after she married a muslam, who helped raise him, his caucasian (aka: white)grandmparents finished raising him after his mom abandoned him. Give me a break! Barrak Hussein Obama is already showing his true colors. And our enemies know how weak is is. Notice Russia has already announced it will be moving more missles to the boarders to threaten us? What does this pres-elect say? Nothing. He hopes it will go away. God protect us from these fools who are now in power. God forgive those in our country who elected them.

BATTLE FLAG
My favorite of the Confederate flags is the Battle Flag, for its design. Am looking for one to decorate my front door. I love to read and study about the War Between the States. It is not my intent to cause offense to others, I'm just one of those who honors the Confederate heroes who suffered such adversity. I am also weary of hearing non-stop complaints and demands from noisy minority groups, and not just blacks. If people don't like seeing the Confederate flag, turn your eyes away. Millions of us have to put our fingers in our ears when we're forced to hear blaring, crude and hateful rap lyrics, so enduring the sight of the Confederate flag here and there shouldn't be too much of an imposition. Signed, Still Free in Cajunland

The Yankee from MA
"that the cause of the Confederacy was just and righteous...."

It was.

"Plainly, one that had no problem with slavery and with treasonous war against the United States. Folks, get with it--the South became an enemy of the United States and waged war against it. And you conservatives don't have any problem with that."

It was not a war over slavery (secession was caused by slavery in general, the war was not). If the planters had tried to get people in the south to fight for slavery they would have failed. Would you fight for the right of people like Bill Gates to have Gulf Streams? Would people in 1861 fight so the rich could have slaves? A right they could never enjoy? No of course not.

You may note that General Pat Cleburne (the best commander on either side in my opinion)suggested that the slaves should be freed in exchange for service in the Confederate Army--this was January 4, 1864 a time when defeat of the CSA was hardly a foregone conclusion.

I have no problem with treasnous wars against the US especially when the fight was just. The defeat of the CSA has opened the door for waves apon waves of the tyranny by the Federal government on the states and its people. Thinking this was a good outcome is well mindless as I like to say.

I don't have problems with all enemies of the US in the past. And Gastell, many of you liberals have enjoyed the company of much more recent enemies of the US--the Soviet Union, Cuba, North Korea just to name a few.

At least you have the good sense to stay where Yankees should stay--way up north unlike too many of your peers who have infected us down here.

Seeing both sides
After LOTS of reading, I've decided that if the Constitution had been meant to have an escape clause, the Founders would have included one, and that if one state or group of states could pull out whenever an election didn't go their way, North America would eventually have become Balkanized. In short, if I had been around in 1861, I would have been a "Union man."

Nonetheless, I feel, as did U.S. Grant, that men like Lee and Jackson can be honored without going along with the cause for which they fought. Especially if they're your ancestors. And to compare them with the Nazis demonstrates nothing but ignorance.

HOWEVER...I would say to my Southern friends that (1) if you wanted to honor the memories of Lee et al, you never should have let their symbols be appropriated by assorted yahoos like the KKK, and (2) if you insist that the war was not at all about slavery, you need to go back and read the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession. While you're at it, meditate on the reaction of the CSA powers that be when Gen. Patrick Cleburne suggested that slaves should be armed & promised their freedom if they would fight for the COnfederacy.

Adams still writing for Town Hall?
I heard he was kidnapped by feminists and was being held in a trailer somewhere in the Mountains.

The Dean of UNC has been accused of funneling provisions to Adam's captors, but so far no one has been able to verify it.

I've always been partial to the original "stars & bars" (the one that looks kind of like the Betsy Ross flag, but with just 2 red & one white stripe).

In any case I agree with you--if people are offended by your honoring of your CSA ancestors, that's their problem. I get offended when I have a rainbow flag shoved in my face or gangsta rap blasted in my ear, but just let me try and say something about it, I'd be in jail for a hate crime.

jeramy
Were you born stupid or did you have some accident that caused this mental defect.

UNCW is not a private institution, but a public one. The administrator that abused his power is an employee of the state. And since Gitlow v. NY, freedom of speech has been applied to the states and its creations which includes a public university. Punishing the frat for a Confederate symbol was a gross violation of their freedom of speech rights by a government employee and thus unconstitutional.

Secession was over slavery. The war? For the Union it was to preserve the Union. Read Lincoln's letter to Horace Greeley dated August 1862 if you have any doubts on this. For the Rebs? Most who fought were fighting for their homes and family.

I live within two miles of two major battlefields, another is 6 miles away and another only 14 miles away. Within 14 miles of my house, 9,000 people dead. Where my house is today was trampled by 100,000 Union troops there are literally thousands and thousands of minne balls, shells and the like buried all over my neighborhood. And they are still bodies buried around here too--never found when the Corps of Egineers came to dig them up in 1876 for reburial elsewhere. The point of this is if I was here in 1864 and bunch of Yankees were coming through burning and looting their way though my county, I'd be looking for my gun to pick off as many as I could--not about slavery, about protecting my home. And that is what most who fought in the CSA Army were doing.

You had exceptions of course like T.R.R. Cobb who was killed at Fredericksburg, but most were not fighting for slavery or even State Rights.

Shelby Foote had a story that illustrates this point very well. A Confederate private was captured by the Union Army, he was bare foot, thin, in rough shape and poor as dirt--the issue of slavery would have little interest to him. He was asked why are you fighting. He replied "'cause you down here."

Per Liberals: Lets be more like Europe
I lived in Scotland in 92 93 & 94. On Sundays I would read the Sunday Times and I recall reading one morning that in a number of places in Europe the Confederate Battle Flag was being used by separatists movements. I recall the article naming the Basques in Spain and the Slovaks, as at that time it was still Czechoslovakia. So it seems that seeing this flag as a “sign of hate” is peculiar to liberals in the US.

Perhaps our guilt-ridden moonbats
should absolve THEIR guilt with THEIR money and cease trying to force others to pay for THEIR absolution!! Liberals LOVE to spend OPM. That's why they are addicted to hypertaxation.

You would be a Union man if you were in MA, but if you were in Georgia there was little chance you would have supported the Union. Your support depended where you were from.

How do you suggest the flag be should have been taken from the KKK? They have free speech rights too. As far as that goes how about that awful nasty and racist American flag? Guess who uses it at their rallys--everytime? The KKK that's who.

If the framers (not founders) wanted to have an escape clause they would have included one? So I guess the 9th and 10th amendments are null and void huh? You know that the anti-secession clause that Madison wanted in the Constitution was voted down, right? Seems if the framers had wanted the Union to be a prison (which it is now) they would have approved Madison's clause.

The greatest check on Federal tyranny is secession and that was gutted by Lincoln. So now you are simply stuck with it and got to take what they want to dish out.

The claim of sovereign states is simply a joke. The states are no more sovereign than Hunan Province is.

All you Obamabots started screaming it when ever anyone disagree with him and that didn't work either.
Funny, I did not see anyone on here denouncing the not so reverend wright when his hate speech was all over youtube. Where were you then and why was Obambi the ONLY one who threw him under the bus?
Or did you buy the whole "I went there for 20 years but I never heard that kind of talk?
If you did, Maroon would be too smart a inscription for you.

Here is the law from the ACLU web site.

The most basic component of freedom of expression is the right of freedom of speech. The right to freedom of speech allows individuals to express themselves without interference or constraint by the government. The Supreme Court requires the government to provide substantial justification for the interference with the right of free speech where it attempts to regulate the content of the speech. A less stringent test is applied for content-neutral legislation. The Supreme Court has also recognized that the government may prohibit some speech that may cause a breach of the peace or cause violence. The right to free speech includes other mediums of expression that communicate a message.

Akagi
Good points...while I don't buy the "whitewashing" of the whole slavery issue, I respect that most Southerners were fighting for their homes & families.

And Adams' column does address a free speech issue--nowhere in the Constitution are citizens guaranteed the right not to be offended.

I remember the comment that Foote attributes to that humble CSA private. Very similar to one from a New England veteran of the Revolution who, when asked why he fought, said it had nothing to do with the Stamp Act, tea or anything else. He simply answered that "up here, we had always seen to our own affairs, and they meant to take that away from us."

SPEAK UP AMERICA
Thank you for speaking out about FREE SPEECH!
This is still AMERICA after all.
I’m so sick of anything goes if you’re black or gay! You can say whatever you want in any form.
I live in Southern California and there is a gay “pride” parade every year. Well I’m offended by it. You don’t see heterosexual people dancing around ½ naked in the streets proclaiming their straight!!
I don’t want to see it so I stay away.
But we’re talking about a part of American history…the confederate flag, like it or not.

I’m SICK of our freedom of speech being taken away because liberals find it offensive. Conservatives put up with a plethora of crap!
I’m happy to send my $.02 cents worth and I hope people will do it! We need to stand up to this sh@* !!

To compare saying to a professor FU and having a symbol which includes the Confederate Flag on your logo on a banner at Greek event is pure mindless. Okay, smart guy.

The State of North Carolina and many other states issue license plates for the Sons of Confederate Veterans which has their logo which is the real Confederate Battleflag and around the sides the words Sons of Confederate Veterans and the year 1896 forming a square around the flag. Should UNCW ban cars with those plates on campus? Ban those cars from parking at a frat football game? If no? Then what is the difference between the license plates and the frat logo?

Flag history
Thanks to Galltegfa for the link to the flags of the Confederacy.
Even though I grew up in South Carolina, I never saw or heard any discussion of the various flags that were used; I did know that the flag with the St. Andrew's cross was not THE Confederate flag, even though many people think it was.

Trust funds won't see any difference, so people like the Kennedy's will be just fine. Hard-working professionals and small business owners are the people who will get punished. Kerry won the Northeast, Pacific Coast and a few Midwest states. Lost everywhere else.

2000:

Same as 2004, but Gore got New Mexico (it was very close and claims of illegals voting to give him the victory).

1988:

Dukakis didn't even win New England.

1984:

Won a single State

1980:

Only Georgia, Minnesota, a few minor states (Hawai'i and Rhode Island, etc.)

Since 1968, the Dems have won the majority of states three times--1992, 1996, 2008. Is Montana and South Dakota southern?

I also love how you libs keep bringing up Joe the Plumber. He asks BHO a question and Barry responds, "Why, yes, I am a Marxist" and you lemmings go after Joe for daring to ask a question that BHO could have sidestepped. All I saw was reports on how Joe had no plumbing license or about how we was not actually going to buy a business. Where were the reports on BHO "spreading the wealth" so that "everybody wins"? Which Alinsky rule is being adhered to?

Akagi
BTW, I spent the first 32 years of my life in California (for a conservative like me, CA to MA is your basic frying pan into the fire stuff), so I don't really have an ancestral ax to grind.

I had ancestors both North & South.

My relief that the CSA didn't survive is based on a vision of the balkanization of N. America...but yes, it's tempered by the realization that the Federal victory basically killed the concept of a union of sovereign states.

Akagi
Why bother? I agree with you on the whys of Southern secession and definitely agree that the South was right to secede. Lincoln saved the Union and the US would never have been the power that is has been otherwise but he also destroyed our Republic. Joining the US was not intended to be permanently binding; many of the original states would not have voluntarily entered into such an arrangement. JMO51 should read "The Coming Fury" by Bruce Catton and come back when he/she knows something.

JMO51
I don't care how blacks feel about the flag. Don't like it, get your own flag. I don't like the PRC flag either. I have no right to complain if someone wants to fly that.

South Carolina put the flag on top of the state house to commerate the war and it just never got taken down. It was not put up for the same reason Georgia changed its flag in 1956. But some didn't like the compromise even of putting it on the grounds of the capitol as part of a memorial.

Comaring the Nazi flag to the Confederate flag shows me what a complete idiot you are. There is no comparison between the two regimes at all. Is the US flag like the Nazi flag? Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland and Delaware were all slave states, right? Slavery existed under the US much longer that it did under the CSA. It was not a Union General in 1864 calling for all slaves to be freed, it was a Confederate one. The people of the Union were no less racist than those of the South. Lincoln was a racist. The Union troops (mostly) were not fighting to end slavery and were bitterly opposed to turning the war into a war against slavery--e.g. McClellan. Sherman was not against slavery, hated the abolitionists and blamed them most for the cause of the war, but he loved the Union more than he hated them.

If there was any regime that was most unlike the Nazis it was the CSA. Perhaps if the CSA was more like the Nazis they would have done a better job at winning the war.

The weak executive powers of Davis and the power mad governors like Brown hamstrung his ability to run the war. Lincoln had no problems trampling on the Constitution, Davis didn't have that luxury. If Davis had had the powers Hitler had things would have been much better in regards to running the war. But the states had enough of what they saw as Federal tyranny, they weren't going to accept Confederate tyranny in its place.

Akagi
And, at the very end, they did agree to centralized power under Davis. By then it was too late. Really, they misread Lincoln and his resolve. Sherman was essentially right- it was the abolitionists in the North and the fire-eaters in the South that drew the noose tighter and tighter that summer. The North attacked the South for doing what the thirteen colonies had done 90 years earlier.

Akagi
Yeah, come to think of it, wasn't Davis' proposed epitaph for the Conderacy something like "Died of a theory?"

And was it the governor of North Carolina who was a constant thorn in his side, and didn't NC threaten at one point to secede from the CSA? (back to my balknaization hypothesis).

I do know that the government in Richmond was constantly battling with individual states over supplies and such.

Doesn't exactly sound like the Third Reich to me...

Bulldog74 and Big E
It went beyond that. It opened the door for a host of abuses by the Federal government. Lincoln to his credit never meant his actions to set a precedent but that has been the result, from reconstruction to the New Deal and now the Federal government gets to tell states what gasoline they can use and ban the use of types of light bulbs they don't like. The US today is far more tyrantical than the Crown was in 1775. If the founders came back, they would think the Crown was back in charge.

Big E:

Yes, if the South had won, the US would not have been a world power. I guess it depends on your point of view about how good that has been for the US. Lincoln didn't save the Union. He saved the Union at 36 states, but if the 11 had left, Indiana and Maine and the rest weren't going anyplace. The CSA made its constitution to make sure they sure as hell wouldn't be joining them.

If you want to see an awful movie, watch CSA:The Confederate States of America.

The CSA wins, takes over the north, then South America, allies itself with Nazi Germany and then attacks Japan on 12-7, using an atomic bomb on them eventually. Slaves are never freed and slavery is expanded to the north..and on and on.

Produced by a leftists college professor at Kansas (nothiong good has happened there since Bill Quantrill sacked the town back in 1863. It was funded and promoted by that well known anti-white bigot Spike Lee.

Black?
I thought he was half Caucasian? So why is he referred to as Black?

Bulldog
His biggest thorn was one Joseph E. Brown, Governor of Georgia. He saw Davis as a tyrant, didn't allow shoes stored in Georgia warehouses to be transported to shoeless troops of the ANV, didn't let arms in Georgia shipped out of the state, opposed the Confederate draft and on and on.

It was SC that attempted to leave the CSA in the final weeks of the war, but since the capital had been burned to the ground by drunk Union invaders and much of the state was under enemy occupataion, a moot point really by that time.

At the time, the CSA could have indeed used someone like Hitler (only someone that was not insane...better yet could have used a Stalin).

Akagi
Old Abe essentially commandeered the State of Maryland; the state was kept in the Union by force. I suppose that even Abe can fail to see the unintended consequences of his actions. I also think that he would be proud of the present Federal system. I agree that today's govt. is far more tyrranical than King George was; they acknowledge almost no limits on their power. All they have to do is sell it to a crowd of dimwits as "something for the children".

Galltegfa
I'd think UGA is a top tier school. As for some on the list, places like Emory and Vandy and the like are also big time liberal outposts too. Vandy even got the name of Confederate Memorial Hall removed (The United Daughters of the Confederacy sued as they had given the money to build the hall decades before but a judge ruled the school could rename the hall). And the Univeristy of the South has greatly downgraded its connection to the South and the Confederacy and of course Ole Miss has too--the Rebel flag dismissed in 1983 and now Col. Reb is gone (from the sidelines at least, PC run amok--Col. Reb likeness ironically was based on a black man, a guy named Jim Ivy who was also blind).

freedom of speech
As a former prison guard the system is unfair to men that are not black (lol) Blacks make up the vast population in prison because they break the law....and for uneducated southerners that is period end of sentence. North Carolina has not been governed by a republican in years. The State is run and has been run by Liberals for as many years as I can remember. Plus most State employees are black, in most offices in the State. OK Adams been a long time reader I shall send my .02 cents in Confederate money. If you would care to loook go to the State website and find the test that my dog could pass to get a job. As always good article.

That was some comeback. I still see you avoid answering my questions. Funny you rambled on about Blacks and crime and welfare but have no response to the facts. I do consider this a game because it is hard to take you or your arguments seriously. This is a serious blog maybe you should move over to the Huffington Post.

Same thing basically happened to Tennessee. It would have rather stayed in the Union. There were orphan brigades from Tennessee that fought for the Union and of course, Andrew Johnson was the only Senator from a state that left the Union to not resign his seat. Usually the term Orphan brigades refers to Confederate Units from still loyal states (e.g. Missouri, Kentucky). But there were Union Orphan brigades from Tennessee and other pro-Union strong holds in Appalachia like Alabama. There were also units organized out of contraband (runaway and captured slaves)--e.g. 2nd SC Infantry which participated in the raping of Darien, Georgia in 1863.

If the shoe fits
It appears that a large majority of blacks are conceived without the benefit of males. Therefore the term "ho" seems to fit rather than be offensive they are just describing their mothers properly and without ambiguity.
I am sure that during their upbringing there sweet mommie called them "n", nappy headed --- and so on. I have personally heard this and much more at the mall. If my mom did this I would have no hesitation to call her a beach either.
As too the "n" bomb, it seems to be used just to taunt whites like you and I. It is a word that they may use but we cannot, not that I would want to.
Mike, sorry but I think your argument doesn't hold water. The university should spend millions to bring this cultural event to the forefront of our prejudiced minds........

Confederate Southern American
Josephine says: Will there be a place for us, the Confederate Southern American in this obama land? As a descendant of the founders, Jamestown and Mayflower I wonder what will become of us - all the hateful rhetoric from others that post here show they are a product of systemic hatred of the South and our cause in Lincoln's War. Our north eastern government school teaches them this hatred, and the politics of the day reinforce their hatred myths on a daily basis.

The Flag flap in the article is just another one that he NAACP started in the 1990s with their mandate of hatred against our beloved Confederate Battle Flag and all our beloved monuments to our kin and soldiers. Yes, their jhiad has had its affect on the media minded peoples in this Country. The north already hated Southernors before 1861 and they have instilled this hatred in all the generations after. That is why we didn't want to be married to them anymore and still don't. Everything comes out of NYC where all the money went in 1865. FOLLOW THE MONEY

"It is perception, but never the less , those that want this flag respected have made no real attempts to disassociate the use of this flag by the likes of the KKK."

That is 100% untrue.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans have sued hate groups a number of times, but the courts have ruled that the symbol is public domain and SCV has no authority to prevent the KKK and other groups from using the symbol.

William NJ
Still have not answered my questions. Don't try to change the subject and make this about a flag. You raised the questions of blacks, welfare, crack etc.

I have read the Rockefeller statutes (notice how Rockefeller is spelled) they are color blind. I hope you are not going to tell me it is unfair to blacks because of crack. Crack was not around when they were written.

I love how you try to skew the crime statistics with all types of liberal items. Poverty levels, urban population, etc. The bottom line is you are wrong but you won't admit it.

How about some answers to:

Why you care about the bank bailout? You said you like paying taxes

What do you think of Harvard honoring Nazi war dead? After all it's the North's best school.

How do the Rockefeller drug laws significantly change national crime stats?

Why are the Rockefeller laws unfair to blacks?

I look forward to your answers.

scott s.
The SCV has sued to stop racist groups from using the flag and have failed. How do you suggest the SCV stop the misuse of the flag? The KKK has first amendment rights too you know.

The South did leave peacefully. Troops of the United States illegally occupied South Carolina territory, the US illegally tried to re-supply the illegal troops at Sumter (Star of the West, January 1861) but they were driven away when cadets from the Citadel fired on her. Her entry into SC waters without permission was an act of war by the United States. Lincoln was planning yet another re-supply effort.

Anderson was given the demands to surrender and end the illegal occupation, he refused and thus the Confederate forces expelled the foreign hostile troops by force. At that time Lincoln called for 75,000 troops to invade the now independent states at which time four other states left the Union.

I will say it was a mistake to fire on her. Any US ship that attempted to re-supply the fort should have been fired apon to drive them back from the fort and let the troops simply be starved out. Sumter could not have lasted more than a few more days, but that is history as they say.

The Confederacy fired the first shots, but the United States started the war.

How About Some Intelligent Discussion?

For all my Southern friends, the Confederate flag is an insult to black people, a raised middle finger to the North, and a symbol that really needs to be retired. The War of Northern Aggression may aggrieve you to this day, but it was fought over slavery, and it led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of young men who need not have died. It really doesn't matter what it means to YOU, just as the swastika may have a different meaning to a German. What matters IS the perception, and, trust me, this lily-white conservative is gravely insulted by its display, and Southerners do themselves no favor in the eyes of America or the world by clinging to what, rightly or wrongly, is considered a symbol of hatred and racism by the vast majority of Americans.

So, put up all the flags or offensive signs you like, and understand that doing so is protected under the U.S. Constitution. It gives Americans the right to be as obnoxious an stupid as they choose. I have to say that a University President probably has the right to withhold school funds for whatever reason he sees fit, and in this case, his decision was not totally without merit -- you can display all the Johnny Reb banners you like, but don't expect the school to pay for it.

On the grand scheme, this one isn't a blip - you can't call for the banning of the repugnant pro-PLO or Al Qaeda professors one day, and then abjure the banning of a symbol found offensive by so many the next. Hypocrisy doesn't suit you, Mike.

William NJ
So your statistics below show that Blacks and Hispanics commit more crimes than Whites as a % to population. Whats you point. And if Blacks and Hispanics commit more crimes would it not be logical that they would under go more police stops and searches based on statistical history.

Of the crime victims, 40 percent were black, 31 percent were Hispanic, 19 percent were white and 9 percent Asian. Of the suspects identified by victims, 60 percent were black, 28 percent were Hispanic, 8 percent were white and almost 3 percent were Asian. Of those stopped on the street by the police and searched, 49 percent were black, 32 percent were Hispanic, 16 percent were white and 2 percent were Asian. Of those arrested, 55 percent were black, 31 percent Hispanic, 9 percent white and 3 percent Asian.
Care to see if this is inline with the population ?

First Amendment Enforcement
Why not report these facts to FIRE or the ACLU? I am sure they would be interested in slamming the college for this gross violation.

"I agree that today's govt. is far more tyrranical than King George was..."

From the charges portion of the Declaration: "He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance." Sounds like the US today does it not?

Akagi
I was only responding to the assertion that the South has only one top-tier school. I got that list from the US News & World Reports website. I did not factor in politics, and I didn't include DC and MD schools, even though they are south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Had I done so, the list would have included:

Johns-Hopkins
University of MD
Catholic U
American U
Howard
Georgetown

I graduated from a 3rd-tier school, VCU, which has plenty of well-known northern schools ranked behind it. That was in 1980, and there was no shortage of liberal professors on campus then. Lord knows what it's like now.

William NJ
I to grew up in NY at 123 E 82nd Street. I think I know as much about the City has you do.

As far as anger goes I have none. You seem to be angry about the fact that you can't win this argument.

"For all my Southern friends, the Confederate flag is an insult to black people, a raised middle finger to the North, and a symbol that really needs to be retired."

Don't care what it is to blacks or Yankees or anyone else. Okay, deal, retire it as soon as the US flag is as well since slavery existed far more years under it that any Confederate flag. The so-called Confederate flag was designed by and for the Confederate Army and few of them had slaves nor were they fighting for--in most cases--slavery. There is no such thing as THE Confederate flag.

"...but it was fought over slavery, and it led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of young men who need not have died."

It was not fought over slavery, secession was over slavery--the prosecution of war on both sides had little to do with slavery. One of the great ironies of the war. Yes, thousands died that shouldn't have. Perhaps they wouldn't have if Lincoln had simply let the South leave with a friendly goodbye. He could have started this by ending the illegal occupation of SC territory.

MikeONYC Part II
"...it means to YOU, just as the swastika may have a different meaning to a German. What matters IS the perception, and, trust me, this lily-white conservative is gravely insulted by its display, and Southerners do themselves no favor in the eyes of America or the world by clinging to what, rightly or wrongly, is considered a symbol of hatred and racism by the vast majority of Americans."

To compare the Swastika to the Confederate Battleflag proves to me what an idiot you are. There is no comparison at all between the two regimes. Perhaps if Davis had the powers Hitler had the results would have been different. Don't care what insults you, you have no right not to be insulted. Most people in the world have no idea what the flag is. I had an American friend in Taiwan who wore it on his vest and no one knew what it was. He wore it he claimed because the Taiwanese wouldn't know he was an American, but the Americans would.

"I have to say that a University President probably has the right to withhold school funds for whatever reason he sees fit, and in this case, his decision was not totally without merit -- you can display all the Johnny Reb banners you like, but don't expect the school to pay for it."

He did not have the right. Sorry, DA (the d=dumb), but University administrators (it was an administrator, not the president, if you are going to comment at least get the facts right) aren't mini Hitlers who can crush free speech at will.

"On the grand scheme, this one isn't a blip - you can't call for the banning of the repugnant pro-PLO or Al Qaeda professors"

I never called for their bans, have you? Such a good conservative you are. What part of Congress shall make no law don't you understand?

testing, I'm having trouble with my account

This is exactly why the GOP got punked
Please note that Adams column is silent on what support of the Confederate flag means beyond the base Constitutional arguments.

Much has been made of the inherent racism of 96% of blacks voting for Obama. I ask posters, beyond the 1st Amendment argument, what is there in the defense of the flag by members of the right that is not absolutely repellent to blacks as well as large numbers of their fellow citizens?

bryce
I don't care who finds it offensive. I find things offensive too. I find Obama offensive, but can't do much about that can I. I find the PRC flag offensive. I find the KMT offensive.

You don't have the right not to be offended. A few don't like my name as it offends them--tough!

Don't like the so-called Confederate flag, tough get over it. Hey, bryce are you offended by the flag of SC, the Palmetto flag? It is a Confederate flag, adopted offically in 1861. How about the Georgia flag? Almost an exact replica of the Stars and Bars. The Flag of Arkansas? The big star inside the diamond represents the Confederacy. NC state flag? A modification of the Stars and Bars and very similar to the flag it adopted in 1861.

Why do some people support the flag. To some it represents Southern pride, support of a local sports team, saying "I am a redneck." Most rednecks view the term with pride. Few I would say see the flag as a symbol of slavery or even racial discrimination. But you Yankee libs just don't get it, so don't try.

MikeONYC
Re-read the article. There were two frats on a southern campus trying out-southern each other. Neither side was offended. The only person offended was the yankee interloper school bureaucrat. In the same timeframe, according to Adams, the PA was blaring offensive rap lyrics. The point is why is one group allow to offend while another is not?

It's okay with you if one segment of the student body exercises its rights using the N-word on the PA, arguably with the intent of offending others, but not okay if two frats display an image that is intended as a badge of self identity and not intentionally used to offend others?

Some of us are proud of our Southern heritage, warts and all. No one is proud of slavery, but we are proud of our ancestors who fought and died defending the right for the southern states to decide the issue without being dictated to by an overbearing North. And as many have already stated, there were plenty of economic and states' rights issues at play beyond slavery that factored into the decision of the southern states to secede. It was the northern states who saw their meal ticket leaving who brought about the war. The southern states attempted to leave peacefully.

The underlying suggestion in your post is that only southern whites are prejudiced against blacks, but even a casual glance at race relations north of the Mason-Dixon over the last 40 years would prove that suggestion false.

Perhaps it is northerners who have a problem with its southern cousins. Perhaps it's that same mentality that somehow arrives at the conclusion that if we just stop being so American the French and the rest of the world will like us.

Too bad. Some of us don't give a damn what the rest of the world or the North thinks about us.

Bryce
P.s.

The GOP lost because the economy tanked and they blamed GWB and felt McCain had no clue about how to fix things. If Bush had been at 50% instead of 24% we would be talking about President-elect McCain right now.

Please continue with your support Akagi
In fact, as a liberal I would be delighted if this was adopted as a GOP platform plank, a lead campaign issue, the central theme in TV commercials, leaflets, and campaign speeches.

After all, the American public will no doubt recognize the nobility of defending a bunch or treasonous traitors who attacked the US military base at Fort Sumter. After all they weren't Muslims, so that apparently makes it a noble enterprise.

Splendid idea
My check is in the mail. My status as a proprietary small business and anticipating a "retroactive" tax increase, I could use the tax deduction.

The yanks have been raised in an environment of grievance-mongering. Most of them have been taught that the Civil War was over slavery and that the Confederate Battle Flag is a symbol of racism and hatred. This only became an issue a few years back but the usual PC police subjects picked it up and ran with it. Why do you engage with these fact-allergic bloviators? They never answer a question directly... To compare the Flag to the swastika is puerile; the South did not engage in the systematic slaughter of blacks. That is the avocation of Planned Parenthood and Margret Sanger.

Galltegfa
When I was in HS, years ago, UGA used to have these Confederate days, the frats would dress up in Confederate uniforms and the sororities in hoop skirts and the like. Those days are long past. One frat a few years ago which was mostly made up of AG majors had a few stalks of cotton planted in the front yard of their frat house. Someone complained it was racist to have cotton planted in the front yard. Let's see, frat is mostly ag majors, cotton is one of the biggest ag products in the state. If they had 300 acres in cotton would that be racist? Is the ag farm owned by the university in the next county that grows cotton to do research on racist for growing it? Give me a break.

Absolutely correct CVN65
The eradication of blacks was obviously not the intent of the South.

To the South, blacks were valuable PROPERTY.

As usual, you libs do not get it. It is a free speech issue. Perhaps the Dems would like to run on a platform of "you can say whatever you like as long as you agree with us". Spin, spin, spin. The US invaded SC territory by attemting to resupply Doubleday at Sumter.

Offensive Flags
We have a school in So. Calif. where it is forbidden to wear anything to do with the Red White and Blue, no American flag or anything patriotic as that might offend the Muslim and Hispanic children. My Quaker ancestors from Perquimans, Pasquotank, and Guilford Co's NC left the south 1806-1815 because they couldn't tolerate slavery.

The Bill of Rights is being cancelled as Hate Speech, no eminent domain property rights, no rights to a trial in court anymore, guns are dangerous no more guns, what next? Free Speech? what a joke. Welcome to the New World Order.

Citizens of the North and the South have died to protect the United States of America, but we are letting our elected officials ignore protecting our borders, telling us that they can't deport 20 to 30 million Illegal Aliens, and that we must not offend these invaders.

Won't all of you be proud when it will be criminal to display anything about that "has been nation" they use to call the United States, before we joined the New World Order dictator run world government. Welcome to the future. It's heerree.
