Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Author’s Note: Dr. Adams will appear on The Inspiration Channel Saturday night, Nov. 15th at 9:00 pm EST. Tune in to Direct TV, Channel 364. He will speak at Western Michigan University, November 13th, 7 pm.

A few weeks ago, as I was walking across the campus of UNC-Wilmington, I heard an old familiar sound. A rap song was blaring from the general vicinity of the university amphitheater. I heard the n-word broadcast loudly (from over 100 yards away) so I decided to walk over to investigate the source of the racial epithet.

I must confess that I had an ulterior motive for seeking the source of the offensive epithet. The last time I heard an offensive word coming from the amphitheater it was an “Obama 2008” group that was playing profanity-laced rap music. I was hoping they were back so I could ask them to change their music to something other than the tired old songs about bitches, niggas, and hos. Like a crack addict voting for Obama I was hoping for a little change. And, of course, I was hoping for another chance to rib them in the wake of the Reverend Wright scandal.

Regrettably, when I got there, I saw that the source of the music was a university group called “ACE” that sponsors various events on campus – sometimes comedians, sometimes musical artists. So I turned around and walked to the university union to get a cup of coffee. That’s when I ran into Craig (not real name) who is president of the Alpha Epsilon Sigma fraternity (also not real name and, hereafter, referred to as the As).

Craig and I spend a few minutes talking about the latest free speech scandal at UNCW. It all began when the As were playing another fraternity called the Alpha Kappas (also not real name and, hereafter, referred to as the AKs) in an intramural football game. Because the As and AKs were both founded in the South around the time of the Civil War, they occasionally try to “out-Southern” one another. That was the case during their intramural match and that is when the trouble began.

When the As decided to parade around the football field with a banner – an activity taking only a couple of minutes – they gave little thought to the small Confederate Flag that was displayed along with their fraternity crest and fraternity name. Again, lest there be any confusion, the kids were not carrying a Confederate Flag – an activity, which is clearly protected by the First Amendment. They were carrying a large banner a small part of which was covered by a representation of the Confederate Flag.

Regrettably, a lower-level administrator at UNCW decided to reprimand the As for parading around with a “symbol of hatred.” The As were told in no uncertain terms that the Confederate Flag was not protected free speech, presumably because it violates one or more of our university’s unconstitutional (read: illegal) speech codes.

It never really mattered to the constitutionally ignorant UNCW administrator (please pardon any redundancy) that there were no blacks who were present and offended by the “symbol of hatred.” Nor did it matter that no AKs were offended. Nor did it matter that the AKs later offered to write a letter to the university explaining that they were not offended. Nor did it matter that ACE (remember, the group that broadcast the n-word?) was given exactly $60,000 of public funds by the university to be spent on a concert. They used the $60,000 to hire a rapper to call women bitches and hos and to use the n-word. Five years later, no administrator has been punished for promoting racial hatred.

But the As were punished. They were banned from participating in intramural sports for the rest of the academic year. Their student activity fees will go to other groups who use it to broadcast the n-word while they are banned from engaging in certain student activities. This is all happening at a university with a chancellor from New York who is too ethnocentric to understand fully what the Confederate Flag means to Southerners.

Last week, the president of the punished fraternity asked me for a favor. Specifically, he asked that I not publish his name or the name of his fraternity should I decide to write about the Confederate Flag incident. I’ve kept my promise. But I’m still mad as hell. And I’m asking my readers to do one of two things about it:

First, I want everyone reading this column to send a check to the following address:

Office of the Chancellor
Alderman Hall/UNCW
Wilmington, NC 28403

Make the check out for $0.02. Write “Confederate Flag Incident” in the memo line. Then, for tax purposes, ask for a receipt for your contribution to UNCW. This will mean that the university will lose $.40 for every reader participating. By the time you have finished reading this column, I will have sent out 250,000 copies. That means, if all of you participate, the university will lose about $100,000 for their punishment of the fraternity that offended no one but was still punished.

Second, I want those of you who prefer sending cash contributions to send only confederate money. If you can’t get your hands on some artificial Confederate cash then just send a small folded Confederate Flag to our beloved chancellor from New York.

Again, that address is:

Office of the Chancellor
Alderman Hall/UNCW
Wilmington, NC 28403

Part of the reason Craig asked me not to include real names in this column is that he does not want to see anyone fired. But I do want to see the people responsible for punishing the As fired. And I want to see their taillights fading as they head north on I-95 in search of a new job somewhere north of the Mason-Dixon line.

CSA was founded over States' rights
JT, where on earth did you get your degree in American history? That response is one of the most ill-informed, historically inaccurate ones that I have read recently. I honestly thought that the idea that the "Civil War" was all about the issue of slavery in the South had gone the way dodo bird, but I see it is still alive and well.

Do you not realize that slavery was legal insofar as the Federal government was concerned until December of 1865 when the Thirteenth Amendment was passed? The legality of slavery was a matter of State law--not Federal law until Amendment XIII was added to the U.S. Constitution after the war was already over. Do you not realize that the so-called "Slave States" of Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Missouri were all fighting on the side of the Union. As a matter of fact, when the "Civil War" started in 1861, slavery was still legal in Washington, D.C. Are you unaware that the so-called "Free States" freed their slaves through "gradual emancipation" which meant that Northern slaveowners (and there were still many, including Mrs. U.S. Grant)were permitted to keep slaves they had bought until they either died or were emancipated by their masters. This why, for example, the 1860 census still showed slaves in the so-called "Free State" of New Jersey.

HISTORY LESSON FOR JT NEEDED
You and others like you making those statements are the cause of any conflict about our Flag,it does represent our Heritage. You're statements couldn't be further from the truth. You need to upgrade you're History. There are plenty of older books out there on the subject, not the new politically correct ones the media shoves down every ones throats.

RE: Confederate Flag
Okay, I agree that a lot of lyrics to a lot of songs are repulsive and offensive, I would also agree that "speech codes" are asinine and should be disallowed at institutions of higher learning.

However, in my opinion, the Confederate Flag has about as about as inappropriate a statement of free speech as waving a Nazi war banner. The Confederacy was founded to protect slavery and was based on the notion of white supremacy. The Confederates were traitors and they lost the war that they started. Get over it.

Since when is the President Black?
I take exception to your headline. BO is NOT yet the President--and the President of the greatest nation in the world should NEVER carry such a title in the first place! An AMERICAN is what the President is supposed to be--and at best, BO is either British/American or Indonesian/American. If BO makes it to inauguration--he will (I HOPE?) be placing his hand on a BIBLE and swearing to uphold the Constitution of this great land. Will it make him an American? I doubt it. As for the Confederate Flag--I'm a Yankee by birth--but I'd defend to the death the right to display and be proud of a symbol of a person's heritage. Ever been to an African Heritiage Festival of any sort? Any "racist" symbols displayed? Are THOSE people Americans? The term "turnabout is fair play" comes to mind.

Confederate Flag
I sent UNCW a check for $.02 as you mentioned. They have not cashed it and I have not received my donation thank you letter. I'm not surprised.

confederate flags
if you think that the rebel flag is racist, you need a history lesson. and if somebodys racist, thats how they were raised to think, and you cant change what they believe. there are racist people out there, and if you dont like em, dont associate with them

The President is Black Hide the ...
I don't know what kind of "christianity" to which dear Mike thinks he converted but my book says God says "Vengeance is Mine. I will repay." (Deuteronomy 32:35 cited in Romans 12:19) Those who don't forgive others, as with Mike and the UNC become like them, as racist darks* have shown in their blind rejection of McCain. (*=only blind fools look at the color of skin and concoct the deranged notion of "black" or "white" or "yellow" or "red" no child ever sees until they're brainwashed versus the irrefutable scientific and Biblical fact that we are all one race of various shades of melanin brown.) One wonders why he bothers teaching criminology considering this promotion of lawlessness, returning evil for evil in a rage as the God he claims to follow also forbids, Romans 12:17; 1 Thessalonians 5:15; 1 Peter 3:9, and thereby closing off many possible avenues of witness by which he might win them to the Christ he claims to have been won to, for which he will have to give God an account in the Judgment, Jesus saying He will wipe away all our tears because there will be so many to wipe away. Revelation 7:17 & 21:4.

SUCH INTERESTING POSTINGS
Thanx for all the great history lessons on these postings. I love it! As for flying the Confederate flag, I'm looking for the battle flag at the mall for my front door, and I don't give a rusty you know what who doesn't like it! Our family's great, great fought for the Confederacy and most every other Cajun's great, great did also. There's been way too much PC in our country. It's enough already! Signed, Sick of the piled higher and deeper B.S. in this country

Offending
I've a Confederate flag or two myself. As I live in a right-of-center yet mixed race community, and I'm aware that more than one of my neighbors should join those administrators on I-95, I don't fly them on my flag pole with Old Glory. I do have more than a few smaller representations easily visable to the general public, including my very middle class black family next door neighbors. So far, no one protested or hauled me off to court. Goes to show you, where the real world is, people function without being offended. In the world of the elites, being offended is a normal state of affairs. Vive la Differance !

OBAMA WIN = MORE RACIST INCIDENTS
From Christian Science Monitor:

The election of America's first black president has triggered more than 200 hate-related incidents, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center – a record in modern presidential elections. Moreover, the white nationalist movement, bemoaning an election that confirmed voters' comfort with a multiracial demography, expects Mr. Obama's election to be a potent recruiting tool – one that watchdog groups warn could give new impetus to a mostly defanged fringe element.

Most election-related threats have so far been little more than juvenile pranks. But the political marginalization of certain Southern whites, economic distress in rural areas, and a White House occupant who symbolizes a multiethnic United States could combine to produce a backlash against what some have heralded as the dawn of a postracial America. In some parts of the South, there's even talk of secession.

"Most of this movement is not violent, but there is a substantive underbelly that is violent and does try to make a bridge to people who feel disenfranchised," says Brian Levin of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino. "The question is: Will this swirl become a tornado or just an ill wind? We're not there yet, but there's dust on the horizon, a swirling of wind, and the atmospherics are getting put together for [conflict]."

Swampfox
Oh, you're welcome.

This is not an article about Prop 8...hmmm. But it is really nice to see here you anyway.

Well, it just goes to show, when it comes to history, you know about p*ssing in a bucket.

Just messing with you! ;)

HONOR THE FALLEN
Those of us who fly the Confederate flag are not flaunting it. Most of us are honoring the brave soldiers who died or were maimed. Some of these are our relatives. We are also honoring our beloved Southern heritage. When we go to cemeteries and visit Confederate graves we feel proud of their efforts. If you don't love the South then you won't understand. It's a love of tradition. Flying the flag does not say we approve of slavery. Dissenters don't understand cause they lack the Southern soul. We just finished with All Saints' Day here in Louisiana where the graves are all tended, and blessed by the priests. I see a lot of Confederate graves on those days and honor them. Signed, In love with the South

Good story Yttrium
I am reminded of the fact that New Orleans was captured early in the war and put under the thumb of Union General Butler. Well the residents had there bit of fun with the General. They had Butler's image put on the inside bottom of their chamber pots..........so that when nature called.....you get the picture.

Outsouthern this, III
The effect was, to give the impression that the whole house was thus paying homage to the American flag; and, what was a more significant fact still, the old flag was greeted by the passing crowd with vociferous applause. So much for the firmness of a loyal-hearted, true American woman.

--The Pictorial Book of Anecdotes and Incidents of the War of the Rebellion...Beautifully Illustrated with over 300 Engravings. Des Moines, Iowa: W.E. Bliss & Co., 1884.

Outsouthern this, II
But the captain's disposition to yield was not seconded, amicably nor otherwise, by his better half. The proprietors thereupon next proposed to vacate the best chamber in her favor, and in some other part of the house, if that would be satisfactory; but the lady's "No!" was still as peremptory as ever. Her point was gained, and the St Charles was doomed to have a dark front chamber.

Pleased with htis triumph, Mrs. ----- devised the following manoeuverto make the most of her victory.

Summoning a servant, she sent him out to procure for her an American flag, which, at dusk, she suspended from her window. When evening came, the streets, animated by a merry throng, were illuminated, but, alas! the St Charles was disfigured by its sombre chamber--

when suddenly, a succession of lamps, suspended on both sides of the flag, revealing the STARS and Stripes, were lit up, and the ensign of the Union waved from the centre of a hotel illuminated in honor of its overthrow!

Outsouthern this
My heart goes out to the dueling football teams, more than anything else, so I would like to offer something better than two cents for their war efforts.

What could be more southern than a secession within a secession?

I transcribe:

A finely independent and successful stand was taken by a woman in New Orleans, on behalf of the Union, in the dawning days of rebellion. She and her husband, a Mississippi steamboat captain, occupied the middle front room of the lowest range of sleeping apartments in the St Charles Hotel, at the time when the city was to be illumitnated in honor of secession. She refused to allow the illumiating candles to be fixed in the windows of her room, and the proprietors remonstrated in vain--she finally ordering them to leave the room, of which she claimed, while its occupant, to have the entire control.

The secessionists...proceeded to find and appeal to the captain, who was not in the room at the time of the above proceedings. He heard their case; ...he said he would go with them to the room, and see if the matter could be amicably arranged.

Slavery
............I am gay. I see so many times on Townhall when the discussion turns to the gay issue many people fall back on the old fallacy that the Roman Empire fell because of the rise of immorality and homosexuality. The fact is that the Roman Empire was founded on human slavery and the glory of battle.

To Amy
The Confederacy only lasted for four years. Slavery existed under the flag of the United States from 1789 to 1865. Slavery was established in the colonies by the British. I am not condoning slavery by defending the Confederate flag. I am just defending the fact that the southern states did have a right to peacefully leave the Union that they entered when the United States Constitution was ratified. Lincoln thought otherwise. I guess that my feelings on the issue is not PC.

Amen
Mr. Adams.

Blacks and equality
I find it interesting that blacks voted 97% in favor of their black candidate, many simply on the basis of his skin color, yet 80% of black voters in California voted against gay marriage.

Apparently, they want "equality" for themselves, but they don't think gays should have the same privilege.

Hypocritical? Seems like it to me.

Why Obama can't help blacks
African-Americans have to help themselves. They cannot continue to rely on Big Brother (government) for handouts and just about everything else. There needs to be a culture of change as well in the black community, which addresses the high rate of single parent homes (absent dads), high dropout rates (fewer high school or college graduates), high crime/arrest rates, high drug use, etc, etc. They cannot continue to view themselves as merely victims of racism anymore. One of the few positive things that the Obama win has shown is that Americans have moved beyond race based bias. This country is willing to give minorities and just about everyone a chance to succeed (look at Asians) - but you have to stop looking at yourself as a victim and stop looking towards the government to be the main rescuer of your community. Look within first.

UNCW Confederate Flag
Mike,
You are quite creative in getting the message across to UNCW. I will be sending my check AND flag, though I will not hold my breath for that tax receipt. This kind of thing makes me sick...my sympathy to the fraternies involved but hope it doesn't take away their pursuit of remembering their Southern heritage. Being a proud member of the UDC and my husband SCV, we know a little about that. Politcal correctness will never take away pride in our Confederate ancestors. Thank goodness for others like you.

WOW
I am utterly shocked that someone would actually write this garbage. The title is an insult by itself. To call the chancellor ethnocentric, is just short of calling him black. Unbelievable that he is pissed about a rap song playing, but doesn't understand why someone is upset about the confederate flag. It saddens me. Even with the historical moment we just had, we are still dealing with this BS. I live in the south, and when I see the confederate flag I know that there is some deep rooted hatred in the owner's eyes.

Symbol of Oppression
I agree, Vince. the Confederate flag is a symbol of treason. For a lot of people, it is a symbol of oppression. Someone on this blog said it is unfair to compare the Nazi flag to the Confederate flag, because millions were murdered under the Nazi regime, but not under the confederate regime. Slaves were hung, burned, raped, tortured and whipped and worse of all, sold like cattle. I don't know about you, but I'd rather be dead than be a slave to anyone. This article is a travesty and an insult to all who suffered under slavery and their descendents.

Great article Mr. Adams
A sad but humorous illustration about liberals and diversity. We pay fortunes to have holy symbols of Christ plunged in urine and bullwhips photographed in an anus, but God forbid if someone fly a flag. Someone at that N.C. university needs to head back to N.Y.

Now that liberals have the hypocricy part down pat, perhaps their dictionary can make it all the way down to "d" as in diversity.

"Is picking your battles. Whatever the merits of 1st Amendment argument, does the GOP really want to tie itself to defense of what is for the majority of Americans a symbol of racial oppression and treason against the US?"

All for freedom of “politically correct speech” aren’t you? Or should we say “politically corrected” speech?

"google" "flu"
Search for "flu" Big brother is watching us and tracking us. If we all push back against these creeps, the data they collect will be worthless.

Long Live the South!
Most Northerners don't understand the South and they never will if Southerners get intimidated by ignorant stunts like the one outlined in this article. Fight back my brothers! For too long liberals have dominated Education and gotten away with crap like this. If conservatives want to win back ground, they need to get into this field as well. That's why myself and others like me have decided to get into teaching ourselves. You won't find liberal indoctrination, multiculturalism, or political correctness in our classrooms - but we need the support of conservative parents to back our ideals against liberal administrations and the thugs in the teacher unions. Are you with us?

Rebel flag
Isn't the Confederate flag a symbol of treason against this nation?

Reply to Gestell . . .

It is very revealing that you, and MikeONYC, avoid addressing the CENTRAL issue of Mr. Adams' article, which is, OBVIOUSLY, the double-standard of what constitutes free speech and free expression on many college campuses.
Contrary to your assumption, I am NOT a southerner. My parents were southerners, from Louisiana. I was born and raised in liberal Northern California. I am, in fact, a former Trotskyist. I participated in civil rights demonstrations, IN the South, when I was only a teenager.
Martin Luther King himself was a registered Republican. Why? Because the old Democratic Party of the South was once dominated by segregationist Democrats. On my mother's side, I am a direct descendant of William Clark, of "Lewis and Clark". My ancestors fought on BOTH sides in the Civil War. Some of them fought to FREE slaves. You clearly have a different definition of "conservative" than I do. The racists of the KKK are NOT conservatives. They are REACTIONARIES. Do you understand the distinction? Conservatives are not inherently opposed to change. They simply understand that "change" does not necessarily mean "better". Change needs to be done with caution and calm deliberation. I know, from personal experience, that a fair number of those whites who participated in the Civil Rights Movement were deeply RELIGIOUS people . . . with strong family, and conservative, values. Just because some people may view FEDERAL intervention as a moral good, that does NOT mean that Federal intervention is always Constitutional.

bryce1
You didn’t answer my question:
I asked what were Condi and Colin presented to the world as?

To freshen your memory, you said:
"Thankfully, with the election of President the world will routinely be presented with a picture of black America absent the narrow-minded stereotypes you and your ilk embrace. "

The "narrow-minded stereotypes" came from your side.
Again how were they presented to the world?

No Will
Will is conspicuous by his absence. Where could he be? Down at his neighborhood gaybar or bathhouse? It is rare for him not to jump right on here and penetrate the discussion with his homosexual ranting. Come out, come out wherever you are, Will. Perhaps he's in the street outside a Mormon temple with the other homos squealing about how his 'rights' have been violated. Hope he didn't get locked up.

The "president" (note the quote marks)
... is black AND a Marxist. Hide the Confederate flag? No way! It should be waved as proudly as it did in the halcyon days of 1861 and 1862...

Great Article Mike
Like an untiring hammer or like an incessant dripping of water, Mike relentlessly attacks. keep it up Mike. Of course liberals believe that Mike is a blowhard, Anne. So what.

Barack's Familial Connections
Barack shouldn't have any beef, his Dunham ancestors were Confederates. Besides, if you think the Confederates fought to perpeutate that peculiar institution, then you are eaten up with stupid. My ancestors had their property stolen and burned, among other things, and then endured the Reconstruction (no Marshall Plan) after having fought for their homeland and limited government.

Anyway Happy Veteran's Day, a belated Happy Birthday to my beloved Marine Corps (233 years of tradition unmarred by progress).

As for MikeONYC I spent twenty-one years as an active duty/reserve Marine Officer. Yes I am an American, but I don't have to forsake my heritage (which includes the American Revolutionary War)so you can take your crap and repatriate it.

Will the "HOMO"
You my friend will burn in hell, enjoy it though, the road to hell is paved with the best intentions.

Cheers;

Right on, Mike!
Definitely within my budget. I'll use the CHANGE Obama leaves me after he takes my money to give to someone that didn't earn it.

That faker will NEVER be MY President. EVER.

Part II
I'll say it again... I am a true Conservative - I don't want government in my face. I don't want schools funding anything except teachers in the classrooms, or limiting speech or expression. And that is perfectly consistent with saying the school had every right to do what it did, and I personally applaud them for it. They should stop funding all frats, groups and other crap that has nothing to do with getting a useful education. If you need to let your southern pride flag fly, do it with your own money and on your own time.

I hope one of these days New York bans all their stupid ethnic and gay pride parades that cost the city so much cash. The one (and maybe only) thing Obama has totally right is that there is - or at least should be - only ONE America. It's time y'all got with it, and dumped this proud to be a Southerner crap, and join the Union.

Confederate Flag
Isnt that flag really a symbol of treason against our nation?

you got it wrong!
Don't hide the confederate flag because Obama is the president-elect. Hide it because it is an embarrassment and makes you look like bigoted, toothless rednecks. All the confederate flag symbolizes is the belief that the State's had the right to force another culture into servitude. It represents the futile fight to preserve tyranny. Join the 21st century!!!

Excellent idea
I put the stamp on my envelope and am mailing my 2 cents today! Only thing I disagree with you on this would still be outrageous even is someone claimed that they were offended. No one has the right not to be offended in this country. If they were, a history lesson would be in order!

Hey Yanks
It's been almost 150 years since we got mad.

And this time we're better armed!

What this is about
Is picking your battles. Whatever the merits of 1st Amendment argument, does the GOP really want to tie itself to defense of what is for the majority of Americans a symbol of racial oppression and treason against the US?

reply to Myk
You write: "Much of the "Liberal"/Left act as if NOTHING has changed for the better, or that the South has not changed at all . . . an assumption which is manifest nonsense."

As a liberal, I agree with you that much has changed for the better in the South. Why did this happen? Well, it took the power of the liberal state--exercised by means of a number of Supreme Court decisions, a few executive actions, and a host of laws--to get you Southerners to stop exercising what you imagine were your constitutional rights to run little racist empires otherwise known as Southern states. Ultimately, as in virtually all really serious political conflicts, the side with greater power won. Fortunately, this victory was for liberal principles, which you as a conservative defender of the South cannot embrace or endorse.

American conservatives have been told by their own intellectuals--people like Richard Weaver, Mel Bradford, and the Southern Agrarrians--that the traditional South is the best example of genuine conservatism. I agree with that assessment, which, for a liberal, is also abundant reason to reject conservatism and all its stands for.

the power of our example
Already showing in Africa, They are saying if America ca set aside tribalism, maybe we ca, too.

HOW ABSURD! HOW APPROPRIATE!!
What a great idea! I sent mine with a self addressed stamped envelope, just to emphasize the receipt. I am the VP/Treasurer of a national Motorcycle Club. I sent a two cent donation from my MC chapter as well. My wife is sending a two cent donation today.

Will it help stop this insane socialist and political correctness indoctrination of our kids, or help hold these liberal whiners accountable for what they do to other people? No. But it does shine a brighter light on their actions, and if there actually are thousands of two cent donations costing the school thousands of dollars, someone has to answer for it.

The real issue is getting parents to care enough to place their kids in a school where real education is the issue, not a socialist indoctrination. The ultra liberal schools will either change or close.

With the liberals at the helm and obama their puppet, assaults on our freedoms are likely to become even more prevalent. I may send another donation Wednesday when I get paid.

This is a stupid idea
While I agree 100% that what the chancellor has done is wrong and that action needs to be taken, I'll remind you that UNCW is a publicly funded university and that me and you will eventually foot the bill. I also think that trying to harm the chancellor and the university is counter productive. Wouldn't that money be better spent on hiring an attorney to help address this matter. Nor do I agree with financially punishing the university, which sole purpose is to educate people. Thomas Jefferson said,"Information is the currency of democracy". Education is merely the exchanging of information.

The Truth of The Matter.....
This is NOT about the Confederate flag or slavery, or racism. This is about a university employee making a mountain out of a mole hill, and then her superiors covering her actions and justifying a way to punish this fraternity.

These guys were not flying a flag in protest. Weren't trying to make a point. Weren't trying to intimidate or reduce anyone with the confederate flag. They were celebrating by running around with a flag which was crafted with the fraternity letters, the UNCW flag, and small confederate flag, all woven together to create one flag. No big deal.

That is until some PC lower level employee decided to make it a big deal. She made a beeline across a football field, singled these guys out in front of everyone, then declared she would "not tolerate this display of a symbol of hate". She then proceeded to publicly reprimand these guys, and threaten to take this to the top.

So, the fraternity President is called into the intramural office to discuss the "incident" the next week. Lo and behold the whole thing disappeared. Like it had never happened. The "official" report reprimands the fraternity for "unsportsmanlike conduct" for taunting, and never even mentions the Confederate flag. Yet, they found a way to create a scenario in which they could suspend the fraternity from all intramural activity.

This is fairly simple. These guys did NOTHING wrong. They were publicly humiliated by an employee of the university and their reputations tarnished. And, instead of reprimanding the employee who went overboard, they have covered up the whole incident to protect her and the university, and are stonewalling all requests for legally required information.

A bit of trivia...
Here's a bit of trivia that apparently Dr. Adams, and pretty much everyone on this site, isn't aware of:

The "Stars and Bars" is NOT -- I repeat NOT -- the "Confederate Flag".

At least the "Stars and Bars" isn't the Confederate Flag any more than the US Army Flag is the United States flag.

The "Stars and Bars" was the Confederate ARMY flag, NOT the flag of the Confederacy itself.

It may also interest some to know that the Commander of the Confederate Army -- General Robert E. Lee -- was himself ANTI-slavery, and he had, in fact, freed his own family's slaves.

But none of that matters. Idiot America-hating fascist left wingers still will repeat all kinds of lies because an honest assessment of the truth would lead any rational, intelligent person to the conclusion that the only racists out there are the ones in the Democratic Party.

I put my 2 cents in
the mail.

To Big Daddy
There was no rebellion in Germany that put in place the Nazi Party. They were elected into power. Under the Nazi flag great atrocities were committed 6 million Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals and others were systematically murdered. The southern states thought they had the legal right to leave the union that they had just joined around some 80 years before. There was no systematic mass murder instituted as the Nazi has with "The Final Solution". Slavery existed longer in the United States under the flag of the United States than it did under any flag of the Confederacy. Please note, that R. E. Lee released all of his slaves during the war as per his father-in-law's will. Lee had inherited them from his father-iin-law.

But jagrmeister721 says it correctly. You have your endless petty battles with petty bureaucrats over petty issues while the house has burned down around you."

You are incorrect. Go and hear his talk about the Constitutional Crisis in Education. These are not petty battles, but battles for the First Amendment rights of students who do not fit the liberal mold of political correctness. They are afraid of opposition on campuses and suppress opposing views. I have seen it first hand since the 60s.

When we can get our message out, we can capture the minds of those who have been sheltered and/or bullied by the liberal professors and establishment. Speech codes must go, everywhere - the Constitution guarantees your right to be offended.

We can't let them rewrite history and distort the meaning of the American experience. These schools graduate economic and historical illiterates. (I offer the recent vote as evidence.) For public schoold, we have the courts. For private schools, we have only the two-cent method of sending a message where it hurts, in addition to contacting potential donors.

It starts early:

There is a liberal template out there:
ALL conservatives are racists, sexists, bigots, homophobes, reactionary, closed minded, angry, uneducated and just plain dumb.

ALL libtards are enlightened, loving, caring, sensitive, creative, artistic, visionary, super intelligent, inclusive, and progressive.

EVERYTHING they see, say and think is fitted into the template. ANYTHING that doesn't fit the template is denied, hidden or just plain ignored.

When Bush 41 and Bush 43 actually APPOINTED black people to high posts or nominated to the high court it either got ignore or the Left started with the racist caricatures of them as "toms" or "traitors" or "ho's". Do you recall the grotesque cartoons of Condi Rice that appeared almost as soon as she became Sec State?

By the way Kindell
Were you aware that black women are the only demographic whose non-marital birth rate has remained stable for over a decade.

By contrast the Native American rate has doubled in that period, and the non-Hispanic white rate has increased 20%.

Actually Kindell
The characteristics and biography you highlite are central to Obama's success. As a self identified black man who has a white mother, and was raised away from the racial animus of mainland America by white grandparents, he was the perfect bridge for a new construct or rather deconstruction of race.

Mr. Adams,
petty bureaucrats are the same the world over.
But jagrmeister721 says it correctly. You have your endless petty battles with petty bureaucrats over petty issues while the house has burned down around you.

We have to change
Look, we can fight these petty battles, all we want and then act surprised when we get thrown out of office. Why? We are fighting over the conferederate flag at a college game. The opposition is talking about affordable health care. We can be the party that stands up for "confederate flags" or we can do the hard work of winning over minorities, especially hispanics; minorities will make up over 30% of the 2012 vote. So we have to choose.

Observation of fact vs stereotype
"with the election of President the world will routinely be presented with a picture of black America absent the narrow-minded stereotypes you and your ilk embrace".

This president-elect who is half black of recent Kenyan heritage and no family history of slavery except possibly as slavers in Kenya, raised in middle class comfort by his white mother and grandparents and who coasted into top Ivy league schools with help, now married with two children is completely UNrepresentative of blacks in America. He is an exception to the typical black experience which is statistically much more likely to incorporate elements of illegitimacy, poverty and crime.

The only thing Obama has in common with American blacks is growing up without his birth father who deserted his infant son and had other offspring with several "baby mothers" (polygamous marriage in the case of Obama sr.)

70% of black children are now born to single mothers. This is not a "narrow stereotype" but representative of the majority. It is such an unpalatable fact to Liberals whose Welfare agendas have caused the destruction of the black family, that they now go around substituting an idealized image of black life in the United States.

Simultaneously, they have the nerve to criticize truth tellers and talk patronizingly about stereotypes through their hats.

Xpressit
Throw in Michael Steele and JC Watts and you have pretty much the full inventory of blacks the conservative press and many of its' adherents present positively.

Bryce1
The quote regarding the vice-President of the Confederacy can be attributed to ....Abraham Lincoln as well.
That's right. Abraham Lincoln is on record stating that Blacks would never be equal to whites early on in his poitical career. He failed then to voice any great opposition to slavery.
As I say, context is everything.
Now did Lincoln have an epiphany? Or did political circumstances lead to his enlightenment? During the war Lincoln also suspended Habeus Corpus and jailed without trial anyone that he felt was a threat to his position on the war. One of those dissenters was the grandson of Francis Scott key, the author of our national Anthem. Lincoln also discussed a plan to return Blacks to Africa after the war. The point: Context is everything.
Understanding the mores of the time and to realize that the victor writes the history.
The "progressives" of today attack American history and the founders. Many school books have a revised, PC version so as not to offend.
History however is objective and should be approached that way. We learn from it.
There are those who attack george washington because he owned slaves and push to have his name removed from buildings and schools. Where will it end? No country has a perfect history free of predjudice. I submit that none matches our willingness to right wrongs and to be accepting of all.

Thankfully -- Bryce 1
"Thankfully, with the election of President the world will routinely be presented with a picture of black America absent the narrow-minded stereotypes you and your ilk embrace."

Gee…that’s odd. How was America represented with countless others, Condi Rice for one, and Colin Powell for another? Well, you may have a point, if they’d have listened to leftist malcontents, and the depictions of both of them by liberals they might have been confused.
........
..now as I was saying before, it never ends.

Good Mike: Another saga in the never-ending double standards of the left, and the more edukated the worse it gets. It doesn't end, as serious as it is. At least they supply humor even if humor-challenged themselves.

That was the point of my original post to this article, namely that this protection of a symbol which is repellent to so many in the name of free speech only adds to the negative impressions of the GOP.

But as I also said, it was would be a dream fullfilled for this liberal if more conservatives would join this fight and in fact make it a central plank of the next platform.

Akagi . . . a question . . .

For the record, I am all for de-centralized limited government, and states' rights . . . within the sphere of their own state affairs. I am NOT even opposed to the IDEA of secession . . . under specific and morally-justifiable circumstances. I don't believe in coerced "unity" . . . just for the sake of unity. However, in the real world . . . with all the myriad social issues we must confront -- local, regional and international -- and the extreme dogmatism and polarization of ideological attitudes on BOTH sides of the political spectrum . . . it is reasonable to ask how FAR can the IDEA of secession be carried before it descends into insanity?
All across the world, we are seeing national, political and social dismemberments taking place on an increasingly smaller geographical scale . . . as even small minorities with a social grievance try to form their own independent state. Where does it stop? If we accept the principle that states have a right to secede, do COUNTIES then have a right to secede from states? Do CITIES have a right to secede from counties?
I am NOT disagreeing with your basic argument. I am simply raising the question of how FAR can the alleged right of secession be carried into increasingly smaller "tribal" units? Even though I understand the motivations and feelings of those who fought bravely for the Confederacy, I can't help thinking that, if the South had separated successfully, that separation would have, in time, proven to be a disaster for both the U.S.A. AND the C.S.A. . . . . because of future INTERNATIONAL challenges that BOTH would have had to deal with.

Carlos
I don't deny that black on black crime is a crisis, but your statement that more blacks are raped and murdered by fellow blacks today than by southerners in the past is a throw-away line with no presentation of empirical fact to back it, and therefore hardly worthy of comment.

Further, in the many posts you have offered regarding race you invariably present blacks as pathologically violent, incompetent, and a drag on society.

Thankfully, with the election of President the world will routinely be presented with a picture of black America absent the narrow-minded stereotypes you and your ilk embrace.

200 years

and the government worshiping northern tyrants are still pounding us on the head with their self perceived moral superiority. Nothing new here.

Their selective outrage depends on WHO is offended. Offend white males, non graveling southerners, conservative women or blacks, Christians (right wing lunatic fringe theocracy types), republicans, rich people (not the hellywood types)all you want. It shows your enlightenment.

But that Confederate flag may permanently damage someone's wittle peelings. It forever burns that Evil image of oppression on the brains of folks who never suffered such a fate.

Boo firigen hoo!

I thought college was for grown ups.

Akagi, the difference between the flags
is that the Confederate flag (stars & bars) represents a failed rebellion. The US flag does not. The Confederate flag is on par with the Nazi flag, also a failed rebellion and illegal to fly in Germany.

However, this is the US of A and if someone wants to fly the s&b or the Nazi flag for that matter, let'em have at it. They just paint themselves a different color that might not appeal to everyone, but it is their right.

BTW, Happy Birthday and Semper Fi to my fellow Jarheads!

Akagi 6:17 pm post
Hawaii's Sen. Daniel Akaka (Senate Bill 310 and House Bill 505 2007) co-authored by Senator Norman Coleman of Minnesota is the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act, sponsored by Sen. Daniel Akaka. This Bill establishes a new government for descendants of Native Hawaiians. This race-based sovereignty is first cousin to a revolution against the United States.

Senator Akaka has been pushing this for ten years.

On Feb 28, 2005, Michelle Malkin had an article in the Washington Post entitled "Hawaii's Secessionists".

here is the issue
It is about political correctness. The Confederate flag was not meant as a pure symbol of race hatred. It was a symbol of those who wanted to pull out of the Republic. Remember, the U.S. Flag Supported slavery for nearly 90 years. Arguably, it supported "separate but equal" for 60 years.

The confederate flag issue is much more complicated than it is made out to be. There are blacks who are members of Confederate organizations (as thousands of blacks did fight for the confederacy) and whites who are in organizations related to the GAR.

MikeONYC
You will find out very quickly that most conservative posters here really don't give a roaring rat's a** about your accomplishments. Many of us are well educated, literate, and accomplished as well.

I wonder if the moron that wrote this article gets it.
What purpose does it serve to have the confederate flag on campus.I don't get why conservative want to defend, and stand up for a flag that represent nothing good. No wonder why we can't attrack minorities.

That's Pretty Lame
Mike, calling me an idiot is pretty lame. I simply point out that what matters is how people perceive the symbol, and that those who decry any protest of its display may be right under the Constitution, but are sadly wrong in the court of public opinion and decency. It is dogmatic pedants like you that have debased Conservatism and the Republican party, and led many reasonable and intelligent (yes, I actually write a national print column, have two Ivy degrees and am close to a third, and had a long and successful career in the business world - so calling me an idiot for pointing out the semiotic value of offensive symbols is just a tad thin, my friend)people to abandon us for the party of Obama.

The purpose of higher education is to lift our spirits and our standards. Toting the Confederate flag around serves no positive purpose. Grow up.

SYMBOLS--DEPENDS ON YOUR POINT OF VIEW
Dear All,

I was working at a private girls school teaching when one day I happened to wear one of my baseball caps with a small American Flag on it.

The middle school administrator called me in her office and told me that it was not a good idea to wear it if I wanted a good review in my upcoming yearly review. WHY?

She informed me that the flag was "..a charged symbol..." I asked what she meant and she told me that it was a symbol of repression to some and would offend them.

I could not believe it. I was basically told to stop displaying my point of view for fear it would offend others.

THIS IS THE CREEPING FASCISM THAT IS BECOMING MAINSTREAM. IT WAS BRED IN THE COLLEGES AND HAS TRICKLED DOWN ALL THE WAY TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

But you still didn't respond to my 2nd point about how rural America is condescended to and ridiculed by big city people, but they are the backbone of the nation. And I get yr point about generators needing fuel, but I stand on my belief that country people will survive, with or without a distribution system, (or generators.) Yes some did as they saw their resistance to the Federal government on civil rights as the same spirit as those that resisted Federal forces in the 1860s, but you are wrong that the flag was moving toward the history books.

The symbol is part of the SCV's logo, it was added to the Mississippi state flag in the 1890's, it was widely displayed in the 1940s and 1950s in the South as a symbol of Southern pride. The colors were carried by units in WWII, etc.

Yes to all yr questions. It's very common for Cajuns to have generators. I live on the Bayou, have a well, septic, etc. Even an outhouse! My thoughts not about dead soldiers
But rather contemporary supporters of the Confederacy whose own VP clearly articulates the foundation of the Confederacy as the defense of slavery.

Bryce-You're a Yankee
To answer your question: "I ask posters, beyond the 1st Amendment argument, what is there in the defense of the flag by members of the right that is not absolutely repellent to blacks as well as large numbers of their fellow citizens?"

You wouldn't understand because you're a Yankee, not a Southerner. But, I'll try. The Confederate flag became a symbol of the Confederacy. Just as the American flag is a symbol of the United States. Southerners have a deep and abiding love for the South. Our ancestors fought and died on our land. They bravely defended the South against Northern agression. Our ancestors fought sometimes in rags against overwhelming odds to defend their homes. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten by Southerners. We revere our generals - Lee, Jackson, Longstreet, Stuart, etc. They were among the finest, most respectable and most capable men ever to command troops in battle. Their character and integrity was superior. General Lee was one of the finest men ever to have lived. Dishonoring of the Confederate flag is an attempt to dishonor the sacrifice of Southern soldiers. If honoring the spilled blood of millions of Southerners is "absolutely repellent" to blacks, which I doubt it is, then I respectfuly say their position is absolutely repellent to me.

Bryce
Let me explain it so even someone as stupid as you will understand.

As of December 20, 1860 South Carolina was no longer part of the United States, It and its territorial waters belonged to the independent country of South Carolina and in February of 1861 it joined the CSA, so at the time Sumter was ordered relinguished by the US forces occupying it, it was Confederate territory, not US territory and the US had no more rightful claims to Sumter than the US has claims on I don't know...the airbase at Lingshui, Hainan Island.

The nearest big box store to me is 8 miles, the nearest fast food and grocery store, over 2 miles. Nothing within walking distance to me but cow and horse farms and some other neighborhoods.

Let's fast forward...
About 100 years. It seems that the Confederate flag was going to be relegated to the history books until the Civil Rights Movement came about. Suddenly, interest in the Confederate flag increased, and Georgia even incorporated it into the state flag. The association of the Confederate flag with racism did not occur during the 1860's - it was the Civil Rights Movement and the 1960's that saw many segregationists identify themselves with the Confederate flag.

We earned our own way back, without the gummints hep.

Since my great Grandfather was born in 1855, and was 10 when his family lost everything doest this mean we still "owe"??? Isn't a few trillion since 1964 (99 years AFTER) covering the debt???

My parents didn't use the "N-word" when I was growing up, nor do I use the "N-word" as I raise my children (yes, some of us actually do raise our own children). My children hear the "N-word" in junior high by those who "claim to be offended" by its use. My children experience racism by those same "offenders" too.

I was informed today by Mike S. Adams of an occurrence that is offensive to me. If I have any misunderstanding instead of a clear understanding, please do correct me.

If I understand correctly, based on the integrity of Mike's report, I would be proud of you for providing a remedy with your integrity for the insult to your students and mature faculty members. When you received your degree, I'm sure you were not taught as you now teach. Consider your personal history as well as the legacy you leave for others.

Responsibility for the results of that time together should be regarded as integral with your duties as Chancellor—as I'm sure you must agree.

I am enclosing a small but necessary contribution to the esteemed University in memory of the incident and your lack of mature judgment. In acknowledgment of my thoughtful contribution to UNCW—for my personal tax purposes—please send a receipt to my attention at the address below.

From the Confederate VP Inaugural speech
"Its' foundations are laid, its' cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man, that slavery is his natural and normal condition."

Alexander Stevens, Vice-President of the Confederacy.

That is very similar to Mao's idea. The peasants surrounding and cutting off the big cities, but truth is that a person living in a small town on a 1/2 acre is just as dependent as a person living in NYC in a Brownstone, maybe more so.

Harold
Slavery was the cause of the Civil War. If there had not been slavery there would not have been a Republican Party, if not for slavery the Whigs would not have imploded nor the Democrats fracture into pieces, there never would have been a candidate Lincoln or a President Lincoln, South Carolina and 6 other states would not have left the Union, there never would have been the Star of the West trying to sail into Charleston Harbor to re-supply Sumter and Lincoln wouldn't have tried to re-supply it nor would have a guy named P. G. T. Beauregard opened fire on it.

But the war itself was not over slavery for the north it was to preserve the Union and for the south to defend their homes from Yankee aggression. One of the greatest ironies of the war as I said.

TWO COUNTRIES
This election made it clearer to me that we have two countries here. One is mostly rural and smalltown, and the other the East Coast/West Coast and big cities. The smalltown/rurals are condescended to and looked down upon. Yet if there's a catastrophic event, the big city people are going to look to the rurals to save them. Big city people are almost totally dependent upon outside help for their daily needs. Only the smalltown/rurals and their self-reliant ways will have the knowhow to survive should something horrible happen. Katrina was enough evidence for me. Signed, Safe in Cajunland

Hide the Confederate Flag?
Why? Contrary to what the Liberals say, it is not the symbol of racism. It is a symbol of the south. When this country first got into the slavery business, we were flying the Union Jack. So, why isn't the British flag called the symbol of slavery? Slavery then continued under the stars and stripes. The Confederate flag didn't come into being until southern states began to secede from the union. The Civil War was not because of slavery. It was about southern sovereignty. Lincoln did not put out his Emmancipation Proclamation until more than a year after the Civil War began. It was only then that slavery became one factor of the Civil War, it was not the cause of the Civil War!

As of December 20, 1860, Fort Sumter and the waters off SC which I think at the time it would have extended to 12 miles and since Sumter is in the middle of Charleston Harbor, it would be SC territory not US territory and thus the US troops on it where there illegally and SC had the right to expel them.

Akaqi #18
Kudos to a perfectly written response. Nobody could do any better.

Byrce
While I support the flag, it is not a center piece of my life. In fact I have no flags displayed at my home and at work I have the US flag (which is only there because it got rescued) and the Georgia flag (same story with the American flag), another US state flag and a flag of another country (these two being the original flag display on my desk).

I have a deal for you Bryce. The GOP gets the CSA battleflag and you get flag of the CP-USA, on the left a machine wheel and on the right the sickle and in the middle change the CPUSA to Democrats. Sounds fair to me.

Ridiculous Akagi
Fort Sumter was a US military post.

Bryce
The Confederates weren't Muslims, but the US forces were illegally occupying SC territory and SC had every right to expel them. Japan had military bases on Guam and Attu was the US wrong for attacking Guam and Attu? If Mexico had bases in Texas after Texas joined the Union, would the US be wrong for expeling the Mexicans?

What the GOP usually says is the flag is bad, shouldn't fly, blah blah blah.

What the GOP should say is that each state should decide what state flag it flies, what other colors it flies and where it flies them. That what people fly over their personal property is a personal issue and none of this is a Federal issue. And the question is a stupid one for being asked. It was asked in the GOP debate in 2000 and in 2008 and the Democrats in 2004 so Edwards could pander to the blacks and the race p*mp Al Sharpton could give his two-cents.

And isn't this "treasonous traitors" redundant? I will also add that the US was founded by treasonous traitors so up with treason!

President Don
How long before hate speech is replaced by "crimethink"?

Please note that nowhere do I disagree with the 1st Amendment principle here.

In fact, as I stated earlier it is my fervent hope that your passionate defense of the Confederate Flag as a 1st Amemdment principle is widely adopted by the GOP and becomes a centerpiece of their 2010 and 2012 campaigns.

Yes, nothing would please me more than to see the Condederate Flag as the emblem of the Republican Party, heck I hope they wave the flag at their next convention.

Slavery by non-whites
"Remeber, slavery existed before biblical times and was brought here by the colonists".

Actually, slavery existed among several American Native tribes on this continent long before white colonists set foot here.

Slavery has been close to a universal blight, but England and the United States were the first to develop a higher conscience and drive to end the practice.

Besides remnants of slavery in parts of Africa, what can one call the lower castes in present day India? They are functionally slaves if not worse off. And what about sex slavery?

The world should stop flagellating the USA hypocritically as racist and start admitting the near universality of slavery in the past and cleaning up its own ongoing sins in that regard.

Dixie
Play Dixie and let loose with a Rebel Yell! Shortly after I was graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1965 all the years of fun and memories were stipped clean. You see, when I attended TJ the fight song was Dixie and we flew our Rebel Flags proudly. They are no longer the TJ Rebels, they are the TJ Patriots. I won't even attend class reunions because I was not and will never be a TJ Patriot. I am and always will be a Thomas Jefferson Rebel. Sherry Bell

Slave holders
Of the two most famous generals in the War of Northern Aggression, which one owned slaves and which one did not?

General Hiram Ulysses Grant had owned slaves.
General Robert E. Lee never owned slaves, but he did have the responsibility of emancipating the slaves of hIs father-in-law, after Mr. Custis died.

Offensive Flags
We have a school in So. Calif. where it is forbidden to wear anything to do with the Red White and Blue, no American flag or anything patriotic as that might offend the Muslim and Hispanic children. My Quaker ancestors from Perquimans, Pasquotank, and Guilford Co's NC left the south 1806-1815 because they couldn't tolerate slavery.

The Bill of Rights is being cancelled as Hate Speech, no eminent domain property rights, no rights to a trial in court anymore, guns are dangerous no more guns, what next? Free Speech? what a joke. Welcome to the New World Order.

Citizens of the North and the South have died to protect the United States of America, but we are letting our elected officials ignore protecting our borders, telling us that they can't deport 20 to 30 million Illegal Aliens, and that we must not offend these invaders.

Won't all of you be proud when it will be criminal to display anything about that "has been nation" they use to call the United States, before we joined the New World Order dictator run world government. Welcome to the future. It's heerree.

bryce1
As usual, you libs do not get it. It is a free speech issue. Perhaps the Dems would like to run on a platform of "you can say whatever you like as long as you agree with us". Spin, spin, spin. The US invaded SC territory by attemting to resupply Doubleday at Sumter.

Absolutely correct CVN65
The eradication of blacks was obviously not the intent of the South.

To the South, blacks were valuable PROPERTY.

When I was in HS, years ago, UGA used to have these Confederate days, the frats would dress up in Confederate uniforms and the sororities in hoop skirts and the like. Those days are long past. One frat a few years ago which was mostly made up of AG majors had a few stalks of cotton planted in the front yard of their frat house. Someone complained it was racist to have cotton planted in the front yard. Let's see, frat is mostly ag majors, cotton is one of the biggest ag products in the state. If they had 300 acres in cotton would that be racist? Is the ag farm owned by the university in the next county that grows cotton to do research on racist for growing it? Give me a break.

Akagi
The yanks have been raised in an environment of grievance-mongering. Most of them have been taught that the Civil War was over slavery and that the Confederate Battle Flag is a symbol of racism and hatred. This only became an issue a few years back but the usual PC police subjects picked it up and ran with it. Why do you engage with these fact-allergic bloviators? They never answer a question directly... To compare the Flag to the swastika is puerile; the South did not engage in the systematic slaughter of blacks. That is the avocation of Planned Parenthood and Margret Sanger.

Splendid idea
My check is in the mail. My status as a proprietary small business and anticipating a "retroactive" tax increase, I could use the tax deduction.

Please continue with your support Akagi
In fact, as a liberal I would be delighted if this was adopted as a GOP platform plank, a lead campaign issue, the central theme in TV commercials, leaflets, and campaign speeches.

After all, the American public will no doubt recognize the nobility of defending a bunch or treasonous traitors who attacked the US military base at Fort Sumter. After all they weren't Muslims, so that apparently makes it a noble enterprise.

Bryce
P.s.

The GOP lost because the economy tanked and they blamed GWB and felt McCain had no clue about how to fix things. If Bush had been at 50% instead of 24% we would be talking about President-elect McCain right now.

MikeONYC
Re-read the article. There were two frats on a southern campus trying out-southern each other. Neither side was offended. The only person offended was the yankee interloper school bureaucrat. In the same timeframe, according to Adams, the PA was blaring offensive rap lyrics. The point is why is one group allow to offend while another is not?

It's okay with you if one segment of the student body exercises its rights using the N-word on the PA, arguably with the intent of offending others, but not okay if two frats display an image that is intended as a badge of self identity and not intentionally used to offend others?

Some of us are proud of our Southern heritage, warts and all. No one is proud of slavery, but we are proud of our ancestors who fought and died defending the right for the southern states to decide the issue without being dictated to by an overbearing North. And as many have already stated, there were plenty of economic and states' rights issues at play beyond slavery that factored into the decision of the southern states to secede. It was the northern states who saw their meal ticket leaving who brought about the war. The southern states attempted to leave peacefully.

The underlying suggestion in your post is that only southern whites are prejudiced against blacks, but even a casual glance at race relations north of the Mason-Dixon over the last 40 years would prove that suggestion false.

Perhaps it is northerners who have a problem with its southern cousins. Perhaps it's that same mentality that somehow arrives at the conclusion that if we just stop being so American the French and the rest of the world will like us.

Too bad. Some of us don't give a damn what the rest of the world or the North thinks about us.

bryce
I don't care who finds it offensive. I find things offensive too. I find Obama offensive, but can't do much about that can I. I find the PRC flag offensive. I find the KMT offensive.

You don't have the right not to be offended. A few don't like my name as it offends them--tough!

Don't like the so-called Confederate flag, tough get over it. Hey, bryce are you offended by the flag of SC, the Palmetto flag? It is a Confederate flag, adopted offically in 1861. How about the Georgia flag? Almost an exact replica of the Stars and Bars. The Flag of Arkansas? The big star inside the diamond represents the Confederacy. NC state flag? A modification of the Stars and Bars and very similar to the flag it adopted in 1861.

Why do some people support the flag. To some it represents Southern pride, support of a local sports team, saying "I am a redneck." Most rednecks view the term with pride. Few I would say see the flag as a symbol of slavery or even racial discrimination. But you Yankee libs just don't get it, so don't try.

This is exactly why the GOP got punked
Please note that Adams column is silent on what support of the Confederate flag means beyond the base Constitutional arguments.

Much has been made of the inherent racism of 96% of blacks voting for Obama. I ask posters, beyond the 1st Amendment argument, what is there in the defense of the flag by members of the right that is not absolutely repellent to blacks as well as large numbers of their fellow citizens?

"...it means to YOU, just as the swastika may have a different meaning to a German. What matters IS the perception, and, trust me, this lily-white conservative is gravely insulted by its display, and Southerners do themselves no favor in the eyes of America or the world by clinging to what, rightly or wrongly, is considered a symbol of hatred and racism by the vast majority of Americans."

To compare the Swastika to the Confederate Battleflag proves to me what an idiot you are. There is no comparison at all between the two regimes. Perhaps if Davis had the powers Hitler had the results would have been different. Don't care what insults you, you have no right not to be insulted. Most people in the world have no idea what the flag is. I had an American friend in Taiwan who wore it on his vest and no one knew what it was. He wore it he claimed because the Taiwanese wouldn't know he was an American, but the Americans would.

"I have to say that a University President probably has the right to withhold school funds for whatever reason he sees fit, and in this case, his decision was not totally without merit -- you can display all the Johnny Reb banners you like, but don't expect the school to pay for it."

He did not have the right. Sorry, DA (the d=dumb), but University administrators (it was an administrator, not the president, if you are going to comment at least get the facts right) aren't mini Hitlers who can crush free speech at will.

"On the grand scheme, this one isn't a blip - you can't call for the banning of the repugnant pro-PLO or Al Qaeda professors"

I never called for their bans, have you? Such a good conservative you are. What part of Congress shall make no law don't you understand?

MikeONYC Part I
"For all my Southern friends, the Confederate flag is an insult to black people, a raised middle finger to the North, and a symbol that really needs to be retired."

Don't care what it is to blacks or Yankees or anyone else. Okay, deal, retire it as soon as the US flag is as well since slavery existed far more years under it that any Confederate flag. The so-called Confederate flag was designed by and for the Confederate Army and few of them had slaves nor were they fighting for--in most cases--slavery. There is no such thing as THE Confederate flag.

"...but it was fought over slavery, and it led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of young men who need not have died."

It was not fought over slavery, secession was over slavery--the prosecution of war on both sides had little to do with slavery. One of the great ironies of the war. Yes, thousands died that shouldn't have. Perhaps they wouldn't have if Lincoln had simply let the South leave with a friendly goodbye. He could have started this by ending the illegal occupation of SC territory.

As far as anger goes I have none. You seem to be angry about the fact that you can't win this argument.

I was only responding to the assertion that the South has only one top-tier school. I got that list from the US News & World Reports website. I did not factor in politics, and I didn't include DC and MD schools, even though they are south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Had I done so, the list would have included:

Johns-Hopkins
University of MD
Catholic U
American U
Howard
Georgetown

I graduated from a 3rd-tier school, VCU, which has plenty of well-known northern schools ranked behind it. That was in 1980, and there was no shortage of liberal professors on campus then. Lord knows what it's like now.

"I agree that today's govt. is far more tyrranical than King George was..."

From the charges portion of the Declaration: "He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance." Sounds like the US today does it not?

First Amendment Enforcement
Why not report these facts to FIRE or the ACLU? I am sure they would be interested in slamming the college for this gross violation.

So your statistics below show that Blacks and Hispanics commit more crimes than Whites as a % to population. Whats you point. And if Blacks and Hispanics commit more crimes would it not be logical that they would under go more police stops and searches based on statistical history.

Of the crime victims, 40 percent were black, 31 percent were Hispanic, 19 percent were white and 9 percent Asian. Of the suspects identified by victims, 60 percent were black, 28 percent were Hispanic, 8 percent were white and almost 3 percent were Asian. Of those stopped on the street by the police and searched, 49 percent were black, 32 percent were Hispanic, 16 percent were white and 2 percent were Asian. Of those arrested, 55 percent were black, 31 percent Hispanic, 9 percent white and 3 percent Asian.
Care to see if this is inline with the population ?

How About Some Intelligent Discussion?

For all my Southern friends, the Confederate flag is an insult to black people, a raised middle finger to the North, and a symbol that really needs to be retired. The War of Northern Aggression may aggrieve you to this day, but it was fought over slavery, and it led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of young men who need not have died. It really doesn't matter what it means to YOU, just as the swastika may have a different meaning to a German. What matters IS the perception, and, trust me, this lily-white conservative is gravely insulted by its display, and Southerners do themselves no favor in the eyes of America or the world by clinging to what, rightly or wrongly, is considered a symbol of hatred and racism by the vast majority of Americans.

So, put up all the flags or offensive signs you like, and understand that doing so is protected under the U.S. Constitution. It gives Americans the right to be as obnoxious an stupid as they choose. I have to say that a University President probably has the right to withhold school funds for whatever reason he sees fit, and in this case, his decision was not totally without merit -- you can display all the Johnny Reb banners you like, but don't expect the school to pay for it.

On the grand scheme, this one isn't a blip - you can't call for the banning of the repugnant pro-PLO or Al Qaeda professors one day, and then abjure the banning of a symbol found offensive by so many the next. Hypocrisy doesn't suit you, Mike.

scott s.
The SCV has sued to stop racist groups from using the flag and have failed. How do you suggest the SCV stop the misuse of the flag? The KKK has first amendment rights too you know.

The South did leave peacefully. Troops of the United States illegally occupied South Carolina territory, the US illegally tried to re-supply the illegal troops at Sumter (Star of the West, January 1861) but they were driven away when cadets from the Citadel fired on her. Her entry into SC waters without permission was an act of war by the United States. Lincoln was planning yet another re-supply effort.

Anderson was given the demands to surrender and end the illegal occupation, he refused and thus the Confederate forces expelled the foreign hostile troops by force. At that time Lincoln called for 75,000 troops to invade the now independent states at which time four other states left the Union.

I will say it was a mistake to fire on her. Any US ship that attempted to re-supply the fort should have been fired apon to drive them back from the fort and let the troops simply be starved out. Sumter could not have lasted more than a few more days, but that is history as they say.

The Confederacy fired the first shots, but the United States started the war.
