Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Welcome back UNCW Students!

If you have not yet heard (or read) about me, I am an outspoken Christian professor who has, at times, been critical of certain aspects of evolution. I mention this because it affects the way I see you and the way I will treat you this semester.

Rather than seeing you as the mere product of random mutation, I see you as a unique individual who is of infinite worth to his Creator. Each one of you has unique and special talents and along with that a distinct purpose in life that makes you not just unique but irreplaceable.

Unfortunately, I sometimes have students who resist fulfilling their God-given potential. Often, they do things in college that hurt their chances of success in life. One good example is a fellow named Davidson Myers whom I first taught in the fall of 1999.

Davidson, who aspired to be a lawyer, came into my class late on several occasions. He was also prone to turning around in his seat and yapping in class with another student by the name of Paula Tyndall. This went on for weeks until Davidson the aspiring lawyer got back his first test grade. It was a “C” in a class called “Criminal Law and Procedure” that was central to his career aspirations. He was devastated so he came by the office to see me.

When Davidson came by he told me he could not afford to be getting “Cs” because he was going to be a lawyer. My response to Davidson was simple: “No, you’re never going to be a lawyer. Not until you get your (offensive term deleted) together.”

A truly bizarre thing happened to Davidson after I told him to get to class on time and pay attention or he would never amount to anything. He actually did what I told him to do. In other words, he took responsibility for his actions like a man, not a victim. (Author’s Note: The terms “victim” and “man” are as incompatible as “compassionate” and “Marxist”).

In addition to getting an “A” on my next exam he took another of my courses the next semester. He got an “A.” Today, he is a lawyer married to another lawyer. He and his wife have a successful practice here in North Carolina. When I called him to ask permission to share his story he laughed uncontrollably. I consider him a friend and someone I would hire were I to get into trouble with the law.

By the way, here is the (threefold) reason I am sharing Davidson’s story with you today:

1. Every time you enter my class late – even one second late as you should be in your chair before the class begins – I will send you an email with the question “Who is Davidson Myers?” in the subject line. If you can tell me who he is, I will only deduct one point from your final average. If you cannot, I will deduct a letter grade.

2. Every time you flap your jaws with one of your classmates while I am lecturing I will send you an email with the question “Who is Davidson Myers?” in the subject line. If you can tell me who he is, I will only deduct one point from your final average. If you cannot, I will deduct a letter grade.

3. Every time I see or hear your cell phone in my class I will send you an email with the question “Who is Davidson Myers?” in the subject line. If you can tell me who he is, I will only deduct one point from your final average. If you cannot, I will deduct a letter grade.

My approach to teaching is very different than the approach of those who teach in the victim producing disciplines like sociology and social work. Those professors seek a nation populated by dependent losers because they value job security more than they value you.

I, on the other hand love my God very much. And I know that he loves each and every one of you. That is why I consider it my duty to make sure you act responsibly and that you become all that you were intended to be. If you find that offensive then you are probably enrolled in the wrong class.

I look forward to our first class on Wednesday!

Sincerely,

Mike S. Adams

Excellent point, tahssard is brain dead.
Good points. Personal accountability and focus is an excellent theme, and one to emulate in class. Too bad others fail to understand that simple concept.

May all of you rstudents have the same success.

Dr. Adams
I would have enrolled eagerly in your class had I been a student at your university. This is the kind of teacher I always appreciated in my learning career, and the kind of teach I TRIED to be in my own teaching career!

Michael

Be careful about that "I am an outspoken Christian professor..." bit. If you wish to believe in an all-purpose "higher power" generalized God, than I suppose that is your prerogative. However, in the classroom, pushing a specific Jesus agenda is probably illegal (meaning it can be deemed unconstitutional). You may have Muslim students or Jewish students...and I'm quite certain you wouldn't want the reverse: a militant "outspoken muslim professor" shaking his Qur'an at his captive impressionable audience.

In fact, the whole theme of this column (personal responsibility, promptness, respect for fellow students, etc.) is all do-able within the confines of a SECULAR philosophy. You are clearly searching for ways to foist christianity upon tender, pliable minds.

Mike, is using CHRISTIANITY, in and of itself ("I am an outspoken Christian professor... I see you as a unique individual who is of infinite worth to his Creator"), really necessary to get the kid to arrive on time and sit in the damned chair and not socialize after the start of class?

I suppose if homosexual christian professors wish to COUNTER your views of Leviticus (and let's face it, Mike. You pick and choose your abominations. It's not like you oppose eating pork or rabbit...or cutting the beard...or mixing fabrics - ALL proscribed in Leviticus - yet you curiously zoom in on gay sex)... then you'd have to agree to let them. SEE? Better to leave all specific religious references out of the classroom.

Oh. And you made a crack at "Marxism"
being incompatible with "compassionate". I'm off-topic here, but I'd like to say a few words about out current economic system.

Unfettered capitalism is in process of
transforming the country. Viacom, Citicorp, Exxon.... Unfettered capitalism allows for bigger and bigger mergers. The redistribution of wealth is now going basically in one direction....from your paychecks to big business/big government's pockets (big business & government have for all intents and purposes merged also).

I don't know what Karl Marx would make of our current frightening system where corporations and the wealthy get richer - while the middle class (swiftly becoming lower-middle class) bear the brunt and struggle to live with soaring interest rates, crushing inflation, a devalued currency.

This is not "capitalism". It is called CORPORATISM. We are swiftly finding ourselves governed by international corporations. And the republicans are daily being programmed to believe this is GOOD. And it seems to be working.

Now you know why America will cease to exist as an economic superpower before long. International corporations don't have allegiances to COUNTRIES. They are out for their own self-interests, and some of you are anti-american enough to consistently support international corporations like Exxon-Mobil in its current bid to obtain more land for offshore drilling (it should be nationalized, not privatized; America is not reaping the rewards of her own natural resouces).

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

will
There are already marxists and homosexuals and islamists pushing their agendas in the classroom. Mike is in the minority really as an outspoken christian in a non christian university. perhaps when pork eaters, fabric mixers and beard cutters start demanding their lifestyle choices be accepted as good and moral and demand that we love them for it, mike will start commenting on those things. incidentally, homosexuality is also condemned in the new testament and in most all religions and cultures throughout history, the other things are not.

tahssard,

requiring a student to pay attention in class doesnt take the thrill out of life, it merely is a means to challenge students to get the most out of their education so that their lives in the future will be more thrilling. you want a thrill, work hard now and the thrills will come.

LOL
"No, you’re never going to be a lawyer. Not until you get your (offensive term deleted) together.” Now that's some tough love! However, I am conflicted, as he used it to help someone become a lawyer.

GM

Ok. Let's go slowly here. You write, "...perhaps when pork eaters, fabric mixers and beard cutters start demanding their lifestyle choices be accepted as good and moral and demand that we love them for it, mike will start commenting on those things".

You are not grasping the POINT, GM. Mike himself, regardless if I or any other gay posters post on this thread, feels free to extract ONE PARTICULAR "abomination" from Leviticus while completely ignoring the rest. Then he uses this extrraction as a stick to hit me with.

Remember, within the Book itself, there is no "hierarchy" of which abominations are more abominable. No "pecking order". If Mike eats bacon for breakfast, there is no getting around the fact that PORK EATERS and MEN LYING WITH MEN are EQUALLY abominable. The book mandates male circumcision. Adultery and homosexuality are equally abominable. As are sacrificing children to the rival god Molech, eating shellfish and this strange prohibition:

"Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination" (chapter 11)

-------

Throughout the Book, there is a laundry list of abominations / proscriptions / prohibitions. It is clear that evangelicals feel perfectly comfortable slicing one or two out of the pack (usually having to do with sex), while not only LEAVING the others as "innocuous", but actually breaking the Law (cutting the beard, eating a porkchop, not circumsizing your son).

Christians discriminating against gays based on cherry-picking this one "abomination" is lunacy.

sigh...
It seems people find this trite superficial and obvious and treakly collumn inspiring, so... , now I know why Spielberg and Hollywood make so much money on the pap they serves out. Smashing paradigms, turning our flawed society inside out, and winning nobel prizes is what I inspire my students to push for, nothing as mundane as being a lawyer married to another lawyer living within the styfling confines of the flat earth worldview of creationism.

Pushing................
........a "Jesus specific agenda"?? It's a Criminal Law and Procedure class, sport - you really are as ignorant as you come across, aren't you.

And tahssard, I'll take Mike's "worldview" over your narrow minded liberal slant any day.

I pity you both.

Forget the being gay = eating shellfish
Anyone who makes that claim reveals their own lack of understanding of theology, including BHO.

For Christians, the Old Testament dietary restrictions do not apply (see Acts 10). The prohibitions on sexual immorality, including homosexuality, are re-emphasized (see the beginning of Romans). This isn't just cherrypicking one over the other - one applies and one does not.

As for Jesus himself, he loved everyone including homosexuals, but he was not a moral relativist. He condemned even lust as "adultery in the heart."

Jesus died so that people can be saved from their sins. People who instead deny that they are sinning and insist that Jesus is fine with whatever they do have a wrong conception of him.

tahssard
Winning Nobel prizes? Do you mean the Nobel prize in physics or medicine, awarded to geniuses like Albert Einstein, Francis Krick, and Richard Feynman, whose work changed the world, or do you mean the "peace" prize, given to Yasser Arafat, who was the antithesis of peace and the moron Al Gore, whose suggestions, if implemented, will cause not peace, vut widespread poverty? I guess he figures peace will reign if nobody can afford a gun.

Thanks Will...
You wrote.....and I'm quite certain you wouldn't want the reverse: a militant "outspoken muslim professor" shaking his Qur'an at his captive impressionable audience'.

Will, the problem with 'outspoken' people of all religions is that they believe they have a god-given right to be loud, self-righteous, condescending, insulting, arrogant and boring.

Monologue Mike also writes...'I, on the other hand love my God very much. And I know that he loves each and every one of you. That is why I consider it my duty to make sure you act responsibly...'

The pompousness of this man makes me want to barf.

abominations in Leviticus
Dietary laws were part of the ceremonial law, Will. When God announced that the ceremonial law had been fulfilled and was no longer needed, the apostle Peter was horrified (Acts 10).

"Arise, Peter, kill and eat!"

"By no mean, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean."

"What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy."

Homosexuality was not forbidden under the ceremonial nature. It is forbidden because it is a sin against one's one body (Rom. 1; cf. Gen. 2).

All the smaller matters would fall into place, Will, if you could understand the difference that the Messiah made (and continues to make). All of history is centred around Him.

Lets All Relax
So barf, and do it on Will. Christian professors scare the both of you. Take a walk on the wild side, walk with your creator.

As to Dr. Adams, post something intelligent instead of drivel.

LetsAllRelax is the same is MellorSJ2
Why is the same person posting under two different names? And Will posts under another name as well. Makes you wonder.

tahssard the tard
"Turning our flawed society inside out" gets you an inside out flawed society which is flaweder than it was when you touched it. For THAT your students should get Nobel prizes?

Married lawyers lives are mundane? If they were gay married lawyers, would they be smashing enough paradigms for you?

ANY worldview is stifled by its principles, by what defines it - except of course the worldview of a "professor" who can't even spell yet makes a fine living brainwashing his students with the same dozen or so pompous, empty, meaningless phrases, juggled around all day, ad nauseam, like 'smashing paradigms'. Which is why "the young progressives" that come out of your hands can't keep their arms from automatically popping up and waving each time they hear some empty suit chanting Hooooope! Peeeeace!

A question
As I understand it Christians believe the "Old Testament" is/was "the word of god" and followed it's rules and teachings until the "New (and improved?) Testament" came into being. So my question is when do you think version 3 is going to be released? Don't tell me it will never be released because you can't change or correct "the word of god". The fact that the "New Testament" exists proves that claim to be false.

Anderson...
Sorry, I am my own living, breathing person.
Will, we're obviously touching a nerve with these American Taliban clones :-).

Christian, Muslim, Bhuddist, Anamist professors do not scare me in the least. But religious nutters (sorry, fanatics) do. And Good Ol' Mike is one of those.

this is hilarious....
The lurking atheists take a tale about accepting responsability and turn it into a pedestrian, freshman year philosophy critique of the bible(and by the way, the "new testament" is exactly that, a new testament. Not a revision or an rescension of the old. Please sign up for a entry level course in religion,or maybe talk to a priest? I learned this in CCD when I was ten.)

And since when does telling someone you think they are a unique product of a special force make them a "nutter"?

Its good to see that paranoia and ignorance arent the exclusive property of the right.

notable day
will rarely posts about anything other than homosexuality. So it's a bit of a surprise that he held forth on the evils of capitalism. It's no surprise that he is totally wrong about it. The mergers that he so decries are not the result of unfettered capitalism. They are the result of the restrictions an over-bearing government places on small companies that makes them economically unable to compete with the large companies.

teacher as slavemaster, not teacher
The first thing you should teach is that grades are meaningless, yet you use them as a standard of self-righteousness.

Jesus said do not judge, yet you are constantly judging others.

You are not a teacher, you are a sophist. You also lack self-awareness.

Steve writes:
"Jesus said do not judge, yet you are constantly judging others."
-----

It is not for humans to "judge" others as God would judge them, i.e., their immortal souls.

This has nothing at all to do with human constructs - such as "judging" a performance in a classroom, or "judging" a convicted felon in a courtroom.

Will, you're an idiot
Read the whole bible, not just Leviticus, and you will understand why most things in Leviticus were superseded by the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus. Read Romans 1 (that's in the New Testament) and you will find homosexuality condemned there too.

professors like Dr. Adams
are few and far between. If one of my profs had told me to get my head out while I was in my first year I would have graduated a year sooner.

And a high-handed, preachy style of speech has little to do with what religion one follows but upon the character of the individual. I've seen about the same number of preachy atheists and agnostics as Christians. Some people just want to impose their views upon others, won't allow others to speak against the views that they themselves hold, and try to claim the moral high ground as a defense. Sorry Will, this includes you.

More lawyers, Gods work?
I like Mike Adams, but at the end of the day he helps produce lawyers. I know not all lawyers are bad but.... Lawyers are behind most of our problems. I think you're smok'in something if you think lawyers are going to someday be the cure.

Only a tiny # of doctors become abortionists. 50% of lawyers defend the guilty. 80% of lawyers send money to the Dems.

I'd hate to have shortage of doctors, but a shortage of lawyers.... that would be a very good thing.

Will the fool
There is NOTHING, repeat NOTHING, that a corporation(or any company) can force you to do without GOVERNMENT. If they try I suggest you call the police.

Anyone can start a business to compete with any corporation. Although corporate taxes, regulations and other government intrusion may make it hard for you to compete with them.

Corporations are held by stockholders, aka PEOPLE. Somewhere north of 75% of the country own stock now. Corporations allow any person to partake in a companies success.

Finally, the dietary restrictions in the Old Testament(pig and shellfish largely) are due to the fact those creatures basically eat filth and are not very healthy.

Keep reaching, one day you will reach some type of common sense.

Steve
Matthew 7
1. Judge not, that ye be not judged
2. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again

Judge here means condemnation and punishment, not calling sin a sin.

Also not verse 7

7. Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

So sad, Mike....
that parents have not taught their children the things you must teach them. Such mundane things as being on time, paying attention in class, taking responsibility for their acts (and omissions). Those things are absolutely required for one to be successful in life. And to get the best value for the tons of money their parents are shelling out for, hopefully, an education.

To Will: I recently heard something that is so perfect for you and your cohorts, but I will paraphrase and clean it up a bit. "Defending homosexuality is like polishing a piece of solid excrement. Even if you are successful, all you have is a shiny piece of solid excrement."

Mike, the louder they scream the better you are demolishing their empty rhetoric. Keep up the good work!

Will
As a middle class survivor, I will have to disagree with your viewpoint on capitolism vs marxism.

By putting a stranglehold squeaze on corporations, do you realize you would be affecting middle class me?

By Obama increasing higher taxation and more restrictions on those who have developed their businesses and succeeded, you in turn negatively affect those poor middle class folk that you think you're rooting for.

How? More taxation makes less profit margin, which in turn leaves less money for development, less customers because other corporations who are being dinged can't buy as much volume, which means less sales over all, which in turn means making even less money but being taxed the same high amounts.

So, what do corporations do when they make less money and have higher taxes? It means less bonus's for me, gimped benefits, and in the end, they are forced to shave down the staff because they cannot account for having the same number of employees when they are producing half of what they used to, which means middle class me loses her job.

Now, how did that help me?

America is based on capitalism, you can achieve as much as you can and profit. It's open to everyone and it stimulates our economy. Robin Hood attitudes are nice, but in reality, millionaires spend money on goods, those good are being bought from middle class folk like myself. Take that away and no one wins.

Corporations who thrive and profit reward their employees, the middle class folk like me. If you disagree, then you're working for the wrong company.

whoa!
Tasshard, if you want excitement,I suggest you try drugs, unsafe sex, and driving while intoxicated. I'm sure there'll be plenty of opportunities on/off campus for all of the above. I have no idea of Prof Adams' classes are "entertaining" ("not boring") or not, but my guess is that they will at least offer you the OPPORTUNITY to learn something. Whether you take advantage of it or not is up to YOU. I'm a 57 year old "mom" and I'd tell you the same thing. But what do "moms" know??

Is your method really effective?
I admit I would not have wanted to be in your class. When I was in undergraduate school, and later law school, I didn't have time for games like that. We received our assignments for the first day and hit the ground running. I remember one student being unprepared, and the professor just asked him to leave. Which he did. The rest of the class then moved on.

GOOD GOING MIKE
GOOD GOING -
Yes, personal responsibility is critical to good performance in whatever "of value" one does. Also, GOOD GOING, for letting your students know up-front and clearly what you will be expecting from them. If they can't, won't or don't want to follow the rules, then get out. Makes damn good sense to me. Do those who may believe to the contrary want their most important affairs handled by anyone less inclined?

Reminds me of:
Who is John Galt?

What ... Will has add'l poster names?
Well, no wonder we have so many atheist/homosexuals posting here. Don't you see? If Will gears up with multiple Usernames he can make it look like there are many more like him than there really are. He is a minority, if Will actually exists at all. He may be a product of Soros Inc. There may be just employees of Soros Inc that go around and post as different people. See, it builds the impression.

And Will (or whoever you are), the California proposition looks to pass again. Are you prepared yet to move to Indonesia ... Oh, right they would put you to deathe there. I forgot, Indonesia is a Muslim nation. You would last only 'til they caught up with your abhorrent and illegal (there) lifestyle (they don't by the gene deal either) and deal with you ever so severely. You should probably move to Sweden.

Shells, you are wasting your time
trying to convince Will with facts and logic. It doesn't "feel" right to have some work hard and get more while someone else is lazy and has little. He is a moron and is beyond learning.

Will
Homosexual AND Marxist! I can't wait to see how you complete the trifecta.

ex-Wyomingite
writes, "...and to express themselves no matter how inelegantly or ungrammaatically."

Haha! I hate when this happens! When you vigorously scold others for incorrect or unruly grammar... and yet fail to spell correctly the key word (ungrammatically).

Sorry. Had to rib you a bit here. Just too ripe to pass up.

Religion in class?
We use words because they have meanings and we use them to communicate our thoughts to others. In reading this column, what I read was that Dr. Adams was trying to instill in his students a sense of personal responsibility that obviously WAS NOT taught in their homes, by their parents. That he referred to his God, he was referring to the worth of each and every individual in his class. He was pointing out that everything worthwhile requires effort to achieve. He was also trying to remove distractions that took away from his efforts to the rest of the class.

What I cannot understand, for the life of me, is how such a column can start a discussion on religion, and even stranger, a discussion of homosexuality. Dr. Adams is faced with a room full of young skulls full of mush, some of which want to learn, and he is trying to stop the distractions, and perhaps, just perhaps, to encourage the rest to take advantage of what they have available.

The Old Coot.

Old Coot

Mike himself interjected Jesus into this column (and into the classroom: "I am an outspoken Christian professor...").

Something in me bristles, though, when you characterize, "Dr. Adams is faced with a room full of young skulls full of mush.." These "young skulls" are young adults, some of whom are very serious students, their heads not at all "full of mush".

Maybe envisioning students heads as full of mush is a christian tactic. Their soupy heads are obviously in need of discipline, in need of redemption. I don't think this tactic works so well with young adults. You can take a 4-year-old child whose head is "full of mush" and shape and mold it into the contours of christianity (you gotta get them young! Intelligent older folks don't cotton too well to the idea of virgin births and tend to scoff at the idea that their lives are sinful and in need of redemption from an invisible heavenly superhero).

At any rate, the values Mike seeks to instill in his students (personal resposibility, promptness, respect) are thoroughly SECULAR concepts and not in need of Jesus or religion or any sort of supernatural magic at all. In other words, I am arguing Michael is RIGHT to foster these values. Just erase Jesus from the equation. That might get him into trouble after all. UNCW is a public university and receives federal funding.

I guess that ...
I guess that it has come to such a thing. In my day there were no cellphones. But, I did not have professors that would coddle you either. You did the work and got the grade, you earned.

well
Punctuality is very important and lateness or absenteeism, even if excused, should not be tolerated. It is contrary to success in education and employment.

That being said, Dr Adams is wrong. The terms “victim’ and “man’ can be compatible. Take Mike himself. He’s a man, but he has been the victim of a most cruel joke. God has such a quirky sense of humor.

Your parents were wrong!
You are not special, unless you rode the short bus. Get over it, we do not alter civilization to reward deviant behavior. We also don't punish anyone for what they do quietly (as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others), but we do take offense at being told we have to "respect" deviant behavior.

Liberals and homosexuals are proof that Darwin was wrong!

Let's all Relax? OK !!!!!!
Now bend over you fool and grab your ankles. After will gives it to you hard, do you know what's comin?? The Big O and he'll give it to you harder than you thought possible, Cheers

To Rich Not wealthy
Being homosexual is not a conservative or liberal thing ............. it is just what you are. I don't ask for respect, but don't ask me to live without my integrity.

Wendy, at 1:45am
Good one, but it's even worse than that: the lawyers are breeding!

ex-Wyomingite
I AM full of myself sometimes. I think, hopefully, I'm getting past the stage where I'm arguing just for the sake of arguing though.

I think religions are ultimately doing harm, but it is difficult to envision how a world without God would work exactly. When Marx said it (religion) is the opiate of the people, he was right. People seem to NEED their religious opiates. When you take away a sweeping philosophical concept like religion, SOMETHING needs to go into its place or there's choas and a sense of meaninglessness; structures break down (it's what's happening now in the U.S. The old religious doctrines & strictures no longer work, are not taken seriously, and nothing adequate has been devised to go into its place).

So, at least I realize religions do fill a spiritual need (like good art and music and literature). I am finding meaning in literature currently. Don't know how long this will last... (& you older guys had MUCH better music - in the 1960's - than we've got today. I am discovering Credence Clearwater Revival!)

Thanks for your advice.

ex-Wyomingite

At work, I post under my middle name josh. I am not trying, as someone suggested, to assume multiple alias to spread a certain atheistic or homosexual worldview. I had to open a new account for the work computer and both "Will" and "will" were taken.

Will

You're in over your head, will...
The point of Leviticus is NOT that ALL abominations are equal, the point is that they are decidedly inequal. You're suffering from an inadequate understanding and a less-than-full translation. The personal grooming/dietary laws were handed down because to do otherwise is an abomination against the BODY. Even modern science can prove that, (high levels of iodine in shellfish being dangerous to our health). Men lying with men is an abomination against G-d, his plan and his design. I'm sorry that fact escaped you but hopefully you'll understand now. (Oh, who am I kidding? will, won't.)

Stone
Is it not conceivable that homosexual sex was ALSO considered a sin against the body... just like eating pork or cutting the beard? Meaning, also a part of the cleanliness code?

Remember, ancient jews (who wrote Leviticus) were contemporaries of ancient Greek culture (and Roman) where gay sex was widely accepted (in fact, Greek culture was SO accepting of gay sex, it was so assimilated into the contemporary psyche, that the greek language had no word - no noun or adjective - differentiating straight sex from gay sex... there was just ONE word for "sex").

You can easily imagine that Gentiles coming newly to christianity in the first, second and third century (CE) would have been instilled with Greek and Roman values, both neutral with regards to homosexual sex and homosexual relationships (sorry, "relationships" is a fairly modern word! they wouldn't have used that). Early gentiles would have had no "issues" at all with eating pork or homosexuality.

At any rate, prohibitions against gay sex in those days would have had nothing to do with "morality", even on the jewish side. I am reading the ferociously learned "Christianity, Social Tolerance and Homosexuality - Gay People in Western Europe from the Beginning of the Christian Era to the Fourteenth Century" by John Boswell, a (now deceased) prominent historian and professor at Yale University, which argues exactly this point: that prohibitions against homosexuality in the ancient jewish world had nothing to do with morality. That the proscriptions against homosexuality had to do with the cleanliness codes.

Will

Will
Once again Will (or josh) has succeeded in hijacking the column.

The column is about a college classroom and student responsibility.

Will (or josh) cuts and pastes quotations from an anti-Christian website and believes he is clever.

His posts have nothing to do with this column.

Dr. Adams sets a standard for his classes that many instructors do not.

Congratulations, Dr. Adams. Keep up the good work.

On being gay = eating shellfish
Will,

It is illegal in most states (if not all) to drive 40 mph in a 30 mph zone; it is also illegal to kill 38 of your neighbors in cold blood with a butcher knife, cut them into little pieces, and bury them in your back yard. Should the punishment for both illegal acts be the same? If so, either Jeffrey Dhamer would have had to pay a $50 fine to the City Clerk to get off the hook, or I'd be sitting on death row right now for failure to observe the posted speed limit as I drove through town the other night. The logic that eating pork and sodomy with another man carry the same penalty seems a bit "out there" to me. I know you don't believe in God. Everyone at TH got the message. How many of us belittle you here because of your sexual preference? Few, if any, that I have seen; however, many of us are tired of your references to God and religion in the context of derogatory rhetoric. We also got the message that you are gay. Frankly, I don't care (and I doubt anyone else does, either). What you do in the privacy of your own home is between you, your partner, and God. I do not discuss my sexual preferences, fetishes, or desires to my friends, co-workers, or the other readers/posters in open forums on the web (or in parades that display such a PRIVATE matter before the public). You're here; you're qu@@r; you're not going anywhere... we get it. It is unnecessary to remind us of that every time you post on TH. Show more respect for us "naive Christian WASPS and/or unenlightened prudish Conservative folk," and you will get it in return. That's a promise.

Two separate issues
That Mike is a Christian conservative doesn't bother me at all -- it's what America is all about, freedom of conscience.

What bothers me is that while Mikee constantly chides his favorite targets (i.e., "victims", Feminist, Marxists, Queers, Abortionists, Tree-Huggers), he himself plays the VICTIM !!

Think about it. Mikee has actually equated his pathetic "sufferings", disrimination, etc., to those endured by REAL victims: Blacks under slavery, or under Jim Crow laws.

Adams shouts his Christianity from the rooftops. Adams wears his religion/Conservatism not just on his sleeve, but splattered across his big carcass: From his glasses to his hunting boots.

Adams can't shut up about his "I'm superior to you" religion. Makes you wonder: does Adams love his adopted religion for its own sake? Or does he use it to enjoy the thrill of being a fake "Martyr" without enduring what REAL martyrs (like beaten slaves and Civil Rights heroes), had to suffer?

Professor Adams' Letter to his Students
Priceless, simply priceless.

Halloween
Mike ... Have you considered a stint as a ghoul for the coming Halloween season? Your letter is sure to scare the pants off conventionally educated recent HS grads ... Imagine...taking respondsibility for yourself ! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Not grasping the point Will
"You are not grasping the POINT, GM. Mike himself, regardless if I or any other gay posters post on this thread, feels free to extract ONE PARTICULAR "abomination" from Leviticus while completely ignoring the rest. Then he uses this extrraction as a stick to hit me with."

Mike is not a jew. The levitical code is not something he follows. He follows the spirit of the law which is love. the heart of the spiritual code is the new testament, so if you want to argue with a christian about morality stick to the new testament. Romans 1:24-31 for starters.

It talks specifically about homosexuality and lesbianism as well as gossip, slander, god haters, insolence ,arrogance, disobeying parents, greed.

Christians talk about these things all the time. If you go to a Gay pride parade you see this behaviour on display. Its not just the sex, its the God hating, insolence, disobeying parents, gossip etc. any sin tends to overlap with other sins and even breeds more sin. Homosexual gains a focus because amongst all these other sins it has a voice. it is politicized, and it is shoved not our faces begging for a response. and that response is not always nice. Non jews and muslims eat pork but we dont shout it from the rooftops. greedy, insolent gossipping christians dont ask others to accept them for who they are, they either try to overcome it, or live the lie secretly. You do neither. you are outspoken trying to convince us that homosexual sex is not an abomination but a gift from God something to be celebrated. How are we supposed to react?

Mr. vince, no victims here.
A victim whines, like you are about how others have suffered more than so and so. Those who fight back either with the pen or faithful endurance are not victims. they are overcomers. they are winners. The victims in society look to others to help them and never consider helping themselves. the civil rights martyrs like MLK were never victims by definition because they used their intellect and faithful endurance to turn back the tide of injustice. they used the courts like Mike is doing as well. And why does mike use the courts? to defend his right of free speech that the marxists enjoy. You talk of tolerance but you dont tolerate disagreeable speech. you talk of injustice but ignore your hand in it.

The marxists in universities use no judicial means to right perceived injustices that dont really exist as a means to advance a failed ideology that has no place in a society of free people. They hold meaningless vigils and alert the liberal media to every fanciful cause they can think of all the while proclaiming woe is me, I am a victim, I need higher taxes to redistribute wealth because I cant take the initiative to achieve. They pass speech codes on campus that usurp the constitutionally protected rights of all citizens. And mike fights this. He does something. while the whiners lament.

Davidson!!!

GM do you even know what a Marxist is or do you like to throw that word around describing anyone who doesn't agree with you?

GM

Hondo is right. You appear to just use the word "Marxist" as some sort of multi-purpose putdown - and not much else.

What do you MEAN by Marxist? Marxist as in a revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat? Karl Marx who believed that the inevitable failure of capitalism would lead to a just society, communism, by way of the workers, the proletarians?

You start off a sentence with: "The marxists in universities..."

Please, what IS the marxist agenda in the universities, GM? And how does it differ from the Leninist or Mao agendas in the universities (I am not being coy here. I really don't think you have a grasp on Marxist ideology. The least you could do is study the guy - even if you disagree with the majority of his thought, most agree he was one of the single most influential and important philosophers of the 19th century).

Tells1
Good thinking. Good instruction. Its late and the rest of these comments are making me dizzy. Marx, Engles, Obama, Newton, Einstein, Darwin, Larry, Moe, Curly Joe. Too much talk. Blah, Blah Blah. If religion is the opiate of the people, why did Marx invent a government to play the role of religion? Cause he wanted to keep the idiots drugged so he could control them. Then comes Obama. He drugs so many with his words like "change". "Change" a feel good word. Does not need content because it feels good. Who does not want a change in their circumstances. Content is intentionally left out. That way it goes directly to the feel good center. Yep, Barak, you got em mesmerized with your religion. Its called "change". It feels good. Like a noose.

GM and Serpentdove

My point being what does Marxism have to do with this article? However, I see no connection with Obama to Marxism. Your trying desperately to connect things that don't.

You say that Obama using feel good words like change, well Serpentdove he explained the changes he want to make and they are great ideas.

You also ended your post with "like a noose" please explain yourself? Are you racist? And you wonder why African Americans don't vote for your party.

Steve, Judging
Christ did not say "Judge not." What he said was, "judge, not lest ye be judged by the same measure you use to judge others." In other words, how you judge your neighbor is how you to will be judged by God. So, judge away as long as you are willing to have the same standard set for yourself.

Ian
Who makes up all these rules & interpretations?

Mr. GM is duped...
.. in several areas. (1) There are no real "Marxists" on campuses any more. You exaggerate.

(2) Mikee Adams has you duped. He has more rights and privileges and comforts than he can count on his fat trigger fingers. Yet he whines with his penned sarcasm, fancying himself a "victim" like REAL victims (Jews in the Third Reich, Blacks in the American Old South etc.). Everything Adams does, he does with a view towards self enhancement. He is narcissistic.

(3) Actually Dr. King and many Civil Rights were literally victims. King was wrongly jailed and humiliated on many occasions. Others were viciously beaten or shot by Bible-Belt White racists. Mike Adams never has, never will, endure REAL martyrdom. So he pretends.

Bandu's tahssard the tard
Your post cracked me up. "smashing paradigms", puhleese. Smashing Pumpkins. blah blah blah
Professor tard's rhetoric bespeaks illusions of grandeur with a smidgeon of megalomania tossed into the mix. Methinks he is just a poseur who is at his core, full of (offensiv term deleted).

RE:notable day
I agree. On those rare occasions when Will ventures out into the world beyond the crotch, he has some very perceptive things to say.

Will/Josh subject:Stone
Will, immediately upon reading of your esteemed historian/author John Boswell being deceased, upon Googling him up, I found just what I suspected. He flamed out from AIDS. Resultantly, I would find it hard to trust any research by him to be unbiased in the area of homosexuality.
His demise is a sad situation, for if he had only followed the tenets of his Catholic faith, he would be a healthy, thriving individual to this day. A great loss to the academic community. A total loss to himself.
Epitaph: "He threw it all away for a D in the A"

As a public school teacher
I am bound by this school board policy: "Assessment should be based on impartial, consistent observation of the quality of the student's work and his/her mastery of course content and objectives as demonstrated through classroom participation, homework and tests. The student's behavior and effort shall be reported in separate evaluations, not in his/her academic grade." I am not allowed to consider behavior ins assigning academic grades.

Mike, however operates under this stated policy:" Each faculty member has the academic freedom and responsibility to determine grades according to any method, chosen by the faculty member, which is professionally acceptable, communicated to everyone in the class, and applied to all students equally. However, prejudiced or capricious academic evaluation by a faculty member is a violation of a student's rights and constitutes valid grounds for a grade appeal..." Religion aside, I sure wish I had his tools to encourage appropriate behavior.

I love Dr. Adams
the only disagreement i have with him is the same one I had with professors when I was in college. Granted I never had it happen to me but I disagreed either way.

And that is the assine policy of deducting full letter grades for stupid issues such as being late, etc. That is a power trip of professors and has no basis for learning.

Granted I was never late, missed a few classes within reason, but never walked in late, never had a cell phone interuption, etc.

But the idea of basing a grade on issues such as punctuality, etc does not teach someone anything. In fact in the working world punctuality is a mere guidline as I have never had a boss on time. In the working world if you showed up late by 1 second to a meeting and your boss docked you a weeks salary, granted you would never do it again but at the same time that company would have no employees either.

Dr. Adams is a model for college professors. But sadly he is a victim of his own ego sometimes.
