Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Dear Mr. Boortz (www.Boortz.com):

I’m getting sick and tired of young drivers with cell phones. Just a couple of nights ago some kid who was parked next to me took several minutes to pull out of a parking space while he was trying to send a text message. The kid just pulled out of the space and stopped right behind me oblivious to the fact that I was waiting on him as he just text messaged away in a little dream world of his own.

Some might say that isn’t a big deal. But have you ever been sideswiped – or nearly sideswiped – by some idiot teenager trying to merge onto an interstate while sending a text message? I almost got hit by one of those little sociopaths a few weeks ago on I-20 West not far from Atlanta. At the time, I thought a .357 Magnum was the only cure for such self-absorption. But, recently, I have discovered a more reasonable alternative. I want to share it with you and your millions of listeners (and maybe even your best friend Bill O’Reilly).

“Street Safe” is a new program that was designed to provide teen drivers with the proper tools, which will teach them to react calmly in certain dangerous automobile situations. For example, it teaches them the proper correction when running off the road and about driving while distracted. It also deals with issues of drinking and driving.

This non-profit program was started by a retired police officer for the right reason: He simply got tired of wiping pieces of dead kids off of windshields. He knows, all too well, that about 40% of the deaths of people between the ages of 16 and 24 are the result of automobile accidents.

In my view, the only way to deal with irresponsible teen drivers is to: 1) Take the keys away from them as soon as they do something stupid behind the wheel of an automobile, and 2) Give the keys back to them only after they have been given the proper tools and training to help them be better, more responsible drivers.

Street Safe is the perfect course to accomplish the objective of making teens better, more responsible drivers. It is a four-hour course with hands-on and classroom training. Our local District Attorney for New Hanover County, North Carolina (Democrat Ben David) was so impressed with this program that he has now made it the de facto driving school for offenders aged 21 and younger. This Republican agrees wholeheartedly with that decision.

Because the founder of Street Safe needs corporate sponsorship to continue to offer the program - as well as to expand into other markets like Miami and New York City – he wanted me to bring it to the attention of my good friend Neal Boortz. But I have an even better idea.

Neal, I want you to make a plea to all parents, regardless of whether their kids have done something stupid behind the wheel of a car. Ask them to visit the Street Safe website (www.streetsafeus.com) and watch the video overview (http://streetsafeus.com/faq.asp) of the program. I’m convinced that if they do that, many will decide it is worth the $25 it costs to enroll their teens in the course before they do something to cause mandatory enrollment.

If they do, here’s what they can expect:

1. Evasive maneuvering exercises. Students are put through a course designed to test their ability to handle a car but get this: They do it both with and without a cell phone in hand in order to teach the importance of driving without distractions.
2. Tailgating. Most teens think they can stop on a dime. But this course shows them they cannot. It shows them exactly how much room they need at a given speed.
3. Loss of control. Teens who take this course have the experience of losing control of an automobile for just a few seconds at about 25 miles per hour. Better still, there are several other teens in the car with them when they lose control. Those passengers learn quickly the importance of getting out of a car operated by an incompetent or otherwise unsafe driver.
4. Fatal Vision. Special goggles help simulate the experience of being inebriated. Even kids who have never had a sip of alcohol will learn about the precise effects of alcohol on their motor (no pun intended) abilities. They will perform tests in golf carts and will try to pass roadside sobriety tests with goggles that will help them realistically assess their chances of fooling the police.

Just as getting mugged can make a person a conservative overnight, getting in a car accident can make a person a cautious driver overnight. When kids turn twenty-one, parents can consider getting them guns to prevent those life altering muggings. But long before kids turn twenty-one, parents can consider sending them to Street Safe to prevent those life altering accidents.

Thanks for helping me spread the word, Neal. I know this is one of your pet peeves (and it’s certainly one of mine). If you want to work together to make sure this program becomes a reality all across America, just send me a text message. On second thought, I’ll just see you next time I’m in Atlanta.

Cellphones more dangerous than alcohol

Seriously. I have been in two accidents caused by someone on a cell phone, none by a drunk driver.

Yeah Yeah
Driving complaints are nothing but a game of "Pick your Moron."

How about the SELFISH JERKS who insist on blocking a driveway/parking entrance/sidestreet while stopped in a line? Because being stopped ten feet further up makes all the difference.

How about the IDIOTS who get on the freeway at 40 mph? Hey PINHEAD, you're supposed to enter the freeway at the speed of the traffic you're merging into!

Speaking of merging, YIELD signs are not the same thing as MERGE signs. They have two different signs for a reason, because THEY ARE NOT SYNONYMOUS! YIELD means YIELD, stop, stay back, wait, give the right of way!

Speaking of merging traffic, guess whose responsibility it is to safely move into traffic. I'll give you a hint, it's THE PERSON MERGING INTO TRAFFIC. That's right MORON, you don't have the right to move to the end of the on-ramp doing 15mph UNDER the flow of traffic, using "The Force" to merge into traffic, not bothering to look over your shoulder because it's all those other fools job to make sure you merge safely into traffic. Their job is to travel at a safe distance from the car in front of them while maintaining speed so YOU IDIOTS MERGING INTO TRAFFIC can safely gauge your own speed and merge.

Pick your moron. There are countless numbers out there.

Phone usage?
I've had the opportunity to talk to almost 100 road flaggers because of a research project I did last year. Interestingly, almost all of them wanted a ban on phone usage while driving. Most of the comments went like this: "Whenever a car approaches the zone too fast, or too slow, or too far to the left, or too far to the right, or stops way too late, or just blows through the stop sign--nine times out of ten it's someone yacking on the phone. The tenth time, it's someone over 90 years old."

Now Americans somehow survived up until the mid-90s (when cell phones became more universal) without phoning while driving. But those who like to talk while driving are too large a political constituency, and elderly drivers, of course, vote in huge numbers.

In Britain, where talking on a hand-held phone is now banned while driving (unless you first pull over), the mortality-per-mile-driven rate is now lower than the United States, despite their much smaller cars and narrower roads. Business has continued to boom in Britain despite disproven fears to the contrary.

The problem is, in our egocentric, anti-religious age, the very idea of "doing without" out of decency to our neighbors has become the ultimate in political incorrectness.

Binkie Deprogramming
Because any effort to take away the electronic umbilical cord, however fleetingly, brings hysterical shrieking from Helicopter Mommies, I believe the answer comes much sooner than the driving license. Large swaths of life must be made Electronic Binkie Free, starting at birth. That is, the majority of places where more than one person who is not a relative are gathered should be made No Electronics Zones, and people should be encouraged, if not forced, to turn off the Binkie and interact without it for the time they are there.

In my opinion, the steep rise in accidents, including kids being hit by trains and fire trucks because their iPods have deafened them and are cranked up to Eleven, is caused by the Wirehead Culture that has convinced the GrabbyBabies and Generation Whine that being *out of touch* for a nanosecond is the moral equivalent of waterboarding. Schools that have tried to restrict cell phone usage in classrooms have been attacked by Mommies screaming that having that umbilical cord cut for any time at all will be fatal not only to the child but to his Mommy! Consequently, the brats grow up believing that unless they are leashed to an Electronic Binkie, they are in imminent danger of death. The only answer is deprogramming from birth. People lived without electronic Binkies for centuries and millenia; they can learn to do it again.

cell phones
audir10...its too late. women have taken over the world and we all now live inside a never ending stage play entitled the vagina monologues. the most dangerous missile in the world is a chick on a cell phone in a suv and there are millions of them. much more aggressive than boys in pickups. no contest.

Right on Mike
Forget the maroons who merge onto a multilane highway and immediately move to the left lane and stay there at 10-15 mph below the prevailing speed of traffic -- I'm not addressing speed limit issues here. The worst drivers of all those who drive distracted, whether putting on makeup, shaving, reading the newspaper, are the ones on cell phones. They are oblivious to everything going on around them, they can't maintain a consistent speed (or immediately drop their speed by 10 mph or more) and I consider myself lucky if they stay even close to keeping to their own lane when I pass them.

Dr. Adams
In my street last year, there were three accidents, two caused by teens, one by an adult, and ALL WERE ON THEIR CELLPHONES!! One teen took out our community mailbox, another damaged two vehicles parked on the street, and the adult ran into a garage door, which belonged to HIS NEIGHBOR, since he turned into the wrong driveway.

Cellphone usage is banned on military installations, with great results. Although I'm leery of banning anything, I doubt that people as a herd will become more responsible. Hopefully, this course will activate the responsibility gene that lays dormant until one is in a life-altering experience.

Thanks for the great column!!

It's not just teens
Neraly EVERYONE thinks they're capable of driving just as well while talking on a cell phone as they do while not. Over half think they're capable of text messaging and driving at the same time. It's always the "other guy."

The plain, stark-staring fact of the matter is that NOBODY drives as well. Some people can't walk and chew gum at the same time and are a danger to themselves and others on the road in the best of circumstances, never mind while carrying on an inane conversation with little Johnny or Suzy while trying to control a 3000 lb projectile in heavy traffic.

It boils down to America's entitlement mentality, a lack of consideration for anyone other than Good Old #1, and the blantent stupidity of the great unwashed.

The most serious accident I've witnessed is one in which a guy in an SUV passed me on an off ramp in his haste to make a green light. I could see that he was talking on a cell phone as he passed me. Well, we both made it through the green light, but unlike him, I noticed that under the bridge, there was a car stopped in his lane, waiting to take a left onto the on ramp (traffic waiting for the red light had blocked it.) The SUV plowed into the back of the Cavalier killing two children and critically injuring another child and their mother. He and his cell phone escaped unscathed. No doubt he still believes he's capable of driving and celling at the same time.

A couple of weeks ago here in Massachusetts, a teen driver killed a youngster on a bicycle because he drove up onto the sidewalk while text messaging and ran the kid over. No doubt he truly thought HE was capable of carrying it off as well.

wow
Here’s one that even a curmudgeon like me finds agreeable. I can’t wait for the thread to develop so I can see how the libs take it as a personal offence and the cons find the link to a global conspiracy to turn us all into gay Moslems and destroy America.

Run off the road
I'll bet that runing off the road is close to cell phones as a cause of teen deaths. I taught my kids to regain control when running off the road by making them do it, over and over, easy to difficult. Any of them can drop the right side tires off the pavement at 70 mph and get back on the road without running off the other side or hitting an oncoming car head-on.

The papers are full of stories about teens being killed in such situations. If you have never done it, panic takes over. If you've done it many times before, reflexes take over.

Oh yes, Give me more laws
Give me more government intrusion. Let's give the state even more power. Last time I looked, driving distracted was already illegal; but let's give big brother another reason to intrude on our lives because we don't have the will to enforce the laws we already have. Let's make everyone sink to the lowest common denominator. Yep, that's the ticket..

/sarc = off

I think educating these knuckleheads (the ones causing the problem) is the correct course. I'm with Mike on this one. The maddened mob calling for more government has lost its collective mind. And on a conservative site no less. Those of you calling for more government while calling yourselves conservatives should take a deep breath and do a little introspection. You're acting like a bunch of nanny state Liberals.

Just fine it
"I’m getting sick and tired of young drivers with cell phones."

It's drivers of all ages on cellphones.

Yankeeman: "Interestingly, almost all of them wanted a ban on phone usage while driving."

We have one in DC. $500 fine if caught using it without the hands-free headset or speaker phone set-up. The argument is that it is an accident risk.

Mary C.

Scottie
So let me understand you correctly.

Do you think the impostion of drivers licenses, speed limits, uniform rules of the road, traffic signals and penalties for infractions are all nanny-state intrusions on your freedom to do what you please?

The fact is that cell phones are a new technology and it's already being abused by people like you who imagine themselves capable of talking on a phone and driving undistracted. When you put other people in danger by yapping on a frigging cell phone while driving a car, it is not your "right" to do so. After you've killed someone by your negligent use of both a cellphone and an automobile, try telling the family of thatmkid you ran over that he was interfering with your "right" to cell while driving.

This isn't a "liberal" or "conservative" issue, any more than requiring drivers to be licensed. It's a public safety issue.

By the way, conservatives don't have to be stupid or luddites. Sometimes restricting the irresponsibility of idiots is a good thing. I personally know of three children killied by morons driving while celling.

Get rid of interior mirrors
I don't know how many women I've had to wait for who started combing her hair before backing out of a parking place. Just the other day I was behind one at a stop light. As soon as the light turned green, SHE STARTED COMBING HER HAIR, oblivious of the fact I wanted to make the green light too.

Just some common sense
It is just common sense, hang the phone up and pay attention to the road.

I understand in Germany you can get a ticket for not paying proper attention your responsibly to drive. They take their driving seriously.

Has anyone else noticed that Kevin McCullough's column on the video game Mass Effect - the Sex Box has been removed from Townhall. I guess that Townhall is fearing a lawsuit.

sedonaman
"Get rid of interior mirrors"

????
Rear view mirrors are the only interior ones I have ever seen, and I think you might find them necessary whilst driving!

Mary C.

Get off the damn phone
Don't cha love it when some tiny individual in a monster GMC SUV in what amounts to the cockpit of a 747 makes a left turn into traffic while holding a phone in one hand, yakkin away and trying to actually turn the thing?

I embarrass my wife when I scream out the window;
'Get off the damn phone'

Bravo!
I just realized that this column was written by the Mike Adams who always posts ad nauseum about the evils and perils of feminists and independent women.

Kudos to achieving what I thought was the impossible: You found another, completely unrelated subject!

Of course, with this new subject, we will all be deprived of the ramblings of Demosthenes (always served in triplicate).

Mary C.

In our community,
more then teenagers, it is the young mothers in big vans or suv's sometimes with several kids in the back.

I don't have a cell phone!
I had one for a while. Then I figured out, if someone wanted to contact me they had other ways. I have been driving for decades and never had a wreck. Drive defensively and pay attention to the road.

Two years ago I noticed that my driver's license had expired, six months before. That day I went down to the Highway Department to get a new license. I had someone else drive me. I had to take the written test and driving test all over again. I passed both sections. The hardest part was the driving part.

N/A
Feminists are the most hypocritical loonytoons on the face of the planet. They're far too funny to take seriously anymore.

Huge SUVs
Huge SUVs are another one of my pet peeves. I guess size goes with the person's ego. I hardly see more than one person in the SUV .......... and, then when you have to park next to them in parking lot, you can't see anything when you begin to back out.

Not just teens
At least teens have the excuse for being young, inexperienced and stupid. What about adults?

The mother of one of my son's football teammates was killed 2 days ago because she was talking on her cell phone and pulled out in front of a semi. Her stupidity has left 2 teenage boys without their mother. Her ex-husband is begging people to not use a cell phone while driving. Her memorial service is Saturday.

And while driving home after dropping my daughter at school, I had 2 different soccer mom types run stop signs in our development. They acted like there wasn't a sign there. The retired people in the patio homes also frequently run the stop signs. They weren't talking on cell phones, but were stupid just the same.

Oh, and the guy shaving with one hand while talking on the phone with the other hand. Who the hell was driving the car? At 45 mph!

There is NOTHING so important that it can't wait until you are stopped safely, out of traffic. And that includes your hair, your makeup, or your beard.

Bravo

I saw that the column was at 943 posts last I checked yesterday. I'm not surprised it has been removed, after reading the posts from gamers.

As far as cellphones go, out of necessity I own one, but ask me how many people actually have the number! Not even my mom-in-law!! If they want to find me, they can leave a message at home.

Sorry for the Duplicate
The posting kept not showing up after I posted it. (This must happen to Demosthenes every time). It usually goes right up.

"Feminists are the most hypocritical loonytoons on the face of the planet. They're far too funny to take seriously anymore."

Do you even know what a feminist really is? I am not talking about some loony celebrity you consider to be one and use to paint the whole group. (Besides, you have some real lulus on the SoCo side, so before casting stones...)

Feminism means believing that a woman is equal to a man under the law. I find it rather disturbing that there are still men out there who are frightened by this. Real men are not afraid of strong women. Weak, emasculated little boys are.

Mary C.

Appalling
I was almost sideswiped by a teen with on a cell phone. I was so shocked I almost spilled my coffee and dropped my electric shaver.

N/A
Frightened? Don't flatter youself.

And don't hand me that crap about feminists believe in "equality." Feminism is flat-out anti male, whether it's radical feminism, socialist feminism, cultural feminism, or my special favorite, ecofeminism.

I've read reams of literature, magazines (including Ms.), essays and websites by feminists. Apparently you have not.

Go to http://www.trythinking.net navigate to the right side and click on the feminist symbol on the upper left. It's stuff all written by feminists, Tell me that I'm wrong.

Also tell me why feminists villified Clarence Thomas and Bob Packwood, but gave Willie "The Wagger" Clinton a pass? Hypocrites.

N/A
Women and men have been equal under the law for 40 years. Yet there are still feminists, trying to change things. Why?

Because feminism is about more than just equality for women. There is a profound left-wing bias in the NOW (presumably a feminist organization) trying to reshape our culture, eradicate our traditions, and undermine our values. They are anti-life, anti-family, anti-marriage, anti-free-market and anti-male.

Feminists think that women are so strong that they need special organizations just for them, special offices on campus, special policies and extra government spending. For some reason women are strong until they get pregnant, at which point the poor fragile little thing needs a special operation to save her from the responsibilities of parenthood.

I expect women to be strong, smart, and capable all on their own, without need for any government programs or extra help.

Audi, you nailed it!
I ran an alternative high school for several years and these impaired mothers, aka, "helicopter mommies", went ballistic when I confiscated junior's cell phone. Much like a Democratic politician to a chronically dependent person, one does not deny mommy's beloved child, no matter how dumb and destructive the latter becomes.

Even after trying to get past their insane shrieking to explain that their kid's electronics were disruptive and kept them way off task, they stayed their course. "I may need to get in touch with them!!!!" was the standard, screaming response.

Then I tried to get past their volume to ask them if they're the one who their child is calling or talking with 6 times in an hour. That was to no avail.

The worst word a drug addict, leftist or alcoholic can hear is "no". The same goes for the impaired parent. All four are basically adolescents who want what they want -- NOW -- no matter how disruptive and sometimes dangerous it is to others! And junior just sits back with that silly grin on his (or her) face.

Try this
Over the last few years I've made it a point to notice the make and model of cars that I observe doing something stupid, dangerous or inconsiderate. Unfortunately, I don't always get a chance to notice the sex or age of the driver. Here's what I have gleaned from my admittedly unscientific observations: 1) The Toyota Camry is the car of choice for some of the worst and/or inconsiderate drivers on the road. 2) They are usually piloted by yuppies. Male or female.

My favorite
Woman driving SUV, while talking on cell phone (in one hand), starbucks mochlate in the other hand, 2 kids in the back seat and the only part of her body making contact with the steering wheel is her knee.

I see some variation of the foregoing 3-4 times a day on my way to work (a whopping 10 minute drive).

Interior mirrors
N/A, there are three factory-installed mirrors inside my car, and only one is useful to the driver for seeing what is behind the car. The other two are in the visors. My wife uses the one on her side if she wants to see something behind us.

My favorite
I did not see this, but the last time my wife and I took a defensive driving course (an every three year event), the instructor told us of something he saw--a woman who, along with two or three other things, was nursing her baby.

Just curious
Why are people ignoring the topic?

Mike is wanting people to support a positive program that addresses a serious issue. If you go to the links and watch the videos then perhaps his column would be clear.

Car crashes are the NUMBER ONE killer of teens!!! Far worse numbers than the War in Iraq. Perhaps that will help the perspective. I think providing our teens with positive, accurate, assistance concerning the number one threat to their lives would be important to us as individuals, as well as our legislative representatives. Here is an answer that is non-political, neither left nor right.

Need decent people in the game business

Years ago I suggested to the president of a so-called Computer Game Company, that they create games that were educational, that taught teenagers how to live on a budget based on a job might be qualified for in a few years, and how to live in our society.

I suggested this kind of game to the Dept of Ed in Sacramento, 45 years ago, before they had computer power enough to do the job. Now they have the power, but maybe not the brains.

The Game man was horrified that I might get that implemented, he would rather teach kids how to kill.

Have you ever heard of a computer game that did not promote something that was illegal, immoral, or frightening?

The other day in the Mall, a lady was watching her three cute daughters jump up and down and around on that game you see projected on the floor at many Malls.

I asked her if she would like a game that taught them how to make their bed, that taught how to clean up their room – – and she quickly said, and how to be kind to Mommy.

But try to get a game like that written, no chance

Earnest Will
Altho I agree with everything you say, I hope I never run afoul of you, b/c your anger makes me fear Road Rage, a problem you don't cite in your list of offenses.

Younger, your car was made for a woman
That is why even the driver's side visor has a mirror, so that they can apply makeup without having to use the rearview mirror. Car models that are made and marketed to men do not have that mirror on the driver side visor. (at least htis used to be the case, but with more men having plasic surgery, perhaps all makes come with both now. I don't know as I always buy used and haven't shopped for a new car in ages.)

jim
Back in the 70's I suggested to the local school system that I could help students who were having problems with geography by holding an after school session of playing wargames like WW2, Diplomacy and other games, and they'd catch a bit of history in the process.

They were horrified.

I've got to agree with many guys
Women I've come to refer to as "Lunch Ladies" on cell phones are THE WORST. Here she comes in those fashionable sun glasses, turning into your lane with phone pressed to her head and lips in non-stop frantic motion. Then there's the aimless driven swagger, which features sudden stops and turns; mouth constantly moving. I had to drive into NYC today, and damn if the profile isn't consistent.
It used to be prudent to look out for old guys in pancake hats with ears that stick out driving pasty colored Chryslers. Now its bunchy-haired ladies in buggy-eyed sun glasses on the phone in a sage green Odysseys (or something like it). Probably with "Hillary" bumper stickers!!

Moron's
Earnest Will "yeah yeah"... thanks, you have one of the same pet peaves as I, "merging"... you said it well.

Feminism is about the hatred of men. It's as simple as that. You're only half right about Mike Adams. He does criticize feminism, but he doesn't criticize independent women.

Bob C
Since you seem determined to be obtuse, let me restate: Driving while distracted is already illegal! Go ahead, ban cell phones.
Next will come smoking (do you doubt this?), then eating in a vehicle, then radios and CD players will be banned as will DVD players and game consols for the kids. It will never stop, and you know it.

Since you seem to favor more nanny state intrusion, are you ready to have your vehicle's computer programed to prevent you from driving over 55 (saves gas you know)? The technology is certainly available. How about a mandate that your vehicle uplink to big brother every night for the purpose of issuing you citations for all of the infractions it recorded during the day (under the guise of public safety, of course)?

If you can drive OK while using a cell phone, or smoking, or eating, or listening to the radio, what's the harm? It's only when you can't that you interfere with others. And it is precisely at that point that one should be ticketed. Tarring all drivers for the misdeeds of the few jugheads that stand out because they are jugheads is not the solution, nor is more government.

Bob C
"Sometimes restricting the irresponsibility of idiots is a good thing. I personally know of three children killied by morons driving while celling."

I am not opposed to restricting the irresponsibility of idiots. I am opposed to restricting the behavior of everyone because of the behavior of idiots. Be clear here, I'm against giving the government ever more power, not a proponent of sanctioning idiotic behavior.

I assume you want the murderous morons you cite punished, as do I. I just don't want you and I to be punished for the misdeeds of thexd morons. There is a difference.

Oldsocialworker
You have the stereotype nailed! My wife and I both notice that the majority of folks talking on their cell phones while driving are younger women in their SUVs or minivans. Usually the guys you see with a phone to their ear are driving obviously work vehicles, frequently pickups.

These women don't seem to be able to live without a phone in their ear. I see them pushing their tykes in strollers with a phone in their ear (do they ever pay attention to the kids!) My wife has commented about a neighbor lady who will drive into her garage and get out talking on the phone--I thought she was exagerating but have watched her a few times and alway see her on the phone (even watch her go down to the street and drag the garbage can in without ever hanging up the phone!)

I've been stuck behind so many slow-moving Camrys in my lifetime that I used to think they were incapable of operating faster than 45 mph.

Scottie wrote: "I am not opposed to restricting the irresponsibility of idiots. I am opposed to restricting the behavior of everyone because of the behavior of idiots. Be clear here, I'm against giving the government ever more power, not a proponent of sanctioning idiotic behavior."

Well said; I couldn't agree with you more.

Colosteve
stereotypes are always derrived from healthy slices of common reality! Watch those blabbering lips on your neighbor- it should be an Olympic sport!

Stories...
My brother and wife lived in a very upscale neighborhood around Atlanta. The next door neighbor's daughter cranked up the car, put it in reverse and went right through the garage door.

One of my sister's put her two children in her car and was in a rush to get somewhere. She put her car in reverse and backed into her husband's car in the driveway. She just got out of the car, went inside and laid down.

Neither incident was cell phone related......just funny.........no one was hurt.

Remember to drive defensively! And, maintain your car!

Cells and texting are a nightmare
Parents control your children?? Sure; how about he is 29 and makes six figures.

Drivers
I don't mind the big pick-ups, as usually those people actually know how to drive. Ditto the big semi's. It's the young women in little cars who cut corners(twice had them almost hit my left front fender while I was stopped at a stop sign and they were in a left-hand turn onto my street)and use cellphones, and moms in big vehicles with 6 kids in back, distracted. The worst is the yuppy types in BMWs and Audis on I-5 between Eugene and Portland. They have to change lanes continually and pass everyone in sight--it's a compulsion. I have to laugh when I catch up with them at the first traffic tie-up and pass them if my lane is still moving. I have a policy, generally, of if they want the road--they can have it.

Scottie
Let me put it this way.

I'll bet you think you can drive and talk on a cell phone at the same time and you believe that there is no difference in your performance.

I rest my case.

To eor
I resent what you wrote........."The worst is the yuppy types in BMWs." LOL. I drive a BMW. Heck they are made in South Carolina, where I live. And, as I have said, I have never had so much as a dented fender ......... KNOCKING ON WOOD AS I TYPE THIS!

Perhaps all Highway Departments would put up signs with a such following statements:

Pay attention to the #$%@ road while driving, your life depends upon it.

Ooops!!
Sorry Swampfox! I didn't mean to imply that EVERYBODY driving Audis and BMWs are idiots.

Text-Messaging Punks
I like your .357 Magnum alternative much better. It's a more certain and permanent solution.

Scottie:
By your ultra-libertarian logic, drunk driving should only be punished after there has been an accident. After all, the majority of the time, when a driver drives drunk, there is no accident.

By your logic, the fear of punishment AFTER an accident should be enough to deter drunk drivers. However, there is a near-national consensus that it isn't, and that cops have a right, nay a duty, to stop the completely unnecessary activity of drunk driving BEFORE an accident happens.

Should that right and duty be taken away from cops? That's not a rhetorical question. Or should DUI/DWI's be handed out only after an accident?

The fact that distracted driving is already illegal is clearly and unambiguously not deterring the irresponsible, as both surveys and anecdotes are showing. Driving while phone-yacking is completely unnecessary--we managed to do without it up until the 90s.

We're Americans who can distinguish between self-indulgent activities and vital ones, not spoiled, wimpy children who can't abide a even a short break from our luxuries.

If you feel an unsatiated itch to drive while gabbing on the phone, go to a private track and do so. While you're using a road paid for by the taxpayers, the taxpayers have a perfect right to make the rules. That has been true since long before you were born.

Bob C
"I'll bet you think you can drive and talk on a cell phone at the same time and you believe that there is no difference in your performance."

Not exactly. There are times when focus is required, and times when it is less urgent. For example, if I am in rush hour traffic, I don't take or make phone calls. On the other hand, if I'm driving on a rural highway with miles of visibility and little other traffic, a phone call doesn't overwhelm my ability to drive safely.

Are you arguing that downtown rush hour traffic and cruising on a deserted interstate require the same amount of attention? Or that I am not smart enough to know the difference? Of that you can't distinguish the two? Of is it that some cannot tell the difference, so nobody should be allowed to make the decision for themselves and the state (or you) should make it for them?

Yankeeman
Your argument suffers in that it assumes that it is not possible under any circumstances to drive and use the cell phone simultaneously. It is by definition impossible to safely operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

It doesn't necessarily follow that it is also impossible to drive and listen to the radio, or smoke, or make a cell phone call. It's a judement call, as is everything else about driving. If you've ever made a right turn at a red light, you've used your own judgement to determine whether it was safe to do so.

Driving while distracted is just as illegal as failure to yield when making a right hand turn against a red light. Your logic would make this simple maneuver illegal since some people show bad judgement. Since some make bad decisions, nobody should be allowed to do so. Isn't that a true reflection of your logic?

King Liberal
That teenagers aren't the only ones doing it doesn't negate the fact that the many of them do. In fact, given their relative inexperience, it's hard to argue that they should be doing anything other than paying attention to their driving.

Oh yes
People using cell phones are dangerous. I've been saying this for over ten years. However, I have been living in Northern Arizona, near the Grand Canyon, for six years. What is more dangerous are those people who have no depth perception, or just don't care. Arizona has many two lane roads, including the one I drive. The above people decide to pass with not enough room to do so safely. In the past six years, I can't count the numbers of times I've had to slam on the brakes to prevent a head on accident at 65 mph. Double that, and it's about 191 feet per second!!!!!!!! Not survivable. And imagine them with their family in tow... Fu**ing scary.

Scottie...
To add to your comments to KL, teen drivers with no apparent distractions are more likely to be in accidents than experienced adult drivers. They just don't have the experience (by definition) on how to handle the unexpected. Plus they are more likely to make poor judgment calls (e.g. pulling out into traffic that we would never dream of trying). Add to this mix being distracted by making phone calls or texting someone you have a recipe for disaster.

Colosteve, great response to Scottie.
I enjoyed reading the pro/con between Scottie and the posters responding to him/her. I am not in favor of more intrusive government nannyism either, but having a 16 year old son who just got his permit, and a 24 year old who tells me he can shift, drive, and text at the same time gives me pause. I am not sure if cell phones were banned if people would even follow the law anyway, just like drunk drivers don't follow the law, illegal aliens don't get licenses, and uninsured drivers don't get insurance. All these people get tickets after the fact and it still makes no difference.

A big shout out to the poster who brought up the issue of YIELD signs. Our community is known for
"yield means go as fast as you can and shove your way into the line of traffic (which has the right of way!!) demanding someone slam on the brakes (and get rear ended) just to let you on."

Mike, thanks for the terrific column and links. I wish our state had this driving course, but since it does not, I am going to ask my 16 year old's driver education teacher to consider doing some of these evasive techniques with my son. My husband took our older son out to do these kinds of things, including ice/snow techniques...and it has made him a better driver (even if he still thinks he can cell, text, shift, and drive at the same time.)

Pay attention to the ROAD.
In South Carolina they can stop and ticket you for not having a seatbelt on. They can stop you for going over the posted speed limit (which is not obeyed unless a patrol car is nearby) But they can't stop and ticket you for paying insufficient attention to the road. There was a time, not too long ago, that people could live without a cellphone glued to their damn ear.

Colosteve - excellent point
"They just don't have the experience (by definition) on how to handle the unexpected. Plus they are more likely to make poor judgment calls"

Not only can they not handle the unexpected, they CREATE MORE of the unexpected to be handled. Not unreasonable to imagine the rate of harm rising exponetially, the longer it goes on. Parents, hug your kids before they leave the house.

A distinction
Talking on the cell phone (when appropriate and safe to do so) is in no way equivalent to texting with one. It is simply not possible to compose text while driving. Nor am I a fan of in car navigation systems that divert attention from the road. I can talk on a speakerphone and drive at the same time if the situation isn't too 'busy'. I don't even do that if traffic is heavy or complex. I claim no ability to watch the road while typing, reading or watching a movie screen, nor do I think anyone else can.

Swampfox
Distracted driving is often referred to as "Careless or Reckless" driving and you can be pulled over and ticketed for it. Of course the police have to do more than eat donuts and wait for the radar to beep in order to enforce it.

Bob C and Cleverness of Me
No , I am not "flattering" myself. Real feminism is not about hating men. (Note: By the use of the term "radical" in their title, any idiot can see that a group espousing something called "radical feminism" is going to be extreme (clue: the term "radical"). It is tantamount to claiming that NAMBLA represents gay rights or the Nation of Islam represents black civil rights.)

Cleverness (???): you wrote: "Women and men have been equal under the law for 40 years."
Well, that is due to feminism, which has only been around that long.

Also, your claim that women get government funding for abortions is unfounded,. There is (and has been for ages) a complete ban on the use of federal funds for abortions. I suppose you all think it is better spent paying out welfare applicants for 18 years of child support (which reminds me of Hillary's "it takes a village" crap).

You say these feminists are "anti-family." That would depend on what you define as "family." I have seen that word hijacked,
along with "Christian" and "values," to
become a four-letter word. They have been transformed to words representing the idea that women should "submit" to their man and stay home raising multitudes of babies. Sane women do not want to be a doormat to some man suffering from his own insecurities and low self-esteem. That does not make a woman a "man-hater."

Bob C: you web site had no symbol. There were just a lot of rants about Hillary and Democrats. It was loads of blah, blah, blah boring same-old, same old, but I saw nothing about feminists.

Mary C.

Thanks
Mr. Adams,

Thank you for posting the link for streetsafe. As the mom of a 16 yo son, it will be mandatory before he starts driving.

Blessings,

Street Safe
It is very easy for us to single out teen drivers and call them irresponsible and idiots and yes it is the number one killer of young people in this country. While we point fingers and call them names we are the same people who have let the driver's education system deteriorate to the point where you can actually learn to drive via an online class without any real behind the wheel experience in some states. Let's stop blaming teenagers for their inexperience and immature behavior and start teaching them how to drive properly and show them what consequences distractions can have while driving. States only require a certain number of hours behind the wheel and then they take a test on particular driving skills they supposedly learn during their training. Think back to your own Driver's Education and it was probably taught by your high school gym teacher. What did you do when you drove. You learned how to parallel park, use hand signals for turning and stopping etc. Did you ever really learn how operate a vehicle on the road with all the other driver's out there for an extended period of time. How many of us took our instructor on errands such as to the dry cleaners or through the fast food line? Parents need to take a more active role in their teens driving and driver's education needs to be overhauled to include training that StreetSafe, http://www.streetsafeus.com and programs like Driver's Edge, http://www.driversedge.org offer. Stop complaining and start helping these programs find the resources they need to educate our youth! How can we expect them to drive and behave responsibly when we have not given them the proper tools and training to allow them to make that responsible decision. You get what you put into it!

DUI & cellphones

In the link below you can read some facts. After reading the facts, I concluded that the action to take would be to abolish DUI laws. Most of "conservatives" that posted here will conclude that we should outlaw cell phones in the cars not ASAP, but yesterday. Sad.

In any case, I do know that Bob is worse driver after 6 beers than Bob after a quart of water. HOWEVER, who is to say that Bob is more dangerous than John that could be distracted by Big Mac, by babbling spouse, barking Snoopy on the back seat ... and so on? So what to do? I guess ban everything from the car, children included. Right, "conservatives"?

Here are the facts:

PS: I don't drink period, not even at home. I don't use cell phone in the car - no ifs and no buts. I'm a smoker and I don't smoke while driving - believe it or not I stop on long drives for a restroom and smoke.
