Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The other day, one of my readers asked “Why do you have to be so political and controversial in every column? Why can’t you just relax?” Well, those are good questions. And maybe they’re best answered with a non-political column on my favorite cigars of 2006 – a column written for my fellow cigar-smoking friend Dennis Prager. And, since I’m not being political, this is also for my favorite fat lesbian Rosie O’Donnell.

(Author’s Note: This column was sponsored, in part, by Donald Trump Enterprises, which has since filed for bankruptcy after an unsuccessful suit for sexual hair-assment against the producers of “The View,” a once-popular daytime talk show for recovering alcoholics).

10. Don Lino Africa by La Aurora. This 6 ½ - inch, 58- ring monster is among the more attractive cigars on my list. The dark and veiny wrapper gives a distinct coffee flavor to an otherwise earthy cigar. Few cigars I characterize as “earthy” make my annual Top Ten. But this one has too fine a burn, too nice a draw, and too powerful a punch not to merit inclusion.

9. La Flor Dominica Double Ligero DL-700. Measuring over 6 inches in length with a ring gauge of 60, this one will keep you occupied for a couple of hours. This is a rich medium to full-bodied cigar dominated by a coffee flavor. It is also slightly nutty with a good, firm draw. Several of my friends have placed this cigar in their year-end Top Five.

8. Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial Belicoso. This is by far the best bargain on my list. I get these cigars for $3.30 a piece from my buddy Steve Gimello at Brooklynn Cigars in Wilmington, N.C. (http://www.brookelynncigars.com/). At just over 6 inches, this 52-ring cigar is just the right size. It has a fantastic draw and burn with a dominant chocolate flavor. Creamy vanilla notes add to the flavor of this excellent medium to full-bodied cigar.

7. Sancho Panza Extra Fuerte Cadiz. This is a complex cigar – one I’ve heard described as woody, earthy, nutty, and leathery. I’ve detected coffee and chocolate flavors, too. After you smoke this medium-bodied 6 1/8-inch by 54-ring Virgin Sun Grown gem, write me at www.DrAdams.org to tell me how it tasted to you.

6. Oliva “O” Churchill Maduro. I’ve recommended this powerful 7 by 50 Nicaraguan before. But beware of the new packaging. The cloth cigar ring is gone - replaced with a standard paper ring – but it is still the same potent, full-bodied, after dinner smoke.

5. The Coronado by La Flor. This cigar comes in a 50, a 54, and a 60-ring version, all of which are seven inches long. I prefer the 54-ring but all are wonderful smokes.

Beware: This is a very powerful smoke. But the earthy flavor is complimented by a wonderfully rich and cedary finish that some will find to be the ideal combination in a full-bodied cigar.

4. The Edge Corojo by Rocky Patel. This 6 ¼ – inch, 52-ring cigar caused me to stop reading the cigar ratings in Cigar Aficionado. To call this cigar “grassy,” their raters must have smoked it right after putting down a crack pipe. Just after this spicy, potent cigar gets going, it begins to take on a sweet, hardwood flavor. Warning: It is potent, hence the name “The Edge.”

3. The Chisel Double Ligero Maduro by La Flor Dominica. This is the best tasting, most potent maduro I’ve ever smoked. It is best to use a “V” cutter on this 6-inch by 54-ring beauty – but not before operating any heavy machinery.

2. Rocky Patel Virgin Sun Grown Torpedo. I think every man deserves 72 of these virgin sun grown cigars when he gets to heaven. It is a rich, cedary, medium bodied cigar with a unique and tangy finish. This 6 by 52 gem just keeps getting better with every puff. I’ve burned my fingertips many a time on this wonderful cigar. I was hard pressed to keep this one out of the #1 slot.

1. The Chisel Double Ligero Natural by La Flor Dominica. Given my love of corojos, maduros, and virgin sun growns, it is really quite shocking that my #1 pick for 2006 is a cigar with a natural wrapper. Nonetheless, this is the best tasting cigar I’ve ever smoked. I’ve singed by eyebrows many a time sniffing the wrapper of this rich, cedary 6 by 54 beauty. The slightly spicy taste adds complexity to the finest fell-bodied smoke that money can buy. The communists in Cuba could never match the perfection found in this fine Dominican figurado.

Now that we’re done, could someone please pass the “V” cutter? It’s right next to my copy of The Satanic Verses.

A couple of nits...
Mike,

I have tried only a few of these cigars, so I won't challenge your rankings except in one regard: the Edge Maduro is superior to the Corojo!

Also, let me suggest that you should include a high value/cheap but very good cigar, the La Vieja Habana line from Drew Estates. If you like dark, spicy cigars at all, you will find these very satisfying and remarkably inexpensive.

If you are a frequent cigar smoker, these are definitely worth a try!

Whatever happened to Toscanellis?
I may have the spelling off, but when I was a kid, having somewhat fewer options about the adult company I kept, they were dominant. When the first was lit, any other tobacco, food, or drink item had a detectable odor or taste. You joined in or bailed. They looked like something produced at great, and painful, shakey effort by a small dog on a high-fiber diet. When lit, they truly smelled worse-but-similar, and tended to bubble a bit at the edge of the ash. They came in an unlined, coarse cardboard, pocket-sized box. Mostly yellow, if I remember correctly. Five for a quarter. Real men smoked Toscanellis; mostly really OLD real men, at least in the eyes of a kid in the '50s. They say that smells are the most evocative memories. I've been spared for about forty years now. Closest I've come was a $5 cigar I bought after winning $20 on a quarter slot in Elko, Nevada in 1964. Last cigar I ever bought.

Crotalus
Nice funny parody. Mike A. is probably enough of a sport to laugh too.

Let's discuss these over a cigar!!
Mike

Excellent choices! Personally, I too find the Edge maduro preferable to the corojo, (which is also a good smoke) but to each their own. Have you checked out Oliva's new Serie G? One of the best for the buck.

I'm going to have to give the Coronado and the Panza a try. Have no experience with either.

I know you're a Rocky fan... I'm surprised you made no mention of his Vintage. I really like 'em. Also the Edge Missile Maduro's are a personal fave.

No argument on the Chisel. Great smoke.

Next time you're in St Louis, let me know... we'll have to discuss politics over a fine cigar and maybe a glass of scotch or a nice merlot.

Prices?
Mike' I wish you would have included some average prices of these, I have only recently started buying on the internet, so this opens a whole new variety for me.

Anyone else like to post some ballpark figures on some listed, or your favorites.
Thanx

Cigar Afficionado
Agree on the C.A. evaluations. In the first few years of its life, they were a spectacular source for guys like me. Now they are little more than a high end lifestyle magazine. Too bad.

Who cares?
Just so you know, I didn't bother reading this column.

I have a favorite or two
Don't know any of those cigars...but I will pass your list on to my husband...
My favorites are a Partagas #4, and the Opus X.
Partagas is a perfect smoke for the Apres-ski in me...and the Opus X to be shared with a friend or husband- way to long for me to smoke alone! I might start turning green...I'm just a chick, after all.

La Flor?
I hope La Flor writes Dr. Adams a check. He's pluggin' 'em good!

Nee
I knew there was something I liked about you.
Your husband is one lucky guy!
Shes a conservative that smokes cigars, what a package.
Got any single friends out west? ( :

Camacho 11-18 Should Have Warning Labels
This little bad boy- 6 inches or a tad longer and 48-52 is not for the faint of heart. It should come with a "Do Not Operate Machinery, Power Tools, or Drive Vehicles" after using.

Goes great with good tunes or a Non-Chick Flick Movie (Open Range, Blackhawk Down, Gladiator, Last Man Standing, Last of The Mohicans, Braveheart-you get the idea) and a glass of Bailey's Irish Cream.

Try one but be warned. You'll enjoy it.
Just dont sign any legal documents or call ex-wives or girl friends.

Does anyone know
A good food or drink to cleanse the palet, so I could enjoy a good smoke.
Lately I have had a metalic taste in my mouth, and it detracts from the taste of my favorites.

Dude,
You left out Black and Mild.

Um...Solar
Yeah, I've got a friend...and I think my husband is pretty lucky, too! In a mere ten days,I will be skiing in the Alps if it f-ing snows! And enjoying a few good cubans apres-ski. Want me to have one for you?
About that metallic taste...are you taking anything for allergies or sinus...sometimes that dries out the mouth and interferes with taste. Also, some anti-migraine or anti-depressants....just a thought.

Nee
LOL Thanx burn one on my behalf.
No' actually I think it might be because I burn them too short.
I don't take meds...but maybe I should, acording the the lib. posters. (:

I drink alot of OJ and it is a bit acidic, so I wondered if others had a remedy for it, or if I was just wierd.
No need for comment on "wierd" (:

Cigars???
I rush to see Adams' column every week (or sooner) but as a 79-yr old woman I have one comment for this column.
Ho-hum zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wake me up when he stops resting. :-)))

Close, but no cigar
I didn't read it either.

Favorite
As an occasional cigar smoker (although I DO have quite a few in three different humidors), I always find Mike's annual cigar columns interesting. But I can understand why some of you don't bother to read these.

Those of you discouraged by "Cigar Aficionado", may I suggest you try out "Cigar Magazine"? It just began its third year and is published quarterly. I love it because 80% of it is about cigars, a little on pipes, and always has some great mini-biographies about great tobacco growers and cigar producers. Also... all their ratings are done by subscribers and I have found them to be really accurate to my tastes. The magazine has beautiful glossy pages and photography.

You can subscribe by going to http://www.cigar-magazine.com. They sometimes have nice freebies for new subscribers.

My personal favorites are still the Carlos Torano 1918 Cameroon Churchill for a moderate priced smoke, and ANY Padron 1964 Anniversary maduro for something special and pricey. If you like a powerhouse and flavorful maduro... try out the El Rey del Mundo Robusto Larga maduro... comes tissue wrapped and will knock you on your butt, but few cigars are more consistent & flavorful for the price.

Solar... palate cleaning for me can usually be accomplished by eating 3 or 4 saltine crackers with lots of butter spread on them. I don't know why this works, but it does!

To check out prices for Mike's favorites, here are three websites that sell most brands between them and usually for good prices, much better than you'd find in a local tobacco shop:

http://www.jrcigars.com
http://www.cigarsinternational.com
http://www.famous-smoke.com

Cheers!

let's talk cigars!
Those of you with nothing to say about cigars should relocate to a thread discussing anti-depressants.

Go, Mike, go!!!
That was very unkind to call Rosie your favorite fat lesbian!
The rest of the lesbos will get that LOF, don't you think?
Shame all over you, Mike!

And another thing, why would anyone think that you were being political? Or is just that the reader might take issue with your politics? I agree with most of what you say....so you can't possibly be talking politics!!!

Have a nice day. :)

StanMan

I wuz about ta;
I had intended to put in a gripe about the subject but I see there are many members interested in this subject so I'll just butt out and let you guys enjoy your smokes.

Primus54
Hey buddy, thanks so much, I will do that right now, I just got a new box of Dona Ines, and I know I would be wasting my time if I lit one up.
And thanx for all the links, I forgot you partake in one of Gods gifts.

Cigarlet Fever?
This column is fine so far as it goes, but a true patriotic reactionary will eschew cigars for a fine English tobacco in a properly broken in pipe. How about a column rating pipes and tobaccos? Then, there is the obligatory snifter of brandy or cognac...

Encouragement
The Prof should be encouraged to smoke any and all cigars, even light up in his office building. This is the traditional image of intellectual Professors that I recall from my college days --about the time of Adams' weaning. It is a sacred tradition that no institution of higher learning can afford to jettison. Bring back those ol' time Professors - turtle-necks, yellow teeth and cigar smoke.

What are you people smokin'
A fine mixture of Coffee hill grown, in the mountains of Columbia, the flowers of the deep-red streaked Oaxacan tops, gently crushed between an "inner" wrap, of the leaves of the "piggly plant". This plant also grows in the same coffee hills.

Finally, upon achieving a massive size of 62r,x8, "outer" wrapped in the finest lower leaves of the 7 year aged Cuban Tobacco plant, Smoked in a honey/beech smoker for 3-days, to capture the maxumim taste and scents of a non-bitter, slightly rich smoke, that can last for days.

I have never had anyone disagree with me as to the a** kickin' punch of this smoke!

WOW! Prof. Hunts and Enjoys Stogies...
I've only read two of your columns, this one about fine cigars, and the one about hawg hunting with comments about the D- student. I'm sitting up here is Sioux Narrows, Ontario, Canada at the only bar and grill open this New Years Day. It's opening day for lake trout, and In Fisherman Magazine has a crew reporting on this, with well known TV fishing personality, here as well. We're all enjoying our Cubans (mine's a Romeo j Juliette) which makes our trip just that much more enjoyable.

Mike, we've got to get you up here for a September bear hunt. I know that you 'profs' hand off alot of your duties to students, if Charles Syckes book, Prof Scam, is accurate. We'll score a bear or two in the bush, and savor a few smokes after a shore lunch of walleye.

I like the way you incorporate business with pleasure. So long for now, supper is being served.

Solar
You are quite welcome.

You say you just got a new box of Dona Ines? In my humble opinion, that is one of two very decent Thompson products I've enjoyed (the other being Romanticos). I am sorry to say I find most other Thompson brands pretty average... or worse.

If you are experimenting with different brands to find some favorites, go to the JRCigars link and look up their 5-pack specials. You get 5 cigars for the price of 3 plus shipping; and most of these offers are for really good brands. That's how I discovered a lot of my favorites.

Also, for a really good mild to medium bodied Honduran smoke with a lot of flavor, there is an obscure brand only available from Finck Cigars (www.finckcigarcompany.com) called "Charles the Great". These aren't super expensive but not cheap either. You'll find them to be very well constructed. My favorite size is the Barcelona (a 6 x 50 toro). They have a nice sampler pack of all the sizes, which is how I found my favorite. They also sell these in 5-packs.

Anyway, as you can tell, I always like to "talk" cigars... it has become a fun & interesting hobby as well as a great stess reliever! I only wish I lived in a day when cigar smokers could smoke darn near everywhere and weren't considered pariahs!!!

Primus54
Thanks, those are great tips.
You're right about Thompsons, they tend not to be consistent in their roll.
I have too many fall apart, or run.

Hey and the crackers and butter really worked great.

Yes it is a great stress reliever, especially when the trolls come out in force. ( :

Thanks again.

The #8
is awesome. I also enjoy the Te-amo Anniversario Torpedoes when they are available.

If you can, try the La Gloria Cubano torpedoes. Expensive but smokable down to the stub!

Cigars
I am guessing you have yet to try the Oliva Masterblend 3. This is an incredible smoke. It is full bodied and strong (much more so than the Masterblend 1 and 2). It is a little hard to find, but well worth the hunt. It reminds me a lot of the Padron 40th anniversary....but 1/3 of the price.

WOW! Prof. Hunts and Enjoys Stogies...
JP,

That's why the bedwetting liberal professors hate him.

Not to mention that he exposes their inherent stupidity at every turn!

Gunny,
Roger that on the La Gloria. My fingers were getting warm before that cigar got bitter. Marvelous....
But I smoke most of my cigars on the golf course and won't spend the bucks on a fine stogie that the wind will eat. A Baccarat Churchill natural usually works.

MarineDad
One of my troops went home on leave to Guatemala and I drove him to and picked him up at the airport in Naha. My reward was a box of Cuban Cohiba's that his dad had gotten from a friend of his. Distributed a few to buds...a very few!

Awesome to sit in the club, drinking a few shooters on Friday, and the smell of Cuban tobacco in the air!

i smoke whatever is cheap
Mark Twain claimed that his favorite cigars were the ones that made other people ill, so people wouldn't bum smokes off him. I used to smoke the cheapo maduros you could buy in a bag of 25 for $5. They would drive people crazy. God knows what they were stuffed with, probably dog hair, but they smoked like newspapers and would tear you up pretty bad. But a bag of 25 would last me two weeks (almost).

A favored pastime
Had a chance to share cigars and brandy with my Marine over Christmas--probably the last one for a while.

What did Lincoln smoke?
..

GunnyG
La Gloria Cubana torpedoes? Natural or maduro wrapper?

The La Gloria Cubana Serie R maduro is heaven on earth... and potent!... and the Wavell is always a consistent fine one if you are short on time.

Aaahhh... life's pleasures!

What a bunch of pansies!
Could always tell when Police Captain Hoban had come into the apartment building from the stench of the nickel WhiteOwls;they were only fit for real men.

What did Lincoln smoke?
Did you mean Monica "Lincoln" Lewinski???? Didn't she smoke Clinton's great big cigar!!!???!!!

I can assume this is Liberal Free Zone... We are talking smoking God's gift Tobacco and also Firing our Thundersticks! Liberals Look Away! There's nothing for you to see here! Only Great Americans Talking to each other about toking on fine tobacco.

Adams Keep Up the Good Work!
