Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In today’s column, I have to make a pretty embarrassing confession. It seems I may have told a little white lie to one of my liberal hate mailers – one that may have put him in a very difficult position. But, hopefully, the lie will be justified by the lesson it teaches Israel about the need for a disproportionate response to Hezbollah.

I first came into contact with the aforementioned hate mailer after he saw one of my speeches on national television. The man – I use that term loosely – was so upset that he threatened to drive all the way down from New York to “set me straight” for some of the perceived anti-liberal remarks I made during that speech.

After calling me a word that is quite derogatory towards women – and most often used by feminist professors – he decided to challenge me to a fistfight. Rather than waiting to hear my answer to the challenge, he went ahead and announced the date and time he would arrive at my office at UNC-Wilmington to “kick my (expletive).”

So, naturally, I wrote back to beg and plead with the man so he wouldn’t actually come to my office to fight me. Instead, I gave him directions to my house so I could fight him there.

And here’s where the little lie comes into play. Rather than giving the man my real home address, I gave him the address of a crack house I helped bust – it was about nine years ago - together with a friend in the vice and narcotics unit. I knew that the homeowner began dealing crack again – years after eighteen people were busted smoking it there - because I still have sources in the neighborhood.

I also know that the guys who live there hate white people like the guy who wanted to fight me. What I don’t know is exactly what went down when the poor white bastard knocked on the door of that crack house wanting to fight someone. I only know I never heard from him again.

The little lie I told that liberal honky was an illustration of my philosophy regarding self-defense. Whenever you are uncertain whether you are entering a conflict with the ability to offer a disproportionate response, do everything you can reduce that uncertainty. Sometimes, that may involve telling a little white lie – or a big black lie in this case.

My philosophy came in handy again after another liberal – this time from California - got mad at another of my speeches broadcast on national television. She then called to tell me she was angry because of my opposition to overly broad and vague “harassment” codes that restrict (usually selectively) free speech on college campuses. So she told me she was going to find my home phone number and residential address to harass me constantly until I stopped challenging the harassment codes.

That’s when I got the www.DrAdams.org private investigators involved (several of them are former military intelligence officers). We traced the phone call, found her name, hometown, residential address, home phone number, work address, work phone number, supervisor’s work phone number, office fax number, husband’s work phone number, and, finally, the residential addresses and home phone numbers of all her living relatives. And it really didn’t take very long, either.

After laying the groundwork, I called the angry liberal and explained (to her voice mail) that she had made a very serious mistake by choosing the wrong cowboy to (expletive) with. I didn’t tell her that all her personal information was about to go out on the internet - starting with my next DrAdams.org newsletter. But I did let her know she was about to face a wildly disproportionate response to the petty harassment she had promised me.

So before I had to unleash the fury of my internet militia group I got a nice letter from that woman in the great State of California. After saying that she and her husband were now fearful for their safety - and “should have expected (my) angry outburst” – she offered an apology. And, then, she said she wished to have “no further communication” with me in the future.

And, so, a peace settlement was established within 48 hours. But it was not established through a process of negotiation. It was established through fear, military readiness, and an uncompromising desire to offer the most disproportionate response possible under the circumstances.

This whole discussion reminds me of a leftist student who once asked me whether it was “fair” that we should stockpile nuclear weapons and demand that Iran stop seeking even a single short-range nuclear missile. “The answer is no,” I told him. “I don’t care about fairness. I care about killing Muslim terrorists.”

Indeed, the whole point of war is to kill as many enemy soldiers as possible while losing as few of your own soldiers as possible – in other words, to be as “disproportionate” as you can. It is better to live with that understanding than to die without it.

why
Why must the "winner" pay for the mess. I suggest after our next win, we turn the rubble over to Disney Enterprises, and have them use it as backdrop for a theme park dedicated to to "monumental stupoidity" of the Islamo-fascist tyrants. cuz the winner is in controll and if the winner wants to keep control he has to win the peace, which involes lots of building.

Brilliant
That was awesome Mike. You gotta keep up stuff like this. I'm still laughing at the idiot woman.

Re: The Taming of the Jew
"Anyhoo --- keep up the revenge, Christian Mikee. It's great entertainment."

No, not revenge - it was a reckoning!

reckoning, n a bill for an amount due.

Simple! Ask the IDF to help!

unguided bombs
yes civilian homes were considered legitamate targets druing WWII this was many due to the fact that factory workers lived close to where they worked. now days we can destory one particlar building and leave the surrounding block untouched with the possible exception of a few windows.

The "carpet bombing" is a ligitament stratagy but very expesive as usually the winner has to pay for the mess as they now own all the losers stuff.

this is all moot now as isreal was pushed into a stupid cease fire with hezbalah who will use this time to win the hearts and minds of the people in southern lebanon.

movwater
i personally do not think that many of the civilians in south lebinan know who the hezbalah fighters are. If we cant tell how can they?"

Perhaps if your neighbor sports a Kalashnikov and RPG when he goes to work in the morning shouting "God is great" and "Death to the Infidels", he might be a "Hezbollah".

ok so if they are that easy to spot how do the lebonse get them to go away. Do they get in there face and demand they leave or ask politely and hope they just go on there own. either they cant tell or there property is being held hostage either way not so easy for them to get away.

Drew
Thant you for the intelligent response to my contention. I still believe that Dr. Adams is deliberately inviting negative attention, so risk management becomes somewhat problomatic. I freely admit that it is merely an OPINION and is based upon what I see in his writing. I have not met the man, nor do I intend to.
I have seen examples of disproportionate response go awry where I grew up in California. Giving a "look" to the wrong person could get you killed, and still can in many cities. In civil society where disproportionate responses can and do get out of control, it seems highly irresponsible to actually encourage this behavior. It's even more surprising coming from a person who is supposed to be a law enforcement proffesional.
Example: Concerning the persons who have made malicious comments towards me in this forum or in person...should I threaten to retaliate verbally in multiple forums and post their comments on left wing blogs? Try to track them down in reality and vandalize personal property? Go even further? All of these are possible disproportionate responses, and I believe they all represent a break in civil society and create a climate of retaliation. THAT IS WHY YOU CAN'T COMPARE THIS TO ISRAEL! THIS IS NOT A LIFE AND DEATH SITUATION!! It's minor harassement from a woman in California (for which I would tell her to get a lawyer) or schoolyard bullying on the web, which is meaningless. If I am physically threatened, then my choice to use a firearm in self defense IS NOT disproportionate. Israel's response to Hezbollah was justifiable AND proportionate as well. As for the guy who wanted to find Dr Adams, why tell him anything or give him encouragement at all? Tell him nothing except "Find a shrink" and inform the police that this nutcase called. If he actually found the place, then Dr. Adams is entitled to use his favorite weapon of choice, and there is one less idiot contributing to the gene pool. That's my thought.

The Taming of the Jew
BRAVO,Mike! Thanks a million for giving us some good pointers re: how to deal with those ultra-liberal nuts out there who can "dish it out", but "can't take it". They've been so brainwashed by their "leaders", to parrot that which they've been told to say, they can't do anything BUT back down and apologize when they're challenged by an intelligent individual such as you, who understands what's going on in this world, and thinks for yourself! And by the way, it doesn't matter whether the caller from California had been a man or a woman, she reacted EXACTLY the way all ignorant liberals do.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

By the way, we need YOU in the U. S. Senate, to show the liberals there, as well as the spineless RINO'S, how to represent the MAJORITY of us Americans! It's high time they stopped representing only 14% of the population...those being the lamestream media, the loud-mouthed segment of the "entertainment industry", and others in the anti-God, anti-America group.

Best regards,
Hank

typical right wingnut
Too big of a coward to serve your country in the armed services, but you pretend to be tough by going after some lady in California. You're a real patriot.

not human sheilds
i personally do not think that many of the civilians in south lebinan know who the hezbalah fighters are. If we cant tell how can they?

"Hundreds of thousands civilians were killed in Germany and Japan during WWII late in the war because their soldiers started hiding among them. Look how well that turned out. We don't speak German or Japanese in this country." The reason hundreds of thousands of civilians were killed was the mere fact that we did not have precison weapons to take out what we were targeting. During WWII in order to make sure we got what we wanted thousands of bombs were dropped in what is know as carpet bombing.

Why he's right:
For those who mentioned the idea that it's all fun and games until someone's house gets hit by a Molatov Cocktail, let me ask you something? If Dr. Adams had not gone ahead with these disproportionate responses, do you think he'd be more or less likely to become a victim? These people obviously had self-preservation instincts stronger than their feelings against Dr. Adams.
If you say you'll find where I live, the best deterrent is finding out where you live first. If you say you're going to come and hurt or kill me, I send you someplace where you're more likely to be hurt, and I'm more likely to be safe. If the woman's name, address, place of employment, and threats were made public, she had a lot more to lose than she did harassing Dr. Adams in a semi-anonymous fashion. If the man came to cause harm to Dr. Adams and found himself in a place he was more likely to be harmed, he'll think twice about doing it again. On the other hand, he could have attempted to verify the information or make an office visit as he'd previously planned. At which point, the ante has been upped, since he then moves from harrassment and threats to actual violence. But he knows that Dr. Adams was willing to lie to him, so he may think twice before trying anything.
On the other hand, if Dr. Adams had responded to harrassment with harrassment or gone ahead with the fistfight, he opens himself up to a lot more harm. It's a matter of risk management, and he has managed well.

You gotta love posts like these!

When asked his Cold War plan, Ronald Reagan responded: "Simple, we win and they lose."

The tactics were complex, but the strategic objective was not.

The war on terror should be fought with that "simple" message in mind...

Another reminder from our "educated" Left that common sense just ain't so common anymore!

Can't quite see it
What CelticDragon and a couple of ohters are upset about, that is.

SEQUENCE A:
1. Dr. Adams makes a speech on national TV.
2. Some left wingnut threatens him with bodily harm.
3. Dr. Adams sent the wingnut a false address to come to if he really wants to kick Adams's alpha sigma sigma.

The ONLY way the wingnut could come to harm is if he acted on his threat.

SEQUENCE B:
1. Dr. Adams makes a speech on national TV.
2. Some left wingnut threatens him with harassment at his home number & address. (Under NC law, this is malicious mischief: "The mens-rea requirement of malicious mischief is a property-endangering state of mind, without justification, excuse or mitigation." See NC v Sexton.)
3. Dr. Admams learns all her contact info, then warns her that any malicious mischief will be dealt with. (As nearly as I can research, there is no law against posting the listed info for public use.)
4. She backs down.

Where exactly is the problem here?

Hey, The Old Coot...
....has come up with a "Final Solution."

" how many hezbollah have been killed .
. . compared to lebanese civilians?"
Well, it seems we'll never know the actual answer to this. I was just listening to ABC radio news on the hour, ( between Limbaugh segments ), and they quote casualties for the Israelis and the Lebanese civilians, with absolutely NO numbers for Hezbollah! To hear them tell it, somehow the Israelis NEVER hit actual combatants, only civilians. But so far the ratio's not bad, about 7 to 1. Now there's this stupid cease fire and wait for international forces, . . I wish the Israelis would thumb their noses at the UN and finish what they need to do! What will the UN do to them, write a couple of dozen resolutions? If the Arabs and Persians can ignore UN resolutions with impugnity, why should anyone hold the Israelis to their word? For that matter, the way the UN treats Israel, they would be better off resigning the UN with honor intact, . . and then ignoring any further utterances of that worthless entity, entirely. They should act on the sovereignty bestowed them back in the forties, but reject any further obligations to the bestowers!

Taming the Jew
I think I have finally come up with a solution, not only to the situation in Lebanon, but the whole Muslim problem, and the war on terror.

Pull all of our troops outta there, and the Isrealis pull all theirs out, too.
The purpose is, " no friendly fire casualties" when we nuke them all. About a dozen mushroom clouds in selected spots should send the message, and you can bet it would be received, loud an clear.

A disproportionate response, you can bet your sweet assets it would be, but it worked in WWII.

Bill Mangum

Movwater
Sometimes that works, but it can backfire also. The British experience in Northern Ireland comes to mind, where repressive retaliatory measures only hardened popular opinion and created more recruits for the P.I.R.A and Sinn Fein. I would think that a carrot and stick balance has to be achieved. Your thoughts?

TIME IS A LUXURY
That we do not have. Every day that clicks by without the United States doing something to make sure that we are staying on top of the war on terror, is a day that brings the world a step closer to some type of destruction from a group of diaper heads who when engaging in war hide behind women and children and believe that the way to fight a war is to strap on a vest packed with explosives and go shopping.
Heads Need To Roll LLC

MikeScott
How sadly pathetic. Tht's all you can do? At what point have I ever stooped so low as to actually call you names? Sad, really.
In point of fact, I contend that Dr, Adams makes statements with the intention of provoking responses such as what the woman from California did. That is why i disagree with his attempt to compare himself to Israel. This has nothing to do with my personal feelings about Dr, Adams' views on GLBT people. I wrote and supported his column about Jonbeney Ramsey, and I invite you to go back and look. If I agree with him, I say so (as I have done). If I disagree, then I say so. That goes for any contributer to TH. I won't play a sycophant for anybody.

Personal Attacks
When you post personal attacks, it isn't cute! No matter what they're about or who they are directed at, they really take away from the discussion and the meaningful comments and dialogue on the subject.

and another thing
Celtic Dragon, you say Adams instigated this whole thing? He got a threat of harassment from a total stranger. Bottom line, you have a beef against Adams because he is willing to state the obvious: Transgendered folks a whacked (in a manner of speaking). Please, self-absorbed nutless wonder, let us talk about something else.

Oh I'm sorry...
I thought this was a forum for comments from anybody. I didn't realize that it was meant to be a feel-good therapy session for Dr. Adams. My bad.

please get off this comment page
Celtic Dragon, you CONSTANTLY log on to tell us how Dr. Adams' columns are ridiculous. PLEASE quit bitching and go somewhere else.

GunnyG
Yer a real laugh riot. Try harder.

MikeScott
I evaluate the actions of Dr Adams as childish and ridiculous. Instead of showing me how I am wrong, you merely try to tell me that I am being ridiculous for being transgendered, which was never even at issue here. Moreover, your means of delivering this "rebuttal" never rose above the level of schoolyard taunting. Try to focus, and tell me why I am wrong.
I am personally a gun owner and NRA supporter. I own two assault rifles and a .30-06 hunting rifle, yet I do not taunt, harass or otherwise advertise myself to my neighbors and try to provoke a response. Dr. Adams makes deliberately provacative statements and boasts afterwards of his ability to face people down afterwards.
Israel doesn't provoke anyone. I certainly try not to provoke anyone. Israel will use whatever means are necessary to defend itself, without having to yell about it to everyone around. I am more then capable of dealing with someone who makes the mistake of coming into MY house, but I don't habitually brag to my neighbors-or any of you for that matter-that I own several powerful weapons and was trained to use them in the army.
So now you know, and I'm not going to keep reminding you. Dr. Adams has to keep reminding us, and reminding us, and so on. That is why I think he actually goes out of his way to find a confrontation. It looks ridiculous. Tell me why I'm wrong. Also, note that I took a hint from you, MikeScott, and was no longer bringing up being trans. You brought it up to attack me. Makes you a bit of a hypocrite.
To anyone interested, I make some evaluation of the new Israeli submarines as a possible nuclear platform in my blog artcle "Swimming With Dolphins". Click on my name above.

The Chicago Way
The above from J.R.

I'm 64 and from Chicago, and that's exactly how I was raised as well, and raised my 4 kids (2 of each) with the same philosophy. While still in grammar school, I told them that if someone hit or pushed them, they should "pummel" the guy - or girl.

They did! And never got bothered by that person again. Disproportionate responses at work.

And if you can't do it yourself, there's a "Bubba" in every city in the world.

you had big balls!
Wow! You call Adams "ridiculous" and "childish" and now you say I'm engaging in personal attacks? You really have big balls. Or used to.

MLP
Actually, I don't play D & D. I am a Celtic harpist and I just happen to like dragons.

GunnyG
I don't recall bringing you into this.

Mikescott
You seem fixated on something that isn't germane here. Changing the subject and making personal attacks and schoolyard bully slurs shows poor ability to think and defend a position. Your unseemly fixation on my being transgendered is disturbing and appears obsessive.

once again
Mike nails it. I say we we just flatten those that wish to kill us. You are either for freedom or against it.....choose a side and fight with all your might.

ROBIN, AND OTHERS, READ A HISTORY BOOK
cynewulf: Are you sure those numbers are right? I thought it was supposed to be 4000:1.

Hundreds of thousands civilians were killed in Germany and Japan during WWII late in the war because their soldiers started hiding among them. Look how well that turned out. We don't speak German or Japanese in this country.

There is no such thing as "fighting fair". If the civilian population in the middle east is hiding and/or helping terrorists then killing a few of them will get the message across. You quit helping our enemies, we will quit killing you. Life is pretty simple if you keep it that way.

Dr. Adams is right on the money. I feel the same way as he does. Nobody, and I mean nobody, messes with my family or me. If they want a piece of me I will invite them to give me a time and place and I WILL meet them. My "proportional response" will be "never bring a knife to a gun fight". I will rain all over your parade.

God bless America and our troops that would protect us if our elected leaders would just quit listening to the liberal pantywaists and let them do it.

Machiavelli's answer

ones. The injury, therefore, that we do to a man must be such that we need not
fear his vengeance."

Disproportionate
The truth is simply that all war, under all circumstances, kills civilians. Therefore, the only humane way to fight a war is to end it as quickly as possible. Since history teaches us that "negotiation" only postpones fighting and never ends the conflict, ending a war quickly means one side destroys the others capacity to fight as quickly as possible. This inherently means disproportionate fighting. One side wins, one side loses, end of hostility.
An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. A head for an eye brings peace.

By the way, celtic-dragon, is that your D&D name? Sweet.

from a different Robyn
Dr. Adams is absolutely right. The game IS to make it far more painful for the enemy to wage war against YOU. Personally, I think the Israelis should ramp UP their efforts. This so-called "cease fire" being imposed on the Israelis may just mean a nuke in TelAviv next time.

Does anyone else want to slap Greg Palkot...?

I wonder what will happen if
Dr Adams actually finds someone who isn't afraid to escalate in his one his little games? After all, insulting liberals (amusing as it sometimes is!) and provoking a response is a game of sorts. It wouldn't be as funny if someone threw a firebomb at his house or office. In fact, it would be alarming , dangerous and criminal. But that is a sort of logical extension to one of his "disproportionate" response exchanges.
If Dr. Adams wants to swagger and make provacative statements, then that's his thing. He seems to get something out of it. Israel doesn't have a choice about this, and it certainly is no game. Far from making provacative statements and actions, Israel has made every attempt to be conciliatory, with varying degrees of success. Israel most certainly does NOT go out of its way to brag about its nuclear arsenal or how it can vaporize Mecca etc etc etc.
Maybe that is what I find so ridiculous and childish about Dr. Adams. He tries to be offensive, gets offended in turn, and brags about the experience afterward. In contrast,Israel is fighting for its' very survival. Its policies are calculated for the beneifit of its citizenry. Dr. Adams is just fighting to prove he has a bigger...well, something.

Fairness in armament
Regarding the leftist student that asked Adams if it was fair for us to have loads of nuclear weapons and not allow Iran to have even one: I'm willing to bet that this leftist student doesn't think it would be unfair for our police to be fully armed while our citizens are not allowed to have any weapons for self-defense.

Robin
It doesn't matter how many "innocent" Lebanese civilians were killed. You're right, the terrorists intentionally hide in civilian populations under the assumption that they can fire as many rockets as they want, and none will be coming their way for fear of harming those "innocents" they hide amonst. When the rockets start raining down, though, and those "innocent" civilians start dying, though, eventually those "innocents" will wise up and refuse to let the terrorists use them as human shields.

Of course, the biggest difference between the Israeli army and the terrorists is that when an Israeli rocket results in the death of "innocent" civilians, the Israelis call that "collateral damage". When a terrorist rocket results in the death of innocent civilians, the terrorists call that "direct hit".

The Israelis aren't murdering innocent civilian. The terrorists are, by firing their rockets and hiding among the civilians.

This "Proportionate Response" Business
. . . has always amused me, particularly so with respect to this conflict. So let's do a little mental exercise:

Proposal: Rather than responding to Hezbollah's aggression with precision munitions, ground troops and armor, the IDF instead starts lobbing unguided short-range conventional missiles in the general direction of heavy concentrations of civilians.

Conclusion: Overwhelming media, diplomatic, and extremist Muslim response would be (this portion left as an exercise for the class).

Robin writes: the problem is.....that all the wrong people are being killed.

Could you point out who should be killed who shouldn't? Perhaps you could arm yourself with a laser pointer to guide missiles in to hezbollah positions and away from the "wrong" people. Here’s how you can apply for that job:

http://www.mahal2000.com/

Robin
I can't tell if you are being foolish in general, or using foolish logic to make a good point.

You wrote:

"how many hezbollah have been killed compared to lebanese civilians?"

The problem is, you can't tell; Hezbollah fighters wear neither uniforms, nor big red labels "Warning: HEZBOLLAH FIGHTER HERE," sothey tend to look just like innocent Lebanese civilians. And shock of shocks, the folks on scene tend not to try to helpfully make the distinction clear.

So yeah. Innocent civs have to die in order to kill all the Hezbollah. Tough old world isn't it?

"If we are to throw political correctness out of the window and follow your approach, then we must kill or get rid of all the muslims basically everywhere, but especially in the usa."

To quote the tough old drill sergeant from the WONDERFUL Civil War movie "Glory": "Now yer LEARNIN', boyo!"

More specifically: It has been VERY conservatively estimated that 10% of the Muslim world sympathizes heavily with the Islamst/Islamofascist/Jihadist mindset. That's 10% of around 1 billion people.

So yeah. We might need to kill somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 million Muslims before things settle down.

"Why are we content to allow muslims in the usa?"

Little thing called the Constitution of the Unites States of America. Nothing big.

*rolls eyes*

Next time, how about you make some arguments that are not only informed by logic, but logically connected TO each other?

Disproportionate Response
It seems that whenever the 'common sense' side of ANY issue or situation involving the U.N. starts to look successful, the fools on the Left, as led, in this case by "Kofi (Grab what you can before you're dumped) Annan will bleat about the children and civilians, and then try to stop the fighting. With the 'doctored' photos, and the consistently leftward bias of the media, the rule of thumb should be: If the U.N. wants to stop it, it should probably continue. Besides, there are NO civilians in South Lebanon. If you live in a den of snakes, eat their 'kill', encourage their presence, help carry their ammunition, and stay fat, happy, and silent about their presence, you're one of them. I say to the Israelis: "Blast away till they're all under the rubble. No war has EVER been negotiated to a true peace. One side has to lose, and the most fanatic on that side have to die, or the embers just flare up later, after the fanatics are restocked and strengthened. But, I have no faith that any of the powers that be will listen. They're safe an warm thousands of miles away. Nothing will change until the mental illness that is named "Liberalism" is medically cured.

The Taming of the Jew
As the late great Gen. G. S. Patton said:
" No poor b------- ever won a war by dying for
his country, you win a war by making the other
poor b------ die for his country."

WWII and the disproportional response...
As I understand it, the main reason the Japanese bombed our fleet at Pearl Harbor was because of our economic embargo of Japan, brought about because of Japan's invasion of Mainland China. The Japanese mistakenly believed that by bombing Pearl Harbor they’d weaken us militarily and somehow bring us back to the negotiating table.

We did finally end up at the negotiating table with the Japanese, but that was four years later on the deck of the Missouri, when we negotiated their unconditional surrender--after we had “disproportionately” devastated their ability to make war and equally devastated their homeland. We inflicted the same “disproportionate” devastation on the Hitler’s Nazi Germany.

I think it worked fairly well. To this day (some 60 years later) we’ve had no military trouble from either of those nations. Maybe it’s time the Islamic fascists received a similar disproportionate response.

Okay, I know, that’s just wishful thinking. But, I'm ever hopeful.

Robin doesn't know...
..how many of Hezbollah's minions have been killed. Or for that matter, it would be wise to wait on the count until this affair is ended.

About the civilian deaths, remember the adage about lying down with dogs. You get fleas.

From this vantage point, it looks like Olmert spent too much time studying diplomatic policy at the feet of Madelaine Albright.

True tale?
If Dr. Adams' story is true, I say "more power to you, and God bless you". The disproportionate response of Dr. Adams and his friends to PC goons was hillarious! LOL funny!

Appropriate Lies
Well done, Prof. Adams. As I tell my kids, always tell the truth except when someone's safety is in danger. Then, telling a lie isn't just okay; it's mandatory.

What is "proportionate response"
"Proportionate response" is a tactic in Game Theory that was developed by PhD types for negotiating with the Russians. It has also been taught for high stakes business negotiations and it works all the time when you are dealing with a rational person who WANTS to negotiate for mutual gain.

You ask for something dumb, I will ask for something dumb, you raise the stakes, I raise the stakes, you throw me a goodie, I will throw you a goodie. Your opponent figures out they can feel in control because you will mimic their last move.

For example, The Russians loved their kids more than they hated us. MAD worked. The Muslims hate us more than they love their kids. Therefore, Proportional response will never work.

The only response is disproportionate response. Wipe them out without mercy, burn their symbols to the ground and kill the terrorists their suppliers and everyone they know.

Who wants to screw with somebody willing to to that? Answer: No one

Problem solved.

the problem is..
...that all the wrong people are being killed. how many hezbollah have been killed compared to lebanese civilians? if we are to throw political correctness out of the window and follow your approach, then we must kill or get rid of all the muslims basically everywhere, but especially in the usa. why are we content to allow muslims in the usa? your approach is basically all or nothing, black or white with no gray. being politically correct used to mean showing a little respect for someone you didn't agree with by not calling them a name to their face.

I remember
"It was established through fear, military readiness, and an uncompromising desire to offer the most disproportionate response possible under the circumstances."

I recall the hick version of this statement being "Mess with the bull and you get the horns".

Conrad
I must disagree with something you said. You stated that "Political correctness does not understand fear...", but I think that at heart PC is all about fear. It is not a fear of physical reprisal but of having your name and reputation sullied or destroyed for not toeing the PC line. The PC/lib crowd is deeply authoritarian and we all know that that philosophy can only work with fear as a backdrop.

Btw, check out my blog later today (around noon EST) for an entry about the left's authoritarian bent.

The Chicago Way
As much as it pains me to reference anything related to Hollywood, a scene from the movie Untouchables seems appropos to this discussion. Sean Connery's character is explaining to Kevin Costner's Eliot Ness, among other things, that "...if they send one of yours to the hospital, you send one of theirs to the morgue! THAT'S the Chicago way!" I would propose that, instead of using the politically correct "disproportionate response", the phrase "the Chicago Way" be used...kinda sounds more American and less United Nationsesque to me.

I'm glad somebody gets it.
Oderint, dum metuant.

There's no other way to deal with haters.

bully-culture
A bully is the only person decrying "disproportionate response."

They are specifically interested in defeating the other guy's ability or willingness to knock the snot out of the bully. A bully's goal is to tread upon our freedoms and enslave us.

Thugs vs Thinkers: In the long run the thinkers win out over the thugs. In the short run the thugs do a lot of damage.

Finally
I am so glad someone else realizes what a powerful tool fear can be. Political correctness does not understand fear, but a terrorist will if a few hundred thousand of his buddies have been annihilated in the last day of senseless fighting.

I'm not surprised...
...it was some aggressively ignorant feminist puke from CA. This state is loaded with female fools who think their liberal world view confers upon them the wisdom of the ages, and frees them from the study of an historical or familiarity with any other perspective for that matter.

It works
And the beauty of it is, you don't have to do it more than about three or four times before word gets around (bad guys tend to talk to each other) that you are not to be trifled with and they pick on somebody else. A website I used to belong to had a resident computer expert who had achieved modest fame for being part of a worldwide hacker organization memorialized in both a book and a PBS documentary, and when we had someoneone sign on and begin serious actionable harrassment, this guy would assemble a dossier on the troublemaker and e-mail it to him, with the suggestion that if the bad behaviour did not cease immediately, the dossier would be passed along to his boss, his mother or his school headmaster with the suggestion that the adult in charge might want to know for what purpose his equipment was being used. The immediate result would be an apology and the disappearance of the troublemaking. People who post on the internet have a touching faith that they are anonymous...and people who make public challenges are comforted by the touching faith that 'you will understand they don't mean it.'

Immensely entertaining and as always
EDUCATIONAL.

Well said!
I don't know where people got the idea that war is a schoolyard game where both sides are equal. Hezbollah was firing rockets indiscriminately into Israel. When somebody does things like that, you don't worry whether your response should be proportionate if you want the rockets to stop.

I hope Olmert gets booted posthaste and the IDF is ready when the new Unifil force fails to prevent more terrorist attacks.

The hypocrisy of lefty "proportionality"
I find it humorous and more than a little sad that, in a day and age where feminazis on university campuses can destroy careers and lives through vicious whisper campaigns simply because a colleague has the temerity to question their "morally unassailable" position on gender/social issues (as a grad student, I saw it personally), so many of the same individuals (many of whom are avowedly anti-semitic as well as being anti-male) can nonetheless turn around and feign outrage at Israel's "disproportionate" response to the bloody actions of amoral terrorists. Israel is engaged in an existentialist struggle with people who want every last Jew dead - yet the left in America and in Europe keeps blaming the Jews for exacerbating the situation by having the audacity to fight back.

And people wonder why in the world the holocaust was allowed to happen (interestingly, given that we're all into "moral equivalence" on the left, do you think anyone has told them that those forty-or-so million abortions in this country since 1973 constitute a number roughly seven times as large as the number of innocents killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust?) Hmmmm.......

I thought...
...Dr. Adams was packing more heat than David Koresh. He should have invited that yankee on over.

"..point of war is to kill as many enemy soldiers as possible while losing as few of your own soldiers.." Especially when your enemies have no regard for their own lives or those of their families. One more reason to drop the "Big One."

What's the problem w/being proportionate
as long as we keep a fixed ratio (e.g. 2,000:1)?
