Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

"We spent a fortune to elect Barack Obama -- $60.7 million to be exact -- and we're proud of it," boasted Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, to the Las Vegas Sun this week. The behemoth labor organization's leadership is getting its money's worth. Whether rank-and-file workers and ordinary taxpayers are profiting from this ultimate campaign pay-for-play scheme is another matter entirely.

The two-million-member union, which represents both government and private service employees, proudly claimed that its workers "knocked on 1.87 million doors, made 4.4 million phone calls … and sent more than 2.5 million pieces of mail in support of Obama." It dispatched SEIU leaders to seven states in the final weekend before the election to get out the vote for Obama and other Democrats.

Through a series of local chapter takeovers and bully campaigns to destroy the reputation of executives who refuse to submit to their will, Stern and his scandal-plagued lieutenants have consolidated low-skill service workers to create a 21st century labor empire. The ubiquitous Stern now enjoys a prominent seat at the table of every major policy discussion at the White House, including economic recovery and health care radicalization.

Obama champions the SEIU's top legislative priorities: expansive government health care (paid for with regressive sin taxes) and the "Employee Free Choice Act" to do away with private-ballot union elections in the workplace. He has SEIU-blessed bureaucrats installed in every corner of his administration to carry out the agenda.

The SEIU scored not one but two Cabinet appointees: Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis. The SEIU pitched in with maximum donations to Solis' first congressional campaign and lent her nearly 300 canvassers and ground troops. "I wouldn't be here, were it not for my friends in the labor movement," she gushed. Indeed, over four terms in Congress, Solis has pocketed more than $900,000 in union campaign contributions.

Former SEIU chief lobbyist Patrick Gaspard served as the Obama campaign's national political director and transition deputy director of personnel. During the 2004 election cycle, he led the George Soros-funded group America Coming Together (ACT) as national field director. SEIU poured $23 million of workers' dues money into ACT in its failed attempt to put Democratic Sen. John Kerry in the White House. Under Gaspard's tenure at ACT, the get-out-the-vote group employed convicted felons as canvassers and committed campaign finance violations that led to a $775,000 fine by the Federal Election Commission. Gaspard was appointed White House political director shortly after Election Day 2008.

SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger was appointed to the president's Economic Recovery Advisory Board to provide advice on "boosting the sagging U.S. economy" (translation: imposing new employment regulations on companies and expanding union membership rolls).

Within two weeks of moving into the White House, Obama signed a series of executive orders championed by union bosses. The new rules authorized sweeping powers for the labor secretary that essentially blackball nonunion contractors targeted by labor organizers and blacklist nonunion employees in the private sector from working on taxpayer-funded projects. Such regulatory favoritism limits freedom in the workplace and raises the cost of doing business.

Another measure immediately adopted by Obama requires that when a government service contract runs out and there's a new contract to perform the same services at the same location, the new contractor must retain the old workers. Mickey Kaus of the left-leaning Slate magazine dubbed the move the "Labor Payoff of the Day."

The payoffs keep coming. Last week Obama slashed the Labor Department's funding to investigate union corruption -- a welcome move for Stern, who has seen three of his handpicked deputies resign in 2008-2009 over financial scandals involving cronyism, nepotism and embezzlement.

California officials also reported last week that the Obama White House gave the SEIU an unprecedented role in negotiations over federal stimulus funds. According to the Los Angeles Times, the union lobbied the feds to withhold nearly $7 billion in stimulus money from California unless it revoked a wage cut for unionized health care workers -- which had already been approved by Democratic lawmakers as part of a budget deal forged in February. Top SEIU officials participated in a conference call last month on the issue; the Obama White House backs the union demands.

SEIU's enforcers have set aside $10 million to un-elect any of its political beneficiaries who abandon their pledges to do the union's legislative bidding. The campaign money was raised by slapping an extra $6-per-member fee on top of regular dues payments -- and funneled straight to the union's political action committee. Meanwhile, after spending a fortune to put Obama in office, the union laid off a third of its D.C. field staff (in violation of its own employment protections, according to the workers) due to … budget troubles.

The laid-off workers are collateral damage in Big Labor's pursuit of power. The only jobs guaranteed by SEIU's merger with Hope and Change, Inc. belong to the brass.

and paid for.

Unfortunately, the rest of us who actually pay taxes, will be paying MUCH more for a very long time. And paying to the CORRUPT people in the SEIU and all of the others in the labor unions. Just take a look at what they have done for us here in California: $21 BILLION and counting even with the highest taxes in the nation, all because Arnold didn't have the guts to say no to the unions...very sad!

From the same union folks who
brought us the wonders of bankrupt Detroit. Did you say it was Andy or Howard Stern?

Malkin's distortions

As usual, Malkin specializes in distorting events and motives in order to hurt the little guy, in this case the workers (which she refers to as Big Labor). Unions have very little power in this country, in contrast to the paranoid dishonesty coming from the likes of Malkin. Big Business is what it's all about, as any one should realize given the current financial meltdown. Malkin is just a cheerleader for the rich.

I just don't understand...
...what the distrust is over labor unions?

I think of working people as the heart of America. Don't they deserve our respect when they gather and communicate as a group?

I wholeheartedly agree with Dr Douglas that Big Business is what we should be talking about, what a journalist like Malkin should spend her time covering.

We ought to have strong labor movements, if this were truly a free country. Maybe even (gasp) a Labor political party.

As it is, we've got the corporations running both sides of the aisle and outrage at even the mention of Big Labor... as though that existed and were a threat to anyone.

Has Big Labor poisoned whole towns like Monsanto? Sold lethal services to the highest bidder like Bechtel? Ruined the fortunes of ordinary people like all these colluding banks?

I should say not. Labor unionization is at the heart of the real American story.

No surprise
It’s getting more and more difficult to be shocked or surprised at the level of incompetence, corruption and audacity in this administration.

However, the brainwashed, rationalizing, zombie-like following by the obamites may be the most disturbing. Obama could be caught on hidden video smoking meth and praying to Allah for the destruction of America...and our resident loons would still show up on here trying to defend him. Sad.

paranoidmystic
Although I disagree with her views on illegal aliens, you need to read Linda Chavez's book, "Betrayal" - it will more than answer your questions about distrust of labor unions....you will never trust them again.

Union Intimidation
"Unions have very little power in this country"

Have you ever been to California?

I am only 24 but I have seen them FIRST HAND intimidate government workers. The union also was emailing government employees at their government email addresses saying that the Republican candidate would privatize their jobs (total lie). I also talked to union employees who supported the Republican candidate who said they could not put a yard sign of support in their lawn in fear of what the union would do to them.

That is the truth.

Honest America no More
I don't think the American people want to know any of this. The people who have been following Obama for the past two years seem to be in some sort of trance and it could easily lead to the destruction of our nation. I shake my head in disbelief because I grew up when we believed in our Constitution and our heritage and would fight anyone who tried to tear it down. What it will take to get back to that I couldn't tell you because people my age are too old to wage the internal war needed to stop what is happening. We have to face the fact that our Congress is behind what is happening or they would be front and center fighting against this takeover. We also know that the mainstream media is also in on it because they are solidly behind Obama and everything he does. I guess this means we are on our own and will have to do what we have always done, fight for our very existance because if we don't, we will be leaving our nation vulnerable to any outside force that chooses to attack while we are at war with ourselves. I am not talking about an internal armed conflict, I am talking about fighting the psychological war that the Liberal faction of my Party has forced on us. We need to call them out every time they try to force their idiology on us and stop this train wreck. Their version of "political correctness" stinks and you can smell it all the way from Washington. No wonder they want to shove the "torture" issue down our throats and have these massive hearings solely to give the public an entertaining show while they carefully take our nation away from us behind closed doors and further their shady and greedy deals. Let's fool them and stop every smoke screen they throw up. They have become a well oiled machine and we need to use even more oil in stopping them, and I am not talking about money, they can print that and are. We have the brains, let's use them.

Excellent column
This is one of Malkin's best. I love the intense research, the many supporting points, and the way she strung the details together, connecting lots of dots. The four-star rating on this piece is not justified, it's a five-star for sure and a valuable piece of information. Everyone ought to read it.

Unionism in America
Is one of the more blatant examples of "absolute power corrupting absolutely".
It has been said that a company gets the union it deserves.
When the company or industry mistreats its workers for long enough, they WILL find a way to organize to combat this.
The problem is, once having been made (essentially) whole, the union uses its new found power to exact REVENGE upon the company by demanding and receiving reparations out of all proportion to the wrongs suffered.
And, once in place, these new found privileges and benefits serve as just the absolute minimum point from which the union negotiates, forcing the company to give until it dies, or moves out of the country.

I have been on both sides of the issue; both as a lower level management employee forced to work unpaid overtime to complete work my technicians could not finish on regular time, and as a worker in union environments, watching slackers receive the same pay as hard workers, and getting not so subtle comments about "taking it easy".
The root of it all is nothing more than the unwillingness of humans in a position of power to treat those under them fairly.
Bob

Dr Douglas says
- "Unions have very little power in this country"

Folks, why do these liberals REFUSE to see what is going on around them?

Tell us about UAW, Douglas? Very little power? Tell us about the NEA, Douglas? Very little power?

If you ain't got it by now, Douglas, you ain't ever gonna get it. Sorry. Go fishing, or something...

Government-Education is KILLING America!
It's bad enough the local government-schools are drugging these people up and dumbing-them-down. But, it's even worse when these people refuse to acknowledge what is going on around them. I have no idea how some of these people got to be so stupid. Read some of these posts!

not just big labor
also bigqueer, bigmuslimworlddomination, bighollywood, bigacornfraudandcorruption, bigwelfarevotebuying, bigfraudulenteducation, bigtriallawyercrooks, and bigkilltheinnocentbabies have spent a fortune to elect the mesiah, and they all expect to be paid in full. rip usa

MELTING POT
The head chef in chief and the crooks in the kitchen are concocting new recipes daily which they will be able to shove down the throats of American taxpayers.
Having discarded (the cookbooks of) our Constitution, Bill of Rights and Rule of Law, they are using a 'melting pot' to mix the ingredients from Socialism, Communism, Marxism, Fascism, Totalitarianism and Progressivism, to remake and rewrite their own menu from which We the People will be forced to eat.
We will NO LONGER BE
NOR will WE HAVE
Our Pledge of Allegiance
To our FLAG
Or To
The REPUBLIC for which it stands, One Nation Under God with Liberty and Justice for All.
We will be marching to UNIONISM, uner a UNION BOSS (not GOD) and terrorized by UNION THUGS.

HONEST AND HARD WORKING
How did the sane become overrun by the insane? How did the majority of Americans loose this battle for decent America. What happened? We didn't have a person running that we really got fired up about. Nope! And we let the country down because we didn't raise up the right leader that could inspire. So the Honest, common sense folks let the inmates take over the asylum, we didn't see it coming.

Folks
Why do you hate to pay a decent days wage for a decent day's work. This is the bottomline: if work does not pay enough to live at least frugally then that job should not exist. Your cheap wages have destroyed the American family

MM distorts as usual
Dr Douglas and paranoidmystic - both excellent posts.

This is no different than big oil, big banks and big business investing in previous administrations (or this one) now is it.

FLYING GOAT
It's alright. The Republicans are gonna be able to run anyone and beat Obama in the 2012 election. Because there has never been a president who so ruthlessly attacked the private sector, as Obama is doing. There has never been a president who has apologized to our nations enemies, as Obama has. There has never been a president who had so many terrorist friends, like Obama does. There has never been a president who has spent(stole) as much money as Obama has. Anyone can beat Obama. Barney the damned Dinosaur could beat Obama. The guys a classless, racist, socialist, arrogant jerk. I love how the media refuses to take pictures of him while he's smoking! How's that for kissing *ss?!

Communists Support Hilda Solis

"First, we have to support the passage of the President's stimulus bill in the Senate.

Second, we have to bloc any Republican efforts to derail the nomination of Hilda Solis, the nominee for the Secretary of Labor. This is the first round in the battle to pass the EFCA. Some may think this is a struggle of only the labor movement. But nothing could be further from the truth. A bigger labor movement in this country would strengthen the struggle on every front. No one expressed this point better than Martin Luther King toward the end of his life.

Third, we have to join others in resisting evictions and foreclosures – not to mention cutbacks and layoffs at the state and city level.

Fourth, the wars of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan have to be brought to a close. As former President Lyndon Johnson realized too late, wars of occupation (in this case Vietnam) can quickly ruin a presidency that has great promise."

Unions are Good?
I've been around a long time and have never witnessed a situation where any two people contributed the same effort or effectiveness on a given job. To promote the idea that people should be paid the same when their contribution is different is a model for socialism and kills incentive. Just ask the person who works hard. Teacher's unions are a perfect example. Merit pay is the way to create incentive. Unions are the model for President Obama's nation and giving them power is a sure path to socialism.

Attacking the messenger
I see no distortion of FACTS here wrightsrong. Follow the money and you'll get to the same place. This is why it is important to vote out every single baffoon that holds office and pass states rights legislation. Get people who have no ties to lobbyists but love their country enough to say what they mean and mean what they say. One party is as guilty as the other and their is NO difference between the two anymore. Stand up for your country and urge your reps to pass states rights legislation if they have not done so. Fixing this political mess begins with YOU. If your contribution consists of nothing more than attacking the messenger then you are part of the problem.

A Labor political party?
Isn't that what the Constitution of the United States is about? Why don't we just forget about all of this arguing. You go out and work to earn your agreed upon salary and when you get your pay check, just write a check back to the government for half, you can even give them more if you want! Or, at the time of salary agreement, thank your "Big Business" for your salary and say "oh, you can give half my pay check to the government--no problem, my labor union said it would be a good thing to do. I don't need that half for my family." Notice that Big Business hasn't received any of your paycheck--sorry, until now, that is. That is right, big business now gets it through a program called "Bail Out" because government (there's that word again) needs to get involved. We all know that unions have put their nasty tasting finger in the bail out pot because unions are very interested in power and when you are ready for truth, they have no interest in you--just what is in your pocket, and they would take it all if you let them--and you do--shame one you.

Flying Goat II
To Joey in GA:

Obama will be re-elected. The people who voted for him in 08 will vote for him in 2012. The MSM will campaign for him again. And until the Republican party gets back to conservative principles, they will continue to lose elections, espepcially if they nominate another "moderate."

Decent days work
Hal Donahue questions that if a decent days work doesn't earn you a decent pay enough to live frugally the job should not exist. Not all jobs should be meant to allow someone to live, even frugally. The myth behind the living wage theory. Should the 17 year old life guard at the community pool be expected to paid a living wage? What about the person flipping burgers? Some jobs are meant to be entry level jobs, training for future.

The only problem is that now a days people expect to graduate from the new high school (college) earn 100K get 4 weeks vacation and work 30 hours a week doing as little as possible.

Decent wage earning manufacturing jobs have left the country. For the most part due to everyone wanting to "vote" buying wanting to save a buck or two on cheap imports.

Unions should be forbidden from using their dues to support any political actions. Why should a union members dues be used to contribute to a political party they do not support?

poor bitter malkin
it about time we understand ppl like malkin.....this whatever she is happens to be a gift to big biz....malkin your a payoff to them to spread hate and lies...

Wake up and smell the coffe
From one absurd distortion to another.

Unions don't have any power??? What are you smoking?

Big Business is all to blame?? Again: What are you smoking?

Once again, the feel-good, let's do the right thing crowd, whose hearts are in the right place thinking they are for the 'little guy' are being sold down the river (deliberate allusion to slavery).

Unions...especially unions that include government employees - spending money to elect someone to government? Nobody sees any ethical problems here?

As I have said before: I think all PACS are unConstitutional and therefore illegal. We can petition government...we should not have to raise millions/billions to have our voice heard.

don't care if like-minded folks get together to discuss and seek people for public office that support their concerns, but that is where it should stop.

It is a national disgrace that our 'elected' officials are Bought and Paid for on the backs of those they are ostensibly helping. Anybody that doesn't see the greed and profoundly dishonest means by which our government 'leaders' are placed into office is not paying attention.

Payoffs, bribes, graft...it has been going on for a long time, but it only seems to be getting worse, and now we have Obama the Destroyer in there nailing down the coffin lid.

Impeach. Repeal. Replace.

Once again the politicians have managed to frame the debate and DIVIDE our nation in factions. Rich/Poor, Union/NonUnion, Gay/Straight, Big Oil/Environmentalists, Black/White....ad nauseum.

Paying their "Fair Share"
Union collected dues money is exempt from taxation as long as it is used for collective bargaining and contract administration.

Money spent on matters political, however, must be reported as income, and a "fair share" of taxes must be paid.

When Stern proudly boasts of the millions SEIU spent on Obama, be is also boasting of cheating the American taxpayer since no taxes were paid.

Hmmm...wonder if TurboTax Tim Geithner will bother to look into this case of tax evasion?

One last note to Ranger29 who makes the excuse that the right does the same for Republicans...perhaps so, but I ask you to ponder this: If anyone from Haliburton proudly boasted that his organization had spent more than $60 million to get Bush elected, do you think that the media might have taken notice and led the charge against Haliburton?

I agree, Clifton
Particularly, "we are on our own and will have to do what we have always done, fight for our very existance because if we don't, we will be leaving our nation vulnerable to any outside force that chooses to attack while we are at war with ourselves". ACORN and SEIU are in bed together raking in the big bucks. It's money and power, not the workers, they are for. I agree with n2win and tomaspain also. It's is and always will be, We The People.

Hal
As usual, you go off topic. As usual, most of us will ignore your tangential subject

useless!
Democrat/Libs + unions = useless.

I really hope, that they are not pickin' a fight......for it will be a cold day in hell, that I would ever work union.

Nice statement. Are you going to elaborate for us? You see, I didn't know the religious right was a defined union organization like the SEIU and that it contributed 60 mil to the Bush campaign and had two of its members appointed to his cabinet. What were their names again?

Communists & Obama & Unions

"The Labor Movement

The unprecedented unity of all unions endorsing one candidate and pulling out a quarter million rank and filers to lead the mobilization of the entire membership bodes very well for the future.

Not just in the numbers, but in the experience and training that 250,000 organized workers benefitted from.

Not just in the door knocking and phone banking, but in the substance of those conversations, becoming skilled at taking on racism and discussing “Joe the Plumber.”

Not just during the elections, but for the ongoing campaign to win the Employee Free Choice Act and other demands.

Not just in their own states, but thousands of volunteers traveling to the battlegrounds in a heroic effort which created a near-clean sweep of the Midwest with Missouri still too close to call."

Dr. Douglas
Again, like Hal nice tangent. So Union's have little power and Big Business has it all? So when Chrysler went down, who did Obama and his cronies arrange to have the majority owenership? Wasn't it the UAW?

Answer this
How is One citizen = One Vote compromised by PACs? (presumably, a PAC is voluntarily supported by like-minded individuals, but even among a group (say Health Care Workers) there will be divergent opinions on how to improve their lot.) Is your voice diluted?

How about Unions? If you are forced to join a union (Card check!) but only the union leaders (who are making beaucoup bucks! btw) are setting the agenda for which candidate to support, how does that not dilute your voice?

It is the same thing with political parties, IMHO.

How is it that the rest of the nation was not 'disenfranchised' during the Republican run-up to nomination when McCain was declared the presumptive nominee before ALL of the nation was allowed to vote? States that allow anyone to vote in a Republican primary, regardless of political party declaration, skewed it for everyone else.

Don't forget: Money doesn't talk it screams.

And the Unions have a big voice. Big Business has a big voice.

I Want MY voice heard.

So what
And so what. Banks, Insurance companies, and Defense contractors have been pouring millions into the coffers of Republicans for Decades with not a peep for Malkin.

And why do you think they did that? To be good citzens? Look at the legislative Record of Republicans in office. Corporate Lawyers wrote legislation that they shopped around for some money grabbing conservative who sponsored it.

Not that Dems are angels, but Republicans were willing to go much further ins screwing consumers, workers, and small businesses to help their corporate benefactors.

Unions are not perfect, I will even grant you that some are no better than those corporate interests, but at least they provide a countervailing power and that is good for the country. Wingnuts have been poisoned with the propaganda that CEO's are godly and unions are the devil. But if you look closely ate the history of American Industry, the opposite was the case. My view is that neigher is an angel or devil but we are served when both are strong.

sorry for the double post
WTH? TH?

Living Wage!?
I have seen, with my own two eyes:

Jobs held up for hours, even days because union regs said that the stepladder sitting in the way of the work cannot be moved by the people of the department who are performing that specific job, but only by the people of the department who put it there. Also, due to union regs, the people trying to do this job cannot be pulled off this job and sent to another; they must wait for the ladder to be moved. Crews of 3 to 5 people, all making a premium wage as laborers ($25.00 - $30.00/hr, a fortune where I live) stand around and wait for this stupid ladder to be moved, sometimes for days.

I've also seen these wages:

Forklift Driver: $34.00/hr
Day laborer: $25.00/hr
Warehouse Worker: $27.00/hr

I'm a project engineer with a non-union defense contract manufacturer and I make what the union day laborer makes. True I'm at the lower end of the pay scale for my job and industry, but $23.00/hr for stoop labor? If this was a private company they would have gone out of business along time ago. That job is simply not worth that kind of money. Any where else around here it would pay about $10.00 - $12.00/hr.

So basically the union ensures that overpaid people, many with little or no qualifications, will take a ridiculously long time to perform even the most simple and mundane of tasks at a cost that could easily be quintuple what it would cost in the non-union private sector.

As it is, folks who work for the government, such as our local Naval Shipyard, union employees all, are paid with taxpayer dollars.

This is YOUR money at work for the government. No wonder union employees rabidly vote Democrat; it's their sacred cash cow, and their making money hand over fist at YOUR expense.

If you're gonna be dumb.....
Dr. Douglass….

It’s my understanding you are an intellectual type. That being said, If Michelle specializes in distorting events and motives in order to hurt the little guy then please explain why poor people have been voting for democrats for 50 years and they are still poor.

Luckydog1
Ranger 29, like Hal the REMF, and the other trolls are as thick as crabs on a French wh0re here when Malkin, Limbaugh, and Coulter post their articles.

Mostly we ignore their bleats.

Obama Bails out UAW/Not GM
Obama bailed out Unions to pay them back. The Chrysler and GM Bailouts were not Chrysler and GM bailouts, they were UAW bailouts who are using Our Tax Dollars to continue funding their Union Contracts with Their Workers including Paying Workers almost full pay for sitting home for the last ten years after their jobs were replaced with technology. Our Tax Dollars are continuing to Fund Their Outrageous Employeee Packages.

And GM and Chrysler continue to tank, are going bankrupt after the government Bailed out the Unions instead of bailing out the Failing Businesses which were already Failing Thanks to Bloated Union Contracts, Government Interference with Regulations on Auto Industries, EPA standards, and Excessive Taxation.

Why do you think that during the last 30 years, most U.S. Industries left the country? They left the Country To Get Away from Excessive Government Regulations and Controls, Excessive Taxation, and in many cases because of Marxist Unions that were more concerned with their Wages and Benefits than they were in Producing Quality Products.

To take the country back, and to get our industries back, is to Get The DAmned Government Out of Business and Stop Excessive Regulation and Taxation. And, for Unions to gain any respect, they need to Develop a Work Ethic and less of an Entitlment Ethic.

Speaking of Union Scum
Which party is it that is doing away with the traditional America practice of a secret ballot in regards to Unionizing and going with a thuggish card check?

The GOP?

Nope.

The Nanny Staters in the Democratic Nazi Party

Mrs. Paddy
Id be all for secreat ballots when the Republicans in congress start writing laws that adequately punish management for union busting. Anyone who looks carefully at this issue knows the pressure and threats that are placed on workers who attempt to organize. Or the fact that management can call mandatory meetings of workers to twist arms to prevent unionization.

I wish that congress would investigate the practices of union busters. Even with this act in place their will not be a level playing field for unions.

Correction
My bad!

The day union day laborer make $2.00/hr more than me.

LIBERALISM
at work again.

What a bunch of petty tyrants.

GROW THE REVOLUTION!

Who Runs America
So labor unions are running the country with Obama as their frontman on a short leash. Why not just nuke ourselves, America? That would just get us there quicker.

Double Edged Debate...
I've been a union member, IAFF, for 22 yrs. In my opion, if I had a choice I would rather be a non-member. If I decide to opt-out of the union, I still must pay 2/3 of the duies and I loose my voice in that union. So, I must pay so that I can vote on work related subjects that effect me. The IAFF International endorsed Obama and that pissed me off! Unions are a double edged sword. I've seen management take advantage of employees and only after the threat of a lawsuit from the union was the matter corrected. Unions do have a place in the work force but they have no business being in politics.Unfortunately, the people that have an appetite for power can be found in both government and unions and that will never change. I consider myself a Libertarian. Republicians have let the conservatives down and Democrates, well....No Way in Hell !

Luckydog1, let me help...
Addressing Hal, Dr Duffass and RangerIQ29 is a waste of your precious time. They post inane comments, provide no back-up and unfortunately can't see the forest through the trees. Facts mean nothing to them if the facts hurt their "feelings." They are emotional thinkers incapable of rational debate.

I don't know much about Lloyd, but if his post ranting on Ms. Malkin is his example of debate and intelligence then he would qualify as the poster child for what's wrong with public education.

BTW, you blew their posts up like semtex but they don't even realize it. Hal who lives in the rust belt is still in denial about what the unions did to those jobs there and in Michigan. Can anyone say "they moved them overseas?"

My Everyday Post
The Obama Admin has already hired more idiots, criminals, cronies. HE has already told more lies, wasted more taxpayer dollars, caused more damage to national security and sponsored more irresponsible legislation than HW and GW Bush did in thier ENTIRE TERMS! HOWS THE HOPE AND CHANGE DOING FOR YOU NOW???!!!

I will add that THE sorriest garbage that I EVER had the misfortune to work with, were electrical union workes in NY. Two of the biggest Union States, Michigan & Cali are done...close them down.

paranoidmystic
"I should say not. Labor unionization is at the heart of the real American story."

Yeah, right. Detroit is a shining example.

JMO51
Anyone who looks carefully at this issue knows the pressure and threats that are placed on workers who attempt to organize.

It's actually called "free-will" employment. In Virginia, you have the right to quit w/o notice just like the boss has the right to fire you w/o notice. Sounds fair to me.

BTW, if your work ethic and job skills are good, you're in demand and have nothing to fear. So why are liberals pro union?

Oh yeah, kickbacks, election payments, and a sh8tty work ethic/job skills.

Living wage
In the past I was able to command 20-27 dollars an hour as an IT guy. Clearly, I am in the wrong business because I am lucky to get 10-15 an hour when I get work in IT. Don’t get me wrong unions perform vital rolls in talks with management on salary and safety. However, they seem to have taken things to an extreme when I here members and union leaders getting 25 to 35 dollars an hour and up to in one case, 70 plus dollars in union shops. In today’s global economy; as a hiring manager I would also look to lowest cost. Bingo I get Mexico for starters, or a new location with a new name as a fair non-union shop. That abides by the state and OSHA requirements and submits to regular inspection to prove it. I know of at least one company in my area of NY that has gone to Mexico, and another in my area of NY that has reduced its US manufacture of precision lathes and drill and CNC machines in favor of its Swiss and European co owners overseas plants.

unions
Actually, I'd tell the Obama the admin to knock themselves out supporting unions.
I think this is a loser, going for what, 2% of the labor force with ambitiions to bring it up to 3%? Sure it's an element of the coalition. A bigger mark is small business and their employees. That's the group to target. The dems are hopeless there, of course.

Peter
Good post.

I was in the Carpenter's Union as a young man and saw the rampant corruption and nepotism that went on. Sickening.

Unions have destroyed American industry, that much is clear.

Steel mills, airlines, and autos...

Unions
Why not do a survey on how union companies are doing vs. non-union businesses. I think we could almost predict the outcome. At one time, unions were necessary, but today, they are no more than a corrupt big business.

Union Workers
I worked at a large medical facility. My department treated people who had severe diabilities. Most had to be taken to the bathroom by a spouse or a nurse. Sometimes they would drop some paper towels on the floor. I was told by our union cleaning woman that someone from my department must pick up anything on the floor before she would clean it. She told me "the union told me I do not have to bend over and pick up anything". Just what we need more union workers.

JMO
Cry me a river. I think Unions are dinosaurs and should be extinct.

I'll take the unions over the gun lobby
any day. As least the unions are productive americans. what has the gun lobby done except produce death and misery for americans.

Unions won't like the new proposal
to tax health benefits.

This could be a perfect time for the Reps. to get a wedge into the express train to stealing 15% of the ec. under the guise of *care.*

Unions pride themselves on their benefit packages and won't like the Big O and his vision of O Land encroaching on union successes like generous benefits.

frank in NY
There is already a U.S. Supreme Court decision, Beck v. Communication Workers of America, which says just that. If a union employee does not his or her union dues to go toward anything other than collective bargaining (i.e., political activism), then the employee can notify his union that he does not give his permission for his dues to be used for those purposes. He can also demand, and is legally entitled to, an accounting of how his dues money was spent and to get a refund of those funds not used for collective bargaining. When I worked at a prison in Ohio I was a member of AFSCME (I joined solely for the purpose of having legal representation in the event anything happened during my employment and I needed a lawyer) I filed just such a demand. My union reps weren't happy with me but, since I had the legal right to it, there wasn't much they could do about it.

I will never again be a member of a union.

Craig
"I think this is a loser, going for what, 2% of the labor force with ambitiions to bring it up to 3%?"

Excellent point. It's the implications that gives me pause.

Uions killed most
newspapers and magazines BEFORE the recent decline in papers because young people can't read.

NYC had 16 daily and often double-edition (am and pm--you don't see that anymore) papers until the great strike of 1968 and now there are 4.

Unions killed steel in this country, textiles and garments, the pub. school system, and will kill the auto industry.

The only good thing about the AUW now is it will be in charge of its own demise while it takes down GM and Chrysler.

On the bright side, unions will not be happy with King O's healthcare boondoggle if he wants to tax benefits to pay for it. Unions see benefits the way the Irish used to see gold at the end of the rainbow. There'll be lots of angst over taxing union benefits.

Some missing the point
It's not about the union worker, it's about their union bosses.
My Regional manager had a call from one of those bosses. He didn't say much to this union boss, but the union boss had plenty to say like "I can be your best friend or your worst enemy. And if you don't go along with us, you'll be meeting some of my 300lbs persuaders and you won't like it.”
You union members need to dump your leadership if you want sympathy from non-union folks. You won’t get understanding by threats and intimidation.

GunnyG©
You are spot on. Bad management and especially the unions caused the downfall of GM and Chrysler. Hal and the other libdolts talk about a living wage, but what the UAW workers were making put these high school grads and drop-outs in the upper middle class ($75.00/hour or for a 40 hour week for a year at $120,000.00) That's one hell of a living wage.

Well they reaped what they sowed and their greed has been their downfall. I don't think Obama can print enough or borrow enough money to pay to keep GM afloat. I see bankruptcy as the only way out and I hope the judge has more sense than the president and congress.

renny
Right you are! One of the most cherished gifts the unions have wrested for their members is their health insurance benefits. There is no greater, more munificent or life-giving gift to good health on planet Earth than Automotive Blue Cross - the grail of benefits. And the super-majority Democrat Senate is about to try and tax it. Hahahahahahahhahah!

What the young Obamajugend who flutter around here singing hosannahs to Him do not comprehend is that there is not one Holy and Apostolic Democrat Party led by its Lord and Saviour, Barack H. Obama. The Democrat party is a loose coalition of political identities who combine only in their hatred of their enemies. The Senante is filled with old bull elephants who make a big deal out of bowing and scraping before Prince Obama, but who would cut off his nuts in a heartbeat if not doing so threatens their fiefdoms. Read any history of kingship and you will understand the nature of barons and boyars. Some of these old bulls are beholden to unions and some are not. Those that are not could give a ratsass that Obama is in debt to the unions.

This is going to be great fun to watch. I'm stocked up with boxes of delicious Trader Joe's microwave popcorn, ready to go!

The end of the story is the best part
The end of the story is the best part and the tale of the tape. Just wait to see what our auto industry looks like and what it is going to cost...I've run a business for 30 years and it never surprises me when about a year after a person is hired they know more about my business than me, and how I am the rich lucky guy....as for working for union people, not all but most of them will pick a non-licensed, un-insured group of workers to do their roofing or what ever job in the name of saving money...

Big Labor's Investment in Obama Pays Off
This is Chicago politics on a grand national scale and the Koolaid keeps flowing.

She's wasting her breath
Even the sheeple who bought the grinning ninny his fancy White House job know he's a Chicago crook.

Mark Adams
I don't think we're missing the point. What I was trying to demonstrate, is that, after all is said and done at higher levels, the end result is sub standard and self defeating.

What the unions and management did to gm
What the unions and management did to GM and Chryler they are doing to all levels of government. Will we be the next Argentina or pehaps the Soviet Union? The Crystal ball looks rather ominous for these United States.

Union Due Informal Taxation
These labor union take money from low income and middle class worker to gain the union leader power. But do these labor union let the worker choose which candidates and political candidate their money goes to? No
These labor union leader like the liberal in congress have no problem spend our hard earn money to gain power even if it goes against the will of the people. So just think of your union dues as another form of taxation. Unfortunately, the bill keeps growing for our children, their childrenand their children's children. Enough is enough!! Vote in November 2010 to kick the buks out and reminder them who really is the boss.

Retired UAW members...
are and have been living off the cream. The cream is no longer rising to the top and what have they left to their successors? Blue John, that's what.

The practice of robbing Peter to pay Paul (Socialism) that already exists in America (SS, Medicaid, Medicare, etc) is bringing it's chickens home to roost and all of us are going to pay, first with the fruits of our labor and ultimately all of our Liberty.

I am a union member
and I know what people went through to organize in the ‘30s on the docks of NJ and how they chained themselves to their stations on the assembly lines in Detroit, but THOSE DAYS ARE OVER.

After WW II, the unions moved *blue collar* workers into the middle class, and once that's done, unions are obsolete and a leech on both business and workers.

As a retired teacher (NEA member) who still coaches, I have to pay the NEA, NJEA, OCEA, and my local EA because they *bargain* for my pay, but in truth, they simply siphon off my dues for political support I don't agree with and would never donate to.

They protect rotten teachers, getting them shifted from one school to another or early golden parachutes or even "non-contract renewals* so the accused keeps his (usually) certificating and opportunity to extend benefits, going to court to defend almost any egregious behavior short of sexual assault (and I know cases where they even defended against those charges until it became too politically hot to continue the practice).

They even, under the guise of *good relations,* cozy up to bds. of ed and *go along to get along* when they actually have opportunities to stand up to administrations or have any kind of confrontation on behalf of members.

Besides that, the NEA in 1972 said now teachers are the engines of social change and abandoned academics for political indoctrination. Is it any wonder test scores are always terrible?

I've been a union member for nearly 40 years, and I've seen the wreckage the industrial unions have done to manufacturing in Am. and can quote you that once the US had 33% unionization in the 1950 sbut that has declined to 7%, which is mostly gov't unionizing like teachers and state/fed workers, because unions have outlived their purpose and killed their own golden eggs: business.

"I'll take the unions over the gun lobby
any day. As least the unions are productive americans. what has the gun lobby done except produce death and misery for americans."

Actually idiot, the most gun crime is in LIBERAL areas with excessive gun control laws, but you knew that already didn't you?

Fugging Soros troll.

unions
As a 55 year union member I can agree with some points and disagree with others. All most all union bosses at the international level are dictators. It is very hard to get them voted out,and if you do one of his toadys will get the job.The local members by and large belong to the trade unions because of the pay. Most never attend union meetings. In my area to be a union tradesman you have to serve up to 5 years apprentice ship.In Iowa we are a right to work state. That means that if you can get an employer to hire you the union has to let him in.

Organized crime
Organized crime is running our country.

Decent wages
Nobody is saying that people should be paid decent wages, but they should be paid what they are worth. If Joe does a great job, comes in on time every day, puts in a full shift, and really goes out of his way to make the company better, shouldn't he be paid more than John, who does just enough to get by, comes in late every now and then, finds a way to extend his breaks, and really is only there for the paycheck? Unfortunately, the unions don't look at it that way. They say that anyone doing the same job gets the same pay, regardless of whether that person is performing as well as another worker or not. They also make it very hard to fire non-productive workers (don't want to lose all those union dues, now do we?). I will agree that unions served a good purpose at one time, when working conditions were deplorable and pay was abysmal, but that was more than a century ago. Nowadays the unions flex their muscle in order to run the companies. Well, they have that now, with Chrylser and GM. I have always bought GM products, but never again.

Boycott
What industries/companies does the SEIU operate in? I want a list so I know which companies I won't give my business to.

What business does a union with its own agenda have in any policy making position in our government?

Wash. gov OKs tax cut for newspapers
Gov. Chris Gregoire has approved a tax break for the state's troubled newspaper industry.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —
Gov. Chris Gregoire has approved a tax break for the state's troubled newspaper industry.

The new law gives newspaper printers and publishers a 40 percent cut in the state's main business tax. The discounted rate mirrors breaks given in years past to the Boeing Co. and the timber industry.

Newspapers across the country have resorted to layoffs and other cost-cutting moves to deal with a wounded business model and a recession-fueled drop in advertising.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer printed its final edition earlier this year and was converted to an Internet-only publication with a much-reduced staff.

When did you retire as a Prof?

Hal and Dr. Doug
I'm coming to understand that these morons must be paid shills for the Demogogue party. Nobody can be that stupid but craft it so cleverly, (although transparent).

Unions are a movement in the bodily sense of the word, as far as I'm concerned. They had a halfway decent purpose in the past but the usefulness is gone. Now they're an anachronism.

There's a union at the company where I work. Does it seem somewhat "old-school" that, when the union head retired, his SON took over the presidency. How 'Hoffa' can that get?!

American Taxpayers Vs. Big Unionists !

From The American Federation of Government Employees,to The American Federation of State,County and Municipal Employees,to Now , The Auto Workers Union ,BIG UNION is An Engine Driving BIG GOVERNMENT SOCIALISM.

INDEPENDENCE DAY TEA PARTY REBELLION !

THE 4TH OF JULY ,2009 !

UP THE REBELLION !

Thanks, Kevin
Exactly so.

But GM and Chrysler will die and the UAW with them. Another triumph for the King Elect O, and by 2010, let's give him a Rep. Sen. to put a cork in O's vision of O Land.

Unions are nothing more
than a mafia "protection" racket.
There isn't a labor union in America that isn't crooked or isn't connected to organized crime.
Obama is just "paying tribute" to the mafia dons.

Big Unions vs Big Corporations
Big Unions Big Corporations Whats the difference? They both exploit labor. Who is looking out for you really. Union just want as many members as possible paying dues. Big Corporations just want to make as much profit as possible.

New Parody just up
Paddy Whacks 'em Oodles all the Day.

Enjoy. See you at the Tea Parties.

Up the Revolution!
Liberty or Debt

Obama: Chains you can believe in.

Unions lie
I belong to a transportation union and during the election they (the Union)supported first Hillary then Obama. I was told by my Chairman that a vote for Obama was a vote to keep my paycheck. Exactly (3) days after he took office 2,500 employees were furloughed, some were called back for (30) days but since April almost another 1,000 have been laid off. Where is my union now? Hell where is Obama to pay my mortgage, tution for my kids, my car note. Thank goodness I saved some money, and that I retired from another profession before going to work for the railroad. The unions have done nothing, the same as Obama to help the middle man. He has surrounded himself with idiots who have their own agenda, have no idea what normal people go through, they shove their liberal, gay, anti Christian agenda down our throats and then they wonder why people are angry and upset. Funny my local chairman who voted his paycheck for Obama, is laid off hows that for a kick in the nuts.

Waiting
for Dark Helmet Doofass to make his usual non sequiter post.

Get a brain Michael.
The difference between Labor and a Corporation is obvious. If you don't like the Corporation get another job. Try and buck the Union now that we have the ObamaNation. If Managers at Corporations are fired because of mis-management. You ever hear of a Union Boss fired for driving a Corporation out of business.

Useful Tools
Big labor is just a useful tool for the Communist Obama regime. When the time comes, when everyone works for the Supreme Leader, big labor will find that they are no longer needed.

DC looks more like Chicago everyday
Washington DC is rapidly beginning to resemble Chicago's patronage politics more and more everyday.

Chrysler
a model of innovation with a bit of sarcasm rolled in to the mix. With the restructuring the company, having together with Fiat is doing what most companies are going to be forced to do...that is, export jobs in order to actually make a profit. Many more, if economic predictions are correct, tax increases+outrageous labor costs will force companies to totally move from US soil. Who in their right mind wouldn't. Obama's stupidity has no boundaries.

I like what Andy Stern said;
"We spent $60.7 million to get him elected." Who are the "we"?? The AFL/CIO should have spent that money keeping the Industries whose workers they fleece afloat so they could fleece another day. I cannot believe GM, Chrysler and to a degree, Ford Motors were stupid enough to agree to pay full wages to a UAW employee that was apart of a layoff, or Plant closing! No wonder GM & Chrysler went belly up!

Sure looks like....
..."Big Labor" has become the very thing they set out to destroy: "Big Business".

Ms. Malkin
Thank you for the informative column. I have work in both union and non-union jobs. The union meetings I attended were never about contract issues, they were always about dem politics. Vote the way we say or you are doomed.
Kirk

Union member whiners
Listening to these Union members whine is just too much. The basic truth is Unions had a reason to exist when dangerous working conditions, child labor abuses, company towns and stores, ect. were the rule rather than the exception.
While Unions might have had some influence over the disappearance of the these abuses, simple economics and free market influences were a greater reason these practices disappeared. Companies finally figured out they made more money doing things right from the beginning.
So the only thing left for Unions to do was try to extract more money from firms. In the end people end up getting compensated for more than their jobs are actually worth. And as is the case economics always wins, so the unionized companies cannot compete with the non union counterparts and eventually fail.
Except in Government where failure can be overcome with increasing everyone’s taxes to pay of the union employees. As with all socialistic trends this works until you run out of other people’s money. (Quoted by Margret Thatcher)

JMO51
"And so what. Banks, Insurance companies, and Defense contractors have been pouring millions into the coffers of Republicans for Decades with not a peep for Malkin."

Look at the record. Banks, insurance and defense contractors pour tons of money into both parties. It is insanely stupid to say they pour money into one party or the other. Again look at the record.

Also flawed logic: If someone else does it no matter how immoral it is than it is okay if I do it?

But there is hypocrisy in the unions because the leadership decides where the money goes and not the people in the unions. Also, someone explain union workers for government jobs? It doesn't make sense. It government wasn't corrupt and inefficient enough.

Also, please defend card checks for union members. It's indefensible thuggish tactic.

There's that Michelle Smell
And boy does it stink today! Remember: No columnist ever took an oath to tell the truth -- this is all heresay and her warped, paranoid, screeching, childish opinion. NO ONE is more corrupt than the Republicans. Period. No one. Don't tell me that big business didn't pour billions into getting that moron Bush who couldn't string a proper sentence together and didn't work a day in his life elected. Malkin is just ranting and raving to get attention -- there's absolutely no truth to what she says. Talk about living on the dole! As long as she whines and screeches on Fox News she makes a living. Exploitation? She's all for exploitation -- look how she's got everyone here all stirred up. But, as I say -- it's a free country. Just don't expect to get many people to join whatever is left of the Repub. party. Perception is reality and the current perception is you're a bunch of ignorant, gun-toting, hillbillies who refuse to believe how much Bush and psycho Cheney damaged the reputation of America. You're probably good, decent, church-going folk but it doesn't look that way to anyone who reads the posts and columnists. Chances are good that they'll be more losses for the party in '10 and 12. Face it: Obama is hugely popular and well-respected. That's the truth. Get someone like him and the Repubs may have a chance, but not if you don't dump these angry, bitter people like the columnists on TH

Unions will be phased out
as the Obama Brownshirts (ACORN) move in to take over government-controlled corporations. Labor has always been racist, and Obama is intent on revenge against the white power structure, whether management or labor.

Unions are Big Business
When I worked in white collar, my annual salary reviews were: 1. Let's see if you earned what we're presently paying you. 2. Let's see if you contributed enough to warrant an increase. Your performance review was usually conducted separate of salary as, even if you had done an outstanding job, your salary was restricted to some formual involving percentiles of this and that, which usually meant you received little salary gain and none if you were already at the top of your pay range. Bonuses were inserted in lieu of salary primarily because the company didn't have to pay those each year.
Today, I have my own business and I work my butt off and employ my own workers. Some are workers always learning more and some just do what is necessary to get by. Their salaries and bonuses reflect this, although they all receive equal employment benefits.
Unions are a necessary part of our lives but like all big business, they sometimes are self-defeating and riddled with corruption. The ordinary union member sometimes fails to voice their concern if things don't seem right and just as with overall govenment, they find it difficult, if not impossible, to implement change. Equity and safety in the workplace should be paramount concerns of unions and if achieved, unions should be contributing as much as receiving. Often, we see unions demanding more simply because, hey, we're unions and always have to be doing something!
Certainly, today we see unions expanding their influence beyond the workplace to influence government policy and laws. As with all big business, one has to keep an eye on their activities as they will stroll off the beaten path. Bureaucracies within are the biggest enemy of unions, not so much public perception, but we all wonder when we see a business close down completely when a union stands its ground.

Liberal Genius is anything but
What you will see is a mad outflux of jobs from the US - even moreso than under Bush. We had better start to learn foreign languages if we want to follow the jobs.

Genius you are a fool - the labgor movement is nothing more than a move to sieze your freedoms and make you MORE dependent upon the govt. You can't see it b/c you are too smart.

Time to pay your dues America
There was a time in America when unions were vital to the protection of workers abused by long hours and placed in dangerous working environments. Those days have passed.

There was also a time when our Media would expose workplace violations and abuse.
Those days are gone as well.

Under the blessings on our Government, the MSM "see G.E." and unions are clearly in bed and BOTH appear to be not merely useless but abusive to the comman man, and only interested in their own consolation of power and money. But being paid for by tax payers.

This will be ugly folks..

Mr. Genius,
Guess that means you don't like my observation. It doesn't appear that you are getting much enjoyment out of it.

Have a nice day.

Is This America or Cuba?
By DEBORAH SOLOMON and DAMIAN PALETTA
WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration has begun serious talks about how it can change compensation practices across the financial-services industry, including at companies that did not receive federal bailout money, according to people familiar with the matter.

The initiative, which is in its early stages, is part of an ambitious and likely controversial effort to broadly address the way financial companies pay employees and executives, including an attempt to more closely align pay with long-term performance.

Administration and regulatory officials are looking at various options, including using the Federal Reserve's supervisory powers, the power of the Securities and Exchange Commission and moral suasion. Officials are also looking at what could be done legislatively.

Among ideas being discussed are Fed rules that would curb banks' ability to pay employees in a way that would threaten the "safety and soundness" of the bank -- such as paying loan officers for the volume of business they do, not the quality. The administration is also discussing issuing "best practices" to guide firms in structuring pay.
WSJ.com/ExecutivePay: News, pay data, more At the same time, House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D., Mass.) is working on legislation that could strengthen the government's ability both to monitor compensation and to curb incentives that threaten a company's viability or pose a systemic risk to the economy.

How dare you sir
How dare 2 million Americans get involved with the political process. How dare they call their fellow citizens and express their opinions.

Dont they know access to the political process is geared for wealthy Americans and corporations??

Psychological Warfare
Obama has waged all kinds of warfare upon this nation. However, the Narcissist-in-Chief is relying most upon psychological warfare: Beating down Americans with daily assaults upon our liberty. Even Charles Krauthammer just the other day said he was "outraged out." Heady stuff coming from one of the most respected men of commentary today. Obama delights in beating down the country; and as he does so he sneers and gleefully moves on to his next criminal act. As far as the SEIC, specifically, is concerned, Glen Beck is all over this. So far I see only Glen and Michelle taking this on. What can we do? We can stay informed for one thing. Then we can inform our neighbors. Write letters to your local paper and let others know they are not alone (This tends to empower people.). By 2012 it will be too late for us. However, we can make a move for 2010. It will be crucial for everyone to actively support Conservative candidates. Even financially, if possible, since Obama has unlimited funds available to him. Sign up for positions at polling places to ward off threats of ACORN corruption. It will never be "business as usual" in the United States again unless we take back our country from the criminals, who, it appears, are now shaping our future -- and I do not use the word "criminal" lightly. Write the Republicans and insist that they get out there so that YOUR voice can be heard. Insist that they galvanize, come up with a plan and publicly voice their outrage -- backed up with facts and figures. Get working, my fellow countrymen. Michelle, as usual, takes no prisoners and challenges the opposition to "bring it on." Go Michelle! And, thank you for your courage.

Bad Mix: Money & Politics
Unions have a sordid history. Too often they were controlled by gangster/mafia types, many of whom came from Chicago.

We must take our country back and not just by donating money to causes that squander it and that may not truly represent their purported and often conflicted goals but by everyday citizens being involved and shaking things up. Taking money out of politics is one big first step. First, limit campaigns to nine months max and each qualified "politician want-to-be" gets a lean, fixed budget with no outside contributions and equal media exposure. Term limits for elected office (2, 4 year terms for Senators,; 3, 2 year terms for Representatives) AND pay-for-performance, as determined by an unbiased methodology, is a must. Also the benefits attached to any office should be on par with main-street and not politicians voting their own long list of privileged and elitist benefits on the taxpayers’ dime like their full pay for life after serving one term. This will get their attention. Vote the bums out and demand reform as above!

It's all a part of the big picture...
Unions, Obama and Staff... They are all active members of the New Party and the DSA. The Unions are the drivers and Obama and Staff are the main vehicles. Do the research people and you will understand what I am telling you. Michelle knows all about the New Party and the DSA, she has been trying to inform you for several months, but I think you only see what you want to see, isn't that Dr. Douglas?

I'm so tired of the
corruption in Washington. And I'm tired of busybodies from local to federal polticians wanting to run every facet of my life and take every penny I earn.

Time is running out for those of us who wish to live with even minimal personal freedom.

Once cap and trade and national healthcare are in place there will be no going back. Not to mention the plans to censor political opinion and hate crimes legislation.

Honestly, our best hope would be complete economic collapse and start over. Failing that there will be continued encroachment on our liberties until we all live half lives of economic and political fear or we see this country broen apart.

You are right. Unions don't serve the same purpose they used to since safety and labor laws are commonplace. Instead, they are all about money, control and power as Michelle's article demonstrates. Further, the press and other media outlets are no longer "the fourth estate" - for the most part they are in the pockets of this Administration and can control the message. We are in a dangerous situation in this country when the majority of its citizens are being blindly herded into a field. I'm one of the stragglers, I guess.
