Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I've been a fan of Dunkin' Donuts for years. Their Munchkins are heaven. Their coffee is better and cheaper than Starbucks. And the company's management has taken a brave and lonely stand in support of immigration enforcement -- refusing to hire illegal aliens and blowing the whistle on applicants with bogus Social Security numbers.

So it was with some dismay that I learned last week that Dunkin' Donuts spokeswoman Rachael Ray, the ubiquitous TV hostess, posed for one of the company's ads in what appeared to be a black-and-white keffiyeh.

The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant (and not so ignorant) fashion designers, celebrities and left-wing icons.

Three years ago, pop singer Ricky Martin donned a traditional red-checked keffiyeh with the phrase "Jerusalem is ours" inscribed in Arabic. Apologizing for his obliviousness, Martin said: "I had no idea that the keffiyeh scarf presented to me contained language referring to Jerusalem, and I apologize to anyone who might think I was endorsing its message." Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, Spain's Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, Hollywood darlings Colin Farrell, Sienna Miller and Kirsten Dunst, and rapper Kanye West have all been photographed in endless variations on the distinctive hate couture. So has Meghan McCain, daughter of the GOP presidential candidate, who really ought to know better given that her dad positions himself as the candidate best equipped to "confront the transcendent challenge of our time: the threat of radical Islamic terrorism."

The scarves are staples at anti-Israel rallies in San Francisco and Berkeley. Balenciaga made them chic on the runway. British retailer Topshop sold them stamped with skull prints. Urban Outfitters turned the keffiyehs into a youth trend a few years ago and marketed them as "anti-war scarves." Which brings us to Rachael Ray.

Ray hawked Urban Outfitters scarves on her website before appearing in the Dunkin' Donuts ad. If she (or whichever stylist is dressing her) wasn't aware of the jihad scarf controversy before she posed for the Dunkin' campaign, she should have been. Urban Outfitters initially pulled the keffiyeh merchandise and apologized when Jewish customers protested, but reintroduced them with different names and colors in several global markets. This is the same company that marketed a bigotry-laced "Everyone loves a Jewish girl" T-shirt stamped with dollar signs and shopping bags. Most recently, the company halted sales of a violence-promoting T-shirt last week depicting a young Palestinian boy in a keffiyeh carrying an AK-47 assault rifle, over the word "Victimized." The T-shirt also featured the Palestinian flag, a map of the Palestinian territories and a small white dove.

"Please understand that we do not buy items to provoke controversy or to intentionally offend," a company spokesman pleaded. Their actions, however, speak louder than their assuaging words.

Dunkin' Donuts won't identify where Ray's scarf was purchased, but issued this statement after blogger Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs (littlegreenfootballs.com) and I, along with many other bloggers and consumers, called attention to it:

"Thank you for expressing your concern about the Dunkin' Donuts advertisement with Rachael Ray. In the ad that you reference, Rachael is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design that was purchased at a U.S. retail store. It was selected by the stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we will no longer use the commercial."

It's refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists. Too many of them bend over backward in the direction of anti-American political correctness. Naturally, liberal commentators on the Internet are now up in arms over Dunkin' Donuts' decision to yank the ad and mock anyone who expresses concern over the keffiyeh's symbolism.

It's just a scarf, the clueless keffiyeh-wearers scoff. Would they say the same of fashion designers who marketed modified Klan-style hoods in Burberry plaid as the next big thing?

Fashion statements may seem insignificant, but when they lead to the mainstreaming of violence -- unintentionally or not -- they matter. Ignorance is no longer an excuse. In post-9/11 America, vigilance must never go out of style.

Hooray for Dunkin' Donuts and now,
HOPEFULLY Rachel Ray (Gad she's gorgeous and she can cook too) will come out with an apology for unintentional offense to her public. She has historically shown allot of class, let's hope she continues.
Thank you Michelle, for taking the time to point out an offense to the sensitivities of the sane AND for reminding us that there really are companies that still care about their country's core values. That ad had to cost a large chunk of money and Dunkin' Donuts chucked it (although they certainly bought some goodwill by their action).

Great column (as usual)!

TBC ~:>{)

Robert, fortunately for us readers she
(Michelle) has a life.

That said, thank you Robert for, at least, not trashing her. Perhaps you are, in fact, starting to mature to your chronological age.

TBC ~:>{)

Why, Rachel, Why?
First, I must admit that I have somewhat of a crush on Rachel Ray. I don't know why, but she just looks so glamorous to me (Then again, so does Tina Fey, but it probably has more to do with their intelligence rather than they are just brunettes, which I'm naturally attracted to.)

I mean, she looks so sexy in those cover shots of her magazine, which, suffice it to say, would get her about forty lashes in any of those Islamic countries that her scarf was promoting.

Anyway, why must she wear something that would otherwise cover her up completely? (We are talking about something in line with a burka, right?) A day without her face for me is like a day without sunshine.

Please don't wear those things, Rachel Ray. You're much too beautiful to waste your beauty on that thing.

JohnDoe, Actually Miss Malkin is an
AMERICAN conservative. Talk about clueless!!!

TBC ~:>{(

are you serious?
I've seen the ad. It's a scarf. A paisley scarf. with FRINGE. It's not a keffiyeh, it's frickin' scarf wrapped around her frickin' neck. Are people no longer allowed to wear scarves around their necks?

Welcome to the United States of the Easily Offended.

Isn't it a shame
That Wobbie wasted all his time making these posts since they'll be gone in a few hours, since he's here illegally.

And he's even behaved this time, SO FAR.

Too bad, so sad. Bye Wobbie's posts.

Why ?
Why do so many in Hollywierd, Media, Dem and Dem-lite groups hate our country?

Why ??????????

Anyway, thanks for the info, and FIVE STARS *****

Thanks, Michelle
Stand-up comedians will be getting laughs with this one for YEARS. You're like a gift that keeps on giving.

Much Ado About Nothing
I have seen the scarf and it is a plain scarf and not Arab head gear. Judge for yourself.

Gibbson Girl
The point is not which one of these two women is better looking, the point is thge scarf. I am also normally a big fan of Michelle (look back at the comments for past columns) but if we follow the logic in this piece ALL scarves will become the tools of terrorists. To me this scarf is not a piece of Arab head gear.

Now if she had placed it over her head in a style worn by the Yasser A. it would be a different story.

Sorry, Michelle...
I am normally a huge fan of Malkin's and agree with 99% of what she writes. She's flat out wrong on this one. Look at the ad. Look at the picture. There's nothing even remotely similar between the scarf (ordinary, garden variety scarf) Rachel Ray is wearing draped around her neck and a kheffiyeh (which is worn on the head). I prefer to leave the "looking for a reason to be offended" tripe to the libs.

It is only a scarf...
Michelle I am disappointed in you. You really screwed up on this one. Don't you have anything better to write about? Why don't you leave this kind of nit picking to the Liberals.
BTW You should have told Dick Morris, that pompous arse, good riddance when he told you to shut up and let him talk or he would not come back on the show again. I don't know why Bill brings him back, he is hardly ever right with any of his predictions.

To Vic
I know the point - did you notice I put a "by the way" on my comment about looks - it's just that I keep reading posts that go on about how gorgeous RR is and I think it's weird.

LuAnn and Bob - like I said, one scarf on one Celeb would not be an issue.

But if all terrorists started wearing... oh, red t-shirts with a white stripe down each sleeve - and then the liberal celebs and bleeding heart anti-American press all suddenly started wearing red t-shirts with white stripes down the sleeves - then it might be a good idea for people (who aren't trying to make a statement) to clue in and stay away from red t-shirts with white stripes on the sleeves! Because like it or not, intentional or not - they are validating those that ARE doing it intentionally.

It's just a matter of timing and awareness and good sense.

Selling Out?
Has anyone else noticed the ad for Muslima.com on this site? Now the same people who say Muslims are sub-humans are trolling for them to buy their dating service?! You people are the worst sort of hypocrites!

Gibbson Girl
OK, what type of scarf is it OK to wear? Should all scarves be abandoned by western women forever because Arab women are forced to wear them? Hollywood stars wear shirts and tops most of the time, should women now start going topless because lefties in hollywood wear shirts?

Vic, Vic, Vic. I am shocked.

I know from your posts that you are very cognizant about life, activities, and things most consider esoteric.

Now you propose to remove the very mystique that provides the spice of life.

I'm shocked.

Would be fun for a while though.

Ratas
LOL, I figured there would be a few people jumping on that post.

I went to the Boston.com site
and at first glance it DOES look like a muslim headcovering. Reminded me of Nancy (traitor) Pelosi when she took that trip over there.

I'm glad Dunkin pulled the ad anyway. Shows they care. Thank you DD!

Caligula
Hey,

I clicked on your name to take a look at your blog, and just as I suspected,

YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SAY!

What a pompous load of hot air.

Also, I love your choice of a name: Caligula.

Caligula was probably one of the most twisted and sickeningly evil men to ever hold a position of power in the western world, but hey, you liberals with your anything goes mentality probably idolize the bloody idiot.

CurtailFrior
I went out and looked at 8 or 10 of his previous posts. He always disagreed with the column, he disagrred with every post that he commented on, and he normally like to side with gays in the gay rights manner.

From that I gathered that he is a gay liberal troll who comes here to do nothing but make trouble.

He is best left ignored.

Symbol Of Oppresson
My thanks to Keith Olbermann (what a dweeb) for cluing me into Michelle's post. Thanks to Michelle for bringing this issue to light.

We don't have to mainstream keffiyehs or headscarves as high fashion, we can choose to say NO! I live in Germany and so many women wear headscarves, it makes me sick. Its not just the terrorists, it’s the way women are treated as property in non-liberal societies. Its not a fashion when Iranian or Saudi Religious Police beat girls for showing too much skin. Where is the Women's Liberation Movement? Do they approve of shame cultures in the name of multiculturalism? When women are no longer beaten and murdered for how they dress or behave, I'll honor this most un-American fashion.

Fashion gone wrong.
The point Michelle makes about celebs and companies like Urban Outfitters mainstreaming clothing items with anti-American, pro terrorist or pro dictator messages is valid.
It is a way to make people comfortable with the symbolism and to eventually forget what these things symbolize. These keffiyehs carry deep meaning. For them to see Americans, especially celebrities wearing them is important. So, in fact, this is not much ado about nothing. Kudos to Dunkin' Donuts for having a spine and not bending to political castration, I mean political correctness.
All the celebs need to complete their outfits is a Che shirt and a commie star bag.

picture at boston.com
I looked at the link Vic posted at boston.com and at first glance it does look like the Palestinian scarf.

Do we outlaw scarfs? No
Do we make people responsible for their actions? Yes. It appears DD is being responsible for their actions by removing what may appear to be a symbol of hatred and warfare. If she had the same pattern in orange, green, or yellow, I don't believe it would be as much of an issue as long as the pattern itself ould be discerned as something other than the check print like what is on the keffiyeh. Or some other print entirely would be acceptable.

BTW I have 2 of the scarves. 1 red and white-I have been to Mecca version from my time in the Sinai and 1 tan and black used while in Iraq to help keep the sun off my neck. Do I use them any more in this country? Only to keep the top of my dresser neat and clean.

Hmmm...
I'm having some difficulty with this one. Seems like we're looking for the devil under every rock. Looks like a fringe-y fashion accessory, definitely not a keffiyeh.

Everyone launches a klunker now and then; I guess it was Michelle's turn. Rachael and Michelle are still two of the finest examples of American womanhood gracing the planet.

Caligula
"Also, she is married to a "Mr. Mom", Jesse Malkin, a "stay at home dad". Now , we know all the traditionalist THers who think it's a woman's job to stay at home with the brats will have to be up in arms about this one."

shut up peabrain. Two reasons not to call you an idiot:

1. You already are aware of that fact!

2. You lack comprehensive skills and would never realize it!

In a word, Vic!

YES!!!!!

this is the line under the picture you posted.

The Canton-based company has abruptly canceled an ad in which the domestic diva wears a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men.

Even the company admits it looks like the keffiyeh. How could anyone tell from that picture which one it is?

absolutely rediculous
women have been wearing scarves to compliment their dresses and sometimes casual wear for a very long time. my own mother had a drawer full. i wonder who she was supposed to be sympathizing with. i guess i had better sell all my own scarves to some nice mulslim man.. seems they are the only ones supposed to wear them. this is the most rediculous thing i have ever seen or read. it is fashion people. nothing more, nothing less. watch a few classic movies and you will see many. oh how stupid of me.. maybe we women have been sympathizing with the moores (spelling, sorry) since the crusades. ah, that would be the reason we wear them. how unpatriotic.

Anyone see the latest on this issue?
The Boston Globe reports, Dunkin Donuts has PULLED the offending advertisement, according to the srticle, "The company at first pooh-poohed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh. But the right-wing drumbeat on the blogosphere continued and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it'd be easier just to yank the ad. Said the suits in a statement: "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial." (In case you're wondering, the stylist who selected the offending scarf was not Gretta Enterprises boss Gretchen Monahan, who appears on Ray's TV show as a style consultant.)"

"Sorry Charlie," I've lived overseas where many a "clueless" tourist or Westerner did not know the scarf on sale at the stall was a "keffiyeh." I own a couple that were given to me by a Jordanian Air Force sergeant I got to work with as a gift for my husband and son, these are "red and white" in the same pattern as those used by the Jordanian military, which has also been adopted by Hamas.

There are distinctive variations in the weave and the type and number of knots on the fringe. It was once a way for the different tribes to "identify" themselves. But since the 1960s has been "co-oped" by the Fatah party.

What dear Rachel is wearing is a keffiyeh.

Wiki has an interesting entry about them, most of it matches up to what I've learned from being stationed and working with our "allies" in the Gulf region.

I personally don't think it looks like anything other than a scarf.

SSGT
Nancy Pelousy put a scarf on her head at the direction of the slugs while she broke the law with her trip.

Fox news is just like any other news organization in the MSM, their aim is to sell advertising and they do that best by stirring controversy.

The Devil does lurk under rocks. His methods are insidious, sly and subtle. He preys on the ignorant (like people who believe Katie Couric is a cute little thing) and arrogant fools (like actors whose IQ apparently rises exponentially with every Oscar they acquire).

beachmom: Thank you. "...this is not

much ado about nothing."

Kudos to Michelle... "It's refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists."

(And then there is the fact that Dunkin' is actually vigilant about illegal immigration!)

As opposed to some American companies that are actually doing business with Iran (GE sound familiar?) and aiding Iran in it's killing of our troops in Iraq, and who knows what else!!

And, lets not forget how CAIR and the other Islamic organizations would react should an American company inadvertently "offend" them. Based on recent past experience, people would DIE!

Have we become so complacent already that we're not seeing what's happening? Remember the "Frog in the pot!"

I think I'm going to start buying more Dunkin Donuts coffee!!!! (We'll talk about the donuts part later....)

Maggie
Confederate flags used to be all the rage, too. Most Southern patriots retired them - didn't seem APPROPRIATE under the circumstances.

Thanks AF '01
Good information. My hope is that had RR (and DD for that matter) been as well informed, she (and they) would have vetoed this particular fashion accessory. I'll wager that if you got to the bottom of this, you'd find that the stylist was equally clueless, and making a political statement wasn't even on his/her radar screen. As for the retailer, I'm inclined to be much more skeptical.

So MM, I retract my ealier post's "klunker" remark.

Vic
personally, I really don't see any problem with RR wearing the scarf. But you have to admit one thing, this particular style of scarf is very close to the ones Yassar did wear. The only difference is the color!
I'm just glad that you posted the web picture of RR, cause after reading that article, I thought I was gonna have to put my RR cookware on E-bay tonight. Whew, I dodged one there.

I reckon we have been wrong about the Che t-shirts also. They don’t mean anything either, do they now?
This is a great article Michelle, keep up the ten star work.

A big scarf like that with a tee shirt looks stupid.
If that's what R. Ray's stylist thinks looks good, then her taste is all in her mouth.

This isn't the place for lauching out onto theological rabbit trails, but I too believe the devil lurks, well hidden and patiently waiting for opportunities. I guess where we could take a long walk down the rabbit trail is whether or not we should expend more effort flushing him out or preparing our defenses.

Its only fashion!
Or so says my sister-in-law every time she brings home another Chairman Mao item from China. I told her the next time she brings my family that propaganda, I'll get her kid a hitler youth shirt. After all, its only fashion! I burn the crap she brings home. I'm told to get over it. And I respond "should the millions of victims of communism just get over it?"

Doc

Come on now, comparing this to the Che T-shirts is jumping the shark.

Being a Dunkin' Donuts fan...
....I'm inclined to think this was all done in ignorance. And I have to agree with beachmom: pairing a T-shirt with a scarf in this manner just looks stupid, no matter what type of scarf is used.

Good morning, everyone!

Doc: Exactly the point!!!!

And I bet buck just also bought his 4th bridge!

RR and her scarf
That's what it is. A scarf. The level of cultural naivete is amazing. Now, we're getting "subliminal" influences via the media. That one is very old news. BTW, I don't like the scarf because it doesn't flatter RR's skin tones. It is not a "political" statement and anyone who sees a keffiyeh has never lived in the Middle East of North Africa. I lived in NA for 3 years. Not an expert, but am familiar with the style.

YLG
Leave it to YLG to be honest and rational. Good morning.

Patriots just don't get it...

being a knee-jerk liberal and demonstrating your anti-Israel, anti-America, pro-terrorist sensibilities is.....KEWL!!!!

sheesh...

YLG
good morning yourself, deary! Oh, and my RR cookware is that bright orange variety! Looks killer on a black stove top! ha ha

And Hitler wore pants...
It is a well known fact that Adolph Hitler wore pants... yes, pants! I've seen for myself photos of hime doing so. I therefore suggest, so as not to embolden the forces of evil, that future Dunkin Donuts spokespersons refrain from wearing pants.

No Vic
My point was that many "celebrities" and people wear crap like the t-shirts just to send a message. And I would have to see the ends of the scarf on Assafat's head on that pic you posted. All though I will admit the design does not look the same, but then I am no expert on it.
P.S. Jump the shark? Are you saying I would jump Nancy Pa-lop-ski? That’s just mean, just kidding. LOL

That may prove my point even more. As we know the Globe is one of the most pc papers on the planet and even they leave open the possibilty that it looks like a keffiyeh.
anyway it seems like the matter has been resolved.

Is it any wonder...
... that the McCain camp won't allow Malkin to join in their conference calls with bloggers when she writes this sort of nonsense? The judgement of McCain's gang is mostly very poor, but they've got this one right - what a load of garbage. When you get in a hole Michelle, stop digging.

The very idea that DD would cave into the MM lunacy is the disturbing thing I see.

Bottom Line...
Movie Stars and TV personalities are 99% Moron, 1% plastic. Any more questions?

Gibson Girl
If you can get celebrities the likes of Dolly Parton and Loni Anderson to walk around topless, I'll be first in line booking an airline ticket.

As for MM's inability to distinguish between an ordinary scarf and a piece of religious paraphanalia, that's political correctness gone way overboard.

Michells' 1000 times better looking than what?
a. A dumpster;
b. A melting waxwork;
c. The blobby organic part that lives inside a Dalek; or
d. Wobbie's slightly used inflatable doll?

d. That slightly used inflatable

SSGT, Vic, Taft
SSGT: I like black cookware, since it hides burn marks....heh heh heh!!

As for the scarf, well, I am torn about it. I have a fringey scarf with flowers all over it. It was made in Mexico, and is usually worn during folklore dances.

In my opinion, sometimes a scarf is just a scarf. And sometimes we tend to give too much creedence to a simple piece of clothing.

Caligula...
you are as screwed up as the idiot whose name you adopted. Nobody here hates the muslims. We hate the radical fragment of the religion. Islam itself will not get you to Heaven but everyone is entitled to their beliefs. One is not entitled to murder in the name of their religion though.

How does this sit with your self-righteousness Taft?

That Being Said
It's just a scarf, I think if we make more out of it, the Islamists win by promoting fear instead of just ignoring it for the meaningless scarf it is...

R.Ray
I used to watch her,but after awhile I noticed a far left tilt to things she says and a lot of her guests. She is aiming to replace Oprah.

Rick
Not to mince words, but your edit is in error. Ms. Ray did not purchase the scarf. Please try to pay attention to the article.

Arafat
There's more to MM idiocy in that she bathes her hate in ignorance. Arafat was secular and not a jihadi.

"Fundamentalism is a widespread phenomenon on the {Israeli-Occupied} West Bank, as it is throughout the Arab world," said Dr. Hanna Nasr, a member of the PLO. The young radicals were as opposed to the PLO's vision of a democratic, secular Palestine state as they were to Israeli control of their land. ...Nasr found the trend "frankly scary."

I Think
A more appropriate boycott should be on the purchase of any AK style rifles. To me, that is more a symbol of terror than a scarf....

CriticalBill
