Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The surgeon general really needs to slap a health warning on The New York Times. My blood pressure increases a few points every time I read it. This week, the newspaper of record pimped the Next Great American Education Fad: In-school yoga classes.

According to the piece, "Less Homework, More Yoga, From a Principal Who Hates Stress," the head of Needham High School in the Boston suburbs is pushing "stress reduction" through better stretching and breathing. Principal Paul Richards, who last earned nationwide mockery when he ditched publishing the honor roll, is part-Oprah, part-Deepak Chopra, part-Richard Simmons and all edu-babble.

"It's not that I'm trying to turn the culture upside down," he's quoted telling the Times. "It's very important to protect the part of the culture that leads to all the achievement," he said. "It's more about bringing the culture to a healthier place."

And here I thought high school principals should make schooling, not "bringing the culture to a healthier place," their top priority. Silly me. Welcome to your new Nanny State nightmare.

Yoga classes are now a requirement for Needham high school seniors. To further ease the supposed burden on overworked students, Richards has "asked teachers to schedule homework-free weekends and holidays." Just what we need to turn around those one in 10 schools that are now considered "dropout factories," huh? Can't cut it in the classroom? Bend like a bridge, take five deep, slow breaths, and all will be dandy.

Why stop at yoga? Tantric chanting, here we come. And, hey, Kabbalah has done wonders for Madonna. Let's add hypnotism and acupuncture classes while we're at it. Hot stone massages? Bonsai tree-clipping? No Relaxation Technique Left Behind!

Some point to a number of tragic student suicides to justify larding up the school day with Tree Poses and Sun Salutations. But the school officials themselves admit the deaths were not related to stress. No matter. Richards is using them to forge ahead with "a movement to push back against an ethos of super-achievement at affluent suburban high schools amid the extreme competition over college admissions." It appears there are now more than 40 other high schools and middle schools that embrace the "Stressed Out Students" agenda. There's another yoga curriculum popular in California, Yoga Ed., that has trained 10,000 teachers in more than 100 schools nationwide.

And guess what else I discovered after trying to find out whether yoga was coming to a school near me? We are paying for this nonsense. The Yoga Ed. program, created by Hollywood spouse/socialite Tara Guber, was funded with taxpayer grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the federal Carol M. White Physical Education Program.

Bit by bit, the dumbed-down cult of mediocrity, secular extremism and multicultural madness has infected American public education. Instead of concentrating on the basics and then teaching children to manage and conquer their "stress" through internal discipline, we're removing every last source of possible damage to their egos.

Math test scores have plummeted. Solution: Remove the U.S. from international competitions.

Students are failing. Solution: Hide the honor rolls so the under-achievers don't feel bad.

Elementary pupils don't like drills and spelling tests. Solution: Fuzzy math and inventive spelling.

Families can't manage their time. Solution: Less homework, more yoga.

"A lot of these kids," lectures Principal Richards, "are being held hostage to the culture." No kidding. When The New York Times invited one of Richards' students to recommend stress-reduction techniques, he ended with this suggestion:

"Watch a short clip on YouTube (as long as you are not addicted). The amazing and often funny feats on the site are inspiring and often leave you feeling, 'Hey I want to do that!' This is a great attitude to have towards your work."

Watch feats of stupidity on YouTube. Yeah, that'll do wonders for American student achievement.

The only ones who need stress reduction right now are parents fed up with this runaway idiocy. If you think educrats are going to recover their senses any time soon, well, you know, don't hold your breath.

And we
wonder why our public school educated children don't fare as well against other countries in academics.

Just another reason
For Home Schooling

Vouchers - NOW
If there were ever an argument for school choice, this is it. Parents whose children are required to take yoga should have the option of removing their children to a place that EDUCATES students.

If Hillary wins the White House, the decline in scores and standards will accelerate exponentially. BTW, my own child will NEVER set foot inside a public school.

Yoga in School
Yoga is a RELIGIOUS discipline. Look it up.

Schools mandating such a practice are establishing the practice of a religion, and under the Constitution, such mandates are forbidden.

Check my post on Stossel's latest, and you'll get my sense of what the LAUSD is all about, and you'll get a clue about the maniacs running the asylum.

Let Ms. Guber funnel some dollars into hustling along a voucher program instead of setting up a religious sect in school. Then, let her pop in thrice a week to teach Yoga after hours. If she gets and keeps twenty students for longer than three weeks, I'll be astonished.

El-hi students have the attention span of a gnat in sushi bar's floor sink. I think kids will volunteer about as long as Ms. Guber would.

Typical Hollywood liberal: why don't I give you a good idea, and you go do it, and here's a couple of bucks for your trouble. How nice!

Yoga and Jesus: Out
I happen to agree that school time should not be used for mandated Yoga. However, another article on townhall today informs us that in Utah voters may soon choose a statewide school voucher program, in which case (if the vote passes) Utah taxpayers will be paying for religious education whether they will or no. I would just as soon pay for Yoga as Jesus or Creationism: none of these belongs in a school system financed by taxpayers. When will conservatives learn that their extremist right-wing goals are simply the mirror image of extremist left-wing goals?

You don't know what you're talking about

You're out of your mind and spouting the BS NEA talking points.
IF the voucher program passes the citizens of Utah will get some of OUR TAX MONEY back to help pay the costs of getting our kids out of the public schools that are failing because they waste time and OUR TAX DOLLARS teaching our kids garbage like Michelle is writing about in today's column.

There will be NO religious education in Utah public schools if the vouchers pass.
But THERE IS Muslim indoctrination/sensitivity "training" going on now, without the vouchers, that MY TAXES are paying for, AGAINST MY WISHES.

So stop with your liberal teachers union talking points. They're nothing but lies.

treasonous republicans
We all are. Thank God!!
When parents read of this kind of nonsense being introduced in the public school house, they generally all have the same retort:" Not in my school". That thinking leaves everything the crazies think of to ruin our youth unchallenged, in the mind and eye of a fool, anything not seen is not there.

treasonous republicans
Are you a parrot? You say the SAME thing about MM every week.

Michelle Malkin is an anchor baby, RAAAAAAK!

Stooge.

Apollyon67
That's the fantastic liberal NEA and Teacher's Union for ya.

Embracing mediocrity is their middle name.

The "dumbing-down" strategy is just another way to create more bums and losers, the core Dhimmicrat vote bloc.

GunnyG
Conspiracy theories generally turn me off, but your remark that dumbing down is an actual left wing stategy hit a nerve. You don't really suppose they are that smart, so you? Or that stupid, maybe?

Public Schools and Bottled Water
Public schools must be made to work; we pay for them and the facility has been built to accommodate the communities they are in. Could they be privatized and made more efficient--perhaps. Parents must take a bigger part in their communities and assist in all phases of the educational process. Education is a process, it is not a result. Our text books are a mess, they are too big and since they are, they cannot be covered in a normal year so much goes untaught. Generally, none of it is vetted, it is just a simple matter of teaching until the grading period ends (semester or quarter) and stop. What is not covered is lost and lazy teachers skip the hard stuff because their understanding and teaching expertise in certain areas is shaky. In mathematics, it is fractional work, word problems ,geometric proofs, and trigonometric identities that suffer. Consider bottled water as a parallel to school costs. We build and pay for water purification plants, we are charged monthly for sewer and drinking water in addition to an amortization cost for plants built. We don't trust what we have built and are paying for: we buy bottled water at a much higher price and continue to pay our home water bill. Redundant stupidity--a little learning is a dangerous thing.

GunnyG
t r is a parrot? Now Guns, why would you want to insult that species of Bird? Lets keep it in perspective. If we group the libs with morons, we only insult libs! That way, all other groups will not be offended if we don't associate a lib with them.

Roberto: I can't decide what I want to be tonight. Britney, or Elton!!

The only way this will ever
end is for the tax payers to quit funding public schools. In other words, eliminate public schools and make ALL schools private.

In twenty years
the entire country will be run by the Asians, who believe in homework and who are confining their Tai Chi and Yoga to early mornings before they go off to work or school.

This will not be a bad thing. The Chinese are rapidly taking over Canada and they are the hardest working, most cheerful people I meet every day. My computer guru is a Chinese guy named Stanley and I wish they could clone him. I am sure his Mama and Daddy did not agitate for him to stop doing homework and start doing permanent injury to his back.

On the other hand, if I want a break from stress, I watch this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTjiIq3ZGyw

My friend laughingly says that for me it is the equivalent of porn. He could be right.

New York times phobia
I read this article in the NY Times when it was first published. As far as I could tell, there was no editorialising in it - it just reported the fact that this school has chosen yoga as a method of attempting to relax its students. The article itself did not appear to condemn or condone it - it was just reported straight, as it should have been. The article included quotes from related individuals who were enthusiastic and from others who were sceptical.
It's fine to have an opinion on what this school is doing - but to blame the NY Times and make it seem like the paper was slanted in favour is plain wrong. Malkin knows that of course but it doesn't fit in with her NY Times phobia, does it? A disgraceful misrepresentation of the facts. Which is pretty much Malkin's modus operandi...

Savage99
The wife asked why the h*ll Muslims are so easily led down the garden path and I pulled up the CIA's world fact book on Afghanist for example, that had, if I remember correctly, a 75% illiteracy rate (just about as bad as D.C.!)

That means, 3 out of every ten can read and then tell the OTHERS where the bear sh*ts in the woods.

Transferred to the USA, that leaves people like Irving Slosberg able to drive around Florida (Election 2000) and buy votes for The Goreacle from idiots who can't read the frigging ballot.

BTW, just posted a story on the Leatherneecks in Al Qa'im winning hearts and minds.

As its been
stated before. America is "dumbing down", and it is happening rapidly. What ever happened to wanting to be the brightest, strongest and most proficient at what we do? No cheering at kids baseball games. Don't keep score in fear of one team winning over the other! I sure hope this mentality never spills over into the military. That will be the death of us all.

Hal: Robbie, why don't you dress up as Rosie again? You know how that turns me on!

treasonous republican
Guess that's a lot easier than, you know, actually thinking. I doubt that you'te capable of that.

SSGT
LOL! I stand corrected. Libs = morons and
morons = libs. Perfect.

Vic,

I agree. The ONLY reason that liberals stand in the way of school vouchers is that it'll make the unionized teachers actually have to PERFORM and be GRADED on their performance.

DC has the sh*ttiest schools in the nation and I think I read a few weeks back that they spend the most on students. Thus proving AGAIN that liberals should never be trusted with our tax dollars.

treasonous republican
Guess that's a lot easier than, you know, actually thinking. I doubt that you'te capable of that.

This is Exactly how I feel about all this stuff. I hate to hear about valuable education time being usurped by foolishness from any side. This will not help us keep up with the rest of the well educated world. This yoga story makes me equally as mad as when I hear conservatives trying to waste valuable class time with mandated school prayer or the pledge of allegiance, the teaching of Christian Bible myth in Science class, and abstinence only sex ed classes, or ANY sex ed class for that matter, "character education", marriage and family education etc.

How is any of this the job of a school? The schools should be teaching Reading, Writing, Math, real Science, Geography, Finance, and anything else that'll help pupils get a job and pay their bills one day. That's it. All this other stuff is just a grab by interest groups to foist their world view/interest upon a captive, impressionable audience. Do we really have so much time to kill in U.S. Public schools that we should be entertaining any of this fluff from both the left and the right.

Not to mention, all this stuff causes controversy and often lawsuits for schools and school districts, who can ill aford such actions. Just teach real subjects and leave all the esoteric crap to the families.

sawdust
NO LIE! haha. TR is aka TCA, who used to come here to insult people until he got banned. Then he'd come back under another handle like it's a big joke. Just another juvenile libturd that we try to ignore. Although that's like trying to ignore a fly buzzing around inside your house.

Is this what
"we will destroy you from within" means?

school days...
budbud says that schools should be teaching "reading, writing", amongst other things. But these kids doing yoga (in this NY Times article) are high school seniors - if they still need to be taught reading and writing by the age of 17 or 18 they probably aren't destined for academic greatness, are they? When I was that age, my school did something it called "ABC" - agreement to broaden the curriculum. We had lots of choices, including things like car mechanics, foreign travel and survival abroad, and even improvised drama (which I took with David Walliams of Little Britain fame - sorry, got to get that in!). Looking back, I don't for one second think that those classes impacted academic performance. Breaking up the monotony of academic teaching was a great idea, and although we didn't have yoga classes I can't imagine there would have been much protest if we did. It's wrong to assume that those years aren't stressful - getting ito the university of your choice, making decisions that will affect the rest of your life, is not an easy time for people who, let's face it, aren't the most mature on the planet. As the article in question concluded, if academic results go downhill this headmaster will be shown the door pronto.

Classical education
Always involved a physical component. We are remiss if we think the mind is divorced from the body.

In fact, studies have shown that younger children learn better when you give them time for recess than if you keep them in their chairs for hours on end. Exercise and proper breathing prepare the mind for learning.

I practiced yoga throughout undergrad and graduate, and it was a part of my 3.9 GPAs.

Yeah Budbud
teach the 6th graders how to put on a condom! Dumbing down america? You bet cha! Actually, I say start teaching the 1st graders how to put on condoms. That will get us closer to the dumb dumb land were heading towards. Thanks for your input. Dummy!

Just treasonous would be fine.
If it would be a choice between anchor babies like michelle and treasonous, intellectually lazy people, I'll take Michelle everyday of the week. Every reactionary policy of the left lead's further down the road to emptiness. The public school student's of today have absolutely nothing to offer society except to be future guest's on the springer show. It's not like GWB says that immigrant's are doing the job's american's won't do. The new American work force can not handle hard work even though they only have a high school diploma, they believe they are entitled to a cushy, high paying job. It is unreasonable of society to ask them to contribute to society while they are busy smoking blunt's and getting with the honey's. Yes, Yoga is another way to seperate children from real spirituality. The kid's are not just mentally soft but phyically soft as well, and parent's rich, poor and middle class don't care for the most part. The voucher program should be put in play nation wide now and dump the welfare for teacher's program they have now. One more reason the demoncat's have failed. They want national health care so we have the most healthy, spiritually dead, underachiever's in the world. Sound's like a left wing wacko stragedy to me. And no, it's not an original idea as usual.

Teachers
For many years I associated with teachers,90% were quite conservative. Management in schools are the dim wits who dislike working directly with children.

There is absolutely NO justification

or excuse for the job the public schools are doing, and have been doing for many years.

They are failing miserably!

Private and parochial schools, and home schooling are the only alternative for our children.

And, as CharlieS said above, the voucher money is OUR money simply being REFUNDED!

Get over it!

(Oh, and TR, I do believe that MM's parents are in the US on a Green Card... which makes them "legal" and therefore she is NOT an anchor baby!)

Folks, here is another prime example of the "dumbing down of america". Thanks for proving this point t r.

New SAT subjects
I expect that on the SAT exams part of the math section will be removed to allow for the new quesions concerning yoga, basket weaving and self awareness.

SSGT
tr couldn't manage a good coherent thought if you fed him a ton of Rosarita refrieds followed by an ex-lax shake!

He'd no doubt rather have a few million human locusts running around voting dhimmicrat and grabbing up benefits than one working family having a kid on US soil.

Kraut
"I expect that on the SAT exams part of the math section will be removed to allow for the new quesions concerning yoga, basket weaving and self awareness."

Along with a 1,000 word essay on "how they currently feel."

TR: As usual, you have no idea what

you're talking about. What a twit!

lilly writes:

When will you libs learn that your extremists left wing goals are destroying this country? Let's face it, teaching kids that we came from apes, the world is the result of the big bang, and all life crawled out of the swamp goes against the beliefs of the majority of Americans. How about we teach creationism in the public schools and you non-believers can start you own private school system which teaches evolution and atheism? Maybe I don't want my taxes used to finance your communist BS.

I am John Doe!

Roadkill58
Do you happen to be a prophet? If not, you should be. What a fantastic idea! Let the non-believers start their own schools.

Roberto: I got thru the 2nd grade!

Warrior's point
Warrior had a good point:

"Public schools must be made to work; we pay for them and the facility has been built to accommodate the communities they are in. Could they be privatized and made more efficient--perhaps. Parents must take a bigger part in their communities and assist in all phases of the educational process. Education is a process, it is not a result."

And this is just what is happening in Needham,
MA. The more controversial dropping of #d rank for % rank and now promotion of yoga is a
response to kids and parents complaining about the high stress levels and unfortunately the very
real suicides of recent years.

Needham is a very high achieving school district
and the school board is trying to comply with
the majority of the townspeople's wishes.

Whether there should be a state solution is
arguable.

SAD, BUT TRUE.........
Public schools fail because parents allow it to happen. Perhaps, as products of the same system, they just don't know any better. Or, the "I went through the system and I'm fine" attitude prevails. Seems like a vicious cycle that is only recognized by those completely outside of the process; and because they are external to the process, their credibility is easy to challenge.

Some schools even teach sports!!!
I mean, how ridiculous is that? A tiny fraction of school children will go on to become professional sportsmen, so there's no point in teaching sports is there? Anyone ever heard of a rounded education? You lot would be hilarious if you didn't take yourselves so seriously...

I look at historical trends and in grammar school, we not only said the pledge but also prayed at lunch. And America turned out some d*mn smart people. Now that the libstain's have fouled the schools with their asinine commie agenda, we're slipping farther and farther behind globally.

And their solution is to throw more money at it not go back to the basics.

Do some research Malkin.

I am sure that 90% of seniors from Needham go to
higher ed. and that Needham is in the top 10% of
schools not the bottom. This could, I'm sure be
found in a few minutes.

Ok I was right - 93% of seniors go to FOUR year
schools! The average SAT is 1170.

have ya'll heard the latest over the Flag 'flap' re: Veteran's Funerals?

Some dumbarse in, you guessed it, Riverside CA has caused a stir.

It had Col. Hunt really upset this morning on Fox News.

It has to do with the 11th fold during the Flag folding ceremony at the funeral. Someone protested saying "God". The ban was done at the White House level and the Vet. Admin.

NEA,
UAW, two entities that have not only long outlived their usefulness, but have become directly detrimental to the 'causes' for which they were formed.

correlation please
"When The New York Times invited one of Richards' students to recommend stress-reduction techniques, he ended with this suggestion:

[watch Youtube]

Watch feats of stupidity on YouTube. Yeah, that'll do wonders for American student achievement."

Uh? Did the NYT ask the students about how to
raise student achievement or reduce stress?

Question THers: Are all of Malkin's writings this
badly vetted/researched and illogical?

Bman / everyonesfacts
Firstly, I shouldn't rise to this but it's hard not to - Bman, you clearly have no answers to anything I have posted today other than to call me an anchor husband. Well done. You get a star on your homework for that one.
Everyonesfacts - as I pointed out in my first post on this thread, Malkin has deliberately mislead in this article from the first few lines. Everyone should go and read the original article, easily done by a search on the NY Times website, before agreeing with her. The article itself was a model of impartial reporting, something completely alien to Malkin.

Critical Bill
Shut up and go pull your rotten teeth like the rest of the subjects in Britainistan do.

GUNNY & SSGT
I collect books and often run into textbooks from the 20's, 30's, and 40's. Reading through those books is truely a humbling experience.

GunnyG
Resorting to "shut up" is kind of a new low for you. I mean, you've said far worse things, but normlly there is some sort of attempt to engage, albeit at the level of a five year-old. Clearly, wherever it was you went to school did not teach you much about, well, anything. Still, I suppose it is a sign that your posts are getting shorter so I ought to be thankful for that.

NYT article
I have to agree with Critical Bill the article
isn't praising just reporting.

The last 2 paragraphs:

“It’s not that your child isn’t going to have stress,” said Dr. Barr, an internist. “What is the job of high school? The job is to learn. The job is to prepare for the beginning of life. To be constantly stressed is to make it more difficult to learn.” While parents are generally supportive of Mr. Richards’s efforts, Dr. Barr said, opposition would be swift if achievement began to fall.

“If the results aren’t there,” Mr. Richards said, referring to Needham’s record of academic success, “they’d run me out of town pretty quickly.”

Read it yourself:

Gotta love that socialized medicine huh?

One guy pulled 14 of his own teeth. How many do you think he has left? 2, maybe 3?

And Critical Bill:
Sorry, but I don't go to the NY Times. Unless of course I want to see the latest article that could harm National Security. OUR national security.

And no I don't have any answers to anything you posted. I didn't read any of them. Except the 9:26 since it was addressed to me.

Have a good day. And get some flouride treatments. And some floss. They say it helps.

Critical Bill
Shouldn't you be more concerned with the state of Britainistan than with what is going on here in the colonies, eh wot? As I read your posts, I'm reminded of the dumba** euroturds who mewl and pule about the evil USA as they fall under the range of the Iranian's rockets.

The fact that you had to marry an American commie to escape Londonistan says it all.

Maybe you can volunteer to clean up some of those dirty hospitals that socialized medicine has created before you hightail it outta there.

Bman3
Yeah, I heard that yesterday. I wrote to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and voice my utter and complete distain for their actions. Then, lo and behold, this morning had a report on the radio that the Vets in general are very p#ssed. I think its gonna be overturned.

Roberto: Hal, did you get thru the 3rd grade?

BuckBean
I'd surmise that textbooks up until the early 70's where as well-written, until the scumbag hippies got into positions that enabled them to "revise" the truth ala Stalin, Marx, Mao, you know, their heroes.

Gunny, BMan
What a pair you are... firstly, BMan comes here to comment on an article that he then goes on to say that he wouldn't read out of principle and that he hasn't even read any of my posts before giving it the "anchor husband" line. Way to go. I take back that gold star - go to the back of the class, dunce. Then both of them double team to, I don't know, taunt me or something, about people pulling their own teeth in the UK and the state of the NHS. Like that has anything to do with anything. Way to go guys - really showing off your analytical skills here aren't you? Did either of you get past the second grade?

Boston suburbs actual need Yoga!
Maybe the Boston school system is trying to fill an immediate need for Yoga instructors for area residents!

Both my kids in Pvt, Catholic - Say Religion class relieves stress very well and prepares them for the days workload. Boston should do some research in that direction.

Apologies in advance:..I can't help getting the image of Yoga practitioners getting used for takedown and tackling dummies by the schools wrestling and football teams.

Bman3/GunnyG
Is this gonna be one of those days again. You two are killin me. LMAO!

CB: Hal, have you seen my toothbrush?

GunnyG and SSGT
What is going to happen to these 'children'?
After learning in High School that Yoga is the answer to stress they will no doubt be expecting to have a 'time out' when they get a real job in the real world.

When that 'time-out' does not come to them what then? Higher rates of suicide? Then whose fault will it be? George Bush of course.

I am going to tell my boss right now that I need a 'time-out' for Yoga. I am just so stressed this morning.

I'll let you know how it turns out. If I don't get fired that is.

Maybe that is something we can Hillary to look into. Mandated yoga time at the workplace.

Ever asked a Darwinist where the original spark of life came from? Or asked them how the cell (with all of it's highly specialized organelles) developed? Or ask why Darwin himself never claimed that life evolved spontaneously? His book was about the origin of species, not the origin of life. I see no reason why creationism and evolution need to be mutually exclusive. I, too, am John Doe.

apropos of nothing and yoga
Many of the posts here are apropos of nothing in
the article and don't make sense to me.

And as far as incorporating yoga into a regular
classroom, not phys. ed, I am against it. But
would have no problem if individual teachers
would want to do it if they think it works,
especially for teachers on a block system -
classes that last usually over 75 minutes.
You know get up and stretch for a couple of
minutes before we get back to academics.

But where it really has a place is in gym class.
This seems to be a better thing to learn than
kickball, or many other sports that are part of a
typical gym class. Not that you can't teach both.

Excellant Article
As usual Michelle Malkin is right on the money. Her ability to be concise and targeted in her commentaries has made her one of my favorites in the political spectrum. I'm just glad she's a conservative on my side!

Good morning, gentlemen.

I hate to admit it, but my youngest child (2nd grade) is taking yoga in her school. Thankfully, as a precursor to actual physical activity like running, jumping, etc.

Bman: I read about the flag, and the vets are going to ignore the ban. They will respect the families, "not some bureaucrat in DC".

If I understand you correctly, you believe NO taxpayer money should be spent on anything that ANY taxpayer opposes.

Utah voter here. Not really pertainent to my greater point, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

My point - Voter=taxpayer.

This is a pretty simple concept, but one I'm sure you have trouble grasping nonetheless.
Every year, billions of dollars are spent on programs that the majority of Americans would not support.

Billions are spent to ensure that multi-million dollar agricultural companies aren't growing corn.

Millions of dollars in NEA grants are given to "artists" whose inappropriate and pornographic works will never be seen by the general public. And rightly so.

Social welfare programs have been rife with graft and fraud from their inception.

Federal tax-dollars help fund abortion clinics across the country and around the world.

None of these programs, along with tens of thousands of others would pass your very own test. Which just goes to show, with liberals, the motivation is always idealogical and rarely, if ever, is it founded on the principle you claim to support.

It is clear that we American Taxpayers have entirely too little say in the spending habits of our elected representatives. More choice, more say in this matter is always, always, ALWAYS a good thing.

Voter=taxpayer.
Voter=taxpayer.

In fact, I love Michelle Malkin.

I wonder if my wife will let me?

I've been for school vouchers as is my Rep but the libs are too entrenched on that issue. So more and more people home school and the issue never gets fixed.

Like LBJ's 100 triilion dollar war on poverty that keeps going and going, this will be the same thing until we FORCE a change or the libturds die off, whichever comes first.

GunnyG,
you're my buddy so I feel OK saying you need to check CriticalBill's 10:41. He's right, we need to keep it personal to the person. Family members should be verboten in my opinion.

Having said that, any shot at TreasonousRepublican is a good one.

By the way, CriticalBill, when you post from a leftwing perspective on a rightwing site, it probably shouldn't surprise you if you get pounced. Why is it that the left tries to emulate Europe, except when it's convenient? Take Belgium, for example. Yes, they are having a crisis in their gov't, but they have SCHOOL CHOICE. It works for them. Having to compete with choice, the gov't has now become active in improving the quality of their teachers. You don't hear about that here.

EDUCATION DECLINE TIME LINE

.....Michelle ...

.....The decline of American education in the Public Schools began in the 1950's with "Government enforced intergration" and in the 1960's with LBJ's "Great Society" Socialist programs ...

.....The first thing to go was academic standards when the intergrated minorities could not keep up with the class ...then social promotions for those who could not pass even on the curve and lower standards ...diplomas became worthless and good students were cheated out of a quality education ...

.....The second thing to go was school discipline ...when the minorities realized that when disciplined or prodded to work harder ...all they had to do was cry racism and they were off the hook ...

.....The coup de Grace was LBJ's Socialist Welfare Programs that virtually destroyed the core two parent family especially in the poorer neighborhoods ...

.....Combine a Public School System with low academic standards and little or no discipline with kids from fatherless single parent homes and you have a ticking time bomb ...this is not rocket science ...it did not happen overnight ...it grew like a cancerous tumor .....COLOSSUS

I agree with Chopper on your post. Getting back to the article:

I have no problem with yoga in the school, as long as it is in PE class, and it is used for stretching prior to old-fashioned exercise. I have a problem having some rich Hollywood chick (not PC, I know), getting money from the gov't for this. She can put up her own. When our parents wanted to have the Texas Pledge also read in the morning, WE THE PARENTS put up the money for the posters for the classrooms. We didn't petion the Gov't for it.

Exactly -- because trying to do yoga actually wastes considerable time, which is why I concluded it as useless; and I came to this conclusion in 1992 when I still had a Hindu-fanatic mindset.

A few points
1. Why does anyone even respond to Treasonous Republicans? Arguing that someone who did something legally can't disagree with someone who does something illegally is ridiculous. If I legally earn $10,000 this month, am I not allowed to rail against people who stole $10,000 this month?

2. The NYT sets its agenda by what it chooses to report on.

3. Anyone with any sense of logic understands that Malkin did not call Needham High a "dropout factory".

Make the World Go Away....
and get it off of my shoulders. This attitude is handicapping children by coddling them. They won't be prepared to function in the real world.

It is a pity that these kids will go into adulthood without ever having to take responsibility for anything. How will they be able to take responsibility for their own success or failure?
They won't, it will always be someones else's fault and they will continue looking to government to fix everything.

Exactly what Liberals want, a people unable to think for themselves, support themselves, or even dream for themselves.

"3. Anyone with any sense of logic understands that Malkin did not call Needham High a "dropout factory".

Maybe, but Malkin is definitely assigning
responsibility in turning "drop out factories" to
the Needham High or the way they run schools. It
is illogical.

One poster wrote how in the work world there
are no timeouts. That is true to some extent
but less so than in school. In the work world
outside of school I found you could actually
schedule breaks as you wanted - go to the bathroom, drink machine, call someone, etc.
Yoga might be a good strategy when work is over
or at your desk. Different strokes . . .

I would argue that the kids they are worried
about have more stress than workers in the real
world. Much more than I had. Of course, much
stress is about perception.

the school written about in the ny times article is one of the highest achieving high schools in the country. the principle concedes that stress on students is a good thing, up to a certain point. stress encourages kids to learn. but too much stress can interfere with learning. the article concludes:

“If the results aren’t there,” Mr. Richards said, referring to Needham’s record of academic success, “they’d run me out of town pretty quickly.”

Imagine that. A school choosing its own curriculum with the goal of enriching the lives of its students. and conservatives are against this because?

Accuracy of MM's piece 1 of 2
Critical Bill tells us – “Everyonesfacts - as I pointed out in my first post on this thread, Malkin has deliberately mislead in this article from the first few lines. Everyone should go and read the original article, easily done by a search on the NY Times website, before agreeing with her.”

Pains me to say it, but Bill is correct in this one point. From the original article, there is no mention of the Yoga classes being a requirement – merely an option. And, the school in question is clearly an elite school, full of white kids from well-to-do families – standard rich elite white liberals.

This is still America, so I’ll have to state that even rich elite white liberals should have a right to choose what they would like taught in the schools they pay for and that their children attend. I’m more than happy to leave situations like this one to local control.

However, what Everyonesfacts (perhaps the most pretentious “handle” I can recall encountering) and Critical Bill fail (in my estimation) to consider is the more far reaching consequences that something like this could lead to.

While an elite rich white liberal school like Needham is unlikely to suffer any serious academic set-backs from offering yoga instead of another more rigorous academic option (and despite principle Richardson’s obvious attempt to reduce high academic outcomes, which he no doubt believes to be part of the mythical “white privilege” liberals believe white people - all white people, even the poor and disadvantaged white people – must atone for. For example, this gem from the NYT article – “"Mr. Richards is just one principal in the vanguard of a movement to push back against an ethos of super-achievement at affluent suburban high schools"), there is a potentially deleterious side that still must be considered.

Accuracy of MM's piece 2 of 2
The problem will be unlikely to be expressed at yoga practicing rich white schools; but, as it so often goes, once one school adopts something “new” and “exciting” other schools – burdened with unimaginative management – quickly adopt their own version.

Yet, one cannot image poor inner-city schools wishing to adopt yoga, a practice popular with the rich white elite liberal oppressor class. They’ll probably elect to go with something more in keeping with the “keepin’ it real” attitude of their student body’s – Rap and Hip Hop.

This is where Michelle’s argument about “Just what we need to turn around those one in 10 schools that are now considered "dropout factories," huh?” begins to have credence.

Yoga is not antithetical to academics – I’m not a practitioner myself, but I know many highly intelligent and successful people who are. On the other hand, Rap and Hip Hop, and the thug lifestyle they glorify are diametrically opposed to academics, preferring a “street education”.

Inner-city schools students don’t have academic rigor stress problems, they tend to have “dangerous to go to school and try to succeed” stress problems. So, when such schools offer Rap classes to help reduce the stress, they’ll end up simply reinforcing to students that education is of little value to them, and that they should devote themselves to the pleasures of the moment.

But, as well-intentioned rich white elite liberal ideas tend to go, such unintended consequences are just about par for the course.

You should learn to spell your arguments to be believable.
The word you were hunting for is--misled--obviously you didn't pay attention in government school

Liberals are abject cowards
If Lilly is a teacher, then all the more reason to home school.

for Critical Bill
Critical Bill writes: "A tiny fraction of school children will go on to become professional sportsmen, so there's no point in teaching sports is there? "

You're throwing that example up to us???

Guess what, I don't think competitive sports should be in school either. There will always be kids who are too short or too small or too fat to compete effectively in football or basketball or hockey, and they're just going to be benched. Health education should include aerobics, swimming, bicycling, and other activities that all kids can do. Because it's the LESS physically fit kids--the bookworms--that need the most exercise, whereas a competitive sports program rewards and selects for the most athletic kids right off the bat.

And I would get rid of drivers' ed too.

Malkin is of Filipino ancestry.
If you don't understand why someone of Filipino history would hate the Japanese, you don't know anything about the history of the Pacific.

Malkin is the ONLY notable American conservative to have written an entire book defending the wholesale incarceration in detention camps of Japanese-Americans during World War II. I'll bet she secretly wishes we had exterminated the entire Japanese race.

You write: "However, what Everyonesfacts... and Critical Bill fail (in my estimation) to consider is the more far reaching consequences that something like this could lead to."
I didn't try to in my original post. I merely pointed out that the only person doing any pimping here is Malkin - pimping a version of a story that is very clearly incorrect, as you discovered yourself upon reading the article in question. As for the consequences, I thikn everyone is getting slightly carried away. The consequences are that some kids did yoga at school, others didn't. This hysteria is a little far fetched in my opinion.

for Critical Bill
Critical Bill writes: "I can't imagine many people (apart from yourself) would want to ban sports on schools but most of the reasons people give here to argue against yoga is that it isn't academic."

No, I don't think that is what is REALLY bothering the folks here, nor is it what bothered Malkin.

What is bothering them is that conservatives are strong believers in competition as the way that things get better. And they are dead set against the enforced leveling of outcomes that is at the heart of all socialist societies.

What this school principal seems to be suggesting, is that there are more important things in life than competitive striving for achievement. Implying that kids (and adults) who don't work hard and don't try to do the best they can should still be entitled to as much as others. And that strikes at the heart of the economic conservative ethos.

A similar principle holds with the military. "GunnyG" is quite properly horrified at the idea that young people shouldn't be the best they can be. Because in combat, slackers can get killed and they can get their buddies killed too or other disasters. In the military, young recruits are trained to push themselves to the peak of what they are capable. That's how you win battles.

SteveL
As a group, MM (and me) have probably gotten over the Japanese. Not having been born "over there," the prejudice as second hand.

As for MM being the only person of Asian descent to "approve" of the detention, I add this: Senator Sam Hayakawa made comments about his own family's detention (in Canada) which angered many Japanese in America because he didn't agree with paying restitution (if I remember right). I think he also said "it did them some good." Imagine that.

It should also be said that the rather large population in Hawaii was never "detained" because martial law had been declared in the islands.

as = is
See what a public school education gets you!?

No demand for excellence being made...
because students cannot cope with having flunked their spelling test because they didn't study the list of words assigned as homework, because they just needed to relax a bit and parents tell them that they don't have to because that teacher is just demanding too much. Yet, these same parents then blame the teacher because little Johnny can't spell.

Survival of the fittest, I guess, isn't reason enough to actually teach students that grades are directly related to how much effort the student puts into learning the work assigned or that their own personal success in the real world will be directly related to their ability to take personal responsibility for that success and/or failure.

SteveL
Not sure I agree with your interpretation of this. The primary reason given for these yoga classes is relaxation, and I don't see that as being tantamount to the socialist conspiracy you seem to be reading into it. As I've said before, we had these kind of classes at my school (see my second post of the day), and it was a very competitive school, both in academic and sports terms. Socialist is wasn't. As other posters have pointed out, the school in the NY Times article is also very competitive, and I don't think anyone is telling these kids not to try to be the best they can be. If all of a sudden these kids decide en masse to skip college and settle for a Mcjob then I'm sure this headmaster will not last long.
And YLG - thanks. My mother is an argumentative old so and so too. Ask Gunny for details of my fanclub.

Roberto: sophia, its time for your grooming!

steve l
the reason that you got a false impression of what the principle of the needham school was saying is because michelle malkin wanted you to get the wrong idea. the stress reduction program was implemented to enhance student preformance. as i noted in an earlier post, the article in the times is clear in this regard. it is the belief of the principle that some stress is good for kids. stress encourages learning. but the principle believes that too much stress can become an impediment to learning. this program has nothing to do with what malkin calls "the cult of mediocrity." this is a program to relieve stress for high achieving students. as principle richards said in the conclusion of the article:

“If the results aren’t there,” Mr. Richards said, referring to Needham’s record of academic success, “they’d run me out of town pretty quickly.”

i ask again, what is wrong with a program implemented to enhance performance and relieve stress? would you have the government pass a ban on yoga in public schools? what if it worked? would you care?

From Amazon: "Whitney [the high school the author studied] students are driven and well-rounded, but they are also sleep-deprived and often subjected to extreme parental pressure. The downside of life at Whitney is that a focus on high grades and college placement sometimes takes the place of the joy of learning, and worse yet, sometimes leads some students to cheat. Still, as Humes's engaging narrative reveals, the triumphs far outweigh the inevitable shortcomings. Unfortunately, the model Whitney provides is easy to identify but not easy to reproduce."

missing the point
I think a post like farmer's wife's misses the point
of the principal (remember the principal is your
pal - free spelling tip for y'all) this is not aimed
at the kids who are failing tests but those that
are doing everything in their power to 100% on
everything - including living on 3-4 hours sleep,
cheating, etc.

Refer to School of Dreams_ or this article about

stress mentioned in the NYT article:

From the grey lady so you know it's true!)

The principal is trying to focus on this.
Whether yoga is the best method I would say no.
But I guess that is but one strategy that the
committee looking into stress will suggest.

Is Pilates a Religion, Too?
There are many different yoga schools and practices. Most focus on physical exercises like stretching and controlled breathing. There is nothing religious there.

But the real question is why don't we focus on rigorous academics? Let's try exercising young people's minds.

farmer's wife
malkin writes a baseless attack on a program intended to relieve stress for high achieving high school students and you make some sort of bizarre connection between that and illiteracy. many public schools in this country are failing their students. needham high isn't one of them. not only is neeham giving its students a first class education, but it also has a principal who is concerned with his students' ability to cope with the demands that that education puts on them. what exactly is your problem with a school district choosing a curriculum that works best for its students? are you afraid that yoga will be proven beneficial to these students? do you care if it works? as the principal told the ny times:

“If the results aren’t there,” Mr. Richards said, referring to Needham’s record of academic success, “they’d run me out of town pretty quickly.”

Seek First to Understand
You might want to note the number of execs and professionals who practice yoga before dismissing it. Yoga can be a powerful tool for increasing your ability to focus intensily and bring all of your mental capabilities to bear on an issue.

Especially if you happen to be a teenager, with rampaging hormones, a world full of distractions, and much angst.

I am a senior engineer and project leader who leads multi-disciplinary teams of professionals in addressing problems with possible revenue impacts to our companies of hundreds of millions of USD a year.

And I teach yoga.

if you want a good education, pay for it
1) call them "government" schools, not "public" schools. This will remind us that such schools are subject to all the known problems of other forms of nonmarket provision of goods and services.

2) replace all government schools with free-market schools which will do a better job at lower cost.

3) if you really must "provide education for the poor," don't force 82% of the students in America into a coercive welfare system; instead, provide vouchers to the poor, the same as food stamps. But frankly, if free market schools provide education to the poor in places like Uganda, it should work even better in America.

To sum up: if you want a good education, pay for it. To ask others to pay for "free" education is to surrender to others the power to decide what is good for you and your children.

Doc
Dare I say yes?

Bob Novakaine
"i ask again, what is wrong with a program implemented to enhance performance and relieve stress?"

Answer...this would not have been a blip on the radar if not for the principals prior decision to not publish the honor roll. This is the very definition of a slippery slope where mediocrity becomes the norm over time.

You may be able to explain the yoga, but the honor roll position is the smoking gun. This prinicipal is more interested in making the underacheivers feel good than raising the bar. Our public schools are moving in the wrong direction.

Yoga, Lilly and school choice
I do yoga sometimes. It is great for relieving stress. However, mandating it for students seems ridiculous. When I was in high school, we had to take PE, and we could choose what PE class we wanted to take. In elementary school, we had to take PE but didn't have a choice.

I think having PE (a period spent each day doing some sort of exercise) is great, especially with all the obesity, etc. Why not offer yoga as an option, along with aerobics, soccer, etc. Whatever kids want to do. Requiring yoga seems bizarre.

And I agree with Michelle about homework, etc.

Lilly, I think you misunderstand the First Amendment. It guarantees people the right to religious freedom and forbids a mandated state religion. when parents are allowed the choice to send their kids to whatever school they like, that is not forcing them to send the kids to a religious school. It is not a state mandate. therefore, it does not violate anyone's rights.

Return to Basics
Actually, I think basics are Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography, History, what we used to call 'citizenship' and science.

All the above WITH a good smattering of Physical Education (Yoga's okay with me, but sports and calesthenics are okay too)Music and Art.

This would give kids a well-rounded education.

We started going downhill (and kids started getting more unhealthy) when we dropped PE and other 'electives' like music, and art from the cirriculum. These are all great stress-relievers.

My mom was educated in a one-room schoolhouse. They had a full-range of coursework that included art, drama, daily physical exercise, music as well as the 'basics.'

My mom's brother was also educated there, and up into his 80's you could give him a list of complex numbers (i.e. 7,493 plus 8,012, plus...) several lines long and he could add them up in his head and give you the result in just a few minutes!

All before calculators and computers and he didn't use his fingers or toes either!

Both my mom and uncle were bright and intelligent until they died in their 90s.

Mr. Novakaine....
As an adult who survived the high demands made on me during my years as an over achieving student, I recognize the over emphasis of stress being made as an excuse for one's own failures.

I have no problem with Yoga. My observation is just my own opinion. I do not expect total agreement, but I do believe that there are others who are able to discern the meaning of my post.

More and more people look for and need excuses for anything and everything that does not go their own way. There is not enough expectation of excellence and self motivation in the public education system.

Bob Novakaine
This sort of feel good culture that you seem to be so invested in is starting to reach the work place.

Yes, young adults need to be able to cope with stress in order to function in the work place, however, removing stress (no homework weekends, no posted honor roll) is not learning to deal with stress it is keeping stress out of their lives.

I am a hiring manager at a company. The other week I had a young adult (fresh from college) come to an interview...with his father!! The father was there to make sure that he got the right package and that this was the right environement for him. I thought this just must be one of those one off things, but I told my wife the story that night. My wife works in staffing, and guess what...it is not just a one off thing. They have a term for it and everything. Helicoptor parents (because they hover).

This generation is being labeled gen Y. Because they are famous for asking why. But not as in the positive -- question world around you kind of why. This is why as in...why should I have to do that? Why can't you ask someone else to do that?

farmer's wife
thank you for your reply. although i do not doubt that it happens, in this particular case, stress is not being used as an excuse for failure. these students are highly successful. the principal is seeking to enhance that success by limiting the level of stress these high achieving kids are dealing with. again, i ask you, what if it works? would you still oppose it if it produces tangible results?

but i have no idea what this has to do with teaching high achieving high school students coping techniques like yoga to relieve some stress. again, the principal of this school told the nytimes that stress is good. stress spurs learning. but too much stress can be an impediment to learning. you understand that, right? that seems like a pretty simple proposition. the principal is, therefore trying to relieve stress to ENHANCE PREFORMANCE. what is wrong with that?

All (Part I)
In an email:

I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of
a bird feeder it is, as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food.

But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue.

Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table ...
everywhere!

Then some of the birds turned mean. They would
dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had
fed them out of my own pocket.

And others birds were boisterous and loud. They
sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at
all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food.

After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned
up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio.

Soon, the back yard was like it used to be ... quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal.

Now let's see ....
Our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic
citizen.

Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen
by an emergency room doctor; your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't speak English.
