Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Independence Day is the most significant of our political holidays. Without the 4th, there would be no President’s Day or Memorial Day. As we enjoy comfortable lives in the world’s dominant power, it is hard to imagine the circumstances facing Americans in 1776. The colonists represented a string of settlements along the Atlantic coast, hemmed in between the ocean and an inhospitable wilderness inhabited by often hostile Indians.

As fighting broke out between the colonists and British troops, the early Americans faced a stark choice: submit to London and sacrifice their liberty, or rebel against the mightiest empire on Earth and face prison or death if they failed. We all celebrate the Founders for making the first choice, but how many of us would have pledged our own “lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor,” as did the signers of the Declaration of Independence?

Frankly, we have it easy today. And we owe many of our advantages as Americans to the courage and fortitude of those who stood up for liberty on that July 4th many years ago. Of course, the fact that we are better off than the Founders does not mean that we don’t face any challenges. Just pick up a newspaper.

The economy has slowed and times are uncertain. People are losing their homes and the stock market is falling. America is at war in Iraq and Afghanistan, while terrorist groups like al-Qaeda remain a threat.

Congress continues to spend wildly, and the impending retirement of the baby boomers will create a financial tsunami from Social Security and Medicare. Our educational system is failing to teach our children reading, morality, or citizenship. Energy prices are racing out of sight.

Yet partisanship reigns supreme. For the last 20 years the Bushes and the Clintons have dominated American politics. While they all can be—and deserve to be—criticized for many things, they all also genuinely believed that their policies would benefit the nation. But vitriol and hatred have replaced civility and comity in the public square.

Indeed, for many people politics is but a game– red team versus blue team. Policies don’t matter. Only victory counts. As a result, whether its Iraq, energy prices, or budget deficits, there is no hint of bipartisan cooperation.

It’s a sad picture.

But the Founders would understand. After all, politics in the early republic was not for the faint-hearted. It often was rowdy, nasty, and personal. And creating a new government isn’t the easiest of tasks.

The Declaration’s signers also likely would be hopeful. Americans have spent more than two centuries overcoming big challenges. There’s no reason they would believe we weren’t up to the job today.

Despite the fact many people are dissatisfied with the two major presidential contenders, I believe the Founders would have been impressed with both of them.

There’s John McCain, who would be the oldest man ever elected president. He was a rowdy young man, served heroically in the military, survived years as a prisoner of war, overcame political setbacks, and won his party’s nomination despite opposing many of his party’s policy positions. He might not be your cup of tea, but surely he’s an impressive politician.

Then there’s Barack Obama. Even many Republicans find themselves attracted to his rhetoric of change and unity. More important still is his race.

The Founders recognized that they were making a pact with the devil when they sanctioned slavery. But they believed the necessity of a union that included the southern colonies outweighed the moral and practical horrors of slavery. Leaders like Thomas Jefferson understood the potential for disunion that lurked beneath the infamous slave clauses of the Constitution.

So I believe those who signed the Declaration would be pleased that the American nation that came through the searing experience of the Civil War and reunited, eventually—after much hardship and pain—came to welcome black as well as white as part of our political union. They would recognize that Barack Obama’s candidacy helps heal two centuries of racism and demonstrates America’s uniqueness to the world.

In short, the men who signed the Declaration 232 years ago would be impressed with the nation they helped create. “Well done,” I believe they would say, while enjoining us not to rest on their—and our—laurels. For truly we have much yet to do. But as Americans, we should never doubt our ability to prevail, whatever the challenge.

Unimaginable
We have so overly Romanticized the Founders that they would not recognize the land we have created.

Our country completely changed after 1791 and the passage of our sacred Bill of Rights. Then it changed again after the Civil War. Sadly, the Patriot Act again changed our way of life, at least until the American people wake up from their collective slumber and demand a full return of our rights.

Colonial America looked nothing like the United States of today.

My Pet Goat
"Sadly, the Patriot Act again changed our way of life"

The real sadness I see is individual liberties being sacrificed on the altar of secularism. The freedom of speech being replaced by politically correct jargon, the freedom of the press being threatened by the "fairness doctrine", the freedom of religion being attacked by people who call us religous folks out of tough and intolerant.

No...our freedoms are not being removed by the Patriot Act...they are being removed by the godless elitists posing as Americans today. To that I say our Founding Fathers would be most unimpressed.

The American Patriot
The American Patriot to me is one who loves their Country and wish America no harm for any reason.

The American Patriot is male, female and children of every nationality, race, ethnic background and religion who wish America no harm for any reason.

The American Patriot are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom who wish America no harm.

The American Patriot ia proud of their flag and the Statue of Liberty which "welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed" and wishes America no harm.

The American Patriot takes pride in the greatest Warriors in the history of man - the American Soldier and wish America no harm.

The American Patriot looks at their sons and daughters in uniform with tears in their hearts and pride on their faces as their children goes off to defend the greatest country ever on this planet and wish America no harm.

The spouse and children of the American Patriot with anxiety in their hearts and faces shining with pride watch as their American Warrior leaves to defend America.

The American Patriot lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world.

The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness and the right to self determination and wish America no harm.

The American Patriot does not want to weaken America in dangerous times for political reasons.

The American Patriot does not put ideology first and America second to harm it in hopes it will learn a 'lesson'.

God Bless America and its' Patriots!

The American Warrior
The American Warrior is someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness.

The American Warrior is someone who frightens many people because they live in denial of reality, the American Warrior reminds those people that violence exists in the world.

The American Warrior has the capacity for violence towards those who threaten America and the American way of life.

The American Warrior is a constant reminder that there are terrorists in the land and those that wish to destroy America are already here on American soil.

The American Warrior on September 11, 2001, rushed towards the danger instead of fleeing from it, intent on defending and helping those American citizens in danger. Many American Warriors gave their lives that day and many more were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for America and its citizens.

Most Americans are glad that they were not on the planes that crashed into the WTC and the Pentagon - the American Warrior wished they had been on those planes because they might have made a difference.

American Warriors were on United Airlines Flight 93 and defended unto death America and its citizens with the cry "lets roll".

The American Warrior waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, America and its citizens.

"There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men." - Edmund Burke

This 4th of July, I salute the American Warrior, both living and dead. Men and women who serve in the Armed Forces, Police Forces, Fire Departments and ordinary civilians who rush forward to our defense instead of running from danger.

The American Warrior who wishes no harm to America - God Bless You!

Retired Geek
Enough already.

I have to
disagree with the author although I understand her patriotic feelings. I think our Founding Fathers would be shocked at what we, the citizens allow and support today. After all, they went to war over much less.

3wire...
Why should Retired Geek stop with his posts? Frankly, I find them timely, refreshing, truthful, and poignant.

Thank you, Retired Geek, for posting your comments on these threads. Keep it up!

And thanks to all American patriots who have sacrificed and served to protect and defend America, to secure the freedoms we Americans enjoy. I will surely be thanking you all tomorrow on Independence Day when I see our American Flag waving everywhere, when I see the parades in your honor, and when I see the fireworks explode over our capital city. Yes, I will be standing there waving my American flag and I will clap for our veterans, our military, our police, and our firefighters as they pass by me in the parade. I will thank God for you and the sacrifices you and your families have made for this great country.

If 3wire doesn't like reading your posts, then I invite him to moveon ;-)

The Scorecard...
Osama Bin Laden=1 America=0

The Demise Of America's Women ...
America doesn't become a great nation and world leader again, without developing a culture that supports, encourages, and honors women. For now, the demise of America's women and the imminent death of the Black woman continue its path.

A Few Thoughts
"Sadly, the Patriot Act again changed our way of life, at least until the American people wake up from their collective slumber and demand a full return of our rights."

My Pet Goat is spot on...I have given up trying to keep count of my friends, neighbors and relatives who have disappeared in the middle of the night and are now wilting away in American forced-labor or “reeducation” camps. I too long for a return to our God-given liberties...back to the time of old when we could publically criticize our government in newspapers or on the internet.

Retired Geek...great posts, thank you. Unfortunately, the ideals you expressed are completely incomprehensible to the modern liberal mind.

Can you imagine the NYT of the late eighteenth century? “Colonist rebel leader George Washington sneaks across the Delaware in preparation for surprise attack on Our Majesty’s forces.”

Aintnojoke
As long as the almost 80% illegitimacy rate in the black community continues, the black women in this country will continue to struggle and spiral. You must first convince these women to keep their legs closed until marriage, or you are just spinning your wheels.

Obama's candidacy helps heal racism?
How can Obama's( and his wife's, and minister's, and friend Pflegr's) appeal to "change" this nation be helpful? They play the "race card" every chance they get. Any criticism of them on policy issues, moral issues or even personality is deemed racist. In fact, the argument can be made that he and his cronies are doing MORE to encourage a racial divide.
Add to that his socialist policies that would take cash from workers to hand out to non-workers and to mandate "public service"(that used to be called slavery) and there is nothing there that anyone can vote for.
Pesonality? Let him go on American Idol if that is where his talents lie.

proud and sick
I'm sure this is the freedom for which our FOUNDING FATHERS died...

for 17 girls in GLOUCESTER MA to get pregnant.

they make me sick.

In retrospect.....
The "progressives" complain how horrible a place America is. They cite slavery, the women's struggle for equality, mistreatment of prisoners at Abhu Graib, the patriot act, etc.,etc. They tend always to overlook progress, or America's greatness which brings immigrants in droves looking for a better life. They overlook the fact that of those terrorists at Abu Grab whom were released, 50 were recaptured on the battlefield or committing terrorists acts.
They fail to address the barbaric acts of Islamic terrorism worldwide in equal fashion. Which is the real threat to western civilization. Abraham Lincoln during the civil war suspended Habeas Corpus. He shut down opposing newspapers and arrested dissenters to include the grandson of Francis Scott key. Today he is considered one of our greatest presidents. History, in retrospect has a way of clarifying truth and necessity.

u don't know what u got til it's gone
Mac in NJ....

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do or say.

I was in the USSR in the mid-80's where we had a KGB agent on our tour with us...

and one morning we woke up to have one person not show for breakfast...he was gone the whole day...when he returned, he was silent and very solemn the rest of the trip...and he was no longer taking photos....his camera was ...??

I kissed the ground at JFK when we landed.

I have family there...and they are still struggling with the concept of democracy.

the south
need to check your history books.

slaves were brought into this country and sold in New England states, not in the south and old Abe was in favor of slavery until they needed justification of the war between the states. It was not a civil war for the north invaded the south over export taxes.

other than that, a good article

Gov. Jerkinator at it again!!!!!!!!
WHY did they elect this Austrian TURD!! He is NO conservative as Rush TRIED to tell CA voters who were so desperate to get rid of Gray Doofus and for good reason.

They HAD a real conservative and THREW HIM UNDER THE BUS. Now we have the left liberal Uber Rino Jerkinator doing the bidding of the San Fran Fruit Salad Society.

He not only wants to ban sales of fireworks at roadside stands he wants them out of the state@ This guy is a 200 lb. NANNY in suit. He fell for the psycho-greenies when they wept oceans of tears about that glorified VULTURE, the CA condor.

More condors are minced in wind turbines ever month than have been POSSIBLY poisoned to death by lead compounds. Those compounds do NOT come from hunting bullets but in order to limit hunting and shooting opportunities as much as possible without trying to pass unpassable laws they backdoor us with THIS drivel.

Is there ANY more innocuous hobby than traditional black powder shooting? Even non shooters who don't care much for guns and hunting love to watch us shoot and even ask to try one of our flinters.

In the name of Great Zeus's butthole can anyone tell me why banning pure soft lead (the only kind good for shooting) round balls is a priority in CA? I'd like to know because this stupidity is spreading like wildfire.

American Patriot
Retired Geek, Thank you!! I love reading your posts. As the mother of a soldier serving in Iraq at this very moment, I would like to remind all of these anit-war posters, that our brave military members are all VOLUNTEERS!!! No one was dragged off KICKING AND SCREAMING to the war. They know what the consequences of losing are. Yet, they continue to re-enlist. My son with 14 years of service. I am very proud of all of them. You don't support the troops unless you support the mission, is how they feel. They are protecting your families, without having been drafted!! So, quit crying about the war already. WE ARE WINNING, much to the dismay of the Democratic party!!

dream...

Imagine if the Congressional Democrats who DID vote to authorize military force in Iraq actually supported their vote.

Imagine what it would have been like for Iran and Syria to look across the pond... And see 300 million Americans staring back, saying the words, "Go ahead punks, make our day!"

How far ahead would Iraq be if the Revolutionary Guard in Iran was afraid to even look across the border much less send bombs and executioners to greet our nations finest young men?

How many friends would Osama have today IF people like Senator Murtha were calling for their heads instead of calling them a lawyer?

Funny we can all find Democrat voters to agree on that "silly" victory thing. Democrat leaders just cannot understand what simple men and women can. Go figure.

Greatest nation on earth
It's quite simple really. Live somewhere else for the first 20 years of your life and then come to the United States, it's amazing how quickly your perspective changes. Here there is freedom and opportunity, everywhwere else on the planet there are limitations and restrictions.

In my opinion the founding fathers would regard the current state of the US with mixed feelings at best. I believe they would be horrified that we allow socialism on the scale that we do. It seems we have learned nothing from the 20th century's examples of continuous socialist failure. I believe they would be horrified that we allow the socialist enemy in our midst. I believe they would be disgusted that we have allowed leftist policy to corrupt our institutions and way of life.

I beleive they would be heartened by the fact that Americans still believe in God in vast numbers. I believe they would be encouraged by the resiliency of patriotic Americans. They would be proud of those who stand and fight for their rights. They would be proud that we have achieved the status we currently enjoy.

As far as Obama is concerned. I agree that the founding fathers would find the nomination remarkable and in line with their vision for the country. The fact that the first black nominee to the highest office in the land is a black supremacist, muslim, and hard left marxist would make them want to wretch.

What the Founders would think
I think they would be appalled. They thought we would need Statesmen not politicians in the position of chief executive. They were servant statesmen first and politicians way down on the list. What we have today are politicians only I have yet to see anything remotely resembling a statesman in the whole bunch.

Truth:Objective or Subjective
I agree with most of this article, however the freedoms that we enjoy can not and will not be preserved on good intentions alone. The intentions must be Constitutionally correct, and we must be abiding to it. This means truth and right must be defined objectively, not subjectively. Americans will not preseve our heritage based on the postmodern understanding of truth which they have been taught and are being taught.

Bush and Clinton, Obama or McCain may have their ideas on how America should be, but I want to know, what did our forefathers mean and intend when they set it up? If their intentions and meaning are not objectively interpretable then anything goes. It will be just the "will to power". That is what we have today.

Teach what?

"Our schools are failing to teach our children reading, morality and citizenship."

Excuse me?

I am a teacher. I am not hired to teach either morality or citizenship. That is the parent's job! I am not here to raise your children.

That is why "education" is so screwed up; parents no longer accept responsibility for their own children. Just blame someone else.

Our Founders
As Norm correctly stated the founders would be bewildered by the way so many "Americans" feel socialism is a new and exotic "change". Indeed it would be a change, but new? This has already been tried, not only elsewhere, but here as well. I am sure the teachers who try hard to teach the lessons that they are TOLD to teach, ie... global warming, diversity, conflict resolution etc, but have no time for history(meaningful history). Sure they learned that some were slaves here in the past. Did they learn not all were "of color" or did they learn that many of those "of color" were sold out by others "of color". This does NOT make it right for one man to own another, but if you believe the civil war was over the north's wonder love of fellow man- just read what they did to new imagrants and others. All this really means zilch. The main thread here is the 4th and our founders and they would be appauld that reguardless of what color they are the best we could give them for ALL the sacrifices they gve is a Mraxist and a socialist...truely a sad 4th for the country!

David...

The parents of todays children were taught (like me) by Liberal teachers who came before you. You probably aren't to blame, the teachers before you are.

I spent a social studies semester learning just how great communism was in 1979. Learned how Stalin gave "everyone" a job, and they all lived happily ever after.

It was sometime later that a nice Republican explained to me what happened to the millions of Russians who just happened to disappear in the middle of the night.

I have little respect for teachers who flat out lied to me, and for those who lie to my child today.

And today, my child is afraid she will die in an environmental calamity because daddy drives a 4-cylinder car to work. I consider this child-abuse.

David "Teach What"
I have put 4 children through the public education system, 2 are currently in college. I have extensive experience with the public school system. I have fought many battles at every level in public education.

The author misinterpreted, unintentionally I believe, the position of parents that are responsible for their children. Parents expect the values they teach at home to be reinforced in the schools. So it was when I grew up, cheating and misbehavior of all types were punished and parents were notified. In todays school system there is no positive reinforcement of good behavior or virtue of any kind. In fact the opposite is true, condoms and other birth control are offered in the school system. Liberal teachers reinforce only their personal values or lack thereof. Political positions and ideology often become the topic of conversation in the classroom. Homosexuality, multi-culturalism, diversity, and "green environmentalism" are more common than the subject matter you are paid to teach.

The current state of the US education system as compared to other industrialized nations shows increasing annual declines. This fact indicates to me that most teachers aren't even doing well at what you claim you are paid to do.

Take your self-righteous indignation and stuff it pal, you particular career field has much to answer for. The education establishment is a wasteland of leftist non-values and immorality. My third job in life has been to correct the garbage taught in public education and to hold my school system accountable.

I will agree with you that the blame is shared, parents and teachers share the blame for what our youth looks like and what they know.

Betty #13 & Mac #15
Hussein is a liberal traitor who is giving aid and comfort to the enemy just like all the other liberals in Congress. Put them all in prison where they deserve to spend their lives.
How about we dye their skin dark, take them to gitmo, give them military dogtags, and throw them over the fence into Cuba.

Gen. Mac
They never admit that capitalism is the ONLY system that takes into account human nature. All other systems seek to bend and contort people to fit an unnatural mold. It is NOT the role of FREE individuals to "serve the collective good". Never was and never should be.

They're insidious too. Watch Star Trek the Next Generation and all the films based directly on it. The writers are committed lefty socialists to a "man"! They created the Ferengi as house caricatures of capitalists to hold up capitalism to ridicule. The future as THEY see it has NO economy, NO money, NO incentives and yet the proles of the Federation "just try to be the best they can and serve the common good". RIGHT out of Socialism 101.

a look at coming socialized medicine
I have been putting together a blog at http://www.lsu-unofficial.com to let everyone know what the inner world of medicine is like. LSU is one of the first socialized medical programs in the country and I am telling all. So if you want arguments to fight the coming catastrophy, join me.

Another Glorious Fourth: What Would the
While I agree with some of the improvements that we have seen, like abolition of slavery, I do not thing that the author has any real idea of the government that the founders formed. The government that we have is intrusive, much too big and has taken over many of the prerogatives that the founders reserved to the states or the people.
In a nutshell, the founders would be appalled at what happened to the country. They did warn against some of what happened, like voting largess from the public treasury.

The waning days of Freedom
Our founding fathers would probably look at what is happening and say this will be our last 4th of July Independence Day celebration as a free country. They very well might be right.

David
I don't blame teachers per se, but I do blame the teachers' unions. Perhaps our children wouldn't be so ignorant of our government and our history if we had a liitle less "Homosexual Awareness" and a little more Civics 101.

Wrat Wrangler writes:

Outstanding Point!

Good and Bad
The good. They would be amazed to see vehichles that move down the road without being pulled by horses, machines that move through the sky unsupported, and little boxes used to speak to virtually anyone in the world. Also to look at the moon and hear that we've sent men there and safely returned them. They would be impressed that the Constitution is still largely intact, despite efforts to morph it into unrecognizable form.
The bad. The widespread belief that the government was created to insulate citizens from even the smallest misfortune. If they read in a modern history text a description of Colonial life and times, including the how and why of the American Revolution, they would think they were reading aboul events on another planet.

Ask Sylvia Browne
She can tell you how dead people feel.

Not all educators bad!
I am a teacher and I teach English to both the parents and their children; I also teach them work ethic, morals, citizenship, honor, and all the other tenets that make this country great. I also teach them their own language because most of my students are illiterate in their first and learning a second becomes impossible without a first. I used to teach in Liberal schools (California, Nevada) and saw many Davids who believed in "not rocking the boat" and supporting "shameless values"> I, however, continually rocked the boat and in the process became a threat to those without morals or turpitude: the sentence for making a student learn beyond the textbooks is being denied "tenure", a policy that needs to be changed. I found a conservative environment here in Kansas where my students not only become proficient in two languages but also learn how to be "true Americans" that our nation was founded upon. Norm and those of you who believe that good education is a dying memory, take heart, there are still some teachers left who work hard to make certain that our future generation has the tools and the moral base to keep America on the right track!

Rolling Over
I believe in a strong America, But I also believe that people shouldn't take advantage of us. We fought to make America Free for Freedom is far from FREE! As for Teaching children I believe teaching starts in the home. Then our children are sent to our schools. For many years our schools were the greatest until the Liberal Left took it over. When they took prayer out and punishment out they doomed the children. For at home they were taught right from wrong. Then when they entered the schools now there is no right or wrong. There's just if it feels good do it!!
Our professor are a joke in our colleges they should all go an live in Russia for they are living under that type of auspices.
Our forefathers would be hanging their heads and be very displeased with what has happened to their country that they fought so extremely hard to make free. My 5th great grandfather fought in the Revolutionary War. It is just so unfathomable what our people in Washington have done by making a mockery out of our country. I would love to see just about everyone of our Congress removed and a farmer put in their place. For a Farmer works day and night to make ends meet and he does it with honor not like these jokers in Washington. And what ever happened to showing respect for our President.

Dems as economic saviors
Has anyone wondered how much things have improved since the Dems took over Congress in Jan. 2007?

1. Price of regular gas has risen from $2.17 to $4.09, an 89% increase in 15 months, for an annual increase of 71% or 5.9% PER MONTH! During Pres. Bush's 6 years with a Repub. Congress, the 6 year rise was from $1.47 to $2.17 including the 9-11 incident--or 8% annually or 0.67% per month.

2. The homeowners have lost more than $1 Trillion in equity.

3. Unemployment has increased by more than 10%.

4. The stock market has lost some 15% of its value.

5. Major companies including GM are losing value rapidly.

6. Several airlines have gone bankrupt.

Indeed, one can hardly name ANYTHING that has improved since the Dems took over.

Sorry, Obama, I think I've absorbed just about all the Dem change I can stand for a while.

Agree with reply 19
Kravitz, You hit the nail on the head! Yes our men and women in uniform are fighting because they feel lead to. I think it would be a great idea to put the draft back in. That way we would have more people fighting for the rights that we are so lucky to have at least for the time being until the liberal left takes them all away! No one best come back at me for stating my feelings for my son is a police officer and he puts his life on the line everyday. I'm talking from my heart. People wake up before it is too late. Our America will not make it if we don't!

WHERE in Kansas is THAT!
Unless it's a "quaint rural farm setting" Kansas is shown as KC or Lawrence, two liberal cesspools. Parents send their kids to college and pray each day that they get an American back not some neo-Socialist Eurotrash wannabe.

For Jo
Respect for the president is not automatic. The president has to earn that respect.

The current village idiot from Crawford Texas has done more to disgrace the office than any president before him, and that includes Bill Clinton. Bush has utter contempt for the constitution, and has assigned to himself unlimited powers, powers that the constitution never assigned to one office alone. athe Founders would find Bush not only unsuitable for the office of president, but a threat to the Republic.

To day is Independence Day
and I just heard Obama speak at a rally and I quote him "Our military is not what makes America great".

What a narrow minded statement. If it were not for our military keeping this country safe, he (Obama) would not be speaking today; he would not have the opportunity to run for President; he would not have a mansion to live in; all the food he can eat and all the gas to fly around making such speeches. He is one narrow minded man and should not be elected to defend this nation as commander and chief.

Joy of Iowa

The "Real" Greatest Generation
Much has been spoken on the subject of our 'Greatest Generation' since Tom Brokaw coined the phrase.
In actual fact, the real 'Greatest Generation' was the Revolutionary War generation. Who else has ever had so much to overcome with so few resources. England was the superpower of the 18th century, and our folks were hardly out of the farmers & pitchforks phase.

It was the heart and courage of our founders that has shaped our lives and the modern world at large. How many other nations have patterned their own constitutions after ours?

We owe so much to George Washington and others that words can hardly contain this reality. I am certain the day will come when men and women of courage and character will once again be compelled to preserve our sacred constitution from external powers bent on destroying it.

Western-Rural Kansas
Wrat Wrangler: Away from the cities, and yes, Lawrence and the eastern side are indeed liberalized; however, the Greenburgs, and the rest of us rural cities such as Garden City and such, are still conservative in our actions and our beliefs.

Be Accountable
It was disappointing driving around today and seeing very little American flags displayed. We do have it good and Americans have taken it for granted on how we have gotten to where we are today. Today's citizens need to be more involved in their local governments and understand the issues at a federal level and hold their representative accountable to lead us forward, not into a quagmire of bickering and do-nothing politics.

AlphaOmega
I do recall that most of the Democrats in Congress approved going to war. When things weren't going so great, they regreted their votes. What a bunch of morons!!
President Bush may have a lot of faults, as no one is perfect. But, in my opinion, he genuinely cares about the people of this country. He has done an excellent job protecting us from further attack. Radical Islam is a real problem, and talking to our enemies just ain't the solution. I just wish our military didn't have to fight a PC war! I wish they could get the job done and kick butt, instead of being at the mercy of the left-wing crazies, like John Murtha, in our Congress.
I watched the John Adams series on HBO again today. Wow, what I learned!! I am buying a copy to donate to our high school for their American History classes. I think that watching that series would be more interesting than just having to memorize DATES for testing!

There is only ONE branch of government that has assigned ITSELF unlimited and unquestionable power and that's the Supreme Court. The worst decision in history (after Socrates) was Marbury v. Madison. THAT was where the Court set itself up and the final authority on what is and isn't legal. That is NOT in the CONUS.

ALSO not in the CONUS is the makeup of the court. Congress sets the number of judges and any odd number can be used. They could toss Ginsberg and Souter off the bench (I tend to drool over THAT prospect) and go with seven or add two in the Bork/Scalia mold and we'd have a string of 7-4 strict constructionist decisions for at least ten years. With the RINOs out of Foggy Bottom the nation MIGHT be saved that way.

You say Partisanship like itsa bad thing
I love partisanship. If all the crooks and vote-buyers were of one mind we'd be totally screwed. I like MY side, and as much as I'd like to see all Americans get along, you can't mix capitalism and socialism for very long. One pollutes the other...

God bless the USA. Good night.

American Secession Day - July 4th
...We all celebrate the Founders for making the first choice, but how many of us would have pledged our own “lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor,” as did the signers of the Declaration of Independence?

All of us who despise the two parties currently in power who have both wiped their hindsides with OUR CONSTITUTION would love to secede from this current tyrannnic government of the global, corporate, socialist lawyer and lobbyist cartel in DC. We will gladly throw these bums on the street when the opportunity arises, and one day that day will eventually come. We are more than ready for ANOTHER Independence(Secession) day just as our forefathers seceded from the North during the War for Southern Independence. Our forefathers knew tyrannic corruption then just as we know it now coming from DC and just as in 1776, it came from London. London taxed and taxed and taxed EVERYTHING with no representation. WHY DOES THIS SOUND SO FAMILIAR TODAY??? The DEMS are doing the same thing. The GOP is taxing us on the back side by spending OUR money beyond the budget. The stupid Presidents since George H.W. Bush in 1991 have been bringing on the wrath of God and bankrupting us by paying for horrific, unprecedented, natural disasters directly related to how they have pressured Israel often through the UN to divide her land openly defying the warnings of Almighty God.

What Would the Founding Fathers Think?
The Founding Fathers would not recognize the Socialist government that is today's United States. They would also find the term "United" States laughable. They would be horrified that both parties that represent an entire nation have even allowed such a barbaric practice as Abortion to even become legal. They would be horrified that gay marriage is passing in State legislatures and going unopposed by Congress. They would wonder in consternation why either party in Congress refuses to use its powers of impeachment to impeach judges who are willing to defy the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution, support gay marriage, and legalize infant murder. They would wonder why both legislative branches of the United States government and the President have treasonously allowed foreigners to overrun our country and jump on the welfare rolls. They would wonder why one political party is allowed to commit wanton TREASON and the other party refuses to censor or impeach these TREASONOUS members of Congress. For that matter, they would wonder why the Executive Judicial Department refuses to prosecute these members of Congress for TREASON. They eventually would figure out that DC has become a haven for Socialist, Democrat-voting lawyers out of Ivy League schools and is an overbloated bureaucratic tribute to Presidents like Carter and Bush who created Departments for no other reason than political cover all at taxpayer's expense.

What Would the Founding Fathers Think???
They would be horrified at how this government has no resemblance whatsoever to the original government they founded. The Founders are in Heaven today speaking with the Lord about what is going on down here. Jesse is having a good long talk with them now. I hope they petition the Lord to allow another Secession Day to coem about. It is LONG overdue. America must rid herself of the corrupt government in DC. DC has become an irony of sorts. There are so many monuments to the Founding Fathers and the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are immortalized, but you see so many bureaucracies that belie the fact that America is NOT a capitalist, FREE, self-reliant country anymore. America is a nation that has looked to government to be her salvation - not GOD and one's own work ethic and that TRUE SPIRIT OF INDEPENDENCE.

The American Patriot
did not continue to vote Tory and support the Crown. He was a trailblazer with the courage to follow his own convictions of what was right and honorable government even when the odds were overwhelmingly against his favor. HE DEFIED THE ODDS AND REMAINED TRUE TO HIS PRINCIPLES EVEN IN THE FACE OF DEATH AND MOCKERY FROM HIS PEERS WHO FELT HE SHOULD STILL BE VOTING TORY LIKE THE REST OF THEM. American support for The Revolutionary War was widely believed to be under 20% during the onset of the American Revolution. Most colonists were loyal to the Crown and thought the "rebels" were mad and very shortsighted to take on the most powerful navy and army in the world. The American Patriot didn't give one iota about settling for a truce with the Crown or negotiating his principles with the Crown; no, he wanted full freedom or Death. He didn't care if his neighbor thought he was crazy for voting 3rd party because he knew 3rd party was his only choice - ALL OR NOTHING. He refused to settle for Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dumb. He wanted REVOLUTION because the times called for it just as they do today. He refused to sit back and watch his country lose freedom after freedom in the name of political expediency which is exactly what the two parties have done with our government. Bit by bit, they have taken away our government from us with lawyerly manipulation of the government. King George was no different.

History lesson
ALL of the colonies had slavery in 1776. Massachusetts held their chattels longer than Georgia and the north made fortunes off the slave trade before during and after the revolution. Quit blaming the South for what was is and always be an All American problem.

Kravitz
You talk as if I was not alive in 2003. Bush and his thugs influenced the intelligence services, presenting to the nation and to Congress selective intelligence to support their already made decision to go to war. This was done in a climate of fear in the country, following 911. Many of us were against any war against Iraq, and that included members of G.h.w. Bush's cabinet, who knew very well the dangers of occupying that country. For six years Bush continued lying to the people, to sustain an illegal and unnecessary war.
You are deluded that he has kept us safe, just because there was no obvious attack. Al qaeda is alive and well and operating worldwide, because the clueless idiot in the White House has exhausted our army in the desert of Iraq, entangled in a three-way civil war. What you see now is a temporary lull; the three factions in the country are never going to work together, certainly not in a democratic setting.

Hey Jack!
These dweebs, feebs, loser, twits and twerps (liberals for short) need to read "The Politically Incorrect Guide to the South"! It's not an expensive book nor overly dense unlike most of the tripe breathlessly promoted by both Orca Winfrey and the NY Slimes.

Slave in the North (who REMAINED slaves AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation) where treated far worse than any of the southern horror stories would lead you to believe. General Grant himself owned many slaves in NY of all places. Why? He said "It's too hard finding good help these days.".

As for the overblown southern anti-semitism the south had many Jews in high places. The North - NONE! Some were in Davis' cabinet and Abraham Meyers was a colonel in the Confederate Army. Ft. Myers is named for him. Duh!!!

BTW, I am a northerner but not brainwashed into buying all the Classics Illustrated pseudo history of the War of Northern Aggression.

Take Back the Gov't
Thank you your sentiments.

Patriotism today is on display by voting 3rd party (Libertarian or Constitution). I am done with the Republican party unless they return to the Constitution and the conservative principles they used to stand for. I'm not comparing the bravery of voting for liberty to the bravery of our revolutionary forefathers. It takes no bravery to vote for liberty other than to ignore the abuse of Republicans that want the same thing, but want to go about it by preserving the abomination of gov't we already have instead of letting it further degrade in an Obama presidency.

I sympathize with that. I've done that. Now, I am done. Now I'm ready to stand up and be counted. McCain voters, I wish you would join me, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm not going to spend my Fourth of July weekend contemplating voting for a man who spits on the constitution and our liberty with his own legislation.

Our federal government has its hands in every facet of our lives. They control business. They control the stock market. They want to control international commodities (oil). They control religious expression. They control the courts. They tax every product and service that you can buy, sell, or lease. They control what we can say, what we can do. They can drag us in front of congress so they can make something up to charge us with.

more
They have no boundaries to indict, prosecute, and legislate without a thought to the constitutionality of their actions. They grant rights to foreigners and enemies that even our own citizens don't have.

They are so arrogant to believe they can control our thoughts with "hate" crime legislation.

They tell us our enemies are our friends. Our immorality is our strength.

Their votes can be bought on a regular basis. Their country is secondary to their personal quest for power.

Yes. After all that, America is a great nation. Today, if you just take a snapshot of America, it is the greatest land. However, if you know how it came to be great, you know that greatness is being intentionally sucked out of it and that p*sses me off.

Founding Fathers Meet Michelle Bernard
If it were possible for any of the Founding Fathers to meet the author of this article,(she is probably a grad of Wellesley or one of the other "All Girls", ahem, academies), they would probably say to her "Prepare me victuals and then be prepared to carry out wenchly duties!"

They would roll over in their graves.
As they gaze on the liberal cesspool, i.e. Amerika 2008, the founders and every soldier that ever died fighting for this country would say, why did I waste my time, energy, fortune and my life to get to this?

The founders would be appalled
We put up with taxes to pay for socialism, welfare extortionism and a SS system that is nothing more than a Ponzi scheme. They started a revolution over a 1 cent tax on their breakfast beverage.
The electorate back then was smart enough to read and understand the Federalist Papers and discuss those issues, today thanks to the gov't schools, we teach no civics, no American history without a liberal slant and a denigration of the framers as dead white slave owners unworthy of respect.

Instead of men like Jefferson, Madison, Washington and Franklin etal, we get the likes of Reid, pelosi, waters, schumer, clinton and of course the ultimates marxist and consumate BS artist obama.

The framers pledged their fortunes and their sacred honor to the cause of the revolution...these dem clowns and cowards in congress undercut the troops and the CinC to score points with the most ungrateful and un patriotic electorate in my lifetime. They have fortunes gained by being in congress, but they have no honor, they don't know the meaning of the word.

For a clown like obama to be even in the polls with an American hero like John Mccain makes my point and makes me sick, this is where we are after 40 years of liberal thought. If that marxist gets elected, the American experiment is over and anyone who ever fought and died in service to this land will have died in vain.

Founding Fathers, school and foundation.
After reading the previous 64+ posts for the most part I'm proud of the real Americans here on TH.I love this country and all it's history good and bad!
I homeschool and don't fall for all the rhetoric that goes along with the educational unions but, they're the reason I homeschool. I called a local HS to get a "top student" as a tutor for my 7 year old,
example of the results:
I was injured and couldn't talk for awhile, so,
I wrote out a series of questions for them to answer one being: What was the "Shot heard around the world?" One senior answered when Kennedy got shot..My daughter very quickly corrected him and then in her curiosity asked which Kennedy he said Teddy.(he had no idea what Chapaquidic [sic] was, or, that JFK was related to Bobby and Teddy)..UGH needless to say he wasn't hired.
The founding fathers were a inspired group that haven't been emulated since.
George Washington had 100 slaves but freed them in his will only after both he and Martha had died.
A lot of the principals of our constitution were formed in the Green Dragon Tavern in Philly.
So, no, Our founders weren't perfect either but they were hero's and men of great vision.
They'd be proud and disappointed in the country today. But, Bless them for the wonderful foundation they gave us and I wish more politicians would follow it to the letter.

OBAMA SAID THAT ???
Joy writes:

To day is Independence Day
and I just heard Obama speak at a rally and I quote him "Our military is not what makes America great".
________________________________________________

What did he say about our Military???

Pardon My Interruption
of your debate on America's greatness, but has anyone seen the 100 or so eastern european immigrants (h2v visas) who failed to show up for work in Huntsville, Ala last week?

I wonder if any media or columnist could follow up on this?

meg knows
You hit the proverbial nail on the head. I love it when, especially on the 4th of July, I am expected to fall on my knees and worship in front of the Amerikan Flag. As a senior citizen and ultra conservative I almost become ill at the sight of the flag. Why? It is because, as a white, Christian, of European background, it is the symbol of a government that is my sworn enemy. Why? Because this government, be it Replicommie or Democommie, represents, never my interests, but the interests of the various major minority groups, also Muslims, gays, illegal invaders, mentally ill white liberals with my background, parasite teachers, cops and all other over pampered, overpaid, over perked, over pensioned public parasites, members of private sector unions, etc. My only use to this government is to pay for all the goodies for the aforementioned groups and to allow my children and grandchildren to be assimilated into the socialist commune.
