Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Sen. Arlen Specter hasn't really switched parties; he's simply realized he cannot win the Pennsylvania Republican primary election. And he cannot win the Republican primary because he has become a tax and spender -- characteristics Republicans have tired of. He started off as a Democrat, switched to the Republican Party, and has now simply confirmed his loyalty to the Democratic Party he never really left.

Despite the hand wringing of some so-called Republican strategists, the Grand Old Party is better off without sheltering this fox in their Senate henhouse.

What the mainstream media overlooked -- they actually cheered Specter when he announced his defection -- was his naked admission that his decision to return to the Democratic Party was based not on principle, but merely because he knew his days in the Senate as a Republican were all but over.

Polls showed that he had no chance of surviving a GOP primary challenge next year. His political calculation is simple -- he figures that that a Democrat can win next year in a state that almost always votes Democratic these days.

The media also failed to recognize the demonstrable fact that Specter has certainly not been a dependable vote during his convenient stint as a Republican senator -- and could never be counted upon to stick with the GOP on issues central to its core.

His decision to support President Barack Obama's shockingly extravagant $800 billion "monstrosity package," which will be on the backs of our children far into the future, was the latest proof. It was a prime indication that his views were becoming increasingly aligned with the wild-spending left wing of the Democratic Party.

His convenient and faulty excuse that the GOP had moved so far to the right that he was no longer comfortable in the ranks of the GOP ignored the fact that the Republican Party has not moved at all from its traditional position as a conservative party dedicated to the core values of the men who founded this nation. Only timid presidents and members of Congress moved leftward. The GOP remained what it has always been -- the party of the right, literally and figuratively.

As I told Fox's Neil Cavuto Tuesday, no one in the conservative movement has supported this man for a long period of time because he hasn't really supported anyone in the conservative movement.

His defection is a self-inflicted wound arising out of the abandonment of traditional Republican anti-big government spending policies. Conservatives sat back for too long, watching George Bush and the spending that was going on in Washington. It cost them the House and the Senate in 2006. Still, they didn't learn anything -- and it cost them the White House in 2008.

If conservatives had had taken over the party as Specter asserts, we simply wouldn't be in the spending crunch we have today and we wouldn't have the deficits we have today.

We are always being asked to listen to the voice of the small contingent on the left such as Specter and his tiny band of allies. When are they going to listen to our side of the party? We're always asked to give in to the moderates and the liberals. It's about time the moderates and liberals acknowledged that it's long past time when we conservatives -- the majority in the GOP -- had a voice in this party.

A note of caution to President Obama: Don't let your happiness over picking up a vote in the Senate lull you into forgetting that having Arlen Specter in your ranks is like having Benedict Arnold in your army. He may be with you today but the chances are whenever he finds it's convenient, he'll turn on you. That's the nature of the beast.

The Senator's
ex-Spector-ation to the far left party improved both parties!

Sen. spectator has never even risen to the level of RHINO.

"...His convenient and faulty excuse that the GOP had moved so far to the right that he was no longer comfortable in the ranks of the GOP ignored the fact that the Republican Party has not moved at all from its traditional position as a conservative party dedicated to the core values of the men who founded this nation..."

LMAO come on and at least admit that your dad would have been run out along with Arlen as a RINO.

I think I'm gonna cry like Glenn Beck!
I have longed for this day for a DECADE! Thank you God!

Ignorant Hal Donahue
We conservatives all WORSHIP Reagan. He won a titanic war against your kind. It's a good thing he died so he doesn't have to see the Bolshevik revolution take place domestically.

Obama has already nationalized the financial sector and is well on the way to nationalizing the auto industry. This is a good old fashioned worker's revolution. Congratulations on electing Mugabe.

Please Senator McCain ...
Follow your heart and join Arlen ... you know that you were born 'John' to serve at Obama's
Table.

How about some consistency?
The republicans loved Lieberman but Specter sucks? They are both craven opportunists and all of us should be disgusted with both of them. A pox on both their houses. Vote them out.

Let us all be consistent about judging behavior.

Clarity
Specter's defection is a step towards clarity as to how Republicans and Democrats differ. Republican primary voters in Utah, N. Carolina, Oklahoma, Iowa, New Hampshire, Georgia, Arizona, Arkansas, and S. Dakota can offer more clarity: their sitting Senator up for reelection in 2010 voted for the bank bailout.

Silly Header on the Column
Silly headline: "Once a Democrat, Always a Democrat."

Mr. Reagan's father was once a Democrat.

Wrong headline
Once a Pinko always a Pinko

Not only Specter
and McCain, but the entire upper echelon of the Republican Party have betrayed America. Obviously Olympia Snow and Susan Collins are basically Democrats. John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Lindsay Graham and the rest of those turncoats who joined George W. Bush in trying to force amnesty on the American people are beneath contempt.

Every one of them needs to be defeated and thrown out of office. In the unlikely event that something like that would happen we would be just about where we are today. Democrats would be in total control of the presidency, the Congress and probably of the Supreme Court in the near future.

The only hope for this country is that Democrats who voted for this imposter in the White House will soon realize that his goal is to take America down. Democratic politicians will have to be placed under so much pressure to resist the insanely radical initiatives of Barack Obama that they feel their own primary goal is threatened.

That is singular. The goal of every one of these greasy politicians is to remain in office. I don't care what they said to get themselves elected. I don't care what their party affiliation is. They represent themselves and if threatened enough by constituents they may paralyze Obama's efforts to destroy this country.

Will that happen? Probably not. It just may be that it is time for America to go the way of other nations that rotted from the inside.

Gee. Corn Dog,
I was just writing on another thread about the conservative capacity for free-flowing hate, and the pleasure it seems to bring y'all. Before I go to bed I think I'll copy your post on that thread to prove my point.

Joycey and Reagan
Reagan, as far as "once a Democrat, always a Democrat" - it seems to me that your father started out in politics as a Democrat and was one for quite a long time.

So, tell, me, what is it that you're trying to say about him, and why does Joycey think you're so "deep"?

Senator Specter
Godspeed senator we now have one less dem posing as a conservative. There are many more who should join you.

Note to all:
Please don't respond to the trolls, it just encourages them. Trolls respond to articles and comments with personal attacks and Democratic lies (sometimes called talking points), usually in a juvenile, semi-literate fashion. Flag 'em and forget 'em.

Hey Fred

Like there’s no hate in your party. Your party is founded on the principle of hate.

Here’s something else to take to bed with you to further explain my feelings toward arlen “quisling” spector. It may not be very Christian of me, but I wish the early demise of all child rapists, thugs who prey on the elderly, financial scam artists, MS-13 gang bangers, terrorists, tyrannical despot world leaders, and yes our own politicians who’s stances and actions serve to weaken this nation and make us more susceptible to attack from those who seek to do us harm.

Arlen spector’s party swap is an obvious self-serving political move. His single vote will now make it nearly impossible for the conservatives to prevent obamidiot from decimating our military, weakening our world leadership responsibilities, and making us vulnerable to attack. So you’ll have to forgive me for not ‘toasting’ the man’s health. As I’m sure you raised many a glass to George Bush.

Spectercide always a lib at heart
re:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Indeed, Specter has just pretended to be a moderate RINO. There are 15 Jewish Senators and ALL are on the left. That is pretty good representation for a limited interest group-- they are less than 2% of the population, but 15% of the Senate.

Funny thing, this group pretty much always opposed (publicly) the War in Iraq, but their Zionist counterparts in the Bush Admin. (Wolfie, Abrams, Libby, Bolton, Perle, Feith, and Wurmser) crafted the Bush Doctrine and talked him into taking out Iraq per the PNAC/AIPAC agenda-- to get permanent American bases there to protect Israel. This is why the cost now approaches $1 TRILLION-- not mainly for troops, but for base construction.

Note how Dubya and Cheney are now cold toward each other over the failure to pardon Libby... Daddy Bush's guys (Baker, Scocroft) finally convinced Junior that he (and America) had been snookered into what 80% now consider was a profligate mistake-- the war of choice against the wrong bad guys for fallacious reasons.

corndog
Fred is right on both counts. Reagan is conveniently forgetting his father’s actions and you are wishing a hateful message. Both acts, when committed by liberals (and they often are), are the subject of much derision at TH.

CornDog-GunnyG-Joycey
The Democrats were once populated by decent folks ala Ronald Reagan. These days they are populated by Lying, Drunken, Addictive, Promiscuous, Cowards.

RINOS like Specter wandered off

...the reservation of reason and Rep. values.

It is simple to understand why the RINOS screwed the real Republicans-- Dubya and the neoCONS largely grew guvment and squandered $ on Iraq, which perhaps 80% now think was an arrant mistake.

I voted for Dubya 2x as the presumed lesser evil (a Hobson's Choice, really), but he sure stunk up the place.

He spent $ and grew guvment (Rx Care for Seniors) like a drunken sailor Crat.

He let the neoCONS (whose REAL motive was to take out Iraq for Israel) snooker him into a profligate war against the wrong Islamics.
Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11, and secular Saddam and zealot Osama were opponents on different pages.

Worst of all, like various other CINO/RINO's, he effectively embraced ILLEGAL aliens via neglecting to secure the border and failing to enforce EXISTING laws... now we are stuck with 20 million soon-to-be-democrat voters... the left and the Chosen One cannot wait to enfranchise them (they need not be citizens to vote either).

Talk was cheap about defending America, while the REAL threat was allowed to flood across the border and permeate social pathologies (crime, drugs, gangs, identity fraud, illegitimacies, tax and welfare fraud, barrio blight, school decimation) like the Black Death.

Finally, Dubya effectively gave us the ObaMessiah, because "change" REALLY meant a repudiation of the failed Presidente Jorge Bush. America did not REALLY intend to embrace more big guvment, but that is what is being foisted upon us.

Sir Ronald was a Dem
Maybe explains that he didn't completely screw things up. Of course Ronny had to appease the right-wing loons so many strange and irrational things were passed, but you could see that once a Democrat, always a Democrat is not too far off base.

I would have loved to have Reagan back in place of Bush. At least there was some common sense (if you can ignore his tendency to trust the cosmos and astrology to give him answers).

You TH Writers
Are on a roll today with this Specter story. I have enjoyed reading all of you today and each of you are right. It is just sad that those in the Republican Party don't start their day like I do. If they did, they could win in 2010 and most definitely in 2012. But, they will choose to be even more like President Obama and the Waxmans(Democrats), but maybe by 2012 when they see President Obama re-elected for another term, the old light bulb will finally come on. I know that I am really, really, sick, of Specter Republicans.

Bring on Tom Ridge
I am certainly a Pat Toomey supporter. I voted for him in the last primary. But I suspect that Tom Ridge will now get in the race. That would be great. Ridge beats Specter with no problems. I also suspect that any deal struck with Ed Rendell was based on Pat Tommey winning the Reb nomination without a primary.

If Tom Ridge runs I expect Specter to annouce a retirement and we then get a Ridge-Rendell race. I think Ridge wins that race easiy and finally gets the national stage he deserves.

He could be the next true conservative leader to emerge.

Corn dog
Your inability to distinguish a canny and self-serving politician from a serial murderer, rapist, or pediaphile is laughable but sad.

Am I a Specter fan? Hardly, he is partly responsible for putting Thomas on the supreme Court as we all know, because he put politics over principle then as well.

But that hardly makes him a serial murderer.

If you can't handle the misplaced emotions of politics, you should read something else and stay away from the boards and the internet.

Overreaction
The only reason that any candidate affiliates themselves with a particular party is to increase their chance of being elected and to ensure a path to preferred committee assignments with seniority. So, changing parties as an ethical issue is a non-issue no matter who or in which direction. The two major parties, as institutions, do nothing to enhance our system of government. However, party does matter because of the way Congressional leadership is selected. I'd rather do away with the party, I mean patronage, system.

Gosh, Mr. Reagan
then your father was a democrat too. Or do you forget he was a Dem once.

Reagan was originally a Democrat
From Wikipedia "A registered Democrat and admirer of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Reagan supported the New Deal."

no different, Mr. Reagan (I know you are adopted because your dad would not have made that kind of egregious error) than your comment about Specter "He started off as a Democrat, switched to the Republican Party, and has now simply confirmed his loyalty to the Democratic Party he never really left."

I think if your father were alive, he'd be a Dem now. He did not like that religious nutter stuff, and was a pragmatist. Did you know that Clinton consulted with Nixon in the early years of his presidency? I think were your father alive and capable, Obama would have consulted with him, honored him because they share a trait--pragmatism.

Was Spectre a LBJ plant in GOP?
Due to the fact that his "first switch" occured during that abomination's term.

Lonny
I read your post. You're an idiot. I think that just about sums it up.

21st Century GOPers
have no sense of history. The GOP in the mid 1960's had yet to absorb the religious right and dixiecrats. Frankly, until the Reagan years, religious people thought it was better to keep their religion close to the vest, not all the Falwell type of nonsense. The man called 'Mr. Republican', Barry Goldwater, said the following things:

"I am a conservative Republican, but I believe in democracy and the separation of church and state. The conservative movement is founded on the simple tenet that people have the right to live life as they please as long as they don't hurt anyone else in the process." (in a 1994 Washington Post essay)
"The religious factions will go on imposing their will on others,"

"I don't have any respect for the Religious Right."

"Every good Christian should line up and kick Jerry Falwell's a-s."

"A woman has a right to an abortion."

So, you see, what people see as 'conservatism' or republican now is very unlike the reality in the mid 1960's. Nixon would seem moderate to you nutters on the right. I think even President Reagan would not know his own adopted party, the GOP.

Lets see
When Repubs had exec and congress...govt expanded, welfare expanded, abortion on demand, more school lunches, etc
yup, they went way right

tedmug
do facts bother you that much? If Specter is a 'Dem' at heart, then why wasn't Reagan? Why would Barry Goldwater likely have to be a Dem were he alive today? Might it be that the GOP has gone sooo far to the right it is unrecognizable as the GOP?

Clarence Thomas
Thank goodness Justice Thomas is on the Supreme Court!

He is an honorable and courageous man who understands the Constitution.

I Wonder
how much ACORN pays the lefty trolls that pollute this site.

Sorry losers. Reagan would
be a Libertarian. He escaped the Democrats during the disastrous "Great Society;" he wouldn't have supported the abdication of conservative beliefs during George H.W. Bush's days; and he certainly wouldn't have even considered the almost total surrender of George W. Bush to the tax and spend Democrats.

I wish you people(?) would stop using the LMAO idiocy. It only points to where your brains really are!!!

Why RINO Specter Cut And Ran FromTOOMEY

Pat Toomey will kick Specter's can in 2010,if Specter even gets there.

Incumbent Senator Arlen Specter trails former Congressman Pat Toomey by 21 points in an early look at Pennsylvania’s 2010 Republican Primary. Fifty-one percent (51%) of Republican voters statewide say they’d vote for Toomey while just 30% would support Specter.

LouLouise
I doubt ACORN pays our little liberals - their impotent lack of effectiveness as advocates wouldn't be worth paying for. Whenever I see handles like those of the silly "Lonny" or "JamesB" I simply pass them by. They come here primarily to see if they can get a rise out of people, to see if someone will pay them any attention. They are no different than monkeys in the zoo throwing shït at passersby, except that monkeys are cute.

We do have a small handful of liberals worth reading and engaging in debate with, but not these vacuous schoolboys. Best to have a list of them in one's mind and simply ignore them. They'll soon get bored and go back to playing Grand Theft Auto IV ot masturbating to internet porn.

Specter has it right
I would like to thank you loyal Townhallers for making my day with your posts. I am proud to be what you would call a moderate, which means I am not welcome in your version of the Republican party. That is o.k., I agree with you that it is no longer my party either. Your posts prove it.
The Republican party has become a party of right wing extremists, who possess slogans ("socialism!") instead if ideas. You are so far out of touch with the real mainstream America that you might as well be living on another planet. Over 60% of Americans support Obama and believe he is moving the country in the right direction. They know he has no intent of turning us into a socialist country. To anyone who actually understands what socialism is, that claim is patently rediculous. When so many disagree with you, perhaps it is time to take a long look in the mirror and see what the others see.

specter called the party of reagan...
a big tent party??? talk about rewriting history. reagan is consider to be the epitome of conservatism.

now if we could only get collins and snowe to go, then after pruning, a little healing is always in order. then watch out for the growth.

we cannot be liberals because the pure definition of liberalism dictates that your convictions are as shallow as paris hilton. they float and redefine and change according to man's wisdom. and guess what man is very flawed.

conservatives, remain true to the definition.....

just words, just speeches,

wrote: "They know he has no intent of turning us into a socialist country. To anyone who actually understands what socialism is, that claim is patently rediculous"

This sentence betrays your true colors for, only someone on the far far left could not call what Obama is doing socialism. We have been a moderately socialist country since at least 1930 and probably a little earlier than that. Since that time, we have waffled back and forth a little while steadily growing the role of government in our economy which is the very definition of socialism. Obama promises to greatly increase that role. His entire upbringing, all of his mentors, and both books as well as a number of past and former advisers point to him being a hard core communist in ideology. Marxism, socialism, communism, fascism are all terms designed to obscure the same thing which is formally called socialism by economists. Be gone ye troll!

Where's a magical bullet when you need one?

shallow point at best
re:
"Over 60% of Americans support Obama and believe he is moving the country in the right direction. They know he has no intent of turning us into a socialist country."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Dubya at the same point had the SAME approval ratings, and LOWER negatives than the ObaMessiah.

As for the socialist tag, some of us get what socialism is. The guvment is about to own half of GM and might control some of the largest banks. Similar things happened in Europe, where they now DEEPLY regret it and are reversing the guvment ownership thing.

Calling the ObaMessiah a socialist can be metaphorical and/or hyperbole and dramatic license... the simple truth is that he is just OK with national health care and other concepts of guvment control... once you get to that point, distinctions about socialism become semantical.

not one of you
refuted WHAT I said because the facts are true. You do not like facts. Reagan turns in his grave when he saw a weak sister like Palin on the ticket.

Go Michael
Finally the real truth comes out about the beloved Spectrocity. Why did Republicans go to such great lengths to preserve him and his precious seat -- since neither he or the seat were worth the price the GOP was paying? He was coddled, protected and dressed up for too long, when alas he was not even a Republican.

What it did do – on those precious committees – was give Dems two chairs. Lessons learned. He prevented a real conservative from running and winning in Pa.

If Bush could justify torture,
then there is nothing the boy could not have justified. This person was the evil that occupied our White House. And if the current GOP is going to survive, it better figure out what happened and get angry about it....instead of justifying it.

Tommy asked
"Where's a magical bullet when you need one? "

Gee, I don't know, Tommy, I suppose you could twitter the NRA, that great institution of population control.

Just watching
please look up the reference so you'll understand what we're talking about. your reply is redolent of ignorance, and should have been reviewed before you hit your enter key to have saved you the embarrassment of posting thus.

Poor Michael
I guess he still doesn't know the difference between Republican and Conservative. His father was liberal union rabble rouser and then a moderate Republican. I personally liked Ronald Reagan but found him a poor spokesman for conservatives. No, he didn't win the cold war. Failed State Socialism gets the blame for that. Specter wants to stay in the DC featherbed because of all the perks. Simple, isn't it? Reagan wanted to be president, so he played the conservative role to the hilt. No substance there, however. Much like todays "popular choice". In Michael's case his continual flag waving about his father is summed up in this quote. I apologise for the length, but want the context to be clear.

"[Michael]Reagan is the adopted son of President Ronald Reagan and his first wife, the actress Jane Wyman (they were divorced in 1952). He is a politically conservative talk-show host and has also been an actor, speed-boat racer, arms dealer and game-show host.

His adoption was not a happy one and he is now estranged from his family. He tells a story from his childhood which illustrates his relationship with his parents. In 1964 Ronald Reagan was the commencement speaker at an exclusive preparatory school outside Scottsdale, Arizona. He was standing with several of the graduating seniors, who were invited to pose for pictures with him. He chatted to each of the graduates in turn, and to one of the boys said: "My name is Ronald Reagan. What's yours?" The boy said, "I'm your son, Mike." "Oh," said Reagan. "I didn't recognize you."

Anyone Surprised!
Specter I think would be left for a democrat, any way you look at it, any one on this board in their 20,s 30,s and 40,s will get to remember his vote as a republican. They will get the honor for years to come, paying off the spending when he crossed over and voted for the stimulus bill and other spending. The stimulus in large part of it just good old fashion vote buying and pay offs to various support groups. When you think about it, what else would you expect out of a career hack?
