Smart Power or Just Dumb Policy?

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton told fellow senators during her confirmation hearing that the United States needs to follow a foreign policy of what she called "Smart Power."

Sounds impressive, doesn't it? And just what does it mean? It means whatever you want to think it means. It's not a policy; it's just a slogan that sounds good. And who would want to be labeled an opponent of "smart power" even if they hadn't the vaguest idea of what it means?

What the honorable members of the Senate need to do is delve a little deeper into the kind of foreign policies Mrs. Clinton and Team Obama propose to implement or have followed. When you do that you're apt to run smack into an awful lot of stupidity.

A big part of the "smart power" she talks about is the imposition of sanctions on nations that are acting against our interests or threatening world peace or otherwise getting in our face.

Sanctions, Mrs. Clinton must realize, only work when all the other countries in the world honor them. The "oil for food" program is one good example.

We put sanctions on Saddam Hussein, but the corrupt officials of the United Nations involved in the "oil for food" program made sure that despite the sanctions Saddam got everything he needed, and they made a bundle of money in the process.

The real "smart power" would have been to trust the United Nations while also verifying that they and the Iraqis were doing what they were supposed to do. As my Dad said, "Trust but verify." The Clinton administration simply trusted, period.

Liberals like Hillary Clinton think a policy of "smart power" would have been to fail to put those Pershing missiles in Western Europe aimed at the Soviet Union during the Cold War. To their minds it would have been a dangerous provocation instead of a shield that protected Western Europe against armed Soviet aggression.

Under their definition of "smart power," calling the Soviet Union the "Evil Empire" would have been verboten because it might have offended the tender sensibilities of the murderous thugs in the Kremlin.

Under their notion of what kind of power is smart, invading Grenada to save American lives would never have been allowed. After all, Fidel Castro was well on the way to turning that island nation into a Cuban satellite and we wouldn't have wanted to stand in his way.

If the United States had followed "smart power" policies, the Berlin wall would not only be standing, but someone would probably be selling space on our side of the wall for advertising posters. If you accept the idea of the legitimacy of the wall why not take advantage of it and make a few bucks?

Americans should be very wary of slogans that sound good instead of forthright declarations concerning foreign policy. As implementer of President Obama's foreign policy, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is faced with the task of arranging for dialogues with national leaders who don't like us -- or have even stated their determination to bring us to our knees -- without making any preconditions.

For starters, under that "smart power" policy Barack Obama will sit across the negotiating table with Iran's President Ahmadinejad, who is busy making plans to rain down a nuclear holocaust on Israel.

Based on the past performance of her husband's administration, "smart power" meant allowing the terrorists to attack the U.S. destroyer Cole, kill American troops in Somalia, attack the World Trade Center, and allow Osama bin Laden to go unpunished when we had the opportunity to kill or capture him, without doing anything about those outrages.

That, Madame Secretary-designate, is not smart power. It's abysmal stupidity.

Hitlery pro UN against families #1
One of the issues American families could face this year is the ramifications from a treaty called the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

You may ask, “How could a treaty directly affect internal decision-making by American families?” We generally think of treaties as agreements affecting international relations between countries. The U.N., however, has initiated treaties that not only affect international relations, but also the domestic relations of member nations as well. These treaties, sometimes called “conventions,” require member nations that ratify the treaty to implement the requirements as binding law or rules.

On Nov. 20, 1989, the U.N. adopted the CRC and submitted it for ratification to the member nations. It has been ratified by 193 nations—the United States is one of the few countries that has not ratified it.

The ratification process requires a two-thirds vote by the U.S. Senate. On Feb. 16, 1995, Madeleine Albright, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., signed the CRC on behalf of the United States. The CRC, however, has never been sent to the Senate for ratification because there is insufficient support to pass it.

Due to the recent election, however, there are rumblings from Capitol Hill that there will be an effort to seek ratification of the CRC during the next congressional cycle. Hillary Rodham Clinton is a strong supporter of the treaty, and as secretary of state, would have direct control over the submission of treaties to the Senate.

Hitlery Pro Un and against familys #2
Why should passage of the CRC be of concern? It likely would have a negative impact on domestic law and practice in the United States. Article VI of our Constitution makes treaties—and remember, conventions are viewed as treaties—“the supreme law of the land.” The CRC would be treated as superior to laws in every state regarding the parent-child relationship. This would include issues regarding education, health care, family discipline, the child’s role in family decision-making, and a host of other subjects.

Article 43 of the CRC establishes an international committee on the rights of the child to examine compliance by member nations. This committee, which sits in Geneva, has final authority concerning interpretation of the language contained in the CRC.

Two central principles of the CRC clearly are contrary to current U.S. laws related to parent-child relationships. The CRC provides that in all matters relating to children, whether private or public, or in courts, the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration. Additionally, nations should ensure that children are capable of expressing their views freely in all matters affecting them, giving due weight to the age and maturity of the child.

This is contrary to traditional American law, which provides that absent proof of harm, courts and social workers simply do not have the authority to intervene in parent-child relationships and decision-making. The importance of this tradition and practice is that the government may not substitute its judgment for that of the parent until there is proof of harm to the child sufficient to justify governmental intervention

Hitlery Pro UN against familys #3
It is clear that in two very important areas of the parent-child relationship, religion and education, there will be potential for tremendous conflict.

The international committee in Geneva, in reviewing the laws of practice of countries that have ratified the CRC, has expressed its concern that parents could homeschool without the view of the child being considered; that parents could remove their children from sex-education classes without the view of the child being considered; that parents were legally permitted to use corporal punishment; and that children didn’t have access to reproductive health information without parental knowledge.

The bottom line is the CRC would drastically weaken the United States’ sovereignty over family life, which would have a substantial impact on every American family. For more information on the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, visit http://www.parentalrights.org/learn.

--------------------------------------------
And Bush allowed the terrorists to attack the World Trade Center (again), kill American troops in Iraq, attack London and Madrid, and allow Osama bin Laden to go unpunished. At least Clinton managed to convict Ramzi Yousef, architect of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, in a court of law, something that Bush has been unable to do with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

"Smart" as opposed to "dumb"?
Why does Hillary call herself "smart"? Doesn't she have to do something "smart" before calling herself "smart" besides posing with "smart" looks on her face?

Don't Forget
That aLL gORE invented the internet. Thats real power.

in my opinion
there are no smart people in Washington

Smart or Dumb
Man you people can’t even stay on subject, and half don’t even know the facts of what you are blabbering about. The question was smart or dumb power, and Madam Secretary Clinton is playing right into Obama’s way of ruling. As you know Michael you can’t reason with the terrorist, they have no respect of human life. The one’s in the Middle East right now all have the same agenda if truth is known, the destruction of Israel. And it being our ally they hate it more, it has to protect its self and has all the right to when it has been bombed for months even through a peace agreement when Hamas didn’t. What is bad about this is Obama’s religion, he was taught (BLT) by Rev, Wright, Jesus was of Palestinian decent not of the Jewish. Because the God of the white man could not be the same God of the African American, he would not have enslaved them. This is sad but true so what is Clinton to do next week? You see the up rising here in America against Israel, all of the Muslims who are coming out of the woodwork, you heard Osama ‘s threat today after eight months of nothing he threatens all of Israel. He also had words for Obama, which he would not have enough money to go after him, what a threat we have on our country and we picked the most liberal senator in the senate who will get us killed.

Rev
"...we picked the most liberal senator in the senate who will get us killed."

Good to see the GOP moving beyond the politics of fear.

"What is bad about this is Obama’s religion, he was taught (BLT) by Rev, Wright..."

Well, in that case, we can all thank our lucky stars we (you know, the Dems, the smart guys) don't attempt to govern by our religion.

"You see the up rising here in America against Israel, all of the Muslims who are coming out of the woodwork"

Don't look now! There's a Muslim on your back porch!

Food for thought
"Fascism will come at the hands of perfectly authentic Americans.who are convinced that the present economic system is washed up.and who wish to commit this country to the rule of the bureaucratic state; interfering in the affairs of the states and the cities; taking part in the management of industry and finance and agriculture; assuming the role of a great national banker and investor, borrowing billions every year and spending them on all sorts of projects through which a government can paralyze opposition and command public support; marshaling great armies.at crushing costs to support the industry of war..which will become our greatest industry.adding .global planning .under the authority of a centralized government in which the executive will hold.all the powers, with Congress reduced to the role of a debating society."

Fascism didn't come to America wearing jack boots and brown shirts. It came respectably-clad in suits and ties and calling itself Republicans and Democrats.

Hillary and "Smart Power/Diplomacy"
Simple isn't it? Hillary announces that she will do 'smart' things - -unlike that dumb black lady who preceded her. Racist remark? Nah - who would ever accuse Hillary of such a thing?

THE PALIS, ISRAEL AND SMART POWER
Smart power? What is smart about giving priority to reviving the Palestinian-Israeli peace process when such a thing never existed? When did Israel ever have a peace partner to have a peace process with? When did it ever have a Palestinian Anwar Sadat or a King Hussein? Where is the smarts in returning to the errors of the past and starting something that is doomed to fail? The Palestinian people are singlemindedly bent on Israel's destruction and aren't ready to make peace with her-that is true for Abbas who wants a right of return for Pali-refugees as it is for Hamas who wants to destroy Israel now. Power that is truly smart will stay away from this intractable conflict and focus on winning the war against terror and stopping Iran from getting the bomb.

The only good think about Hilary!
IS that as Secretary of State we won't have to listen to her endless babbling about health care reform. The Democrats at least got that right. Now foreign policy, God help us all. You have to give her credit though. When John Kerry pointed out that it wasn't just the Republicans that thought she and her husband should stop taking contributions from foreign governments while she was Secretary of State, Hilary told him to stuff it. The Clintons had already had the "gifts" to the Clinton Foundation vetted by the ethics commission and they saw no problem with the Clintons continueing to sell out our country. They being special and all.

Smart Policy...
under Bill Clinton was led by Madeline Notsobright who lamented how sad it was that we were the only remaining super power. With a role model and history like this, how can we escape serious damage?

"Smart"?
In almost the same breath she insulted at least half the peoples in the world by her arrogant statements regarding "America can't solve all of the world's problems (true) but then the world can't solve it's problems without America"...well, many people in the world think that their problems could be solved if only America didn't keep meddling into their internal affairs...
Our foreign policy really should consist of "Every people have the government they deserve"...including us.
For our friends: Everything - for our enemies : nothing.

The greatest danger...
to this country is the left-wing agenda, and Hillary Clinton is a prime example.
After reading the left-wing comments here and on other TH columns, I am convinced that America is well on the road to destruction, and it may be too late to repair the damage.
I know that God has a plan for America... maybe this is His punishment for the supreme stupidity and blatant disregard of Him by the majority of Americans who have invited His destruction upon this once great nation.
I mourn for my beloved country...

A Joke
Mrs. Bill Clinton was a joke as a presidential candidate and she is a joke as a Secretary of State. She became accustomed to being hailed, in her own mind at least, as the 'smartest woman in the world' and she continues to believe this. Now this ethically compromised old sow is running around discussing her use of 'smart power' which makes her sound stupid indeed. It's a bad thing to begin believing one's own propaganda.

RONALD REAGAN SAID
" Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first."

Bill and Hillary Clinton continue to prove that this statement is accurate when they rake in the millions from countries like Saudi Arabia and others.

More
More "Change" that we will get screwed by!

Ernest...
Don't mourn... FIGHT tooth and claw....

Ben Franklin said:

"Democracy is like two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch...
Liberty is a well armed lamb contesting the vote"

ARE YOU A LAMB or Lunch-meat?

Thomas Jefferson would want a fight!
"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without a rebellion. the people cannot be all and always well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of facts they misconceive, If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is a lethargy, The forerunner of death to the public's liberty...
And what country can preserve it's liberties if it's rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? ...
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It's natures manure..."

Thomas Jefferson 11/13/1787

Hal
With all due respect, do you actually believe what you posted? Bush Regime? Bush the torturer? Your former president did nothing to fight terrorism, while Sandy Burger was busy stuffing Pentagon papers down his pants in order to avoid his boss having to answer questions about his lack of concern (which might not have been likely since one of Janet Reno's lackeys was on the 9-11 commission to ensure its goal of blaming everything on the only one who attempted to solve the problem).

Of course, why should we expect any truth from your side, which prefers slogans to substance. I'm sure that we'll hear the yarn about you being a terrorism expert, a Republican and the rest of the George Soros authored script that no rational individual believes.

Armadinajad has let it be known
he will carefully look at Hillary and Obama's smart power to determine if it is the same old american policy in different wrappings. He wants America to confine its interferance to its own borders and he wants more respect for Iranian policy. So, what can we expect in regard to "change"?

senate confirmation
Did you catch the love fest called Senate Confirmation yesterday? Where are the republicans? What a corrupt bunch of phonies we have. I would give anything to see Ann Coutler questioning the smartest women in the world.

Well said!
Now there is some of Ronnie's wit!

The Govt. BOTOX revolution
The House and the Senate seem more like a closed circle that we peons are allowed to peek in on from time to time. Hillary's confirmation hearing was a joke. She just talked in circles and said the same old thing that they all say: "You're lucky that I am on the job now and not those other losers!" "Watch me turn things around!" What a joke!!

Does anyone have any principles anymore? And someone who is on Obama's team didn't pay their taxes. It was just a mistake!! This is ludicrous!! He's supposed to be a financial wizard!!!!

They will all need BOTOX to repair the wrinkles from all the puckering up to being done in Washington. What a sham!!

Invest in Botox, my fellow Americans. LOL

Camanintx
Whatever you're smoking, might want to cut it with a dose of reality.

Dumb Policy
That says it all: "That, Madame Secretary-designate, is not smart power. It's abysmal stupidity."

The new administration (if it can even be properly called that) will be the undoing of America.

SMART POWER VS BUSH'S DUMB POWER
Is this the same "smart power" that we saw in action during the 1990s when bin Ladin's contempt for America was so great that he called us a "paper tiger" and were so ungodly and morally corrupt that we could easily be defeated? Is that the "smart power" Hillary was talking about? Funny, but I don't recall bin Ladin calling America a "paper tiger" during the dumb power years of George W. Bush.

UN "Conventions" and US Sovereignty
We have a history as a nation of signing UN conventions "with reservations." This means that we applaud the ideals expressed in the documents, but we do not relinquish our sovereignty to anyone. This makes us unpopular with the one-worlders who would like nothing better than to haul some of our citizens and officials in front of a world court and lynch them "legally." Even if the CRC gets to the Senate and the starry-eyed liberals get it ratified, it will not be "self executing" so the rest of the world will have to get our permission before taking any action against us. I pray we're never stupid enough to grant that permission.

Smart????
Using the words "Hillary" and "smart" in the same sentence is an oxymoron.

One thing to keep in mind ... Hillary and Bill proved that they would do anything for money - even if it was illegal. (See Hillary's stock problem when she was "writing" the medical program and made her speech about drug company profits.) Do you REALLY want her to be the one to discuss problems with other countries with us? I can just see her discussing a new trade agreement with, say, Japan. "Madam Secretary, perhaps it would make you more willing to give us this agreement if we were to let you have ten percent of our profits ..."

William:
I never thought I'd say this, but I agree with you. We need to insure that we keep our sovereignty. Right now the only world court I know about is one set up by some elites in Spain that want to use it to justify their telling everyone else in the world what to do. The US first acknowledged their existence by passing a law that stated that any trial of any American for a violation of some of their "laws" was subject to an act of war.

You and whose army wrote:
"Good to see the GOP moving beyond the politics of fear."

I don't know about the GOP but the conservatives have moved for politics of fear to just fear.

Hillary Invents Smart Power
As I listened to Hillary talk about Smart Power I came to the conclusion she has invented the instruments of national policy in international relations near as old as recorded history. I was reminded of AlGore's claim that he invented the Internet, before he became infamous for inventing the myth of anthropogenic global warming and personally profiteering from it wildly.
Hillary can get away with this because such subjects are no longer taught effectively, if at all, in our schools. This is a result of the dumbing down in our schools by Liberal domination for 40 years - a generation.
The dumbing down is proven by the Stern, Zogby/Ziegler, Leno street interviews and scores by Liberals on the American Civics Literacy Test, as well as other credible evidence, some of it solidly scientific.

David in NY
I did not see a post here by Hal. Would that be the infamous Hal Donahue in PA? The Hal I call Cadidiot Hal due to the idiocy of his posts when they do appear here? If so is this your first encounter with him?
Since I did not see a post here from Hal perhaps Townhall has taken the appropriate step to remove such idiotic posts as those that Hal makes. It may also have been marked as offensive, since Townhall allows that marking, and removed for its offensiveness.

Is that all we are going to hear for the
next 4 years??? SLOGANS!?!?

I'd prefer a few details, thank you.

Howard - GA Indeed, Hillary doesn't
even belong in the same room as Condi Rice! The sound character and education and REPUTATION of Secretary Rice FAR surpasses that of the incoming Secretary of State!

God help our country in the years ahead!

Ernest - Reply #16
I mourn for my beloved country...

I do, too!

Oh, really?
"And Bush allowed the terrorists to attack the World Trade Center (again), kill American troops in Iraq, attack London and Madrid, and allow Osama bin Laden to go unpunished.'

How so? President Clinton refused (more than once) to do anything about OBL when he had the chance. His insistence on treating terrorists like conventional criminals made him fail, and showed weakness to Bin Laden and the rest of Al Queda, who perpetrated or at least inspired ALL of the horrible events you TRY to blame on President Bush.

As for killing American troops in Iraq, our service members don't go there to die, and they do know that their primary purpose for being in the military is to fight to defend our country if need be. And, yes, taking the fight to Al Queda (instead of letting them bring it here again) is precisely that.

If Presidents Clinton AND Carter (widely acknowledged as the father of modern jihadism) hadn't been such weak-suck Presidents, we probably wouldn't be in this mess at all. Clinton promised severe retribution after each attack (e.g. the Cole), and never actually did anything substantial. This showed Bin Laden that we weren't to be taken seriously.

smart
Did someone change the definition of smart when I wasn't looking. Oh, that's right, it's right next to the new definition of "is".

Look, what ever the Democrats are doing, is working. Fake smiles and fancy catch phrases work. Smirks, duh's, and poor english don't work. Bush stepped on the english language almost a much as rap music.

We are getting the government we asked for. We voted for liberal Republicans and we got the Liberals then selves. The real deal. Happy yet?
