Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

In any struggle between the dreamers and the realists the realists always win.

We’re seeing that played out right now as the supreme realist of our time, Vladimir Putin, not only is running circles around the dreamers of the West, but is also making them look like a bunch of incompetent ninnies.

Putin is playing the role of Vlad the Impaler, and the heads he is displaying atop Red Army bayonets as he marches through Georgia -- a la Gen. Sherman -- are those of the leaders of what used to be called the Free World.

We should have seen it coming, but we were too busy with George Bush’s dreams of a democracy-drenched world -- and Western Europe’s preoccupation with the destruction of all vestiges of its Christian past -- to notice what Vlad has been up to as he goes about creating the latest version of a czarist imperialist Russia itching to expand its borders.

As the always-perceptive Ralph Peters wrote in the New York Post, Putin’s latest venture “not only sized up President Bush humiliatingly well, but precisely anticipated Europe's nonreaction -- while taking a perfect-fit measure of Georgia's mercurial president.”

Putin, he added, “not only knew what he was doing -- he knew exactly what others would do” an example, Peters wrote, of “intelligence work at the hall-of-fame level. (For our part, we had all the intelligence pieces in our hands and failed to assemble the puzzle.)”

Peters recalled the signs that were always there for the CIA to see, had they been able to recognize what was taking place right under their noses -- “the months of meticulous planning and extensive preparations for this invasion [that] were covered by military exercises, disingenuous explanations - and maskirovka, the art of deception the Red Army had mastered.”

The result? “The Russians convinced us to see what we wanted to see.”

The reaction of all of this by the Bush administration and our Western allies has been to run around like headless chickens. We have been shown exactly how it feels to be rendered impotent in the face of a determined opponent that doesn’t care what the rest of the world thinks of him.

There are a lot of lessons to be drawn from this, but for Americans one of the most important ones concerns the current debate on energy. Nobody seems to have noticed that the crisis in Georgia points up once again just how dependent we are on getting much of our oil from areas of the world where turmoil is rampant.

A vital oil pipeline runs through Georgia, for example. One word from Putin and it shuts down.

In the face of all this, when we need desperately to take advantage of the vast stores of oil that lie beneath our feet and off our shores waiting to be exploited, we allow the Democrats to place all that petroleum off-limits as they have since the Clinton administration all but banned drilling.

They scoff at the vast majority of Americans who are demanding that we drill and drill now, using the lame excuse that it will take years before the oil here can be brought to the surface and refined and supplied to the nation’s gas pumps.

Instead they dream of presently unavailable alternative sources of energy that may never become realities, and in any case are years in the future.

Realists don’t dream. They recognize that if we start to drill now, sometime in the not too distant future -- two, three five or even ten years from now -- America will have all the oil we’ll ever need and we won’t have to worry about what Vladimir Putin or Iran’s President Ahmadinejad are doing to threaten our oil supplies.

If we listen to the dreamers ten years from now we’ll still be waiting for the promised age of alternative energy to get off the ground -- and we’ll still be dependent on foreign oil at only God knows how much per gallon.

Note: Peters’ full article can be seen here and it’s required reading for anyone who wants to understand what Putin is up to.

About The Author
Michael Reagan, the eldest son of Ronald Reagan, is heard daily by over 5 million listeners via his nationally syndicated talk radio program, “The Michael Reagan Show.”
Thank you!
Michael, I enjoyed and was proud to serve under your father while in Army Intelligence and hope that "president" McCain will be half the leader that your dad was. We cannot afford Senator Obama in the White House, recent events in the Republic of Georgia have hammered that home for anyone paying any attention. Thanks for your columns!

Too bad.
President Reagan was both a dreamer and a realist.

Too bad he didn't teach his son that.

Michael...
your father was the first Republican for whom I ever voted, having been raised in a Democrat family. My father was a Reagan Democrat. I agree with your article for the most part. We have become weakened somewhat by our failure to keep a strong military. However, I think our military is doing us proud in Iraq and Afghanistan and will continue to do so. The failure is also in our intelligence...we should have known this was coming...and we should never underestimate the Russians. I agree with Sen. McCain when he says he sees KGB when he looks at Putin. Doesn't mean you can't talk to the guy...just means you carry a big stick whenever you do, and make sure your back is covered.

It is the geopolitical

that western leaders appear clueless about.

Of course the Russian leadership wants to restore Russia's hegemony.

It's Not Too Late
For us to take steps to limit the ability of Putin to act in ways that are counter to our democratic ideals. The important thing to take away from this event is our new awarness of the reality that has been there all along.

http://blog.topicaltopics.net/2008/08/the-price-of-awarenes s/

Let the Europeans handle it
There is an opportunity here. Put the ball in the court of the EU. Tell them take the lead.

This problem impacts them far more than us -- the pipelines Putin is taking control of supply EUROPE with a very large per cent of their energy. This only indirectly impacts us -- we don't have a dog in the fight.

No, I don't think the Europeans will be effective in dealing with Putin. But, we need to stop enabling them. We need to make them very, very uncomfortable. Make them squirm. They are like the 30 year old who has a good job, but is still living at home. Angry at his parents, but unwilling to move out. Great at criticizing the US, but unable to defend themselves.

Make it clear to them that they are going to have to handle a much, much larger portion of the reponsibility for their own defense. There are 350 million of them, far richer than the 170 million Russians. Go get 'em, Euro guys and gals!

this is not working
and never will.

Ronald Reagan became a great president when he realized that the confrontation leads nowhere. Once he and Gorbi signed arms control agreements the leadership of the Soviet Union relaxed went asleep while the country fell apart. External threat only hardens the resolve.

The new pres should follow RR's example and get serious about security arrangements with Russia. Not since RR/Bush I this country achieved a compromise with Russia on a major strategic security issue.

That takes leadership and courage. It is easy to parrot each other in a beauty contest "I am the toughest in the playpen". regrettably both McCain and Obama lack vision.

if this continues we will all be learning Chinese before long. Or worse, much worse...

.........
Excellent article.

I couldn't agree more. Bush needs to humiliate the western European eunuchs in showing just how dependent those ingrates are on America.

Revisionist nonsense. Reagan crippled the Russians through an arms race.

Actually,
I think it's unbelieveable our intelligence didn't know about Russia's military buildup. I read about it in a few publications over a decade ago, not about their intentions concerning Georgia, but the fact that after the Cold war, Russia has steadily been building up and improving their military capabilities. We also should have had an idea that Russia hadn't changed, especially since they keep electing former KGB heads as their leaders.

Energy Independence
Great analysis, well written! We not only need all the oil off shore but shale oil and the oil from ANWR and the arctic. We also need nuclear plants, wind and solar power. We need to put Americans to work in the energy field. We need one massive effort to research new alternative energy exploration. I don't advocate isolationism because the world is just to small but I firmly believe that if we don't take care of ourselves first we will never be in a position to help the rest of the world. The first step is to demand the relocation of the United Nations. Let those parasites feed off Iran or Venezuela or even Russia. You'll see how long they last in those regimes.

to The Great Satan
so you are saying he was stupid? he had a courage to take a risk to ease tensions, and the risk paid off.

The Soviet Union crippled itself through mismanagement and stupidity of the leadership which believed its own propaganda. Reagan did not win the Cold war, Soviets thought it was over and went back to drinking. If the confrontation continued there would be no medium-range and start2 treaties, no Gorbi, no perestroika, no glasnost. The US would be facing a big, hostile military camp with all 15 republics and the Warsaw pact.

The US is showing the same symptoms including ideological blindness and domestic political paralysis. Both parties cannot think past next elections, and no leadership, only rehashing tried and true. It is politically safe to bash Russia; to actually accomplish anything requires courage.

Make that "unwilling" to defend themselves (#7).

They have leached of our our blood and treasure for decades, and then turn around and sandbag us
whenever they get a chance. With friends like that who needs enemies. I'm tired of being taxed out of my mind to support ungrateful
countries with our military and our money, much of it like the waste in the U.N. goes to despots and the people never see it. Europe was complicit in the Oil for Food program and
given a pass.
We need to take care of our own first, I bet of we moved our E.U. bases to the former east bloc
countries we'd hear howls from the E.U. because
the $$ follows the troops.

That’s an impressively idiotic comment; you must be a foreign policy advisor for obama.

Without the threat of military action or economic sanctions to enforce the agreements they are meaningless. Ask Neville Chamberlain. But you’re not concerned with historical accuracy, you just don’t like Reagan and refuse to acknowledge what the rest of the world accepts, including Russians.

Two Big Lies
Big lie number one: America has no moral authority to object to Putin's war after the invasion of Iraq. Saddam violated the terms of the cease-fire, UN resolutions, and we found mass-graves as evidence of the atrocities he committed against his own people. While his actual stockpile of WMDs was exaggerated, he WAS a threat to regional stability and a ticking time-bomb. Georgia is just stage one in Putin's effort to rebuild an empire.

Big Lie Number two: America would be able to respond militarily to this invasion if the troops weren't spread so thin in the Middle East. There is NO WAY ON EARTH Bush, or any other US president, would go to war with Russia over this even if the troops were bored silly and had nothing better to do.

Off Subject
But looking at the picture of Putin at the top of this column strikes me that Hollywood's central casting couldn't come up with a better face for a "KGB Agent".

The Great Satan: I've been shocked and

amazed all day, reading all the comments on the various threads just how short sighted too many of our posters are and their total lack of knowledge regarding foreign affairs.

It all sounds good... stop enabling them... make them stand on their own, etc. But, when Putin has Russia back to the "good old days" and half of Europe are at least territories of Russia, it will be too late.

You are absolutely right, "Without the threat of military action or economic sanctions to enforce the agreements they are meaningless."

We are all but back into the cold war days, and there is no question that we cannot afford a pres. whose total experience is nothing more than being a neighborhood organizer!

wannabe Satan
throwing insults is a sign of weakness, so you need to chill.

I know what I am talking about, and apparently you don't. as a matter of fact I like Reagan, he wised up and became a statesman, which was not the case with most of his successors. these days only petty politicians can be found, and that includes your beloved McCain and your less loved Obama.

with nuclear parity there were no possible econ sanctions or mil action to enforce nuclear pacts other than nuking each other, that would be obvious to an average 10th grader.

It's Obvious
Putin can see the obvious. Since Ronald Reagan we have elected one buffoon after another as president, and we will elect the biggest buffoon ever come November.
Putin, George Sorus, and even two bit tin pot dictators (I am not implying that Putin is a tin pot dictator) cannot believe their great fortune in watching the USA collapse from within.

"Robert"... Shut up!

Your freedom of speech has been cancelled on TH!

Seattle Observer: It doesn't sound as

though you know what your talking about... not even a little...

wannabe Satan, part 2
just to summarize for those who don't get it.
by alienating Russia the US is only strengthening Putin's hand domestically. The Russians are very resilient and idealistic, in the 90s they really believed in the possibility of becoming friends with America. The US chose to "contain" Russia, and today we see the results. In the name of the country the Russians will be ready to put up with almost anything Putin might want of them.

Czar Peter's Manifesto
I was never so afriad of the Soviet Union so much as I was/am of the Russian tribe, who have never once repudiated Peter the Great's manifesto that Russians will rule the world. Georgia is simply another chip in their gamble to make it true ASAP. They have simply used "relocation" of Russians to lands that were/are the traditional lands of other tribes, then take them over by whatever means are currently convenient.

This is a centuries old tactic of divide and conquer.

Unfortunately, it works. Meanwhile we sit around pontificating on what we believe to be the current case of things, thus dividing ourselves voluntarily. Folks, it's about empire and glory, not stupid politics as usual.

Scotch-Indian
"Let the Europeans Handle it"
Great comment! It's more than past due!
Europeans take our generous umbrella for granted and hate us for it too. They would respect us more and perhaps hate us less if we started delegating some of their own responsibilities in defending their interests back to them.
NATO is our "Achilles Heel" and might yet prove to be our very own undoing.

Let the Europeans Handle IT? Brilliant!

And then when Putin's army has invaded pretty much all of Europe, then what?

And what about the US interests?

Some of you people have NOT thought beyond the end of your nose... assuming of course, that you can think. Hard to tell if you're naive or stupid.

Once again
While I don't want to see one country take over by another..war is never good. I amazes me that we are living in a country in total turmoil that is rotting from the inside out and we think we have the answer's.
If we are such informed and knowledgeable citizens how did we get where we are? With all the brilliant thoughts I read on the blogs, surely we can fix this mess. I love America and want the best for our country and it's citizens.
By the way Obama is not the answer to change.

your sacrifice for liberty.
"We should have seen it coming but we were too busy with with George Bush's dreams of a democracy-drenched world...".

Ahhh.

But Michael is such a dreaded realist!

It should be an honor to shiver in winter and not illuminate our darkened homes, not drive our cars and trucks, if by doing so we send a message to the Evil Ones...to Putin, the Arabs, the Iranians, and the Venezuelans...that we have principles!

What is more noble than rallying behind our virtuous president in his quest to bring the blessings of liberty to all mankind?

Isn't that the important thing, my friends?

We need to worry more about making this world a better place, and less about our mundane and materialistic affairs.

And what better way to make the world a better place than by bringing forth the blessings of liberty to mankind.

It matters not that our actions alienate the largest producers of oil..Putin, the Arabs, the Iranians, and nor should we deal with Chavez.

In fact, we should alienate them even more..for they do not believe in the blessings of democracy, my friends.

McCain is right. "We are all Georgians now".

Why, we ought to consider it an honor to sacrifice the lives of our children, our neighbor's children, in bringing about this dream of liberty to the inhabitants of our planet.

Iraq is just the first installment.

Bush knows what is important my friends.

Do you?

Anne
If you did your own homework, meaning look beyond your own nose, you'd learn several basic facts. The first is that the Russian Army isn't remotely capable of invading or conquering anything other than small nations. You, like others, are reacting to a large nations response to a very small and militarily weak one. Russia has neither the current forces nor the economy to threaten Europe. She does, of course, have plenty of ICBM's, but those - like ours - are useful only if attacked, or as threats.

There are one million men in the Russian Army. Most are conscripts (draftees), and their equipment is outdated. Those tanks are from the 80's, and are little more than mobile coffins if confronted by our Abrahms or Artillery. It took months just to set up and prepare to invade Georgia - as intelligence is now demonstrating.

Georgia has 4 million people in a territory much smaller than most American states. To claim a threat to Eruope, or even to the Ukraine, a country that is larger than all of Germany, and has 47 million people, is simply not credible.

Bush's policy of ignoring sphere's of influence, and attempts to fast track a non-Europeon nation that has no common borders with any other member of NATO, was simply an over-reach on his part.

Reagan is right. Russia knew this, and knew they could eliminate Georgia long before anyone could react. Thus, the question becomes, what were we doing extending NATO to a country we could neither resupply nor support.

Answer, we were trying to grab that oil before Russia did, and we were bluffing. Putin called the bluff. He won this game of International Poker.

Dreamers vs. Realists
Putin took a gamble in Georgia and almost pulled it off. Had his plan worked, the russians would have consolidated their positions in Poti and Tbilisi and installed a puppet government before President Bush, NATO and the EU could have reacted. Then he would have controlled the BTC pipeline, could have prevented our military from coming in to perform our humanitarian mission and the whole thing would have been a fait accompli.
Unfortunately for him, the Russian Army isn't efficient enough to accomplish that mission and only got as far as Gori. Also, Pres. Sarkozy got to Pres. Medvedev publicly and arranged a pause that allowed us to get U. S. forces on the ground. We won't be fighting, but as long as we are there, the Russians can't take over without risking a fight with us and NATO.
Putin missed his chance here and, the way Russian politics works, he may find himself out of a job soon. It will take a while and the Georgians will likely lose South Ossetia and Abkhazia, but Putin's plan has failed and by drawing attention to the region, he has put paid to any plans he may have for Ukraine as well.
We scraped by this time.

Time to step up and bat
because the Europeans are going to continue to sit on their rear ends and do nothing. I believe that this invasion was well known by the administration but nothing could be done until Putin made his move. Now as to what America will do is probably to play it out just as this article states.

I believe that there is other information at the white house supporting the facts that there are going to be more countries on Putin's table, the Ukraine being one. I also believe that our intelligence has brought back a stack of countries that will be deliberately destroyed such as Israel and Poland.

Putin does not want any country left who will actually support a counter attack so he can spare the Europeans. They have no courage to counter what he plans to do.

As for me, I have stocked up food, water, and other supplies. we're in for it.

If we were smart
we would drill everywhere on our soil, and begin to export energy to our allies. I'd rather have our allies dependent on us rather than Iran, Russia, Venezuela, etc for their energy sources. Our allies would not be susceptible to threats against their energy supplies and forced to act against us rather than having their energy cut off.

Ignorance
The articel and the responses prove once again that the greatest enemy of the US is not Russia. Nor is it Iran. Nor is it oil dependence. The greatest enemy in the US is IGNORANCE!

How many of you folks actually knew that South Ossetia wanted to reamin with Russai when teh Soviet Union dissolved. That South Ossetians consider themselves freedom fighters trying to get away from Georgian tyranny. Did you know that Georgian army units attacked South Ossetia before the Russians became involved?

Are you aware that this is, in part a reaction to the effort to bring Georgia into NATO and the establishment of a missile defense system in Poland?

Most Americans, includign teh TH'ers here haven't got a clue as to the real situation. That ignorance is why Michael Reagan can write such idiocy as "if we start to drill now, sometime in the not too distant future -- two, three five or even ten years from now -- America will have all the oil we’ll ever need." As if the oil discovered in America will stay here instead of entering the world market. That ignorance is why a THer here can write "We have become weakened somewhat by our failure to keep a strong military" without mentioning that the US defense budget is greater than all teh defensee budgets of every other nation on earth COMBINED.

Read the Buchanan articel. He explains this much more clearly than Reagan could ever hope to.

Fred and Jack
Fred: Where the h*** did you get the idea that Anne is some kind of coward? Did you pull that out of your a**?

Jack:I can't believe that you actually BELIEVE that Russia went in to save poor little S. Ossetia from Georgian tyranny.

Talk about a couple of non-realists.

And yes, the U.S. is planning to sell weapons to Poland. If the Russians have no plans to take them out, why would they object?

And the most stupid idiotic grand slam is that some how or other Anne or anyone else is anti muslim because of her conservative stance. Let's face the truth here, the terrorists are made up of Isamic Muslims. I am NOT saying that all Muslims are terrorists. I am saying that terrorists groups are made up, for the most part, of Mulsims that hate our country.

God almighty. I have never seen so much bull c*** thrown around in two posts.

Judith
AS I have said repeatedly, the greatest threat to AMerica is the ignorance of Americans.

You write "And yes, the U.S. is planning to sell weapons to Poland. If the Russians have no plans to take them out, why would they object?" Does the Cuban missile crisis ring a bell? When faced with a similar situation, the US acted exactly as Russia did. If Russia struck a deal with Mexico and installed weapons on the Texas border, woudl you say the same thing?

Don't be daft.

And I didn't write what I thoutght was happening, I wrote what the South Ossetians are saying.

ex-Wyomingite
My basis for accusing Putin of empire-building is his own remarks about how the demise of the Soviet Union was "the greatest tragedy of the 20th Century". He clearly believes that Russia has the right to rule the entire region.

I realize that I will never convince skeptics that the US does not have imperial ambitions.

Georgia and the Balkans
The experience of countries like Georgia and the Balkans should really illustrate that America's true strength lies in its motto "e pluribus unum".

We have many peoples of many ethnic backgrounds who are willing to identify with something greater. There is no meaningful separatist movement.

Those who advocate for open borders and multiculturalism would fix the problem of illegal immigration, but it would be by weakening America, thus making it less attractive to foreigners.

hamark....
Since when did we put U.S. forces on the ground in Georgia?

Your Obedient Servant,

George Washington

Jack
I think that you're the one that's daft.
Placing a missile defense shield (on the Russian side of Poland) doesn't protect the USA from any kind of Russian ICBM attack. The Russians would project their missiles over the Atlantic. Poland is a member of NATO and NATO is,in any case, expanding its territory.

The Russians weren't selling missiles to Cuba to defend itself. Russia placed them there as Russian missiles for aggressive purposes specifically against the US.

And you are hearing what S.Ossetia is saying from what source? We are definitely reading different newspapers and watching different news coverage.

Lastly, I don't think that the problem is ignorance versus intelligence. I think that it is that liberal America wants to get that warm fuzzy feeling by being so understanding and loving even if they're involved with "Bang, Bang Maxwell Silver Hammer".

I enjoy being able to assess without feeling that I have to be liked by everyone. As an RN with a bachelor's and master's degree, I've seen the human condition from the most wonderful to the most vile. When you deal with reality and understand that it is reality, you don't have to "love" those who should be hoisted upon their own petard.

Judith
Your knowledge of Nursing might be just fine, but that doesn't translate into an awareness of political reality.

In a military environment based on deterrence, there is no difference between offensive and defensive weapons systems. A defensive system merely makes ones's offensive system more effective. While it might deter an attack, it will equally facilitate one.

The Russians absolutely claimed the weapons they intended to put into Cuba were a deterrent against American attacks. Given that the US had already attempted one invasion of Cuba, their fears were actually pretty justified.

Your talk show point about "liberals" is meaningless. That's the fantasy world so many conservatives have come to live in. As the Bush administration so aptly stated, conservatives are no longer part of the "reality based" world.

Ignorance is indeed our greatest threat. Ignorance will lead us to make bad decisions, to overestimate some dangers and underestimate others. Ignorance will lead us to ignore our mistakes and to rely on sound bites and slogans. In a worst case scenario, ignorance will trap us in in intractable positions with few or no good options.

SO I ask you the same quesiton I have asked others. If the Soviet Union put a missile system in Mexico, would you think that was just fine? No problem?

Jack
And my question back to you is, if Poland feels that it needs those defense missiles against a ruthless country like Russia, who, in the free world, is going to deny them that. If Mexico wanted a missile it would have to be that they were committing suicide. They can't survive without the U.S. so your comparison is ludicrous.

Two other points about my background beyond education and that is my family's political expertise and cultural knowledge. We have lived in Poland, Russia, Greece, and as well as in Italy. My parents political jobs took them to these places. I have been very well educated and exposed to much more than the average person.

Again, you appear to be yet another fuzzy liberal that wants to feel good because he is so understanding. I don't give a damn about making someone else like me. I just want my homeland to remain free, independent, and living by its own constitution.

Sugarlips
When you come on a post, I leave. I wouldn't explain the spelling of my name to you much less have a discussion.

Vladimir the Tough and Bush the Gentile
How is it that Russia fooled George Bush and rolled the tanks into Georgia before the rest of the world even finished breakfast? No, it was not a sneak attack.
Once again, America’s overrated CIA missed the lead-up. Perhaps analysts like Valarie Plume were busy with other things. More likely, CIA operatives deep in their cubicles in Langley, Virginia were analyzing old satellite photos from a couple years ago (budget cutbacks?). Anyway, we were taken by surprise.
Now, all we can do is give stern rhetoric and demand Russian troops withdraw. Hope Vladimir is not laughing too hard. Fact is, our lead-up for the last ten years was to frolic in our own financial and social designs. We really thought we were “cool”. We have gotten soft, like a former heavy weight boxer who gained 50 lbs. We are not in any shape for any more fights with Russia.
Heck, way too many Americans are incapable as a society and individually of removing wildlife threats from our own neighborhoods. Coyotes and Cougars are free to kill as many fidos as they can find and nobody can stop these carnivores from stealing another juicy meal. An example is the recent coyote attacks in Lake Tahoe. A woman was walking two dogs in broad daylight near Incline Village when a pack of coyotes attacked and killed her dogs right under her nose. In another instance, a cougar visited a homeowner in La Canada, Calif. (Bob Brown) and took his 45 lb. Sheppard mix right off the balcony. Not a shot was fired. He refused to buy a gun.
Let me tell you, if you are not strong at home first, forget about beating the Russian Bear. We are just not up to it, and Vladimir Putin knows it. All we can do is crow while a carnivore licks his chops.

I think many,here,…
are simply, and , once again, … underestimating President Bush! Despite his reckless spending, he has been very consistent in policy and commitment, ( Lord knows, he stuck with Rummy through thick and thin! ). Remember, also, the framework in which his presidency is cradled. He is probably the last vestige we have of the Reagan/Bush era of International development, ( that would be the one that broke up the USSR ). These guys, ( Rummy included,… he's still alive and a vital resource ), know the regions and attitudes well, as HW was CIA right before VP.

It is difficult to believe our intel was not aware. I somewhat think the plan was already in place to have Sarkosy and Condi at the ready for deployment. Truly, there was some small measure of serendipity that stretched the envelope of belief. I believe President Bush sat down in that booth at the Olympics fully aware of what was to transpire. I further believe there was probably communication between him and Putin no one will ever hear.

We are trying to assess this river of events' current, while standing mid-stream. What will resolve may well be predetermined, though by others than we might think. We are as passengers upon an airliner; the pilot is the guy who occasionally tells is where we are, and has the controls. The guy we hired is Bush. We'd best pray he and his team are one step ahead of Putin and his! I like to think they are!
