Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It was inevitable – a huge swath of Southern California was ablaze in one of the worst wildfires in the state's history, yet all that gasbag liberals could do in the face of this disaster was to go looking for someone to blame.

While hundreds of heroic firefighters risk life and limb to save as many homes as possible, and state and federal disaster officials bend every effort to put in place all the firefighting assets available to them, the likes of Harry Reid and Barbara Boxer and their allies scurry to use this immense tragedy to make political capital out of it.

Reid was bad enough, dredging up the specter of imagined global warming to explain why California was burning, but Sen. Boxer outdid him by reaching down into her bag of slime to blame the fact that the fires were beyond the control of firefighters on the war in Iraq and the fact that many California National Guardsmen were involved there on the firing line and not at home on the fire lines.

They ignore a few salient facts, such as the reality that California is a bone-dry desert filled with highly flammable undergrowth and subject to a phenomenon known as Santa Ana winds, which at this time of the year tend to come roaring down the valleys towards heavily populated areas, ready to spread the fires that inevitably erupt in the fall months.

Given those facts, it is easy to understand -- if you want to understand – why, from time to time, this tinderbox of an area is given to destructive wildfires.

But the partisan liberals who infest the political arena in California don't want to understand, and they certainly don't want you to understand these simple facts. They want to use such natural disasters to fan the flames of anger at the president and anybody else who doesn't share their ultra left-wing views and agenda.

What they want most, however, is to direct your attention away from the real culprits – their ardent supporters among the environmentalist extremists, whose agenda they fully support and sanction through laws they enact at every opportunity.

A major reason why the fires spread so quickly was the universal presence of all those dead trees, tinderbox-dry underbrush, assorted weeds and all-but-dead grass that has been allowed to exist because the preventive controlled burning of this flammable material has been stopped dead in its tracks by the tree huggers and spotted owl-lovers who routinely put critters above humans.

Without all that ready-to-ignite material, the fires would never have been able to gobble up thousands of acres and reduce thousands of homes to smoking rubble. It seems that to the wackos who dominate both the extremist environmentalist movement and the controlling left wing of the Democrat party, human habitats are less important than owl nests.

Notice that neither Mr. Gore nor his environmentalist friends who are so worried about saving the trees have arrived on the fire lines with even a thimbleful of water to douse the flames. Instead they stand far off, tut-tutting about the horror of it all, blaming global warming, President Bush and the Iraq war for a tragedy to which they so abundantly contributed.

Thanks largely to their efforts to stop fire-preventive controlled burning for the past 20 years, they may have saved a few spotted owls, but the thousands of people who lost their homes paid the price for their victory over common-sense preventive measures.

The very warmth and dry climate that all but guarantee wildfire outbreaks are the exact reasons why people live here. And recurrent wildfires that threaten their homes and their lives are the price they pay to escape the harshness of winter and the summertime humidity that plague much of the nation. All through the winter there is a huge influx of people from colder climates coming here to enjoy a warm, dry climate.

Californians understand this. They know the fires will come. It's the price nature makes them pay and when the bill arrives they shrug their shoulders and get on with their lives. Most of all, they don't scurry around looking for somebody to blame. They are adults.

The difference between GW and Arnold is that Arnold is the governor and it is his job to insert himself into the situation while GW is required by the law and the Constitution to wait until he is asked for assistance. Oh, the NG is a State agency until called up by the federal government. The governor controls them. BTW the NG can request assistance from any of the armed forces who they feel would be helpful in whatever they are handling. The governor must ask the President for any other assistance he feels he needs before it can be rendered.

is the name of the owner of the station on the comedy series "newsradio"

it was one of my favorites of all time.

environmentalists and disasters
Earth is a tough place to live, natural forces have a nasty habit of creating un-healthy situations for humans as well as plants and animals. These seem to happen at the most inopportune times, and in the most vulnerable places. The calamity of New Orleans could have been avoided or severly reduced by restoring natural surge breaks near the shore, that were compromised by short-sighted environmental practices (probably shouldn't live 20 feet below water level however). The fires in so-cal are very un-predictable as to location(malibu might be the exception), but, can be minimized by proper planning(brush clearing, fire-resistant materials). It's all just part of life, just don't point fingers at the gov't, the environmentalists, or nature, until you point one at yourself first.

hangtownhoney
well thank you

i didn't mean to overdo it but you put my credibilty at stake and i had to defend myself.

you are a person of character and intellectual honesty.

anytime a big cat is identified as establishing itself in human territory they go and try to kill it.

its like telling people not to build in wilderness because of fire and critters.

they say they understand but build or hike there anyway, and then claim they didn't know it was so serious when tragedy strikes.

religiouslib
I apologize for not knowing about Southern Califonia's problem with the big cats. However, with that large of a body count, why aren't you and your neighbors doing something?

Also, just a hint, if you are going hiking in big cat and bear country, I suggest that folks start carrying boat horns. Hurts the innocent animals ears and they tend to run.

boogeyman is here again
Does someone have an oven I can put my head in? Or as Glenn Beck puts it: I need to wrap my head in duct tape so it won't fall apart when it explodes. I can't believe Harry Reid. It seems that global warming has become the 21st century boogeyman. You can blame it for everything even wildfires. Of course the followup to that is to blame Bush since he has done nothing about it. What scares me is how many people will listen to politicos like Reid and nod their heads and say: Yeah its ole GWB's fault. Thats what they said about the Minnesota bridge collapse, Katrina, etc. The problem is you can't fight a boogeyman. What's next? I almost wish the Democrats would win the White House next year so they could get blamed for a change. But I can see the spin coming. Oh don't blame us. We're just cleaning up George W. Bush's mess which will take about oh 8 years. So nothing that happens in that time frame will be our fault. You just can't win.

The Point Is...
Dear Religiouslib:

THE POINT I was attempting to make is this: Californians didn't just lie down and whine for federal aid, but threw themselves into the breach on their own. In that, they can be justifiably proud. I am fully aware that the federal government, through FEMA and the military, provided support. The vast bulk of that effort, however, was state, local and private.

FEMA stands for Federal Emergency Management Agency. Their primary job is to coordinate agencies on all levels in a united effort during a disaster. Playing sugar daddy savior is not the idea. It's a legitimate purpose of the federal government to send help when state and locla resources arer overwhelmed. In fact, relatively little aid was requested by California in this case. It either wasn't needed or would have presented a needless duplication and/or complication of effort.

jmind
actually i agree with you,

i was not denying that SOME liberals were wrongly blaming it all on bush

but at the same time, SOME conservatives said bush had no blame

here is the difference between GW and Arnold.

GW complained he had not been asked soon enough.

Arnold inserted himself in the situation.

he was at an evacuation center and there were some sick elderly and no hospital would take them because of red tape and politics about whose district the elderly were in.

Arnold got on the phone to the hospital administrators and said " you vill take them, undt you vill take them now".

the elderly were in hospitals within 2 hours.

now i understand bush may not have been able to personally do this, but he could have sent someone strong enough and ballsy enough to do it.

just something to think about.

religiouslib
"conservatives after katrina that the federal government had no role in the debacle in NO"

That is because liberals wouldn't put any blame on the mayor/governor that should have shouldered MOST of the blame. The federal government absolutely screwed up, but the mayor/governor should be in control in those situations.

jmind and noburka
i was responding to this statement by steve:

"capable of handling a massive natural disaster with a minimum of federal aid"

i was also reacting to the idea perpetrated by some conservatives after katrina that the federal government had no role in the debacle in NO.

talisman
It is about time that conservatives started fighting back against the endless drum of blame Bush/conservatives.

religiouslib
That is a straw man argument if I ever heard one.

The fact that conservatives espouse states rights doesn't demonstrate that we are arguing that cities and states should NEVER require or be granted federal aid.

It is incombant upon the states leadership to REQUEST federal aid when necessary, which is one of the things that never gets reported about Katrina. The governor delayed the request for federal aid.

steve
with all due respect

there was not a minimum of federal aid.

the federal government saved my home with firefighting helicopters from the navy and national guard.

cities even the size of san diego cannot afford to maintain a fleet of firefighting helicopters and planes and spotter planes.

without fed aid, my entire suburb would have burned.

also without fed aid,(fema) many left homeless would not have the money to survive until the insurance companies came through with their payments.

also those who rent, and lost the house they were living in, would literally be left with nothing if not for fed aid.

i am proud to be an american and a san diegan but i know first hand that it is a conservative myth that cities and states don't need federal aid for natural disasters.

hangtownhoney
heres more just for the record. i could go on for hours.

1. Spring, 1986 - Orange County, California - Laura Small, age 5, was attacked by a mountain lion in the Ronald W. Caspars Wilderness Park. The female lion attacked her head and dragged her off. Laura suffered paralysis of her right side and was confined to a wheelchair for a period of time. She has had 11 operations. Now Laura has a steel plate in her skull. Her right leg is weak, her right arm is partially paralyzed and she is blind in her left eye.

A lawsuit of $100 million and $750,000 in personal damage was filed against Orange County. Small was awarded $2 million dollars. Orange County appealed the ruling.

2. August 1986 - Justin Mellon, age 6, was hiking in Ronald W. Caspars Wilderness Park. He was attacked and mauled by a female lion. Mellon suffered bites to the head, leg and stomach. His injuries were not as severe as that of Laura Small. Note: Due to the lawsuit over the Laura Small attack, the Board of Supervisors for Orange County decided not to allow minors into Caspars Wilderness Park at all. (Information compiled from Ronald W. Caspars Wilderness Park, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Wildlife Services, Sacramento, California and various news reports.)

i picked those at random from a long list in the last ten minutes.

cuyamaca is 30 miles from san diego.

does that establish my crediblity or do you need more.

I honestly thought....
that this column might be about the rightwing blame game that continues ad nauseum (and loudly), but no! It's about a REAGAN blaming the Dems for - well, everything!

Robert
I just listened to that report...what exactly do you find to be the problem with it?

They reported the memo because a helicopter pilot saw someone setting the fire and a memo from June (of THIS year) came out about an AQ plot involving setting wild fires. It's not like it was from 1996 or something. The also reported that the memo did NOT mention California. So they reported the news...accurately. What's the problem. The DID NOT as you assert say that these fires were started by AQ.

Blame Bush!
Folks:

This is the United States of America. Not the "Subjected Provinces". The State of California, through it's public resources and private volunteers, proved itself capable of handling a massive natural disaster with a minimum of federal aid. Unlike New Orleans, they had a plan and carried it out without inherent reliance on outside help. This is the real story.

It can be pointed out that they, as in Lousiana, contributed to the situation through neglect; the failure to clean out flammable underbrush vs. that of allowing the levees to deteriorate. In California's case, they have likely learned a lesson about the insanity of knuckling under to environmentalist dogma. Still, they met the test with courage and resolution. Except for a few politicians, mainly those who supported the insanity and are now cringing under another sort of "smoke screen", Californians are blaming no one. That's to their credit.

religiouslib-
"at least once a year some young child is snatched and killed on a hiking trail or even out of their back yard by large cats."

You will never have any credibilty again with such an asinine statement. I live in big cat and bear company. Yes, they are dangerous. Yes, they are more active after their houses burn. However, if a child a week were attacked, the frontier saying of "Shot 'em. Bury 'em. And Shut-up, would go into effect. We don't tolerate attacks on our children lightly.

For folks who don't know, California has many task forces that are regional in nature that pratice disasters. Our first responders know what to do, how to do and who is in charge. It takes money, time and coordination, but folks you have witnessed the result.

Already the debriefings on how to do the job better has started. I'm proud of my Southern California neighbors on the way they have reacted in this emergency.

i live in san diego
although i saw the best of america this past week and am proud to be a san diegan and american there needs to be a middle ground here.

yes, san diego was much better prepared but they also learned from katrina.

qualcomm stadium was turned into a street fair environment with booths and entertainment and very tight security. (you had to prove you were an evacuee to stay).

what was unique was that many of the evacuees were coming from wealthy million dollar homes while the people bringing the donations and volunteering were the cities and countries backbone, the middle and lower working class.

that is not a political statement just an interesting observation.

on the other hand, the federal government had and has an important role in helping the city fight the fire and recover from the fire.

the fire roared to within a mile of my home.
my wife and i were up all night monday packing our evacuation supplies in the car and getting ready to run.

relief came in the form of the national guard and navy when four helicopters arrived tuesday morning and put out the fire threatening my home in a matter of 2 hours.
without them i would not be in my home today.

there will also be a need for assistance from the feds to those thousands left homeless to help them pay rent and buy clothes and cars and other things for the next 3 months while the insurance companies quibble over when and how much to pay.

one other interesting note.

san diego recieved help from mexico in the form of fire engines and tying into the mexican power grid to keep power on that was threatened by the fire.

one more thing, some national guard were pulled off the border to come help in san diego

Gotta Love Harry Reid
You gotta love Harry Reid. Let's hope he's around for a long while. Aren't all of our country's problems linked to global warming?

Good Response of Firefighters in spite
of our lousy government.

I just know that Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa is beside himself, because none of these fires are within the City limits. This mean that he can't push his publicity-hungry face between the fire fighters and the cameras.

But what do the Lefties who are running this city do when the public eye is not on the firemen as heroes?

They go after them, trying to emasculate them as they are doing with the police department. The city council calls the firemen all kinds of names from racist to sexist, trying to make them cower in the same manner as the chief of police, William Bratton, who sits at their feet and plays fetch for them.

It is fortunate that most fire departments in Southern California do not have to put up with such abuse, because other wise they would not have put together such a fine coordinated response team.

I was astonished to see Governor Schwartzenegger stand up to the Leftie reporters who tried to disparage the response of our emergancy teams, because he has been acting like a serious Leftie for some time, but I think that he is trying to stay identified with these heroes, and his public image is even more important to him than his Marxist agenda.

Dredd....
Um, what?
So let me get this straight -
the hysterics from the left right now:
blaming global warming
blaming Bush
blaming lack of resources
blaming the Iraq war
are all excused, even though they are lies, because some republican somewhere said something you disagree with as well?
The fact is that it appears the fires were started by arsonists. Global warming has nothing to do with it. Resources are available. This has nothing to do with Bush, Iraq, Oil, or the theory of climate change.
Instead of applauding the fast response of the federal government, the left is trying to politicize this in their never ending quest for power through the use of empty rhetoric.
Who cares what two republicans said? Reid and Pelosi are the leaders of the left. Boxer should know better than to open her mouth in the first place, as most of what comes out is either a lie, an exaggeration, an embarrassment, or just plain incorrect.

Reagan is WRONG
Some of our own Republicans have been just as bad in the blame-game as the democrats. Look up Dana Rohrabacker and Todd Spitzer and the Santiago Fire. It is deplorable.

Jeffislouie
You're correct about the envionmentalists. they are the reason we are dependent on middle east oil. they are the reason no Nuclear power plants have been built, or refineries. No drilling. Now they are yelling about wind energy. Neuclear powere is a little over 1.00 per kilowatt hr, as oppposed to several dollars, for coal, and much more than that for solar. No drilling for oil, anywhere, when we have plenty.

They have caused many devistating fires. And as pointed out, the water being used to protect a muscle. They are reeking havoc in so many ways Such as halting the fence to stop illegals from coming into our country, because of some lizard or some such. And where are their little spotted owl now? Beetles have consumed many trees because they are protecting them, and they are multiplying.

Something even more amazing was that we did it without holding our hands out to the Federal Government. Florida takes care of its own!

Full Disclosure: I have since moved from Florida to Georgia - Wilma did me in.

Try living in Texas. We went from drought last year to floods this year. We get to live with hurricanes, tornadoes, 100+ degree heat in summer, cold and ice storms in winter, severe thunderstorms, fire ants, and wind.

People do come together
... in SOCAL. I have trouble conveying this to folks who think it must be mean-spirited and unneighborly in these parts, because of the overall state voting patterns.

One comment on the apparent difference in "victimization," civil response, and self-help between New Orleans after Katrina and SOCAL '07. I think the NEWS MEDIA's own preconceptions have a lot to do with the impressions Americans have of this.

There was a lot more courage, sturdiness, and self-help in NOLA than we knew at the time. But the media weren't showing us that. I know I had to find out about it later, through print journalism and online editorials and blogs. The media focused relentlessly on the bad news stories.

Whereas the local news coverage of the fires here, which preempted regular programming all day Monday and Tuesday, gave very little time to evacuees with negative comments. I saw the Fox station actually switch us away from one field interview, right in the middle, rather than continue to wallow in the obvious personal pain of a guy who was complaining.

It was an interesting editorial decision. And yes, the guy being interviewed was white, middle-class, and well-spoken. The reporter and the news producer no doubt felt for him, but their decision was to not continue featuring his anguish. Much more coverage was given to evacuees with positive comments, and to firefighters showing strength and determination in their exhaustion.

Such people and such strength were available to be featured in NOLA in 2005. The news media just didn't make the decision to do that. Skin color was a factor -- FOR THE NEWS MEDIA, and their editorial decision process.

Van...
Close to 19000 national guardsmen are sitting, right now, ready to be called upon.
Around 1700 have actually been requested.
The story the leftists have been telling is a complete and total lie.
They claimed that vehicles, like planes for instance, are unavailable because they are in Iraq.
This is not true.
There are more than enough planes available, right now, that the military has said could be provided within an hours notice for assistance.
Some will believe the lies and blame Bush and Iraq for the fires.
They are all, unmistakenly, stupid people.
This is the result of arson.
These fires are being put out. Guardsmen are available and in waiting. Planes, helicopters and the like are sitting at bases, ready to go.
The left continues to lie to you and you continue to believe them.
Harry Reid said that this was happening because of global warming, then when questioned about it, claimed that's not what he said....
How many lies do you need to hear before you start questioning the left?
"“One reason why we have the fires in California is global warming,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters Tuesday"
"Six questions later, a reporter followed up on Reid's amazing statement.

Question: Senator, on the California fires, you said that the reason the fires are burning in California is global warming?

Reid: No. Here's what I - I didn't say the reason the fires were burning in Southern California was global warming..."
the left is made up of liars....

The problem...
isn't George Bush. It isn't the 'global warming'. it isn't FEMA.
It's the environmentalists.
And until you stop excusing their behavior, you will always seek to blame someone else.
The problem, unfortunately misstated by some here, isn't brush clearing.
It's something called 'fire breaks'.
Boortz alluded to this in his nealz nuze on october 24th:
"I can remember many years ago there was a community outside of Los Angeles that wanted to clear the brush that abutted their homes. The environmental moonbats said no .. they went to court and managed to prevent the creation of a fire break. One homeowner told the eco-radicals to take a hike, and created his firebreak anyway. While the tree huggers were fuming, along came the fire. Can you guess which was the only home in the neighborhood that didn't burn down?"
Here's more information:
http://republican.sen.ca.gov/news/36/pressrelease3417.asp
So you may not have HEARD of this before, and you may WANT to blame this on everything BUT environmentalists, but the fact remains that the envirowhacko's have more to do with these fires being as destructive as they are then anything else.
Another prime example?
The drought in Georgia.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,302996,00.html
While Georgia suffers through one of the worst droughts in history, and reports less than a months worth of drinkable water, the environutbags funnel huge amounts of water down to florida to protect a bi-valve (the mussel). Humans may die, but hey, the mussel will live on! SAVE THE BI-VALVE....

Congress
I hope they continue to b*tch, whine, moan, complain, blame and cry. They continue to offer no solutions.
This is what the Dem's voted for. You wanted it, you've got it!
Their solution to a problem is to expree their displeasure and to say what they would have done if they were in power. We're waiting. Nice leadership.

Bah, try living in Florida!

These conserative writers are really something, but I. guess it takes all kinds.
Having to bring the National Guard from the border they are guarding to the fire.
What wrong with that picture?
If I had a home in the areas of fires, I would want to know who started it, and why it wasn't protected better. Why were the Helicopters there from the start, instead of being grounded by some stupid law? If it is proven that the N.G.
wasn't able to help to the fullest of their ability, Bush should be impeach for leaving those people unprotected becouse of his highly illegal war.
Thank God we have Senators like Boxer to bring these things to light. Calif. has a fine Senator in Boxer.

Good People are Good People
We all know good people who are wealthy and good people who are not. Good people are good people. Locally where Rich means much lower income than it does in the States, whenever some Thug, er, Victim Of Exclusion, steals kids Christmas presents or someones wheel chair or specially modified van, someone steps forward to replace it or them. When a scammer stole money raised to put an elevator in a school, a construction company steppped forward; when arsonists burned the Salvation Army kitchen right before Thanksgiving, the community -- including lots of Muslim women -- found alternate places to cook the community dinner and local carpenters and merchants rebuilt the kitchen.

Good people outnumber thugs; just like good Boomers outnumber Hippies -- you just do not hear or see them because they are not news....

Hey Van
2000 out of 19000 isn't most. But why do I bother trying to 'splain anything to you?

Hopeless.

The fact remains
that most of National Guard is in Iraq and unable to assist the rescue efforts and fighting against the fire.

Spin this anyway you want Michael Reagan but that's a fact.

Say it ain't so...
When I heard of comments such as the fires were caused by global warming and troops fighting the Iraq War instead of the fires, I thought it was a joke or I heard it wrong. How low can these Democrats sink? Everything is the Blame Game for them and, if there is none to be had, they'll make it up. I guess they have to make up for the fact there was no combat related deaths in Iraq this week; very disappointing turn of events for the Democrats. But tomorrow they'll make up for it and you'll be hearing about how (a) Bush went to Ca. too soon and interrupted firefighting efforts and (b) it was Bushes fault for the fires. In any case, my hats off to the people of SoCal for lack of rampant looting DVD palyers and TV's. They face diversity with dignity.

wannabelib
you hit the nail on the head.

it was a tremendous community effort.
some people made fun of the "opulent" evacuation center at qualcom but they had the right attitude.

instead of angry displaced evacuees with nothing to do they turned it into a street fair type atmosphere with entertainment and free stores and all the amnenities like tv and warm food.

i saw the american spirit in full bloom this week.

everyone held out a hand to each other.

the ironic part was that the majority of the evacuees came from very wealthy million dollar home neighborhoods and the people donating all the food, clothes, beds and such were from people who couldn't afford to live in those neighborhoods.

not making a political statement here-- it was just kind of an interesting development.

Natural
What people fail to understand is that the vegatation in the socal area is mostly dry Chaparral. The is one of the most flamable plants around. It is made to burn.Blame mothernature. S**t happens.I know that arsonists start some or all the fires however if they didnt something else would have its just the nature of the area.
I will say this, having been in an earthquake in socal, riots and fires, and hurricanes on the east coast. nobody pulls together like they do in socal.they do know what community means. Also they have beened warned in socal for at least 20 years about the big "QUAKE".They took this seriously and all emergency situations have been modeled so when the big one comes they will be ready. This is where local and state goverments shine. How long did NO know they could have a hurricane. My understanding is years. They also had five days to prepare. How much time do you get with an earthquake or fire, not much.Prayers to all in SoCal(SORRY IF i OFFEND SOME)

i know what you mean, i am originally from the midwest and i have become obsessed with weather because we have so little of it.

when we get real storms i sit glued to the weather channel trying to figure out how big the storm is and how much rain or snow (in the mountains) we are going to get.

this will make you laugh.

about twice a year when i can see it coming we drive to the mountains (45 minutes away) to experience the snow. we will get out, walk around, eat lunch and return to 70 degree weather all in the space of 4 hours.

My great -uncle showed me this. Every cow, horse sheep,or domestic animal will lie down and face the East for His birth. I have seen this . Makes me blubber like a baby!
I took a friend to a stable for carriage horses in NYC. He saw this and thought I was a witch!

My step mom
Lives in the hills between Camp Pendleton and Temecula. She was evacuated in the middle of the night on Tuesday, about 3 hours after I spoke with her to check on her. She lives all alone in a gated community, unable to sell since my Dad died a couple years ago. Each estate is 5 acres with mostly canyon and brush, except for the leveled area for the home.
Turns out someone had set four fires in those canyons between the time I spoke with her and the time she was evacuated.
Fortunately, the Temecula fire department was able to respond immediately and her 2.7 million estate was saved. Otherwise, she'd be on a plane to Utah moving in with me and the kids.

Need to sign off for now. WARNING...

If you know what's good for you, you'll ALL ignore roberto the Islamo-Fascist!!!!

religiouslib: BTW, my dream job is to

be the weather anchor on any of the tv channels in San Diego...

On camera:
"82 degress and sunny. Back to you, Bob!"

And then collect a very hefty paycheck. :-)

Can't go wrong with that!

anne
agreed,

at least once a year some young child is snatched and killed on a hiking trail or even out of their back yard by large cats.

anne
i saw hunter on tv a couple times today speaking extensively about the problem.

again i am not sure of all the technical aspects of it but here is hunter quoted in the newspaper.

"The lack of airpower has hurt efforts to beat back the wildfires, officials said, because both high winds and a lack of specially trained pilots kept vital air resources grounded.

U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter said he and Rep. Darrell Issa wrested the necessary waivers from the U.S. Marine Corps and Cal Fire to allow military aircraft into the fight.

Hunter, R-Alpine, credited Issa, R-Vista, along with the full county congressional delegation for taking part in the negotiations, including representatives from Democratic Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer."

religiouslib: You ARE RIGHT about

that... the large wild cats are getting used to living close to civilization and are getting bold.

I can't help but think that "we" are pretty much at fault for that. We have been encroaching on "their" space for some time... Even here on the "right coast."

anne
duncan hunter was on all day and i am echoeing his comments so this is not some liberal rant. hunter lives near me.

after cal-fire equipment, private contractors are used to bring in planes and helicopters but in this case they could not get here for 48 hours so the call was made to the military and the national guard planes were in other states.
i don't know why that is or if that is normal procedure.

hunter suggested that from now on we throw more at the fires and use the military quicker.

like i said, i had no problem with steves statement and i am agreeing with duncan hunter and neither of those two things happens very often.

just keep in mind anne, the national guard guy has to cover his rear end, so would not be critical of his own response.

What is SO VERY INTERESTING is

Reid and Boxer couldn't wait to make the CA fires into a political issue before they bothered to find any facts what so ever!

And the lib-idiots deny the libs have politicized this?

Anyone with two functioning brain cells would keep their mouths SHUT until the found out what really happened.

The problem is, like roberto, the libs can hardly wait to make fools of themselves, no matter what!

katy
thanks, tell you mother to be careful in the garden if there are coyotes there are cougars and wildcats that feed on coyotes.

she probably already knows this but critters in southern california are getting used to living close to civilization and get bold.

a huge cougar was caught and killed on a high school track field just last week here.

Katy: What do you mean to don't have

a polar bear? Geesh, I really thought you did! :-)

And, btw, the head of the CA Nat'l Guard just said that they had all the men and EQUIPMENT they needed in CA to fight the fires.

Who knows what religiouslib was talking about???

Robbie, the Islamo-Fascist!!!!

As usual, he doesn't know what he's talking about!

And, he still doesn't get it that NO BODY CARES what he has to say!

religious lib
Ane is correct,it is facetious. I don't even HAVE a polar bear!

Anyhow, feeding Harry Reid to an innocent polar bear would be considered animal cruelty.

I totally agree about the shrubbery. No one in their right mind has ANYTHING flammable near the houses there. The fires start on the hills and in the canyons.

Speaking of wild animals.... Mom's neighbor said that coyotes have been running in the neighborhoods. They've been burned out and now
have no food.

A ranch in Texas
There's a ranch not far from here where one of the Church's Fried Chicken millionaires got rid of all the cedar (Juniper), a nasty water hog that destroys topsoil and inhibits the growth of competitors.

Within a few years, topsoil quadrupled, deep grasses returned and water began to flow. Wonder how the environmentalists in California would feel about such a drastic solution? I understand they have alot of scrub that acts a lot like cedar.

The guy's name, for anyone interested, is Bamberger and the ranch is now called Saleh Ranch, I think.

anne
you would have a valid point if you were talking about the forests in california but these fires started in semi-desert brush.

because of 5 years of extreme drought the brush was a tinderbox and the winds were blowing near hurricane strength pushing embers ahead of it.

i like you anne because you will argue over anything.

but in this case, specifically, the san diego fires, the greenies had no effect or influence in what happened.

religiouslib: The environmentalists have

been in court since 2003 to halt clearing and thinning of brush and controlled burns.

You might not "see" it in San Diego, but this has been an ongoing issue for YEARS!!!!

SteveL: This column is about the

Calif. Nat'l. Guard and the CA fires... NOT Iraq!

Let's stay on topic!!!!

Don't mix apples and oranges! It accomplishes nothing!

steveL
i agree with you with the caveat that some of the military firefighting planes we needed had to come from other states and cutting through the red tape cost valuable time.

What is true
There are plenty of National Guardsmen available (17,000) to fight the fires in California.

But there were never enough troops available to conduct a proper occupation of Iraq. Because there we are talking about hundreds of thousands, not 17,000.

The U.S. Army, Marine Corps and Special Forces are simply too small to be fighting a Global War on Terror with the overwhelming force needed to win big and win quickly. Both Romney and Giuliani have now proposed expanding our ground forces by some 100,000 men. (Even JOHN KERRY, in his 2004 campaign, had proposed expanding the U.S. Army by 40,000 men.)

Our failure to dramatically scale up our armed forces after 9-11 was one of Bush's biggest mistakes.

Here are the facts
There are some 17,000 National Guardsmen available to fight the fires.

So far, only 1,500 have been called to active duty to fight the fires. Therefore, there are plenty of reserve National Guardsmen left, if more are needed.

That was reported by William Arkin. He's a liberal and often a dove. But he's an honest one, and thinks there's no political hay to be made out of this California disaster.

anne
i live in san diego.
i do know of what i speak on this issue.
your statement is simply not true.

i have never heard one person ever, say we should not remove brush away from your home.

in fact, in new subdivisions it is part of the rules for the homeowners association that you do it or you will be fined.

there has not been one lawsuit to overturn that rule.

look, besides being stupid, anyone who took that stance would be ostracized by his neighbors and maybe even sued because i am not going to allow my neighbor to endanger my home.

its just not true anne, no matter how much you want to believe it.

Actually religiouslib, it WAS the

greenies because they thought it was important that the shrubs not be cleared so "vermin" could have a place to live and breed!

anne
i repeat--- the greenies had nothing to do with keeping people from clearing brush from their homes.

you are basing an opinion on a false premise.
anyone who has a home in san diego knows to clear the brush and nobody but nobody stops them.

actually in fairbanks ranch (the wealthiest neighborhood in the world, bill gates owns two 15 million dollar homes there) they prided themselves on the beautiful landscaping and foilage around their homes.

it was ego and pride that caused their homes to burn not "greenies>"

jd's handsome son
your fellow americans are not your enemies.

we are all Americans and after experiencing the fires in san diego this week, i saw america at its greatest, and not once did anyone care or ask whether the the person they were helping was liberal or conservative.

do you have family or friends who are liberal?

do you consider them your enemies.

why don't you back up your bravado and start by murdering them.

you are the one who wants to shut people up by murdering them.
i guess you think that is a conservative family value.

The "other things" I love...

Boxer whining about the troops being in Iraq and not in Calif. and avail to fight the fires!

Right! My understanding is that there are 2000 Nat't. Guard troops from Calif. in the ME, and 17000 sitting in Calif. waiting to be called to help!

Boxer is a blithering idiot!!!!!!!!!

The other thing... maybe my favorite... is Reprobate Reid, blaming the fires on "gloBULL warming, when now we know that many of the fires were started by ARSON.

Way to go, reid!

libphobic: You are absolutely right!

If I've heard once, I've heard 1000000000 times these past few days, if the greenies had "allowed" people to keep the dead and dried shurbs CLEARED from their homes, these fires would NOT have been as damaging as they were.

These greenies are dumber than dirt! (Pun intended!)

one quick point
i live in san diego and the problem was not environmental regulations.

san diego is not heavily wooded and the fires were burning brush.

the main problem was the santa ana winds which caused embers to get out miles in front of the main fire line and the fact that some homeowners had not removed foilage away from their homes.

religiouslib: Do you not know what

"facetious" means???

... not meant to be taken seriously or literally: a facetious remark.

Chill! What you need is a sense of humor! In fact, a sense of humor is vital for good emotional health and well being!

katy and jd
talk of murdering millions of your fellow americans because their politics are different than yours is simply criminal.

what is the difference between what you suggest and genocide.

and don't tell me you are joking because i both of you say these things consistently.

JD's Handsome Son
Thanks!

comment 1:Any minute now!

comment 2a: Works for me, but the pork they consume might make the fires worse.
I'm still for feeding them to Al Gore's polar bears.

comment 2b: Drug them? They sound like they've already had enough.Crackheads don't feel pain.
I'd like mandatory p*ss tests everyday Congress is in session. 8 am sharp, no exceptions!

Unbelievably great job!
Now THAT'S the way to respond to a natural disaster!

May God bless the brave firefighters and the government in Ca.

Greenies are culprits
The greenies are indeed major culprits -- they evidently consider critters and shrubs worth more than human life. That's nothing new, it's a defining feature of liberals in general. Their bigoted disdain of humanity shows in their hate-mongering and intolerance. Le'Chaim.
