The Craig Affair: Rampant Hypocrisy

Will Sarah Palin make a run at the GOP Nomination in 2012?

Listening to Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig proclaim in near-thundering terms that he is not gay and never has been gay, I couldn't help but recall hearing Bill Clinton swear he "did not have sex with that woman."

All Craig lacked to enforce the comparison was a finger wiggling at the camera. In his case, there was also no trace of bodily fluids on anyone's dress to prove his guilt, but then there was that guilty plea admitting that he had engaged in disorderly conduct in a men's room at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, thereby avoiding admitting that he originally had been charged with soliciting a homosexual encounter with an undercover police officer.

Craig now says he pled guilty simply to get the matter out of the way, but surely as a lawmaker he had to know that he could easily have pleaded nolo contendere (no contest) without owning up to having been a bad boy and having that damning guilty plea on the record.

The media has jumped on this story as if the senator were Paris Hilton in drag. Aside from the ribald comments it has provoked, such as Jay Leno's remark to Sen. John McCain -- who had said that his colleagues don't socialize with one another -- that his lonely fellow senators could always find companionship in airport men's rooms.

When they involve politics, scandals such as this one are certain to find partisanship rearing its head, and the Craig affair is no exception. Because Larry Craig is a staunch conservative from a staunchly conservative state, Democrats and their leftist allies are dancing in the streets over his embarrassment, busily reminding every sympathetic reporter who will listen to them that the Idaho Senator not only espouses family values, but has been a staunch foe of gay marriage.

Ergo, he's not only a closet men's room lothario, but a hypocrite as well. It's a case of "don't do as I do, do as I say."

As tempting a target as Craig may be, however, it's interesting how gingerly the overwhelmingly pro-gay media have approached the subject of his alleged homosexuality. Continued...

I'll believe that people like Patrick are irrelevant when I stop seeing so many attacks on gays whever some TH columnist discusses homosexuality in any way. Your list of libertarian economists is irrelevant; strictly speaking, those guys aren't really conservatives at all. But Patrick and those like him are conservatives, and what they present is a kind of raw core of conservative hate. Drawing attention to it is much more important than arguing with libertarian economists.

As for one of your previous posts, why do you assume that I (or any other liberal) has to march lockstep with the idiocies of Woodrow Wilson's racism? He was a racist, not because he was a liberal but because he was a Southerner. As for FDR, yes, most liberals today deplore his indifference to blacks. He chose to hold his congressional supporters together, and had to ignore blacks to keep Southern Dems happy, just as present day Republicans have to ignore blacks to keep Southern white voters happy.

len, you are trying too hard

You would be suprised of how many conservatives in their hetersexual lives try anal sex and do not get aids.

OF course, no one is going to tell. After all, if Fred Astaire can dance on the ceiling, why cant conservatives experiment with new ways of doing things.

I would not be surprised in the least that heterosexuals perfrom perversions: It is called sin, and we are all weak, some in one disgusting way or another, others in other ways. As to the heterosexuals not getting AIDS, I do not know that statistic, but who can feel too sorry for the heterosexuals when they try or practice a homosexual perversion and get AIDS, however few or many get AIDS?

Now, how do you know that heterosexuals practice anal intercourse and don't get AIDS? I certainly don't have time to read NAMBLA's polls or stats or whatever on the subject. If I want to know about heterosexuals practicing anal intercourse and not getting AIDS, which is doubtful, I'll go to a respectable source, if there are any, since the CDC, for example, skews everything it does so that the homosexuals and homosexualists don't get their feelings hurt.

As to your reference to Fred Astaire, dancing on the ceiling, how would a conservative take that as inspiration for experimenting "with new ways of doing things"? Whether or not Fred Astaire danced on the ceiling, your suggestion that conservatives should experiment with new ways of doing things is silly: We KNOW how to do things right, right now, why experiment and catch AIDS, we don't need to experiment, we know what the marriage relationship means and involves.

As I said somewhere else, keep straining like this and you will need a hernia repair operation.
