Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

I got thinking about something my dad Ronald Reagan wrote about in his book “An American Life” about the importance of sometimes keeping secrets from Congress.

He recalled certain things he refused to reveal to members of Congress and explained why he would not take them into his confidence.

For example, he recalled that he would not share with Congress the fact that he was about to go into Grenada to prevent a Communist takeover of that island and to rescue endangered American students there.

He would not share with Congress the fact that he was about to order a fly-by over Khadafy’s Libya, and take out one or two of his homes in the process.

He wouldn’t share with Congress that he was ordering Ed Meese to shoot down Libyan planes if they locked on to our fighter planes with their missiles. He said if our pilots believed they were locked-on they should not hesitate to shoot them down. And they did.

In his book he explained that he didn’t reveal these things because he feared that members of Congress would leak information to the media to try to stop him from carrying out those plans to protect our national security which they opposed.

He knew that such leaks could cause people to lose their lives and be very detrimental to the United States. So he kept his mouth shut.

What got me thinking about this was an article in The Washington Times last week that revealed that the Bush administration was devising a plan to stave off the very serious possibility of a Turkish invasion and military action in northern Iraq.

The story claimed that U.S. Special Forces would work with the Turkish military to locate and capture leaders of a Kurdish rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Covert action, classified planning, and the utmost secrecy were required if the plan was to succeed in preventing an explosive situation to develop in northern Iraq, which up to now has been the most peaceful area of that troubled country. An invasion by Turkey would upset that apple cart.

It was vital that the plan be kept confidential, and members of Congress were told that fact during Congressional briefings, but unconcerned Capitol Hill blabbermouths chucked security into the trash can when one or more members of Congress present at briefings -- conducted in secrecy by Undersecretary of Defense Eric Edelman -- leaked the information to columnist Robert Novak, who published it in his column.

The result: the interests of the United State were undermined and the chance of success of a program vital to the United States was scuttled.

Here we go again with members of Congress. They leaked information either because they disagree with a policy or are just excited over being able to show how important they are in having access to classified information they can leak to the media.

It doesn’t bother them that the leaks prevented something vital to our national security from happening. In this case, the plan no longer has any chance of success because, thanks to the leakers, everyone knows about it.

These members of Congress who can’t or won’t keep a secret need to be held accountable, but they won’t because the one piece of information they won’t leak is who they are.

These leakers could kill us all someday.

It’s a good thing there were no politicians or reporters around when George Washington crossed the Delaware. If they had been the Hessians would have been waiting for them on the other side.

My dad had the right idea: Don’t ask, don’t tell. Just go ahead and do the right thing and keep quiet about it until it’s done.

Pres. Reagan: "...didn’t reveal these

A few comments about Pres. R. Reagan....

Brilliant! Insightful! Extraordinary wisdom!

Unfortunately, since 9-11 we've watched Congress and the Pentagon prove Pres. Reagan RIGHT!

Thank you, Michael Reagan. Excellent column. Much to think about.

This has to be…
One of my favorite Mike Reagan articles! It is informative and supported with historical facts; and I definitely want to read President Ronald Reagan's book "An American Life."

Why can't our leaders in elective office learn from the past and President Reagan?

the White House does nothing....
I find it distressing that the White House does nothing about these leaks even when we KNOW the culprit, as in the case involving the New York Times revealing an ongoing and effective surveillance program. A president who is willing to send men and women overseas to give their lives shouldn't hesitate to put the NYT on trial for sedition. "Either you're for us or against us" should also apply to these pantywaist journalists. Even if you're personally against the war, it's unconsionable to sabotage your own country.

The reason the left has been so effective with it's anti-war propaganda is that the administration has flinched so many times. Not to mention the tepid resonses of the Congressional Republicans.

Cheney's well aware of that
"The story claimed that U.S. Special Forces would work with the Turkish military to locate and capture leaders of a Kurdish rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK)."

The Bushies are well aware of the need to keep secrets from a hostile Congress. It's obvious that they told this particular story to Congress with the EXPECTATION that it would be leaked to the media. Then it gets picked up by the Turks (who say "Great, now we don't have to invade Iraq ourselves") and the Kurds (who say "Damn, we had better stop provoking the Turks because we're even upsetting our allies, the Americans").

The purpose of this American strategy was to try to deter a Turkish invasion. But any deterrent is useless if you keep it a secret!

MikraT
A MEN!!

What gets me is how our hypocritical Congress had no problem with ruining the life of Scooter Libby because he supposedly "leaked" information about a covert operative for the CIA, who turned out not to be covert and not operative. This piece of information did no damage to anyone when it hit the media, and yet when REAL damage is done to our entire nation's security, there are never any consequences for the perpetrators.

Typical politicians. It's no wonder everyone despises them.

Mike has it right, but...
Lets not forget the breakdown of the system is allowed by the fact that THIS president has created the problem for himself by losing the trust of the people.

Good Job Michel
The congress Stinks and should be ashamed of being Americans. They are seeking self gratifications over natinal security. God Help us if the democrats win the 2008 election.

who says
that some of these congress critters are American?

What a shame!
And that is why this congress gets the lowest points ever. The American people know what a bunch of low lifes they are, and the media also. I am so disappointed in my fellow baby boomers. Compared to our parents and grand parents, we really suck.

Congress
Is there a question about why the reputation of Congress is in the pits?
And do they care? The arrogance of most of the people in Congress is unbelievable. Too many of them act and seem like little tin gods.
If the Republicans do what they did in the last election and sit back and let the Democrats win again, they will deserve the same disgust that Congress is getting and deserving at the moment.

The left
(products of the 60's)have no respect for authorty or opinion except for their own!!! Remember that was supposed to be one of the liberating outcomes of the 60's rebellion. Are you surprised they are "leakers"?

just more
Just more treason from the "most ethical congress, of all times". BAH!

Ronald Reagan
was the man. Clearly the greatest president of the 20th century, and one of the best three of all time. To anyone who disagrees with that - I'm right, you're wrong, case closed!! Future presidents need to look at The Great One as a role model.

Atta boy Novak
Atta Boy Novak, publish the leak. You really think your a great journalist. Your becoming a bigger scum bag every day.

To SteveL, right it was leaked on purpose, just where did you get your info?? Was everything else leaked on purpose also, or just the cr*p that Novak gets??

R.R. - Our Last Great President!
Ronald Reagan made some mistakes, but his insight into Government and the Traitorous Demonrats were correct. The last of the True Americans. It is Time to Take Back America. I do not want the U.S.A. to become the U.S.S.N.A. (United Socialist States of North America), which is what these Demonrats are taking this Country. However, this will continue to happen as long as the GOP and the MSM continue on their Present Course. The GOP is a bunch of Pansie's who don't have the strength to stand up and go after the MSM or the Traitorous Demonrats in Office, who would violate our Country by Leaking information, and/or go after the MSM for printing these leaks in the first place. And our Courts is as much of a Joke as Both the Demonrats and the MSM. It is time to Take Back America, or the end result will not be what true Americans want, but will it be too late? Why do you think the Demonrats are attacking our 2nd Admendment rights? Because if no one is allowed guns, then how will the true Americans take back control after they have enslaved America and stole all the Freedoms that our Forefathers died to protect. There must be a line drawn, and when will the pitiful excuse for the Silent Majority - WAKE UP!

Bytheocean
Now, now, don't be including my lowlifes in there with those other rascals.

Ronald Reagan
was not the only one who knew the importance of keeping congress out of the loop at times. Franklin, Jefferson, Hamilton, Monroe, Washington, and Adams knew as well.

It seems RR learned his lessons well from the Founding Fathers. Congress has big mouths and will politicize any and everything for personal gain.

Pres. Reagan was A Great Friend
I met with Gov. Ronald W. Reagan several times while he was Governor. Between Governor and President, his office was on the 7th floor, mine on the 4th, in the same building in Los Angeles. He remembered me, so we talked a few minutes, several times. Sure impressed my coworkers.

As we were ready to leave Los Angeles, on our way to Frankfurt, Germany, we had to wait a few minutes for President Reagan and Air Force One to take off. I figured he was at the Los Angeles airport today on purpose, to make sure all was safe for the start of our journey.

We met a lady who had recently visited a college in New York City, and said everyone there hated President Reagan, and he was going to be impeached. I told her, “Going to a college in New York City to learn about the political health of the US, is like going to a Doctor for a physical exam, and he only looks at your armpits.” And I was being polite when I said “armpits.”

While we were eating lunch in the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden, a well dressed gentleman told us a joke — “In America you have Johnny Cash, Bob Hope, and President Reagan. In Sweden we have no cash, no hope, and Parliament.”

Treason?
IF...

...the purpose of the leak was to stir up the Kurds becuase they are a bright spot in Iraq, (i.e. so Iraq is "more" of a failure "for Bush") then the leaker committed treason. They deliberately increased the danger to our troops and moreso they did it purely for some tangential political gain.

THEN...
...they should face 7 guns with 6 blanks and 1 live round.

That is a great joke! Thanks for posting it!
----------

Please let me know just what you are thanking me for. It depends on how far left or right you are, and if you are laughing at me or at the joke!!

If you mean the one about Stockholm, I agree, and thanks. That actually happened.
--------

And so did this, the day before the joke. I can't resist posting it!!

On our second visit to Stockholm I spent part of one day trying to find where to take Emmy for lunch the next day. (Emmy was resting in the RV.) Yes, I really did conduct a sidewalk survey, and it boiled down to either the buffet at the restaurant in the Stockholm Opera Building, or the menu restaurant at the Grand Hotel. I asked several people, some ladies I stopped on the street, lady clerks in a couple of stores, and including the ladies at Stockholm’s Post Office, and asked where they would go for lunch if they did not have to pay the bill. A couple of the ladies thought maybe I was going to ask them to lunch. I should have thought of that. The more than a dozen votes were almost tied between the Opera, and the Grand Hotel. The next day Emmy selected the Grand Hotel, and it was fine. Stockholm is a lovely city, rather majestic. (1985)

I am not laughing at you I am laughing at the well dressed man joke that is very true in the proverbial sense.

Drive-by Arrogance
The Drive-by Media act like elected officials, forever trying to actively affect policy instead of reporting on it. To hell with them. The Reagan Way is the better way.

Reagan should be on Mt. Rushmore
I have long believed that Ronald Reagan was the best president of the 20th century, and belongs alongside the Greats (and not so greats) on Mt. Rushmore.

Our current "leaders" could do worse than spend some time studying his legacy.

Although novak is a good journalist, I think he's let his own ego surpass his common sense.
Just because he had the information, didn't mean he had to make it public. Real journalists have a conscience along with an ego.
Publishing the info on this mission is just as bad as the NYT publishing the leaks and half truths about NSA wiretaps.

Before you publish a story like that your first thought should be, "How many people will be killed after this goes out?"

The idiot who leaked this info should be hauled from the capitol building in chains.

Thanks Lolo

Thank you Lolo, I don't read enough of these posts to know very many names, and you know a lot of times people post snide remarks. And from what I have seen, posters are worse here, there and elsewhere on the net, so I just wanted to be sure.

And of course it gave me an excuse to post the note about finding the restaurant for my Sweetie. And as you can imagine, I love bragging about doing things for my Sweetie, just as long as I could.

I hoped your comment was as written, and it was.

Thanks a lot.

jim
your welcome! Please feel free to post more anecdotes and stories! I love them! glad to hear your sweetie is well taken care of as it should be!

Avenge USA
there is a reason the media likes to call themselves the fourth branch of govt. What is sad they actually believe that and the way people gobble up their bs it is no wonder that they are drunk with power.
