Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Anybody who watched presidential spokesman Tony Snow face a pack of snarling White House press corps correspondents following President Bush’s commutation of Scooter Libby’s prison sentence will understand the meaning of the word hypocrisy.

These are the very same media hacks who turned a blind eye to Clintonista Sandy Berger stuffing national security documents in his socks, stealing them from the National Archives and destroying them and then getting nothing more in the way of punishment than a mere slap on the wrist.

Then there was Mrs. Hillary Clinton, who had the gall to issue a statement saying, "Today's decision is yet another example that this Administration simply considers itself above the law. This case arose from the Administration's politicization of national security intelligence and its efforts to punish those who spoke out against its policies. Four years into the Iraq war, Americans are still living with the consequences of this White House's efforts to quell dissent. This commutation sends the clear signal that in this Administration, cronyism and ideology trump competence and justice."

Said Tony Snow: "I don't know what Arkansan is for chutzpah, but this is a gigantic case of it."

Here, after all, is the wife of a president who all but peddled pardons to an assortment of felons and miscreants including one malodorous fugitive from justice who had renounced his American citizenship.

Doesn’t this woman recall that on her husband’s last day in the White House he signed 140 pardons and several commutations?

Among the beneficiaries of Clinton’s compassion, according to Wikipedia :

•Melvin J. Reynolds, a Democratic Congressman from Illinois, who was convicted of bank fraud, 12 counts of sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography. Clinton commuted the sentence on the bank fraud and Reynolds was allowed to serve the final months under the auspices of a halfway house.

•His half-brother Roger Clinton on drug charges after having served the entire sentence more than a decade earlier.

•Marc Rich, a fugitive who had renounced his U.S. citizenship, was pardoned for tax evasion charges. Denise Rich, Marc's former wife, was a close friend of the Clintons and had made substantial donations to both Clinton's library and Hillary's Senate campaign. Clinton agreed to a pardon that required Marc Rich to pay a $100,000,000 fine before he could return to the United States. According to Paul Volker’s independent investigation of the U.N. Oil-for-Food kickback schemes, Rich was a middleman for several suspect Iraqi oil deals involving more than 4 million barrels of oil.

•Carlos A. Vignali, who had his sentence for cocaine trafficking commuted after serving 6 of 15 years in federal prison.

•Almon Gledd Braswell was pardoned for his convictions for perjury and mail fraud, even while a federal investigation was underway regarding additional money laundering and tax evasion charges.

Braswell and Vignali each paid approximately $200,000 to Hillary Clinton's brother, Hugh Rodham, to represent their respective cases for clemency. Hugh Rodham returned the payments after they were disclosed to the public. Braswell would later invoke the Fifth Amendment at a Senate Committee hearing in 2001, when questioned about allegations of his having systematically defrauded senior citizens of millions of dollars.

•In March 2000, Bill Clinton pardoned Edgar and Vonna Jo Gregory, owners of United Shows International, for bank fraud charges from a 1982 conviction. (They were already out of jail, but the prior conviction prevented them from doing business in certain states.) Hillary Clinton’s youngest brother, Tony, was an acquaintance of the Gregorys, and had lobbied Clinton on their behalf.

In the wake of the pardons the Federal prosecutor in New York, Mary Jo White, was appointed to investigate what the media was calling “Pardongate.” She was replaced by James Comey, who obligingly cleared Clinton of any wrongdoing.

This same James Comey was later responsible for the appointment of Patrick Fitzgerald as the special prosecutor who indicted Libby.

Smoke screen of all smoke screens
There's a comment above that Libby was the smoke screen for Armitage. But in fact, the whole debacle was a smoke screen for the yellow cake memo and the fact that the administration knowingly used fake evidence to go to war. What's the good news? Harken de Colombia's oil profits are up. No bid contractors are doing well (especially at Dubai tax rates).

Michael, thank you for keeping us safely in the right/left paradigm. We'll continue to argue amongst ourselves while the beltway wallows in its sense of royalty. Or...we'll wake up and vote quite differently than ever before. Pelosi, Reid, Bush, Cheney, Clinton...Do any Americans believe these people represent us?

Clinton lied under oath!
I haven't read every post, but the salient aspect in regards to how Clinton relates to this case is the fact that Clinton HIMSELF lied under oath ("I did not have sexual relations with that woman") and tried to obfuscate the situation by debating the meaning of the word "is". AND the media turned a deaf ear to all of that. Did Clinton even get a slap on the wrist for his perjury?

eastlake joe
Agreed. Unfortunately, treason is rewarded by the left in our Country.

About this thread....
(sigh...)

Annthem
I still say Bill the liar hasn't been brought up on charges for the worst crime he commited in my opinion. The crime of treason. When he publically protested against this nation on foriegn soil I.E. England during Viet Nam. In my opinion this is treason pure and simple. He was, at the time, an American Citizen>

George W Bush writes:
"Libby was convicted of perjury, why are you guys making excuses for a felon?"

Well, because I'm still trying to figure out what his "lie" was. As near as I can figure, he is guilty of not remembering when he DIDN'T out plame.

He didn't break any law, but he didn't remember when he broke a law that he didn't break.

It's ridiculous. What did he do? Not "out" an agent that wasn't "outable"? This is crazy. It's nifong crap, and you know it.

Doesn't matter...just keep shrieking about a phantom crime...that's all the masses will remember. Daddy goebbles is proud of you.

Mel Reynolds' situation was even worse
than stated, because the girl he was having sex with was a 16-year-old campaign volunteer. He was also charged at the time with solicitation of child pornorgraphy. I guess Mr. & Mrs. Clinton are especially proud of that one.

Nanna
I really feel sorry for you and others who live in Arkansas. You not only had to be represented by Bill the traitor as pres. you had to be represented by him as gov. That must hurt something feirce.

Wow pt2
Iwonder where bull spewer came in at?

Wow!
Robert-o has led such an exciting life!!! A federal peace officer, Commercial pilot, and a test pilot!!! Wow!!!

YouRepugsMakeMeLaugh Prefers Meds
YouRepugsMakeMeLaugh asks Mac Moore regarding his Conservative, or Constitutional, logic, "Skipped your meds today did you?"

So, for one to understand Liberal logic, one needs to be on medication? I will pass, thank you.

Lets try something different. Istead of me taking medication, how about you skipping yours. Sobriety is a wonderfull thing. You should try it.

Automated comment generator
Has anyone noticed that YRMML's posts look like a bunch of randomized sentences generated by poorly written software?

I have seen this person's (if it really is a person) comments in thread after thread on TH and they all make about as much sense as a first grade child of an illegal alien trying to complete his first english writing assignment. In fact, most of the comments are interchangeable regardless of thread.

Please ignore his comments as they are stereotypical trolling.

Thanks and have a good night.

Fitzgerald FINALLY tags Libby
But not for the reason he was asked to. Armitage admitted early on that he was the one who did the dastardly deed. but Fitzgerald charged him to remain silent till the end of that trial. The real criminal here is Fitzgerald.

After Bush appointed Fitz, Schumer got face time on television gushing about how HONEST Fitz was. Reminds me of a little scenario I encounteered a few years ago where a contractor I had the misfortune to use constantly told me about how HONEST his superintendant was. Then the superentindant would tell me how HONEST the contractor was. Turns out they were both trying to cheat me and were cheating each other.

Is it possible that Schumer promissed Fitz he would support him for New York atty. general if he could nail Libby for something? Just an idea.

On Michael Reagan's Rant
How many times can the rightwingers trot out a Clinton flaw to provide some kind of cover for the Bush Bunch?

Let's deflate that argument immediately. Some of the Clinton pardons seem like a miscarriage of justice. Not all but some. There. Done.

Now onto the Libby commutation. The jury appparently found Libby to be less than truthful when he lied about what he knew. Period.

Simple logic solves this whole case: If no crime was committed by the White House staff (including the President), then why not make that the case right from the beginning? Instead, the White House pretends it doesn't what happened or why or how, and in the end, Libby obstructs the case and becomes the fall guy, and Bush commutes his sentence, the fine is more than covered by the defense fund collected on Libby's part and so we skip on...

It's amazingly simple to analyze these situations if you just ask yourself: if these people are innocent, how would they act? If they different from that, then they are either not innocent or they have something to hide.

MM

What about those who are attacking you from your right flank. All you hypocrites tend to ignore our comments because it doesn't fit your canned argument. That goes for a good many of you. We impeached Clinton for perjury. Libby was convicted of perjury, why are you guys making excuses for a felon? I didn't support Clinton and neither did others in comments above. You Busheviks going to doom us to decades of socialism. The people you support are socialists themselves. Who was better on entitlement spending, Clinton or Bush? The only way something like this could happen in a Republican administration is sheepish support for socialist policy. You may not personally believe in socialism but you guys seem to support the guy who signs the bills that bloats government bigger and BIGGER. You guys have completely surrendered your principles and defending a perjurer is just too much. Once again "Conservative" ethics should not be based on or justified by the acts of scoundrels of the past administration.

Gill Gripper
So, to all you Libs out there who keep posting that it's "all about the law", and "the law is the only thing that we have that separates us from other countries", etc, etc, etc, won't mind if we start deporting illegal aliens since, they too broke the law. The left in this country is, by far, the most hypocritical body that ever was, yet some people just don't seem to realize it, and I can't figure out why.

Libby's COMMUTATION only means that he doesn't have to sit in jail while he APPEALS the decision. There still is a chance that he will be found INNOCENT on appeal and then that will make this whole discussion irrelevantly.

You guys on the left are just angry because you couldn't get Rove or Bush, so you settled for Libby, and now feel that you didn't even get him.

justice for wealthy and influential
I'm both outraged by Clinton's pardons as well as Bush commuting Libby's jail sentence. All this underscores that fact that the wealthy and politically connected are subject to one set of rules while the rest of us live by another. What about the rule of law? Another fine example for the children!

Clinton Values - Hypocrisy & Adultery
So The Liberals are offended by President Bush commuting the sentence of Scooter Libby. What was Libby’s crime? That he couldn’t recall a conversation verbatim? Richard Armitage admitted to outing Valerie Plame. Joseph Wilson introduced his wife to people as a CIA agent. Should Joseph Wilson go to jail? Valerie Plame WAS NOT a covert agent at the time! So what is this all about? Is Joseph Wilson running out of money AGAIN? Why doesn’t The Lazy Bum (Wilson) get A JOB? By the way, how much time did Sandy Burglar serve for his crime? How much time did Bill Clinton serve for his crime(s)? How many people did Bill Clinton pardon IN ONE DAY?! John Murtha was caught on videotape discussing how big a bribe he would take! How much jail-time has John ‘Cut and Run Coward’ Murtha served? Marc Foley was booted from The GOP for making sexual overtures to teenage House pages. Gerry Studds was GIVEN A STANDING OVATION IN THE US CAPITOL BUILDING for admitting to a SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP with a teenage House page. Congressman William Jefferson is under indictment for being caught with $90,000 of bribe money in his freezer. It will be interesting to see how much time he serves. In Ann Coulter’s latest book, ‘Godless, The Church of Liberalism’, Ann expresses serious doubt as to whether Liberals can differentiate between Right and Wrong. Based on the aforementioned evidence, I have to agree with her.
THEY CAN’T!

Mac Moore
Yrmml is a 15 year-old troll who gets up in the afternoon, changes the Rubber Sheets on his bed and starts posting MoveOn Talking Points to TownHall. He is too stupid to even be a Bureaucrat!

do I recall correctly

Hey, isn't Robert, the guy who's such a stickler for the law, one that was supporting "comprehensive" immigration reform, the core purpose of which was to shred the rule of law when it comes to immigration?

cynacism
once again is ruling the day and clouding judgement on this board.

To all who responded to me
Of course I see the ridiculousness of the Libby trial. He was scapegoated or railroaded, but I don't want Bush to pardon him yet. I want Scooter to have the opportunity to clear his name. The fact that he was scapegoated, along with the Starr fiasco is why I am sick to death of special prosecutors who are obliged by the very position to produce something. It's one giant power trip forced to justify it's power trip. Waste of Time, and money. I knew when ol'Patrick was appointed another fiasco was going to ensue, just like Starr. What did Starr produce in the end? Nothing. Drudge was the one who cracked the Clinton case. Fitzgerald should be put under a microscope like Nifong quite frankly. His backyard BBQ's with Russert are quite unethical to say the least.

YRMML
Your b.s. post at 11:04am was typical of Stalinists like you. And I particularly love your rant about how you "really care" for children. For example your quote which is always one of my favorites by you Stalinists hypocrites:

"What will we tell the children?"

You mean the children you and your ilk like to kill in the womb?

Stress retards the immune system
Perhaps Tony should rethink his job. Face it; he has been put into some very... awkward spots. He really ought to consider departing before both his health and reputation are no more. What you permit you condone.

A comment
When I was a public defender, the prosecutor charged my juvenile defendant with "intimidation of a witness". At the beginning of trial, I moved the Court to compel the prosecutor to say what he was a witness to. She said "nothing". I therefore moved to dismiss the count. The judge was trying not to laugh out loud while he dismissed the charge. That left us with some silly misdemeanor. Case over.
This Libby case seems the same to me. He did't out Valerie Plame. In fact, no one could have outed her since she wasn't a covert operative. I fact that the liberal newspapers never include in their stories about this case. I agree with the poster that said that once Fitzgerald knew that Armitage had done the outing that he should have closed his investigation against Libby. But his paychecks and the glory of all of that media attention would have stopped. This has been a travesty of justice. I just hope that Bush sees his way clear to pardon Libby before he leaves office.
As for the poster who said that once Libby agreed to work for "the Cheney presidency he should have know he would have to take one for the team", displays an amazing disregard for facts and justice. One, it is not a Cheney presidency. And two, since Libby didn't out Plame, she and her silly civil lawsuit should go to H E Double Hockey Sticks.

Constitution Outweighs Rules
YouRepugsMakeMeLaugh, "So, they made those rules for everybody, BUT BUSH!!"

For you bureaucrats, America would be just fine, if it were not for that silly Constitution. It keeps getting in the way of all those "rules" that make you so happy.

Such as, in Bush's two elections, a fellow bureaucrat would surely have found a "rule" to flip the votes of Florida and Ohio, if it were not for that silly Constitution getting in the way of granting such soveriegnty to the States.

In America, the Law and the "rules" follow the Constitution. Not the other way around.

It truly must be frustrating for you.

Pardon me
Hmmm... cant seem to remember what I said about whats her name several years ago but in any case I did not have sex with that woman. Anybody know what is is? Whats that saying? "Much ado about nothing"?

Political Trial
This has always been a politically motivated trial. There was no crime committed (Armitage was the "leaker" and he hasn't been indicted or prosecuted because it really wasn't a threat to national security or Plame's "cover"). Follow the thread, children. It will take you to the Gingerbread house known as Partisanship. Libby is the fall guy because the witch hunt could only come up with him as the "highest ranking official in the Bush administration." He never should have been on trial in the first place.

If anybody deserves a full pardon it's Libby, but I see that allowing only a commutation of the jail time might leave room for him to pursue vindication through the courts. Too bad I have no confidence in our justice system.

I wish we could sue the prosecutor for wasting our tax dollars on such trumped up charges.

I agree with those of you who have lost confidence in W. Compian and Ramos should be FREE!

Laugh
You always like to comment that you feel sorry for our children. I'm just pointing out the likelihood that I cannot return the favor because your side does not value life and feels it is OK to kill babies. One adjustment. Your side doesn't care about INNOCENT life. You are more than happy to try and protect the scum of the earth.

YouRepugsMakeMeLaugh, The Bureaucrat
YouRepugsMakeMeLaugh, offers, "So, they made those rules for everybody, BUT BUSH!!"

None of the "Rules" are in Article II of the Constitution. It is more important than the bureaucratic "rules" procedures put in place to support it. Many people tend to get the two confused, especially bureaucrats, like you.

In the end, it is all about the Constitution, which states, " .....he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States"

The Constitution is the Law. You are quoting "rules" like a bureaucrat, which is probably your comfort zone.

Maybe a bureaucrat will, in deed, challenge President Bush's decision on procedural grounds, such as not following your "rules". That "rule" challenge will be held against the Constitution and weighed accordingly. Which do you think will prevail.... the Constitution? or the "rules"?

My money is on the Constitution.

YRMML
I'm saying so. List all the CONVICTIONS in "BushCo". That means CONVICTIONS and CONVICTIONS ONLY.

You don't get to use ANY of your pet lib hate-Bush paranoid conspiracy theories unless they resulted in a CONVICTION.

That's the problem with some people. They have no concept of comparing apples only to apples. They keep wanting to throw in other fruit.

You want to compare 30 convictions that were proven in court to "conflicts" that are based on your own self-declared critieria, with your own self-declared "evidence".

This is on top of the FACT that there were real convictions of real crimes by the Clintonites and you have asserted that the investigations resulted in a "big nothing". Ask the people who went to jail if they thought it was "nothing".

Moron.

This kind of "credible" assessment and summarization makes me wonder how accurate other "truths" asserted by left are, like "No WMD in Iraq". Is that as accurate as your "big nothing"?

No Joke
Just keep killing your voter replacements in the womb, or half-way out. Regardless, your numbers will dwindle as a result.

sanityone
While we're on the subject of things libs forget, let's talk a little national security.

The lib argument is that Libby should go to jail because he conspired to out a CIA agent, which harmed national security. Worse, they claim, he has refused to divulge all the gory details of who else was involved and what else they were up to.

Pardon me (no pun intended) while I puke.

Valerie Plame was/is insignificant to national security. According to a Novak column this week even the CIA conceded that outing Plame did not meet the critiria for violating the 1982 Intelligence act.

But Bubba, who had the balls to criticize Bush yesterday, approved the sale of ballistic missile technology to Communist China in return for campaign contributions. Thanks to Bubba Chinese nukes can now reach most of our major cities.

But that's OK, because he's a lib. Libs can sh*t all over national security and other libs in the media will still applaud their approval numbers. Just like libs can sexually harass secretaries and feminists will still offer to give them oral sex, "just for keeping abortion legal".

Lolo you...
took some of the words out of my mouth regarding wasting money. Let me add one difference. Why isn't the MSM crying and wringing their hands over the money wasted in the Plame affair? Especially since early on, Fitzgerald knew there was no underlying crime and he knew Armitage was the leaker. Typical MSM hypocrisy.

You liberals do make me laugh about "protecting the children" but it is a waste of time. Your children are all dead, you like to kill them in the womb.

YouRepugsMakeMeLaugh Becomes A Joke
YouRepugsMakeMeLaugh offers, "Mac Moore So rules don't apply to BUSH! President's Privilege isn't really a get out of jail free card without following the RULES

Read the WHOLE thing, AGAIN"

You are still hung up on your bureaucracy as if it overrides the Constitution. Read the Constitution, first. It is the over-riding authority, not bureauracry.

It must be difficult to understand from a bureaucratic perspective.

Clinton Was Impeached But Not Impeached
YouRepugsMakeMeLaugh offers "Clinton acquitted? YES! Yes, as I said President Bill Clinton was acquitted by the Senate of charges he committed perjury and obstructed justice."

Impeach, unfortunately, has two definitions, one has to do with formally bringing charges against someone, and secondly, to remove from office.

Many people confuse the definitions. Sometimes, even in the same conversation and context.

So, using the same fun logic, Clinton, although, impeached, was not impeached.

YRMML
"During the Clinton years, when this same crowd was not draining the Treasury to launch one bogus investigation after another, all of which came up big nothing,..."

There were something like 30 convictions of Clinton Administration officials, including Henry Cisneros, the highest ranking government official ever found guilty of a felony. That list doesn't even include Bubba himself, who was found to be in contempt of court, because technically this is not a "conviction". It does however include 10 or 11 people who were indicted and convicted in Whitewater alone.

It does NOT include Billy Dale, who the Clintons tried to frame as an embezzler to cover their tracks when they fired the entire White House Travel Office staff so they could give the work to their Little Rock cronies.

You are way out in the deep water here. The administration of the GHWB was squeaky clean and, compared to Clinton, so is the administration of GWB.

It is only blind rage and blatant partisanship that has you and the lib media complaining about Libby. And if you want to complain go ahead, but don't lie about the record. Clinton and his people were filthy dirty. And the lib media supported them and excused them and apologized for them the whole time they were in office because they were liberals.

Rage against the "injustice" all you want. You can even lie to yourself and convince yourself that the Republicans were wasting the taxpayers' money. But don't try to lie to us by claiming they wound up with a big nothing. They proved plenty of corruption under Clinton, and found even more that couldn't be proved.

forgot some
You forgot to mention the FALN terrorist group members that were pardoned buy Clinton - possibly to aid Hillary in getting Peurto Rican votes in New York.
Oh, and "redstates.." you can't get over using the BJ defense - WC commited and perjoined perjury and was impeached. He could have been removed from office. HIllary denied (could not recall) where certain documents were yet they were found later in her office later.
If you can get hold of a tape called Clinton chronicles and buy into 1/3 of it, you may no longer feel that way about him.

Lolo
I'm down with you on special prosecutors. Starr may have been overzealous, but Fitzgerald kicked it up to notches unknown by man(to borrow a phrase). As soon as he knew the identity of the leaker of Valerie Plame's identity(Armitege) he was ethically bound to wrap up the investigation, but in order to keep the paychecks coming in kept it going until he found a scalp to put on his totem pole. Unlike The Dope from Hope who knowingly gave false testimony to a grand jury to evade civil and criminal penalties, Libby was a low level witness whose actions were not the focus of the GJ. Add to that the statements of jurrors who claimed after the trial that they felt obligated "to convict someone", the whole fiasco adds up to scapegoating in the extreme.
Another topic- when I heard of who "Billy Wadd" Clinton pardoned, Icould hardly keep my lunch down, but I bit my tongue real hard because I knew that as POTUS he had the absolute power to do so, but we all know what absolute power does in spades.

Cavebear
...made some very good points in his post of 8:18. I would like to add this.

Imagine that you are working for the Bush administration and you start getting flac for an op-ed written by a former diplomat who took a trip to Niger in which he claims that, in the process of drinking mint tea by the hotel pool and talking to his buds in the uranium mining business, has proven that Iraq never attempted to buy uranium in Africa.

It would have to pique your curiosity. At some point you're asked (by Bush?, Cheney?, Rove?) to find out who sent such an unqualified idiot on an intelligence gathering mission. You put out some feelers, talk to a few people, and in fairly short order, you turn up the fact that he's the husband of Valerie Plame, who is involved in the investigation of WMD for the CIA. It wasn't difficult obtaining this information; in fact it is apparently common knowledge in certain circles. Your curiosity is now in full gear, wondering why Wilson was sent and who sent him. So you talk to a few more people and so on.

Now, imagine that you're Scooter Libby, and you have first-hand knowledge about these inquiries. You are now, several years later, at trial, asked to recall all of these conversations. How would you do?

Now, we're still at square one. Valerie has changed her story several times, and Joe's assertions have been shot full of holes, and we still don't know why he was sent.

Wilson dreamed of the day that Karl Rove would be "frog-marched out of the Whitehouse in hand cuffs". So why didn't he express the same sentiments about Armitage? It should be obvious to any sentient being that it was a setup specifically to nail a top Whitehouse official.

I'm sure that the investigative reporters will be all over this one. ;-)

YouRepugsMakeMeLaugh ... Likewise
YouRepugsMakeMeLaugh, offers, "President's Privilege isn't really a get out of jail free card without following the RULES

Read the WHOLE thing!"

None of the "Rules" are in Article II of the Constitution. It is more important than the bureaucratic procedures put in place to support it. Many people tend to get the two confused.

In the end, it is all about the Constitution, which states, " .....he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States"

The Constitution is the Law. You are quoting like a bureaucrat, which is probably your comfort zone.

Bribery, kickbacks and Clintons
While people may differ about whether Bush should have commuted Libby's sentence, there can be no doubt but that he was not motivated by greed. It is certainly possible that a reasonable man could conclude that Libby was being punished, not just for perjury, but for the whole Valerie Plame debacle (even though no crime was committed in revealing her name).

This is very different from they cynical ploy the Clintons used to raise campaign funds, and to attract business to Hillary's brother. The Clintons have a long history of money-laundering, kickbacks, and dirty backroom deals that would make a Kennedy blush.

While it is true that nobody has ever been able to make a case against them in court, this is largely because Bill PARDONED anyone who could have flipped on them. Lets not forget that Al Capone was never convicted of anything more than tax evasion; by Clinton logic I guess that means he was never a gangster.

Clinton was acquitted?
Clinton was acquitted? I don't remember Clinton going to trial, except of course the kangaroo court in the Senate. Purely political justice, the kind lefties prefer.

President's Privilege
If the President has the Executive Privilege to pardon as prescribed by Constitution...

" .....he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States"

What is the big deal? His predecessors followed this rule and so did Bush. They were right and he is right.

Of course, to some, if Bush breathes, he must be wrong .... kind of like the old joke about husbands.

Why is Hillary not in jail?
Bush did what he normally does. A half measure certain to satisfy no one and still stir up a hornets nest. If what Libby did was so bad why is Hillary not behind bars for "Forgetting?"

Mountain Rose
Your post at 9:06 about leftie losers nails it.

Special Prosecutors
Quite frankly I am sick to death of these appointments wasting millions of dollars in tax money to justify their existance. I was sick of it with Ken Starr and I am most certainly sick of it with Fitzgerald.

I lived in Arkansas
When clinton was Governor. He lost his second term. He then right before he was leaving office, pardoned a whole bunch of criminals. Everyone in the state was outraged. THEN, he ran again, he apologized and whined about the mistakes he made, and much, as now, people fell for it, and elected him again. He had also said he wouldn't run for president if he was elected. Guess what? He did!! Boy oh boy, they're good at what they do, in the way of lies, and serious deceit!!

modernone
do you mean like Hillary Clinton said "I don't remember" over 100 times? Another ridiculous statement on your part.

Black Dog
Do you just stay in the land of stupid moral reletivism? There's no point in arguing with you because you aren't even on the same playing field. You traded in common sense for partisanship a long time ago. You aren't worthy of debate.

pretty funny
What I am to have learned from this article and the discussion is

- the system is broke. The judge, prosecutor, and jury is worthless for justice. At least in this specific case but not if you don't like the person being prosecuted.

- Its fine to do something if someone else has done it before whether wrong or right. Especially if the person who did it before you do not like.

- An effective defense for anything is I don't remember.

Good stuff to teach our kids. I presume all scooter supporters spent Independence Day drilling these ideals into their children's heads.

Oh, and I am sure you did not forget to teach them about "take care of your own at all costs."

No wonder we have legislation proposed to protect law breakers who are in the country illegally and to protect those who hire them. The law is only there when we want to enforce it. Kinda like any dictatorship. Democrat or Republican.

Justice is dying in the US from the top to the bottom.

Well written Jimmy,Cave Bear & marine43
Btw, on this quote from the original article:

> Hugh Rodham returned the payments after they were disclosed to the public. <

I know he *said* that, but was it ever verified that he *actually* returned the money?

Who is "Robert"?

I haven't laughed so hard in weeks.

And I have to agree, that for "Robert" to have written all that drivel... he simply must be George Soros.

Hi, George. What meds are you on?

Still laughing.

YOU HYPOCRITES ARE BEAUTIFUL…

The prosecutor said it was OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE.
The Bush-appointed judge said it was OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE.
But no need to investigate this cover-up of possible crimes – these are all good ole boys!

Libby Got "Nifonged"
Imagine if Mike Nifong kept investigating the Duke
case long after he knew that there was no crime
(which he did), but in the process charged the
defendants with perjury because of inconsistent
statements. Now imagine that it happened more
than three years after the original event. I can
only imagine the outrage.

The Duke case and the Scooter Libby case are
essentially the same, except that the Libby case
is worse. Much more time has passed in the Libby
case and charges were filed fraudulently.

George Bush did exactly the right thing in this
case, for the moment. He came up with a solution
that would allow Libby to remain free while the
appeal was going forward, correcting the error of
the appeals court, yet allowing Libby to
opportunity to have this verdict overturned in the
courts.

If I were Scooter Libby I certainly would not have
wanted a pardon. I would want an appeals court
ruling that would re-establish the integrity of
the court by overturning the case, and dismissing
it with prejudice. I would want vindication.
Furthermore, both the Judge and Patrick Fitzgerald
need to be censured and possibly disbarred.

Had Libby been allowed to remain free pending
appeal George Bush would have had to do nothing,
all that would have remained is for someone in a
black robe to prove that the system has integrity.
The hand-wringing over how awful Bush was for
doing this in this case is simple proof that some
people love their hatred far more than they love
honesty and fairness.

Hamilton

Hmmmmmmmm
James Comey shuts down the investigation of Clinton's pardons. Then he hires his buddy Patrick Fitzgerald. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Frog...
are you saying we should forgoe principles for politcial gain?
You recognize that it was a sham, but you don't want the sham corrected because it polls bad? That is to close to liberal for me.

I also disagree with the premise that this will hurt the GOP. You have to fight and fight and fight against the left and the media. Just like in everything else, appeasment never works.

Billary
How much harder must the Clinton's push before you people realize they are trashing the Constitution? Bill Clinton is precluded from being President ever again by virtue of the 22d Amendment to the Constitution which was ratified pursuant to Article V. When a President is elected to office, he or she must sell all their stocks or put them in a "blind trust" so as to demonstrate no conflict of interest on legislation effecting the economy. Hillary has stated on numerous occasions, you will get 2 for 1 if I am elected and some syndicated columnist even refer to her now as "Billary". Bill Clinton should recuse himself from all government activity during Hillary's tenure should she win.
This should include a strict provision limiting Bill Clinton's access to just the living quarters in the White House. That is not cruel, Hillary will have chosen these limits by running, and I believe there is a valid court argument that could be made reference the potential for purposely attempting to violate or circumvent the 22d Amendment. Bill Clinton is not just another First Lady(man)--he has no business in those portions of the White House where National Interest and security decisions are made. Bill Clinton's preclusion is specific;it is an amendment to the Constitution. This attempt to further degrade our Constitution must be stopped or the vote of we "The People" means nothing.

No surprises
The hypocracy shown by the left is just more of the same stuff they have shoveled for decades, just another day. There is no surprise at the denial of bias either.

cave bear- the Leftie Liars rely on the
short memory of others to win an argument.

When you make a good, sound argument with good, solid facts, they act as if you never said anything and just keep spouting their George Soros-supplied talking points.

Refute a point of theirs with logic, and do you think they are going to answer you in kind? Of course not. In most cases, these empty-headed fools do not think for themselves and only rely on the scripts provided for them by the Daily Kos.

THEY DON'T HAVE AN ANSWER, BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T THOUGHT THE ISSUE THROUGH TO ITS LOGICAL CONCLUSION. If they had thought it through, they would no longer be a leftist.

Instead, they will just return to the list that their Fearless Leader faxed them, and hope no one notices.

Ollie North is a great American Hero
and it is too bad that the Leftie Losers feel that they need to waste their time and my tax dollars chasing after the good men in this country like a pack of hyeneas.

Meanwhile, they are desperate to release REAL criminals and REAL terrorists who are REAL threats to the United States of America.

What is odd to me is that they think this hysterical behavior is going to attract voters.

They may get a few dope smoking rebels into their camp, but in my experience, fools like that forget what day it is and fail to make it to the polls on election day.

Better not mention that or the Left will come up with another idiotic scheme to allow dope smokers to vote two weeks late if they have a note from their doctor.

HIPO HIPO HIPOCRISY!!!
When asked to pardon Ramos and Compean - in prison for doing their job - Prez told them to use "regular channels"...

Clintonian Hypocrisy
Forgive the redundancy in my subject-line...Clinton and Hypocrisy are really synonymous. Anyway, here's what I did to tweak the noses of Senators Hillary and Chuckie. I cut-and-pasted the entire list of January 20, 2001 commutations and pardons issued by Slick Willy on his last day in the Oval Orifice into emails to both Chuck and Hill. I added a brief commentary at the beginning to the effect that the list includes drug and weapons traffickers, felons and members of the Puerto Rican terrorist group FALN (an overt gift of the PR vote in New York for Hillary's first Senatorial campaign) and finished with, "Now why don't you just shut up!"
Maybe if they each got THOUSANDS of similar messages someone, somewhere might take notice. Maybe not, but it felt good clicking "sned" on those two emails.

Robert
You think you know the law and you don't even know how to use the spell-checker. How sad. How many cops does it take to replace a light bulb?

Bob- I agree! The President may not
have to fight fire with fire, but at least he could try fighting with water!

I want to pull my hair out when Repubs make gentlemanly replies to the Leftie Liars who spout absurdities so easily.

People always reply to the Lefties like they are chatting with their crazy Uncle Eddie, who wears tinfoil on his head, and they don't want to hurt their feelings by pointing out the truth.

We don't have to get down on their level and sling mud too: all we have to say is "my esteemed colleague is full of *bleep!*"

now free the border agents
Folks the one thing that screams out to me is "FREE RAMOS AND COMPEAN !!!" We supported this administration through all the left attacks, but this refusal to pardon these two men i find criminal. It seems to me that Pres Bush cares more about Mexico than he does America.I believe in this whole issue (border security, S.P.P.ORG.)Weve all been had.Sadly..

Another thing about Tony
I admire his courage, and I hope that everyone will join me in praying for his continuing good health.

BP Agents = Hypocracy
To paraphrase Michael Reagan, anyone who saw George Bush commute Scooter Libby's 30-month sentence because it's "excessive" while the Border Patrol agents rot in jail for more than 10 years understands the meaning of hypocracy.

Wait, I almost forgot Gringo Jorge and his henchmen put them in prison. gotta follow orders from Mexico City.

Bush lacks balls
The problem Snow had was because Bush hasn't got the balls to say that the whole conviction was a politically motivated farce, and if the Dem's keep trying to destroy his administration by fraudulent criminal proceedings he will pardon anyone else involved too. He needs to tell the Dem's to use the election process, not the criminal process if they want to control Washington. But Bush hasn't the balls to say so, which leaves Snow unable to speak clearly.

The howling pack of jackels are at it
again.

There seems to be a consensus among the wacky Left that if you act like an enraged Donald Duck over ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, and do it for long enough, you will succeed into making a mountain out of a mole hill... and succeed in making it stick.

The biggest problem is that their absurd antics go unchallanged by conservatives, who behave as if it is beneath their dignity to answer.

Thank goodness for Tony Snow, who does have an answer for the howling mob. He speaks right up and points out their hypocracy.

All Republicans must do this. Don't just look at Shrillary like she has sprouted another head: she is speaking to an audience who went to schools run by Lefties who reinforce her nonsense.

Everytime
Robert gets involved, at least half of the comments end up being directed back to his drivel. It's a lot of scrolling we have to do to get past it.

Agree with those who give a high-five to Tony. It is absolutely about time that the White House calls the Clintons on their ridiculous and unethical behavior. Many of us remember Bill's last day in office. There wasn't even a quarter of the media attention to his outrageous 140 pardons as there was to this one commutation of Libby's jail sentence.

Pardons?
If I recall correctly, somebody posted a list of all the Clinton's last minute pardons (pardons, not commutations) here on TH the other day. It made for interesting reading, to say the least.

Most of the people on that list no one had ever heard of, and most of them had been convicted of things like drug trafficking, money laundering, wire fraud, embezzlement, etc. And it was a damned long list, too.

Now along comes this Scooter Libby thing, and GWB commutes (not pardons, commutes) his sentence. There IS a difference, to all except the usual brain-dead lefties.

Anyone who has looked at this entire Valerie Plame "outing" mess dispassionately can see that this was yet another half-baked attempt by the Dims to hang something, anything on the Bush administration. These shots have been going on now for well-nigh seven years now, and they (the Dimocrats) keep striking out. The simple fact is, that while we can complain mightily (and God knows a lot of us have, and I'm not talking about dimbulbs like Robert either) about some of the bad decisions made by the Bush administration, when it comes to running an ethical administration, Bush and company have actually done very well. (I would remind all of you that just because someone makes a boneheaded decision on this or that issue does not make it illegal.)

The Plame matter is an excellent case in point. It is now a dead issue, except for Scooter Libby, who most people had never even heard of until a year or so ago. He was not even convicted of this "outing" of Ms. Plame that was supposed to have taken place (of course, it's rather hard to blow the cover of a "covert CIA operative" who is neither covert nor an operative, but when have little details like this ever stopped the Dims on their neverending hunt for some Repub scalps).

No, Mr. Libby, after 2+ years and several million dollars worth of lawyer's fees, was convicted of...getting caught in a swearing match with....wait for it....TIM RUSSERT!

A swearing match? "He said/she said"? With a LSM Dimocrat hack like Tim Russert? And when you get down to it, that is all it was. Of course, it didn't help that he had a stacked jury, many of whom publicly admitted after the trial that they were out to nail somebody, anybody, from the Bush administration over the Iraq war, and they just had to settle for Scooter Libby. And has been pointed out already today, let's not forget the whole prosecutorial misconduct thing, as in invoking "facts" not presented in evidence, little things like that.

Indeed, it's not hard to figure why GWB did what he did and when. Bush was probably like a lot of people with more than two brain cells to rub together, who realized that Libby's conviction, which had holes in it big enough to drive the Sixth Fleet through and not scrape paint, would almost certainly be overturned on appeal. But then the judge (appointed by GHWB, not GWB; wish you boneheads would get your facts straight just once) does something rather unusual under the circumstances. He hands down the "go to jail now, don not collect $200" card. So Bush, who knows this whole thing is BS to start with, simply commutes Libby's jail sentence, leaving him to pursue his appeals unencumbered. After all, it's not like Libby was going to do a Marc Rich and split the country...:)

Deal with it, boys and girls. Given all the squirrely aspects of this entire affair, it's no big surprise that Bush did what he did.

BTW, as for "I was no-billed seven times" Robert, you've had to use your weapon SEVEN times as a LEO? Huh? Most lawmen (such as my father, who was a street cop with the Houston PD for thirty years) go their whole career without having to fire their weapon outside of a pistol range, nor even have to pull it all that often. Very strange...

Pardons
Mike I saw the outrage at Tony Snow and immediately recalled Clinton's pardons and trysts etc. Hillary will have a "hard time" straddling this fencepost! The left wing media are a perverse crowd indeed! Maybe some Viagra would help? Their fangs are showing, big time. Perhaps it is due to "limp" journalistic ethics and concepts like honesty and fair play! They have been caught with their pants down too...their response is a giant Kumbayahh session in group therapy! Grandmaster Ro

The hypocrisy of people like you and clinton gang
makes my blood boil.
The clintons would have been in prison for 50yrs
had it not been for equally evil & crooked people
of the same stripe.
It is bastards like you who will start the next
revolution in this country.

libs...
On a thread a few months ago a poster said something that fits the libs and their attitudes so well........ "they've been drinking the hateraid again."

Someone Please Explain To Me...
what a pardon is all about, if it is not to give the President the power to correct an injustice in the legal system. I don't understand how this commutation undermines the legal system. G.W. Bush was elected President by the people of this country and henceforth entrusted with the powers of the Presidency. One of those powers is the power to pardon or commute a ruling or sentencing he judges (as weighed against the evidence) as an injustice. It appears to me that this is part of the legal system...not and undermining of it. Obviously this power can be abused...as with the Clintons.

There are those that want to say Republicans are "laughable" and simply saying, "Clinton did bad things too, so we shouldn't be responsible for anything we do."

That is nonsense. We are merely pointing out that this is one case with an overwhemling amount of reason for a commutation or, as I would like it, a Pardon. This is as compared to many of Clintons pardons, that if forced to explain, the former President would be hard pressed to give sound reasoning other than to pad his pocket and prop up his wife's media and coat tail manufactured politcal career.

You might be a leftist...
...if commuting Scooter Libby's sentence upsets you more than pardoning 12 million illegal aliens.

Scooter Libby
Michael, Right on Brother. It's sad that the far left has so much influence on our naive, and easily persuaded, citizens of this great USA. Their SAVIOUR not only commuted but PARDONED droves of proven and convicted DRUG DEALERS, TRAITORS, and RICH THIEVES who put their money in the "right places", and performed loyal deeds in return for their forgiveness. These same people still believe he is the second coming. They will do and say anything in order to get him back in POWER, including electing his wife as president. The people of this great country need to spend more time researching the truth and less time agreeing with false prophets, who are masters at DECIEPTION. Keep up the good work Michael. GOD BLESS OUR PRESIDENT who is doing everything in his power to protect this FREEDOM RICH COUNTRY, and GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS and ALLIES in harms way, who lay their lives on the line in order for us to live in the land of MILK & HONEY. Thanks for letting me speak my mind, Mike from Hobbs, NM

Hillary is such a stupid......
fill in your own expletive. I guess she thinks we forgot how miserable their co presidency was. 356 total pardons, the Clintons were handing them out like candy. Chuck Schumer is laughable as a senator and/or a model for ethics. He should keep his hypocracy to himself.

Okey ....
that done, now what about the two border cops and the Marines that George threw over the fence to the dogs?
George was really a bad experience as were the Clintons .... God, please have mercy on us.

Patriotism v. Patronism
Excellent piece. Anything to continue to show the hypocrisy of our would-be first 1st-Lady and her ex, the ex-Pres, is great. I only wish that the White House was bolder in keeping these types of truths in front of the American people. Its about time we protect those that are loyally serving this country.

Neither Side
Neither side has any scruples when it comes to money and influence. Ever here the phrase, 'Yeah, the are crooks, but they are my crooks?' Or as some Southern politicains used to admit, 'I took the money and you know what I'm going to do with it? I'm going to have a party and you are all invited.' All to thunderous applause. After all, he was our crook.

Only what the other side did was bad.

acetate,Brian
I needed a spew alert for loot and scoot!!! Robert is a lunatic and is adjusting things to fit. Typical. Brian, you got it right, as always.

And of course
...watching the Clintons "distinguish" Bill's pardons has been interesting- I would enjoy it more if I didn't believe that somewhere between 47-51% of the American public is going "Oh, ok, we see the difference. DAMN THAT GEORGE BUSH !!!"

incognito . . . .
well, let's see . . . . . where to start . . . ?

okay, let's say you were rail-roaded by an over-zealous prosecutor, and you knew that you were screwed over. now, let's say that the president has reviewed the case and agrees with you.

they correct a gross injustice and libby is not remorseful because, once again, he did nothing wrong. i suppose his mistake was not throwing out serial "i don't recalls" like the clintons when they were under oath.

i hope i don't get hauled in front of a grand jury and asked what i said to aunt sally three weeks ago last friday . . . because i might not remember exactly.

clinton, on the other hand, submitted a false affidavit, suborned perjury, and wagged his finger at the American public while lying through his teeth.

Ah, hell . . . . i don't even know why i bother . . .

Holy crap!
Most of the comments seem to be debates involving Moonbeam Roberto!

Get a grip, guys!

The issue here is liberal inconsistency.

Clinton pardoned a large group of people including FALN (sp?), Puerto Rican terrorists, who planted bombs in Congress. Okay with the MSM/Dems. Those pardoned included folks paying peripheral Clintonistas greenbacks, including FOBs and Clinton family members. No sweat!!!

Bush COMMUTES -- doesn't pardon, COMMUTES -- the sentence of one guy convicted on specious evidence of in reality saying "I don't recall" (the favored Hillary defense) -- and the MSM/Dems goe wild.

Clinton, upon taking office, arbitrarily fires almost 100 AGs, and the MSM/Dems take no notice.

Bush fires 8, and it's a Constitutional crisis.

Sandy Burglar wobbles out of the National Archives with classified documents stuffed in his socks to the point where he's got a crane following him to keep him upright, and the MSM/Dems are okay with that.

Valerie Plame and Joe Mrs Plame make accusations substantiated by absolutely nothing, and Libby is ruined. Prison commutation notwithstanding, he's ruined.

Reminds me of Bush's support of border sucuridad, in which Campion and Ramos are sitting in the Fed Pen for shooting a drug-runner and coyote in the butt in return-fire; the same case in which the Drug Trafficker was granted immunity to return to testify, and has subsequently been further arrested for drug dealing, amomg other crimes.

Well, there you have it . . . .
The Kansas City Star has spoken (written, actually). A non-partisan beacon of light that has led us to full knowledge and enlightenment.

That settles it!

"Fitzgerald just couldn't fight the allure of the spot-light."

You might consider what a gravey train Fitz was riding for two plus years over the course of this sorry prosecution. What would have happened to his gig if he conducted an honest investigation, revealed the Armitage connection and determined Plame was no more covert than any other federal bureaucrat? The public sure got a lot of bang for the buck in this affair.

Besides, the CIA has long since outlived its usefulness - it's already been riddled with spies and traitors, it's overly politicized, and can't even recruit and deal with the shady type of characters that produces real intellegence.

That's what this whole thing was: a tragi-farce.

Robert, how much are you...
getting paid by George Soros for spewing your BS on TownHall?

Why the Denial?
Fitzgerald - Republican prosecutor hired by Bush

Walton - Judge appointed by Bush

But it must be a conspiracy by Democrats.

Good comedy, guys, keep it up.

________________________________________________

No denial . . . . my read is this:

Regardless of who appointed whom . . . this thing stinks. I looks like a bunch of lawyers got their panties in a knot because they thought somebody lied to them. They took their eye off the ball - which was the whole reason for the investigation to begin with.

And, by the way, just because the jury returned a guilty verdict, does not mean that they should have.

I see no one has taken my challenge to explain why he would have lied when there was nothing to hide.

dance on the head of pin all you like, but those of us with common sense smell a rat. Fitzgerald just couldn't fight the allure of the spot-light.

Rupert Murdoch and the Clintons
None other than Rupert Murdoch is an FOB. Former President Bush hangs out with Bill all the time.

The public display of fighting is nothing more, a display. Wake up people. Don't be surprised it the next Democratic President gives Scooter a full pardon.

Because if you would be you are a fool.

Last thing
"I've been no billed in a shooting episode 7 times by state and federal grand juries."

Now I realize it's Texas and ya'll are a little different there, but I'm friends with many law enforcement (local, state, and federal) and most of them have never had to use their weapon. Certainly not 7 times in one career. That says you are either working in Afganistan or Iraq, or perhaps you choose the weapon a little frequently. Human life is not cheap, no matter whose life it is.

Why the Denial?
Fitzgerald - Republican prosecutor hired by Bush

Walton - Judge appointed by Bush

But it must be a conspiracy by Democrats.

Good comedy, guys, keep it up.

Marc Rich
So who was Marc Rich's lawyer representing him, asking for the pardon?

None other than Scooter Libby himself.

The politicians are having the last laugh on all of us because they are all in on it.

Washington is nothing more than a stage for entertaining you folks.

And entertained you are.

It's public everywhere
Just look in Westlaw. And as for the story of the "liar" sign...sorry but that doesn't make sense. Grand Juries don't return verdicts; they either return an indictment or they return a no bill. So no woman left a grand jury after a "verdict" and was ordered to wear a sign. At least not in the way you are telling the story.

Robert
A federal badge huh. Cops can't ever be wrong, can they? I wonder exactly how many violent criminals have been found innocent thru such advancements as DNA technology that were tried, convicted, and sentenced by our legal system. Is there a better way? I don't know. Is ours perfect? Far from it. Have you ever personally collared someone, seen them convicted and sentenced believing yourself they were guilty and then found out you were wrong? Just curious.

Probably seen a lot of folks get off on technicalities and, it pisses you off huh.

Ted Poe
Ted Poe, the same Ted Poe who tried to allow a documentary team into jury deliberations on a death penalty case and was told by the Texas Supreme Court to drop that idea yesterday? That Ted Poe? Not impressed with a showboat type of judge. Follow the law and you're fine with me. Creating "shaming" sentences is not acceptable, unless the people, through the legislature passes those sort of laws. Then I'm all for it.

Also let me add that while I'm a staunch conservative, I have to say that much of Texas' criminal justice system is unfavorable to criminal defendants, to say the least. Or need I remind you of the Texas Supreme Court decision which says a person whose defense attorney sleeps throughout the trial is effectively represented and has no right to a new trial. That is a famous case which is on nearly every bar exam. I could go on but it's pointless...

Finally, let me congratulate you, based on your word, that you are one of the good law enforcement types. We sorely need more good ones.

Until . . .
someone can show me Libby's motive for lying, I will contend that it was a simple case of someone not recalling an insigificant conversation because it didn't amount to a hill of beans.

Please explain to me why Libby, who is such a competent lawyer and had such great legal representation, whould lie for no reason.

Then explain to me why this even took place when Nifong, er ah, Fitzgerald knew that the whole reason for his investigation was settled.

Can't walk away after spending so much of the tax-payer's money without somebody's scalp-in-hand can you?

Amazing.

I guess . . . .
. . . . this is why many in the public hold lawyers in such contempt. It used to be just scumbag ambulance chasers like John Edwards, but now we seem to have a whole new breed of out-of-control prosecutors - Ronnie Earle, Mike Nifong, Johnny Sutton, and now Patrick Fitzgerald.

You navel-gazers can't see the forest for the trees.

Professional training
"I have assisted in sending people to prison for many crimes"

And I have walked many people out the front of the court house when a member of law enforcement takes liberties with our constitution. I've represented many people, and nothing gives me more pleasure than helping the truly innocent get their lives back when some overzealous officer concocted a charge.

To balance the scales, I've also represented far more totally guilty people. I consider what I do for them as damage control, as well as guaranteeing their right to a fair trial.

Robert
"more professional training in the former then the latter. I have assisted in sending people to prison for many crimes including perjury. I use to carry a federal badge"

I've found that in my experience, those that wear the "badge" aren't nearly as well versed in the law as they like to think. If they were, we defense attorneys wouldn't have much to do, would we? :)

Robert's rules
First year law school stuff (1L as it's called to those of us who have attended): In a closing argument, you cannot argue facts not in evidence. The interns in my office know that little nugget. If opposing counsel makes an objection (and one that is breathing will), the judge is to instruct the jury that it is not to be considered, admonish the party doing it, and counsel them if it continues a mistrial is likely to occur. Apparently this occured numerous times in closing in this trial. Apparently this judge chose not to grant the mistrial. However, that is what appellate courts are for.

Of course, your response to that will be the appellate courts are "Bushbots" or whatever disparaging comments are envogue at the time.

Robert . . .
Maybe the problem is that your blind pursuit of legal technicalities has obstructed your sense of true justice.

Laughable...
All the GOP spends the eight years of the Clinton presidency whining and crying like little babies over every conceivable wrong he or his associates might have committed (out of their bitterness from being unable to defeated Clinton in an election.) Then, when Bush is elected to the White House, he promises a return to civility, as well as a return of integrity to the White House. Now instead of living up to their words, all they can do is point and say "Clinton did bad things too, so we shouldn't be responsible for anything we do." Return of integrity, my foot.

from Fred Thompson . . . .
Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald proceeded to make public statements and employ tactics that would have brought condemnation in any other setting. He moved heaven and earth for a year and a half in order to come up with some sort of “process” crime against a high-level Administration official -- so that he could try them in one of the most anti-Bush Administration places in America, Washington DC.
The best he could come up with was a man who was not well known to the public, but who was basically working two full-time jobs after 9/11 -- trying to prevent such a thing from happening again. The White House physician says that, “Mr. Libby worked himself to exhaustion day after day reviewing national intelligence estimates.” Of course, he had to make time for hours of testimony before Fitzgerald’s grand jury and Fitzgerald found inconsistencies. At trial, practically every government witness not only was inconsistent with other government witnesses, but was inconsistent with regard to their own prior testimony.
During his closing arguments, Fitzgerald did what has caused many a prosecutor to get a mistrial: He asked the jury to consider “facts” that had not been placed into evidence or proven in any way. It was so egregious it was even too much for the judge, who admonished him.
Mr. Libby was convicted of perjury and false statements. For sentencing, the federal probation office filed a statement that the applicable federal guidelines called for a sentence of from 15 to 21 months. He also identified several grounds for what is known in the law as a “downward departure” from that range. In this case, Mr. Libby had led an exemplary life, and had sacrificed in order to serve his country and will presumably lose his law license. In other words, under the law, the judge would have had ample reason for giving Mr. Libby less than 15 months, including probation.
Fitzgerald, seeing this probation report and reverting to form as someone without professional judgment or scruples when it comes to landing his prey, weighed in. Throughout the trial, Fitzgerald insisted that Valerie Plame’s status was irrelevant and that the defense could not use her status in any way. But now that it came time for sentencing, Fitzgerald insisted that her status be considered, and that Mr. Libby be treated as if he’d violated the law he’d never even been charged with.
Proving once again that Fitzgerald can get away with practically anything in Washington, the judge apparently accepted Fitzgerald’s argument, contrary to all notions of basic fairness. The judge rejected his own probation office’s recommendation, not only doubling the 15-month minimum to 30 months, but also fining Mr. Libby $250,000 and giving him 400 hours of public service. Apparently, the judge is going to make Mr. Libby start serving his sentence in the near future, before he can get his appeal heard.
Unfortunately, this is an example of what Washington is all about these days. All too often the intersection of politics, law and the media results in a lack of responsibility by practitioners in all three areas. Having all this crashing down on the head of one man and his family, in a time when national security leaks are published regularly on the front pages of the newspapers without consequence, will justifiably add to the cynicism and outrage on the part of all observers.
For the preamble to our Constitution, our founders stated explicitly the purposes for our Constitution. Listed even before providing for domestic tranquility or for the common defense was the establishment of justice. Official behavior, with regard to matters like the Scooter Libby case, are not what our framers had in mind. Now this excessive sentence, given by the Federal District Judge is just another in a long line of reasons why Mr. Libby should be pardoned.

If you know the law...
Apparently your wonderful prosecutor didn't then, did he Robert? After all, his job was to investigate the "leak" and take the appropriate action. He knew almost from the get-go where the "leak" was, but for some strange reason, he kept going...hmmmmm...wonder why?

And for you to think he's not a liberal, you are deluding only yourself. Look at his bio.

The only thing that annoys me more would be you saying Clinton's 10 million or so pardons, etc. (the cash he collected, not the number of them, but pretty close) were "different facts."

I'm assuming your pretty well versed in federal criminal law and constitutional law yourself then, Robert?

Sheesh...

What are you so bent about? What good comes from Lewis Libby sitting in jail for nearly 3 years for not remembering who told him about Plame, or who he told first? He was not even pardoned, he had his sentence commuted which means he is still liable for the financial penalty, and he is still a convicted felon. You libs got your pound of Bush Administration flesh..so let it go!

Besides, if what Libby did was perjury, what was it when Tim Russert got on the stand and gave testimony that was contradictory to his earlier statements? He was either lying under oath, or lying to the feds during their investigation...both of which are federal crimes. Since I know that much about the law, shouldn't fat @ss Russert be up on charges soon, for at least obstruction of justice?

And finally, I seriously wonder of your panties were in such a bunch when Slick Willie was passing out PARDONS like party favors to Marc Rich, ad to a group of home grown terrorists from Puerto Rico...just to get money and votes for Hillary's Senate campaign? Probably not, as you seem to be a true believer that the Clinton's ran "the most ethical administration in history"!

writes, "Mike...
you have become a toadie.

Can you imagine your Dad doing this?

I cant...he passed on pardoning NOrth and Poindexter...

You are carrying water for a bunch of thugs.

Robert"

Bravo, Bravo Bring up any available straw man. You conspiracy wackos can always string events together to form any cult you want. In reality, there is probably very little that is comparable between these events or, most others for that matter. Every situation is different. The players are different. The environment is different. The contributing players are different. Our justice system is designed to ferret out the truth but, both sides want to win. The prosecutor rarely gives the slightest thought to whether an indicted person is actually guilty of anything. Winning is everything.

Patrick Fitzgerald is no better than Nifong. When the justice system is so plainly hijacked in broad daylight to satisfy a lynch mob, the end result is all but assured. Many more will be nifonged in the future, I assure you.

The way you lap up the utter hypocrisy dished out by Ms. Clinton most assuredly makes you the toady.

And one more thing . . .
Don't even try to run that crap that Libby was convicted by a jury of his peers. Sack o' Crap liberal prosecutors brings a Republican to trial in one of the most lop-sided Democrat strong-holds in the country and repeatedly invokes the name of Dick Cheney to get the jury all fired up.

There's no shame when it comes to leftists. It's win at all costs.

By the way . . . .
If your argument is that Scooter Libby "lied" under oath, rather than simply not having a iron-clad memory, exactly what was his motive for "lying"?

It was already known by the prosecutor that neither Libby nor anyone else in the White House was the leaker. It was Richard Armitage, but no one seems to be going after him. Very interesting isn't it? It's almost as if the whole reason for the investigation what just a F-ing smoke screen for a White House witch-hunt and fishing expedition all rolled into one.

I'm not in love with the Republicans, but it's SH*T like this that will keep me from EVER voting for the leftist Democrats.

Stay tuned...
for further adventures of those high fallut'n Arkansas travellers, the 'Loot and Scoot' Clinton gang, featuring Ma 'I don't recall' Hillary and 'lick'm and dick'm' Bill as they blaze a trail of theft, fraud and corruption across America in a quest of the office that assures them of immunity from all crime. The famed duo, hero of all fellons, promises pardons to all, if the price is right. See who's money talks and who's bulllsh*t walks on this week's episode...

If you're a criminal, degenerate and/or just a plain scoundrel, you'll love the Clintons.

Are we surprised?
Because nitwits like the Clintons think they're smarter than the rest of us, this is the kind of B.S. they try to slide past us on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, there's a large segment of the population who are willing to swallow it with glee. It makes me sad to think how naive and gullible so many people are.

1 more thing
Tony Snow - way to go. It's about time the White House started FIGHTING BACK.

my 2 cents
Good piece. At a time like this people should be reminded of the incredible hypocrisy of the Clintons, and let's not forget that classic description:

They are immune to embarrassment
