Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The ferocious fight over the Obama budget exposes some of the deepest differences between liberals and conservatives, contrasting not only their goals for the country but their desires for themselves.

All human beings feel a drive for power, but leftists and right-wingers express that urge with opposing (and often irreconcilable) strategies. They employ very different means in pursuit of power in part because they seek distinctive ends: at the most basic level, liberals want enhanced control through political authority while conservatives crave greater sway through accumulation of personal wealth. Understanding the true nature of this distinction clarifies the most polarizing political disputes that currently divide the country.

The liberal preoccupation with governmental control characterizes every major initiative of the Obama administration. The reflexive response to the financial crisis is to blame it on insufficient regulation and to demand an instant expansion of bureaucratic authority to deal with the emergency. The left places its faith in governmental institutions, and even though most leftists will never personally involve themselves in politics or the bureaucracy, they support and trust those who do.

For instance, recent polling shows that big majorities of Americans want government to require more fuel efficient cars. Of course, the countless sincere citizens who demand such regulations could easily purchase high-mileage vehicles without waiting for some new federal policy, but the demand for sweeping regulations shows that many Americans trust bureaucrats more than they trust themselves.

Thoughtful liberals defend this deep-seated yen for government supervision by affirming that they feel no pressing need for Washington to regulate them, but they do want more rules and bureaucracy to rein in the destructive excesses of their greedy, irresponsible, selfish neighbors. In other words, leftists seek greatly enhanced power for those they consider enlightened and generous and broadminded—best exemplified, of course, by President Obama himself. They seek vastly increased funds for these wise, steady, philosopher-kings who guide the federal government, and sharply decreased money for the wealthiest, most productive private citizens (and, for that matter, for private charities). They believe that society will benefit greatly if progressive leaders define new goals in health care, energy, education and every other field, rather than relying on the often benighted impulses and preferences of the public at large. The great unwashed may enjoy “American Idol” and “Dancing with the Stars,” but if the feds pump enough taxpayer money into PBS, maybe the culture commissars can facilitate the appreciation of higher things. In view of the painfully high cost of health insurance, tens of millions of Americans choose not purchase it – though many of them clearly can afford it. In response, progressives want to force them to get government insurance whether they want it or not, and plan to bill them (and everybody else) with increased taxes. In short, liberals seek power and influence over their fellow citizens by means of a more energetic and intrusive government, with the belief that everyone will benefit from more supervision, regulation, and social workers to administer the new agenda of compassion.

While liberals seek to advance their values and priorities with more bureaucracy and federal spending, most conservatives yearn for a different sort of power: the control and privilege and security that comes from the accumulation of personal wealth. Right-wingers want above all to take care of themselves and the people closest to them – family, co-workers, friends, and fellow members of churches or other affinity groups. Conservatives generally feel less concerned about the welfare of strangers than they do about the fate of those who are close at hand, though they understand that personal success also brings benefits for the whole society. A flourishing business creates new jobs, and those workers can use their paychecks to stimulate the entire economy. Conservatives distrust bailouts, stimulus packages, welfare programs and redistribution of wealth because such initiatives reward the sort of behavior that right-wingers would never want to encourage personally.

The power that conservatives most fervently desire involves self-sufficiency: the ability to control your own circumstances and your future, without depending on government or charity. Accumulating wealth – or at least putting together some modest savings – insures that you’ll be well-treated more effectively than any governmental regulations or guarantees.

The contrast between the liberal and conservative pursuit of power gives the left two big advantages in politics, while providing the right with an even more substantial edge in terms of personal happiness.

In politics, the liberal focus on influencing government and controlling the status of other people allows the left to claim the mantle of superior compassion. Because leftists talk more about the welfare of strangers, they portray themselves as more idealistic and more concerned with humanity at large. By contrast, the conservative emphasis on private institutions – businesses, families, churches – is often derided as selfish and insular.

The left enjoys a second built-in political advantage: because of its emphasis on the importance of public life and governmental activism, the most ambitious and gifted people in the progressive community will often choose politics as a higher calling. Conservatives, with their preoccupation with the private sector, will much more likely choose to emphasize building families, businesses or communities rather than constructing electoral careers.

This means that those observers who perceive superior political ability on the liberal side of the spectrum are probably correct. Moreover, it’s a structural imbalance, and not a temporary aberration – a reflection of the fact that the left sees government as a source of enlightenment and accomplishment, while the right views government as a locus of corruption and potential tyranny. It’s not surprising that those who look on bureaucracy and political power most favorably will choose disproportionately to involve themselves in those pursuits.

Conservatives, meanwhile, enjoy a mirror-image structural advantage when it comes to personal happiness. It is obviously much easier to control your own circumstances than to secure the welfare of society at large. It’s inherently more possible and more satisfying to influence yourself and your intimates than to impact millions upon millions of utter strangers.

In other words, it’s easier to change yourself than to change the world. It’s therefore only logical that conservatives would report far higher levels of contentment and personal happiness than liberals, according to Syracuse University’s Arthur Brooks (author of “Gross National Happiness”), and everyone else who’s studied the subject.

Both conservatives and liberals pursue power, but the left wants to influence other people and society at large while right-wingers want enhanced control over their personal circumstances. That contrast may give liberals the edge in many political scraps, but conservatives will still have a better and more satisfying time in the process.

Partisan Argument - Smoke n Mirrors
The American system of Government has failed. Elected officials from both parties have been growing the Federal Gov't for decades.

Before you start going after the liberals Medved you should start cleaning up your own house. Conservative Republicans came to power in 1980 and have been growing Government, not shrinking it. Deregulation to the point of allowing Corp's like Fanny & Freddy to write more bad paper than their balance sheets could handle and take their bonuses on it.

Both sides pay lip service to the needs of the people, then do sameolesame. A corrupt and failed Government serving the needs of a few at the expense of the rest of us.

If you want to bring Conservativism back I suggest you find some actual Conservatives who believe the 535 elected seats in DC are for public servants.

The system is broken, and the conservatives were just as corrupt as the liberals. The pendulum has swung back to the left, and Conservatives have noone to blame but themselves. And we (the people) are picking up the tab.

AllLibsMustPerish?
Hey buddy, take a deep breath.

Whatever the solution is, we have to work together to find it. I don't know what kind of liberals you've been talking with, but most of us are nice down to earth folks with families and jobs.

Please do the world a favor - keep up the intellectual honesty regarding your conservative opinion, but relax and enjoy yourself while you're on earth doing it!

This column is a joke
Michael, how on earth can you write these words after the last eight years?!! The magnitude of your intellectual dishonesty is staggering. Conservatives hate bailouts and welfare? Right, that's why the Bush administration asked for $700,000,000,000 for Wall Street. Conservatives are more concerned with helping those close to them? Right, that's why thousands of American soldiers have died or been maimed for life "liberating" the Iraqi people while America's poor are losing their homes and going without food and medicine. Your entire movement is a joke. Perhaps if you stopped sucking yourself off for two seconds and cleared your ideology-addled mind, you'd realize that.

The real difference?
The real difference between a conservative and a lib? Conservatives need libs for nothing, while libs cease to exist without access to conservative's money. Period, end of story.

J.R. from Ill.
That's humorous...what you said about treating each other with respect!! Are you talking about left-wing bloggers...liberals and Hollywood?? Is that the kind of respect that should be generated so that we can all work for America? Now that's a really funny proposition!! Huh?

hmmm
Kirk said power is only abused when govt has it, wow!,
'When you amass your own wealth, and power, you don't hold it over the whole country. And please don't give me that crap about the rich banding together. That was a lie then and now.'

riiiight, cuz there are not a select # people/families who have weilded ridiculously disproportionate amounts of power based on the accumulation of tremendous wealth....hah, so no more talk about George Soros from the right then yea?

I'll take John's view please...

Let;s be clear
Maintaining a fractious, unpatriotic divide between left and right is what puts food on the table for opportunists like Medved, Glenn Beck, Hannity,Coulter, etc. If Americans start treating each other with respect, and actually begin listening to each other to work for America's benefit, they will be out of work.

Of course, Limbaugh has more money than God - he could never be vicious again and still live like Croesus.

Icedog
Due process is a constitutional right - why do conservatives scoff at it, along with Bush, but are outraged when gun ownership is threatened?

Are the constitutional amendments only for right wing fringies?

I finally reqalized G W Bush was not a free market guy when he tried to put tariffs on imported steel. It didn't help the steel industry because it ended up killing their customers or encouraging them to switch from steel to other materials. In months or less, the damage of that little protectionist piece of crap was clearly evident and had to be rescinded. It reminds me of the luxury tax on yachts and planes. Only the employees of the companies that produced yachts and planes felt any impact and it was all negative. Most government actions, especially the knee-jerk ones and most especially the ones that try to place punitive taxes or regulations on the most productive (which are frequently the most clever or able to hire the most clever agents)lead to negative unintended consequences.

oracle1...
Your heart is in the right place... it feelings over logic, however. I guess that does make you a liberal.

It is true that the wealthy will always be able to afford gas guzzlers. Look who flies around in private jets... the wealthy, of course.
Whether oil is a finite resource or not, there are alternatives. And it is the price of those alternatives that determines everything. If and when we begin to run out of oil, it will become more expensive to use gasoline (and diesel) making alternatives relatively more attractive. So long before we run out of gasoline, we will mostly be driving electric cars or reverting back to horses, or using alcohol as fuel. We will never run out of oil in the sense that it will become prohibitively expense before it is all gone.

As for the Chinese... Suppose every car in the US could be replaced with a car that saves 10 miles per gallon. How much gas is that going to leave in the market for a billion Chinese drivers. And don't forget to recognize that as mileage improves, it becomes more economical to drive more miles. So increasing mpg does not guarantee we will save any oil. A combination of higher prices and more fuel efficient cars will. One wonders if the auto makers are focused on innovating right now or on simply staying afloat and meeting the govt stipulations for their bailouts. Autos are a durable good anyway and it takes time to turn over the fleet with newer cars. I suspect there will be gas guzzlers out there for a while.

Bonuses
According to the Wall St. Journal, it appears that 9.1 million dollars in bonuses were paid to Hill staffers in the last quarter of 2008. But they decry the bonuses to AIG and other exec. Do I see a double standard? Yes, but libs and socialists always have a way to show their true colors.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Call me a lib on this issue... oil is a finite resource... some with $ will NEVER drive fuel-efficient cars if they have a choice. Note the popularity of monster SUV's despite often wretched gas mileage... I see people of modest means driving such gas hogs (Jeep Grand Cherokee V8) that might get only 14 mpg downhill with a tail wind... in contrast, my daughter's Highlander SUV gets about 25 mpg overall (better in city driving/stop 'n go).

I do NOT agree with a heavy usage tax on gas (which would simply be squandered by guvments), but EVERYONE benefits from better fuel efficiency.

Speculators caused the last gas price spike, but there are 1 billion Chinese who aspire to own cars-- we need as much fuel efficiency as possible-- as we move toward electric.

excellent point

"It's very hard to go out and sell conservatism, by which I mean getting government out of people's lives, when conservatives vote for all kinds of laws that take money from one family and give it to another."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The thing I most fault Dubya for is that he and the other RINOS/CINOS spent $ like born-again Crats! He embraced the boondoggle Rx Care for Seniors, 90% of whom had no semblance of a need for further guvment intrusion. The total tab on that ripoff will be HORRENDOUS.

Worse still, he willfully embraced ILLEGALS for his miscreant employer business cronies and drank the stupid brew by imagining that conservatives could garner some of their votes due to supposed "conservative socïal values."

What, pray tell, is conservative about penchants toward crime, identity and tax fraud, gangs, social service decimation, barrio blight, dropouts, illegitimacies, and other pandemic social pathologies?!

liberals' stratagem for amnesty

Watch the Chosen One/the Glowbama press for Scamnesty shortly using the hackneyed, disingenuous line, "bringing people out of the shadows," partly under the guise of getting ILLEGALS to help fight drug cartels-- that is like treating the heart patient with an injection of cancer cells so he won't die of heart failure!

As a dedicated soldier in the fight to save America from myopic, beleaguered acceptance of the ILLEGAL invasion, I surely appreciate the frustration of the majority of Americans (70%+) with quisling politicians.

The left KNOWS that ILLEGALS will vote 95% for big entitlement guvment, which explains why the ObaMessiah has stopped construction of the border fence, which was well under way, and working.

HOWEVER, the fight is NOT lost!!!
We stopped Kennedy-McCain Scamnesty, then killed the disingenuous "Dream Act," a liberal gambit to give ILLEGALS a free community college education and thence a path to citizenship, and blue state N.Y. stanched the governor Spitzer's scheme to give ILLEGALS licenses, which 77% of Americans oppose per Rasmussen (because licenses are a step toward voting and scamnesty).

Join the fight, Middle America to save YOUR COUNTRY-- while we still have a little time!!!!!!!!

The BEST group to assist you is Numbers USA... several senators agreed that they were the group most responsible for stanching Kennedy-McCain Scamnesty:

http://www.numbersusa.com/content/

They have targeted e-mails and messages for Congress, OR you can contact Congress directly at the official sites right here:

http://www.congressmerge.com/

BOOKMARK it, and rattle those cages in Congress often! Save YOUR country before it is too late! The left is resurrecting the Dream Act -- we need to kill it AGAIN.

Blue dog Çrats (e.g., Heath Shuler-- who sponsors the desirable SAVE Act) are already starting to resist the ObaMessiah and the hard left-- hope is NOT lost, BUT it WILL require dedication from Middle America!

America, the Only Great Free Nation!
Good article, Michael, but don't let the liberals fool you for one minute. The ultimate goal is to nationalize the banking system and the country by giving up our financial sovereignty and keeping the borders open and giving up our country's sovereignty to those who meet in secret places that aren't so secret anymore and who believe that they must control the world and get rid of those they don't favor because of race, ethnicity, economics, religion, health, politial beliefs, or are non-conformists to their perfect one world order that can come about unless the world is in disorder by manipulating the money and the gold so that people are grateful for the crumbs once they're made homeless and penniless because of hyperinflation in the next couple of years.

NYET!
Guess what folks! Uncle Sam ONLY SEES GREEN.

I am not a Republican nor Democrat. I am a Constitutionalist Independent and I KNOW that Government spending is insupportable. If the Government seized all income, we would still be in the RED.

Taxes will not pay down our debts, which have been accumulating since the 1930s.

Blacks, pray tell, how our balance sheet will turn BLACK?

Hispanics, pray tell, how will our balance sheet will turn negro?

Asians, pray tell, how our balance sheet will turn BLACK? (Sorry to say, but the slang word for Black is Gay)

For the Frenchies (like me), the word is noir.

Now, ONLY The REAL "aliens" and Government see GREEN.

Let's just say NYET!

And, please read the Constitution and everything by Sheldon Richman.

WP: 82% of GDP in 10 Years!!!

Before reading, keep in mind that the EU average for its countries' with anemic growth is 47% of GDP...

“In the midst of this bonfire of inanities, President Obama is pressing ahead with a $3.6 trillion budget, predicated on utterly unrealistic economic growth, even as the Congressional Budget Office is now projecting that this year’s deficit will soar past $1.8 trillion, 13 percent of the US economy. This would amount, as the Washington Post reports, to ‘the deepest well of red ink since the end of World War II.’ According to the Post, the CBO is warning, ominously, that the result of this kind of borrowing and spending could lead to an exponentially expanding national debt that would ‘exceed 82 percent of the overall economy by 2019.’”

President Obama came to office proclaiming that he aims to solve problems, not hand them on to our children. Most presidents say that sort of thing. But now we are in very dire straits, and that being the case, he will be held to account. It’s your legacy, sir, and let’s not hear any more about ‘inheriting the crisis.’ You asked for the job. Meanwhile, let us hope that his talent for mastering a sérieux financial crisis are not on a level with the Special Olympians of Wall Street, and Congress.”

11) What is the minimum expected rate of inflation once recovery begins?

At the very minimum, inflation will be 5-8% when recovery begins, which will act as a disincentive for employers to expand and hire more workers. It will make feeding one's family, buying a car, paying tuition, and surviving cost-prohibitive in an evironment where the overall cost-of-living is dramatically higher than it has been.

12) Accordinging to the Washington Post and if Obama's budget passes, the Government will spend 82% of our GDP by 2019, which makes Zimbabwe look sane.

13) You will have to work 299.3 days a year in order to pay Uncle Sam.

14) Socialism always FAILS because the Government runs out of everyone's money, except for the funds of Soros, who made over $1bn by shorting the market, and the rest of the "shorters".

15) We all DIE.

Current day Zimbabwe where Mugabe seized all of the assets of the plantation owners to spread the wealth. Devalued Zimbabwe's once stron currency and destroyed the former thriving economy.

Liberal vs. What?
The liberals certainly want to try to control us to require what ever it is those in power think is the "right thing to do."

But the (social) conservatives also have their own rather serious set of forced behaviors that they want all to force on the population:

Prayer in schools

Other mixing of church/religion with the public sphere (10 commandments, Christmas displays, etc.)

Making abortion illegal even for those who do not share their particular line of thinking.

Decisions on science and technology based on religious principles rather than on secular grounds -- stem cell research might bring great benefit to all of us -- but a narrow religious decision restricted that research. This is not to say that there are not ethical considerations, but there was little balance in Bush's decision.

So-called "compassionate" conservatism apparently raises Federal budgets as fast as previous liberals administrations (Obama, of course puts all previous administrations to shame when it comes to spending beyond all reason.)

Ah, but that's different, you say? Well, how is it different? I simply want to be left alone to do whatever it is that liberty allows without interference from the Government. Period.

I want the government to be as small as possible while providing secure borders (both Republicans and Democrats have failed on that point, though for different reasons), military security, and providing those few services and regulations necessary to keep the economic playing field fair to all participants.

I have "held my nose" and voted for Republican candidates for nearly all offices (on my ballot) for the past 25 or more years. I want the Democrats to stay out of my wallet -- and I want the Republicans to stay out of my bedroom and doctor's office.

The Problem with the article
is that it did not mention that, even though liberals claim to be compassionate, it is the conservative members of society who contribute the most and the largest percentage of their wealth to charity. Liberals only move their mouth, conservatives reach for their wallet.
All one has to do is research the charitable giving of Bush and Chaney conpared to that of Obama and Biden. The contrast is amazing.

Role Reversal
What is funny to me is how the first definitions of liberalism and conservatism have 180 degree flip-flopped. Originally, with the enlightenment philosophes, liberals were for small government, trying to get the Man (King) off their back, taxes, censorship, etc. Adam Smith, 'founder' of capitalism, would have been classified a liberal Conservatives were the royalists who were for the paternalistic (as opposed to now, maternalistic) government, and were against capitalism because it uplifted the nouveau riche over the landed nobility.

Liberals only became pro-big government when they grabbed the reins, a la french revolution; that turned out well.

Also, even this conservative article by Medved uses the word 'government' as virtually a synonym for 'federal government;' that's libthink. We conservatives should emphasize at every chance lower forms of government as being more legitimate, more natural, more grassroots, more organic, remembering original federalist constitution, with severely limited powers.

Liberals 'think globally,' but despise individual men and women, especially those that live between California and New York.

Yeah, I keep a firm grip on my wallet when the Liberals are around.

Getting better benefits and more personal freedoms is the aim of most liberals. Conservative want to keep the goodies they now have. Liberals want free national healthcare and conservatives want to pay their healthcare insurance with the help of less taxes. They both need and respect a powerful government for different reasons. Conservatives are now controlling the game and do not want liberals to challenge their supremacy. But the new administration will change the rules of the game and give all workers an equal opportunity to get a slice of the American pie.

You see folks what I mean when I talk about how the DemwitOCrap Party has trained their dancing chickens (a metaphor from "Pure Country") to believe they actually have the power to vote themselves a big old slice of largess....

I and others were yelling at the top of our lungs about how the DemwitOCrap Party was buying the votes of nincompoops like Melvin here.

"The important thing is what Medved mentions, but declines to fully address. People of all persuasions seek power, and power, as we know, corrupts. All the rest is just self serving twaddle."

Agreed, but then if whatever your persuasion is, and you use it to seek power - you automatically become liberal. Because you do not trust individual freedoms, and therefore use the governement to "change" to your personal idea of GOOD. Example, Facism and true Christianity are at odds with each other, Because Christianity requires free-will, individual choice. But False Christianity becomes a liberal fascistic force if used improperly like say during the inquisition.

Weak job Medved
Come on Medved. I expect more from you. This is incredibly lazy and intellectually dishonest writing.

It's almost as if Prager wrote it.

Every American has the opportunity to EARN their slice of the American dream pie. It is not the job of government to take away from those who have earned their pie and give it to those who have not.

That reminds me of an old joke where a conservative and a liberal are walking together in lower Manhattan and pass by a homeless man. The conservative goes over to the homeless man and says to him, "Come down to my office tomorrow morning and I'll give you a job."

The liberal then reaches into the conservative's pocket, takes 50 dollars and gives it to the homeless man.

Conservatives
could prevail in this ideological war if they practiced what they preached. (I am a conservative Republican.) It's very hard to go out and sell conservatism, by which I mean getting government out of people's lives, when conservatives vote for all kinds of laws that take money from one family and give it to another.
...

===========================
Stilla, I pull a modified version of this one out when it seems applicable...

The folks you point to are in fact not conservatives. They are in fact what I identify as, hyphenated-Conservatives.

G.W. Bush for example hyphenated his conservatism with the word, "compassionate-".

Others hyphenate their conservatism with things like "fiscal-", "social-", "political-" or "religious-".

And, I'm not saying there are no fiscal-conservatives, or social-conservatives.

However what I do suggest...

If someone feels a need to hyphenate their conservatism, maybe they want to carefully think about whether they truly are a conservative.

For I suspect in most cases they'll discover themselves to be a liberal with a conservative leanings or two. But, they remain libturds.

Judge Robert Bork once titled a book, "Slouching toward Gomorrah"...

It seems an excellent description of folks who view themselves as conservatives, yet qualify their position by donning a hyphen with their conservatism.

IOW out of the closet libturds openly run toward Gomorra with no apology. While the hyphenated-conservative chose to slouch toward Gomorra at a somewhat slower pace.

Conservatives
could prevail in this ideological war if they practiced what they preached. (I am a conservative Republican.) It's very hard to go out and sell conservatism, by which I mean getting government out of people's lives, when conservatives vote for all kinds of laws that take money from one family and give it to another. Money for my neighbor's son to go to college because his parents traded up to a huge house just before the kids were ready to go to college. Money for a senior citizen to get prescription drugs, taken from his neighbor who is just starting his family. Too many people are on the dole in one way or another, and conservatives participated in this development. I do hope they fold their arms over their chests and say NO to all of the liberals' reckless spending. Past complicity aside, conservatives can now redeem themselves and let the libs OWN this disastrous budget and bailout fiasco. We'll still be screwed, but at least we will be able to hold our heads up and have some pride in our conservative representatives.

It's simple, Bill.
Liberals define compassion as giving away lot's of someone elses money.

Oh, and Lon? Bush is to the left of JFK. If Bush is conservative, JFK was Ghengis Khan.

John
you are right all men seek power. The diffrence is that when power is in the gov. it is very dangerous, as it affects the whole country. When you amass your own wealth, and power, you don't hold it over the whole country. And please don't give me that crap about the rich banding together. That was a lie then and now.

Look, this guy needs to understand that there are principals in the Const. that are inalienable-they are GIVEN BY THE CREATOR, and that are the basic laws that these clowns in Wash. have forgotten to up hold, period!!! They have stopped tring to protect these rights and all they seem to care about is making their millions and getting out, much like the senate in the Roman Empire!!!

Conservatives vs. Liberals
An even simplier explaination.

Liberal - Hate their selfish Mother
Conservative - Blessed with a responsible, loving Mother

Think about it.

It Is A Simple Issue
It is a simple issue to me. It boils down to that basic question, do you want to be taken care of, or do you want to take care of yourself? Should government take care of you, or should government help you take care of yourself. Whatever your answer is to these two basic questions, determines which politcal party you support.

Icedog
I see that Lon (Loon?) didn't respond to you challenge in naming U.S. citizens locked up without due process. Figures. Like most liberals, the accusation and rhetoric bely any facts.

Who Really Cares?
One of the authors Mr. Medved quotes, Arthur Brooks, demonstrated in his book, Who Really Cares, that religious conservatives are much more generous in terms of what they give to charity than are liberals, even when money given to churches is taken out of the equation. An atheist professor of psychology who has done a lot of research in the area, Jonathan Haidt, has noted that it is so well established in terms of research that conservative Christians give way more money to charity than do liberals (again even when money given to churches is taken out of the equation) that any comments made otherwise demonstrate a type of religious prejudice. I find it interesting that liberals continue to market themselves as the compassionate group, when that is clearly not the case. On the other hand, I know many conservatives who are not all about building personal wealth but who simply recognize the fact that the larger the govenment becomes, the less freedom people will have. The fact that the government has grown under some Republicans, only points out that being a Republican is not the same as being a conservative.

Old Communist Joke
This is a perfect American corollary to the old Soviet joke:

Capitalism is a system where man exloits man. Under Communism, it's just the opposite.

The important thing is what Medved mentions, but declines to fully address. People of all persuasions seek power, and power, as we know, corrupts. All the rest is just self serving twaddle.

Conservatives vs. Liberals
...
================
Dang Ken, in your opening paragraph or two I truly thought you had it...

You did an excellent job explaining the significant difference between a real American conservative and your garden variety Libertarian, JohnBirch'r, or Pauliac type character.

But, you went completely limp as you attempted to define a fascist liberal.

Finally you offer this way over simplified fuzzy vision..."government=good" or "government=bad".

If you like it simple, how about...

government bounded by Constitution = good, or government using said Constitution to wipe smelly collective butt with = bad.

Conservatives vs. Liberals
The easiest way to explain it is the old definition of a liberal: "A liberal is someone who believes that everyone is entitled to an opinion as long as it agrees with him." This has especially been the case since 2000. It seems that ever since the election of 2000 the li/dems have never forgiven conservatives/republicans for that loss and the subsequent 8 years. As such they only believe that the complete capitulation of opposing ideas is the only way to make up for that supposed sin of America. It is the reason that they will not consider any sort of bipartisan solution. All this despite the fact that they stonewalled so much during the last 8 years that so much more could have been accomplished. But then they might not be able to complain about the situation because they would have to acknowledge their part in causing the problems we are in right now.

Michael
I read your entire article and was very disappointed by the word "Yen". Trying to cast Liberals as "Chinese Equivalences",is truly sad. I am afraid the last election was an "Indictment" of Conservatism and it did not go well, as you know. I would suppose "Hard Working","Brilliant Business People" vote. If they do, then it begs the question; Why are their fewer of them, than the Liberals? Historically, this Capitalist Economy has produced more opportunity for the "Few", than for the "Many". The Chinese are, at this very minute, using the failures of our Capitalism, to indoctrinate a new generation. You and those like you, might want to get on that. My money is on the "Chinese"... They don't "Whine"!

Conservatives vs. Liberals
Yes, conservatives place an emphasis on individuals and personal responsbility, and that is not altogether bad. But of course, not every world problem can be solved through personal responsibilty. Even conservatives recognize that government -- ond ONLY government -- can resolve certain issues.

Take the so-called "war on terrorism". Everyone --
conservatives and liberals -- recognize that you're not going to thwart threats to America simply by everyone engaging in "personal responsibility". You NEED an army; you NEED a diplomatic corps. In short, you NEED a government. While people may disagree on the overall strategy, no reasonable person disputes that government is necessary to deal with that particular issue.

Liberals differ from conservatives in the sense that they believe government can be the solution to other problems as well. And that's the only real difference between conservatives and liberals -- the extent to which they believe government can make this a better country.

Liberals truly believe that the government is "of the people and by the people" (as well as "for the people"). In other words, liberals truly belirve that WE are the government. Conservatives view the government as something outside themselves, like an alien virus or something. Personally, I think the liberal viewpoint is more realistic. Which isn't to say that government is ALWAYS the right solution for EVERY problem facing society. But it CAN BE the right solution for MANY of societal ills. All we have to do is want it to be.

It's too simplistic to say "government=good" or "government=bad". We need to change the dialogue so that we all recognize that "good government=good" and "bad government=bad". And the role of government is to know when it can and should be a force for positive social change, and when it should just get the hell out of the way.

Anglers Reward
You may think I’m crazy, but the most obvious manifestation of the Generation Gap I recall was in cartoons. OVERNIGHT cartoons went from talking animals blowing each other up to 4 dopers and a dog exposing businessmen as crooks. Like dopers ever think of ANYTHING BUT DOPE!

OTOH, check out some video from CPAC. The crowd was so young that you would sell more razor blades at the NOW convention than you would at CPAC. Conservatism is ALIVEE AND WELL!

BTW, where do you go fishing in Ohio?

TH Conservatives
Michael Medved KNOWS of what he speaks. Many TH Conservatives have opined that they would like a window into how the Liberal Mindset works. I HIGHLY recommend Michael Medved’s book “Right Turns”. While it is true that Michael Medved is not as conservative as some of us would like, the FACT IS that he went from being an SF Liberal to being a member of Ronald Reagan’s Debate Prep Team in 1980. AGAIN I SAY, put aside any philosophical differences you have with Michael Medved and READ THIS BOOK!

GENERATION GAP
The children of the generations from the foundation of our Country up until The Age of Aquarius honored and respected their parents who were their authority and teachers. The children of these generations put their parents and their parents values and principles before themselves and self gratification.
Then came the 60's, the flower children who banded together rejecting the values and principles of their parents and puting their wants and desires above all. Now these Age of Aquarius youth are the teachers of our Country's children and running our Country's government. They have NO values or principles based in Truth, Honesty, Integrity or the Rule of Law. They sold their souls as youth to their wants and desires and now are sated only by power and money.
The future of our Nation and our children of generations to come rests on the 'HOPE' that the majority of Americans realize WHAT WAS was RIGHT and GOOD and what NOW IS is WRONG and FATAL. With that realization 'HOPE' will become a fight to 'CHANGE' what NOW IS back to WHAT WAS.
We need to pray that our Military Leaders were not flower children of the Age of Aquarius as well and will stand up and FIGHT for our Country here at HOME.

Moral Equivalence?
Essentially, Medved's overlong column says the following:

All men desire power. Conservatives choose power over local issues, liberals choose power over national issues. In short, they both choose power over others.

The truth is that liberals and conservatives agree that people are incapable of living by their own judgment. They only differ over which issues must be solved by forcing people to do the "right" thing.

This is because slavery is mankind's true inheritance. It is the oldest human institution and mankind's fondest tradition. This is not because people seek power, it is because people seek security and a life free of thought and decisions.

Historically, slaves have vastly outnumbered masters, yet slave revolts are few and far between. This is because it is the slaves who want their slavery even more than their masters do. Knowing that they are incompetent to live their own lives they accept any master who promises to lead them.

Look at the titles of despots:

Mussolini - Il Duce (the leader)
Hiter - Der Fuehrer (the leader)
Castro - Maximum Leader
Kim Jong Ill - Dear Leader

And what is it that every politician promises? "Leadership"!!!

We have seen the failure of freedom because mankind is not fit for freedom. Perhaps in 50,000 years humans will evolve into something that craves the liberty that men so enthusiastically reject today.

The American Founders showed us a vision of that future, and even attempted to make that future real before its time. But their vision faded and failed because like the scorpion that stung the turtle, it is in mankind's nature to be a slave.

John, I suspect only for a short time
"... China is a power now because they have moved to economic capitalism) that makes me wonder why liberals stick to a more socialist dogma. ..."

I suggest the reason our current crop of libs are adhering to the current semi-"socialist dogma" can be found in the words of folks such as Alexis de Tocqueville in the mid-19th century as he explained how this new US government would survive, just as other similar societies did, until the people are taught that they have the power to vote themselves largess.

I suggest we have watched the DemwitOCrap Party only too happy to provide largess in exchange for votes, at least until they have all the power they need.

Hey Michael,
Your last sentence may not stand up on its merits. If liberals do, indeed change enough laws to affect conservative's lives, then I can't see how they will have a satisfying time getting taxed at 40% or higher; having their investments drained; and getting told that they have to fund illegal aliens' health care, education, and housing.

Thank you
Mr. Medved, thank you for such a clear eyed view of the differences between liberals and conservatives. I have fallen into the trap of assuming that liberals were either intellectually challenged or evil in their desire to control others, but your explanation of the differences has provided a vision in which both sides are simply trying to do what is in the best interest of society in general.

The differences between the two, in my mind, is that we have object evidence that capitalism (more conservative in nature) leads to greater wealth, though inequitably spread, while socialism (liberal in nature) leads to a more equitable spread of lesser wealth. Historically it is easy to see which societies are more successful and which eventually fall in upon themselves. It is the ignorance of these historical references (just look at Hongkong versus China 20 years ago - China is a power now because they have moved to economic capitalism) that makes me wonder why liberals stick to a more socialist dogma.

Of course what can you say about folks who believe in anthropomorphic global warming?

The real power

Michael’s essay explains many of the core differences of our political ideologies. Both sides are clearly driven by the pursuit of power but victory today goes to those who win the definitions war, namely the definition of justice. This is more insidious than a pursuit of power. Both sides claim their pursuits are just. Liberals however have convinced countless millions that their version of justice comes with an amoral agenda. Not immoral, simply one that believes their definition is neither moral nor immoral. Of course they never fail to condemn their opposition telling us how wrong and unjust Conservatives are.

Their reasoning is based on subjective value preferences yet they’ve convinced the masses that these preferences are objective and “enlightened.” This is not only hypocritical at the outset but it’s resulted in an irreconcilable incoherence, as well as civil discord, in the public square of debate. Much worse they’ve captured the imagination of a majority with these kinds of definitions, the consequences for which remain the greatest challenge of any and all social change.

It's no wonder they have no clue!!
Michael, I must scold you, just as I have many other conservatives on this board...

Your article was okay in showing some of the most easily recognized differences in progressive fascist and real American conservatives, but it did little more than propagate the fuzzyness.

Your title was Conservatives vs. Liberals...

Which to me declares your plans to reveal the in-depth differences...

For example, an explanation of the ultimate goals of the fascist progressive libturds to destroy this nation as built. To leave it completely CHANGED from the America most of us grew up in.

Plus, an explantion of how the goal of all real American conservatives are to preserve the nation as built, along with her existing traditions and boundaries.

Jeffrey
What exactly is selfish about realizng that changing yourself is more important than attempting to save the world? If I am a blight on my community, or a drain on its economy, all my "save the world" self-righteousness is wasted. How am I going to help anyone else if I can't even help my own condition?

But your post illustrates something about liberals that always comes to the fore. In spite of all the self serving platitudes libs spew, and in spite of all of the self righteous goodness they like to portray, they are usually at heart venal little busy bodies, who spend more time trying to condemn others and their actions, than they do actually helping anyone.

The dumbing down of America
"...but the demand for sweeping regulations shows that many Americans trust bureaucrats more than they trust themselves."

==============================
And, the DemwitOCrap Party has worked hard over the past 40 years dumbing down and hyphenating-Americans in order to accomplish this.

Conservatives and Liberals
Conservatives rely more on personal responsibility for ones actions. Generally, they don't have their hands out begging for welfare in the form of "free" taxpayer dollars. What really scares me here in Texas, are the unrelenting attempts by socialist organizations like the unions, ACORN and the ACLU, the Urban League, and the various anti-American, anti-constitutional organizations like LULAC to destroy the United States and replace its citizens with illegal aliens who are very happy to suck up all the welfare they can. Our conservative politicians are not working hard enough to fight against this horror because they are so connected to "pork" from bidness and agriculture, both of which want cheap employees at any price.

Let us not forget this too:
Liberals consider themselves enlightened, erudite, sophisticated and nuanced. They look upon the masses as 'unwashed' heathens, incapable of managing their lives. As Thomas Sowell's book, "The Annointed" demonstrates, liberals need to rule our lives, while exempting themselves from the same laws.

Conservatives elevate the individual, entrusting each person with the right, the power and the satisfaction of managing their own lives. It is the same, timeless principle that made America so successful and the envy of the world.

Young People, Srand Up!
My two year old grandaughter will be affecred all her life by Obama's fantasy of hope.

This Obama/Liberal fantasy will be on the heads of the current 20 something generation and all those that are born today.

Stand up and say no to Socialism.

Liberalism Leads to Fascism
This analysis leads inevitably to the conclusion that liberals are fascistic and it's only a matter of time before their belief in, and support of, state power leads to a fascist state. There is no difference between World War II's Germany and Japan and current "liberal" states. It's only a matter of time. They started out giving the stamp of approval to abortion. Next is euthanasia. The logic of this outcome is inevitable given the premises of the so-called "liberal" governments.

Lon
I'm calling your bluff....please list all the "American citizens" that "President Bush" simply "declared as enemy combatents (sic) and then detain[ed] with no hint of due process."

Lon
you are obviously educated. To bad you don't have the intelligence to use it.

Jose
Excellent job articulating the differences in the 2 parties, Michael. You're always that way. I have a question, At what point does Obama stop becoming "liberal" and become something else? Like socialist or Czar or King? I'm not being funny either? It's a serious question. When a president can start forcing CEO's out of their respective positions then I think we have a problem worse then liberalism.

Nutty
"In other words, it’s easier to change yourself than to change the world."

It's also more selfish.

"It’s therefore only logical that conservatives would report far higher levels of contentment and personal happiness than liberals."

That's not what Brooks' book says. He reported that conservatives were moderately happier than liberals and he admits (after a colleague called him on it) that he massaged his data to make that point (and sell books).

some right some wrong
It is probably true that the fact that liberals believe that government can be part of the solution leads them to run the government better when they are in power. If you think that government is part of the problem, it makes sense to appoint someone with no experience in disaster management to be head of FEMA, or to pick accountants to send to Iraq based on their views of abortion.

On the otherhand, we are coming out of a period in which a conservative president just declared his belief in a unitary presidency that allows him to declare US citizens to be enemy combatents and then to detain him with no hint of due process on that basis. So it seems pretty silly to hear that conservatives don't have faith in government. These are people who think that the government can be trusted to only execute innocent people.

Trust in government doesn't seem to be the real issue. It seems to be more what each side considers important.

Not sure of the second advantage
Michael,

I'm not sure that the left actually has that much of an advantage when it comes to who among them goes into politics and government. While it is true that it does attract the brightest and best of liberals into government, it also attracts many of the lesser liberals as well. Among the conservatives that enter the field, the numbers are fewer, and thus they tend to obtain more experience.
