Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

No one wants to stir up controversy regarding an annual gathering meant to unify religious believers, so it’s understandable that press and pundits largely ignored President Obama’s profoundly peculiar remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast on February 5th. Nevertheless, his brief prepared talk (the White House released a text of his comments before he spoke) February 5th in the nation’s capital contained so many provocations, contradictions and flat-footed misstatements that they deserve more serious attention than they’ve received.

BIBLICAL MUDDLE

For instance, the President of the United States (and the speechwriters who undoubtedly helped craft and polish his lines) made a glaring mistake of Biblical attribution. At the center of his speech, Mr. Obama declaimed: “We know too that whatever our differences, there is one law that binds all great religions together. Jesus told us to ‘love thy neighbor as thyself.’” Actually, it was God the Father, or Moses, or the anonymous compilers of the Old Testament who communicated that commandment at least 600 years before Jesus. “Love your neighbor” (Leviticus 19:18) had been identified by Jewish sages as the central instruction of the Torah long before the Nazarene made it the theme of his challenge to corrupt religious officials of his generation.

Moreover, after giving Jesus credit for the most famous passage in the Torah (Five Books of Moses), the President went on to ascribe to the Torah a line that isn’t even there. After explaining what “Jesus told us” Mr. Obama went on: “The Torah commands, ‘That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow.’” Actually, these worthy sentiments appear nowhere in the Old Testament. But they do echo a famous passage of the Talmud (Shabbat 31a) in which Rabbi Hillel (who lived in the first century BC) was asked for a quick summary of the Jewish faith and responded: “What is hateful to you do not do to your fellow. This is the whole Law. The rest is explanation; go and study the explanation.”

In any event, he President’s use of the word “Torah” in this context should have raised red flags among his editors and speechwriters. One of the most toxic misunderstandings concerning the relationship between Christianity and Judaism involves the mistaken belief that Christians center their faith on the Bible, while Jews base their belief on a separate book called “the Torah” which, like the Koran, includes a great deal of distinctive, alien, non-Biblical teaching. In fact, the word Torah (as defined by any dictionary) refers in its primary meaning to the Five Books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) rather than any other arcane religious teachings. The Torah scrolls used in worship at all synagogues and temples around the world include the text of those five books, nothing more, nothing less. This is important, because it means that all Bible-believing Christians by definition embrace and revere the Jewish Torah. It’s a point of unity, not division between the two faiths.

Occasionally, Orthodox Jews do use the term “Torah” to refer to the full accumulation of scripture, law, tradition and interpretation – including the Talmudic passage cited by the President- but the Reform and Conservative Jews who constitute Mr. Obama’s most fervent supporters resist and contest that application of the word.

In any event, the President of the United States (and his staff) made a muddle of some of the most basic religious teachings of the Judeo-Christian tradition – the sort of confusion that would have brought widespread derision and snickers had the mix-up originated with George W. Bush.

PHONY HISTORY

At another point in his two pages of comments, President Obama provided a patently falsified history of the prayer breakfast itself. At the opening of his remarks, he said, “Michelle and I are honored to join you in prayer this morning….It’s a tradition that I’m told actually began many years ago in the city of Seattle. It was the height of the Great Depression, and most people found themselves out of work.” Obviously, even in the darkest days of the 1930’s most people in fact continued to work – no, the unemployment rate never approached 50% -- but the distortion gets much worse. “Many fell into poverty. Some lost everything. The leaders of the community did all that they could for those who were suffering in their midst. And then they decided to do something more: they prayed. It didn’t matter what party or religious affiliation to which they belonged. They simply gathered one morning as brothers and sisters to share a meal and talk with God.”

In reality, the prayer breakfasts that began in Seattle and ultimately spread across the country (and around the world) from the beginning featured a political and pointedly conservative agenda. The movement originated with a Norwegian immigrant and traveling preacher named Abraham Vereide who battled the influence of socialists and radicals among the city’s poor. He understood that suffering workers who didn’t trust in the big G (God) would come to count on the little g (government) – a formulation originated by a much later Seattle clergyman, my friend Rabbi Daniel Lapin. In 1935, Rev. Vereide organized a group known as “The Family” to help the city’s business elite connect with the downtrodden, while conveying powerful anti-Communist and anti-union messages. He soon launched similar efforts in Chicago and San Francisco, before the organization’s leadership moved to D.C. in 1942. At the urging of Christian conservatives in the GOP (in particular Rep. Frank Carlson of Kansas), President Eisenhower spoke at the prayer breakfast in 1953 and all subsequent presidents have followed his example. In any event, the idea that down-and-out believers “simply gathered one morning as brothers and sisters to share a meal and talk with God” is baseless and false, contradicted by the easily available history of The Fellowship Foundation (the new designation of Vereide’s original “Family”) that still sponsors the yearly event.

“TAKING THE LIFE OF AN INNOCENT HUMAN BEING”

In addition to the odd misstatements and distortions in his remarks, President Obama offered a series of contradictions and platitudes that count as puzzling, if not pernicious. Speaking of himself, he declared “I know this breakfast has a long history in Washington, and faith has always been a guiding force in our family’s life, so we feel very much at home.” A few paragraphs later he provided a more honest summary of his own religious history, explaining, “I was not raised in a particularly religious household. I had a father who was born a Muslim but became an atheist, grandparents who were non-practicing Methodists and Baptists, and a mother who was skeptical of organized religion, even as she was the kindest, most spiritual person I’ve ever known.”

Far more significantly, he took this same notion of moral equivalence for all religions (and no religion) to a dubious and in fact dangerous extreme in his talk’s most noteworthy single passage. “We subscribe to different accounts of how we came to be here and where we’re going next – and some subscribe to no faith at all. But no matter what we choose to believe, let us remember that there is no religion whose central tenet is hate. There is no God who condones taking the life of an innocent human being. This much we know.”

With this sweeping simplification, the President of the United States offered instant exoneration to those who follow the false Gods of fanatical Islam or, for that matter, bloodthirsty Marxism.

“No God who condones taking the life of innocent human beings”? Three days after the National Prayer Breakfast, British MP John Whittingdale, Chairman of the House of Commons Media Select Committee, condemned Al-Jazeera’s English language network for broadcasting live sermons by esteemed cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi “celebrating the Holocaust and praying for the killing of all Jews.” Every Friday without exception, radical mosques in various corners of the planet conduct prayerful services not only condoning, but demanding, the massacre of innocents – services often followed by riots and violence. If President Obama paused to consider the nineteen deeply devout hijackers who slaughtered 3,000 Americans on 9/11, and if he reflected on the tens of millions of Muslims around the world who celebrate these killers as “the Magnificent Nineteen,” could he honestly conclude “that there is no religion whose central tenet is hate”?

And in view of the continuing nightmare of Communist tyranny (from Cuba to North Korea), and the murder of at least 100 million human beings in the name of various Marxist utopias, would the president truly insist that it’s “no matter what we believe”? If Communism truly represents “The God That Failed” (as the title of an indispensable 1949 essay collection famously proclaimed) then wasn’t that system precisely the sort of God who sanctioned the mass murder of the blameless?

Moreover, there’s another problem with the President’s conclusion that “there is no God who condones taking the life of an innocent human being.” Days before delivering this resounding declaration, Mr. Obama re-authorized the expenditure of US taxpayer money to finance abortion providers abroad. In a recent case in Florida, the operator of an abortion clinic cut the umbilical cord of an unintentionally delivered baby and, while the infant writhed and gasped for air, placed her inside a biohazard bag which was promptly tossed into the trash. Wouldn’t this constitute “taking the life of an innocent human being”? If “no God” condones such killing, why would the President and his supporters insist on a Constitutional right to partial birth abortion under strikingly similar circumstances?

These questions amount to more than nit-picking for a president who wants to win the trust and support of religious believers. When speaking to Washington’s biggest religious event, his misattribution of both Biblical and Talmudic citations displayed the sort of sloppiness and disrespect that would have brought stinging denunciation of George W. Bush, or of Bill Clinton, for that matter.

He also offered a fraudulent summary of the history of the prayer breakfast which disguised the event’s original, inconveniently conservative message—that trust in God represented a more liberty-loving and life-affirming alternative than trust in government.

His suggestion that “faith has always been a guiding force in our family’s life” combined with recollections of his “skeptical” mother as the most “spiritual person I’ve ever known,” underlined the long-standing position of smug secularists that “organized religion” bears no connection to “spirituality.”

Finally, by absolving all faiths of preaching “hate” or condoning senseless mass killing, President Obama not only ignored but denied the core difference between the United States and our Islamo-Nazi adversaries. He pointedly refused to acknowledge the religious fanaticism at the very heart of the deadly forces that threaten us.

Yes, the president earns credit for choosing to appear at the prayer breakfast—overriding demands by separationist militants that he become the first chief executive in fifty years to shun the occasion. He also took pains with his mostly devout audience to express sympathy and support for the general role of religion in American life. But the substance of his remarks deserves more examination than their style, and in this regard the President of the United States served up a breakfast repast with no nourishment at all and even a sour hint of toxicity.

hmmm
does Obama follow the black theology that Rev. Wright teaches? There are plenty of Africans over here studying in seminaries who condone the black theological stance. I know plenty of them, as my father is a minister. This article just shows that Obama is just willing to appease the masses, never really taking a strong point on any of the major religions, whilst falsely quoting and not knowing the people who uttered the words. I do know some practicing Islamic Americans here, but over in the middle east it's a different story. Especially for Christians. Muslims kill Christians all the time for their beliefs. I don't see vice verse. Mainly because Christianity is peaceful, especially followers of the New Testament. Islamic radicals, however, are completely opposite. Weird how he can say its peaceful and yet all the terrorists who attacked on 9/11 did it for Allah.

No God...
BHOs real hidden assertion is that there is no God and that by saying that there is no God that condones, implying that there are many Gods. This is a slap in the face to many who believe in One (not to be confused with the One)true God. He is masterful at pitting people against each other (black against white, poor against rich, union against white collar, Christian against Muslim, etc.) it is shameful that he would do that at this forum. His real mission at this breakfast was to announce to the country that he is happy to equate ACORN and their ilk to the status of neighborhood charity.

Isn't it ironic he would use spiritual and atheists in the same breath.

Love thy Neighbor originated from Jesus
It is actually true that Jesus gave the commandments in the OT since he as God is co-equal to the Father and the Holy Spirit. He was present with God at Mt. Sinai. Michael Medved obviously rejects that truth. However, his rejection can not make it any less true. So I will give Obama's slip its higher metaphysical truth. The Torah as well as the New Testament came from the same living God - the God that has revealed Himself in the incarnation of Jesus Christ . Reject that living God at your own risk. Like the futile Ernest Hemingway, you can spit and rage at the truth as if you can determine it but in the end - you live once and die and then the judgment. Only through Christ are the commandments and the blessing of the Torah's commandments kept according to God's perfect standard - reject the grace offered through Christ and you accept the demanding terms of perfection that the Law requires. God does not grade on the curve but on the cross of Jesus Christ.

Ask About This Instead....
Although I enjoyed this article, these very valid arguments are lost on Obama. First, since he disdains America and may not even been a natural-born American citizen, he knows no American history beyond that which his handlers feed him. Second, he has been associated with Islam then with Black Liberation Theory, so he is not a Christian. One cannot expect him to know anything about the United States or Christianity. You must, however, ask him about the Muslim call to prayer; he knows a great deal about that.

Wrong quote?
Christ DID say "love thy neighbor, as thyself" according to Matthews. Both Obama and the author is correct, this passage originates from Leviticus...At the risk of being wrong, I would submit that Obama's trying to tie the quote between Christianity and Judaism. Indeed, Christ himself was QUOTING the commandment (from the old testament)on request of an orthodox priest.

hmmmm
thank you for posting this Michael. Egads how sick of some to kill an incocent baby. may the Lord God remember.

let me tell you all this. on Sept11,2003 i flew into kulua lumpur Malaysia and from there over to kota kinabalu sabah Malaysia. on the plane in front of me was a muslim with the paper high enough for me to read. He happened to have it high enough so i can see one of the articles talking about the 19 matrys. i wanted to gag and said to myself with big eyes "what am i doing here" .

Don't Cry Wolf
In fact, I am surprized Obama made it through without any flameing goof up.

You should be thankfull he made sure the food was Kosher.

That would have been a substantial goof up to talk about.

How pedestrian you are to lament his abortion hipocrisy in such a predictable way.

Michael Medved
All during the election period, I heard people
making derogatory remarks about the company
that Obama kept, like Wright and Ayers.

Well Medved, this is the company you keep. Are
you happy about that?

1) from Katz: "he disdains America and may not even been a natural-born American citizen, he knows no American history...he has been associated with Islam then with Black Liberation Theory, so he is not a Christian. One cannot expect him to know anything about the United States or Christianity.

2) " He is masterful at pitting people against each other (black against white, poor against rich, union against white collar, Christian against Muslim, etc.)" By Michael

3)"Muslims kill Christians all the time for their beliefs " Thank you, Eric.

These are your compadres? Isn't it great.

Michael Medved
"contained so many provocations, contradictions and flat-footed misstatements that they deserve more serious attention than they’ve received."

No actually, they do not deserve more serious
attention.

Beyond the "fact" (not proven) that Obama does
not define the Torah in the same way as the
most observant of Jews, in no way means that
he needs to be castigated. There are just not
that many who really care whether Jews and
Christians define the Torah in the same way or
not.

There are also just not that many who care
whether he got the history exactly right on
the prayer breakfasts either. I wonder how
long it took you to look it up so that you
would have something else to bellyache about it. The quality of what you are bellyaching
about speaks volumes - you don't haven't something better to gripe about.

And your statements about his dedication to
his religion are outrageous in the extreme.
Perhaps you should look to the quality of
your own religion. Or do you believe that defending Judaism is the ultimate observation of your religion, coupled with mocking the
quality of the religion of others?

Well Mr. Medved,
Consider this: If Jesus is who He says He is than what The Torah said is what He said not the reverse.

MEDVED E-MAILS GOD TOO
Hey Mike-Did you ever stop to think that what matters most is that a person's heart is in the right place. You're not too hard to read, you'd criticize Obama if his socks looked funny.I don't think any of your points made diddley,or have any merit or relevancy. You should be ashamed of yourself, trying to sow the evil hatred of sublety.I'm Jewish and you are disgusting.

God help us all!!
I also found it interesting actually horrifying that at his inaguration he actually made a statement "including non-believers". He obviously has no conception of how our great country came to be---not from a group of "non believers" but a group of men who fortold that our constitution would only work if the country itself was made up of moral,God fearing men and women. The first time in all of our history that a president was so far into secular humanism that he would actually include nonbelievers with those who know only one true God as easily as one would put peanut butter with jelly!!

DID I OFFEND GOD?
In my satirical poem Messiahnomics 101 I referred to Obama, Reid and Pelosi as the "new divine trinity." Some of you have written me warning that this could be offensive to God. This may or may not be true. However, in case He is offended then I'll make my peace with Him by renaming this troika of stupidity by its right and proper trinitarian name: THE THREE BLIND MICE

Tammy
What did President Obama get right?

Does Katz posting on Townhall show the same relationship to Michael Medved that President Obama listening to Rev. Wright preach for twenty years?

Ignorance is Strength
Millions of secretaries every day quietly save their ignorant Generation Whine bosses from making the same egregious mistakes by correcting them in written documents and behind closed doors in their offices before they can be trumpeted to the world. Before women were liberated this used to be called the Westchester Degree -- the education that a wife got so she could keep her husband from naming his new line of motorcycles the Virago and from using the word *jettison* to mean *take off like a jet plane* ...

Obama was unfortunate in his choice of a wife who is just as ignorant as he is, apparently, and a secretary who thinks LOL is a word.

Fools Rush In...
This performance seems natural to me considering that most conservatives believe Barry Obama is a phony from the get-go. And the young people who surround him and adore him have no foundations in religion and philosophy. They are pseudo Marxists who really believe, despite the lessons of history, that they can change the world without heeding counsel from the greatest spiritual leaders of humankind. What amazes me is that his Jewish supporters have no clue that his core beliefs could lead to the destruction of Israel.

Don't Blame This Messiah
I wasn't at the breakfast but I'd bet that he didn't have a teleprompter.

Attention to details....
I'm glad someone is paying attention to EVERY word this "man"ikin is saying. He is still a great unknown but more of who he is, truly, is emerging bit by bit. We all knew he was bad news for this country! The more you read about him (without the self-induced haze of idol-worship), the clearer you can see that style has trumped substance because substance is non-existent.

Isn't it a sad state of affairs that the ordinary citizen has no standing in asking for proof of citizenship from the POTUS?

There's a fitting verse from the Bible about "when you are old they will take your hand and lead you somewhere you do not want to go....."
Fits what Zero and his crew are doing to us and to our country now.

Gee, Religious Cons...
Matthew 22:36-40 (New International Version)

36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[a] 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[b] 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

No no no no no no no. Jesus did not say it. Michael Medved says so, therefore The Bible and The Google and every religious scholar in the world is wrong.

Idiots.

Islam condones the
taking of innocent life and "takkiyan" - lying to Infidels in order to deceive them.

Petty Argument here
While Obama's quote on killing innocents is indeed contrary to his pro-abortion stance and deserves some attention, your article is extremely petty and somewhat inaccurate. Sorry.

Obama is right...
No God condones the taking of an innocent human being's life IF you allow each belief system to define the terms the way they choose. Obviously "innocent" for some Muslims does NOT include "the infidels". Obviously "human being" for Obama himself, does NOT include babies before birth. And if we want to be stickers about it, even the definition of "God" is up for grabs: I think a Satanist WOULD condone taking innocent lives, for example. This President is trying to be all things to all people in the name of popularity and power, but he can only do so at the cost of the consistency of his own inner convictions. Thank God for Medved for doing such a masterful job at pointing that out. Let our own principled convictions remain solid in promoting all that is good (even in what this President does) and in opposition to evil, whether it be condoned or lost in moral equivalency by our President or not.

There is no religion...
Whose central tenet is hate. I guess the Koran does not convey hatred for the Children of the BOok - Jews and Christians= when it says to kill them wherever you find them, beleaguer them at every turn. He is a liar who counts on the ignorance and poor education of the American people. Islam does not mean peace, it means submission, and Islam wants the entire world to submit to it to form the caliphate. I teach terrorism courses at a university where I make sure to cover the Koran. None of the students knew this about the Koran, and I would bet that the majority of Americans don't either. It is insulting to me when any person in a position of authority speaks to us counting on our ignorance instead of telling us the truth. It is the ultimate form of style over substance. What happened to "the truth will set you free"? Shouldn't Bama the Magic Negro know about that one?

O
has referred to the taking of innocent life more than once while he endorses, supports and condones the torture and execution of our most innocent and vulnerable citizens. Now with his
so called stimulus he's going to solve the Social Security and medicare problem by rationing medical care to those over 55. Daschle the father of the stealth health reform
provision in this abominable bill said that
the elderly will take the brunt. And you can bet that any babies not deemed well enough to]
live in the perfect kingdom of O, will be
passively euthanized just as their grannies and granpas.
Jesus also said something about shining on the outside but stinking on the inside..right now
O reeks.
We didn't see much in the drivebys regarding the wisdom of O in his speech. He's really treading on dangerous ground..there once was a king who saw the handwriting on the wall (Dan 5)
the next day the wall was still there..the king wasn't. God will not be mocked.
The sad thing is we will suffer His wrath also because we have turned from him in such numbers that we hired an athieist or worse.

jesus said
Jesus is QUOTING an OT passage, inthemajority. If you quote Obama do we attribute the quote to you? No, the quote is attributed to the author.

Yes, Jesus is God (in the flesh), but he is quoting an OT passage here and the Obama speech writers demonstrate their ignorance when they attribute the quote to Jesus.

I reread Medved's pretentious ramblings
And it gets more insane with each reading. I wonder how Medved would treat a President who claimed the economy was strong and the people should simply go out and buy stuff -- right when something could have been done to help prevent Bush's second worst catastrophe (Iraq being the first on my list).

Now THAT would be someone with absolutely no understanding of an economy.

Much worse would be a President who claimed he spoke to God and was told to start a war. * is till around, but I was wondering when the lightning was going to strike.

Verbivore
"Jesus is QUOTING an OT passage"

Yes, I get that Medved thinks he understands exactly who wrote the Bible books, what they were thinking, who they were quoting, and when all of this came together, and what reasons each King had in mind when they were rewritten and translated.

I'm guessing it would have be a better speed to Medved (and you) if Obama had Bushified his speech with "Jesus said, as written in Matthew 22:39, as a direct quote from God the Father, or Moses, or the anonymous compilers of the Old Testament -- who communicated that commandment at least 600 years before Jesus --“Love your neighbor”, as written in (Leviticus 19:18) and had been identified by Jewish sages as the central instruction of the Torah long before the Nazarene made it the theme of his challenge to corrupt religious officials of his generation."

Whew. Now THAT would be a great speech.

Want to be more picky? Obama should have said:
"Jesus said, as written by some people well after his death (as described to them by others who may or may not have met the man), which appears to be a quote from an OT book written by a bunch of other guys so long ago we have no idea which portion are parables and which ones actually happened with any degree of certainly - and then was several times modified to suit Kings, "Love they neighbor..."

Then, and only then could Medved conclude that Obama had clearly covered all bases.

Nit-pick mania
The country is on the brink and Medved resorts to silly, hypocritical, self-serving, distortive nit-picking.

We have seen the future of conservatism and it is Medved. Has he a serious bone in his body?

Believing in Religion
Michael, thanks for a thought-provoking article. I'd like to share a few thoughts.

GOD is not a Christian or a Jew. God is not Muslim or a Hindu. God is not an American. God is not a Communist or a Conservative either (This may be a little off-subject, but it seems that "Conservativism" has become a religion to many people). God doesn't love one group of people more than any other. God is more vast than any box humans try to put Him into. God is all around us and within us. God is our ability to love and put the needs of others above ourselves. I may no longer believe in religion, but I'm no atheist!

While God may have created man; man created religion. For years I went to church and studied the Bible. There is much truth in what I found there--Love. Forgive. Treat others as you would have them treat you. Refrain from judging others (lest you be judged). These are tenets of all the world's religions. How wonderful it would be if we could truly follow these principles rather than concentrate on the petty differences that separate us.

As for abortion, there have always been abortions and there probably always will be. But is criminalizing abortion the best solution? Certainly we can and should impose limitations on abortions--parental notification, bans on late-term abortions, etc. But mostly, we should concentrate on reducing unwanted pregnancies and helping babies born into poverty gain have access to have what Jesus called the "abundant life."

God help us all.
Only Jesus said "love your neighbor as yourself," expanding the OT imperative. That said, Obama's muddled religious views will be a sore handicap when he seeks to lead our nation through a true "catastrophe." His poor handling of what is in front of him right now. He needs all our prayers.

Liberals reading impaired
InTheMajority quotes Matthew 22:36-40 (Not Inspired Version):

36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37 Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

Jesus was being ask which of the Old Testement (Law) commandments was the greatest. He quoted the Old Testement verse Michael Medved mentioned. Notice the inner ticks "'" on the parts he is quoting.

If I quoute it, will you attribute it to me?

JKoos
"Only Jesus said "love your neighbor as yourself," expanding the OT imperative"

check Lev. 19:18

" 'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

Scrutiny of Obama Forbidden?
Speech writers should take care to be accurate. But, they don't seem to be worried that anyone knows such things as the history of the event or would bother to research it. They don't seem to feel the need for accuracy in what the President says, for they assume that the listeners are so happy to be in the presence of the enlightened one, that they'll never question the truthfulness of what he says.

Christians tend to quote the Gospels and St. Paul. Jews tend to quote the Old Testement. The same commandments appear in both. We were always taught that the first three commandments summed up,"Love God with our whole heart...," and the remaining seven, "Love your neighbor as yourself." These teachings appear in both Books of the Bible."

Someone as educated as Obama is should know what accurate information in his speeches because there are a few of us out there who may have the audacity to call him on it.

Lon
There is a major difference between Christians, Jews and the radical Islamists Michael speaks of. Christians and Jews DO NOT condone, or hold in esteem the actions of folks like Eric Rudolf, or the "Israeli nutcase". We DISOWN such actions, and the nutjobs who perform them, and most times are the first to condemn them publically. Radical Islamists, on the other hand, make martyrs of their followers who kill the most innocents, and revere all such actions as "holy". Were you sleeping when video of the Palestinians dancing in the streets celebrating the demise of 3000 Americans on 9/11 was shown? Or, how about the mural of the 9/11 tragedy Sadaam Hussein had painted in one of his palaces? Or do you think good ole' Sadaam's mural is a monument to the Americans who died that day? There is a VERY MAJOR difference between Christianity, Judaism, and radical Islam, and only ignorant fools contend "the golden rule is central to all religions".

Oh, right, Obama is deeply religious...

If Obama thinks he's kidding anyone about his supposed deep and abiding faith then he's in complete denial. His position on abortion is proof enough that his faith is lukewarm or utterly absent; or is it that he thinks God smiles on man's kooky fixation with snuffing out human life before it can be born? (and sometimes just after human life has been born).

Like most hard-left liberals, they're definition of what consistutes life worth saving is non-absolute and wholly connected with ideology. A terrorist's life is precious to them, while a baby is a "punishment," to use Obama's words. And yet, like most hard leftists, they continue to believe they're on the side of the angels and goodness.

Drugged to Denial
Ever hear of: Bonnie Witherall, Fr. Digal, Graham, Philip, Timothy Stains? These gave their lives loving people; not using planes or explosives to kill infidels.

There are many whose agenda is to defend Obama at all cost. If they don't they will have to repent, and we know the opposition to that reformation.

American society is far from Jesus Christ. We are receiving the harvest of humanism. Repent and pray for mercy on yourself, your family, and America.

"Who is a liar but he that denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is an anti-Christ, that denies the Father and the Son." 1Jn 2.22

Teachings of Reverend Wright ...
I guess Prez Obama was to busy learning to chant "God Damn America", and to say Ameri KKK a at his instruction sessions with Reverend Wright.

Perhaps he spent more time studying the writings of James Cone, and other black liberation theology texts than he spent studying the Bible.

Are you suprised?

Sigh
Islam: Most Muslims don't even live in the Middle East. Most Muslims aren't extremists, although there are more extremist Muslims than extremist Christians. Plenty of Christians have warred and terrorized in the name of God, just not so much recently. Islam is obviously in need of reform, and we should focus on helping them achieve it rather than hating them for not yet having done so.

Breakfast: I guess it's a good thing he wasn't elected to be biblical scholar-in-chief.

Non-believers: Yeah, he acknowledged the existence of some Americans some of ya'll don't like. Deal.

Communist God
The analogy of communism as a God is an excellent one. It is however, preposterous to include the metaphorical 'god of communism' as some sort of actual god Obama was referring to when he was talking about gods. There's a point where picking apart someone's every word says more about the person doing the dissecting than the person on the slab.

Obama is just a dead branch . . .
and the sooner that ALL the followers of Christ realize that, the better. It is not my place to confirm or deny Obama's salvation or relationship with God, only the Lord does that. What I can say is that a person who is a true Christian and a living branch of the True Vine bears spiritual fruit. A person who does not bear "fruit" and proclaims to be of Christ is a dead branch and will be cast into the fire. I've yet to see Obama bear spiritual fruit according to Scripture. It's all very simple.

Also, Medved is wrong (I hate to admit it). Obama simply said that "Jesus told us..." Well, Jesus did tell us that we should love our neighbors. Just because this isn't the first mention of it in the Bible doesn't discount the fact that Jesus, in fact, said it... even if he was simply repeating it.

Substance?
Michael notes:

"But the substance of his remarks deserves more examination than their style"

Obama is ONLY style. He is the actor playing the part of the President on TV. Neither is there substance, nor is anyone caring.

The scary thing is...who IS really running things now as Obama prances around on the media stage?

What? Will you please interpret your post?

inthemajority @8:42 am
Jesus was quoting the Torah; what he said should have been known to his interrogator. You evince a lack of understanding with your comment.

Don Juan @9:17 am
It is true that you will not find the second great commandment in the Decalogue (nor the first one either). However, Jesus said that the Law and the Prophets hang on these two great commandments. In other words, the Decalogue (and all the other laws) and the prophets tell us more of how we are to love God and one another.

OK I'll waste a few minutes
explaining to libs who have NEVER opened a Bible or a Koran (other than to quote out of context)what the diiference is:

God, in the Bible, gave specific commands to specific people at specific times about how to carry out specific battles.

Satan, in the Koran, tells his followers to kill ALL Christians and ALL jews at ALL times.

God, in the Bible, tells all mankind that they may be forgiven their sins and enter the kingdom if they accept the sacrafice HE (as Christ) has made.

Satan, in the Koran, tells people they can get to paradise by killing anyone who rejects Islam. That is the ONLY guarenteed entrance to paradise in the Koran.

RIGHT ON MICHAEL MEDVED !
EVERY TIME BARRY SPEAKS,ITS BEST TO GO DETOX BY READING SOME BIBLE VERSES WITH PRAYER!THE DUDE IS FULL OF CHAOS!

For the words...
'taking the life of an innocent human being' to come out of the mouth of a pro-abortion, pro-late term abortion, pro-killing of born alive abortion survivor babies is an abomination.

Obama is no Christian, and to try to persuade those who know better that he is one is a joke.

Come to think of it, most of what comes from his mouth is a joke...on the American public!

How long, I wonder, will it take for those drunk on 'kool-aid' to find out their idol has feet of clay?

Dean
thank you for your clarity.

medved continues to try and couple Christianity and Judaism as one religion.

unless i have totally misinterpreted 50 years of Christian and biblical teachings, Judaism does not accept Jesus Christ as the son of God and the Messiah. This means they are actually anti-Christian.

What If This Were President Bush????
How many of you posting comments defending Obama because of Michael Medved's column would do the same if this would've been Bush? You would bash Bush in a quick second w/o facts, but with some facts in front of you regarding Obama's speech, you defend him in that same quick second. What has happened to people in this country?

its hilarious...
that all these people from Illinoise defend their man, meanwhile Chicagao has one the highest poverty, crime, and drop out rates in the country. You people simply cannot wrap your head around the concepts in which Medved clearly explains. It simply does not sink into your brain. It should terrify you that the president of the United States thinks that "all religions are equal," when less than a decade ago those so called "peaceful" Muslims were slamming planes into the WTC. You'll think quite differently about Mr. Obama and the rest of the "peacful" religions when Iran drops a nuke in Chicago, and all life in Illinoise ceases to exist. Quite frankly, I have lost respect for many of those from your state. First this clown, now Blagovich. It's not surprising that 4 of the last 8 Governors in your state have been convicted of corruption, morons like yourselves keep voting them into office. Keep up the good work Illinoise, you should be really proud.

Uh, Ellen,you are wrong
Yahweh does have a chosen people--the Hebrew people, what most people forget is Yeshuah was sent for the Hebrews to embrace, only by his rejection,we the Gentiles are grafted into the Hebrew fig tree through the blood sacrifice--there is no salvation without the shedding of blood-Yeshuah said "no greater love hath a man-the Greek alludes to humankind-that he would freely(of free will) give-the Greek alludes to a gift beyond measure-his life for another. "

We Expect More of Kids in Middle School
I find it interesting that some on this thread are willing to give Obama a pass regarding he and his speech writers inability to give appropriate attribution and Obama's inability to recognize the disconnect between his comments and actions. In regard to Obama's Biblically referenced statements, if these same comments had been written by a middle school student in a Jewish, Catholic, or protestant school, the poor kid would have been taken to task for sloppy research/writing skills. In regard to the statements about innocent life, how can anyone with even a modicum of knowledge of Obama's voting regard in Illinois or Congress not see the disconnect between his actions and words?
Medved is right to take Obama to task. When a president cannot function above that of a middle school student, I would hope someone would speak out pointing out that fact to the public. It is obvious the MSM which has become the Obama teen idol crush cult is not going to point out these facts.

Matt, on Illinois
I'm currently stationed in Kansas but Illinois is where I call home. The state as a whole is not all that blue however, Chicago runs Illinois politics. Thats where all the numbers come from. It's a shame that the whole state has to suffer for the mistakes of that City. The only good that comes from Chicago is the Bears.:)

Sadness
Everyday, I feel sadder about what the majority of Americans have done. I didn't agree with BHO when he was running for the office of President, I disagree with him even more everyday. He not only lack a moral compass, but I am coming to believe that he lacks even a shred of sense. The left in our country always accused GWB of being dumb. I am now certain they replaced him with Dumber.

To PHILIP IN WA
Right on! I'm with you 100 percent. I haven't watched TV news since the election cause I can't bear to hear that name over and over. I'm not missing anything either. I read lots more.

Philip
Now you know how I felt for 8 years. We'll see how things look after the next four.

I want my president to have NO
religion. NONE. Keep it to himself. I don't care if he attributes words to God or Jesus or Huckleberry Hound.

Obama's in til 1/20/17. Hopefully, he'll stop this religious nonsense in its tracks. Keep your religious beliefs to yourselves.

Cafeteria Christians
As a Jew, Medved might have the right to complain that Jesus was not the true source of “love thy neighbor as thyself,” but Christians have no such right. All they have to do is read John: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” And then skip down to: “And the Word became flesh and lived among us…”.

If Jesus is The Word, made flesh, every word of the Bible is his. For a Christian who understands his religion, Obama is absolutely correct.

COLDPLAYLOVER
I'm with you on that. There's no pleasing a person who is determined to twist a religion into a political tool. It's best to ignore those people and ignore religion entirely. This I believe is one of Obama's biggest faults. He thinks he can talk their language and they'll appreciate it. It won't happen because it was never about religion in the first place.

The Shema
Recorded in Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:4-5. The Shema was the highest expression of worship in Israel and was meant to be used in great solemnity. Go read it for yourselves to understand the context of both references.

Ironically, from a Christian standpoint, Jesus was quoting Himself, since He is God. It's okay that Medved, a Jew, doesn't recognize that; the Bible tells us he will someday. Jesus then followed the Shema with an addition, which together synopsizes the 10 Commandments. Love God first and foremost and with all that you have and then love your neighbor.

More disturbing is that Mr. Obama misquoted it, putting the emphasis on loving your neighbor. As one who has read Jesus in all four Gospels many many times, I can say with confidence that Jesus meant to put the emphasis just as He did -- love God FIRST and FOREMOST and WITH EVERYTHING YOU HAVE and ARE. Then, and only then, you can love your neighbor as you should. Not that Mr. Obama doesn't have a lot of company in misunderstanding the gospel; just that it's an elementary mistake that a Bible-based Christian shouldn't be making.

COLDPLAYLOVER
Mr. Obama is not owed a second term and his current track record is likely to see him needing to use the Rose Garden strategy that Carter used -- you know, the one that didn't see our hostages released from Iran and didn't win him a second term.

He's in office until 01/20/2013. We'll see how he does without his buddies in the House come January 2011. I predict even you'll wish you hadn't voted for him by this time next year.

Where do I get that from? I campaigned for Carter in 1976 and had four years to regret that decision. He had the same message of doom and gloom and let's capitulate to our enemies and things just didn't turn out well for him, our economy or our foreign policy. I'm guessing, given your moniker, that you're not old enough to remember Carter.

aurorawatcher
I voted for Ford but I too regretted for four years those of you who campaigned for Carter. :)

Donjindra
I wasn't old enough to vote yet, which is why I campaigned for Carter. Unfortunately, I did vote for him in 1980 (I thought an actor had no business being POTUS; boy, was I wrong!). Fortunately, the rest of the country disagreed with me.

I feel like I have no excuse for my behavior in 1980, but I explain it as -- I was 20 and that's not a very bright age. By the time I was 24, I had become much smarter.

I think this is the exact scenario todays Obama-ites are going to experience. They feel SO elated right now, but as the economic doldrums we're experiencing now bind us and drag the economy toward true crisis, they'll really wish they'd voted for the "other guy". In 2012, many of voted for Mr. Obama in 2008 will insist they didn't. Mark my words! History, especially if we don't learn from it (or worse, refuse to learn from it) has a way of repeating itself. Mr. Obama is Carter with darker skin.

aurorawatcher
I voted for Obama. I seriously doubt I'll regret it -- not because I have a great deal of faith in him. Rather, I have no confidence in current Republicans to do any better.

Sheesh, all this nitpicking over a
simple prayer? Woweee. get ready folks. Its going to be a bumpy one. These losers will do anything to destroy Obama and in the process wreck the country. My bad, they already did that. If this is the ruckus they are raising over a prayer, imagine what they would do over a (fill in the blank).

The Obama-Nation (Abomination)
We are all going to be losers if we do not fail to recognize that Mr Obama (I just cannot yet call him with the title 'president' because he just does not play the part well)is likely VERY conflicted over his Muslim religion--a reference he himself made to George Stephanopoulos on an ABC News program--his Muslim relatives, and the outright violent racism of Mr Wright, the man Mr Obama claims 'led' Mr Obama to some radical separatist ideology that Mr Obama claims passes for Christianity. This internal conflict will raise its ugly head during the administration and will negatively affect our war on terrorism. As Mr Biden referenced, we are going to face a major crisis under BHO, and this is going to be a root cause.

Medved thinks Obama has to come to him.
But, in fact, it is Medved and those like him who have to meet Obama half way. The President was gracious to attend the prayer breakfast when he didn't really need to do so, but he wants to keep the 'big tent' and include everybody in it including religious believers.

The fact is that religion in general, the 'God fearing' ones anyway, are nearing the end of their useful life in human affairs. We live in a sea of unknowns. There is no longer any reason to choose the beliefs in the unknown promulgated by religion over those promoted by science or even by the practitioners of voodoo. One set of unknowns is as good as any other for guidance in the modern world.

What the religious believers don't understand is that they are no longer running the show as they have done for the past two thousand years.

Barbara
"We all knew he was bad news for this country! "

Sorry, but you are wrong. Most of us know that
he is the best thing to come along in a very
long time.

Obama Best Thing..If You're A Socialist.
Tammy,
In your reply to Barbara you said regarding Obama:
"Sorry, but you are wrong. Most of us know that
he is the best thing to come along in a very
long time. "

Sorry Tammy, but don't use the word "most" because at least 1/2 the people in this country would disagree with you. The only way Obama can be the best thing to come along is if you're a Socialist.

Are we all that naive?
Look, if Bush, or Clinton, or Regan had made all those ridiculous statements about Islam being a religion of "peace" (i.e. "peace" in the Western sense, not the Islamic sense), I would excuse them for being poorly informed. But Obama spent several years in an Islamic midrassa. Obama must, MUST(!) know what Islam teaches. He must know what is in the Quran, about the rule of abrogation, about the Hadith, etc. For Obama, our first Islam-literate president, to make these completely false statements about no religion advocating the killing of others, is just a lie. I believe the jihadists call this "taqiya", in which deception is used to protect those who advance the cause of Islam where it has not yet achieved hegemony. I did not want to believe this, but his statements on Al-Arabiya and at this prayer breakfast, coupled with his Muslim education, can lead to no other possible conclusion: Barak Obama is preparing the United States to eventually accept Sharia law as superior to Constitutional law (as we are beginning to see now in Europe). I know I can't be the only one to put this together!

Phillip
I don't know if people like you are truly this delusional or if you suspect the rest of America is that gullible. Either way, keep it up. I'm confident your rhetoric will continue to discredit conservatives.

OBAMA'S DISTORTION OF HISTORY
Michael: An outstanding piece and as usual, spot on. I hope you sent a copy of this to Obama.

The President's Revisionist Faith
Michael, you have ably demonstrated the principle taught by both Deval Patrick and President Barack Obama, that WORDS MATTER. They say, but why don't they believe it?

To Philip in NJ
Please keep writing that information. Despite what that poster told you, the people in this country ARE that gullible or they wouldn't have voted this new guy with his history in in the first place! Please keep informing the readers of that Sharia law business. I read England is slowly going that way despite loud citizens' complaints. Very scary!

Karen
You are the gullible one. It's totally irrational to believe 1) that Obama intends to impose Sharia law, or 2) he has any power to do so.

The only thing we have to fear in the USA -- and it's a very remote fear -- is the imposition of biblical law.

Whoodathunkit
For all of the know-nuthins [liberals] we are not too many years away from a violent crsis in MOST European nations because the increasing muslim populations are pushing for the False Prophet's [Gee wonder who that is, in case you haven't figured it out yet.] type of laws.

We are only a short few years from those protests and eventual trials here. Wake up and smell the camels.

A Prayer Rug & Black Face Mecca
Of all the things we don’t know about Obama – a 40-something-year-old man with a tiny and blurred by lies, half-truths and misinformation footprint on this planet – we do know 1) he was born and raised a Muslim by a Communist Kenyan Muslim father so says his unwed, teenage mother knocked up by some black man, 2) an Indonesian Muslim stepfather in Obama’s “formative years” as he described them in one of two autobiographical books bearing his name, and 3) was further influenced strongly by Jeremiah Wright in The United Church of Christ in Chicago.
Obama took the name of one of the books, The Audacity of Hope, from one of Wright’s black separatist, racist rants that Obama says he did not hear in 20+ years at the church. The church honored both W.E.B. DuBois, a self-avowed black Communist, anti-U.S. protestor, and Louis Farrahkan, head of the Nation of Islam. Wright mentored Obama, baptized Obama and his family members, performed the marriage ceremony of Barack Hussein/Barry and Michelle, and taught Obama “Christianity” based on black liberation theology.
During his most heavily and secret-financed, long campaign for President, an office to which his eligibility is much in question let alone his qualifications after only 142 days in the U.S. Senate, IL Senate voting present a record number of times, ACORN-connected community organizer as well as his other nefarious connections, Obama said Jesus condoned in the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes same-sex relationships. So why might we be surprised by the errors Obama made and the lies he told at the Prayer Breakfast?

Donjindra the CA Gullible
Please see my post – A Prayer Rug & Black Face Mecca. Add to that Obama’s Chi-town thugs political background and his statement that he wants a Civilian National Security Force equal in funding and strength to the U.S. military, renewed talk in Congress by Liberal Democrats of reviving some form of Selective Service and the most recent ramming through the Congress of the Porkulus Package with only three “Republican” votes, Senators Spector, Snowe and Collins. Then you may be able to answer your own naïve, uninformed question even as gullible and ignorant as you apparently are.

Ronald
Your post doesn't have any evidence concerning Obama's supposed intention or ability to impose Sharia law. It's just a typical rant from a conspiracy theorist. If that’s the direction conservatives want to go, fine. Expect marginalization.

Cospiracy Show
.

Michael,

I thought you would like to see an insert of your positive influence on me vie the "Conspiracy Show." You may seem like this show is a waste of time (considering the types of calls you receive), but it is vital. If you ever write a book on it -- and you should -- I have about a hundred of the most read books on the topic that you may borrow.

Peace for a thousand years be upon you Mike.

Donjindra Most Gullible & Uneducable
If you cannot see in my posts the evidence concerning Obama’s intentions and ability to stand with the Muslims you are an ostrich – head in the sand, butt high in the air, waiting for what comes next.
No ranting here; no conspiracy theorists like Lib Dems on Bush responsible for everything including planning and carrying out the 9/11 attacks by Islamic jihadists.
I am only an astute, aware, educated, trained and practiced collector and collator of truth, facts and real history to make informed, rational, logical decisions.
Since you and other Lib Dem Obamaniacs insist on going the direction you are going, following your Messiah, expect horrible things to happen to you.
Then, fine, be a big person about it and accept personal responsibility for what you have done to yourself and others.

Ronald
"I am only an astute, aware, educated, trained and practiced collector and collator of truth, facts and real history to make informed, rational, logical decisions."

Very funny.

By your twisted reasoning David Horowitz was raised by Marxists so he is a Marxist. Stalin was raised as a Christian so he was a Christian. I guess for you people are billiard balls, totally at the mercy of their environment. Knock them one direction and it's a simple matter of plotting their inevitable course. Rub shoulders with the wrong person and you're doomed.

I think it's you who has been knocked upside the head once too often but I can't predict which way you'll fall.

BTW, I'm neither "liberal" nor a Democrat. I'm neither a "conservative" nor Republican. I'm caught in some kind of purgatory where political heaven and hell look to be suspiciously alike.

please
A particularly error-laden, brain-dead column, even by your down a ditch standards Mister Medved.

Let's start with the easiest -- Jesus did say "Love thy neighbor..." unless perhaps the book of Matthew falls under the same maybe zone as that whole Torah-Talmud argument you sort of back out of there.

Matthew 22:39, check it out http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=47&chapter=22 &version=31

Jesus said...
Go into all the world and preach the gospel. HE DID NOT SAY... go into all the world and unite with those that hate Me.

Donjidra
"I voted for Ford but I too regretted for four years"

Well he was only President for one year, and he was never elected President. Nobody voted for Ford, except constituents of Michigan's 5th congressional district.

ignatov
"Well he was only President for one year, and he was never elected President."

Exactly what I said. I voted for Ford. Carter won. He served four years. What's your point?

Killing the Innocent
Obama is right that no religion condones the taking of innocent life. It's just that they disagree about what constitutes innocence.

For Christianity the doctrine of Original Sin makes all people guilty by nature. The only way that the guilt can be absolved is by the acceptance of Christ as your savior. Therefore, it is perfectly alright to murder infidels and witches both of which were slaughtered mercilessly during the Dark and Middle Ages.

Islam is notorious for its persecution and murder of infidels today. Guilt consists of not being a Muslim. In many, if not most, Islamic states (including Afghanistan, a US creation) apostasy is a capital offense. No one can innocently leave the Islamic faith.

It is only in the matter of what constitutes innocence that separates religions today.

In the matter of Obama's ignorance of various religions: Who is surprised that a man so ignorant of economics, history and science should also be ignorant of the origins of religious ideas?

THE REASON
our country has been such a successful country and for the most part such a blessing to the rest of the world is because it was founded upon and continues to embrace, though less so as time goes by, Judeo-Christian values and doctrine. I'm sorry if you lefties hate that, but it simply IS. If it makes you all hot and bothered, why not go to secular Europe, which is declining alarmingly and is being subtly and not so subtly taken over by muslims. Remember, if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. Enjoy! Read Bruce Bawer's book, While Europe Slept.
In regard to Michael's report on the disastrous performance of Obama at the prayer breakfast, no surprise there. He is not Christian, he is most probably muslim and he is definitely not smart, not learned, not truthful, not grown up, not patriotic and not worthy of the office he holds. Half the voters really blew it this time. Or maybe only a third, and the rest was ACORN-induced. What a nightmare, and it will get a whole lot worse before it gets better.

did he ...
I just wonder if he started shucking and jiving and waving his arms in the air, or if he alternately, kept bowing toward mecca, or took off his shoes and curled up in his fetal position ...
Maybe he invited a few atheist communists so he wouldn't feel out of place.
I suspect he just HAD to spew out the word "alaah"...
Oh, did he sing you guys that islamic call to prayer thing he twanged off for the reporter who leaked it ?
Was Jeremiah Wright invited ? No ? Twenty years of spiritual mentoring, and the boy blunder fagged out on him ?

Unbelievable
I cannot believe this article nor the people defending it. The most brilliant minds of our species couldn't figure out God, his existence or what he meant and you think you can.You are at the cusp of arrogance if you think you know what God wants, which I believe is a sin.

We have very serious problems right now that we need to solve as a species, right now we are running out of planet to exploit, this could mean our extinction and that of many other species and you are here b**ching at who said what, when and were???
